India Tours & Vacations

Travellers looking at a shrine carving with their guide in Delhi, India

There’s probably no other country on the planet that blazes its way into your memory like India.

Years later, you can still hear the morning calls of the chai wallahs; see smoke curling over the Ganges during a golden Varanasi sunrise , and smell the rich aromas of simmering curry. A lot of India tours rush from highlight to highlight, ticking them off in a blur of temples and tikka. But not us. Our India holidays are more about spotting Bengal tigers in Ranthambhore or Panna National Park, hanging with nomads in Jaisalmer, meeting the holy men of Pushkar, or hunting down the best street eats. This isn’t just the India you see on postcards. This is India as it is. Raw, bizarre and totally addictive.

Best time to visit india.

Due to India's size and topography, the climate varies from place to place but the best time to visit, generally speaking, is in the winter from December until early March. During the coolest months (December-January), temperatures can get quite cold in Delhi and in the north, especially at night. The whole country tends to get very hot from April onwards and most regions experience the summer from late May to around October. The summer offers hot and humid conditions, although this is considered one of the best times to visit Ladakh and the hills.

Culture and customs

India is one of the world’s oldest civilizations with a culture steeped in ancient beliefs and traditions. Religion also plays a massive role in everyday life with 80% of the population practicing Hinduism while the remaining 20% is divided into Muslim (India has the world’s second-largest Muslim population), Christian, Sikhism and Buddhist populations.

At its core, India remains a deeply conservative nation; however, it has been touched by rapid modernization and Western influences in recent years. Some families still adhere to a traditional structure (especially in more rural areas) with generations living under the same roof, the eldest male at the head of the family and arranged marriages. But this is becoming less and less popular, particularly in larger cities, where Western ideas and societal shifts heavily influence the culture due to things like Bollywood films.

While some behavioral standards remain the same (public displays of affection are still taboo), it’s important to keep in mind that with more than one billion people speaking over 122 languages across 28 states and seven territories, it’s impossible to describe one unified culture for the entire nations and the character of India’s people can vary greatly from city to city.

Geography and environment

India shares land borders with   Bangladesh ,   China , Pakistan,   Nepal ,   Myanmar   and   Bhutan , and also has wide stretches of coastline along the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean. As the seventh largest country in the world, India is home to a variety of terrains - the Himalayas of the north, the deserts and plains of the west, the fertile waterways of the south and the hills and forests of the east. Development is occurring at a rapid pace, with India's large, sprawling cities consisting of everything from five star hotels to shanty towns, and with modern malls and cinemas sitting comfortably alongside bazaars and street food vendors. A trip through India will reveal a diverse range of landscapes, villages, cities and environments.

History and government

Early history.

Humans have inhabited India for as long as 75,000 years, with early civilizations flourishing as early as 3300 BC. Over the centuries, India both influenced and was influenced by other nations and kingdoms, with far-reaching trade, conquest and migration spreading the subcontinent's culture far and wide. Empires rose and fell over the centuries, with the wealthy Mughal Dynasty ruling most of India by 1600. At the same time, different European nations started showing an interest in India after being brought to the area for trade. The Portuguese, Dutch, British and French all had vested interests in India, with the British East India Company being given the rights to trade in India in 1617. The 1857 rebellion and War of Independence culminated in the decline of Mughal rule and were considered the first movements against the British Raj's heavy-handed rule of the country.

Recent history

By the 1920s, India's independence movement had grown considerably with Mohandas Gandhi leading mass movements based on passive resistance and non-cooperation against the British Raj. Although it took decades, India finally gained independence in 1947. More recently, India has seen dramatic societal changes mainly due to modernization and globalization. A new wave of prosperity has seen the rise of the middle class, with men and women entering into new work roles in telecommunications, manufacturing and business. India's large cities are dealing with the mass migration of rural citizens, who are moving to the city to seek better employment, education and opportunities for their children.

Festivals and events in India

Many of India’s biggest festivals are religious and follow either the Indian lunar calendar or the Islamic calendar. The dates may change each year, but the fervor of celebration never does. Some of the best and biggest festivals to keep an eye out for in India are:

Holi (Festival of Colour)

Take a whole lot of colored powder and water, add thousands of happy people not afraid to get a little (or a lot) dirty and you have Holi – a technicolor Hindu celebration that marks the beginning of spring and the triumph of good over evil. Celebrations take place across India in either February or March.

