Loreto, Baja Sea Kayaking Tour

3-6 day sea kayaking tours in the islands of loreto bay national marine park.

Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Sea of Cortez is one of the best winter sea kayaking destinations in North America. Over several days, you’ll paddle through the spectacular waters of Loreto Bay National Marine Park, backed by the high cliffs and sandy beaches of its desert landscapes. The towering escarpments of the Sierra Giganta Mountains will serve as your constant backdrop for an adventure you’ll never forget.

Spend your days kayaking, hiking, and snorkeling in this magnificent setting, with sea lions and dolphins regularly breaking the water’s surface. Blue-footed boobies, pelicans, and frigate birds will be your companions along the journey, as will a colorful array of tropical fish. Each winter, blue whales migrate through the area while fin, humpback, and sei whales are also occasionally spotted.

Our Islands of Loreto Bay kayaking tours explore the beautiful Islas Danzante and Carmen, with itineraries that extend from three to six days. You can opt for a self-supported or motorboat-supported itinerary, with the latter carrying all camping gear, food, and supplies for you, including a cooler with ice for cold drinks.

WEATHER-CAUSED TRIP ALTERATIONS

Strong winds and/or rough water conditions sometimes prevent our trips from going as scheduled. We are at the mercy of nature, as well as the local Port Captains who determine if ports are open or closed.  In particular, on our La Paz-based trips, winds may prevent us from crossing from the Port to Espiritu Santo Island which may also be reason for the Port Captain to close the port or prohibit crossing.  In these cases there are different solutions.  Sometimes we have to delay the crossing by a day or two, or have to leave Espiritu Santo Island a day or two early.  In these cases we provide a substitute activity for the day(s) we cannot kayak.  If the weather forecast predicts a series of days with strong winds, we also reserve the right to transfer the trip to Magdalena Bay on the Pacific Coast, which is almost always in calm, protected waters.  We recognize this isn't ideal, however we have no control over nature.  Most people prefer to still have a trip going, versus no kayak trip at all.  Decisions to alter trips are not made until the last minute*, since we are basing our decisions on wind and weather forecasts that can change.  Your guides will inform you at the evening orientation meeting if the trip location has changed or the itinerary has been altered. We use apps like Windy or Windfinder Pro to monitor winds and forecasts.  The safety and security of our trips is the primary focus of our decisions.

If you purchase Trip Insurance and wish to cancel on the day of the trip, the "Trip Interruption" coverage may apply if Mexican authorities have closed the Port.  If you have questions about your coverage, call the toll-free number on your Travel Insurance policy to ask.  Neither our guides nor our office staff can determine if coverage will apply. Sea Kayak Adventures does reserve the right to modify and alter trip itineraries and in these circumstances will not provide any refund of trip monies paid.

*Last-minute means no sooner than noon the day prior.  Final information will be provided at the evening orientation meeting.

ALL PRICES IN US DOLLARS. We will do our best to adhere to the itineraries and trip descriptions listed on our website. However, tour itineraries or sub contractors (such as taxi, cruise boats or hotels) may change slightly due to reasons beyond our control including but not limited to Acts of God, wind, waves, inclement weather or other. We always welcome you to call us to clarify any item - often this is the best way to fully clarify expectations - call us collect or on our toll-free number. You will be sent pre-trip email with latest details within a month of your tour - it is your responsibility to check in with us prior to your trip to see if you have all the information you need. We will always do our best to provide you with the best possible tour and to fully meet your expectations to the best of our ability.

Absolutely amazing trip!

We had an absolutely amazing trip! Our guides Diego, Jennifer, and Rafael were the absolute best. They built great rapport with all of the students, engaged them in the biology and geology of the place, and truly inspired them to ask questions and be curious. We could not have asked for a better team of guides. They consistently checked I with us about how things were going, and were on top of all the food allergies that accompanied our group!

Incredible experience

Incredible experience. Sherman, Jenny & Damien were simply incredible. They took care of our bodies & our spirits. The entire crew was truly amazing. I was a novice kayaker, had never camped in my life & was medically complicated. I felt completely taken care of & able to simply enjoy the adventure. Thanks guys!!

