There is a wide range of prices depending on the features you are looking for, so it shouldn’t be too problematic if you just stick to a plan. If it’s not likely that you’ll use the alarm in a practical setting, there is no need to pick one up if it’s beyond your budget.

You never want to spend too much money on one resource when it comes to security. It’s better to diversify your spending to make sure you are covered for a wide range of scenarios.

Not much point to an alarm if you can’t hear it. Sure, there are silent alarms that can notify you or blink a lot for you, but those have niche applications.

We want our perimeter alarms to be LOUD and deter whatever animal is coming through or let us know anywhere on our property of an intruder.

They have a firing mechanism (pull pin), a firing pin, and a detent to hold a wide range of rounds.

Warning : Using live ammo, or any unintended ammunition (like flares) can be extremely dangerous in a trip wire alarm, regardless of whether it is unattended. Even with blanks you should practice firearm safety and avoid pointing the business end at people. Do not set the trap until you are ready for it to be live- anticipate accidental discharge.

• Pick a Spot – Pick a site where the approach fits a tripwire well, and possibly obscures the wire so it is easier to hide. You will need a solid mounting point for the alarm itself.
• Mount – Mount your alarm securely using zip ties or screws. Make sure it is not visible from the approach side. Be sure to not load it yet.
• Set Perimeter – Run your tripwire from the alarm across the perimeter approach line. Depending on whether you are using USGS tripwire or fishing line, there is some difference in how far you can run the line.
• Set Alarm – Pull the firing pin ring, set the pull pin, and tie the perimeter line to the alarm.
• Load Alarm – Always load the alarm last. No reason to misfire as you are setting it up.

Lastly, have a plan for when the alarm goes off. Being alarmed without a plan of action won’t do you much good.

I found that I wasn't disturbed by the light when it was on my partner's nightstand if I was facing the other direction. But if your partner is a light sleeper, they may wake up from the brightness.  

Almost everything about the SmartSleep Connected is customizable. You can set over a dozen alarms with different light hues, several sound options — from waves to birds to Nepal bowls — and varying snooze lengths. You can choose how long before your alarm goes off you want the wake-up cycle to begin, between 5 and 40 minutes. 

You'll need the accompanying SleepMapper app ( iOS and Android ) for most of this functionality. The app is easier than the on-device controls, which could be a bit clunky.

For a reliable, difficult-to-ignore, and nearly silent alarm, a wearable is the way to go. Usually, I wear an Apple Watch and am consistently awoken when it vibrates on my wrist when the alarm goes off.

Despite the name, the Sonic Bomb Extra-Loud Alarm Clock doesn't solely rely on sound to wake you up. Put the puck-like shaker under your mattress, and the vibration will almost certainly jolt you awake. 

It's not exactly a pleasant way to wake up, and the vibration isn't silent either. But for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, a physical alarm that isn't sound-based could be useful if a light-based alarm isn't reliable enough. 

If you sleep with a partner in your bed, there's a good chance this alarm will wake them up too. Even with a very thick mattress, I could feel the alarm buzzing from the other side of the bed. The resulting sound wasn't very muffled, either. 

I liked that this alarm was pretty customizable for the price. You can wake up with just the vibration or a buzzing sound or combine them. The tone of the buzzer can be changed, and you can opt to turn the flashing lights on or off. 

I was also impressed by the customizable snooze functionality. The ability to change the duration isn't something you always find on budget-friendly alarm clocks. 

While there are two alarms, you have to remember to toggle between them if you don't want your weekday alarm going off on Saturdays, though you can choose to have both go off every day.

For those who like to fall asleep to music or podcasts and wake up with sound cues, a comfortable pair of sleep headphones can be a great solution. AcousticSheep's SleepPhones are breathable and washable and can go days without you needing to charge them. 

I listen to audiobooks to fall asleep, and it was nice knowing that my alarm would play through the headphones in the morning. After the alarm went off, I would invariably leave the headphones on and paired to my phone by accident. Yet they lasted well over a week without me needing to charge them.

