Interesting facts for your tours’ safety & total pleasure;

Pro Excursions sets the standards in Bayahibe in the matter of safety and reliability so that you can enjoy to the fullest your tour with us in the Dominican Republic. This is what you don’t know and that you should know so you can appreciate all the extra measures we took during your stop in La Romana…

  • There are taxis waiting at relay points. If there is a mechanical problem it usually will take no more than 5 minutes to change taxi to continue and  the drivers are always in communication. So your road trip is secured.
  • The Catamaran is inspected every morning and are is perfect working condition before starting the tour. But with mechanic, anything can happen, gas, engine, propeller etc. For this reason on that specific tour when we start the excursion, there is always a fully fueled Back-up speedboat waiting in case of emergency. The furthest point by speedboat from Bayahibe to the Beach of Saona is 30 minutes. 10 gallons more of gasoline is added in the boat, just in case.
  • The tour is scheduled to bring you back at Bayahibe 1.5 hours before ship departure. This leaves plenty of time to bring you back to port. So if any delays occur during the tour we have plenty of loose time, all events have been calculated.
  • There are life jackets for every guest
  • There is a complete first aid kit with people who know how to use it.
  • All guides are life guards and first aid attendants. (Dive masters or higher level)
  • A tour will be cancelled in case of bad weather forecast. No fun going out on a boat on a rainy day & no un-necessary risks to be taken.
  • If a tour is cancelled for other reasons you will be notified at least before your Cruise vacation starts.

This tour is offered to you to enjoy a beautiful day at one of the most beautiful beach of the Island of Saona in the DR. We are in the Dominican Republic and here you are not in the U.S. with American standards. The Locals speak Spanish not English. You need to be willing to live the adventure & fun of discovering a new country & culture while believing you are in good hands with us! Get ready for a great day in La Romana!!

La Romana (Dominican Republic) Cruise Port Guide (2023)

Basic guide to La Romana cruise port (in the Dominican Republic): discover where cruise ships dock and what's at the cruise terminal, how to explore La Romana, the best things to do, shore excursions, and all you must know.

By: Editor-in-Chief Update: May 28, 2023

The port of La Romana (in the Dominican Republic) has many highlights, such as the stunning islands of Saona and Catalina; the top attractions in Altos de Chavón, Punta Cana, and Santo Domingo; and the numerous beach resorts in Bayahibe and Dominicus.

  • Where is La Romana and cruise ships dock
  • The Cruise Terminal
  • How to explore La Romana
  • Top 15 Things to do
  • Shore excursions (Shorex)

La Romana is a regularly visited cruise port of call in the Caribbean itineraries during the Fall-Winter season, with as many as 395,000 passengers and close to 140 cruise ship visits in the 2018-2019 season.

The cruise port of La Romana has a very appealing character: the area is neat and immaculately kept. On the whole, La Romana is safe. Locals tend to be very friendly but not pushy and speak English reasonably well.

For those cruising with families, there is a lot to do. Cruise passengers with walking difficulties will find it easy to wander around on their own in the La Romana cruise terminal.

Where is La Romana and the cruise terminal

La Romana (a small port city with a population of around 130,400) is in the eponymous southern province of the Dominican Republic. The port city is on the southeast coast of the island, bathed by the Caribbean Sea. The cruise port in La Romana is around 200 miles (340 km) west of San Juan and 421 miles (678 km) north of Aruba .

Thanks to its location, La Romana is a regular port of call in itineraries sailing east and west Caribbean cruises. Cruises to La Romana usually call at popular ports such as Amber Cove , Curaçao , Bonaire , and Grand Turk . Cruise lines like Regent and NCL also call at top ports in the Eastern Caribbean like Antigua , Barbados , St. Lucia , and St. Maarten . Royal Caribbean cruise ships usually include a call at Labadee in their itineraries.

Homeport, embarking and disembarking in La Romana

La Romana is also a turnaround port (or homeport) for many years. The cruise terminal in La Romana is reasonably close to two international airports (La Romana International Airport and Punta Cana Airport), both with excellent worldwide connections. La Romana airport is 5 miles northeast of the cruise terminal and has daily direct flights to and from Miami.

