King’s ski trip – easter 2022.

Due to the COVID pandemic, King’s had not been able to run a ski trip since 2019; it was no surprise, then, that interest in this year’s trip was high. The enthusiasm and excitement were palpable on the morning of the 25 th March when the party of 86 (58 pupils, 19 adults and 9 staff) gathered together for the first time to begin the outward journey of the 2022 ski trip.

It was the first time in over ten years that the KCS Ski Trip did not head to what had become its spiritual Swiss home of Arosa. This year, the trip sampled the glitz and glamour of the chic Swiss resort of Crans Montana. However, despite the range of exclusive designer stores that the village had to offer, on the daily town trip the children chose to spend their pocket money in the much more down to earth surroundings of the local supermarket!

We stayed in The Moubra Centre – normally an international summer school – which was ideally suited to cater for the skiing needs of such a large school party, complete with an on-site ski hire room and a door-to-lift bus service. The group had a wide range of skiers from complete beginners to very experienced skiers and the resort had something for everyone. We started the week skiing in beautifully warm sunshine, so warm, in fact, that we were able to sit outside and sunbathe when we returned to the centre in the afternoon! Later in the week, however, the temperature fell dramatically and we finished the week in heavy snow. The weather was not the only thing to change during the week. The skiing ability – particularly of the beginners – improved hugely and it was lovely to see the nursery slopes empty because all of our groups had headed further up the mountain.

Despite the size of the group, everyone worked together superbly well. The children were an absolute credit to the school and it was a pleasure to spend time with them. Special thanks must go to the staff who gave up a precious week of their holiday so that everyone could have such a wonderful experience.

The Next Generation in School Ski Travel

The benefits of a School Ski Trip?

king's school ski trip

School ski trips are no longer the preserve of the very wealthy. Nor are they seen these days as just a holiday for students. For many, they form a key part of the PE curriculum and with the massive improvements to flight times and local airports; easier access to ski resorts across Europe has opened up a whole world of possibilities for this growing market.

Unlike some sports on the National Curriculum, skiing is an ideal activity for any student group. It’s not a difficult sport to learn and it relies on technique rather than strength or fitness.

If you don’t have time to read our whole page, click the link below to read a short summary about what we believe are the biggest benefits of a school ski holiday,

“Skiing is a great leveller,” says David Adkins, Director of Communications at Dulwich College Prep School in South East London. He has taken a large party of boys to Obertauern, the highest ski resort in Austria, for the last four years. “It’s not just the sporty rugby players who do well. Very often, boys who are new to the sport, who may struggle with the traditional P.E. curriculum, discover a talent for skiing.”

As it is an individual rather than team sport and has no intrinsic element of competition, many students who have previously shown little or no enthusiasm in sports often discover an unexpected aptitude and skill for skiing.

king's school ski trip

“Skiing demands completely unique physical skills,” says Tanya Drew, Head of Secondary at Dubai British School, “so often even students who struggle with more traditional sports do well on the slopes. “

The benefits of school ski trips are more than just physical, as Adkins explains.

“I really do see my students change and grow up over the week we spend in Austria. Having to take responsibility for themselves even if it’s only for a short time is very good for them.

“Last year we took 47 boys and there was an excellent pupil to instructor ratio, especially for the seven beginners who all quickly improved enough to be able to ski with the rest of us directly from our hotel to the meeting point up on the slopes.

“Everyday the boys had five hours of instruction – we had five ski instructors dedicated to our group. After our ski lessons, there is plenty of time for other activities. Every day we had a hot lunch in a mountain side restaurant. Again the owner is very friendly and there’s a great atmosphere.

“On other days we went snow shoeing in the woods and tried some bum boarding, where you sit on what is essentially a tiny drinks tray, holding on to a little handle. Because our trip coincided with Obertauern ‘S Winter Festival, we went to a ski show and watched some amazing synchronised skiing, jumping and other feats. In the evenings, we took the boys bowling, had a very funny Karaoke night, did some flood-lit skiing and organised a quiz night. There’s really very little time for boys to miss home. They’re busy and active all the time.

