Why Cruise the Mediterranean
World-Class Dining
Captivating cuisine.
With mouthwatering entrees and confections, the Mediterranean invites you to embark on a gourmet tour through iconic cities. Reawaken your taste buds with Italian classics like pastas, pizzas and gelato. Or fill your plate with gyros, keftethes and baklava on a Greek cruise. From breakfast to dinner and every delectable dessert in between, the best is before you with Princess.
Bold Reds and Crisp Whites
The countryside of Italy and Greece are home to some of the most flavorful wines around the globe. With sun and warm temperatures year-round, vineyards are flourishing with grapes by the harvest season. Sip on Italy’s red wines, or sample Greece’s white blends. From sweet Lambruscos to earthy Bordeauxs, fill up your glass on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess.
Ancient Ruins
Where history comes to life.
From towers and temples to cities and shorelines, the Mediterranean is sprinkled with remains of civilizations past. Step back in time on a tour through ancient ruins on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess. Imagine life as a gladiator at the Colosseum, explore Greek mythology at the Parthenon and discover the archeological excavations of Pompeii — a lost city and UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Art Galleries & Museums
Artistic ingenuity abounds.
From the treasures on land to the jewels within museums, the Mediterranean is a true work of art. On an Italian cruise, see portraits from the Renaissance period at the Uffizi Museum in Florence, and admire Michelangelo’s masterpieces at the Vatican Museum in Rome. Or walk in the footsteps of celebrated artists that called these regions home — like Picasso and Dali — and allow their work to spark your creativity.
Sun-Kissed Beaches
A vision of natural beauty.
Visions of sparkling coasts and crystalline waters welcome you to the Mediterranean. Dip your toes on the black-sand coast of Santorini on a Greek cruise. Head to Salerno to spend the day in Positano relaxing on the white beaches and admiring the pastel houses that decorate the cliffs around you. Or travel to Mykonos with your loved ones and daydream on the city’s long stretch of golden sand and stroll in the sunshine.
Mediterranean Excursions
Our award-winning Mediterranean cruise shore excursions bring you to iconic beaches, landmarks and ancient artifacts. See the yacht-lined shores of Kotor while riding on a tuk tuk, an electric rickshaw. Savor the flavors of “Koum Kouat” liqueur, created from Corfu’s exclusive citrus plant. Or stroll along the streets of Dubrovnik’s Old town, one of the most well-preserved medieval cities in the world.

Thira’s the capital of the island of Santorini, and the town features a landscape of beautiful whitewashed Cycladic buildings, many iconically topped with blue domes — and all built right into the side of plunging cliffs. Such drama! Such beauty! And with views such as these, it might be hard to believe that there’s more to Santorini than its incredible photo ops. But explore deeper, because the island is packing more serious stuff, such as a winery with some of the world’s oldest vineyards, beaches decked out with spectacular black sand and even a pair of offshore islands crafted long ago by volcanic eruptions. Did we mention that back in the ’60s, archaeologists uncovered remains of a Bronze Age city that some people believe could have been Atlantis? Honestly, who knows — but really, why wouldn’t Atlanteans want to live in beautiful Santorini?

2024 Cruises from Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy
It's no secret that Rome is home to some of the most historically significant and beautiful sights in Europe. What you may not know is that you can visit Rome and many of the exciting destinations surrounding it when you book a cruise with Norwegian Cruise Line out of our Rome (Civitavecchia) port of call . We have several itineraries to choose from, each with perks such as unique excursions and breathtaking views.
You have plenty to consider when booking a cruise, such as destinations or ports, itineraries, cabins, and excursions. To give you an idea of which cruise is best for you, here are some details about what you can explore on a Norwegian cruise from Rome in 2024 .
Ready to start planning? Explore all Rome cruises .
Step Into Scenes from History
If a cruise vacation that allows you to delve into human history interests you, Norwegian has plenty of options. Many of our cruises leave from the port of Rome (Civitavecchia) , one of the richest areas in terms of historical artifacts and buildings in Italy. Experience walking streets in the footsteps of ancient Romans. Explore legendary museum relics and visit globally famous historical monuments.
Another Italian port that's filled with historical significance is Florence/Pisa (Livorno) , a stop for many Norwegian cruises. Here, you can visit Michelangelo's renowned statue of David and explore the Piazza del Duomo and Santa Croce.
At the port of Cannes (France) , you'll arrive at the home of the Cannes Film Festival. This annual event attracts many fashionable celebrities and movie personalities. Take a walking tour through historic Monaco, treat yourself to luxury in Monte Carlo, and shop some of the most iconic fashion outlets on the French Riviera.
Revel in the Beauty of Nature
With a history reaching back to 295 A.D. and a breathtaking skyline where the mountains kiss the Adriatic sea, Split (Croatia) is the perfect destination to experience some of nature's most incredible sights. Split sits right on the Adriatic Sea, and its many harbors and coastline hubs offer chances to grab a bite to eat or just relax and breathe in the fresh sea air. As you look up, you'll view impressive mountains towering over the city, covered with forests and hidden waterfalls.
For some of the best seafood you'll ever taste, visit the restaurants or cafes in Split. Smoked ham and local cheese also await you in this coastal town.
A vision of crystal blue waters and soft, sandy beaches, the port of Corfu, Greece , is a favorite among Norwegian cruisers. In this idyllic island town, you'll have tranquil views of greenery and mountains, peppered along the coast with beaches where you can suntan, swim, and pursue other watersports. You'll rarely feel closer to nature than while you're exploring one of Corfu's tucked-away coves, brimming with plants and wildlife that you certainly won't see back home.