Diwali (Festival of Lights)

India’s biggest festival – meaning ‘rows of lighted lamps’, people decorate their homes with colorful lights, candles are lit and firework displays take place across the country. The celebrations are particularly spectacular in Varanasi, where illuminated candles and earthen lamps are floated down the Ganges River as fireworks light up the sky. This five-day festival takes place every October or November.

Gujarat Kite Festival

Large, colorful and unusual kites flood the skies of Gujarat each January to commemorate the start of summer and the beginning of harvest. Purchase your own at Patang Bazaar, a famous kite market, or just watch the others dance through the sky.

Mumbai Ganesh Festival

The birth of the elephant-headed god, Ganesh, is celebrated for 10-days each August or September in cities across India, but Mumbai takes it to another level. An incredible energy can be felt throughout the city as people pack the streets for a massive party and an elaborate statue of Ganesh is paraded around.

Pushkar Camel Fair

Thousands of camels (and their owners dressed in their finest garb) descend upon Rajasthan's Pushkar for the annual camel fair. Camels are traded and raced, acrobats and performers entertain crowds at a nearby fair, while finely dressed males and bejeweled females take the chance to let their hair down.

What is the internet access like in India?

Internet access is generally very good in India, with most cafes, restaurants and accommodations offering free wi-fi, even in the more rural areas. There is also good phone coverage for data use if you choose to purchase a local SIM card to stay connected for the duration of your India tour.

There are quite a number of carriers that are all very competitive, but Airtel is probably the best option for travelers. You’ll need to a copy of your passport and visa to pick up a SIM, and the process can sometimes be a hassle, but rates in India are very affordable given the competition.

Yes, you’ll be able to use your cell phone while on an India tour, but only if you have activated global roaming or purchased a local SIM card.

The same advice is also given to heterosexual couples (and couples of all other sexual orientations) as public displays of affection other than hugging and holding hands are generally frowned upon.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

Cruising the waterways of India is a revealing, inspiring experience. Whether it’s the iconic Ganges or peaceful Kerala backwaters, seeing India from the water is a must.

Traveling by train is one of the great experiences of India. It's a system which looks like chaos, but it works - and well.

Use the efficient metro to get around the sights and suburbs of Delhi.

Zip around the big cities of India by auto rickshaw.

What kind of accommodation will I be staying in?

Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodation as unique and traditional as possible.

When traveling with us in India you may find yourself staying in a homestay.

Make new friends, feast on authentic home cooking and receive kind hospitality while staying with friendly families in India.

With walks, wildlife spotting and adventure sports nearby, staying in a jungle resort is the perfect way to see another side of India.

From ex-royal palaces to historic hill stations and converted forts, India is full of heritage properties that have been turned into comfortable accommodation with an old-world touch.

What is it like traveling on a small group tour?

Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or you’re about to embark on your first trip, traveling can be as intimidating as it is exciting. That's the beauty of a small group tour. From handling the logistics and organizing amazing cultural activities to local leaders who know each destination like the back of their hand (like which street has the best markets and where to get the most authentic food), traveling on a small group tour with Intrepid will give you unforgettable travel experiences without the hassle that comes with exploring a new place. Plus, you'll have ready-made friends to share the journey with. All you have to do is turn up with a healthy sense of adventure and we’ll take care of the rest.

Golden Triangle Tour

Golden Triangle

Travel in India isn't everyone's cup of tea but India must be seen. Our fuide was absolutely superior. He loves his country and is most knowledgeable. Transportation was good. Meals were "safe" and tasty. When they say don't drink the water, they mean it. Use bottled water and bring face masks. That"s India. The hotels were nothing to write home about. I can't think of a single one that didn't need better cleaning.

Uncover India: High Deserts & Markets

An absolutely amazing 2 weeks of incredible sights, scenery and food! Each day was packed full of activities and exciting things to see, and there were lots of optional extras organised by our guide to fill the free time. You get a real feel for the culture - this is not just a tour from one monument to the next, but a dive under the skin of India to experience the real culture and see all sides of the amazing country. We owe a huge thank you to our CEO Dushyant, who was the most amazing guide and helped us to get the most out of our tour. A few things to note - have some money available for the optional extra activities, upgrades on transport (eg we got trains instead of buses to save time) and tipping. Would recommend taking a sleeping bag liner for the night train as the bedding did not look clean. Lots of early mornings so be prepared for that!