“Every year we’re out in resort making sure all our students get the most out of their ski trip,” “It’s a real pleasure to see even the beginners after just a few days high up on in the mountain. They’re having the time of their life and, almost subliminally learning a life skill. Skiing is like riding a bike, it’s best to learn early and once you’ve cracked it, the skill will stay with you for the rest of your life.”

Adkins says he also sees his boys grow on their trip: “It’s great to watch the boys develop over the week. They have to work as a small team, living and getting on with the others.  I especially like it when a boy who is usually quiet at school, really comes out of himself and is bubbly and loud out on the slopes.”

king's school ski trip

“I’ve also always found my ski trips a great leveller,” says Drew. “Students of all ages and abilities develop a great sense of camaraderie and team spirit. I’ve seen many students with low self esteem grow in confidence over the week. This is true of all school trips, but for me, no other school excursion can provide such a unique experience.”

The benefits of a school ski trip and what students gain?

Last updated: Mar 19th, 2024

the benefits of a school ski trip

Quite frankly, where do we begin? This is a topic we love talking about!

When a school decides to integrate a ski trip into their academic calendar it’s because they know this will be pretty much be a once in a lifetime experience for most of their students!

For most schools the planning of a ski trip begins some 12-18 months in advance to allow parents to pay for their child’s place in instalments – the anticipation and build up to the ski trip begins right there. In most schools getting the numbers required to run the trip isn’t a problem – it’s a life experience most parents are eager to give their child!

So apart from its natural lure what other benefits are there?

Learning a new skill

Many families prefer summer sun as their annual holiday, rather than the lure of skiing and snow. So the opportunity for their child to join the school ski trip provides a great chance for them to experience something new and learn to ski! Many young people get the bug at this point and choose to continue travelling and skiing in their adult years!

Experience new cultures

All skiing destinations and resorts come with their own unique personality and culture. Whether it’s the laid back nature of the Italians or vibrant nature of the Americans, students will return with a real appreciation of the culture of the country they have travelled to. This is real life lesson as they experience the diverse nature of the food, landscape and residents who live here.

Building Confidence

Putting a pair of skis on for the first time can be a daunting thought. Will I be able to stand up, what happens if I fall down, will I make a fool of myself, will I be able to get on and off the ski lift, will I have all the right clothes and equipment? Questions that will have to be quickly overcome on a school ski trip.  A student should feel immensely proud following a school ski trip; no matter what level they have skied at – they are very aware of their achievements! It provides a real boost to their confidence and greater belief in their own ability.

“The highlight of the trip was seeing pupil’s improvement, achievement and enjoyment of skiing…this was the overwhelming feedback from the pupils!” Elisa Morris, Oakhill School, Italy

Nurturing independence.

On a school ski trip a student has no option but to be more independent than they would normally be at home or in school! Managing their own money, venturing into a new resort or nearby town unsupervised and ensuring they have all the necessary clothes and equipment for a day’s skiing. This independence provides them with a taste of adult life!

Improvement of teacher pupil relationships

Many teachers report that their teacher/pupil relationship improves 10 fold whilst out on a ski trip – both parties get to know each other more and in turn this builds trust. This improved relationship is then taken back to the classroom and continues to benefit learning.

Improved Health and Fitness

For anyone who has skied before you know that muscles are discovered in your body that you never knew existed before. It’s a full on day of exercise as you ski all day, topped off with après activities at night! Your muscles are strengthened, your heart rate increases and there is no doubt that sleep comes very easily at night! Students definitely return home fitter! Strength is improved in body and mind!

Learning the lingo!

Want to pick up a few key phrases in another language or put to use some of the language learnt in the classroom! It goes without saying a ski trip provides a great opportunity for students to use the language of the destination they are travelling to!

“The highlight of the trip was seeing the students enjoy their skiing and achieving something they had never done before!” Miss Gemma Bates, Casterton Business and Enterprise College, Italy

The list goes on – but if you needed convincing or reminding we think our blog does the trick!

