For fans of Celtic Punk music, one of the standards that all other bands will be measured up to is The Pogues. With a long standing history in the field, fans look forward to hearing the distinct tin whistle and banjo combinations that have been part of their tradition since 1982. All it will take is one look at their first album in 1984 “Red Roses for Me” to hear the impact they made on the Celtic music culture. The Pouges are the standard of Celtic Punk band music.

One of the unique things that makes The Pogues a fan favorite is the laid back vibe that comes with attending one of their concerts. Part of this comes from their name, the original name of the band was Pogue Mahoneof the Irish póg mo thóin, meaning "kiss my arse“

Though due to the death of guitarist Phillip Chevron, the band has not been touring or releasing new music. The last album they released was in October of 2013 which was a box collection of all of their studio albums and a previously unreleased live album from 1991 featuring former guitarist Joe Strummer.

Biografie - The Pogues

shane in bestform

die pogues halt, sind immer eine reise wert, hab sie jetzt zum 3. mal gesehen, und es war mega gut,so wie immer, weiss nicht wär breiter war,ich oder shan :-)))

‘We’ll Have Another Round!’: The Mad Celtic Genius of Shane MacGowan

By Rob Sheffield

Rob Sheffield

Raise a farewell toast for Shane MacGowan , one of rock’s most fiendishly brilliant growlers, snarlers, songwriters, storytellers, and blackguards. Shane was the resident Celt-punk genius of The Pogues , one of the great Irish bards of his or any other era, which is why the world is mourning his death on Thursday. But Shane’s demise has been predicted so many times, over 65 years of hard living, it’s bizarrely shocking that the end has finally come. Hell, in one of his best-loved songs, “The Sick Bed of Cuchulain,” he interrupts his own funeral, snarling, “They’ll take you to Cloughprior/They’ll shove you in the ground/But you stick your head back out and shout, ‘We’ll have another round!’”

If there’s a song that sums up his mad genius, it’s one he didn’t even write: “The Auld Triangle,” the Brendan Behan prison ballad he used to sing with the Pogues. It’s his fiercest vocal tour de force, over accordion and tin whistle, turning it into his own life story. Shane rasps about lost men in prison, crying over girls who forgot them years ago, choking on voices that have gone unheard so long they’re barely human. He chews on every line and spits it out, for verse after verse. The song is a prison cell he’ll never escape. So many singers have done “The Auld Triangle,” from Behan to Bono to Bobby D, but nobody’s ever made it sound as lonely as Shane.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Whenever people dismissed the Pogues as a band of drunk Irish louts, Shane would shrug and say, “We’re not really Irish.” They were immigrant’s children, natives of nowhere, and they played their rootsy music to dramatize how far they were from their roots. No songwriter chronicled the immigrant experience like Shane did, tapping into all the angst and revelry of the Celtic diaspora. As he said, “The Irish stuff wasn’t new to the audience, the rock & roll wasn’t new to the audience, but the mixture of the two was. The idea that you could headbang to your mum and dad’s old records, to the Dubliners and stuff like that.”

Dropkick Murphys, Cat Power to Honor Sinéad O'Connor and Shane MacGowan at NYC Concert

The libertines go full libertine with shane macgowan 'fairytale' tribute performances, the pogues reissue 'fairytale of new york' as charity single honoring shane macgowan.

MacGowan was born on Christmas 1957 to Irish immigrants in England, who soon moved back to County Tipperary. He grew up on the farm, soaking up local folklore and songs, until the family moved to London when he was eight. In London, he was an outsider, despised by the English kids. “I was beaten up a lot,” he recalls in his book A Drink With Shane MacGowan . “They used to say, ‘Oi, Paddy, sing us an Irish song.’” The bullies would command him to sing the rebel song “Kevin Barry,” then beat him up for the anti-Brit lyrics — a lesson for him in how much trouble he could make with a song, but also about how to turn symbols of oppression into weapons.

The only English place he felt at home was his Uncle Frank’s pub in London, near the Dagenham Ford factory where generations of Irish laborers worked. As Shane recalled, “I loved being allowed to stand behind the bar, watching all the fights and the band playing Irish songs, which I knew.” He wrote one of his biggest hits about that place, “Sally MacLennane,” calling it “the pub where I was born,” only a slight exaggeration. It’s where the workers gather to drink and sing about the homes they can never go back to; they can’t escape the bar just as they can’t escape the songs. In so many ways, all his songs start out in that pub.