India's Bestseller - 5 Day Golden Triangle - Delhi, Agra & Jaipur (Guaranteed Departure)

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip around the Golden Triangle. Our driver Ajay Soni was incredible, nothing was too much for him. His knowledge of the areas we were traveling through was very impressive. His best characteristic was his extreme patience with everything that was going on around him. We were also super impressed by our Jaipur Guide Krishan his calmness and his gentle demeanor was so well expressed that we felt totally comfortable in his presence. I would definitely recommend that you ask for them both when you come to visit this amazing country. Thank you Tourradar for an overall amazing experience.

Dealing with Tour Radar has been extremely positive from beginning to end. Websites are easy to navigate, questions are answered promptly, payments are processed precisely when I was told they would be (with a reminder that the were happening) and most importantly the people that they use to guide and care for us on the local level are some of the best we have encountered in our travels. Even after our tour ended the local company continued to help and advise us when our plans suddenly changed due to a flight cancellation. Based upon our experience in India I would have no hesitation about recommending them or using them again in the future! B. MacCarl Canada

Golden Triangle Tour With Ranthambore Tour

Golden Triangle Tour With Ranthambore

All in all, an insanely amazing trip. First and foremost, a big shoutout to our driver who was always polite and attentive, demonstrating a very high level of driving skills in this crazy traffic. We felt safe throughout. The organization was also very good. Both the hotels and guides were very friendly, and everything was straightforward. We were among the lucky ones who had the chance to see three tigers, but we also knew not to be disappointed if it didn't happen as it's quite rare. The only criticism concerns the restaurants where you are "dumped" for lunch during long car rides, for example from Delhi to Jaipur. These places, in terms of cleanliness and food quality, border on outrageousness, and you feel ripped off.

Taj Majal At Sunrise In Agra, India

Indian rupee

Capital City

Hindi, English

Good morning

Shubh prabhaat

Good evening

"I'll show you how to navigate the buzzing cities of India, and go beyond to find soul-stirring temples, beautiful mountains and irresistible food."

Travel Director

Navigate the busy streets of Old Delhi on a rickshaw ride

The nation's capital rings to the sounds of car horns, chai stalls and the chatter of its 29 million inhabitants. Shuffle into an open-air rickshaw and ride through the streets of the Old Delhi, admiring traditional Havelis and stopping for a famous mango or pomegranate frozen kulfi to cool off in the summer.

Gaze at the sun-kissed Taj Mahal in Agra

Take a journey to Agra and be stirred by the ultimate symbol of fairy-tale architecture. Inlaid with precious gemstones, this ivory marble palace was originally commissioned by an emperor as a tomb for his wife, standing as a symbol of love and opulence since 1653.

Spot tigers in Ranthambore National Park

Clamber into the back of an open-top safari car and spot leopards, marsh crocodiles, hyenas and Bengal tigers wandering their natural habitat. Sprawling over almost 300km 2 , the Ranthambore National Park is also home to a 10th-century fort, giant banyan trees and many lakes.

Experience royal Rajasthan

Enthralling cities interrupt the inhospitable desert in Rajasthan, India's largest state. Home to around 30 royal palaces including the floating lake palace of Udaipur and the iconic peach palace of Hawa Mahal, you will be swept up by the regal heritage found in this part of India.

Visit one of the Bollywood studios in Mumbai

Take a journey into the metropolis of Mumbai to uncover the prestigious culture of the Indian film industry. Without knowing a word of Hindi or a single Bollywood film, you will be captivated by this passionate industry. Be guided past the homes of megastars and catch a glimpse behind the scenes as the cameras roll.

Our top 5 things to do in India

Let Trafalgar guide your India vacation through a majestic tapestry of landmarks and experience. From the Taj Mahal to the tiger parks of Rajasthan, these are just some of the soul-stirring moments waiting when you travel with us.

National Museum

India vacation tours get under the skin of the country's culture with a trip to the National Museum of New Delhi. Roam the halls and take in elaborate jewellery, ancient manuscripts and traditional miniature paintings on cloth. From the prehistoric to the modern, this expansive Indian museum is a must-visit.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya

The King Shivaji museum, or CSMVS, is a pride of Mumbai showcasing around 50,000 exhibitions within an impressive Indo-gothic building. After taking in archaeology, art and natural history, spend time in the tranquil, flower-filled gardens that contrast the bustle of Mumbai.