What a fun adventure!

What a fun adventure! We had such a blast with our guides. The food was amazing and the experience of kayaking & snorkeling around Isla Danzante was magical. Definitely recommend this trip and loved the town of Loreto, super safe and great restaurants.

A Floating Introduction

Launching from Loreto, Baja California Sur, this sea kayaking expedition is a floating introduction to one of Mexico’s most important reserves, Loreto National Marine Park. Discover the history and architecture of the first Spanish colonial city on the Baja Peninsula and jump from cobblestones to skipping stones on the surrounding islands of the marine park. Loreto is an official Magical Town. “Pueblo Mágico” is a Mexican government designation that recognizes towns that are rich in tradition, culture and history. The magic status is also a commitment to preserving and sharing the cultural and natural heritage of towns like Loreto.

Visit an Official “Magic Town”

Experience the sea of cortez.

This trip offers lots of playtime—in the water, on foot and by sea kayak. On Isla Coronado, walk across the talcum-white beach and follow the switchback hiking trail to the top of Volcan Coronado for panoramic views of the rolling desert hills and cobalt Sea of Cortez. It’s a balance of camping and relaxed oceanfront hotel stays with an authentic Mexican menu to spice everything up in between.

Feel the baja vibe.

Flights to Loreto International Airport (LTD) in Baja California Sur state typically arrive mid-afternoon. There’s time to unwind and get in the proper groove before gathering with your fellow paddlers for a welcome dinner and trip orientation.

The historic Mission of Our Lady of Loreto is located in the center of town (as is the Jesuit Missions of Loreto Museum) and the local market is always fun to poke around. You can also fill the hunger gap with some authentic local Mexican eats before dinner or feel the sea’s embrace on a walk along the malecón. Don’t miss out on the chocolate clams—they’re a local specialty.

We gather for dinner tonight at a nearby restaurant and share stories of what brought us all magically together.

Included Meals

Accommodations

Hotel Oasis

Isla Coronado

Hike high or low.

After breakfast, we meet in the lobby at 8 a.m. and transfer to the marina where we board our boat. Today is dedicated to exploring Isla Coronado, the second smallest island of the Loreto chain.

There are two optional hikes: The out-and-back three-hour, 3.6 mile (6 km) hike up Volcan Coronado offers a panorama of the undulating desert hills of Baja California Sur and the expansive Gulf of California. For those who would like to ease into the day at a gentler, flatter pace, the interpretive desert plants eco-walk is one mile long (1.6 km).

We have lunch together in a shaded picnic shelter at the beach before circumnavigating the island (by boat) to snorkel and swim near a small, curious colony of sea lions.

Over dinner in Loreto, our guide will instruct us on how to prepare and pack for tomorrow’s sea kayaking expedition.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Van shuttle (20 minutes), boat (45 minutes)

Island Time

Camping on cortez.

On this sea kayaking expedition, we paddle for two to four hours each day. We have lingering lunch breaks, floating rest stops and time to hike, snorkel, swim and snooze on the beach. Snorkelers will love the rainbow array of bi-colour parrotfish, convict tangs, yellowtail snapper, porcupinefish, balloonfish and moray eels that are found in the shallow waters and reefs.

Thriving populations of whales, dolphins (bottlenose, common and spinner) and flying manta rays are always a thrill to witness. Maybe a sailfish or marlin will give us an acrobatic flip.

At day’s end, we linger over hors-d’oeuvre hour, hyper local fresh food and margaritas at our campsite. Before retreating to our tents, we must check for the captivating glow of bioluminescence in the sea!

Beach camping on Isla Carmen (two nights) and Isla Danzante (two nights), depending on sea conditions and weather

Back to the Magic Town

We absorb every inch of today’s sunrise over a hot coffee or strong tea before our final day of kayaking. After breakfast, we spend the morning paddling the shorelines in search of more marine life above and below.

