Solar eclipse 2024: Follow the path of totality

Thinking of taking a last-minute drive to see the eclipse here's what to know.

RV traffic sits at a standstill along a two-lane road near Madras, Ore., a few days before the 2017 total solar eclipse. Experts say traffic could be heavy, but eclipse watchers shouldn't necessarily be deterred.

NASA says that roughly 31.6 million people live in the path of this year's total solar eclipse, and a little under half of the U.S. population lives within 200 miles driving distance of the path of totality .

That could mean many millions of Americans will hit the road to get a better view on April 8. If you're still pondering whether or not you want to make the journey, here's what to consider.

Have some destinations in mind, and check the weather and cloud cover forecasts in advance

It's a good idea to scout out one or more locations within driving distance, so that you have some flexibility if traffic or weather is threatening your plans, says Jonathan Upchurch, a professor emeritus of civil engineering at Arizona State University who has studied travel around solar eclipses.

There are several interactive tools that show the path of totality, including Eclipse2024.org and the National Solar Observatory . You can use them to figure out what sites might work best for you.

In terms of weather, check not just the weather forecast, but also the cloud cover forecast. Some websites, such as Windy.com will predict cloud cover ahead of time, giving you a sense of whether you'll actually be able to see the eclipse in all its glory.

Everything you need to know about solar eclipse glasses before April 8

Everything you need to know about solar eclipse glasses before April 8

During the total solar eclipse in 2017, Upchurch says he chose to go to Idaho "because there were some great chances of having sunny skies, and I had the opportunity to be nimble and relocate if I wanted to."

Before driving into the path of totality, make sure your gas tank is full and that you've got everything you need

During the last total solar eclipse in 2017, it's estimated some 5 million people took to the roads, and those numbers will potentially be much higher this year.

Given all that, Upchurch says it's important to make sure you're taking what you need into the path of totality. You should make sure your car is gassed or charged up, and that you have plenty of snacks and water with you in case you get stranded for a while, especially when trying to leave.

Also don't forget to bring eclipse glasses, which must be worn anytime you're looking at the sun, except for the few minutes when it is completely blocked by the moon.

Some state emergency planners also recommend bringing a paper map or road atlas in case cellular networks become overloaded with visitors seeking directions from their phones.

Don't forget your eclipse glasses everyone!

Arrive early and stay late

Once you figure out where you're going to watch the eclipse, and you've got your supplies, try to get there early. Although traffic is likely to be heavier than normal on the morning of eclipse day, it still should be possible to reach many destinations without too much hassle, says Upchurch.

"Leaving is definitely going to be more of a problem," he says. As the eclipse concludes, people will take to the roads all at once to try and get home as fast as they can. In 2017, that led to traffic jams that lasted many hours in some areas. If possible, Upchurch says, people should stay put for a while to try and avoid the worst of the post-eclipse rush, which in 2017 stretched even into the following day in some parts of the country.

Here's what time the eclipse will be visible in your region

And one more thing: If you do find yourself on the move near the time of the eclipse, state officials stress that you should not simply pull over to the side of the road or highway you're driving on. It's important to be parked legally and safely at the moment of totality.

If you're already in the path of totality: Relax and enjoy!

Several major metropolitan areas including Dallas, Indianapolis, Cleveland and Buffalo are already inside the path of totality, so there's no need to seek a better view, Upchurch says. You'll probably have the most fun simply staying where you are.

Watching a solar eclipse without the right filters can cause eye damage. Here's why

Watching a solar eclipse without the right filters can cause eye damage. here's why.

If you're on the edge of the path of totality, however, you might consider making a short trip to get closer to the center of the eclipse's path.

"If you're within about 40 miles of the center line, you'll have two-and-a-half minutes or more" of complete totality, Upchurch says. It's up to you to decide whether it's worth making the trip to a more central location.

Despite studying the potential hassles of traveling extensively, Upchurch says he's still looking forward to seeing the 2024 eclipse, which he plans to watch from Texas.

"Totality is absolutely spectacular," he says. "If you have a chance to witness it, I would do it."

Trump Media auditor warns that losses 'raise substantial doubt' about company's ability to continue

Donald Trump

An auditor has raised doubts about the ability of former President Donald Trump's publicly traded company to stay in business, according to a new regulatory filing .

Trump Media and Technology Group , which operates the Truth Social platform, reported it lost $58.2 million in 2023 while generating total revenues of $4.1 million, according to the Monday filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Trump Media listed its largest expense for the year as interest payments totaling more than $39 million.

