KLM to serve more US destinations this winter

Thanks to the recent easing of travel restrictions, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines will be allowed to operate additional services to destinations in the United States this winter. The US recently announced that, from the start of November, vaccinated travellers from the EU and UK would be granted access to the US. The Dutch government also decided to withdraw previously announced quarantine regulations for vaccinated travellers from the United States. Earlier, KLM had been forced to cancel flights due to these regulations.

The easing of restrictions prompted KLM’s decision to resume service to Las Vegas and Miami from 7 December. Passengers to these destinations, who were previously rebooked, can contact KLM for a free rebooking to these direct flights.

KLM previously announced that it would expand its winter schedule with services to four new destinations: Cancun (Mexico), Port of Spain (Trinidad & Tobago), Bridgetown (Barbados) and Mombasa (Kenya).

Network strategy Restoring a global network of destinations is the focal point of KLM’s strategy to emerge from the coronavirus crisis as a stronger and more competitive airline. From the start of the coronavirus pandemic, KLM has maintained as much of its network as possible. This ensured that passengers could continue to make (essential) trips and that cargo, including medical goods and vaccines, could be transported. This strategy was of great benefit to KLM during the pandemic and now makes it easier to scale up operations. KLM will continue to insist on greater consistency in policy on travel restrictions.

Flight schedules KLM’s flight schedules to Miami and Las Vegas from 6 December 2021 will be as follows:

*arrival the next day

KLM offers excellent hygiene, flexible booking, high customer ratings KLM flies passengers to their destination with all due care and caution. KLM has adopted the very highest hygiene standards, before, during and after the flight, earning Diamond Status from the APEX research institute. This makes KLM an industry trend-setter in terms of hygiene and health safety. Moreover, KLM offers customers maximum flexibility when it comes to booking, rebooking or cancelling their trip. KLM also earned the maximum five-star score from APEX, based on passenger scores for our service and product.

KLM, which is known for being the flag carrier of the Netherlands, is one of the world’s oldest airlines. With a history dating back to 1919, KLM is an essential component connecting the United States with Europe.

KLM has a diverse network of flights to Amsterdam, and keeping track of them can be difficult. Even more difficult is keeping track of which aircraft is flown to each U.S. city. Luckily, we have your back with this definitive guide to KLM U.S. routes.

KLM merged with Air France, which is why they share a variety of things, including the frequent flyer program Flying Blue .

We’ve got quite a bit of ground to cover, so let’s get started.

Update: Due to COVID-19, KLM may temporarily suspend routes, frequencies, and/or aircraft flown. Please check with the airline directly for the most current information.

KLM has tons of different routes. Additionally, KLM operates a variety of aircraft, and they can be inconsistent at times.

Check out the chart below to get an idea of KLM’s routes, aircraft flown, and flight frequencies:

Before we get into the nitty-gritty of KLM’s aircraft and routes, let’s discuss the best points to earn to fly KLM.

KLM is a SkyTeam airline, so you should focus on earning miles from SkyTeam partners if you’re planning on flying KLM.

Without a doubt, your best option is using Korean Air SKYPASS miles . Round-trip flights in business class are 80,000 Korean Air miles while a round trip economy ticket is only 50,000 miles. Keep in mind that you’ll be responsible for carrier-imposed surcharges when using Korean Air SKYPASS .

Other options include Air France/KLM Flying Blue , Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan , Delta SkyMiles , and Malaysia Airlines Enrich miles .

  • Chase Ultimate Rewards is transfer partners with Air France/KLM Flying Blue.
  • American Express Membership Rewards is transfer partners with Delta SkyMiles and Air France/KLM Flying Blue.
  • Citi ThankYou Rewards is transfer partners with Air France/KLM Flying Blue and Malaysia Airlines Enrich.
  • Capital One Miles is transfer partners with Air France/KLM Flying Blue.
  • Marriott Bonvoy is transfer partners with Korean Air SKYPASS, Air France/KLM Flying Blue, Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan, and Delta SkyMiles.

Unfortunately, KLM doesn’t offer any first class seat options on their flights between the Netherlands and the United States.

KLM Business Class Options

KLM 787 Business Class forward view

KLM operates a host of different business class products. These business class products range from the new reverse herringbone seats on the 787-900 to old angle-flat seats on the A330-300. Picking the right plane to fly on in business class is supremely important, especially when flying on KLM.

KLM’s business class product consists primarily of warm Dutch hospitality, underwhelming food, and an inconsistent hard product.

