While most regular train rides in Switzerland offer great views and a comfortable travel experience, there are also certain luxury train tours that really take it up a notch. Here are my picks for the top nine luxury train rides in Switzerland that you should definitely add to your bucket list!

Understanding luxury train rides in Switzerland

Just a quick word before you book that unforgettable train ride in Switzerland: Get yourself a Swiss Travel Pass . Unlike a regular public transport pass, the Swiss Pass actually covers most, if not all, of the luxury train rides in this article! 

While you can certainly purchase tickets for each experience individually, having the Swiss Pass certainly unlocks more experiences and, in my opinion, certainly makes it much easier to explore Switzerland by rail. 

With that said, let’s kick off our wonderful train journey(s) in Switzerland! 

1. Bernina Express

The Bernina Express is undoubtedly one of the most famous train rides in Switzerland. It promises an unforgettable luxury experience as you traverse the land and discover the natural beauty of Switzerland through the train’s panoramic windows on this four-hour journey along the highest railway tracks in Europe! 

The Bernina Express travels from St. Moritz to Tirano, Italy via the Bernina Pass along the iconic Rhaetian Railway —  a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once in Tirano, passengers have the option to transfer onto the Bernina Express Bus and extend their journey to Lake Como in Lugano. 

Along the way, you’ll see picturesque sights like the glistening Morteratsch Glacier, Lago Bianco, a scenic lake 2,253 meters above sea level, and the serene Val Poschiavo Valley. These are in addition to the many romantic gorges, tunnels, and bridges you’ll pass by during the journey. 

One particular highlight of this Swiss train tour is the Brusio Circular Viaduct which will likely remind Harry Potter fans of the scene where they see the Hogwarts Express chugging along the beautiful alpine countryside.

If you opted to go for the full Bernina Express experience and find yourself in Lugano, you’re in luck, because you can then hop aboard another one of the best luxury train rides in Switzerland, the Gotthard Panorama Express ! 

This particular Swiss train offers panoramic views of both the Swiss and Italian countryside as you make your way from Lugano to Lucerne via an epic journey that ends with a boat ride to Luzern! What makes the Gotthard Panorama Express different is that it only operates between April and October. 

On the bright side, this means that whenever you board this famous Swiss train, you’ll get incredible spring and summer scenery right outside your windows! Along the way, you’ll also traverse the Gotthard Base Tunnel, the world’s longest and deepest tunnel which lies beneath the Swiss Alps at a depth of roughly 2,300m! 

Things to know about the Gotthard Panorama Express :

• Route : Lugano to Flüelen (Italy) by train and to Luzern by boat
• Highlights : Castles of Bellinzona, Chapel Bridge, Lake Luzern, Mount Rigi (excursion)
• Total trip distance/duration : Five hours and 30 minutes (182km) 
• Dining options : Light snacks and refreshments on the train; a restaurant boasting a seasonal menu on the boat
• Best time to visit : The Gotthard Panorama Express only operates between April and October

3. Glacier Express

Equally as famous as the Bernina Express is the Glacier Express , one of the most beautiful luxury train rides in Switzerland. 

Just imagine: You’re comfortably seated in your coach, complete with large panoramic windows. The Glacier Express departs its station and thus begins your eight-hour journey through the alpine regions of Valais, Uri, and Grisons.

Along the way, you watch in awe as majestic mountains, scenic ravines, and breathtaking valleys pass by your window. No wonder the Glacier Express is known as one of the most scenic trains in Switzerland!

While the total distance between St. Mortiz and Zermatt, the two terminus stations of the ride, is only 290km, this luxury train ride in Switzerland takes a total of eight hours to complete, chugging along at a leisurely pace of just 38km per hour, making it (intentionally) the slowest express train in the world. 

Things to know about the Glacier Express :

• Route : St. Moritz to Zermatt or vice versa
• Highlights : Matterhorn, Albula Valley, Rhine Gorge, Landwasser Viaduct, Chur (Switzerland’s oldest city), Zermatt
• Total trip distance/duration : Eight hours (290km) 
• Dining options : On-board kitchen which serves both a-la-carte dining options and three-course meals
• Best time to visit : The Glacier Express is best experienced during winter when it snows

4. Luzern–Interlaken Express

The Luzern-Interlaken Express is arguably the shortest route among all the luxury train rides in Switzerland. Covering a distance of 98km, the journey on this Swiss train ride takes only about two hours to complete. And yet, those two hours may well be the most memorable experience on your trip to Switzerland! 