The King´s Trail

On this 6-day long winter tour you get to experience the true essence of skiing in the Swedish mountains. You will be traveling through deep valleys, over awe-inspiring plateaus, passed deep frozen waters and through mysterious Scandinavian mountain forests. You will be skiing from hut to hut and enjoy the connivance of not having to carry a tent or a sleeping bag. After a long day of skiing you will get to relax in a fire heated sauna and cool down in with a cold dip in the snow. Together with your experienced guide and our small group of maximum 10 you get to prepare delicious dinners over the gas stove in off-grid mountain huts. This is the perfect tour for skiers wishing to experience the true essence of the Swedish mountains while enjoying the convince of living indoors in traditional Swedish off-grid mountain huts.

The King´s Trail is one of Sweden´s most popular mountain trails and have been visited by hikers and skiers from all over the world since the early 1900s. We will ski along the trail´s most southern part from the small mountain village of Ammarnäs to the village of Hemavan. This part of the track is a hidden pearl that summarizes the whole Scandinavian mountain range. The trail offers breath-taking scenery of steep U-shaped valleys, high snow-caped peaks, deep frozen mountain waters, endless plateaus of white open landscape and mysterious Scandinavian mountain forests. Wildlife benefit immensely from this wild and varied landscape.

You will ski with a professional Outdoor Vagabond guide that will share his or hers immense knowledge of the Scandinavian mountains. Your guide will not only keep you safe in rough weathers, but also teach you everything there is to know about the area´s unique nature, history and wildlife.

We believe in smaller groups for greater community. On this tour we have groups of minimum 5 and maximum 10 participants. We all share a common mission and we all help out and do our part in the daily shores at our off-grid mountain huts. Expect laughter, joy and a sense of comradeship to be a highlight of this great journey.

We stay in traditional Swedish off-grid mountain huts. These huts, which are managed by the Swedish Tourism Association, are primitive and cosy. Here we all take part in the duties of gathering water from the nearby mountain stream, chopping firewood and cooking our meals from our delicious menu on gas stoves. After a long day hike you get to sleep comfortably in a nice big bunkbed. In some of these mountain huts you even get enjoy relaxing in a hot fire heated sauna as well as dips in the deep powdery snow. For many participants, experiencing life in these off-grid mountain huts is a highlight in itself.

Enjoy comfortable hotels and three-course dinners before and after the tour. While staying in off-grid mountain huts surely can be an experience, we also do wish to spoil our guests by beginning and ending our tours with nice hotels and delicious hotel meals. All of this included of course.

This tour is suitable for both novice and more experienced skiers. What you need is a fairly good physique and a set of good skiing gear. You do not have to have experience with touring skiis, but some previous experience with cross-country skiing is required. We will ski between 8 to 19 kilometers a day in hilly terrain. Depending on your own personal equipment you will have to carry a backpack weighing between 7-12 kg when we start (see our packing check-list below). At the same time, since you will be traveling with a professional guide you do not need any extensive outdoor knowledge. Our guide will keep you safe and sound even in rough weathers.

We want you to be prepared. Included in the tour is a one-on-one online meeting with one of our Outdoor Vagabond guides. Here you can ask anything you like to help you get prepared for this great journey. Also, read our packing-checklist below and contact our booking department for any further questions.

Day 2 – Via Ammarnäs to Aigert

After a steady breakfast at our hotel it´s time to organize our things and start our 6-day long expedition. A private bus will take us to our starting position in the cozy little village of Ammarnäs. The bus ride is about 3 hours. Once we have arrived we prepare the last things before leaving for our winter expedition along the King´s Trail. Today´s ski is not long but at times with a challening climb. Enjoy spectacular views of the Ammarnäs valley as we ascend above the tree line. Our destination, the off-grid cabin of Aigert, is placed in a spectacular setting. Before preparing our dinner we can enjoy a dip in the snow and relax in a fire-heated sauna.

Today’s skiing: Distance: 8 km Time: 3-4 hours

Day 3 – Ski to Serve

Today is the longest ski of the tour. We start by ascending to a beautiful plateau high above the tree-line. Here, vegetation is sparse and the endless withe landscape spread out infront of us. On the highest point of today´s ski we can take rest at a small shelter at Juovvatjåkka. From here the view is breathtaking! Shortly after Jouvvatjåkka we follow the trail downwards and ascend into a crispy Scandinavian mountain forest. Hidden in the forest next to a fresh mountain stream we find today´s destination – the off-grid cabin of Serve.