German cruise lines AIDA and TUI use the port to embark and disembark passengers for a few years, and so does Marella (British). Although Carnival Cruise ships regularly visit La Romana, they never used the port as a homeport.

Where cruise ships dock

Cruise ships dock on the mouth of Rio Dulce (known in English as La Romana River). Two large cruise ships can berth simultaneously on two quays (one on each riverbank). The eastern quay has a pier for cruise ships up to 1148 ft (350 m) long, while cruise ships up to 820 ft (250 m) long can dock the western quay.

Photo of Cruise ships docked at La Romana cruise port

The western quay is a mixed industrial and cruise pier with very basic services and amenities. By contrast, the eastern dock is for the exclusive use of cruise ships and has an excellent open-air cruise terminal.

What's at La Romana Cruise Terminal

The cruise terminal in La Romana is also known as Sugar Breeze Cruise Terminal. The open-air terminal has a few buildings with services and amenities just yards away from your cruise ship gangway, not more than a 5-minute walk.

Here are the services and amenities you will find at the Sugar Breeze Cruise Terminal :

  • Information desk
  • Shopping area
  • Bar and Coffe Shop
  • Local handicraft stalls
  • Independent shorex meeting point
  • Chu-Chu train to downtown
  • Suttle bus to Altos de Chavón

The exit of the cruise terminal is on the eastern end. By the exit gates, there is an excellent Information Desk . We advise cruise passengers wishing to explore La Romana on their own to check this desk for updated information such as taxi fares and to pick up a map of the area. Bear in mind that you will have to show your shipboard card when re-entering the cruise terminal.

How to explore La Romana on a cruise

Cruise passengers wondering what to do on a cruise to La Romana will find that some attractions are better to enjoy with cruise excursions. That's the case if you wish to explore the highlights of Santo Domingo , enjoy a beach break in Catalina Island , or kayak in the C havón River . But there are experiences that cruise visitors can easily enjoy independently or on their own.

You can easily visit the village of Altos de Chavón , take a beach break in the resorts of Bayahibe and Dominicus , or a walk around downtown La Romana at your leisure. Here are the four possible ways to discover La Romana:

The transfer from the cruise port to our La Romana Excursions:

Taxi casa the campo:.

The taxi fares from the cruise port to Bayahibe (25 minutes) and back will be arranged by "TAXI CASA DE CAMPO". This is an independent company. As soon as you leave the ship, you'll see the coordinator of the taxi association with a sign "TAXI CASA DE CAMPO". Please note that on the port grounds the staff (pretends to) doesn't know "Seavis" or the transfer code. Ask for "TAXI CASA DE CAMPO" while on the port grounds and you will be guided to the parking of this taxi company.

The Transfer Code:

Depending on which excursion you have booked with us you will get a TRANSFER CODE together with your confirmation email. Please remember the TRANSFER CODE and when arriving at the parking of TAXI CASA DE CAMPO please provide the transfer code to the drivers , so you will get into the right taxi!!

Paying for the transfer:

The costs for the round trip taxi fare is $15pp for excursions starting in Bayahibe and us$7pp for the Chavon River excursions. The taxi fees are payable in cash directly to the taxi driver on the way back to the port . We'll make sure the taxis are on time for the return fare, so you don't miss the ship...

Directions:

Here you see a Google Earth image with the view of the Cruise Port: La Romana Cruise Port View ; the Taxi coordinator should be on the indicated spot. If she is not there for some reason than please follow the arrows to the Taxi Information Building (top left corner of the large bus parking). Here you can download a PDF with the directions to our Seavis Visitors center in Bayahibe ; you can also show this to the taxi driver if necessary.

Deposit Required:

Due to a high number of 'No Shows' we are forced to ask for a deposit with each booking of Carnival passengers. The deposit is 40% of the amount due, payable through paypal. You will receive the payment details togehter with your booking confirmation. In case you notify us of a cancelation 24 hrs or longer before we will refund the deposit. The deposit will also be refunded if the ship for some reason doesn't port in La Romana or if SeavisTours for some reason (e.g. weather) needs to cancel the excursion.