When I did need to charge the headphones, I pulled the module out of a pouch in the headband. You can wash the SleepPhones, but you need to remove all the components first. Unlike some sleep headphones I tried, the pouch concealed any blinking light you sometimes get with Bluetooth devices. 

However, I did need to download a third-party alarm app. This was true of every pair of headphones I tried. Even if they were connected to my iPhone, the native alarm app would play through the phone's speakers instead of to my headphones. That really defeats the purpose if you're trying not to wake anyone else up. 

The SleepPhones are available in either fleece or a more breathable fabric that reminded me of workout shorts. While the bands come in three sizes, the fact that I couldn't adjust the size was a problem. The medium sometimes felt too constricting when I was trying to sleep. 

In addition to getting insight from Kelly Waters , MD, a sleep specialist at Spectrum Health, I tested seven different silent alarm clocks and evaluated them based on the following criteria: 

Setup: For each alarm, I tried to set it up without reading the instructions to see how intuitive they were. I then set them up again after reading the manual to make sure the directions were easy to follow.  

Performance: I used each alarm for at least three nights. I evaluated how easy it was to set alarms, whether the alarm consistently woke me up, and how difficult it was to shut off and snooze the alarms. For at least one night, I put the alarm on my partner's side of the bed or had him use it so I could see if I was disturbed when he woke up. 

Special features: I tested features such as Bluetooth or WiFi connectivity, accompanying mobile apps, wind-down programs, and night lights to see if they were helpful and simple to use. 

Durability: To test how breakable each alarm clock was, I pushed each off my nightstand. They all passed this test, though the Mesqool's battery cover did pop off. (I was able to put it back on.) 

Long-term use: After testing, I'm continuing to use our top picks to monitor for durability and usability.

What is a silent alarm clock?  

There are two ways to look at it: It's either something like a wake-up light that makes no noise, or it's something like a vibrating alarm that, while not necessarily silent, can wake up someone who can't hear a sound-based alarm.

How do silent alarm clocks work? 

"Even in sleep, the brain is still processing your environment," Kelly Waters , MD, a sleep specialist at Spectrum Health, told Insider Reviews in an email. "Any abrupt change to that stasis will elicit a response, whether the abrupt noise of an alarm, vibration, movement, or light." How do sunrise or wake-up light alarm clocks work? 

"These rely on the natural waking response to ambient light," said Waters. "The brain will be susceptible to waking when it is naturally in lighter sleep." She warns that these aren't precise and may not work for everyone, including heavy sleepers.

Honestly, a very well machined and finished product for the money. The only thing I recommend doing is de-burring the very end of the pin. There was a little bit of a burr, but I don't think it would affect the function at all. My only issue with any of these units is that it's hard to find a seriously loud blank. They are sufficient, but nothing close to a gunshot. That's simply because it doesn't have a barrel to generate pressure. Still very good though!

What's A Trip Wire Alarm And How Can I Make One?

I remember as a kid, my little brother used to love playing tricks on me. One of his favorite shenanigans was to hide in a corner quietly and wait for me, the unassuming sister, to cross his path. When I did, he'd jump out and lay down in front of me quickly, causing me to tumble to the ground and start crying. He called his little game, "Tripper". Needless to say, I hated it.

So what does this little anecdote have to do with a trip wire alarm system? Honestly, more than you'd think. My brother had figured out a system (albeit using his body rather than a real wire) that has been around for over a hundred years now. He was using his body to topple me over, thus incapacitating me and making it difficult for me to get up right after I fell. All he was missing was an alarm. Although he probably didn’t want an alarm, or he would have gotten in trouble with mom.

You are probably familiar with the term “trip wire.” These simple mechanisms have been used in wartime, in hunting traps, and in security systems. The basic idea is to have something, usually, a wire (although, as you will see later, lasers can be used as well) stretched out across a path or doorway, Trip wires are attached to two fixed points, such as fence posts or trees. The tripwire should be firmly fixed in place, so that it is taut enough to trigger when a person or animal trips over it, or causes it to move at all.