But he truly found his voice with the Pogues, inspired by heroes like the Dubliners or the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. “There was no generation gap with the Pogues, we weren’t just playing to teenagers,” he said. “We were doing showband music but putting a massive kick up the arse into it as well as traditional Irish music so we were taking seriously stuff that hadn’t been taken seriously in pop music before.”

You can hear that in a song like “The Body of an American,” his toughest tale. It’s a Celt-punk funeral march for a rich Irish-American boxer who retires to the Irish countryside, so he can die on “the shores where his fathers lay.” Big Jim Dwyer has the sentimental Yank fantasy of returning to the homeland he never really came from, where the locals despise him. When he dies, they break into his house to drink his booze and turn it into a party. As Shane yells, “Fifteen minutes later we had our first taste of whiskey/There was uncles giving lectures on ancient Irish history/The men all started telling jokes and the women they got frisky/By 5 o’clock in the evening every bastard there was piss-key!”

But by the last verse, Shane’s at the harbor, saying goodbye to his sweetheart he’s leaving behind. He’s boarding the boat to Amerikay, to start the cycle all over again. He knows he’ll never make it back home again — but also that he’ll never really escape.

The Pogues found their most hardcore fans in the U.S., as Shane always knew they would. They chronicled the strange obsessive romance between Ireland and America, between immigrants and natives. For their first album cover, they posed under a portrait of JFK, and named the album after the last words that went through Jackie Kennedy’s mind in Dallas, seeing people with flowers, right before the shots rang out. (“I remember thinking, ‘How funny—red roses for me.’”) Their songs had all the contradictions of the Irish diaspora — the yearning for the old sod vs. the desperate urge to break free. For many fans around the globe, Shane’s spewed-up-in-church voice was one we’d been waiting to hear our whole lives. That’s what makes him massively influential on artists with a Celtic tinge — you can’t imagine LCD Soundsystem, The Hold Steady, or Post Malone without him — as well as folk-punks like Gogol Bordello.

But the Pogues finally cut him loose in 1991, as his drinking and drugging blew out of control. I saw him live in NYC in November 1995, after the release of his long-long-long-awaited solo debut, The Snake . A great album (“The Snake With Eyes of Garnet”!), but at this point, his music was overshadowed by his self-destructive image. The MC introduced Shane with the words, “Here’s a guy who’s not gonna be around much longer…Because he’s going to Philadelphia tomorrow!” The crowd roared. Shane played up his boozy-outlaw act to a cartoon extent — a couple of boyos behind me scoffed in their brogues, “Fookin’ London Irish!”

Trump Launches Another Attack on Judge's Daughter, This Time with Photos

'snl' cold open: indicted trump hawks bible complete with miranda rights, jerrod carmichael had a crush on tyler, the creator, so he invited the rapper to the emmy awards, beyonce finds a new freedom and redefines country music on 'cowboy carter' .

The fantastic 2001 book A Drink With Shane MacGowan is a dialogue with his wife, Victoria Mary Clarke, often in bars, a book full of literary arguments and horror stories. He lost his last teeth in 2008, got new ones (doing dental work on Shane — that’s like volunteering for combat duty), got confined to a wheelchair, got sober. Yet every time he rallied from a health crisis, the world was rooting for him. He seemed indestructibly tough — and in his music, he still does.

That’s the power of hearing Shane seize a song like “The Auld Triangle” and flip it into a new story. For him, it’s not just a song about being locked in a cell — it’s about being locked inside the song, haunted by all the ancient tunes your ancestors used to sing while starving on the farm, or rotting on a coffin ship across the ocean. The past is a trap you can’t elude, because the songs are always there to haunt you, chasing you around the globe when you’re trying to flee. He brought out that dread in Irish music, but he faced it with his own punk sense of stoic rogue bravado. It sums up the artistic legacy that makes him a giant, now and forever. Fare thee well, Shane MacGowan.

Printemps de bourges in bourges, france on sat, 08 apr 1989.