KLM is currently in the process of modernizing their business class seats and fitting in newer seats, though it has been painfully slow. Choosing the right seats and aircraft on KLM’s business class will go an extremely long way.

Without further ado, here’s our business class ranking from best to worst:

KLM’s winner in business class goes to the 787-900. The 787-900 has the best hard product by far. The business class seats are reverse herringbone seats, fully lie-flat, and feature direct aisle access.

The seats are 20.25 inches wide and 42 inches in pitch. When fully reclined, the seats become 77 inches in bed length. While these seats aren’t the largest and most spacious seats you’ll find, they’re extremely private and technologically advanced.

There are a total of 30 flat-bed seats in a 1-2-1 configuration as shown here:

KLM 787-900 Business Class Seat Map

Some don’t like the idea of sitting at the back of the business class cabin. However, since the lavatories are located at the front starboard section of the aircraft, there will be a lot of front-moving foot traffic, which can impede your experience if you’re sitting near the front.

The best seats will be in row 8 . Solo travelers should pick window seats, whereas couples traveling together should pick the middle seats.

Here are the routes on which the KLM 787-900 is flown between the United States and the Netherlands:

  • San Francisco (SFO) – Amsterdam (AMS)
  • Houston (IAH) – Amsterdam (AMS) mostly
  • Minneapolis (MSP) – Amsterdam (AMS)
  • Atlanta (ATL) – Amsterdam (AMS) sometimes
  • Washington D.C. (IAD) – Amsterdam (AMS) sometimes
  • New York City (JFK) – Amsterdam (AMS) sometimes

Our next product is the 747-400 business class on KLM. These seats are notably different and significantly less private. Although all 35 seats are still fully lie-flat, you’ll notice that not all seats have direct aisle access.

Still, it’s a great second choice when compared to the new 787-900 reverse herringbone above.

The seat map is interesting, to say the least. The KLM 747-400 is actually a combination cargo and passenger aircraft , meaning a portion of the plane seats passengers while the other portion carries cargo, creating an interesting layout.

KLM’s 747-400 business class seats are each 20 inches wide, 63 inches in pitch, and 80 inches in bed length. Here’s what the upper and lower decks look like in business class, respectively:

KLM 747-400 Business Class Seat Map Upper Deck

The seats on the upper deck are arranged in a 2-2 configuration, whereas the seats on the lower deck are either arranged in a 2-2 or 1-2 configuration.

As you can probably imagine, the best seats are going to be as far from the lavatories as possible. The best seat is 1A, followed by 4A , due to the ultra-private positioning of the seats. Since the seat is by itself, nobody will be stepping around or over you to use the lavatories.

Furthermore, 1A is fantastic because it’s at the front of the aircraft, and nothing else is in front of you. It truly generates that private jet vibe.

You can find this KLM 747-400 business class layout on the following routes between the United States and the Netherlands:

  • Los Angeles (LAX) – Amsterdam (AMS)
  • Chicago (ORD) – Amsterdam (AMS)
  • New York City (JFK) – Amsterdam (AMS) mostly on KL 644

KLM’s 777-200 is one of their older aircraft. The business class seats are the same exact design as on the 747-400, only with a denser seat configuration. The seats are 20 inches wide, 63 inches in pitch, and 80 inches in bed mode.

KLM recently retrofitted their 777-200 with new business class seats, though they’re still not as nice as the 787-900 we discussed above.

The 34 business class seats are configured in a 2-2-2 arrangement as shown here:

KLM 777-200 Business Class Seat Map

There are 5 rows of seats in the main business class section, and there’s 1 row of seats at the back of the business class cabin, behind the lavatory and galleys.

We believe that the best seats are in 6H, 6K, 4H, or 4K . The reason 6H and 6K are at the top of our list is because this row of seats is very private. Furthermore, the lavatory is on the opposite side of the plane, causing less disturbance for you. The only issue may be the galleys, which is not much of an issue at all.

4H and 4K are great alternative choices because they’re in the back of the main business class cabin and very far away from the forward lavatories.

You can find this 777-200 business class seating arrangement on the following KLM U.S. flights to Amsterdam:

  • Houston (IAH) – Amsterdam (AMS) sometimes
  • Atlanta (ATL) – Amsterdam (AMS) mostly

Our last business class product goes to KLM’s A330-300. This particular aircraft falls in last place due to the unfavorable business class configurations and design.

The 30 business class seats are all angle-flat  and arranged in a 2-2-2 configuration. The seat is 20.25 inches wide, 60 inches in pitch, and 78 inches in bed length.