Feast on Delectable Local Cuisine
Once awarded the title of the European Capital of Street Food, Messina (Sicily), Italy , is the ideal port of call for foodies cruising the Mediterranean. Packed with restaurants and cafes, this city offers countless chances to enjoy a gourmet meal or grab a quick bite on the go from a local street vendor. You might also try the local Marsala wine and unwind while you reminisce on your travels.
Apart from its iconic canals and expansive St. Mark's Square, the port of Venice (Trieste), Italy , is the perfect place to sample Italian cuisine and desserts. Discover authentic pizza shops, picturesque cafes, and colorful markets where you'll find local favorite street food. Don't forget to stop by one of the city's gelato windows for a scoop of delicious ice cream.
Dance and Shop Until You Drop
If vibrant nightlife and luxury shopping are on your list of must-dos while cruising, you'll love the ports of call we visit in Spain on our cruises leaving from Rome. When you're not taking in all the beautiful wildlife and coastal views of Ibiza , you can enjoy some of the city's colorful nightlife culture. Dance the night away with friends at one of the city's many clubs, but don't miss your call time at the port the next day.
There are also plenty of places to party in the port of Palma (Majorca) , with options for nightlife, wine tasting, and more. If you enjoy art, you can visit galleries and perhaps purchase an original piece from a local artist. At the city's many boutiques, you can browse souvenirs that capture the Spanish flair of Palma you'll be sure to love.
These are just some of the ways you can enjoy yourself when you book a cruise vacation from Rome with Norwegian. When you cruise with us, you'll have a vacation to remember, with exclusive access to memorable excursions, private tours, and delectable meals. If you're cruising to Europe in 2024, book with Norwegian and treat yourself to all the luxuries that await on our ships and itineraries.

Why This Is The Cheapest And Easiest Way To Visit Europe's Top Destinations This Summer

