Jack Harlow review – dextrous rapper lets his charisma do the heavy lifting
O2 Academy, Birmingham The Kentucky native’s introduction to Brum may have left him a little bemused, but the city showed its appreciation for his ruthlessly effective hits
I t is the opening night of Jack Harlow’s first headlining European tour, an event the 24-year-old US rapper feels obliged to commemorate in wistful style. “I could never have envisioned coming to Birmingham, England, and selling out a room like this,” he sighs. “3,000 people.” You could suggest this show of humility amounts to laying it on a bit thick, given the size of the venues he’s just packed in the US – he arrives in Brum fresh from the State Farm Arena, Atlanta, which is six times as big – and indeed the fact he’s due to play Wembley Arena tomorrow. Then again, perhaps it has the ring of truth about it: what Louisville, Kentucky-born rapper could imagine playing a venue in Digbeth where the Twang host their legendary festive Twangmas shows?
Whichever it is, the O2 Academy is positively bulging at the seams, with an audience that skews distinctly to the late teen and female. The loudest noise they make all night is when Harlow asks if there are any girls here with their best friend (“the girl who would never fuck your boyfriend,” he adds, for clarification). The response is so deafening and goes on so long that even Harlow looks a little taken aback. He is both handsome and #relatable – on stage tonight, he’s bespectacled and dressed down in a long-sleeve T-shirt and cargo pants – and a better rapper than the detractors he keeps mentioning in his lyrics would have you believe. He’s big on letting the backing track drop out and performing a capella to prove it.
His is a very modern kind of success, bolstered by TikTok – which alighted with relish on both his 2020 breakthrough hit What’s Poppin’ and this year’s global smash First Class – and, occasionally, as much to do with his charming, funny presence online as it is with his music. His hits are more ruthlessly effective than undeniable, as evidenced by tonight’s show, bookended by performances of Dua Lipa and First Class. The former’s chorus is vaguely predicated on wanting to have sex with the titular singer, precisely the kind of meme-friendly content that attracts attention online, but there’s not much of a song attached to it. The latter’s hook is so fantastic that you almost feel churlish for pointing out that it was also fantastic when it was the chorus of Black Eyed Peas vocalist Fergie’s 2007 hit Glamorous: it’s a little unclear what Harlow is bringing to the party, beyond neatly playing on Gen Z’s ongoing love affair with 2000s pop.
That said, live might be the best way to experience Jack Harlow. He zips through tracks at high speed: 24 songs in barely an hour, his earliest hits conjoined into a medley. It’s a smartly relentless approach that means the kind of longueurs found on his patchy second album, Come Home the Kids Miss You, are noticeable by their absence. The charisma which he struggles to translate on to record is also a lot more evident on stage: evident enough, in fact, to carry a show that doesn’t have much visual excitement beyond a screen behind him showing amorphous blobs of colour as he performs.
His between-song patter is just the right side of slick, adapted to reference going to “the pub” and discuss what Americans call soccer with the audience, a little hampered by the fact that he clearly doesn’t know the names of any local teams: “Who here supports Manchester City?” he asks to a chorus of boos. “Chelsea? Wigan Athletic?” He’s been walking around Birmingham today, he tells the crowd, who cheer in anticipation of a glowing homage to the city’s manifold delights. “It was definitely interesting. Maybe we came on a weird day or something.”
If their civic pride is wounded, they don’t show it: as Harlow launches into I Wanna See Some Ass they scream and sing along, as they have been doing all night. “I’m coming the fuck back!” he yells, delightedly. Probably not here specifically – there’s an arena a few miles up the road – but that aside, you don’t doubt it for a minute.