There are 5 rows of business class seats as shown below:

KLM A330-300 Business Class Seat Map

As you can see, the lavatories are located in the front section of the business class cabin, which means savvy travelers ought to avoid sitting at the front.

The best seats in business class are rows 4 or 5 due to the distance from the lavatories. For couples traveling together, the best seats for direct-aisle access will be in the center aisle.

Solo travelers may want to pick window seats for extra privacy, though the main concern is the lack of direct aisle access.

You’ll find these angle-flat business class seats on the following routes to and from the United States on KLM:

  • Miami (MIA) – Amsterdam (AMS)
  • Washington D.C. (IAD) – Amsterdam (AMS) mostly
  • New York City (JFK) – Amsterdam (AMS) on KL 642

KLM Premium Economy Class Options

Now that we’ve talked extensively about the various business class products on KLM, let’s talk about their premium economy products.

KLM calls their premium economy  Economy Comfort . KLM’s premium economy seats are very similar to their regular economy seats, their only benefit is an additional 4 inches in seat pitch.

There are a lot of different nuances to premium economy layouts, so let’s begin with our rankings:

The first place premium economy product on KLM is the 787-900. The 787-900 is a technologically advanced and efficient aircraft. The climate control systems and in-flight noise isolation make for a comfortable flight.

Furthermore, KLM’s premium economy on the 787-900 has a few preferential seats that will make for an extra comfortable flight.

There are 48 premium economy seats arranged in a 3-3-3 configuration. Each seat is 17.5 inches wide and 35 inches in pitch. The seat width is rather narrow, as the industry average is approximately 19 inches wide and 38 inches in pitch.

This further supports the assertion that KLM’s premium economy seats are similar to economy plus seats on U.S. domestic flights, which are just economy seats with more legroom.

The seat map looks like this:

KLM 787-900 Premium Economy Class Seat Map

Another reason why KLM’s 787-900 has the best premium economy seating is because there are no lavatories located near the premium economy section.

The best seats are in row 10.  These seats are located near galleys, but it’s a non-issue for those who want as much room as possible.

You can find the 787-900 on these following routes between the United States and the Netherlands:

The next winner is a not-so-apparent choice: the A330-300 . The A330-300, though not as quiet and comfortable as the 787-900, still has an awesome premium economy seat map.

Each of the 40 premium economy seats on KLM’s A330-300 is 17.5 inches wide and 35 inches in pitch, which is identical to the 787-900. The lavatories are located far away, and the seating arrangement is in a 2-4-2 configuration.

This 2-4-2 configuration is advantageous for couples traveling together, as they can have an entire row to themselves. Check out the following seat map to get a better idea of what the A330-300 premium economy class seat layout looks like:

KLM A330-300 Premium Economy Class Seat Map

The best seats will be in row 10 . Couples traveling together will want to snatch a pair of seats side-by-side, either 10A/B or 10H/J.

You can find the A330-300 operated by KLM on the following routes to and from the United States:

KLM’s 747-400 has one of the oddest premium economy layouts. The seats are exactly the same size as the previous options, 17.5 inches wide and 35 inches in pitch.

There are a total of 36 seats arranged as follows:

KLM 747-400 Premium Economy Class Seat Map

The best seats are 9B and 9C . These have unlimited legroom, and the seats are free from the exit row protrusion at 9A.

You can find the 747-400 flown by KLM on the following routes between the Netherlands and the United States:

Our last-place winner goes to the 777-200. The 777-200 is one of the older aircraft in KLM’s fleet. There are no preferential seats on this plane, but there are a few seats to avoid.

As for the seat layout, the 777-200 contains a premium economy cabin of 40 seats arranged across 4 rows in a 3-4-3 configuration:

KLM 777-200 Premium Economy Class Seat Map

Although there are no lavatories or galleys located near this section, this also means that are no seats with extra legroom. As well, the window seats in row 11 are actually missing a window, so you’ll want to avoid those seats.

You’ll also want to avoid row 10 due to the lack of floor storage. I would personally choose row 12 window seats because they have decent privacy and aren’t too close to the economy cabin.

You can find the 777-200 operated by KLM on these routes to and from the United States:

KLM Economy Class Options

KLM 747 Economy

KLM’s economy class has very little distinguishing economy product in one plane from the next. That being said, we’ll be discussing the various seating arrangements and preferential seat choices.

Our KLM economy class rankings are as follows:

Believe it or not, KLM’s smallest economy class cabin on their U.S. flights is on the 747-400, which is one of the largest commercial airplanes in the world.