The filing includes a note from an independent accounting firm, Colorado-based BF Borgers CPA PC, warning that Trump Media's "operating losses raise substantial doubt about its ability to continue as a going concern." In a separate filing Monday , Trump Media cited the auditor's analysis in describing the risks facing the business. Borgers has worked with Trump Media since 2022.

The note is dated March 25, the day before Trump's company started trading on the Nasdaq stock exchange under the symbol DJT, surging at first and earning comparisons to so-called meme stocks .

Shares of the company fell more than 21% to $48.66 on Monday. Its market value stood at more than $6.5 billion.

A spokesperson for Trump Media referred a request for comment to a Monday news release that quotes Trump Media CEO and former U.S. Rep. Devin Nunes.

“Closing out the 2023 financials related to the merger, Truth Social today has no debt and over $200 million in the bank, opening numerous possibilities for expanding and enhancing our platform," Nunes said in the release. "We intend to take full advantage of these opportunities to make Truth Social the quintessential free-speech platform for the American people.”

In the filing, the company acknowledged that it expects to operate at a loss for the "foreseeable future" as it works to expand Truth Social's user base and attract more advertisers. It said it would be "premature" to predict when it will attain profitability and positive cash flows from its operations.

As of the end of 2023, Trump Media had about $2.6 million in cash on hand and total liabilities of $70.1 million, according to the filing. The company received an infusion of about $300 million from its merger a week ago with shell company Digital World Acquisition Corp.

Trump Media went public last week and gave the former president a paper net worth of around $7 billion. However, Trump is barred from selling the shares he owns in the company for six months. Even before the latest losses were revealed, analysts said the value of the company would plummet if Trump were to sell his shares.

“If he goes ahead [with selling], it could sink DJT by at least 15% to 40% based on option pricing,” said Ben Emons, senior portfolio manager and head of fixed income at NewEdge Wealth, in a research note.

In a filing, the company cited Trump's candidacy for the presidency in warning that "he may divest his interest in Truth Social and may cease any involvement in its management."

Analysts also expect trading in the stock to be volatile while the legal and political fortunes of the former president shift as he seeks a new term in the White House. John Rekenthaler, vice president for research at Morningstar financial services group, likened the company's stock to a cryptocurrency .

"As with bitcoin, people buy Trump Media not for future cash flows but because: 1) they expect its price to rise, and 2) they feel an affiliation for the asset," Rekenthaler wrote. "Bitcoin owners are members of a club. So, too, are Trump Media investors, to an even greater degree. For them, DJT shares represent a currency by which they can express their beliefs and commitment."

U.S. approved more bombs to Israel on day of World Central Kitchen strikes

The biden administration signed off on thousands more bombs to israel despite global condemnation of the idf’s killing of seven world central kitchen employees.

i travel 200

The Biden administration approved the transfer of thousands more bombs to Israel on the same day Israeli airstrikes in Gaza killed seven aid workers for the charity group World Central Kitchen, three U.S. officials told The Washington Post this week after the incident elicited global condemnation.

The transaction demonstrates the administration’s determination to continue its flow of lethal weaponry to Israel despite Monday’s high-profile killings and growing calls for the United States to condition such support on greater protection for civilians in the war zone. A U.S. citizen was among the dead.

The move also casts new light on the emotional statement by President Biden that he was “outraged and heartbroken” by the tragedy and was insistent that such events never happen again.

“They were providing food to hungry civilians in the middle of a war,” Biden said. “They were brave and selfless.”

The White House declined to comment for this article.

The Israeli government confirmed it carried out Monday’s strike but called it “unintentional,” saying the military would conduct a “transparent” investigation and make the results public.

Israel-Gaza war

i travel 200

The State Department approved the transfer of more than 1,000 MK82 500-pound bombs, more than 1,000 small-diameter bombs, and fuses for MK80 bombs, all from authorizations granted by Congress several years before the latest hostilities between Israel and Hamas began, said the U.S. officials, who like others spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive arms deals.

A State Department spokesperson confirmed the approval and said it occurred sometime “prior” to when the Israeli aircraft struck the aid convoy.

The U.S. government has the authority to suspend an arms package anytime before delivery, which the spokesperson said probably would not occur until 2025 or later. It has not done so in this case.

When asked why the Biden administration did not at least pause the process after the incident or until the Israelis’ investigation was completed, the spokesperson did not provide comment.