One style of travel is trending majorly in Europe this summer, and that is cruising.
It's actually cheaper and easier to explore Europe's top destinations like Italy, Greece, and Croatia by cruise this summer.
Cruising in the Mediterranean is up 23% this summer compared to 2019 according to the latest State of the Cruise Industry Report.
Here's why more and more travelers are choosing cruises to explore Mediterranean Europe this summer:
Cheaper Prices
The biggest reason you should take a Mediterranean cruise this summer?
It can be significantly cheaper than staying in hotels and traveling between destinations on your own!
For example, this July I'm taking a cruise on Celebrity Cruises that starts and ends in Athens, Greece, and visits multiple islands in Greece and Turkey, including the hotspots of Mykonos and Santorini.
The total cost for this 7-day cruise is $1,700 , or about $243 per night. Here's what that includes:
- A stateroom with a private balcony (shared with my friend who is paying the same price)
- Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks on the cruise ship every day
- Premium package including additional beverages and free WiFi
- Transportation to all of the islands we are visiting over the course of a week
- A $150 onboard credit which I plan to use towards paying for staff gratuities
Keep in mind that this is the cost for a balcony stateroom and a premium package - you could get an even lower price if you book an interior stateroom and skip all the extras.
Now compare that to the cost of a hotel in Athens, Santorini, or Mykonos - a basic hotel can run you $250 per night while a luxury hotel is easily $500 per night or more.
That's just accommodation alone - you also have to factor in meals, transportation (ferries and flights between islands in Greece can run $100+ each way), and activities.
In the end, taking a cruise is less expensive than visiting multiple destinations in Europe independently.
Easier To Visit Multiple Destinations
Not only is it cheaper, but it's also easier to visit more places on a cruise. You can island-hop your way around the Mediterranean in a way that would be difficult to organize on your own.
My cruise goes to the Greek islands plus a couple of stops in Turkey. It would be extremely expensive to visit all these islands independently and you'd have to organize multiple ferries or flights.
Similarly, there are cruises that take you all the way down the coast of Croatia, Montenegro, and Greece, hitting up multiple exciting destinations in just a week.
Other cruises visit destinations in Italy like Portofino, the Amalfi Coast, Sicily, and Sardinia, or head over to the French Riviera and the Balearic islands of Mallorca, Menorca, and Ibiza in Spain.
Less Hassle
One of the best reasons to take a Mediterranean cruise is that it's simply less hassle!
Cruises are becoming increasingly popular because they provide a stress-free vacation.
You only have to unpack your things once and you're sleeping in the same bed each night rather than having to move hotels every couple of nights as you move destinations.
You don't have to worry about transportation logistics and organizing trains, ferries, flights, or rental cars.
All your meals are taken care of, too, and you can even book shore excursions through your cruise line (or opt to explore the ports independently if you want to save money, which is what I do!)
Off Season Offerings
Let's talk about the elephant in the room - summer is a busy and crowded time to travel in Europe's top destinations like Italy, Greece, and Croatia.
Cruises can be even worse because if you have multiple cruise ships carrying thousands of passengers in port at the same destination on the same day, it can be insanely crowded.
The months of June, July, and August are the most crowded in the Mediterranean.
However, most cruise lines are now extending their Mediterranean cruises into what used to be the off-season.
You can find Mediterranean cruises in May, September, October, and even November.
The fall off season is becoming a more popular time to travel because it's less crowded and less expensive. If you have the option to take a cruise during this time instead of the summer, I highly recommend it!

Mile building Summer 2024 Adventure Cruise from Greece to Tunisia
Hello, I'm Rob. This season I plan to casually coastal cruise from Greece (Preveza, Corfu) to Italy, Sicily, Malta, Gozo, then arrive in Yasmine Port Marina in Tunisia early to early October 2024. Departing mid July 14th +/-, the itinerary is not fixed in tablets of stone, is flexible to optimise life's riches, antiquities, festivals', culture, food, art, music, swimming, snorkelling, diving. This is a luxury leisurely adventure, moving from anchorages/ports at relaxed pace to visit places we have never been to before, weather conditions can present physical challenges but the learning, fun, laughter and companionship are the rewards.
Subject to weather I ordinarily plan day sails with occasional night passages depending on distance to next intended port. Where possible we utilise anchorages. We can negotiate when & where to eat/drink ashore. At times it may be prudent to berth overnight or for a couple of days in a port/marina. Berthing fees are shared amongst the number of people onboard. We could hire a car or motorbike to visit local places of interest, I'm happy to include crew wishes.
Cost contribution 30 euros per person per day plus when onboard Arcas, we will agree & share duties for example cleaning activities, meal plans/preparation, shopping & all costs split equitably (excluding cost of alcohol which is only consumed once Arcas is safely at anchorage/berth). As Skipper & owner I cover the costs for vessel maintenance and fuel. I'm looking to attract 2 to 3 individuals with or without sailing experience to join S/Y Arcas for periods of 14 days or more. I’m happy for crew to be onboard for a calendar month +/- a week, 4 to 5 weeks or more. Crew can embark & disembark flexibly along route according to personal time constraints. Crew will take responsibility for your own travel arrangements, connections and ashore accommodation as necessary.
Ideally crew should love the outdoors, the wind on your cheeks, warm sunshine, travel, nature, freedom, wine and song. Team players willing to clean & tidy, be diligent easy-going, fit & healthy, polite & friendly, organised, respectful, trust worthy, confident swimmer, rarely/unlikely seasick, good communicator, positive life outlook with a sense of humour, enjoy cooking, doesn't mind cleaning, maybe skilled & good with maintenance. Crew members must be co-operative and tolerant to others in order to sail the vessel safely according to the itinerary. For those that wish to learn I'm willing to share my knowledge and experience. Possibly maybe crew could teach me languages for fun, basic Italian, French and/or how to play the acoustic guitar?
All the above is shared in advance to optimise our joint enjoyment of the experience and allowing us to go with the flow with necessary preparation and due diligence. Any questions or matters I may over looked? Let me know