The reason the economy section is so small is because KLM actually combines cargo and passenger aircraft on the 747-400. Some of the space that would normally have been dedicated to economy seats is taken up by a cargo hold, which is an interesting configuration.

The economy seats are each 17.5 inches wide and 31 inches in pitch. These seats are nothing special, and they’re actually around average size. The seats are arranged in a 3-4-3 configuration at the lower deck of the 747-400.

The 197-seat economy class cabin looks like this:

KLM 747-400 Economy Class Seat Map

The best seats in this configuration are in rows 21 or 35 . There’s an unlimited amount of extra legroom, though the distance to the lavatories may be unnerving to some. The best seats for those who can reserve them are 21B/C since they’re on the opposite side of the lavatory.

If you can’t reserve 21B/C, the next best is 35B/C or 35H/J. If all of those seats are taken, the next best seats are 21H/J, but they’re right next to the lavatories.

Find this exact 747-400 economy seating configuration on the following non-stop KLM routes to Amsterdam:

  • New York City (JFK) – Amsterdam (AMS)  mostly on KL 644

Our next place winner is the 777-200 economy class cabin. There are 242 economy class seats spread out in a 3-4-3 configuration. Each seat is 17.5 inches wide and 31 inches in pitch, which is the status quo for all of KLM’s long-haul economy seats.

The seat map looks as follows:

KLM 777-200 Economy Class Seat Map

In this case, the best seats are 31H/J, followed by 31B/C. The reason why 31H/J is slightly better than 31B/C is because the second lavatory in the area is located on the left or port side. As a result, the port side will see more foot traffic.

You can find this seat layout on the following KLM non-stop routes between the Netherlands and the United States:

The next best economy seats are on KLM’s A330-300. There are a total of 222 economy seats arranged in a 2-4-2 configuration. The seats are the same size as on the other KLM flights, 17.5 inches wide and 31 inches in pitch.

Here’s what the seat map looks like:

KLM A330-300 Economy Class Seat Map

The best seats are 31A/B, followed by 30H. 30J has a protrusion due to the exit row, which can severely hinder your leg movement.

You can find these seats flown on KLM’s non-stop routes between the United States and the Netherlands.

  • Miami (MIA) –  Amsterdam (AMS)

Our next choice is the 787-900, which is KLM’s newest aircraft. There are 216 economy class seats spread out in a 3-3-3 arrangement. The seats are 17.5 inches wide and 31 inches in pitch, which are the same dimensions as all KLM economy seats.

KLM 787-900 Economy Class Seat Map

The best seats are the exit row seats at row 30. Remember to avoid the A and K seats in exit rows due to the protrusion of the exit row door into your feet’s space.

Another aspect to keep in mind is the proximity to the lavatories. Since 4 out of the 5 lavatories are located near row 30, you’ll want to consider the possible disturbance of the lavatories before reserving row 30 seats.

The 787-900 is our last choice for economy class on KLM because the exit row seats, which are ordinarily the most preferential seats, are right next to 4 lavatories, which is unfortunate.

You can find the 787-900 on the following non-stop routes flown by KLM:

KLM has a lot of different in-flight products, especially in business class. When you’re flying in business class, be sure to do everything in your power to experience the 787-900. The new reverse herringbone seats with direct-aisle access is simply a step above all the other business class seats from KLM.

There’s less distinction between the premium economy and economy class products than the business class products, so much of the guide was focused on the best seats to reserve on each aircraft.

Now, you have plenty of information to begin planning your flights on KLM!

Travel to and from the USA

When you travel to, via, or from the United States, you might need extra documents or add more information. Here’s all you need to know and arrange.

The Visa Waiver Programme allows citizens of specific countries to travel visa-free to the United States. Instead of a visa, you will have to apply for an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation).

Check which countries participate in the Visa Waiver Programme

Requesting ESTA

If you need an ESTA, you can choose to let our partner Sherpa take care of everything for you at a fee. Or you can organise it yourself via the US Customs and Border Protection website.

Make sure to apply for an ESTA at least 72 hours before departure. After this, there may not be enough time to process your application.

When applying for an ESTA, please enter the information exactly as stated in your passport. If you have a new passport or your previous ESTA has expired, you’ll need to apply for a new ESTA. After approval, you’ll receive a reference number. ESTA authorisation remains valid for 2 years.

Mobile Passport Control app

If you are an American or Canadian citizen, or a returning ESTA holder, you can expedite your passage through US customs using the free and secure Mobile Passport Control (MPC) app. By successfully utilizing this app, there is no longer a requirement for filling out paper forms or use an APC kiosk, making your process faster and more efficient.