Officials have not publicly disclosed what type of munition struck the aid truck, but the small-diameter bombs the United States has provided to Israel are “certainly comparable,” said Josh Paul, a former State Department arms expert who resigned in protest of the administration’s Gaza policy.

The Biden administration’s unyielding support for Israel’s military has been combined with public statements of concern about Israel’s conduct in the war. After a phone call between Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday, Secretary of State Antony Blinken suggested there would be consequences if Israel did not heed U.S. demands on protecting civilians and admitting more humanitarian aid.

“If we don’t see the changes we need to see, there will be changes in our policy,” Blinken said.

He declined to say if that would affect U.S. arms transfers specifically.

Biden, in his statement following the attack, offered pointed criticism of Israel’s treatment of humanitarian workers, who have died in greater numbers than in any other recent conflict .

“Israel has not done enough to protect aid workers trying to deliver desperately needed help to civilians. Incidents like yesterday’s simply should not happen,” Biden said.

Blinken said the slain workers , who included individuals from Australia, Britain, the Palestinian territories and Poland and a U.S.-Canadian dual national, were “heroes.”

“They have to be protected. We shouldn’t have a situation where people who are simply trying to help their fellow human beings are themselves at grave risk,” he said.

Some Democratic supporters of the Biden administration criticized such statements, saying they result in little change when U.S. actions convey unconditional support for Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.

“Until there are substantive consequences, this outrage does nothing,” Ben Rhodes, a former foreign policy adviser to President Barack Obama, said on X.

Netanyahu “obviously doesn’t care what the U.S. says, it’s about what the U.S. does,” Rhodes said.

Republicans in Congress have been broadly supportive of weapons transfers to Israel and have defended its tactics and methods in the six-month conflict. Former president Donald Trump , the presumptive GOP nominee in this year’s election, has said that Hamas’s killing rampage in southern Israel on Oct. 7 was “one of the saddest things I’ve ever seen” but that Israel needs to end the war soon.

“You have to finish it up, you got to get it done,” he told an Israeli newspaper last month.

World Central Kitchen on Thursday called for a third-party investigation into the attacks and urged the home countries of the killed workers to join the charity in calling for an independent review.

The strikes hit three of the group’s vehicles as they traveled in Gaza on a route that had been coordinated and cleared with the Israeli military, the charity group said. The workers were killed shortly after overseeing the unloading of 100 tons of food brought to the enclave by sea.

José Andrés, the celebrity chef who founded World Central Kitchen, has alleged that Israel targeted the aid workers “systematically, car by car.”

“This was not just a bad luck situation where ‘oops’ we dropped the bomb in the wrong place,” he told the Reuters news agency.

“This was over a 1.5, 1.8 kilometers, with a very defined humanitarian convoy that had signs in the top, in the roof, a very colorful logo that we are obviously very proud of,” he said. It’s “very clear who we are and what we do.”

Israel launched its military assault in Gaza after Hamas-led militants rampaged across the border on Oct. 7, killing 1,200 people and taking more than 250 hostage. Israel’s ensuing assault on Gaza has killed more than 33,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants and says the majority of the dead are women and children.

The Israeli siege has created a chronic shortage of food, water and medicine as the health system has collapsed and dozens of children have died of malnutrition and starvation, according to the United Nations.

The dire need has compelled humanitarian workers from around the world to help provide aid to the besieged enclave, but Monday’s killings are forcing aid groups to reassess the security environment.

U.N. relief agencies have paused night operations to make a security assessment, a spokesperson said Wednesday. At least two other aid groups have also said they would pause operations in Gaza because of safety concerns for their staff. About 200 aid workers have been killed during the war, most of them Palestinian, according to the United Nations.

The latest arms transfers represent small portions, valued in the millions of dollars, of much larger foreign military sales that were approved by Congress years ago but never fulfilled in their entirety. The use of older cases means the State Department is not required to provide a new notification to Congress, even though the geopolitical and humanitarian context has changed significantly since the sales were approved.

When asked Tuesday about the State Department’s role in continued arms transfers, Blinken cited regional threats to Israel from Iran and Hezbollah, saying the weapons “go to deterrence, trying to avoid more conflicts. They go to replenishment of their supplies and their stocks.”

But U.S. weapons are also being used in Gaza, which U.S. intelligence officials and a growing number of Democrats worry could pose a security threat to the United States from extremist groups seeking to retaliate against Washington’s policies.

“Every moment that this nightmarish humanitarian condition continues inside Gaza is a day that the United States is less safe, because we bear global responsibility side by side with Israel,” Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) told MSNBC on Wednesday.