In some cases we'll ask you for a deposit. On most port days we will be fully booked and we have to disappoint cruisers who try to book .... But we also have a relatively high number of 'no shows': people with a confirmed booking who - without any notice- don't show up on the day of the tour. 'No shows' are a great expense for us (we've prepared the boats, the food, etc), but foremost: the people we had to refuse earlier could have joined the excursion..... For this reason we might ask groups larger then 8 people for a deposit of 40%. In case you can't join the tour, just phone us or send us an email and we will refund the deposit immediately.

Have a great Caribbean cruise and take a wise decision when selecting your shore excursions.

La Romana Cruise Port: Tips, Attractions and Beaches

The La Romana cruise port is in Dominican Republic’s third largest city. It is one of the few active cruise ports in the country.

It is mostly used by Carnival cruise ships and related brands such as Princess and Holland America because the company built the port. But this popularity is rather limited because La Romana is a small port.

Carnival makes a small number of stops there throughout the year. They are typically eight-day southern Caribbean cruises that embark from Florida and that also visit Grand Turk, Aruba and Curaçao. Some eastern Caribbean cruises go there as well.

Cruise visitors may find that the main attraction in La Romana is the resort village of Casa de Campo, a 7,000-acre complex that features golf, tennis, skeet shooting, equestrian, beaches and more. It is accessible from cruise ships via taxis and excursion buses.

Like other major destinations in Dominican Republic such as Punta Cana and Puerto Plata, La Romana is a destination that emphasizes plenty of activities in confined areas.

Where is La Romana?

La romana cruise port map.

La Romana is on the southeastern coast of Dominican Republic. It is 80 miles east of Santo Domingo and 48 miles west of Punta Cana. Its location within a 50-minute drive of Punta Cana offers some opportunities for shore excursions to attractions in that famous resort destination including dolphin encounters.

Quick Travel Tips

Attractions and shore excursions.

Like most private ports in the Caribbean, La Romana offers shopping and restaurants owned by the cruise line. Visitors who want to do more than shop will find other things to do elsewhere.

The region’s most popular cultural attraction is Altos de Chavón, a 15th century artists’ village next to Casa de Campo. It has hosted performers such as Frank Sinatra, Santana, Sting, Plácido Domingo, Andrea Bocelli, Heart and Air Supply, according to the Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism.

The village was designed by former Paramount movies set designer Roberto Copa. He also created movie sets for famous Italian film director Federico Fellini.

Some excursions to Altos de Chavón also go to Cuevas de las Maravillas (caves of wonders). Visitors go by footpath 25 feet underground to view stalactites and stalagmites. Another highlight is a collection of about 500 paintings by inhabitants on the island when Columbus first arrived.

The four-hour tour has prices starting at $70 per person plus discounts for children. Some tours are less expensive if they don’t include the cave.

For anyone willing to take the time, Carnival offers a one-hour ride to Punta Cana for the Dolphin Island Park and dolphin encounters. Prices vary based on the program, but they usually start at about $150 per person, which is typical for most dolphin encounter parks in the Caribbean.

Snorkelers and divers will want to visit the Guadalupe underwater museum, which can also be seen by snorkeling above it.

Another popular spot is the living museum of the Cara Merchant shipwreck, which once belonged to the famous Captain Kidd who was sentenced to death after being accused of being a pirate.

A marine coral reef nature preserve surrounds the six-square-mile Isla Catalina, which attracts thousands of divers and snorkelers each year.

Another one-hour excursion drive will go to Hoyo Azul Cave. This natural pool with crystal clear blue water is at the base of a giant cliff. The excursion also includes educational trails and animal encounters.

For golfers, Teeth of the Dog designed by Pete Dye has been called the top golf course in the Caribbean and among the top 100 in the world ranked by Golf Magazine. It is located at the Casa de Campo resort. The resort also has art galleries that display painters and sculptures from around the Dominican Republic.