We break camp after lunch and paddle to our take-out site around 2 p.m. Here, we unload our kayaks and jump in a van shuttle back to Loreto to check into our hotel and shower off all the sand and salt from our awesome expedition.

Later, we gather for dinner at a local restaurant and reflect on our expedition highlights so far.

Cave Art Class

We leave Loreto mid-morning and drive one hour across the canyons and parched arroyos (seasonal waterways that only fill and flow after sufficient rainfall) to San Javier. We walk around the tiny town (population: 130) and visit the Mission of San Javier, established in 1744.

Next, we stop at a nearby ranch to pick up our local guide for an interpretive tour of the cave paintings hidden in the Sierra Madre mountains. They are a ghostly reminder of the Indigenous population that left their indelible mark over 7,000 years ago (according to carbon dating on the paintings).

We follow a rocky trail upwards for 30 minutes, bouldering as we go—the views across the cacti-peppered valley and distant mountains steal the art show.

Over a simple, homemade lunch at the ranch, we learn about the life of our hosts before returning to Loreto late in the afternoon.

3 hours total by shuttle van

Extending the Magic

You can book your departure flight for any time today. Breakfast will be provided at the hotel, but we are required to travel to the airport independently.

If you wish to spend more time in the Magic Town, abracadabra–alakazam! You should! Hug your Wild Women expedition crew goodbye…for now. Where should you paddle together next? The Galápagos? Italy?

Know Before You Go

This trip starts in Loreto, Mexico (airport code: LTO), and finishes in Los Cabos, Mexico.

This walk begins on a boardwalk and then shifts to a well-traveled path. The trail then becomes more technical with lava rock and boulders with cairns marking the way. Curving ever upwards on switchbacks, the last 15 minutes are steep and the most challenging as the terrain becomes sandy with loose stones underfoot.

The Volcan Coronado hike is rated moderately difficult. Walking sticks or poles are recommended. You may turn around at any point on this hike if you are uncomfortable. Please wear proper footwear for this hike, it ain’t no walk in the park!

Ultimately, Mother Nature determines the route and itinerary with her voting power. Winds and park permits can influence the order of daily activities, so the paddling portion of this expedition must be read with a grain of sea salt. We will be supported by a motorized panga boat that will carry our camping gear, food and water, which means the sea kayaks will be lighter and faster.

On expedition, have your biceps ready to paddle around 2–4 hours a day. Distances will vary but expect crossings that are 2–2.5 miles long (3–4 km) with potentially windy conditions.

Head’s up: On expedition, there are no showers! Fresh water is reserved for drinking and cooking only. You can use saltwater and soap off above the high tide line, or use disposable shower wipes if you wish. A porta potty will be transported to each campsite for solid waste. You can urinate above the high tide line or in a separate porta-potty bucket—your guide will cover all of this in a campsite orientation.

How We Support You

Ready for a big adventure? We’re in it together. On this trip, we sea kayak for hours at a time, snorkel and spend several nights camping. It’s a trip for advanced beginner sea kayakers, meaning you must have sea kayaking experience and be extremely comfortable in various, changing conditions on the water. Yes, it’s a challenge, but you’re never alone. Like thousands of women before you, you’ll draw on strength you didn’t know you had and come out feeling like the goddess you are.

Still have questions or concerns? Let’s talk about it.

What the trip entails.

This is an active, multi-activity adventure. We would like you to be comfortable with the following:

  • checkmark icon Padding in a sea kayak for 4–5 hours
  • checkmark icon Camping in a tent (4 nights)
  • checkmark icon Being in and on the water, as there may be unexpected swims and snorkeling is a big part of the trip
  • checkmark icon Not comfortable swimming? Please let us know!
  • checkmark icon Physical Rating: Moderate – Challenging (Be prepared for active physical activity. Trips average 5 to 8 hours of physical activity most days, and depending on the shape you are in, they typically require activity specific training ahead of the trip.)

Ready to Start Your Adventure?