The earliest trip wire systems were attached to bells instead of a modern alarm. When the wire triggered, it would pull on the bell, causing it to ring and notifying anyone nearby that intruders were in the area. These systems were also used to set off bombs when enemies encroached on home territory during WWI. Enemies approached, activated the tripwire and caused the firing pin to lose tension and go off. Despite the incredible damage these bombs did, the system was undeniably elegant. This system was also used to trigger an attack alarm, notifying soldiers to be ready to fight.

Trip wire alarms today

Today, trip wire alarms are much more technologically advanced. Many systems incorporate laser technology that will sound an alarm if someone were to step across the laser. That’s right, you read that correctly. Lasers. Not exactly like the rotating lasers in Get Smart or the James Bond films, because these laser systems are invisible. No glowy red lines crisscrossing all over your yard and house, just simple, understated, invisible technology.

This kind of technology has a couple of advantages:

While burglars or intruders may be a little bit less likely to run away if they can’t see the tripwire, police can be notified without their knowledge, making it easier for police to catch potential trespassers or intruders.

Let’s be honest, it’s pretty cool that laser technology is becoming a relevant part of home security. Technological upgrades like this mean that these kinds of alarm can be wireless and much more aesthetically pleasing.

So how do laser trip wire alarms work, exactly?

Well, there are a few different components. Obviously, there are your lasers. These are created using a laser diode (a mechanism by which laser beams are produced) reflected against a light sensor. These are hooked up to a circuit board of some kind, which then talks to a computer that has been coded to do an action (whether that is to sound a buzzer, to call the police, to lock the doors, or all three). When the beam of the laser is broken, a switch will flip on the circuit board, which will then trigger the computerized response, notifying you of any intruders in the area.

Who is this technology for?

There are many uses for tripwire alarms. Most often, you’d think of them in relation to home security. A tripwire system can make for a great perimeter alarm around your home.

There are also some fairly easy do-it-yourself alarm systems that you can put up just about anywhere. YouTube is full of DIY project tutorials on how to make simple tripwire systems out of a laser pointer. These simpler systems will require a battery to power them unless you want to plug them in. They are created by setting up the laser pointer and reflecting it against a light sensor. This sensor is hooked up to a circuit board of some kind, which then tells the computer that has been coded to do something (whether that is to sound a buzzer or to send you a text message). When the beam of the laser pointer is broken, (the equivalent of someone tripping over a wire) a switch will flip on the circuit board, which will then trigger the computerized response, notifying you of any intruders in the area.

The possibilities for these are endless. If you’re in a college dorm, and you suspect that your roommates are stealing your food, set up a device in the cupboard with your food. You’ll be able to catch them in the act (I fantasized about this as a freshman). Hackaday.com offers an alternative possibility: installing one in your office space so that if someone walks in, you can act distracted. If you’re a hunter, it wouldn’t be too hard to set one of these up as a trap. Below is a video of one way to make a trip wire alarm.

DIY trip wire alarm with fishing line

If you don’t want a tripwire alarm that’s quite as technologically advanced as a laser-run system, or you don’t trust yourself to be able to code a circuit board to do what you need, you can fashion your own tripwire alarm out of some very simple elements, including fishing line, some kind of lever, and a bell or alarm.

The first thing you will need to do to set up your simple tripwire is locate the area in which you hope to set up your system. This should be in an area that you feel is vulnerable, or an area through which, you are worried that an intruder might be able to access your home. You need to have two anchor points. These points could be trees, bushes, lawn light fixtures , or for a much better system, you could use hidden stakes that you drive into the ground. Next you will stretch the fishing line tautly between the two anchor points. On one side, you will need to tie the fishing line around the stake. On the other side you will twist the line around the stake, and you can tie it as well, but be sure not to cut the line, as you will be running the line up to a bell that you anchor in a tree near a window, or on the window ledge itself. Make sure the bell is loud enough that you will be able to hear it from inside your house.

Once you have anchored the bell in place, you will tie the fishing line right above the bulge at the top of the bell. Your system is complete! Before you leave it, though, you should test it out. You will want to apply some pressure to the line. If you hear the bell ring loudly, your system should work great. If the bell only rings faintly, you will need to pull the line more taut. This should ensure that the bell rings loudly. Alternatively, you can attach the line directly to the clapper and see if that produces a louder noise.