Shaun arrived on stage with a bottle of water. He was completly drunk and falled unable to sing. The guitarist replaced him. Big deception

West End Centre in Aldershot, UK on Mon, 18 Mar 1985

I attended this show, the first time I’d seen The Pogues. I was twelve days off my twenty-first birthday and six months into my training as a mental health nurse. As I recall the ticket was a birthday present from my friends, who I went to the gig with. What a riot! Everything I expected it to be and more. As I recall , I won a gallon of beer in a cat food eating competition, which supplemented our meagre spending money and enabled us to get pretty pissed. Spider gave me a swig from the half bottle he had… he’d given up playing and was sat on the edge of the stage. I bought a copy of ‘Red Roses for Me’ ,at the show, autographed by the band, which I still have. It remains one of my most prized possessions. Great to see the photos on your site.. brought back some memories. I saw the band a few more times, notably at Surrey Free Arts Festival, where they were joined by Joe Strummer (same year or’86) and Shane with The Popes at Leeds Heineken gig, Roundhay Park (possibly’92) singing ‘Good Golly, Miss Molly’ repeatedly until the plug was pulled! RIP Shane McGowan. Thank you for the music. George Atkinson, Leeds.

Riviera Theatre in Chicago, US on Wed, 02 Oct 1991

Joe Strummer was epic. Clash tunes played , with all the Irish Trad instruments. Brilliant 👌

The Vic Theatre in Chicago, US on Sat, 05 Dec 1987

Shane MacGowan was utterly brilliant that night.Greatest live performance I ever saw, kudos to the Pogues and Joe Strummer. The floor was a delirious mosh pit of frenzied bodies where pulsating Irish trad met Punk anarchy head on.Intoxicated brilliance was never more intoxicatingly brilliant!

Wolverhampton Civic Hall in Wolverhampton, UK on Thu, 11 Oct 1990

I was there with my wife and some friends. It was a brilliant night with all the standard hits plus some lesser known ones. Shane was pretty drunk and often went off or sat down and his voice was all over the place but still somehow brilliant. Being in our twenties we were in the thick of the mosh pit and I broke my glasses when they fell off. Shane came back on for the encore - The band played waltzing Matilda - perhaps the most moving performance of any song I have ever heard. I cried, everyone cried, his voice sent shivers down your spine. At the end the cheers went on forever. We all thought that could be his last show but history says otherwise. I've never been to a more emotional gig

Baths Hall in Scunthorpe, UK on Sun, 04 Dec 1988

I was there by chance, my irish family living in scunthorpe told me of this charity concert for mo gale, before there uk tour,. What a great suprize to see kirsty macColl as a guest appearance. It' was a fantastic night, did not come on stage till 11pm probably having a few refreshments, Shane was spot on with his vocals, not a lot of people new about the gig because it wasn't a sell out. one of the best pogues gigs out of em all that I attended

Barrowland in Glasgow, UK on Sun, 17 Mar 1991

I have never in my life been so anxious about attending a gig. Seeing The Pogues in my favourite venue on St Patrick’s Day would normally be a match made in heaven, but on this occasion there was a caveat. The ‘Old Firm’ as they were called then - Celtic & Rangers - had been drawn together in the Scottish Cup and they were playing earlier that day at Celtic Park. My mate - Brian - and I had tickets for both, but our team Celtic were going through a sticky patch at that time. A defeat in the Glasgow Derby on St Patrick’s day would have led to the gig being a wake. As it transpired the game will go down in history as one of the greatest ever Old Firm games as Celtic overturned the odds to record a memorable victory with four red cards issued on the day. The atmosphere when we eventually reached the Barras was electric. I have never been at a gig where so many of the audience were there so early and the party was in full swing an hour before the Pogues hit the stage. Shane McGowan was stone cold sober and revelled in the atmosphere; Spider had clearly over-indulged, but the gig was an absolute triumph. Chuck in appearances by both the recently released Gerry Conlon and Paul Hill of the Guildford Four on stage and you have the concert goers version of having all your ducks in a row. At times it felt like simultaneously the roof would come off and the floor give way, but had that happened such was the heaving mass of humanity on display I suspect we would have remained suspended in mid air, floating on the cloud of our collective elation. Today we mourn the loss of the ringmaster on that occasion - Shane McGowan - but there will be smiles to match the tears of mourning and gratitude for a life fully lived. 🙏

My first and one of the best gigs I've ever been to.