“Until commitments can be made to open up more humanitarian access, the United States needs to stop sending military aid,” Murphy added. “It’s not only because we hope that it has some impact on decision-making inside Israel, but also because we think that actually helps insulate us from some of the blowback that is going to occur as terrorist recruitment grows.”

Israeli strikes that killed seven World Central Kitchen workers in Gaza were “carried out in serious violation” of the military’s procedures and were a “grave mistake stemming from a serious failure due to a mistaken identification” of vehicles as carrying Hamas operatives, according to the findings of an Israeli military investigation .

Israel-Gaza war: On Oct. 7, Hamas militants launched an unprecedented cross-border attack on Israel that included the taking of civilian hostages at a music festival . (See photos and videos of how the deadly assault unfolded ). Israel declared war on Hamas in response, launching a ground invasion that fueled the biggest displacement in the region since Israel’s creation in 1948 .

Gaza crisis: In Gaza, Israel has waged one of this century’s most destructive wars , killing tens of thousands and plunging at least half of the population into “ famine-like conditions. ” For months, Israel has resisted pressure from Western allies to allow more humanitarian aid into the enclave .

U.S. involvement: Despite the tensions between Netanyahu and some U.S. politicians , including Biden, the United States supports Israel with weapons , funds aid packages , and has vetoed or abstained from U.N. cease-fire resolutions.

Billie Eilish, Nicki Minaj, Jon Bon Jovi and over 200 artists call for protections against “predatory use of AI”

thumbnail

More than 200 music artists including stars like Nicki Minaj , Katy Perry , Billie Eilish , Stevie Wonder, J Balvin and Jon Bon Jovi have signed an open letter warning against the "predatory use of AI" in the music industry.

On Monday, the group of artists released the letter acknowledging AI's "enormous potential to advance human creativity" but also warning that powerful companies could use their original work to train artificial intelligence models and eventually replace human musicians altogether.

"We must protect against the predatory use of AI to steal professional artists' voices and likenesses, violate creators' rights, and destroy the music ecosystem," the letter states.

It further calls on tech companies, AI developers and digital music services to pledge that they won't develop or use AI-powered technology that undermines songwriters and artists or prevents them from earning fair compensation for their art.

Why artists are concerned about AI

While the letter certainly makes a statement, things get a bit complicated when it comes to getting companies to comply, says Michael Huppe, president and CEO of SoundExchange, a music tech organization that collects and distributes digital performance royalties. Huppe is also a music law professor at Georgetown University.

Streaming platforms and tech companies "can't turn a blind eye to these types of concerns from the creative community," he tells CNBC Make It. "But, unfortunately, if they feel they can do something without getting the proper licenses or without proper authorization, some of them will do it and some won't."

In a March 29 blog post , OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, revealed development of a new AI tool that is able to generate a realistic clone of someone's voice from a 15-second audio clip. The company noted the risks voice cloning technology presents and says the tool has not been released to the public at this time.

"We believe that any broad deployment of synthetic voice technology should be accompanied by voice authentication experiences that verify that the original speaker is knowingly adding their voice to the service and a no-go voice list that detects and prevents the creation of voices that are too similar to prominent figures," OpenAI said in the blog post.

When it comes to AI, copyright laws may not go far enough

Although U.S. federal copyright laws offer artists and music labels protections against blatant rip-offs of their work, it can be tough to apply those laws to AI-generated content that merely mimics an artist's voice or general sound but doesn't directly copy their lyrics or music.

Huppe says the laws currently on the books could use an update in order to keep up with AI technology's rapid development and prevent it from being used irresponsibly.

"An artist's sound is their brand," he says. "If you're using somebody's voice or their likeness without permission, it goes beyond copyright law because that's stealing their brand for commercial profit."

To that point, Tennessee, which is known as a major music and entertainment hub, recently became the first state to pass legislation that will protect musicians from AI voice cloning technology. The Ensuring Likeness Voice and Image Security (ELVIS) Act , which will go into effect July 1, expands the state's existing laws protecting artists' name, image and likeness from being misused to also include their voice.

AI's potential in the music industry

AI innovation doesn't spell completely bad news for the music industry, Huppe says. There's potential for collaboration if AI tech is used responsibly.

One way to do that is to gain artists' consent to use their voice in AI-generated music, compensate them appropriately and give them proper credit, he says.

"As long as you have consent, credit and compensation, many artists and creators would likely happily collaborate with AI," he says. "There's a way to make this work."