Arrange visa

If you need to arrange a visa, our partner Sherpa can take care of your application at a fee. Or you can organise it yourself via the applicable authorities. To check in online via KLM.com, your travel documents (visa or otherwise) must be complete.

Secure Flight programme

The Secure Flight programme of the United States government requires airlines to register some personal data when you book your flight. This includes your gender, date of birth, and your first and family name exactly as stated in your passport. We are required to pass this information of all our passengers to the United States Transportation Security Administration (TSA) at least 72 hours before departure.

TSA PreCheck

Travelling from or within the USA? You can participate in the PreCheck programme of the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA). You’ll still have to undergo a quick security check but don’t need to remove your electronic devices, liquids, shoes, belt, and light jackets.

When you’re accepted to the programme, make sure to add your TSA Known Traveller Number via My Trip. The TSA PreCheck logo or the text “TSA PRE” will appear on your boarding pass.

Economy 101: Should I fly KLM or Air France?

air-france-klm-plane

Often, a stopover is the perfect way to score a low-cost ticket in economy class. For example, flying to Asia directly from London will easily cost you £600 ($751) or more, but flying with a stopover can bring the ticket price down to £300 ($376). Two of the U.K.'s favorite airlines to use for a stopover are KLM, with a stop at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS), and Air France, with a stopover at Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG). The airlines work together so closely that they will often share not just codeshares, but also fare bases. This means you can choose between KLM and Air France around the same price point. Which one is better, though? Let's take a look.

Earning miles

If you are a TPG reader, you will probably guess why this point is at the top of the list — you fly to earn miles! (Okay, maybe also to get to your destination. And a little bit of plane spotting, maybe?)

Conveniently, for Air France and KLM, the earning possibilities are very similar. Your best bet is to credit to the shared Flying Blue program , which often gives you the most miles. Keep in mind though, that mileage earning is based on revenue in this mileage program. If you are flying a long-distance itinerary that you got at an unbelievably low price, it might be more lucrative to credit to a partner, like Delta. There are some minor differences between KLM and Air France earning at partner airlines. For example, Air France flights can still be credited to China Southern (CZ), despite the fact that the airline recently left the SkyTeam alliance. KLM offers crediting to COPA. Check out the table below, comparing earning possibilities for the V fare bucket, the most-occurring type of discounted economy (courtesy of WhereToCredit).

KLM has a considerably newer fleet than Air France. The KLM and KLM Cityhopper combination have an average fleet age of 10.2 years, while Air France's fleet is an average of 13.8 years old. In comparison, British Airways' fleet is also an average of 13.8 years old, according to Airfleets.net.

klm travel to us

The KLM fleet is loaded with Boeing and Embraer jets, while Air France mainly operates Airbus airplanes. Not surprising, since the most important Airbus facilities are located in France. On KLM, you can still fly the Queen of the Skies , whereas on Air France you might get an A380 .

KLM tends to have modern, slimline seating with up-to-date in flight entertainment, while Air France mostly has older seats offering a bit more padding and space, with outdated IFE systems. Here's a comparative list of KLM and Air France planes with their respective seat sizes in inches:

klm travel to us

That said, Air France is quickly updating its fleet with the addition of Airbus A350 aircraft — the first of which it took delivery of in September .

Stopover airport

Both stopover airports are among the five largest in Europe, so there is no shortage of entertainment or options in the food and beverage department. Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is considered to be an easy transfer airport because of the single-terminal concept: no matter where you arrive, you can always simply walk to your next gate. For Paris Charles de Gaulle, this is a little bit more complicated. There are lots of terminals, linked by buses, meaning you need more transfer time — unless you leave from the same terminal you arrive at. With passport checks sometimes in between gates, that means unpredictable transfers. For that reason, travelers generally like transferring in Amsterdam better.

klm travel to us

If you hold status with Flying Blue, you might have complimentary access to the airline lounges. Amsterdam has a rather large single KLM lounge that offers great tarmac views and quality food options. Paris Charles de Gaulle has multiple terminals and therefore multiple Air France lounges, which are all quite comparable. The lounges at CDG tend to offer slightly larger buffets and more diverse food, while the KLM lounge has better views and a more modern feel.

Onboard service

klm travel to us

There is a noticeable difference between KLM and Air France in terms of onboard service. KLM service is clean and efficient, while Air France leans more toward traditional hospitality. Neither is good or bad. The KLM food service is fast and without bells and whistles, while Air France service will offer a menu, Champagne and more elaborate table setting. It's all minor differences, but based on what suits you best, you might like one more than the other.