Riverside 1 in Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK on Thu, 04 Dec 1997

With the passing of Shane, I recall this concert as one of thee BEST I have ever witnessed. Shane went awol, found then plonked on stage some 90 mins after the scheduled start time. His eyes closed, griping the mic, he was out of it! But the music started and he was off, never missing a beat, screeching and hollering, feeding off the crowd. What a performance. What a gig. What a memory. Gartha Shane.

O2 Forum Kentish Town in London, UK on Fri, 17 Dec 1993

I was there, ages ago...it was a great show.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

2024 Tour of Flanders riders to watch

Men's race - 2024 riders to watch.

A mass crash during the Dwars door Vlaanderen on Wednesday ruled out some of his biggest contenders, including Wout van Aert, who suffered fractured collarbone and ribs. Defending champion Tadej Pogacar decided to skip the Ronde this year to focus on the preparation of the Giro d'Italia. The big names who will be competing are:

  • Mathieu van der Poel (NED/Alpecin Deceuninck): The two-time winner (2020, 2022) is considered the undisputed favourite after dominating the E3 Saxo Classic and finishing second at last week's Gent-Wevelgem, and with archrival van Aert not competing.
  • Matteo Jorgenson (USA/Team Visma | Lease a Bike): The American rider is expected to lead his team following his win at the Dwars door Vlaanderen and the injuries carried by both Tiesji Benoot and Jan Tratnik. This season he also claimed the general classification at the Paris-Nice.
  • Alberto Bettiol: The Italian is a former winner of the Ronde and, despite suffering from cramps at the recent Dwars door Vlaanderen, has demonstrated a good form by winning the Milano-Torino and finishing fifth at the Milan-San Remo.

Women's race - 2024 riders to watch

  • Lotte Kopecky (BEL/SD Worx-Protime): The Belgian superstar and reigning world champion is aiming for a third consecutive Flanders title after her convincing victories at Strade Bianche and Nokere Koerse so far this spring.
  • Demi Vollering (NED/SD Worx-Protime): The Tour de France Femmes reigning champion, who finished third at Strade Bianche, is ready to step up as a leader if Kopecky finds herself in difficulty.
  • Elisa Balsamo (ITA/Lidl-Trek): Italy's 2021 road world champion has impressed this season, showing that she can both climb and sprint by winning the Trofeo Alfredo Binda and the Brugge-De Panne.

Incredible upgrade from the version 2

Ernestos321527017 - Mar 24, 2024

I have three pairs of these, having replaced my two previous Victory Tour 2's that I had for two years. These have much better support and hug my feet better giving me more confidence taking big swings with the driver. Excellent traction and I do not get sore feet at all after a long round of 18 holes. Nike made some great improvements in the looks of this shoe as well. Much better contours and the finish of the leather is a lot more appealing with the pebble finish and perforated venting. A great shoe, my favorites to wear and that is with a collection of 12 golf shoes to choose from. ...

Beyoncé’s ‘Cowboy Carter’ Is Here, and It’s Much More Than Country

The superstar’s new LP is a 27-track tour of popular music with a Beatles cover, cameos by Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton, and features from Miley Cyrus and Post Malone.

  • Share full article

A woman in a cowboy hat and elaborately bejeweled jacket brings one hand to her chest and smiles in sunglasses.

By Ben Sisario

Beyoncé has gone country, sure … but it turns out that’s only the half of it.

For months, the superstar, who made her name in R&B and pop, has been telegraphing her version of country music and style. There was the “disco” cowboy hat at her Renaissance World Tour last year, and her “ western ” look at the Grammys in February, complete with a white Stetson and black studded jacket. Then, on the night of the Super Bowl, she released two new songs, and sent one of them, “Texas Hold ’Em” — with plucked banjos and lines about Texas and hoedowns — to country radio stations, sparking an industrywide debate about the defensive moat that has long surrounded Nashville’s musical institutions.

At midnight on Friday, Beyoncé finally released her new album, “Cowboy Carter,” and the country bona fides were certainly there. Dolly Parton provides a cameo introduction to Beyoncé’s version of “Jolene,” Parton’s 1972 classic about a woman confronting a romantic rival. Willie Nelson pops in twice as a grizzled D.J., who says he “turns you on to some real good [expletive],” including snippets of Chuck Berry, Sister Rosetta Tharpe and the blues singer Son House.