How I built my $400 million-a-year dating app Hinge

I spent $1,200 on tickets to see Olivia Rodrigo with my daughter. It was worth every penny.

  • I wasn't able to get tickets for Olivia Rodrigo 's Guts World Tour at first.
  • I didn't want my daughter to miss out on the show, so I bought resale tickets for $1,200.
  • We had a great time together and seeing my daughter's joy made the cost worth it.

Insider Today

When Olivia Rodrigo announced her Guts World Tour in support of her sophomore album, my body tensed.

"Here we go again," I thought. My daughter, 13, loves Rodrigo almost as much as she loves Taylor Swift.

Having tried, and failed, to get tickets through Ticketmaster for Swift's Eras Tour , I swore to do better.

Ultimately, I failed and ended up shelling out over $1,000 for two tickets to the tour. But I don't have any regrets.

I was determined to bring my daughter to the Guts World Tour

When Rodrigo announced the Guts World Tour , I did everything I could to prepare.

I recruited relatives to sign up their email for the Ticketmaster presale lottery so we'd have more chances to buy tickets. I even opened a credit card in hopes of getting access to the American Express presale.

When Rodrigo announced she was releasing $20 tickets in select cities, we once again rallied the troops to sign up for a chance to buy them.

We tried to get tickets to the show in our city, Washington, DC, and anywhere within reasonable driving distance, too.

We walked away defeated. Eventually, I realized Rodrigo would be performing in St. Paul, Minnesota, during our family trip there in March.

But resale prices were high — two tickets with an unobstructed view were going to cost over $1,000. I put off making a decision.

The night of Rodrigo's first show, my daughter wondered aloud which songs would be on the setlist and what types of outfits the singer might wear.

My heart grew watching her excitement, and it quickly sank thinking she might miss out on seeing Rodrigio live. I worried ticket prices would climb even higher with the tour starting.

I panicked. Before Rodrigo's set ended, I'd purchased two tickets in the 110 section from resale marketplace TickPick for a whopping $1,200 after fees.

I felt incredibly fortunate that I could do this for my daughter, but still wondered if these tickets were a good use of money.

"It's a bad idea, right?" I told my daughter, quoting one of Rodrigo's songs. She assured me it was the best idea ever.

We had an amazing time, and I don't regret a thing

Once I had tickets, my daughter and I went all in, recapturing some of the magic we had preparing for Swift's Eras Tour .

My daughter carefully chose her outfit, working in several references to Rodrigo's songs, with ribbons in her hair and a homemade shirt. She even made me a matching one, even though we hadn't had matching outfits since she was a toddler.

She made me a friendship bracelet in Rodrigo's signature color, purple. I haven't taken it off yet.

When the concert started, my daughter was beside herself with joy.

As Rodrigo started her performance, my daughter's phone was fixed on the stage, but I was fixated on her. There's nothing better than watching one of my children experience happiness the way she did hearing Rodrigo sing live for the first time.

My daughter sang along to every single song. And, really, the show was incredible.

It was hard to look away as Rodrigo floated above the audience on a moon surrounded by stars. The 21-year-old singer acted like the rock star she is while also pausing to wave to fans.

I'm looking forward to going to more concerts with my daughter, but hopefully at more reasonable prices.

I have post-traumatic stress arthritis in my left ankle, which causes the ankle to randomly swell. These shoes are the first and only shoe that I have found that sits below the ankle and when my ankle swells, the hinge that opens the shoe to slide your foot in also allows for the shoe to open at the ankle releasing the pressure of swelling that normal shoes do not. I am so happy I found these. Really wish the Nike box stores carried them. ...

Good but need better inventory

I really like these shoes but I had to wait a long time for them to restock in my size. Very good but need a better inventory. That is my biggest complaint. I would be giving 5 stars if it was easier to find/get in my size. But overall, a very nice shoe and would definitely recommend ...

Great product but didn't work in my case

Evy399796907 - Mar 01, 2024

I got this with high hopes that my post stroke father would be able to use it and simplify the shoe process for me as a caretaker as well. The shoe itself was very well designed, putting it on myself was simple. That being said it didn't work so well for my dad. The top fabric of the shoe is VERY soft, and that means it kind of folds/gets caught on your foot. If you can wiggle a bit and maneuver the shoe on it's perfect but if you are like my dad and have a paralyzed foot it isn't ideal. Still a wonderful product and I wish it just had a more structured top ...