Bottom line

Depending on your preferences, you'll find a flight with KLM or Air France in economy to be the more attractive option. Both carriers have upsides and downsides to their service, fleet, onboard offering and more. Be sure to do your research before booking, such as catching up on TPG reviews of both products.

10 oldest airlines in the world

Editor’s Note: Sign up for Unlocking the World , CNN Travel’s weekly newsletter. Get the latest news in aviation, food and drink, where to stay and other travel developments.

The aviation industry might be known for its volatility and financial instability, particularly in recent years, but a surprising number of airlines from the pioneering early days of commercial flight are still surviving in their original form.

Finnish flag carrier Finnair celebrates its 100th anniversary on November 1, having been founded in 1923 as a seaplane service, while the Czech Republic’s flag carrier Czech Airlines made its first flight just a few days earlier in October 2023.

Here are 10 of the oldest airlines in the world still in operation.

Year of foundation: 1919

First flight: May 1920

Passengers transported in the first year: 440

Passengers transported in 2022: 25.8 million

As a nation that once had the largest merchant fleet in the world, it seems fitting that the Dutch were among the first to set up a national airline that became a strong force to be reckoned with.

The need to connect Amsterdam to what was then known as the Dutch East Indies would certainly have been a powerful motivation to get KLM off the ground in the early days.

Although formally founded in October 1919, the new airline did not really take off until May 1920, when a four-seater De Havilland DH.16 made the inaugural flight to London’s now defunct Croydon Airport.

In 1924, KLM launched a service from Amsterdam to Batavia (as Jakarta was then known), the world’s longest air route at the time.

In 1946, it became the first European airline to begin scheduled flights to New York, using DC-4 aircraft.

Throughout its century and more of existence, KLM’s commitment to innovation has been constant.

This doesn’t just apply to its fleet either. The airline has also proved pioneering with its use of social media, introducing the first social media-driven flight schedule.

First flight: 1919

Passengers transported in 2022 : 24.6 million

Founded by German immigrants in Barranquilla, Colombia, in 1919, Avianca was originally named SCADTA and operated Junkers F13 aircraft, some of which were equipped with floats.

As the world moved closer to war In the late 1930s, SCADTA became a source of concern for the US government, who were worried about the security implications of the airline’s links to Germany.

Pan American World Airways subsequently acquired a controlling stake in the company.

In 1949, SCADTA merged with fellow Colombian airline SACO (Servicio Aéreo Colombiano) and adopted its current name.

Today, after absorbing several airlines in neighboring countries, Avianca is one of the largest airline groups in Latin America, with a fleet of more than 130 aircraft and a network of subsidiaries that spans pretty much the whole continent.

Year of foundation: 1920

Passengers transported in 2022 : 21.3 million

Few people outside of Australia know that Qantas stands for “Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services.”

As its name indicates, the initial goal of the airline was to service the tropical and sparsely populated lands of Northern Australia.

Its first aircraft was an Avro 504, a pre-World War I biplane that could seat a pilot and one passenger.

Qantas was nationalized by the Australian government after World War II and reprivatized in the ’90s.

Its kangaroo livery first appeared in 1944 and accompanied the airline during the airline’s expansion throughout the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.

Today Qantas remains the de facto flag carrier of Australia as well as the country’s largest airline and one of its best known brands globally.

4. Aeroflot

Year of foundation: 1923

First flight: July 1923

Passengers transported in 2022: 20.5 million

A flight from Moscow to Nizhny Novgorod carrying six people (four passengers and two crewmen) on a Junkers F13 marked the start of what would turn out to be the Soviet Union’s, and later, the Russian Federation’s flag carrier.

Originally called Dobrolet, it was renamed Aeroflot in 1932, when the Soviet government decided to place the whole civilian aviation fleet under one single entity.

After World War II, Aeroflot became the largest airline in the world, as air travel was often the only means of transportation available to bridge the vast expanses of the Soviet Union.

In 1956, the airline introduced the Tupolev Tu-104, considered the first truly successful jet airliner.

During the Cold War years, Aeroflot operated the long range Il-62, which flew all the way to Cuba by way of Murmansk, in the Arctic, and the supersonic Tupolev Tu-144, the Soviet Union’s answer to the Concorde.

In much the same fashion as the Soviet Union, Aeroflot was separated in the ’90s and divided into a number of regional airlines, with some former Soviet republics beginning their own services.

The core of the airline then came under control of Russia and remains state-owned.

Aeroflot underwent a massive transformation during the first decade of the 21st century in terms of both service and fleet.

