Cruises to Ireland and Scotland

Fascinating history and pastoral landscapes await.

On a cruise to Ireland and Scotland, take in the wonderfully contrasting scenery, from Ireland’s lush, rolling countryside to Scotland’s much starker beauty, where mountains slope down to serene lochs, inlets from the sea carved by ancient glaciers.

This corner of Europe is packed with culture and history, both ancient and more recent. In Scotland, you’ll come across grand, turreted castles and atmospheric ruins, as well as cosmopolitan cities including Glasgow and Edinburgh, each with world-class art galleries. In Ireland, you’ll find history shaped by everything from the Vikings to the golden age of shipbuilding. Don’t forget those famously cozy pubs—the perfect setting for sampling a pint of Guinness.

Itineraries

Featured ports of call, belfast, ireland.

Dynamic Belfast, once famed as a community divided by “The Troubles”, has reinvented itself as a thriving, modern city with a bustling waterfront, grand Victorian and Edwardian architecture, and a lively pub scene. Take a city tour to see the vivid street art on the Peace Wall, and explore the superb Titanic Belfast to learn about the ill-fated liner. Or head to the Giant’s Causeway, an expanse of 40,000 basalt columns on the wild Atlantic coast, created by an ancient volcanic eruption.

Glasgow, Scotland

As well as being a center of imposing Victorian architecture, the buzzing university city of Glasgow is rich in culture, from the priceless art of Kelvingrove to the archaeological treasures of the Burrell Collection. Edinburgh is just over an hour away, and you’re also close to serene Loch Lomond and the forested mountains of the Trossachs National Park. The shopping in Glasgow is superb, whether you’re in the market for tartan, Scottish whisky and craft gin, or your own set of bagpipes.

Cork (Cobh), Ireland

Immerse yourself in the medieval history and Gothic architecture of enchanting Cork. Visit romantic Blarney Castle, a 15th-century fortress with beautiful gardens, and kiss the legendary Blarney Stone to be granted the “gift of the gab”. Sample the famed Jameson Irish Whiskey, shop for exquisite Waterford Crystal, and get a taste of life in Victorian times on a tour of the imposing Muckross House, located deep in the verdant countryside.

Dublin or Cork, an Irish adventure

Gauge Dublin's pulse - Ireland

Gauge Dublin's pulse - Ireland

Dublin has plenty of charm on both sides of the Liffey. There are lots of historic landmarks to visit: while you can see the Custom House and Bank of Ireland from the outside, you should definitely venture into Trinity College . This, Dublin's oldest university, is home to the Book of Kells : a 1,200-year old manuscript and a real illumination masterpiece among thousands of works. Christ Church Cathedral, Saint Patrick's Cathedral and Dublin Castle are also unmissable. But, to appreciate the whole package offered by the Irish capital, you need to gauge its pulse. There's no better way to do this than walking along pedestrianised Grafton Street , or through the Temple Bar district, with its many pubs, restaurants and shops.

Treat yourself to a getaway in Edinburgh - Scotland

Treat yourself to a getaway in Edinburgh - Scotland

Perched in a fabulous location high on Castle Rock, Edinburgh Castle is a Scottish icon. This fortress which has dominated the city since the 12th century has long been used as a royal residence and for military purposes. The castle offers fantastic views of the surrounding area as well as the chance to immerse yourself in Scotland's eventful history as you view the different architectural styles of the buildings and the Scottish crown jewels in one particular room. Edinburgh is also a vibrant city. To see this for yourself, go to its most famous street: the Royal Mile .

Spend a day in Cork - Ireland

Spend a day in Cork - Ireland

Cork in the south of Ireland is one of those lively cities worth exploring on foot due to its manageable size. It would be impossible to visit Cork without stopping off at the Neo-Gothic Saint Fin Barre's Cathedral or the Church of St Anne (in the Shandon area) which is famous for its bells, which entered Irish popular culture via a 19th-century song: The Bells of Shandon . Foodies will enjoy a trip to the English Market : one of the city's main attractions. For over 200 years, the market has been showcasing the best regional produce, including specialities like drisheen (a kind of black pudding) and pig's trotters. Its 55 food stalls are packed with food products: each more mouth-watering than the last.

Follow in the footsteps of the Beatles in Liverpool - England

Follow in the footsteps of the Beatles in Liverpool - England

It was Liverpool that sealed the Beatles ' fate. Penny Lane, St Peter's Woolton, the university School of the Arts, the Casbah Coffee Club, the Empire Theatre, Arnold Grove, Dovedale School, Quarry Bank School... Retrace the steps of the "Fab Four" during a coach tour that takes in some of the places that contributed to the legend and played a role in their story.

