With students from Europe and beyond starting with us every year, you will find new friends, a new passion and the skills to develop a career that will take you around the world.

Study in Sweden

Dalarna University is a top international study destination. The University has two campuses in Falun and Borlänge. Situated in the heart of Sweden, the Borlänge campus is the ideal home for your tourism studies. Set just a 2-hour train ride away from Stockholm and Arlanda, Sweden’s main international airport, Borlänge is the largest metropolitan area in the county of Dalarna.

If you are a winter sports fanatic, then you are in for a treat! Close to local ski slopes and three hours from Sweden’s largest ski resort, you can study all week and cruise the icy slopes or cross-country tracks at weekends whilst enjoying Dalarna’s natural beauty. Summer offers hiking, mountain biking, fishing and swimming in natural lakes in amongst Sweden’s gorgeous forests. There are also a wide range of cultural experiences nearby. From gigs and concerts  at Dalhalla , an old open air lime quarry to Gruppen, Sweden’s largest celebration of midsummer and Falu Great Copper Mountain, a World Heritage site, you can experience the traditional, the old, and the new and learn more about what makes Dalarna and Sweden so unique.

Innovative ITM Curriculum

As you delve into Dalarna’s multi-dimensional curriculum , you will notice that there is much more on offer than first meets the eye. As Sweden’s only Bachelor degree in Tourism taught entirely in English, you are connected to researchers who work around the globe. Your studies will provide a balanced blend of practical application and theoretical knowledge through interactions with your lecturers, peers and guest researchers. Through your studies, you will gain an in-depth understanding of the importance of the tourism industry on a global scale, acquiring industry relevant knowledge and an appreciation for the complex interactions between destinations, tourists, community and the environment.

Through site visits, on-site experiences, and fieldwork, every ITM student at Dalarna University gets to explore the ways in which cultural and natural attractions communicate to visitors. You will get the opportunity to talk to and work with local tourism businesses and help them plan for the future. You will also get the opportunity to develop and extend your knowledge on an exchange term abroad with a partner university. You can choose from various courses in Tourism Studies, Service Management, Business Administration and Economics in destinations such as Italy, Canada, Norway, the UK and France. You come back to finish your degree at Dalarna University with a wider appreciation of tourism and its role in both local and global economies.

“In the ITM programme there are chances to get out and meet people from the tourism industry. In my case, I was able to travel to a big tourism fair (ITB) in Berlin and represent Dalarna University. I met so many great people and they became really great friends. By falling in love with this country, I’m still here and planning my future in Sweden!” – Katrin Weiler, ITM graduate

Global Research Pioneers

Tourism at Dalarna University is also about world-class research. The Centre for Tourism and Leisure Research (CeTLeR) works to develop cooperation with regional businesses and the tourism industry. Research focuses on the challenges facing the region’s tourism industry and looks at the marketing and development of tourism destinations, as well as the effects of the events on local societies. With a local focus but a global reach, all the researchers at the centre are also involved in teaching providing you with up-to-date research informed teaching.

Bachelors in International Tourism Management Dalarna University Falun and Borlänge

Bachelors

About Dalarna University:

Dalarna University's mission is to co-create education, training, and research in Dalarna and the world. Approximately 5,000 students study at Campus Falun or Campus Borlänge and approximately 9,500 of their students study online. Education at the university takes place in close collaboration with the outside world and research. Dalarna University (Swedish: Dalarna University) is a public university (university) located in Falun and Borlange, two areas in the secluded Dalarna County, in Sweden. Dalarna University is one of the newest universities in Sweden, founded in 1977. It is located in Dalarna, 200 km northwest of Stockholm, and takes its name from the city.

About Sweden:

Sweden is one of the most educationally recognized places in the world. They continue to offer the opportunity for new beginnings and still cultivate ambition and drive within the students who choose Sweden as their country of choice.

About the city:

Dalarna County (county) borders Norway in the west and occupies a large area of land in central Sweden. It extends about 350 kilometers southeast from the remote and rugged terrain of Grövelsjön and Idre in the northwest, which means it is far away from the Stockholmers’ holiday.

At its core is the gleaming water of Lake Siljan, which looks like a mirror in the midsummer sun, surrounded by fabulous forests and rolling hills, dotted with perfect red huts that depict Sweden’s Life in the country. Dalarna is also the origin of the iconic painted Dalahäst, which is the center of Swedish folklore.

Who is a tourist? Why do they visit particular destinations? How can we create sustainable practices and places? We are looking for students who question the way the world works. We are looking for students who want to know how tourism can help people, what tourism can do for communities and what the challenges for the future of tourism are. Students from all over the world and from any background are welcome to apply.

The focus of the program is to provide students with the knowledge to succeed. We do this by offering a balanced combination of theoretical knowledge and applied practical examples. Students will work with destinations to plan for the future; they will visit heritage sites and think about how these sites present themselves to the public; and they learn through real examples of research being undertaken in Sweden, Europe and the rest of the world. We also expect all out students to go on exchange – what better way to experience tourism than by travelling and learning as part of your studies?

scholarships are only available in the second year of studies, based on excellent study results during the first year of studies.

Svetlana from Russia

I liked the town of Borlänge. It felt cosy and quiet. But despite its not being a big city, I could still find everything I needed there for my social life: the shopping centre Kupolen, the fitness centre Friskis and Svettis, a swimming centre and, of course, night clubs. One of my best memories is the music festival Peace and Love. We wrote a paper about this festival for one of my classes.

Tourism/Destination Development is always topical. New travel destinations are appearing all the time. Moreover, people from different countries are discovering new places of interest: for example, in Russia, there is growing interest in South America and South-East Asia, and places such as these are becoming more and more popular.

As soon as I returned to Russia, I got a job at a four-star Eurasia Business Hotel (Russia, Tyumen City) as an event coordinator in the Sales and Marketing Department, and so was able to use my knowledge and study experience.

Eva from Germany

Laetitia from France

Sweden was totally unknown to me and I was among so many students with different nationalities. I couldn't understand them, my English was far from being good, but I made new friends, learnt, and got the language quite fast. I loved my courses. The educational system was great and suited me really well, I started to travel around and I made myself real friends. I couldn't leave Sweden! I just didn't want the experience to end.

I found an internship in Sweden, and then decided to apply to the Tourism Master's Programmed at DU and was accepted. The TDD programme was a great year. I learned a lot and also discovered a passion for the tourism field. Somehow, Sweden inspired me that year and I wanted to do so many things – I took Swedish and Russian courses, I wrote a blog while writing my thesis at the same time (which was my first thesis ever). The thesis was a real challenge, but I made it in time and graduated with all my classmates. It was true satisfaction. But I still couldn't leave.

After another internship abroad, I am back in Sweden for good, with a job in the tourism field in Stockholm. No dream job for now, but probably a dream career to come, and thanks to my TDD master degree!

Three years ago, I took a decision that I didn't know would change my whole life. It might sound cliché but it is real, and I don't regret any piece of it.

Student life in Borlänge may not seem that big at first, but the diverse range of cultures I met in Borlänge was extraordinary. I made countless friends, and traveling around the world to meet up with them again has been a nice touch.