Great show. Really fun. Good balance between calm and rowdy. Harlow’s a nice dude too. Came on stage repping Nationals gear which was cool. He was cracking up the whole crowd every time he said “Ooooh my gooooood!” Had a great time

Just days after the release of his sophomore studio album, Jack Harlow has announced he’s ready to hit the road for his “Come Home the Kids Miss You Tour,” with the Miami hip-hop duo City Girls in support.
Following a hit 2020 major-label debut and after picking up a slew of crowning titles (including Variety ‘s Hitmaker of the Year award), Harlow’s highly anticipated “Come Home the Kids Miss You” sees the rapper-songwriter “building upon his bedrock strengths and finds a heady musical elixir for his new album, a vibe more potent, direct and swaggering than on his first major label outing,” writes A.D. Amorosi in Variety ‘s review . The album was preceded by the Fergie-sampling “First Class,” which was Harlow’s first No. 1 as a solo act (he also topped the Billboard Hot 100 last year with his tag-team with Lil Nas X, “Industry Baby”).
Produced by Live Nation, the 22-date tour (additional tour dates will be announced) kicks off on September 6 at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, TN. Harlow will continue his nationwide trek with stops in Los Angeles, Miami, San Diego and more.

Jack Harlow Returns to Kentucky in ‘No Place Like Home’ VR Concert Trailer
- By Larisha Paul

All roads lead back to Kentucky for Jack Harlow in the first official trailer for No Place Like Home: A VR Concert . The concert and documentary special will premiere on Jan. 4 at 5 p.m. PST via Meta Horizon Worlds featuring footage captured on the rapper’s third annual run of hometown shows.
In the trailer, Harlow stands in front of a thousands-deep audience while soaking in the love of his greatest champions. His stage production is simple, with few frills decorating the stage or distracting from the performance. At its core, it’s Harlow and his audience locked into a one-to-one exchange of creative passion.

Harlow’s No Place Like Home tour began on Nov. 24 and extended through Dec. 3. He performed six shows throughout Kentucky, making stops in Owensboro, Pikeville, Covington, Murray, and Bowling Green before closing out the hometown run with a grand finale in Lexington at Rupp Arena.

The No Place Like Home tour marked Harlow’s only official run of headlining shows in 2023. The rapper shared his third studio album Jackman in April, but the project didn’t yield any hits that reached the magnitude of “First Class” from his previous record, 2022’s Come Home the Kids Miss You . But it functioned as more of a re-centering record for Harlow, who had a hit in his pocket with the follow-up single “Lovin’ On Me.”
Both of the hit songs appeared on the set list for the tour, as well as discography highlights “Creme,” “Thru the Night,” “Route 66,” and “Sundown,” among others.

From superfan Jack Harlow to the Euro pipeline: Meet Louisville City FC, one of American soccer's hidden gems
The grammy-nominated rapper is a frequent guest as the hype builds around loucity's approach in usl.
Louisville City FC could soon enter the conversation as one of the most consistently successful clubs in the annals of American soccer history, joining the likes of Seattle Sounders, New York Cosmos, LA Galaxy and D.C. United.
LouCity would still need a few more years of success to reach that status, but for those uninitiated in USL Championship, this is one of the hidden gems in soccer, with a fervent fan base and a strong pipeline to Europe.
The club has reached postseason play every year of its existence since beginning play in 2015. It has also advanced to at least the semifinals of the playoffs in every year as well, winning it all in 2017 and 2018.
LouCity became the first team in USL history to play in three consecutive USL Cup Finals and to win back-to-back USL Cups. Their success has been unprecedented in American soccer.
Coached by Danny Cruz, Louisville City have gotten off to another strong start this season winning all three of their matches so far while conceding only one goal. Hosting Indy Eleven on Saturday, April 6, soccer in the Derby City will be on full display on CBS at 4 p.m. ET. Cruz took the reigns in Lousiville in 2021 following being an assistant coach and technical director since 2018. He had an extensive playing career in MLS and retired in 2017.
From Grammy-nominated rapper Jack Harlow being a regular attendee at games to the entire community getting behind both Lousiville City and NWSL side Racing Louisville, the city is standing out as a gem among the American soccer market. That means that pressure is high for Cruz, but as he told CBS Sports, "Nobody is going to put more pressure on me than I already put on myself."
"[Harlow] is an incredible supporter of the city of Louisville, the state of Kentucky. It's been a lot of fun to have him at our games, he's a big supporter of this organization," Cruz said. "You also look at his buy-in in the community has been tremendous, he doesn't forget where he's come from and I think that becomes really important but it's been a joy to have him, to see him celebrating the goals this weekend, it was awesome."