Walk on the Giant's Causeway - Northern Ireland

Walk on the Giant's Causeway - Northern Ireland

Legend has it that the Giant's Causeway was the result of a quarrel between two giants: one Scottish and the other Irish. Mocked by the former, the latter threw rocks into the sea to encourage him to come over and fight. Seeing the strapping Scotsman arrive, the Irishman was frightened and disguised himself as a baby. Noticing how brawny the baby was, the "invader" could only imagine what its father might look like, so fled, destroying the pathway between the two countries as he went. Despite this, 40,000 vertical and hexagonal stone columns can still be seen today. In truth, they are cooled lava prisms from a basaltic lava flow 40 million years ago which have been eroded by the sea.

Explore London on a panoramic tour - England

Explore London on a panoramic tour - England

There's nothing better than a panoramic tour if you want to see the English capital's most iconic landmarks . In just a few hours, you can visit Buckingham Palace (the queen's home), Trafalgar Square, the 135-metre big wheel known as the London Eye , the Palace of Westminster, Big Ben and Westminster Abbey (where British royalty is crowned and buried).

Take a breath of fresh air in Connemara - Ireland

Take a breath of fresh air in Connemara - Ireland

Narrow roads that wind between lakes and lands that are green or red depending on the season, and breathtaking endless views. The Connemara region has many legends, always amazes and leaves visitors speechless. Start your trip with a cruise on Lough Corrib with its 365 islands. Exploring Galway, Ireland's most vibrant city, is also a must. Its bohemian and artistic vibes, the flower-covered pubs, the music that emanates from within, the remains of ramparts in the medieval area and the various boutiques all contribute to its charm.

Get away from it all on the Isles of Scilly - United Kingdom

Get away from it all on the Isles of Scilly - United Kingdom

Who would have thought that these dots of land surrounded by turquoise waters would be in the middle of the Celtic Sea? The Isles of Scilly enjoy a microclimate due to the Gulf Stream. Thanks to the latter, a real Garden of Eden has been planted and grown up over the past 170 years on Tresco . Tresco Abbey Garden contains plants from Australia, New Zealand, Africa, South America and the Mediterranean, as well as native species. This exotic flora is simply incredible.

Enjoy the majesty of nature on the Isle of Skye - Scotland

Enjoy the majesty of nature on the Isle of Skye - Scotland

It's impossible not to be moved by the wild beauty on the Isle of Skye . A few pastures sit alongside uncultivated plains. The heathland extends as far as the eye can see, criss-crossed by rivers and waterfalls. Steep cliffs plunge down into turbulent waters and jagged landforms soften out into gentle slopes until they reach deserted pebble beaches or sea lochs. And then sometimes, a shadow looms proud despite the age of its stones, and reminds us that we are in the Highlands . Dunvegan Castle owned by the MacLeod clan is in no way a ruin. A tour is a good idea if you want a moving experience being immersed in Scotland's past.

Go on a magical adventure, Hebrides Islands - Scotland

Go on a magical adventure, Hebrides Islands - Scotland

Stone houses with thatched roofs, white-sand beaches bordered by cropped green vegetation, small ports, peaceful locks and sheep farming... The Hebrides Islands paint the perfect Scottish landscape. See the magic for yourself on Lewis with a visit to one of the most impressive prehistoric sites: the Callanish Stones . This is the second most important site in Great Britain after Stonehenge and dates back to 3000 BC. During the Neolithic, the stone's arrangement vis-à-vis the moon and stars allowed farmers to track the seasons.

Dos. Anyone who wants to make a good impression in Great Britain and Ireland should abide by a few basic principles: always be polite, don't queue-jump, arrive on time and pay for your round at the pub.

Don'ts. In Scotland, it's not the done thing to add soda to your whisky. Instead, use still water to reveal the power of each flavour.

Unique features

Kept at Trinity College Dublin in Ireland, the Book of Kells enthrals lovers of Celtic art and illuminations. Its cover, which was supposedly brimming with gold and precious stones, was torn off when the work was stolen in 1007 and has never been found. The variety of details and colours in the drawings is impressive. In 800, when the book (which brings together the four gospels) was written, only four colours were normally used. However, the Book of Kells contains many more that were made using pigments from materials shipped in from all over Europe and the Middle East. The most expensive, lapis lazuli, was used for blue and came from Afghanistan.

Fish and chips is known and enjoyed in England, Ireland and Scotland. These sizeable fillets of fried cod are given a lift by lemon zest and accompanied by chips. And the dish's secret? The Irish add stout to the batter.

Myths & legends

More than a symbol, clover (especially four-leaf clover) is seen by the Irish as a lucky charm. For the druids, it had real power against evil spirits. The believed that the first leaf represented hope, the second, faith, the third, love and the fourth, luck. You have to find a four-leaf clover by chance at full moon for the magic to work.