ISLAND EXPLORER
Get in touch with traditional customs and soak in the Mediterranean waves on the sun-soaked Greek Isles onboard the best Greece and Greek Isles cruises.
VIVA LA VILLAGE LIFE
Santorini only has villages, not towns, and these diverse areas provide a firsthand glimpse into Greek life. Because the whole island is less than 28 square miles, it's not difficult to take in most of the sights from the looming cliffs and still have time for shopping, eating and some down time on the Aegean Sea.
DIVE TO THE DEPTHS
Greece's underwater worlds complete with seahorses, eels and plenty of fish are almost too perfect not to grab your scuba gear and take the plunge. Santorini has an excellent dive center that will get you into the water fast with instructors who will guide you through the warm Mediterranean waters.
THE THRILL OF THE CLIMB
Another great thing to do while in Greece are the daily tours of the volcano Nea Kameni, which is located on an uninhabited island close to Santorini, begin with a short boat ride, followed by a climb up to the volcanic craters that takes just over an hour. The tour then takes in hot springs and mud baths, where you can recharge your batteries.
UNEARTH THE PAST
Go on an archaeological exploration of the ancient world's most renowned sites, from Bronze Age excavations to temples dedicated to the Greek gods with your cruise to Greece and Greek Isles.
ANCIENT ADVENTURES
The largest of the Greek islands, Crete is both a beach paradise and home to some of the country's premier archaeological finds and attractions. Visit Greece and tour the Palace at Knossos, built by the Minoans more than 4,000 years ago, before exploring the Archaeological Museum, where the treasures of Knossos — including sculptures, jewelry and mosaics — are exhibited.
Excavations of Akrotiri on Santorini Island date back to the Manoan Bronze Age, where the settlement was preserved in ash following a volcanic eruption in 1627 B.C. The site is still being excavated today, and you can witness history firsthand by exploring the vast settlement and the enormous ongoing archaeological dig.
GUIDED BY GODS
Delos is one of the most important archaeological sites in the world, and it's also the mythological birthplace of the sun god, Apollo, and his twin, Artemis, goddess of the moon and the hunt. You can spend hours exploring the ruins and learning about Greek history on the most sacred place of worship in Ancient Greece. Even the nearby old port has its own charm, with an amphitheater, sanctuary and various dwellings waiting to be explored.

Offering longer stays in port, Odyssey of the Seas℠ takes you deeper into the culture, history and natural beauty of some of Europe’s most incredible destinations. WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Greece and Greek Isles Cruises Insider
You'll find excellent weather on the Greek islands throughout the year, but the best time to visit is between April and October, when temperatures range from the low 70s to the mid 80s, and the sun is nearly guaranteed.
Countless ruins like the Acropolis and the Akrotiri overlook the world-class beaches that are around nearly every corner on the islands. Whether you're more interested in a private cove on Zakynthos or a central beach with a party scene on Mykonos, the options are limitless.
While you will have no difficulty finding a wealth of fish and seafood on the islands, the history of trade on the islands create amazing international cuisine.

CUISINE EVERYTHING'S BETTA WITH A LITTLE FETA
The Greek islands are known for famous foods like feta cheese, but the location is also home to a slew of other delicacies. Olive oil plays a big part in the local cuisine, as does local produce such as tomatoes and other Mediterranean vegetables. Feast on feta me meli, baked feta wrapped in filo, or choriatiki, greek salad with tons of vegetables. While meat such as lamb, pork and veal are found everywhere, especially in gyros or keftethes (meatballs), fish and seafood are the undisputed stars, due to proximity to the sea.
SAY CHEESE!
Kefalonia is home to the legendary tiropita cheese puff, which is basically cheese baked in cheese, although you'll also find puffs filled with vegetables, particularly spinach, and even sometimes meat. You can also find local cheeses like feta, manuri or kefalotiri everywhere.
EYES ON THE PIES
Meat pies filled with lamb, veal or sometimes pork are called kreatopita, and they are cooked with wine and tomatoes, garlic, cinnamon and nutmeg, creating a medley of flavors. There's also a variety called pastitsio that combines pasta and meat.
FLEX YOUR MUSSELS
Your choices are endless when it comes to fresh seafood prepared according to local tradition. Try a simple shrimp and pasta dish, or go wild with octapodi kokkinisto, octopus in tomato sauce during your Greece cruise.