City Palace

Taking almost 400 years to be built, the City Palace of Udaipur is an architectural masterpiece beside Lake Pichola. Enter the museum section of the palace complex via the royal courtyard, allowing plenty of time to immerse in the artefacts of India's distant past.

Best museums in India

Step off the streets and find a moment of quiet in a spellbinding museum. Here are just a few of the places we will visit in India to peel back the many layers of culture.

A thin fried bread mentioned in 12th-century Sanskrit scriptures, paratha is part of India's cultural heritage. Try it stuffed with spinach, fenugreek and the cheese of paneer, or take it on its own for lapping up the leftover gravy from a delectable curry.

Varan Bhaat Diva

Popular along the sunny coastline of Goa, Varan Bhaat Diva is Indian comfort food of peas, beans, rice and many spices. Often given to those who are exhausted or sick, you will feel soothed by the warmth and turmeric in this family favorite.

Chicken cafreal

Inspired by the dishes brought from Portugal during colonial times, the herb coated chicken legs of cafreal will cement your infatuation with Indian cuisine. Shallow fried and often served with potato and wedges of citrus fruit, India tour packages aren't complete until cafreal is served.

Best food in India

Despite the many famous dishes that have journeyed far from the lands of India, this country still has culinary delights that will rouse your tastebuds. From warm bread to fragrant curries, we'll guide you through the secrets of this spicy land.

What to pack for India

People packing for a tour

A few good books

The Indian rail network chuffs for 65,000 kilometres around India. A geographically large company with relatively slow transport systems, a few books can keep you entertained between admiring scenery.

Light and modest clothing

Though India does get cooler than most expect, many parts of the year are intensely hot. Pack sheer, light clothing that covers you right to the ankles, wrists and neck so that you can respectfully visit religious sites without sweltering.

Medication for stomach upsets

Though our India group tours will see you largely protected from unsanitary food or water, it is still handy to keep a supply of medication on hand. Charcoal tablets can be taken daily as a preventive measure to ensure any nasties are quickly expelled from your system.

Water purification devices

The purification of water has come a long way in recent years. Make your way to a specialist travel shop to discuss bottles, gadgets and tablets that will ensure you stay hydrated without falling ill.

Wet wipes and hand sanitiser

True to its reputation, India can be a hot and messy place. Pack wet wipes and hand sanitiser to ensure you feel fresh when you're on the go.

Golden Triangle tour

As India tours go, visiting India's Golden Triangle offers a great introduction to the country, which covers a route between Delhi, Agra and Jaipur.

From Delhi, most travellers make their way to the Taj Mahal — one of the most romantic places in the world for very good reason.

For more details on one of the most classic India tours, read our guide on planning an India’s Golden Triangle tour .

North India tours

Being wowed by Old and New Delhi, and Amritsar’s Golden Temple. Exploring the cool Himalayan Foothills. Discovering Dharamsala, home of the Dalai Lama. All this — and much more — awaits if you opt for a North India tour.

Want to see a stack of northern India highlights in a single trip? Check out our customisable North India tours .

South India tours

Every bit as exhilarating as touring North India, taking a tour of South India will almost certainly involve spending time in Chennai . The country’s fourth-largest city boasts everything from marvellous Raj architecture to pilgrimage sites.

The Tamil Nadu region is a must-visit during South India tours. Don’t miss Mamallapuram — a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its ancient monuments carved from stone.

Other highlights of the south include Munnar’s plantations, Odisha’s temples, the ancient towns of Madurai and Thanjavur, and the southern jewel of Kerala (more on that later).

Taj Mahal (Agra)

Agra , India’s capital under the Mughals, is utterly breathtaking. With a monumental fort, Agra is most famed for the magnificent Taj Mahal. Read our tips for visiting the Taj Mahal to make the most of your visit.

Along with Agra and Delhi, Jaipur is long-established on India tours of the Golden Triangle. Abundant in flamboyant Rajasthani architecture, with an old walled quarter at its heart, visiting Jaipur is an unforgettable experience.

Split between the forested mountains of the  Western Ghats and a lush coastal plain of lagoons and canals, the state of Kerala is also known for historic forts, temples and beautiful Kerala beaches .

A massive modern metropolis that’s home to seventeen million people, Delhi is also home to rich historic attractions — tombs and temples that date back centuries, and the Red Fort.