Books. Although mainly known for Treasure Island, good Scotsman Robert Louis Stevenson actually wrote a touching body of work including several travel narratives about his native soil. Walking through Edinburgh, a ramble on the Isle of Mull, exploring the Fife Coast, memories of the Pentland Hills... The French-language À travers l’Écosse , which contains translations of some of Stevenson's English travel writing, provides a nice starting point and nostalgic portrait of the region in the 19th century.

Music. The harp features on Irish coats of arms for a good reason: it represents one of the first instruments played by ninth-century Gaelic clans. Gradually dance music also emerged and was played especially in pubs. This rhythmic repertoire of 6,000 melodies is performed on various instruments: the bodhrán (a traditional drum), the bagpipes, the fiddle (a version of the violin) and the Irish bouzouki (a kind of large mandolin).

Film. Awarded two Palmes d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2006 for T he Wind That Shakes the Barley , and in 2016 for I, Daniel Blake , Ken Loach is undoubtedly the most-loved British director, as well as the most divisive in his country. The positions he takes and his way of depicting UK society, social deprivation and the dark hours in the country's history raise some people's hackles, while others applaud his efforts. His work always contains nicely British humour, with feature films that are touchingly accurate and moving characters with which the director surprises and stirs his public each and every time.

Facts and figures

Big Ben is definitely one of London's most iconic monuments. This nickname refers to its large bell which comes in at an impressive 13.7 tonnes, 2.2 metres high and 2.7 metres in diameter . The striking hammer weighs 200 kilos .

The Bow Lounge provides the closest access to water level making it the perfect spot for guests to spend some time watching for marine life.

Located on Deck 6, at the forward-most part of the vessel, the Bow Lounge provides the closest access to water level via the foredeck, making it the perfect spot for guests to spend some time watching for marine life. Within a few steps, guests can be outside, with a vantage point that is ideal to watch the ship’s course, spot wildlife, or take in the beautiful natural scenery.

The Bow Lounge introduces some technological enhancements, providing guests with a first for Seabourn with touch screens showing the ship’s plotted location, as well as navigational charts and scientific information used to help guide the ship on its journey. Large screens project live footage from mounted cameras outside the ship, and from a drone when conditions permit, while the touch screen monitors invite guests to explore on their own with a live map, weather information, and notes detailing upcoming expeditions. Expedition Team members will be available within the Lounge throughout the day to interact with guests, answer questions, provide interpretation and aid in spotting wildlife.

The space provides direct access to the Bow Sprit on Deck 6 forward (when conditions permit) to give guests the sensation of standing in front of the ship and views of waves parting and ice sloughing off the bow at the waterline.

In addition, the expedition team will be in the lounge regularly to help identify points of interest, wildlife and geological wonders. Imagine glimpsing killer whales, waddling penguins, and sea lions in Antarctica; sleepy-eyed sloths, sprightly monkeys, and colorful parrots in the rainforests of South and Central America; and icebergs bobbing in the seas and waterfalls rushing over cliffs in the far reaches of the Arctic and Northern Europe – all from the comfort of the Constellation Lounge.

Ireland, Moher in County Clare Cliffs

FROM THE CASTLES TO THE CLIFFS

Ireland cruises.

From rugged cliffs to rowdy pubs and rolling countryside, Ireland has something for everyone.

Known as the Emerald Isle, Ireland is characterized by its rolling green hills and lush countryside, dotted with friendly country towns, dry stone walls and crumbling castles. Cruise to Ireland to visit the Cliffs of Moher, a UNESCO Global Geopark, about a two-hour drive from Cork, to see where the bright blue waters meet towering sea cliffs, or head to Cork's Blarney Castle to be granted the gift of gab by kissing the famous Blarney Stone. To step back in time, see Dublin's Malahide Castle, dating back to the 12th century. Don't leave without enjoying a pint of Guinness and listening to traditional Irish music at a local pub on Dublin's Fleet Street or Grafton Street.

Ireland, Dublin Bailey LightHouse

CLING TO THE CLIFFS

Over one million people visit the Cliffs of Moher annually, and you could be one of them — they're about a two-hour drive away from  Cork . Witness the majesty of Ireland's top natural attraction, which stretches for five miles and rises up to 214 meters. Be prepared, though: The Atlantic sea breeze at the Cliffs of Moher can literally blow you away.

Ireland, Blarney House at Castle Gardens

ENJOY THE KNIGHT LIFE

Get the gift of gab at Cork's famous Blarney Castle, where you'll find the Blarney Stone, which legend says will bestow on you the gift of eloquence (but only if you can bend over backwards to kiss it). Or explore the 12th-century Romanesque architecture of the Rock of Cashel, Ireland's most-visited heritage site, about an hour's drive from  Waterford .

