Kendrick Lamar Is Really Getting Some Fits off Lately

“I’m best-dressed moving forward,” Kendrick Lamar declares on “The Hillbillies,” his new track with Baby Keem. A rapper  boasting about being stylish wouldn’t normally be news—but it is in the case of Kendrick, who’s remained a relatively modest dresser (at least in comparison to his fashion-plate contemporaries like  Future ,  A$AP Rocky , and  Tyler, the Creator ) throughout his decade-plus career, primarily sticking to a very laid-back, West Coast wardrobe of hoodies, plaid shirts, and Nike Cortezes. In 2023, though? The Pulitzer-winning MC might now truly have the menswear bonafides to back up that bold best-dressed claim.

On “The Hillbillies,” which dropped on streaming this week, Kendrick supplements his proclamation with a whole host of insider references: He likens himself to Taz Arnold, the producer and fellow LA native known for his steezy “Compton cowboy” style who once appeared in  the famed Tommy Ton photo of Ye, Virgil, and crew at Paris Fashion Week in 2009;  on Twitter , Kendrick called Taz “my mount rushmore of style.” He namechecks designers  Grace Wales Bonner (“I ain’t even gotta fact check, all I’m wearing is Wales Bonner”) and  Martine Rose (“Wear Martine when I board jets”). Kendrick fans know he’s been on a real Martine kick lately, having worn the London-based label throughout his most recent tour.

In the last year or so—or ever since he emerged at the 2022 Super Bowl halftime show wearing  a custom flared Louis Vuitton suit —Kendrick’s been on a full fashion tear, enlisting celebrity stylist Taylor McNeill to help him pull out big fits at every turn. Just after releasing his long-awaited fifth album  Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers last year, he debuted a few tracks while sitting front row at  the Spring 2023 Louis Vuitton show as a tribute to the house’s late designer Virgil Abloh; he wore a Tiffany & Co. diamond-encrusted crown of thorns, the same one he donned for the album’s artwork. When he collected a Best Rap Album Grammy for  Mr. Morale a year later, he gave his acceptance speech dressed in—who else?—head-to-toe Martine Rose.

At last month’s  Met Gala , Kendrick Lamar skipped posing on the iconic museum steps despite wearing one of the evening’s coolest looks: Dressed by Chanel, he wore a quilted black leather car coat over a white T-shirt, loose black trousers, and a Chanel scarf tied around his waist like a belt. He sported Chanel double-Cs in unorthodox places: iced out on one of his central incisors, embroidered onto a backwards Starter cap that also featured the logo of his beloved LA Dodgers. At the most-photographed celebrity red carpet of the year, the only pictures of Kendrick that evening were taken inside.

But the lo-fi, pleasantly silly video for “The Hillbillies” is a fit check bonanza. Kendrick wears snakeskin boots, crochet knits, shredded Japanese denim, even a Rick Owens puffer, in addition to loads of Martine Rose and a whole host of other deep-cut brands. (He also sports a cheeky pair of Adidas Sambas, possibly designed by Wales Bonner, which incidentally puts him  in a hotspot within the general best-dressed discourse.) There’s even a cameo from a fellow Big Style Stepper—Tyler, the Creator—who stays true to his usual gold teeth and penny loafers vibe.

Tyler, Future, Rocky and Kendrick all came up in the late 2000s and early 2010s, as hip-hop style was reshaped via the pioneering fashion instincts of Ye and Pharrell—the latter of whom will debut his first collection for Louis Vuitton in Paris later this month. New generations of style-minded artists have proliferated in their wake, making the best-dressed pool so well-populated these days that it’s hard to keep up. Thankfully, Kendrick isn’t taking up the gauntlet lightly.

In the decades since hip-hop’s conception, artists have taken transformative steps when it comes to communicating stories. While the genre has invariably been tethered to innovation and multiple mediums, the scale of performance has been slower to evolve. For years, less is more was the formula when it came to the live show: a rapper, DJ and hype-man were the go-to trifecta. Today, Kendrick Lamar demonstrates how far hip-hop has come with his ongoing “The Big Steppers Tour” — performance art at its pinnacle.