This is the classic Baja kayaking tour , on a wilderness shore dominated by the stunning Sierra de la Giganta – the “Range of the Giants.” Its multi-colored volcanic layers terminate in vertical cliffs that plunge straight into the Sea of Cortez. We kayak along the edge of this spectacular escarpment and camp on remote beaches at the mouths of narrow arroyos and canyons that penetrate the mountains. No support boat or basecamp are used on this adventurous, free-ranging Loreto to La Paz kayak tour.

Although this hidden coast is mostly uninhabited, we will have the opportunity to visit an isolated fishing community and hike to the ruins of the Jesuit Mission Los Dolores founded in 1720. Twisting canyons filled with unique desert plants invite hikers and photographers to stretch their legs after kayaking. Snorkeling is superb with a wide variety of tropical fishes and soft corals to enjoy. Whale watching and dolphins encounters occur along the 65 mile Loreto to La Paz kayak route. Our Baja kayaking staff will be available at all times to lead hikes and snorkeling trips, identify flora and fauna, and discuss the natural history of the Baja California region.

Sea Kayaking Baja – Loreto to La Paz Kayak Tour Itinerary

  • Day 1 – Arrival in Loreto Mexico. You will be greeted by our ground agents and escorted to a van bound for the beachfront Desert Inn. Your Baja kayak tour guides meet you that evening for a trip orientation in the lobby at 8 PM. Dinner this evening is a no-host affair at a nearby restaurant.
  • Day 2 – First day of sea kayaking in Baja. Kayak tour leaders meet you at 7:00am at your Loreto hotel. After a drive from Loreto to the launch beach, we enjoy a continental breakfast and engage in a sea kayaking and safety class. That afternoon we begin kayaking to the first Baja campsite south of Agua Verde on this hidden coast.
  • Day 3 to 8 – Each day we kayak for four to five hours and cover 7-10 miles. Like most Baja kayak tours, paddling is mostly done in the morning with afternoons free to pursue other activities. Frequent stops are made to explore coves and beaches and to stretch our legs and eat. There is ample time in the afternoons for hiking the rugged desert canyons, snorkeling, taking photographs, or just lounging on the beach. We will visit some isolated ranches, fishing camps, and a historical mission founded nearly 3 centuries ago.
  • Day 9 – Last day of sea kayaking in Mexico. After finishing the final leg of the Loreto to LaPaz kayak tour this morning, we meet our vans at a beach in Bahia de La Paz and drive to our hotel in the nearby town of La Paz. This charming little city has a wonderful seaside walkway and open air cafes in the Mexican tradition. We convene for a no-host farewell dinner at a nearby La Paz restaurant.
  • Day 10 – Departure from La Paz, Mexico. Unless you have arranged to spend extra time in Baja California, your guides will arrange transportation to the La Paz airport two hours before your flight departs from Mexico.

Suggested Activities in and around La Paz. Local agents and tour operators in La Paz can arrange some regional specialties for you. We suggest you extend your vacation in Mexico by taking a one-day whale watching excursion in Magdalena Bay . Scuba charters can sometimes locate whale sharks and snorkeling tours with the sea lions at Los Islotes is a fun activity for non-divers.

Quick Tour Facts: The Loreto to La Paz kayak trip is scheduled sparingly between October and March. Trip fee of $1899. See our Baja Kayaking FAQ page for details on age limitations and other information.

How to get to Loreto

There are many ways to get to Loreto. With so many changes in the aviation industry, it can be a challenge to visit our lovely Pueblo Magico. As of June 2022, there are 3 airlines and 2 bus lines that stop in Loreto. For folks flying from Tijuana the CBX bridge from San Diego has proven to be a very safe and easy way to cross the border.

The origin of the kayak dates back to the Aleutian settlers, the settlers of northern Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Siberia, etc., for about 3000 years, being one of the oldest boats of man. It is said that the word kayak means “man-boat” and some other historians describe it as “clothing to walk on the water”, whatever its meaning, the more tailored the kayak, the more comfortable it will be to use.

The art of kayaking is one of the most relaxing and surprising sports that you can practice almost all year round in the waters of Loreto. By relaxing, I mean that there is nothing more calming than you and nature hand in hand.