Ireland, Dublin Herd of Deers

To connect with nature in the middle of the city center, head to St. Stephen's Green in Dublin, where you can find an ornamental lake and several walking paths. If you're looking for an animal adventure during your Ireland vacation, visit Phoenix Park, one of the largest enclosed recreational spaces in any European capital city and home to the Dublin Zoo and roaming deer.

Northern Ireland, Cave Hill Country Park

HIT THE HILLS

Just outside the city center, the  Belfast Hills  offer stunning views of Northern Ireland's expressive capital city and the surrounding bay. The Castle Trail up Cave Hill will take you to these sights in an easygoing 30-minute hike.

Ireland, Bank of River

CITY SLICKER

Whether you enjoy art galleries, museums, shopping or bar hopping, you'll never run out of things to do in Ireland's urban centers. Learn about Irish history in  Dublin  and  Belfast , or experience colorful and quaint Cork.

Ireland, Kinsale Colorful Market

FOLLOW THE RAINBOW

A cruise to Ireland brings you to some of the world's most charming and colorful towns. In Cork, pastel-colored homes line the waterfront, and nearby Kinsale's downtown area is home to streets with brightly colored shops in purple, green and virtually every other hue imaginable selling books, art, crafts and local trinkets.

Ireland, Dublin Irish Black Beer

POUR A PINT

Incredibly, there are over 750 pubs in  Dublin  and its surrounding area, so you never have to wander far for a drink. Temple Bar is the most popular area in town for a pint, but the best place to grab a Guinness is the Guinness Storehouse. Learn how the beer is made before pouring your own perfect pint.

Ireland, Dublin Malahide Castle

DUBLIN DAY TRIPPIN'

Although you can cross the coast to the Cliffs of Moher within a day, there are other doable day trips closer to Dublin, too. Wicklow is nicknamed the Garden of Ireland and is home to Wicklow Mountains National Park. Step into the past at the seaside town of Howth and Malahide Castle, which has parts remaining from the 12th century.

Ireland, Dublin Trinity College Library

FEEL THE LUCK OF THE IRISH ON THIS ISLAND ADVENTURE

Explore Dublin, with its cobblestone streets, nightlife, museums and green spaces. Then head into to the Irish countryside, dominated by colorful villages, greenery as far as the eye can see and breathtakingly rugged landscapes. And don't miss out on popular attractions such as "Game of Thrones" sightseeing and Titanic history in Belfast.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Irish You Were Here

There's a lot to see and do in Ireland with your cruise. Here are some helpful hints for getting around the Emerald Isle.

Ireland is so lush because it frequently rains. The country's weather is unpredictable year-round, so always pack a waterproof jacket, comfortable waterproof shoes and an umbrella just in case.

You can visit Ireland anytime of the year, but summer is the busiest season. Visiting in the shoulder vacation seasons of spring and autumn will let you avoid large crowds.

Many attractions and things to do are closed on Sundays, so try to plan for museum visits and castle-hopping on Monday through Saturday.

If you're planning to drive around on a day trip, remember that Irish road signs are in kilometers — 10 km is just over 6 miles, so things may be a little closer than you think.

If your day trip will involve train travel instead, book your Irish Rail tickets in advance to receive discounts and guaranteed travel.

Tipping isn't customary in Ireland, but take a look at your bill because some restaurants will add a 10 percent service charge to the bill.

CUISINE STIR THE POT

Irish food is synonymous with comfort. Whether it's a hearty Irish stew or traditional bacon and cabbage, Ireland's cuisine is all about stick-to-your ribs satisfaction — all served with an equally comforting pint of Guinness, of course.

Irish Beef Stew with Carrots and Potatoes

Irish stews come in many forms, but the three key ingredients are lamb, potatoes and onion. Carrots often make an appearance in the dish's rich broth, and the addition of thyme complements the gamey flavors of the lamb. You'll find traditional Irish stew on most pub menus.

Irish Cabbage and Bacon Dish

BACON ME HUNGRY

Bacon and cabbage is a simple but beloved Irish dish. It includes sliced back bacon — which is thick-cut and steak-like rather than thin and crispy — boiled with traditional cabbage and potatoes. It's often prepared with spicy mustard seeds and fresh parsley or another herb sauce to balance out the hearty flavors.

Irish Cockles Reserve Cans

CRACK OPEN COCKLES

Made famous in the Irish tune "Molly Malone," cockles are small saltwater clams found along the Irish coastline, and they've become a local delicacy. They're usually served boiled alongside mussels, or in a chowder-like soup with a creamy, buttery broth.

Related Ports

Visit the Blarney Castle in Cork to kiss the Blarney stone, or pop into the Temple Bar neighborhood in Dublin for a pint of Guinness, or make your way to Ireland’s oldest city, Waterford, to see where the famous Waterford Crystals originated.