Today’s skiing: Distance: 19 km Time: 7-8 hours

Day 4 – Ski to Tärnsjön

Today´s ski continue mainly through the forest. The Scandinavian mountain forests are truly special with their small crooked birch trees and sparkly snowcrystal-cover branches. The area is during summer home to more than 120 species of bird, different types of small rodents, massive moose and of course the Sami reindeers. We travel over frozen waters and through the powdery landscape as the spectacular mountain views lure in distance ahead of us. Our goal for the day is the mountain hut Tärnsjö where we can enjoy a sweaty sauna and a cold dip in the snow.

Today’s skiing: Distance: 14 km Time: 5-6 hours

Day 5 – Ski to Syter

Today we ski along the lake Tärnsjön. Beautiful mountain scenery is all around us and the nearest sign of civilization is a few days march. We enjoy the convince of a marked trail, but here in the outback there is no cell-phone coverage, no roads and no electricity. Today´s destination is the beautifully placed off-grid cabin of Syter. The cabin lies just above the tree-line next to a wild river.

Day 6 – Ski to Viterskalet

Today, on our winter expedition along the King’s Trail, we will continue our ascent above the tree-line and into the huge U-shaped valley Viterskalet. We ski along the frozen water of the Syter-creek and feel completely safe surrounded my the massive steep rock walls. Enjoy listening to your guide explaining how this impressive landscape came to be over a hot cup of tea or coffee. Today´s destination is the off-grid cabin of Viterskalet palced right in the middle of this great valley.

The Lovell family owned and operated their prestigious John F. Kennedy International School and Mountain Lodge Summer Camp in Saanen-Gstaad, Switzerland for over 40 years. In 2011 the family decided to separate the school and summer camp and create Lovell International Camps AG.

Lovell Camps expanded its recreational and learning opportunities by opening up a winter camp program offering a wide variety of winter sport activities for individuals and groups.

The Mountain Lodge has 18 rooms which comfortably sleep 70 persons. All rooms offers en-suite facilities and there is a spacious kitchen and dining room, a large terrace and an outdoor area ( perfect for sledding)! It is outfitted with relaxing lounge areas, multi-purpose movie room, equipment storage area, and complimentary internet access.

The Mountain Lodge is literally some 3 minutes from the ski slopes, clients ferried to and from the slopes by Lovells own fleet of mini buses.

GstaadResort7a.jpg

Gstaad is a paradise for winter activities. 61 cable cars open up 250 kms of slopes, sledge runs, snowparks and winter walks till 3000 meters.

Thanks to the glacier ski area and slopes with artificial snow, Gstaad is able to offer winter sports from the end of October to the beginning of May.

king's school ski trip

Why Gstaad is still Switzerland’s best ski resort

Early-bird skiers begin hitting the slopes at the end of October and the season lasts until the beginning of May. The ski areas  are connected by 61 cable cars, providing access to 250km pistes and cross-country trails, sledge runs, snow parks and winter hiking. The famous Glacier 3,000 is easily accessible and extends the ski season into mid-summer.

Dotted with snow-capped mountains, charming weathered-wood chalets and an unsurprising smattering of fir trees, Gstaad is the epitome of alpine chic. Nestled between Geneva and Zürich, the white powder landscape of Gstaad is famed for its luxurious lifestyle. Gstaad's hypnotic setting has attracted some of the world's most famous faces, from Madonna and Grace Kelly to Julie Andrews and Jacqueline Kennedy.

The Glacier - Environmentally Challenged

From October until May, optimal ski conditions are found here at the winter sports location of Les Diablerets. The slopes in the high alpine landscape are some of the most spectacular in the Switzerland. Some of the highlights in the Glacier 3000 ski resort are the 7 km long Olden slope and the snowpark. The winter sports area of Les Diablerets also offers many additional winter activities as well as a breathtaking panorama at 3000 meters.

The ingredients for this unique peak experience are quite simple: a nice wide path, surrounded by boulders and snow, lots of fresh air – and a stunning view. The walk is a beautiful hike from the Scex Rouge mountain station that leads up to the 3’016m Dôme. It is quite possible that you will hold your breath for a moment, when you get to the top: because when you get to the so-called man of stone, the view onto the glacier, the valleys far below and the Diablerets peak is simply breath-taking. This view is worth every effort! That is why hikers returning from the Dôme are so relaxed – because once on top, they completely forget their worries.