Due to the marvellous Goa beaches and its excellent party scene, this part of India remains a popular tour destination for Europeans. Undiscovered it ain’t, but there are still secret gems in Goa to explore, stacks of cultural sites, and opportunities to walk on the wilder side,

Delhi's Lotus Temple or the Bahai House of worship

A trip to India is a bombardment on your senses. The country introduces you to all kinds of sights, sounds and smells and it can be a bit difficult to take in everything the very first day. The only way to explore India is to be patient and give it some time. You feel the glaring lack of privacy, but you also come to fall in love with the fascinating beauty all around you. From a rich culture that dates back centuries to ancient archeological ruins that still stand in all their glory, from glittering temples to elaborate forts and palaces, India is a dream you never wish to wake up from.

The country has a long and colorful religious history and is famous for its celebrations and festivals. Irrespective of which time you choose to visit, you always have a festival to become a part of. And it is not just about exploring temples and worshiping deities. You can also rediscover yourself at one of those yoga ashrams scattered all over the country. People have been visiting India for decades and still find themselves falling in love with its culture, architectural riches and arts that easily rival the best of Italian renaissance.

Tour Highlights

  • Stare in awe at the majestic Taj Mahal
  • Explore the intricate artwork and ancient culture hidden in the Ajanta Caves
  • Take part in the colourful Holi festival in Vrindavan

Travel Tips

  • Even if you’re a seasoned traveller, get ready for a culture shock. Heavily populated India is incredibly busy in terms of crowds, sights and sounds. Take it slow and be open minded on your India tour.
  • Learn about common scams before setting off on your India holiday. A quick internet search will tell you the most frequent scams and how best to avoid them on your travels.
  • Perhaps surprisingly for one of the world’s tech capitals, fast internet can be hard to find in India, particularly outside the country's largest cities. Consider buying a local sim card so you’re always connected.
  • Have no worries about learning Hindi, English is widely spoken in India. You’ll also see it on most road signs, so navigation is relatively easy.
  • Women, in particular, should opt for loose-fitting clothing. Tight or revealing outfits may generate unwanted male attention. However, no matter what you wear, Western travellers should be prepared for unwanted attention.

India vacations 2024 & 2025

A country by name, but a continent in scale, India in one word is diversity. To guide you where to go when faced with such rich variety, our India specialists use the experience of their own travels to create your tailor-made vacation to India.

The north is banded by the snow-crowned peaks of the Himalaya. Moving south, you pass through Rajasthan, a microcosm of India with its forts, palaces and temples, as well as the Taj Mahal . Central India shelters leopards, elephants and the Bengal tiger. In India’s northeast corner, Calcutta still exudes its colonial heritage in a landscape of Bengali mansions and neo-Gothic architecture. West-coast Mumbai is an improbable proposition — a hub of manufacturing where you can wander among Art Deco architecture or through a teeming bazaar. Down in India’s south, cruising Kerala’s  backwaters on a converted rice barge is a suitably relaxed way to embrace this region’s laid-back approach to life.

Useful information for planning your vacation in India

The official language is Hindi which is spoken by about 30% of the population, but English is often used for official or commercial purposes. Additionally, there are more than 100 other regional languages and dialects, including Punjabi, Bengali, Gujarati, and Oriya, which are widely used in the north, and Tamil and Telugu, which are common in the south. Other regional languages are Marathi, Kannada, and Malayalam. The northern Muslim population largely speak Urdu.

India’s currency is the rupee (Rs). You can’t buy rupees outside of India — tell our representative at the airport and they’ll direct you to an ATM.

Tipping for good service is expected in India and your specialist will provide more details. In some homestays and hotels, particularly in Kerala, you’ll find a communal tip box, usually in reception. Please give your tip to your host to distribute fairly if a tip box isn’t provided.

Like its cultures and languages, India’s cuisines are highly regional and what you eat and drink will vary depending on where you visit. However, there are a few things you’ll find no matter where you go. For instance, thali are traditional meals made of different curries and dal with traditional accompaniments — all served in small bowls and arranged artistically on a large tray. The exact contents vary by region.

You’ll also find an abundance of street foods everywhere from big cities to rural roads with nothing else around, which you can explore on a guided tour. Another common sight — chaiwallahs selling spiced milk tea on seemingly every corner. For a more in-depth look at India’s long history with tea, consider a visit to one of the country’s many tea plantations .