Before Kendrick Lamar and pgLang took the stage in Washington D.C. on Thursday night (August 4), Tanna Leone and Baby Keem, both members of the pgLang team, set it using dramatically different visuals. Leone, the newest signee of pgLang’s self-cultivated record label, opened the show with songs from his April 2022 album “Sleepy Soldier,” treating fans to a medley of ambient lighting, alternating monochromatic visual effects, and a refreshing vocal approach.

Baby Keem led his set with “trademark usa,” the intro to 2021’s “The Melodic Blue,” contrasting the visual direction by donning a white dress shirt, long black tie and black slacks. The outfit matched the syncopated white flashing lights set against an often dark stage as Baby Keem rattled off hit after hit, including “range brothers,” “ORANGE SODA,” “hooligan” and “HONEST.”

This setting mirrored the complex emotional themes tackled in his “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers” album and he dived headfirst into the narrative — holding a ventriloquist dummy to perform the stellar album opener, “United In Grief” to illustrate the evocative portrait painted by “Mr. Morale.” The therapist can be heard throughout the entirety of the set.

Light and shadow took center stage for Mr. Morale’s story as images portrayed ranged from the arguing couple present in the intensely heated track “We Cry Together” resolving their issues through “Purple Hearts” and lamenting over losses yet never accepting defeat in “Count Me Out.” The overall concept meshed perfectly — “Shadow work,” or internal work and change, is a common practice in various therapeutic spaces, demonstrating the depths to which Kendrick uses art to create a new level of connectivity.

Adding another element to the performance’s palette of styles, dancers led the audience through the music with motion and movement. One word was strikingly prevalent with every step, stride, and slide performed by these leaders of form: intention. The dancers flowed through songs such as “N95” and “Silent Hill,” melding together as one in a mind-blowing audio/visual moment of shadow and sound for the song “LUST.” from Kendrick’s 2017 album, “DAMN.” Lamar’s performance of “Crown,” the piano heavy centerpiece to “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers,” featured the rapper himself at the keys.

In the territory of being a megastar, it’s essential to perform the room-shakers, of which Kendrick Lamar has an abundance. But, as noted, the unexpected nature of this set always allows for a twist. Performing from a levitating quarantine room, longtime fans were elated to hear some of their favorites such as “DNA.,” “Money Trees,” “LOYALTY.,” “Backseat Freestyle” and “family ties” with cousin Baby Keem.

To round out this incredible display of sights and sounds, Lamar performed the standout track from “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers,” “Savior,” proving yet again that his elevated artistry carves an unobstructed path to hip-hop’s Mt. Kendrick Lamar Drops Merch from 'The Big Steppers Tour'

Hoodies, tees and a hat are available now..

Kendrick Lamar just wrapped up the North American leg of his famed The Big Stepper Tour , so before he heads out on his European run, he’s blessing fans who couldn’t attend — or who didn’t want to wait in line at the concert — to pick up some album-inspired merchandise.

The LA-based rapper has released a concise range of hoodies, tees and a hat. One design features the graphics from the “N95” music video and the lyrics “Are You Happy For Me?” from the chorus of his record “Savior” that features his cousin and tour opener Baby Keem . This comes printed on a black pullover hoodie and a white tee. The other option is comprised of the tour title written in Old English font on the left chest, and this comes paired with the city stops on the back. Black and cream pullover hoodies along with short-sleeved tees in black, gray and cream are adorned with these graphics. Last on the list is a silver ball cap which is emblazoned with “The Big Steppers Tour North America 2022” in bold blue font.

Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar Played 'America Has a Problem' for the First Time at Her Birthday Concert

The Bey Hive did not have a problem with one of the many surprises Beyoncé had for them at her birthday show. 

At her Renaissance World Tour stop and birthday concert at Los Angeles’ SoFi stadium on Monday, the superstar, 42, brought out special guest and Compton native Kendrick Lamar to perform their collaboration “America Has a Problem (Remix).” Fans caught footage of the duet, which was the first time they performed it together live. 

Dressed in a black and yellow look to match Queen Bey’s ensemble, the rapper, 36, appeared on stage to the crowd’s excitement right before his opening verse. His microphone cut out for a moment, but the “Break My Soul” singer looked unfazed and continued to dance alongside him. 