Behind the hot scoring of Wilson Harris, the youngest player ever to score 50 USL Championship goals, Lousiville City are reinventing themselves to stay ahead of the curve.
"Wilson is a huge part of how we want to play and what we try to do every single day here. I think the most important thing that people forget is he has been a consistent goal scorer year in and year out and I don't truly believe he gets the credit that he deserves," Cruz said on building a team behind Harris. "He's reliable, he's a kid who works hard every single day, he's a part of our leadership group for a reason and I feel really good about the person that he is.

"My belief is that his work-rate defensively and with the ball puts him in a position to score a lot of goals. He's someone that I can trust, who wants to be the best and do everything that he can to push himself to be better every day. So I want to see him continue to grow, want to continue to see him put himself in a position where he can continue to challenge himself whether that's here or elsewhere, but I think he's one of the most reliable nines that I've been around."

That focus on the holistic player is one of the things that consistently keeps Louisville at the top of its game. Bringing in guys who fit the club and then doing the best they can to help them improve. It's a sign of a leadership group that's on the same page about what's done and when looking at how Louisville makes signings, it's a unique, cohesive approach.
"It starts with a collective buy-in from everybody in the organization. From our ownership group to our president to our first team coaches to our academy directors and our academy players, you know? The community is completely bought into what we're doing," Cruz said. "We have nothing but support from them and my hope would be that the community would also tell you that we try to do everything that we can to make sure that we're getting out to the community and supporting them as well. When you look at how we operate on a daily basis, it truly is a holistic approach where everybody's trying to push everybody to be better every day in all facets of the club from on the field to off the field."
In conjunction with club president James O'Connor, Cruz discusses player signings and the direction of the club but O'Connor, having sat in Cruz's seat previously as head coach of Louisville City, provides him with a unique perspective of managing things.
O'Connor got the success rolling coaching Louisville when they started play in 2015 before heading to Orlando City in 2018. But he returned to Lousiville to assist with launching Racing Lousiville and the Lousiville City youth academy. It says a lot about a club's ethos to have someone like O'Connor return but after speaking with Cruz about their relationship and soccer in the city, it's easy to see why a return would be enticing.
"He's someone who pushes me to want to be better every day and when we go through the roster at the end of the season, it's constant communication on what we feel we need to improve in order to go win a championship," Cruz said on his relationship with O'Connor. "I appreciate the relationship that I have with him, I think it's a good counterbalance to make sure that I'm thinking deeply about some of the decisions that I do make and we both want the same thing and that's to win a championship.
"He can relate, he knows the feelings that go on in the manager's head when you just lost a game, he knows I know we're aligned on how we see the same, how we want to play and how we see Louisville City," Cruz continued. "We both have a a passionate love for this club, this city, in this game, and so I feel we push one another to be better. James pushes me and I know he feels that I push him but I think it's really healthy for growth and to get to a place where you're improving as a group and individually as well."
When you have a connection like that at the top of the club, it's only natural that it would filter down to the club culture under them. It's something special with how Louisville does things and it doesn't stop with the first team. The academy is also making waves with Jonathan Gomez and Joshua Wynder both securing big moves abroad to Real Sociedad and Benfica , respectively, in recent years. Being able to improve from within and externally will ensure that there are always players pushing for starts to keep those in front of them sharp, a great luxury of talent to have.
Expectations couldn't be higher in Louisville but that's a good thing as their results so far call for them to be sky high. Cruz and everyone around the club are pushing the right buttons to continue hitting those expectations as well with Saturday's match against Indy Eleven as the latest chance to make a statement.

Rating: 5 out of 5 I didn't know as many Harlow songs as I thought I did by Durbkat on 12/7/23 Rupp Arena - Lexington. Overall the concert was great, I wish Jack had mixed in his hits with his more obscure stuff rather than saving it all for the second half and I wish had would have sang the full song instead of just 60 seconds of it.