Three other nearby Dye-designed courses are Dye Fore, The Links, and La Romana Country Club. Another option is La Estancia, designed by his son, P. B. Dye.

Beaches Near the Port

A Catalina Island beach break for five hours has a starting cost of $95 per person with discounts for children. This beach break is more expensive than most because of a 35 minute road ride.

Saona Island is accessible by boat from Bayahibe and is popular for its beaches and excursions on catamarans and speedboats. Lucky tourists will be joined by dolphins that swim and leap nearby. Like Catalina Island, this excursion cost about $95 per person but includes an open bar. Again like Catalina, visitors take a bus ride followed by a boat ride.

Visitors may have better luck and spend less money by going to a beach on their own. Several beaches are near the cruise docks and accessible by shuttle or taxi depending on the location. They include Casa de Campo and a 10-minute taxi ride to Bayahibe Beach.

Two of the best beach options for anyone taking a taxi are Playa El Caleton and Playa Bayahibe. El Caleton is close and decent. Bayahibe is farther and better.

Playa El Caleton is just less than two miles from the cruise terminal and a better choice for anyone who wants a quick visit. Bayahibe is a 25-minute drive and has more to offer. It’s also often available as a cruise excursion.

Two smaller options are Playa Caleta at five miles and Playa El Minitas at four miles from the terminal.

Shopping and Dining

Altos de Chavón has a small number of shops and restaurants. Another shopping and dining option is The Marina, a village within Casa de Campo.

Transportation / Getting Around

La Romana transportation options are simple and clear thanks to its small size: taxis, shuttles and excursion buses.

Passengers will find taxis and shuttles at the docks to take visitors to Casa de Campo, the Marina and Altos de Chavon. Taxi rates are often negotiable, so ask for a price before getting into the cab.

In our experience, negotiating taxi rates in a cruise port is a risky business, especially at the end of the day when the ship is almost ready to leave. We recommend taking an excursion bus whenever possible.

La Romana and other locations in the Dominican Republic are blessed with warmer weather than average temperatures in the Caribbean throughout the year.

Daily highs average in the mid to upper 80s Fahrenheit and break 90 degrees from June through September. Rainfall is lowest during this time as well.

The worst time to visit is November and December when average rainfall reaches nine inches a month. La Romana also has a brief rainy season in May.

la romana cruise excursions

Cruise along the easternmost tip of the Dominican Republic on a double-decker catamaran and pause along the way to snorkel the reefs just offshore. After settling in on board, you will be free to move about the spacious catamaran and enjoy the plentiful sunny and shaded areas. As you skirt along the shore, the tropical scenery will be absolutely spectacular in every direction. After assessing the water conditions, the captain will anchor the catamaran in an ideal spot for snorkeling. The marine life may include French grunts, spotted drums and yellow goatfish, which often travel in schools. Another stop will made near a sandbar, allowing you to swim and wade in the shallow waters. To enhance the festive on-board atmosphere, the bar will be open, rum-laced Mama Juana cocktails will be flowing and music will be playing. Back at the marina in Punta Cana, time will be allotted for shopping.

• Settle in on a spacious double-decker catamaran and cruise the waters off Punta Cana. • Admire the gorgeous tropical scenery in every direction. • Snorkel and swim in the crystal-clear waters along a reef and a sandbar just off shore. • Listen to merengue, the traditional music of the Dominican Republic.

HELPFUL HINTS

• Dress in weather-appropriate clothing. • Wear swimwear under your clothes and bring a towel. • Wear flat comfortable walking shoes.

La Romana Cruise Port • A Crew Member’s Guide

Oh, La Romana cruise port! My old friend! The Dominican Republic is a popular stopping place on plenty of Caribbean cruises, with a plethora of ports to choose from. And La Romana cruise port is one of the most visited of them all, with a sizeable terminal which is the perfect place for welcoming large groups of passengers.

As a crew member, I’ve visited La Romana cruise port- also known as Sugar Breeze terminal – more times than I can count over the years, so here’s my personal (crew member’s) guide to this busy Dominican Republic port.