When the sound came back, the Pulitzer Prize-winning hip-hop star tore through the song with high energy. 

The “Cuff It” artist and the “Humble” rapper released a remix of the track , which first appeared on 2022’s Grammy-winning album Renaissance , back in May. 

They last worked together in 2019 on “Nile,” a song off Beyoncé’s The Lion King: The Gift compilation soundtrack . “Freedom” from 2016’s Lemonade marked their first collaboration together. 

Lamar wasn’t the only exciting guest during Monday’s Renaissance World Tour show. Music legend Diana Ross also came out on stage to sing happy birthday to the pop star. 

Fans filmed the sweet serenade from the lead singer of The Supremes, 79, and caught Beyoncé’s reaction. "Thank you so much, you are so amazing,” Beyoncé told Ross while holding her hand. “This is the legendary Diana Ross! There would be no me without you and thank you so much for all of your sacrifice and your beauty and your grace. Thank you for opening doors for me. Thank you so much.”

A handful of celebrities also stepped out to join in on the festivities. Meghan Markle , Kelly Rowland , Kerry Washington , Keke Palmer , Kim Kardashian , Khloé Kardashian , Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet , among many others, all enjoyed the Monday night concert. 

Celebrations should continue throughout the Grammy winner’s birthday month and remaining Renaissance World Tour shows. Back in August, the star posted a birthday wish to fans on Instagram , asking them to wear silver to her show throughout Virgo season, or the month of her zodiac sign. 

“Virgo season is upon us. This tour has been such a joy and as we approach the last month, my birthday wish is to celebrate with you wearing your most fabulous silver fashions to the shows 8.23 - 9.22!” she posted on her story. "We’ll surround ourselves in a shimmering human disco ball each night. Everybody mirroring each other’s joy. Virgo season together in a house of chrome. See you there!"

‘I’m Best-Dressed Moving Forward’: Kendrick Lamar Makes His Case With ‘The Hillbillies’ Music Video

Kendrick Lamar claimed he was 'best-dressed moving forward' in 'The Hillbillies' video. These are some of the pieces he was wearing.

Kendrick Lamar wasn’t shy about claiming his spot as the best-dressed rapper in the game to open up his new Baby Keem-assisted track “The Hillbillies.”

And throughout the video directed by Neil Farmer, Kendrick certainly makes a good case. There’s a colorful Rick Owens puffer jacket, accessories from up-and-coming labels like Winnie New York and Sunni Sunni, a super exclusive pgLang Dodgers fitted cap on his dome, and so much Martine Rose it looks like he raided her studio. 

Whether Kendrick actually is the best-dressed rapper in the game right now or not is up for debate, but he’s certainly been positioning himself to at least be part of the discussion as of late. There was his full Martine Rose ensemble fresh off the runway at the Grammys. He showed up to the Met Gala in a Chanel look complete with double Cs on a custom diamond tooth. And who could forget the crown of thorns by Tiffany and Co.   that featured over 8,000 diamonds? Look back a bit further, he was showing love to Drew Curry’s young label, Airei , on the stage at Day N Vegas in 2021 (he also wore pieces from the brand in his “Count Me Out” video).

We would also be remiss to not give some credit to stylist Taylor McNeill, who has been helping craft Kendricks’s new style for the past few years and Taz Arnold, a style icon in his own right who Kendrick put on his “Mount Rushmore of style” back in 2022 . He even refers to himself as “Tiny Taz Arn” in the opening moments of the new track. The jeans and cowboy boots are likely a nod to one of Arnold’s signature looks. 

Kendrick has come a long way from white tees and a pair of Nike Cortez. And it’s clear he is making a concerted effort to place his name among the likes of some of rap’s most fashionable individuals like ASAP Rocky or Tyler, the Creator. Martine Rose gets shown the most love in the video for “The Hillbillies,” which should come as no surprise considering he said working with her on looks for his Big Steppers store was a bucket list moment. This particular piece is from the English designer’s Spring/Summer 2023 collection. The distressed grey dad cap features “Barnsley” embroidered across the bill in red, a nod to the town in England. You may have seen this cap previously worn by the likes of Ye and Tremaine Emory. 