For a more hands-on approach, we can arrange private cooking classes with families across the country, from Delhi  to Tellicherry .

For the latest travel advice for India, including entry requirements, health information, and the safety and security situation , please refer to the State Department website .

What you experience in India depends on where you go in this vast and varied country, but the most popular sight is the Taj Mahal. Located in the Golden Triangle, Agra’s renowned mausoleum is an ethereal sight during a sunrise visit . Nearby, you can also track tigers in Ranthambhore National Park  or meet artisans in the markets of Jaipur . In the southwest, you might relax on a rice barge-turned-houseboat through the backwaters of Kerala .

Wherever you go, we can arrange cooking lessons to help you explore the many facets of India’s regional dishes, like Rajasthani cuisine in Jodhpur  or Mopillah cuisine  in Tamil Nadu. To get to know individual ingredients better, you might tour a tea plantation .

For your first visit to India, we suggest visiting Delhi, Jaipur, and Agra, home of the Taj Mahal. Known collectively as the Golden Triangle , these three ancient cities are treasure troves of Mughal culture, including forts, palaces, and bazaars. You can also include a visit to nearby Ranthambhore National Park , to look for elusive tigers. Your specialist will help you find the region’s many hidden corners to give you a different perspective on the area. For example, you might opt to stay in rural villages  instead of the big cities.

On a second visit, you might explore Tamil Nadu, where brightly painted temples stretch to the sky. Here, you can visit the 49 shines of Ranganathaswamy Temple in Trichy, take a cooking class in Pondicherry , and then end your trip  on the backwaters of Kerala. Or you could explore Bengal culture and cuisine, starting in Calcutta . From there, take a lazy cruise through Assam  on the mighty Brahmaputra, paired with a rhino safari in Kaziranga National Park .

Our specialists will build your trip to suit your personal tastes, but you can get inspired by browsing our example itineraries .

From sumptuous palaces to humble homestays, where you stay in India depends on where you’re visiting and your personal style. The big cities offer a wide array of options including thoroughly modern five-star hotels and boutique guesthouses in well-preserved Victorian-era buildings. Outside the cities, you might opt for a stilted bungalow on a tea plantation, a remote lodge, or a safari camp in the heart of the jungle.

If you’re visiting the Golden Triangle, you can also choose to stay in a converted fort , a regal palace , or a historic family mansion known as a haveli. And further south, in Kerala, you can dive deeply into rural life with a homestay , known as theravads, or a rice barge-cum-houseboat that glides along the sleepy backwaters. Your specialist will suggest the best stays for you, but you can get an idea of the options available on our accommodation page .

The best places to see tigers in India are the Kanha, Satpura, Pench, and Tadoba national parks. Scattered across the central states of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Chhattisgarh, they’re home to the country’s greatest concentration of Bengal tigers. You’re also likely to see India’s other wildlife , like sloth bears, leopards, deer, and elephants, who all roam freely through the protected jungles.

However, if you’re visiting Rajasthan and don’t want to venture so far afield, you can also include time in nearby Ranthambhore National Park .

You should bring clothing that covers your head, knees, and shoulders if you plan on visiting holy places in India.

A direct flight from New York to Delhi takes about 14 hours, depending on airline.

The time zone in India is UTC +5:30.

The best way to get around in India is a combination of private driver and internal flights for longer trips. The traffic in India is dense and hectic, so we’ll arrange a private car and driver for all your trips while you’re in the country. Some of the drives might be long, but the car will be air conditioned, and your driver can suggest stops to break up the journeys.

On days when you don’t have any planned experiences, we suggest you call our partners to have a private car rather than take a taxi.

If you’re interested in taking one of India’s trains, we can arrange for your ticket. Our representative will meet you at your hotel and escort you to your seat inside the train, cutting through the complexities at the station. As you disembark, you’ll find another representative waiting on the platform.

Yes, US visitors need a Tourist Visa to enter India. Additionally, your passport must be valid for at least six months from your date of arrival into India and have two completely blank pages.

Most US passport holders can apply online for either a long-term 1-year or 5-year E-Tourist Visa or you can opt to apply for the short-term 30-day E-Tourist Visa. We suggest sending postal visa applications to your chosen visa agency four to six weeks prior to departure.