Transferring to the cruise port

If you’re starting (or finishing) your Caribbean cruise from La Romana cruise port, you will likely be flying into Punta Cana airport. The journey takes about an hour by road, and it’s a good idea to pre-book your travel from Punta Cana to La Romana.

What’s in port?

La Romana cruise port is one of the most well-equipped in the Caribbean, and simultaneously one of the calmest. The port can only fit one ship in at a time, which is great for crowd control. Other ports like St John’s in Antigua , or Bridgetown in Barbados , may have parking spots (or berths, if you want to get technical about it) for a seemingly infinite number of gargantuan ships, but in my opinion this makes for a whole load of overcrowding.

The port is on the edge of the city, on the very edge of an estuary into the Caribbean Sea, and it’s incredibly well-equipped when it comes to passenger comfort. As well as the usual duty free terminal building filled with bottles of rum and chocolate and cigars, there’s a sizeable market square filled with shops and stands selling paintings, jewellery, rows and rows of beach cover ups, and an entire flock of brightly-painted wooden flamingos and parrots. There are also a few bars and coffee shops dotted around.

The best thing about La Romana cruise port though, is the pool.

The swimming pool with its very own swim-up bar, is a very recent addition; when I began working the season in November 2022, the pool was still in construction. Now, in early March 2023, the pool has been open for a while and every couple of weeks a new bar opens- there’s one left still in construction.

The pool in La Romana is completely free to use, and there’s also no charge for the sun loungers- of which there are plenty.

Where to get a taxi at La Romana cruise port

Like a lot of Caribbean cruise ports you’ll find the ‘official’ (which sometimes basically means ‘licensed’) taxi drivers just inside the terminal gates. These drivers all wear a uniform, and the price of each journey is set per passenger depending on where you want to go. On one hand, this is great as there’s no need for haggling. On the other, sometimes a haggle is necessary; the prices are set high.

Once you exit the car park containing the taxi rank, head out of the side entrance that is parallel to the ship. There are always plenty more taxi drivers waiting here, and these guys are open to negotiation on price. The later in the day you leave (and the fewer potential customers are), the better price you can negotiate.

Closest beaches to La Romana cruise port

One of the main reasons that it’s so nice to have a pool in the cruise terminal at La Romana, is that you can’t just walk to the closest beach. Bayahibe is around twenty-five minutes away by car, although if you don’t fancy splashing the cash on a taxi (or just want a more authentic Caribbean experience), you can catch a bus from the main road to Bayahibe for around $1.50.

Bayahibe is as popular with locals as with tourists, and that’s why I appreciate it. The sandy beach is lined with trees, and there are plenty of beach bars and restaurants to grab a drink or some food from. Slightly further along the coast is Playa Dominicus , with its blue and white striped lighthouse. There are more resorts around this beach, so as a result the beach feels slightly more ‘groomed.’ Both beaches are great for families as the water is fairly shallow for a long way; just watch out for the odd sea urchin.

Best shore excursions from La Romana cruise port

I’ve got my own personal number one all time favourite place to visit from La Romana, but I’ll save the best till last and show you a few other options first.

There are plenty of things to do in La Romana other than head to the closest beach, like visiting Altos de Chavón , a replica Mediterannean village, or heading much further away to the private resort island of Isla Catalina . (Here’s a catamaran tour to the island.) It’s even possible to take a day trip to Santo Domingo, the capital city- although it’s definitely advisable to do this with a private tour like this one, just to make sure that all transportation is taken care of.

If you want to stay close to La Romana but still experience and learn about some of the local culture, this guided La Romana tour is ideal , with stops at Altos de Chavón, a cigar factory, and Casa de Campo included, as well as giving an overview of the city itself.

For those people who are feeling a bit more adventurous, and want to do something outside of the usual more touristic excursions, check out this snorkelling tour to the cenotes of Bayahibe. The tour is led by local guides who take you on a short hike through the jungle and then into the underwater world of these stunning caves.

a yellow house on the beach at Isla Catalina

But my absolute favourite number one place to visit from La Romana…

Without a doubt, the best excursion from La Romana cruise port is a visit to Isla Saona.