Bar its hammer and sickle logo, the Aeroflot of today bears little resemblance to its original conception.

5. Czech Airlines (CSA)

First flight: October 1923

Passengers transported in 2022 : No data

Started as a national airline for the then newly founded country of Czechoslovakia, Czech Airlines’ activity was interrupted by World War II and the airline was later reinstated by the post-war Communist government.

In 1957, CSA became the third airline, after BOAC and Aeroflot, to operate jet airliners when it put the Soviet-made Tupolev Tu104A into service.

The airline was also the first to operate a jet-only connection: Prague to Moscow.

During the Cold War years, CSA operated a remarkably large operation that included a fleet of up to 21 long range Ilyushin Il-62 aircraft as well as an extensive route network covering the Americas, Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

Unfortunately it also suffered two unfortunate firsts, becoming the first airline to suffer a mass hijacking, when three of its aircraft were diverted to West Germany by defectors in 1950.

It was also the first airline to lose a captain at the hands of a hijacker, in an incident during the 1970s.

Like many national airlines of the former Eastern Bloc, CSA was renamed, restructured and modernized during the ’90s.

The airline has scraped through to its 100th anniversary after being declared bankrupt in 2021, having been hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic. It’s now gone through a reorganization process with a new investor, Prague City Air.

First flight: March 1924

Passengers transported in 2022: 9.1 million

For those who’ve ever wondered why Finnair’s airline code is “AY”, this is derived from the name it used before being rebranded to Finnair in 1953 – “Aero O/Y.”

During its first 12 years, the airline operated only seaplanes, a logical choice given the many lakes and water inlets that cover the surface of Finland.

In 1983, it became the first European airline to fly non-stop to Tokyo, with DC-10 aircraft.

Five years later, Finnair was the only European airline with a direct flight between Europe and China.

This helped to position the airline as the shortest gateway between Europe and Asia, largely thanks to Helsinki’s location atop the Great Circle route.

7. Delta Air Lines

Year of foundation: 1924

Passengers transported in 2022: 141.6 million

Delta has grown from a small crop-dusting operation in America’s Deep South to the largest airline in the world by some measures.

Two important corporate decisions helped consolidate it at the top of the global airline leagues – the purchase of Pan Am’s East Coast and European routes in the early ’90s and its merger with Northwest Airlines in 2008.

Delta is one of the world’s largest airlines in terms of scheduled passengers.

8. Air Serbia

Year of foundation: 1927

Passengers transported in 2022: 2.7 million

Air Serbia claims descent from the several airlines that operated as flag carriers of Yugoslavia (hence its code JU), starting with Aeroput in 1927 and Jat Airways from 1948.

During the Cold War years, Jat developed a significant route network and bought equipment from both East and West, in line with Yugoslavia’s status as a non-aligned country.

After the breakup of Yugoslavia, Jat became the Serbian flag carrier.

In 2013, Etihad bought a 49% equity stake in the company, which then engaged in a massive recapitalization and rebranding operation that saw it adopt the new name of Air Serbia.

First flight: December 1927

Passengers transported in 2022: No data

Formerly a privately owned company, Iberia was put under government sponsorship shortly after its launch, providing postal transport between Madrid and Barcelona.

After an operational hiatus in the early 1930s, it was resurrected with German assistance, by the nationalist side during the Spanish Civil War.

After the war, Iberia, now firmly in government hands, developed as Spain’s flag carrier.

In 1946, it was the first airline to fly between Europe and South America, a region that has remained at the core of Iberia’s long haul business throughout its history.

The airline was privatized in 2001 and it merged with British Airways in 2010 to create the International Airlines Group.

10. British Airways

Year of foundation: 1919 (or 1974)

First flight: August 1919 (or 1974)

Passengers transported in 2018: 44.1 million

Now this one is a little controversial.

The UK flag carrier British Airways was formed 45 years ago following the merger of four companies: British Overseas Airways Corporation, British European Airways, Cambrian Airways and Northeast Airlines.

However, it celebrated ts centenary in 2019 based on the 100 years of achievement of its predecessor airlines.

It all began, says British Airways, on August 25, 1919, when the world’s first scheduled international flight between London and Paris took off with one passenger, plus some Devonshire cream and some grouse.

It was the beginning, not just of British Airways, but of international commercial aviation.

Many airlines have 'stopover' programs that let travelers tour a city between connecting flights, and some will even pay for a hotel — here's how to book them

  • Many people intentionally book flights with long connections so they can explore the layover city.
  • Airlines capitalize on this trend with "stopover" programs, some even offering free hotels and food.
  • These stopovers benefit travelers, airlines, and the carrier's home country by boosting tourism.