This kind of alarm will go off no matter who crosses it, be it animal or human. If possible, you should run the line at knee-level, so many animals will be able to scamper under the line without triggering the alarm.

Laser security systems, while cool, are not the only way that you can protect your property from unwelcome visitors. Other gadgets are available as well. In this video, Sensible Prepper explains how to make six DIY perimeter alarms:

1. Hand Grenade Top and Shotgun Primer

Yes, you read that right. For this alarm, you’ll simply need to purchase shotgun primers (available online or at most gun shows) and a hand grenade top (with the rest of the grenade removed of course). You’ll also need a tripwire and a nail.

Set the grenade top through the screw first through the drilled holes. Then hammer your nail into a tree at about knee height or lower. Tie your tripwire to the grenade top, and place a shotgun primer into the grenade top. When the tripwire is yanked, the shotgun primer will go off to alert you to danger.

2. Mousetrap and Pistol Primers Method

This one is incredibly simple: Just prime your mousetrap and set your pistol primers on the trap, positioned so that they will go off when they come into contact with the spring. Wrap a tripwire around the spring and, when it’s pulled, the spring will launch forward and strike the primers.

3. Sentry Alarm Mines with .22 Blanks

Sentry Alarm Mines are trip alarms that have a trigger that can be angled upwards with a spring. You then place a blank .22 caliber round into the bottom of the mine.

Attach a string to the trigger and set it up as a tripwire by running it between the mine and a nail hammered into a tree. When the tripwire is pulled, it will yank the trigger and cause the blank to go off.

4. Fithops 209 Trip Alarm

Another choice is the Fithops 209 Trip Alarm that strikes shotgun primers. You simply cok the firing pin back to the rear and lock it into place with the aid of a pin. Attach a tripwire to the pin, and when yanked, it will cause the firing pin to strike forward and strike the primer.

5. Fithops 12 Gauge Trip Alarm

The Fithops 12 Gauge Trip Alarm is a bit of an upgrade over the Fithops 209. Not only is it built out of a more durable steel with a hard coat anodized finish (rather than the 209’s aluminum), it can be used with 12 gauge blanks, which may be more commonly available than simply the primers.

Silent Alarm Options for Your Security System

Most people associate alarm systems with noise and panic. After all, security companies often advertise a blaring siren response upon alarm activation. Both burglar and fire emergencies usually warrant this type of reaction. However, in some cases, silent alarm options create a more effective response than a panic-inducing one. Today, we will examine some of these situations, as well as how we help prepare our customers for them.

We will begin by looking at how our alarm panel itself prepares customers for a worst-case scenario. From there, we will look at panic buttons that create a central station response without a siren activation. These buttons can be installed in place or be mobile, and we will look at both options. From there, we will examine how your smartphone can create a discreet alarm response if necessary. This recent offering has quickly become one of our most popular silent alarm options. Now, let’s dive in with a look at how your alarm system likely has a built-in feature allowing for a silent emergency response.

Have a Duress Code Programmed into Your Alarm

In our post on Avoiding Common Security Mistakes , we pointed out that burglars prefer victimizing empty houses. In fact, in that post we shared that nearly 3 out of 4 burglaries occur in empty homes. Of course, burglars wish to avoid getting caught, so this statistic should come as no surprise. However, this does not make the fear of a break-in while you are home less potent. A home invasion that puts criminals and residents in a home together represents a worse-case security scenario. Sometimes, these situations turn violent. We urge homeowners to stay as non-confrontational as possible under these circumstances.

However, what about cases where the alarm’s siren is screaming during this exact situation? Surely the burglar will tell the homeowner to disarm the security system. If completed, of course, this action will also cancel any police response created by the alarm. With this prospect in mind, we often program a “duress code” into our customers’ alarm panels. This code turns the alarm’s siren off. At the same time, it sends a silent signal to our central station. Rather than cancelling a police response, a duress code often speeds it up. Our central station calls the local police and alerts them to a potential home invasion. We urge alarm customers to ensure they are given this security when installing an alarm. Now, let’s look at how panic buttons provide a couple unique silent alarm options for our customers.