This stunning island is exactly what springs to most minds when you say ‘Caribbean.’ The island is an absolute paradise, and unlike the mainland there are no big hotels or buildings here, as Saona Island is a national park. It is downright glorious, and in my opinion is not just one of the most beautiful spots in the Caribbean, but one of the most memorable places I’ve ever been.

For a more detailed guide, head to the post I wrote on Isla Saona.

Or, if you’ve already made up your mind about this must-visit destination, go directly to book a tour to Isla Saona. This one picks you up directly from the cruise terminal – and includes lunch, transport to the island via speedboat, and also stops at the natural starfish-filled pools on the way back. If you’re looking for more of a party experience, this longer tour includes an open bar on board, and an extra stop at Bávaro beach.

I don’t care how you get there, just get there if you can .

Is it worth it to go into the city?

It’s possible to walk from La Romana cruise port to the city, however, there’s a slight catch. The police will only let tourists go so far, before stopping them for their own safety. So, despite the fact that La Romana is one of the Dominican Republic’s biggest cities, I’ve never been any further than the Jumbo supermarket. (Which, I have to say, is a brilliant supermarket and worth the walk if you need to stock up on toiletries and snacks.)

There’s also an amazing Italian restaurant and deli called Punto Italia which, if you’re craving pizza, is equally worth the journey. (Try the Pizza Imperial, it’s da bomb.) The waiters are great, and there’s a resident cat who I like to call Barbosa. (And on a side note, the wifi is also very good.)

The walk takes about fifteen minutes- past a baseball field and through a residential area complete with neighbourhood bars and chickens scratching in the dirt, across the train tracks, and over the bridge along the main road. The sun in the Dominican Republic is powerful and the humidity is high; so get ready to sweat. Once you reach the main road, there’s often heavy traffic complete with heavy traffic noises. Here and there women sell avocados (the greenest, most ginormous avocados I’ve ever seen) out of buckets, and men sell newspapers and coconuts from portable roadside stands.

When there are ships in port, tourist police are stationed at intervals along the fifteen minute walk; so if you’re not sure of the way, they’ll be sure to help you out.

women selling fruit in La Romana Dominican Republic

So, technically you could dock at La Romana cruise port and never leave the terminal. But in my opinion, it’s so very worth it to get outside and explore for even a short time; whether on a day long excursion to an island, or a short walk through the neighbourhood.

Logistical Statisticals

  • Currency in the Dominican Republic is Dominican Pesos, and one peso equals about 0.17 Euros.
  • Most shops, buses and taxi drivers accept US dollars as well, although any change you get back will normally be given in local currency.
  • Don’t walk about with all your valuables on display! I’ve never had any problems with safety in the Dominican Republic, however theft is not unheard of.
  • Spanish is the official language in the Dominican Republic, and at least understanding a little bit of the language will get you far!

Thanks for the information on the cruise port. Do you know if we can enter the area before we board the cruise ship? It’s where the ship is originating from.

Hi! Yes, normally when cruises begin at La Romana cruise port, all passengers pass through an outdoor check-in area at the entrance to the cruise terminal. (Everything is very well signposted and there will be plenty of crew as well as port staff to help guide you.) You’ll receive your boarding card at this check-in area, which is also your ID for getting in and out of the cruise terminal. Once you have this, you’ll be free to move around the cruise terminal, go to the pool, bars within the terminal etc. as you please; so even if you don’t want to board the ship immediately or you know you can’t get into your cabin until later in the day, you can use these facilities anyway.

Are there any hotel for a one night stay near the terminal. We will be flying in the day before the cruise.

Hi! The Hotel El Dorado is a good choice for passengers starting a new cruise; it’s only about 15 minutes away in a taxi and is really highly rated. The Hilton Garden Inn is in a similar area and is another good choice. These are both in the Playa Caleta area; you could also look at hotels in the Bayahibe area although these are further away by comparison.

If you want something more luxurious to start your holiday with, Casa de Campo is a nearby luxury resort where it’s possible to book one night stays.

Let me know if this helps!