The surprising thing, on the contrary; is that hundreds of stingrays or dolphins cross below you, that suddenly you see a whale shark near your kayak, or you hear a blow from a blue whale or fin in front of you.

Your experience as a rower will mark the rhythm of your adventure, but all levels have a place in this bay, there is something for all tastes and different experiences. It is important that you take into account the safety rules that the experts tell you, in addition to choosing the right boat for your experience, or requesting an introductory kayak class.

Loreto has very professional tour operators, who can help you prepare your trip, whether it be a few hours off the coast of Loreto, or visiting the beaches of Coronados or Danzante for a few hours, you can choose to row from a board, a kayak open, or learn in a sea kayak or make it more fun with your companions in double kayaks, the decision is yours.

The Islands themselves being volcanic in nature are marked by rocky shorelines, dynamic wall dives, huge underwater rock formations, and finger reefs of rock and coral that make diving here absolutely incredible. Advanced, as well as novice, divers are sure to find numerous locations to their liking, such as wreck dives on a Navy sunken minesweeper and dives in Punta Coyote, which both offer a rich diving experience and diverse marine life encounters.

Have you always wondered what it’s like to breathe underwater? If you want to try scuba diving, but aren’t quite ready to take the plunge into a certification course, DISCOVER SCUBA DIVING is for you. This whale watching tour will provide casual, but magical encounters with Mother Nature’s largest animals. Discover the world´s most spectacular sightings today.

KAYAK SNORKELING & REEF TOUR

Discover the incredible underwater world surrounding Loreto by following our guide and kayaking alongside the resort’s beach to nearby coral reefs filled with multicolor tropical fish.

TWILIGHT LED PADDLE BOARD

This tour offers a unique experience that allows you to enjoy nature night cruising aboard a paddle board. Together we’ll head towards the reef located in the south of Ensenada Blanca with LED lights connected to the bottom of our boards, illuminating the seabed and attracting the many species that can only be enjoyed during the afternoon and evening. Accompanied by an experienced guide, we offer a fun, safe, innovative, and interactive activity for our guests.

CORONADO’S ISLAND TOUR

Coronado island is home to great snorkeling next to beautiful, white, sandy beaches. It is also home to a large sea lion colony and one of the most visited islands due to its close proximity to Loreto. A snorkelers paradise! The turquoise waters surrounding the island offer outstanding visibility for those wishing to explore the sea bottom. The island itself is covered with rocky crags, except for the southeast corner which becomes a marine turtle sanctuary at certain times of the year. Female sea turtles swim to the beaches to lay their eggs. If you prefer to stroll around the island instead of relaxing at the beach under a “beach palapa,” you will find many species of animals and indigenous plant life. Our three-hour adventure doesn’t just stop at the beach, we take you for a lap around the island to see all the wildlife, including the sea lion colony.

ATV DESERT TOUR

Come and ride among landscapes that only Loreto Baja can offer! To get you started, we provide you with top brand protection gear such as goggles and a helmet along with the keys so that you can get a feeling for your single or two-passenger 420 cc TRX Honda Deluxe ATV. Professional pilots will guide you as you explore the beauty of this rugged environment, on stunning paths snaking between the mountains and Sea of Cortez on our Off-Road Runners tour.

SAN JAVIER MISSION EXPEDITION

The San Javier excursion into the past is a three-hour air-conditioned trip riding in the comfort of a modern Mercedes van. You will enjoy dazzling views while climbing into the Sierra de la Giganta Mountains. Visit the historic edifice of a fully standing ancient Jesuit mission. Stroll through the cobblestone streets of town, luscious fruit orchards, and the oldest olive garden in Baja. Afterward we travel back down the mountain roads to view the ancient cave paintings at “Cuevas Pintas.” Our journey into the past would not be complete without trying the unique tastes of delicious Mexican food, including handmade tortillas and fresh cheese from a local ranch. After touring the Mexican village, we will stop to enjoy a tasty lunch. Upon heading back to Loreto, we experience our best moment yet as we catch more panoramic sunset views.