If you’re visiting West Bengal, Sikkim, or Assam, you might be required to submit a passport photo or photocopy of your passport at each hotel — we suggest you arrange these documents before you arrive. In Sikkim, please bring spare passport photos with you for your Sikkim permit, which you’ll obtain at the state border.

If you’re not a US passport holder, you can check the visa requirements here .

Your doctor can provide you with vaccine advice for India, but you should also ensure you’re up to date with the recommended vaccinations for your home country. You can also check the suggested vaccinations on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website .

Interior arches of the Audience Hall at the City Palace in Jaipur, India

India is a large country with different climates impacting different regions, but generally the best time to visit India is between November and March.

From November to January, southern India experiences pleasant weather after the monsoon season. There are also fewer crowds on either side of the holiday season. In contrast, northern India is best to travel to from January to March as the conditions are dry and cool. Should you wish to travel in summer, consider March to May when temperatures rise but rains have yet to arrive.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).

Perhaps the best travel company I have ever worked with

Fabulous planning with every detailed anticipated. Extraordinary hotels and experiences. Top notch guide and drivers. We did not have to lift a finger. Just over the top in every respect. We are returning next year with Indian Excursions Co.

Tigers, Jungle cats and Elephants, could not have been better

Unlike other Tour Operators, Madeline started with what interested us with our travel (activities, accomodation and timing) and what didn’t we like and budget. She then designed an itinerary that included a few special extra things (private balcony dinner at Agra, Dining in an elephant sanctuary and staying in a Palace) that was perfect. When we landed to the time we flew out, Shiv was on hand ensuring our arrival, travel and activities ran faultlessly. I have a food allergy that all of our accomodation and restaurant booking had been made aware of and accommodated. Ranthambhore National park (tigers and the incredibly rare Jungle cats) and the our walk and dinner with Elephants at Dera Amer in Jaipur were our highlights as was the privilege of staying at Rajmahal Palace RAAS Jaipur. Last minute requests were arranged as were restaurant bookings. Special thank you to our wonderful guides (our guide in Agra was exceptionally knowledgeable and even travelled 2hours on a bus to arrange a surprise tour of Fatehpur Sikri on a travel day. Lastly our driver Manu made our trip relaxing and stress free. How he navigated traffic, always had a smile, advice and kept in a running commentary when we didn’t have a guide with us was remarkable. Definitely a holiday we loved and the only tour company to use while travelling to Rajasthan.

Full customised exciting travel

I organized my trip with Indian Excursion according to my wishes and expectations. My request has been well understood and the result was according to my expectations. Preparation of the trip as well as execution was perfect. During all trip, IE took care about me and there was no trouble. Hotels, visits and activities were according or even better as expected. Thank you Indian Excursions for this wonderful experience

Why we would do this again

We appreciated that this trip was planned for us after speaking with us about what we really wanted to do. We know that we did things that we wouldn't have thought of doing, block printing workshop for instance. Having both spent more time than is good for you in fancy hotels, we loved the smaller hotels Maddie and Shiv found for us. We had the same driver for our whole trip, and he was fabulous. PS we saw tigers, too.

Choosing Indian Excursions was the best decision we made!

We recently had the pleasure of embarking on an extraordinary journey through India with Indian Excursions, and I cannot recommend them enough. From start to finish, every aspect of our trip exceeded all expectations, leaving us with memories that will last a lifetime. From the moment we began planning our trip, Madeleine demonstrated unparalleled attention to detail, ensuring that every aspect of our journey was expertly taken care of. Her prompt and thorough responses to our inquiries instilled complete confidence in her ability to orchestrate a seamless travel experience. Throughout our time in India, Kundan, our dedicated driver, went above and beyond to ensure our comfort and satisfaction. His unwavering support and exceptional service truly enhanced our journey, leaving us feeling cared for and valued as guests. A highlight of our trip was the meticulous planning that went into celebrating my aunt's birthday. From the countless birthday surprises at each hotel to the enchanting balcony dinner in Agra, Indian Excursions left no stone unturned in making her milestone truly unforgettable. I must also commend the knowledgeable and passionate guides we had in each city. Their fluency in English and deep understanding of the local culture and history enriched our experience, allowing us to immerse ourselves fully in each destination. This trip was impeccably organized, and I would wholeheartedly recommended Indian Excursions. Their commitment to excellence and personalized service sets them apart, making them the top choice for anyone seeking a truly unforgettable travel experience. In conclusion, choosing Indian Excursions was the best decision we made. Their attention to detail, exceptional service, and thoughtful touches made our journey through India truly extraordinary. Thank you for creating memories that will last a lifetime. We travel a lot and have never experienced service quite like this!