Martine Rose x Tommy Jeans Oversized T-Shirt

Sometimes nothing beats a classic logo T-shirt. Another Martine Rose piece prominently featured in “The Hillbillies” is a T-shirt from the designer’s collaboration with Tommy Hilfiger. We get a closeup of the orange and blue co-branding on the chest of the oversized white top at the 1:12 mark. It was released as part of a 35-piece capsule in November 2022.

No, these aren’t just some used Dickies. This is yet another piece from the mind of Martine Rose. No blue collar job, no problem. These double knees have come pre-splattered with colorful paint. Looking for a pair for yourself? The SSENSE sale section comes in clutch once again .

Martine Rose Bulb Toe Ring Loafer

Everyone should have a good pair of loafers in their closet. But Kendrick isn’t just rocking some G.H. Bass Weejuns. Of course, he also goes to Martine Rose for his footwear. This pair sets itself apart from the traditional loafer with its bulbous toe shape and addition of the addition of brass D-ring hardware. If you’re currently trying to experiment a bit with your wardrobe, you can score a pair for $804.

Textile General Store Cashmere Knit Vest

Yes, it’s easy to get sidetracked by all of the Martine Rose that Kendrick wears in this video, but some of the more interesting pieces are the one-off from more lowkey designers. This cashmere knit vest from Textile General Store is a great example. The Boston-based studio crafts all of its piece by hand in small batches. Its other creations include crocheted hats, balaclavas, bucket bags, and even bikini tops.

True to his new Compton Cowboy persona, Kendrick made sure to show off some high quality boots in this video. The brown python pair is from Washington DC designer Sunni Dixon’s Sunni Sunni. It features a 3-inch heel, squared toe, and retails at $940.

Anyone staking their claim as “best dressed” can’t just stick to the well-known designers that everyone else is wearing. Kendrick is proving he isn’t just getting roped into the current trend cycles by rocking some more lowkey accessories from up-and-coming designers. This uncuffed beanie from from Idris Balogun’s Winnie New York is a perfect example. The tan headwear was part of Look 7 from the his Spring/Summer 2022 collection.

Satoshi Nakamoto Studded Army Hoodie

No, that army zip-up you saw Lamar wearing in the video wasn’t some random cop from a Goodwill in LA. The hoodie is actually from Satoshi Nakamoto, named after the pseudonym for the person who helped develop the first bitcoin. It features studs in the “ARMY” lettering, a grey hood and sleeves that contrast its cream torso, and “Satoshi Nakamoto” embroidered above the split kangaroo pouch in green cursive lettering.

Proleta Re Art x Vuja Dé Jeans

ASAP Rocky isn’t the only big artist co-signing Japanese label Proleta Re Art right now. Kendrick completes his Compton Cowboy ensemble with a pair of custom upcycled jeans made in collaboration with fellow Japanese brand Vuja Dé. The pair has been reworked with patchwork on the knee and stitching around the hems and pockets. We’d have probably opted for some sweatpants to lounge on the private jet if we were given the opportunity, but we have to respect his commitment to the fit here. 

Rick Owens Cropped Printed Quilted Down Velvet Jacket

K-Dot in some Rick? While the choice may seem surprising, we don’t blame him for his outerwear choice on his trip to London. This cropped puffer jacket is certainly a statement piece considering its unique teal and red pattern. If that wasn’t enough, it also comes complete with a built-in puffer scarf. It can get chilly across the pond. Might as well be fashionable and functional.

pgLang Los Angeles Dodgers Fitted Hat

Every Kendrick fan’s favorite fitted cap also made an appearance in “The Hillbillies.” Kendrick can be seen sporting a black pgLang Dodgers cap in certain shots. Hopefully, fans will have a chance to cop their own soon. Up to this point, they have been a friends and family exclusive. 

Adidas Sambas

Even Kendrick couldn’t resist the temptation of the fashion internet’s favorite shoe, the Adidas Samba. Lamar can be seen dancing around in front of Dodgers Stadium in a pair of the classic indoor soccer sneakers. There isn’t a clear enough shot to determine if he just went with and O white and black pair or the more elusive Wales Bonner collab. But given his shoutout to the English designer in the song, we wouldn’t be surprised if it was the latter.