Yet “Cowboy Carter” is far broader than simply a country album. Beyoncé does a version of the Beatles’ “Blackbird” and, on the track “Ya Ya,” draws from Nancy Sinatra and the Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations.” “Desert Eagle” is glistening funk, and the upbeat “Bodyguard” would not be out of place on a modern rock radio station. The album’s range suggests a broad essay on contemporary pop music, and on the nature of genre itself.

That theory is made clear on the partly spoken track “Spaghettii,” featuring the pioneering but long absent Black country singer Linda Martell , who in 1970 released an album called “Color Me Country.”

“Genres are a funny little concept, aren’t they? Yes, they are,” Martell, 82, says. “In theory, they have a simple definition that’s easy to understand. But in practice, well, some may feel confined.”

Of course, Beyoncé herself indicated this a week ago when she posted a note on Instagram saying: “This ain’t a country album. This is a ‘Beyoncé’ album.”

Still, the theme of simultaneously celebrating and transforming country music extends to the album’s cover art, featuring Beyoncé seated sideways on a white horse, dressed in red-white-and-blue rodeo gear and hoisting an American flag.

Guests on the album include Miley Cyrus on the song “II Most Wanted,” and Post Malone on “Levii’s Jeans.” (The extra I’s underscore that “Cowboy Carter” is officially “Act II” of what Beyoncé has said will be a three-album cycle, which began with “Renaissance” in 2022. That motif repeats throughout the album’s 27-song track list. The Beatles cover — where she is joined by a quartet of young Black female country singers — Tanner Adell, Brittney Spencer, Reyna Roberts and Tiera Kennedy — is rendered as “Blackbiird.”) Midway through the track “Daughter,” Beyoncé even flexes some opera skills, singing a bit of “Caro Mio Ben,” a popular 18th-century Italian aria. ( More on that here .)

In a statement, Beyoncé described the sonic texture of the album, differentiating it from the synthesized process behind most contemporary pop albums (including her own).

“With artificial intelligence and digital filters and programming, I wanted to go back to real instruments, and I used very old ones,” she said. “I didn’t want some layers of instruments like strings, especially guitars, and organs perfectly in tune. I kept some songs raw and leaned into folk.”

As with “Renaissance,” the audio for “Cowboy Carter” was leaked online shortly before its planned release, with some fans urging others not to listen early.

Back when Beyoncé released her self-titled “visual album” without warning in 2013, establishing the “surprise drop” as an industry trope, it was partly meant to protect the album from leaks, which had become a threat to first-week sales numbers. For these last two albums, Beyoncé has embraced a more conventional marketing plan, announcing her album weeks ahead of time and preparing deluxe physical editions. (There are many for “Cowboy Carter,” including LPs in, yes, red, white and blue vinyl.)

In the end, the leaks meant little to “Renaissance,” which went straight to No. 1 . And, regardless of the new album’s fate at country radio — where “Texas Hold ’Em” has so far made it only as high as No. 33 — the commercial potential for “Cowboy Carter” seems vast, given Beyoncé’s recent success.

Last year, she won her 32nd Grammy Award , more than any artist in history. Her Renaissance tour sold $580 million in tickets, second only to Taylor Swift. A related concert film, “Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé,” offered a rare look behind the scenes of her creative process and was a hit in cinemas.

Last week, as the release of “Cowboy Carter” neared, Beyoncé wrote on Instagram that the album was “over five years in the making,” and that “it was born out of an experience that I had years ago where I did not feel welcomed … and it was very clear that I wasn’t.” Fans zeroed in on her appearance at the Country Music Association Awards in 2016, where she performed her song “Daddy Lessons” with the Chicks, and drew backlash online .

“The criticisms I faced when I first entered this genre forced me to propel past the limitations that were put on me,” Beyoncé said. The new album, she added, “is a result of challenging myself, and taking my time to bend and blend genres together to create this body of work.”

An earlier version of this article misstated the name of an earlier Beyoncé song. It is “Daddy Lessons,” not “Daddy Issues.”