Cannot praise them enough - a brilliant experience

We booked a group tour with Indian Excursions in February 2024. The care we received and the attention to detail was second to none. Knowledgeable and efficient, they are a top team. The tour ran smoothly, the accommodation was of an excellent standard and the guide and driver were first class. Madeleine worked with us tirelessly to provide a fully immersive experience for us and our group. The organisational skills are superb. She was on hand, together with Shiv while we were away in India and nothing was too much trouble. When one of our group contracted Covid they helped us manage the situation. When three people had their return flights cancelled they respond to a desperate phone call in the middle of the night as the airline in question had been unable to provide a hotel room. They went above and beyond what we would have expected and I would have no hesitation in recommending their services.

Explore India only moms and kids

We, three moms traveled with six kids between age 10 to 15 and most of the kids were visiting India for first time. So, we wanted them to enjoy the journey and have real cultural experience. We also wanted to have flexibility to change the planned day activities. Madeleine planned everything according to our needs. The guide Devi Singh Rathode is most knowledgeable and kind person. We were meeting him and the driver first time but never felt as stranger. Also, our family was more worried about our safety as we traveled alone with kids, but the Indian Excursions Team made the entire journey very safe and organized. This trip is one of the memorable vacation we ever had.

Unforgettable experience

The entire process, from planning to traveling, was seamless! Madeleine was available to answer all of our questions and hear our requests. She planned an amazing itinerary for our group of 17. Shiv met us upon arrival and was our point of contact (along with our guide) throughout the trip. They checked in on us multiple times and were always available via WhatsApp for questions/requests. We all had an amazing time. The customer service Indian Excursions provides is unmatched. If we travel to India again, we will travel with Indian Excursions and will recommend their company to friends/family.

Amazing holiday from start to finish

From starting the process to create our holiday, time during and finally finishing, it was an amazing, hassle free and genuine experience. Indian Excursions were able create a be-spoke experience which completely met our specific expectations. Their attention to detail was outstanding and even though we had a jam packed agenda we never once felt too busy, as we never had to worry about anything. Even late changes were no problem to Maddie and her team. If you decide to do other areas of India, you'd have a guaranteed customer from the Hirani family. Rakesh out driver was absoutely amazing and took really good care of us! Always calm and chirpy! Our guides were really knowledgeable!

Royal tour of Rajasthan

Our vacation in Rajasthan and UP with Maddie and Shiv was wonderful. The itinerary was meticulously planned and well described. During our stay, there was always someone to meet us at each new destination and the guides were friendly and knowledgeable. Our driver Keshav was an island of calm in the chaos of Indian traffic, Highly recommend doing a stay at Dev Shree. We had a great time!

After working with Indian Excursions…

After working with Indian Excursions Co. to plan our Delhi/Agra vacation, I can confidently say that it was an excellent decision. Maddie was extremely knowledgeable and listened carefully to our preferences, then provided me with suggestions that met our (budget and availability) expectations. On arrival, we were warmly greeted by Shiv and his skillful driver Deena Nath. They took us to our hotel safely and efficiently. We had a superb tour guide named Pushpendra Singh Deora. He took us through Old Delhi, New Delhi and Agra with so much comfort and ease. He is very knowledgeable of all the historical sites and took care of all our special requests. The entire crew of Indian Excursions Co. made our travel experience very memorable and magical.

What an amazing holiday!

What an amazing holiday! Indian Excursions took care of everything down to the smallest details. We initially feared that some of the extra excursions, such as the dinners and dance performances were going to be tourist traps, but they turned out to be some our most memorable times in India. Thank you for all the extra research it must have taken. Sanjay, our driver couldn't have been better. Thanks again for making our trip so incredible, we can't wait to come back.

It was our first trip to India. Through the hard work and expertise of Madeleine, Shiv and team (and special shout out to Sanjay our fabulous driver) we had a perfect first trip to Rajasthan. Madeleine was great in helping us put the itinerary together and to help us find the right mix of mid level and high end hotels and she had great suggestions on how long to stay in each location .The local tour guides she organised in each major city were excellent On reflection, there is nothing we would change. If we are able to visit India again we would definitely book with Madeleine and the team