HORSEBACK ADVENTURE

Come and enjoy one of the most relaxing experiences in the Baja desert while admiring the Sierra la Giganta Mountain range and the Sea of Cortez in the distance. During the tour, our expert guide will show you our local and endemic flora and fauna, have a talk about the history of the people who lived in this region before the arrival of the missionaries, and explain how the life of the descendants was developed. The walk starts with a short introduction of the tour and a 10-minute horse management explanation. After leaving the meeting point, we head off to the desert, taking one of the oldest roads and crossing several canyons, all while enjoying breathtaking views of the Sierra la Giganta and Sea of Cortez. Our journey lasts approximately two and half hours, making a stop to have a cold drink or enjoy an energy bar. It is one of the best experiences in the Baja desert and definitely a must do on your list!

CONCEPTION BAY EXPEDITION

Come join us on an adventure to one of the most beautiful beach spots in Mexico! Turquoise waters and white sandy beaches blanket Conception Bay! Venture off on our Mulege Surf and Turf tour where you will explore the beach and learn about Baja culture and history on our visit to the Mission in town. Take in magnificent views of the Baja Desert, Sierra de la Giganta, and part of the Sierra de Guadalupe. On arrival to the town of Mulege, we take a light walk around the village, passing by the 3rd mission established in Baja California by the Jesuits, take in a panoramic view of the village, and enjoy a delicious meal at a local restaurant! Join us while we find beaches of white sand, hills of volcanic stone, and history filled with cobblestone streets and crystalline waters of turquoise color.

OUTBACK CANIPOLE CAVE PAINTINGS

In the northern region of the State of Baja California Sur, there is the San Francisco Mountain range where there is one of the nuclei of cave paintings that abound throughout this area. Hundreds of years before the arrival of the Missioners, the inhabitants of the Baja California Peninsula organized in tribes of huntsmen. Most of the knowledge that we have from that time has been collected from the accurate reading of cave paintings. Join us for a time travel activity with our knowledgeable guides. Along the way you’ll enjoy beautiful landscapes that go from the imposing La Giganta mountain range to hundreds of hectares of fertile soil till we reach the meeting point where we will leave the van to start a 45-min walk into the heart of the mountains to discover the cave paintings. As we walk, your guide will explain details of the fauna and flora found there.

the largest animal ever to have inhabited the planet

Whale Watching from Loreto

These are panga (local motorboat) tours with a knowledgeable captain/guide. The best season is from January to mid-March.

Every spring, the rich waters of the Loreto National Marine Park draw the world’s largest animal to come feed. This is one of the few places in the world where blue whales consistently come close to land, and scientists have long come here to study them.

Whether you have a scientific bent, or are a nature-lover in general, being in the presence of such giants is awe-inspiring. There are not many animals we get so excited simply to see them breathe!

Blue whales are not alone. Fin whales, the world’s second largest, are actually residents in the Gulf of California, and do come by in springtime as well. Humpbacks are common. Both bottlenose and common dolphins travel here in large pods. California sea lions haul out on remote islands. Sea turtles are around if you’re lucky enough to spot one.

UNESCO’s description of the Gulf Islands World Heritage Site (in which the Loreto National Marine Park is included), states that one third of the world’s cetacean species can be found in the Gulf of California. Sperm whales come in pods in the summer. Orcas have been seen and recorded singing. Pilot whales, and a number of rare cetaceans have been seen off Loreto. What will you see out there?

This amazing experience is private for your group and lasts approximately 5 hours. It includes lunch, life jacket, dry bag, panga (motorboat), captain, guide, and Marine Park permits. Tour leaves from Loreto waterfront around 8am and returns around 1pm.

The waters off Loreto are exposed to weather. For your safety and enjoyment, we don’t send out trips with a forecast of 20kts or more of wind, and start to consider rescheduling with a forecast of 15kts. The more flexible your schedule, the better your chance of seeing wildlife and enjoying your trip.