Take Advantage of Silent Panic Buttons

Panic buttons add security by allowing a quick alarm response even if the security system is disarmed. Activating a panic button sends an immediate central station response and, in many cases, creates a siren response as well. However, we also offer panic buttons that create a central station response with no siren response at all! In this section, we look at a couple silent panic options for your alarm system. Let’s start by focusing on panic buttons that we install in the most likely places that you will need them.

Permanently Installed Panic Buttons

Both business owners and homeowners often install panic buttons in high-importance areas. For example, store owners may install panic buttons underneath counters. In a hold-up situation, this creates the ideal alarm response. After all, activating a siren with a potentially-armed robber in front of the register is not an ideal response. Therefore, silent panic buttons are a security staple in the retail world. Furthermore, our central station gives both an address and a location description to the authorities upon an alarm activation. This means that the police will arrive knowing of a potential hold-up at a retail or commercial location.

In homes, our customers often install these devices in their bedrooms. We urge our customers to arm their security systems after everyone arrives home for the day. Doing so can scare a burglar away if someone does attempt a break-in overnight. However, customers who do not follow this advice may awake to the sound of an intruder in the home. At this point, sounding the alarm’s siren can create a more dangerous situation. A silent panic response will send the police, without creating a siren response or a phone call from the central station. Now that we’ve looked at a couple silent alarm options that stay in place, let’s look at a couple options that remain mobile as customers move about their property.

Panic Devices that Travel with You

Obviously, stationary panic devices installed in areas of specific importance will ensure that people around these areas always have help at their fingertips. However, some people like having the security of a mobile panic button available at all times. For example, elderly homeowners often purchase medical pendants or wristbands that call for an ambulance if needed. Activating these devices generally causes the alarm keypad to “beep” softly to alert anyone in the home that the device has been activated, but medical panic buttons will not activate an alarm’s siren.

Furthermore, we offer key fobs that many alarm customers use to arm and disarm their security systems. These remotes provide the most convenient option for controlling alarm systems in both homes and businesses. Additionally, these remotes allow users to activate a panic response by simultaneously holding down both the “arm” and “disarm” keys for a few seconds. Doing so sends an immediate panic signal to the alarm panel, just like the stationary panic devices we described in the previous section. Depending on our customers’ preference, we can program this panic signal to create an audible or silent alarm response. This makes a key fob remote a great mobile silent alarm option for customers looking for this security. Now, let’s look at a unique service that allows customers to use their phones to discreetly activate a security system!

Use Your Smartphone to Create a Silent Panic Response

Up to this point, the silent alarm options described in this post require users to be onsite. However, we do offer a unique option that puts both audible and silent panic responses at users’ fingertips at all times. We can offer alarm customers this option when they take advantage of our interactive cellular monitoring service. Cellular monitoring involves installing a cellular dialer in an alarm panel to communicate with our central station. Cell dialers can monitor alarms in the absence of an onsite phone line. Some customers with phone lines still install cell dialers as a backup in case their phone lines go down. Since burglars often cut a home’s phone lines before committing a crime, we always recommend taking this precaution.

Additionally, our cellular dialer by Alarm.com also allows customers to control their alarm systems remotely. This is where the “interactive” part of interactive cell monitoring comes in. When customers have this service, they have control over their alarm at all times through the free Alarm.com app. This allows them to arm and disarm their security system with their smartphones at any time. How to set a silent, vibrating alarm on your Apple Watch

You don't have to wake everyone up when your alarm goes off.

The latest Apple Watches are highly capable wearables that serve a wide range of purposes. One of the lesser-known features they offer is the ability to set a silent alarm that gently vibrates on your wrist. This is ideal for those who dislike alarm sounds or don't want to disturb those around them. Whether you have an Apple Watch Ultra 2 running watchOS 10 or a slightly older model, the steps you need to follow are the same.

Using your iphone.

The first method relies on your nearby, paired iPhone.