Insider Today

A special segment of adventurous travelers will purposely book itineraries with long connections in layover cities just to leave the airport and explore for a few hours or days between flights.

Airlines have jumped on this growing trend with built-in "stopover" programs, which can come with free or discounted hotels, excursions, transportation, and food at the layover destination.

It's basically a vacation within a vacation.

Although it sounds too good to be true, stopovers benefit everyone involved. Travelers get more choices and don't have to be confined to an airport, airlines gain customers who may have otherwise chosen a nonstop option on a competitor, and the carrier's home country sees a boost in tourism.

Plus, the cheap or complimentary accommodations typically come at a small cost to airlines, thanks to partnerships with local hotels or tour companies.

Not all stopover programs are structured with an emphasis on tourism, though, as some were created simply to offer conveniences during long layovers. Still, they are a way to secure a free hotel and explore an extra city.

Here are 22 global airline stopover programs, each lasting anywhere from hours to months.

Many carriers allow stopovers to be added to a regular cash booking, but some are only available via award tickets . This means the flight was paid for using points/miles or a combination of points/miles and cash.

Air Canada has a stopover option built into its Aeroplan loyalty program. It allows customers booking award flights to add a stop on international journeys and explore practically any city the airline flies to outside the US and Canada.

The add-on costs 5,000 Aeroplan points each way and can only be booked if the stop is at least 24 hours, capping out at 45 days.

Air France/KLM

Air France and Dutch carrier KLM's Flying Blue loyalty program offers a stopover of 24 hours or more in a connecting city on either carrier or their airline partners.

The option is free to add to award tickets, and passengers can stay up to a year in the stopover city.

China Southern Airlines

China Southern Airlines offers a free one-night hotel stay for transfer passengers with connection times lasting between six and 30 hours, though there are some time and route restrictions.

Breakfast and transportation are included for eligible travelers.

Copa Airlines

Copa Airlines' Panama stopover program allows customers to spend anywhere from 24 hours to seven days in the nation's capital, Panama City, on their outbound or return trip.

The option is free for the first stopover, but a second stopover can cost up to $250 plus taxes. Copa offers discounted hotels and tours that can be booked via its stopover website.

Emirates allows a stopover in Dubai with the option to add discounted tours or hotel bookings to the itinerary via its website.

The UAE carrier also has a " Dubai Connect " program that gives passengers with layovers between 6 and 26 hours, depending on the cabin, a complimentary hotel, transfers, meals, and any needed visa.

Dubai Connect only triggers if the customer takes the next available flight. Essentially, you can't intentionally book a longer layover to quality for the free stopover hotel.

Ethiopian Airlines

Ethiopian Airlines' transit program gives customers flying via Addis Ababa a free hotel, transit visa, and transfers during layovers lasting between eight and 24 hours.

The hotel on the airline's website is the Ethiopian Skylight In-Terminal Hotel, located inside the airport.

Etihad Airways

Etihad Airways offers a stopover in its Abu Dhabi hub, which comes with an undisclosed discount at select three-star hotels for up to two nights.

Two and four-night stays can be booked at more luxurious four and five-star hotels at a 40% discount. The minimum stay is 24 hours.

Although Etihad's website says it is temporarily unavailable, the airline used to allow eligible travelers to use a so-called Transit Connect Package that provided a free hotel near the airport for layovers lasting 10 to 24 hours. It is unclear when or if the program is returning.

KLM will fly to and from Israel again on Wednesday despite Iran attack

Dutch airline KLM will begin flying to and from Tel Aviv, Israel again starting on Wednesday, the airline confirmed. KLM cancelled all flights involving the city after Iran launched an attack on Israel using missiles and unmanned drones more than a week ago.

Israel wanted to carry out a major counterattack on Iran last week. The country said it scaled back those plans under pressure from the United States, Israeli officials told The New York Times on Monday.

KLM has had to scrap two flights per day, one from Schiphol to Israel and the return flight. The airline did not want to say how many passengers have been affected by the cancellation of flights.

KLM previously announced that it would resume flights on Tuesday due to developments regarding the security situation in Israel. EasyJet, the third largest airline operating at Schiphol Airport, already said it would suspend transportation to Tel Aviv until October 27 due to the situation in the Middle East.

Israeli airlines El Al and Arkia have continued to operate their flights between Amsterdam and the region. The flights have sometimes faced hours-long delays in recent days.