You would be accompanied by your instructors on the walk and when you stop for lunch there will be a discussion on the impact of climate change you will be able to see first hand how this has affected the environment around you.

Peak to Peak

There is only one suspension bridge in the world that connects two mountain peaks and it can be found at Glacier 3000. This 107 metre long bridge links together the small peak (View Point) and the 5 metre higher main peak (Scex Rouge) and offers stunning views onto the Alps: Matterhorn, Mont Blanc, Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau which are visible from the bridge.

Trips, fieldwork, and expeditions provide such enormous benefits to our pupils, so our co-curricular programme includes a diverse range of trips and expeditions to ensure that all pupils have the opportunity to experience memorable educational visits and excursions.

Modern foreign language trips and exchanges are an intrinsic part of the cultural experiences we offer our pupils. Opportunities abound, with annual Spanish, French and German exchanges. Our Sixth Form linguists are also strongly encouraged to immerse themselves in foreign culture and language for two to three weeks as part of their studies.

Sixth Form Classics trips are run to a range of museums and every two years we run a week-long trip to Italy, visiting Pompeii, Herculaneum, Ostia, and Rome.

The trips organised by the Art Department form an important part of our critical and contextual studies programme. GCSE pupils spend five days in St Ives, Cornwall where they visit the Tate Gallery, smaller galleries, and artists’ studios. A level pupils have the opportunity to visit galleries throughout the UK and in European cities such as Paris, Nice, Barcelona, and Amsterdam, as well as further afield.

The Departments of History and Politics encourage pupils to participate in a wide range of trips that offer them a more interactive experience. We off a Year 7 trip to Goodrich Castle and a Year 9 trip to the First World War battlefields of Belgium and Northern France. In the Sixth Form we extend our offering to include a French Revolution trip to Paris and an overnight stay in London for a History and Politics trip where we visit the Houses of Parliament, the Churchill War Rooms and take a walking tour of our historic capital.

A biennial Music tour, involving the School Choir and Chamber Orchestra, is offered and our Drama Department runs an annual theatre residential trip in London. Theatre trips are organised by our English and Drama Departments, and we run a lively programme of Arts visits in conjunction with Arts Award.

Our Physics Department runs a biennial trip to CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research and, along with our Biology and Chemistry Departments, arranges enrichment and extension trips and visits through the year.

I want to rent the gears at the place. Can anyone help to provide some advice about skiing and skating in Moscow?

There are lots of outdoor skating rinks during the winter - in Red square, in Gorky park, in Sokolniki park to name a few. All of these are close to metro stations. And I think (but i'm not 100% sure) that all of these offer skates for rent.

Thanks a lot for your information!

Marassa: thanks for sharing the linkage. However, it is in Russian. Is there any in English?

Katri0na: Are those skating places suitable for super beginner, like me?

king's school ski trip

LONDON (AP) — King Charles III returned to public duties on Tuesday, visiting a cancer treatment charity and beginning his carefully managed comeback after the monarch’s own cancer diagnosis sidelined him for three months.

The event marks the king’s first formal public engagement since Feb. 6, when Buckingham Palace announced that he would be taking a break from public duties to focus on his treatment for an undisclosed type of cancer.

It will be the first of several public appearances Charles will make in the coming weeks as he prepares to host a state visit by the emperor and empress of Japan in June.

It is unclear how many of the summer’s traditional royal events, including the king’s formal birthday parade and the horse racing at Royal Ascot, Charles will attend as his treatment continues. The palace said last week that doctors were “very encouraged” by the king’s progress, but his schedule would be adjusted as needed to protect his recovery.

For now, Tuesday’s appearance gives Charles another opportunity to raise awareness of the benefits of early diagnosis and treatment of cancer and other health problems as he has done throughout his illness.

Unlike most royals before him, Charles chose to publicly disclose details about his health when he first underwent treatment for an enlarged prostate and later when he was diagnosed with cancer. The decision raised awareness of these issues.

The National Health Service in England said the number of people seeking advice about prostate problems increased 11-fold in the weeks after Charles’ announced he was undergoing treatment.