• Launch the Watch app on your iPhone.
• Scroll down and select on Clock .
• Enable Push Alerts from iPhone by tapping the slider to the right until it turns green to confirm.
• Go back a page and select Sounds & Haptics from the Watch app.
• Enable the Silent Mode toggle by tapping it to the right so it turns green.
• Close to Watch app and open the built-in Clock app on your iPhone.
• Click on Alarms in the bottom menu bar.
• Tap the plus ( + ) icon in the top right corner.
• Set the time of the alarm and adjust the other options as you see fit.
• Click on Sound .
• Scroll to the bottom of the list of alarm sounds, and select None .
• Go back and Save the alarm.

Now, whenever the alarm goes off, it won't play a sound on either device. Instead, your Apple Watch will gently vibrate on your wrist.

Using just your Apple Watch

You can alternatively rely on your Apple Watch exclusively.

• Open the Control Center on your Apple Watch by clicking its Side button.
• Enable Silent Mode by tapping the Bell-shaped icon. It will turn red and have a line through it to confirm that sound is now off.
• Open the Alarms app on your Apple Watch.
• Click on the plus ( + ) icon.
• Set the time of the alarm.
• Tap the Green Tick .

That's it! Your iPhone could be turned off or disconnected, but your Apple Watch will still wake you up by tapping your wrist silently. I use this feature every morning, and I can't imagine switching back to audio alarms ever again. The vibration gently wakes you up so it won't mess with your natural circadian rhythm or jolt you awake. Rather, you can wake up gradually and turn on the music or other audio once you're ready to get your morning started. If you sleep in the same bed with someone else, or your room is close to others, using a vibrating alarm also won't bother other people. Spouses/partners, kids, and roommates will appreciate that, especially if you wake up much earlier than them!

Make sure, however, that your Apple Watch is charged sufficiently before going to bed. You wouldn't want to arrive late to work or school because of a dead Apple Watch that failed to wake you up. It's also a good idea to test this method on a weekend, in case you unconsciously dismiss the vibrating alarm and go back to sleep. Personally, I've never failed to wake up using this method, but it's always a good idea to err on the side of caution if you are a lover of the snooze button.

Governor signs new law requiring silent panic alarm in all Utah schools

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Utah Gov. Spencer Cox signed new legislation into law that requires all schools in the Beehive State to install silent panic alarms in the event of mass shootings.

H.B. 84 establishes systems for schools to have increased safety in a range of emergency situations, like school shootings.

The bill includes Alyssa's Law, which requires Utah schools to install silent panic alarms.

Alyssa's Law is named after Alyssa Alhadeff, who died in the 2018 Parkland school shooting. Officials with Make Our Schools Safe , an organization that is working to make Alyssa's Law widespread, said that Alhadeff's life could have been saved if first responders were able to be alerted sooner.

According to Make Our Schools Safe's website , Alyssa's Law has passed in New Jersey, Florida, New York, Texas, Tennessee and Utah. Nine other states have introduced the law.

Tomashi Jackson Silent Alarm Pilar Corrias Conduit Street March 8 – April 6, 2024

Tomashi Jackson’s (SMACT ’12) first solo show with Pilar Corrias gallery, Silent Alarm , debuts new paintings that examine the underlying connections between riots, patterns of systemic oppression, and community sound systems.

In her new paintings, Jackson visualises correlations between several historic Los Angeles- and London-based events, informed by archival research, first-person interviews, and her personal memories. These include layered stills from news coverage and documentaries on uprisings sparked by police violence and demonstrations for educational access that were met with excessive force, such as: the 1965 Watts Rebellion; the 1968 L.A. Chicano Student Walkouts, the UK Black Education Movement of the 1960s and 70s, 1992 L.A. Riots, which were precipitated by the acquittal of LAPD officers who were filmed beating unarmed motorist Rodney King, and the killing of Latasha Harlins in 1991; the 1976 Notting Hill Carnival; the public response to the 1981 New   Cross Fire; the UK student demonstrations in 2010; and the uprisings that followed the killing of unarmed Mark Duggan by London police in 2011. Jackson also activates imagery relating to the sounds of the communities in focus, including Jazz and Blues from the 1950s, Freestyle Hip-Hop from the ’90s, Calypso from the ’70s, and Grime from the 2010s.