As its name suggests, the Luzern-Interlaken Express connects the two cities of Luzern and Interlaken. But unlike a typical commute, this premium panoramic train turns the journey into an experience in and of itself, allowing passengers to gaze out at pristine mountain lakes, waterfalls, and majestic mountains throughout the short but scenic train ride. 

Upon arrival at your destination, several excursions are available to further explore the beauty of Switzerland. 

In particular, we recommend staying a few nights in Interlaken so that you have the chance to travel to iconic locations like Jungfraujoch, where you will find the tallest railway station in Europe; and upon it, Schilthorn Piz Gloria, a peak in the Bernese Alps complete with its own cable car ride and restaurant. 

Things to know about the Luzern-Interlaken Express :

• Route : Luzern to Interlaken or vice versa
• Highlights : Jungfrau Region, Grindelwald, Lake Luzern
• Total trip distance/duration : Two hours (98km) 
• Dining options : On-board bistro restaurant in the middle of the train
• Best time to visit : The Luzern-Interlaken Express runs daily but the scenery is best during the spring season

5. Golden Pass Express

If you had chosen to ride the Luzern-Interlaken Express to Interlaken, then you’re in luck, because you can then continue your journey with another one of the famous Switzerland luxury train tours — The Golden Pass Express . 

This five-hour journey between Interlaken and Montreux is actually quite new, having commenced operation only in December 2022. It is basically a more premium and luxurious version of the famous Golden Pass Line which connects Luzern and Montreux. 

On this new luxurious Swiss train ride, passengers get to enjoy the view of the Swiss Alps as they chug alongside the scenic Lake Thun, passing through the beautiful Simmen Valley and the alpine village of Zweisimmen, as well as fairytale-esque castles and lovely hillside meadows.    

Then, as you approach your final destination, prepare to be amazed as the picturesque natural scenery outside your panoramic windows gradually fades into the Mediterranean flair of the resort town of Montreux.

• Route : Luzern to Montreux or vice versa

6. Matterhorn Gotthard Express

From Montreux, it’s actually possible to catch the most beautiful leg of the journey on the Matterhorn Gotthard Express , another one of the best luxury train rides in Switzerland. Basically, from Montreux, you’ll want to take the train to Visp and from there, transfer to the Matterhorn Gotthard Express. 

While your time on this scenic train ride in Switzerland is rather short — the trip from Visp to Zermatt takes only about an hour or so, the views you’ll see along the way are some of the most magical. After all, you’ll be traversing the Nikolai Valley, the deepest-incised valley in Switzerland. 

Picture snow-capped alpine peaks, deep, verdant ravines, and stunning hillside villages passing by your panoramic window before the iconic Matterhorn emerges from underneath the horizon! 

Things to know about the Matterhorn Gotthard Express :

• Route : Montreux to Visp to Zermatt

Instead, it offers passengers an uninterrupted view of the Swiss countryside, punctuated by verdant hills and ambient villages. 

The train runs between Luzern and St. Gallen where, upon departing against the backdrop of the idyllic Lake Luzern, takes passengers on a quiet journey through Central Switzerland. 

It passes through Lake Zurich, the Sitter Viaduct (Switzerland’s highest railway bridge), and Rapperswil, a lovely town known as the City of Roses, before arriving in St. Gallen, where ou can find the famous Abbey Library, one of the oldest and most beautiful libraries in the world.

Things to know about the Voralpen-Express :

• Route : Luzern to St. Gallen or vice versa
• Highlights : Chapel Bridge, Abbey Library, Lake Zurich, Sitter Viaduct, Rapperswil 
• Total trip distance/duration : Two hours and 30 minutes (125km)

• Best time to visit : Summer is the best time to truly take in the hilly views outside your window

8. Thurbo Lake Line

Speaking of St. Gallen, after spending a few days in the city, there’s another luxury train ride in Switzerland you can catch if you’re planning to head to Zurich. The Thurbo Lake Line connects St. Gallen to Stein am Rhein, Schaffhausen, and Zurich along rolling hillside scenery and the shorelines of Lake Constance and the Rhine.

Along the way, apart from lovely natural scenery (which includes the Rhine Falls), you’ll also pass by iconic landmarks like Munot Fortress, and the imposing railway bridge of Eglisau.

While the Thurbo Lake Line isn’t always considered a scenic train route, it’s certainly an underrated luxury Swiss train ride that turns a regular commute to Zurich into an unforgettable treat for the senses! 

Things to know about the Thurbo Lake Line :

• Route : St. Gallen to Zurich
• Highlights : Lake Constance, Rhine Falls, Munot Fortress
• Total trip distance/duration : Two hours and 30 minutes (around 130km)  
• Dining options : There are no food or drink options on the train but passengers may bring their own food
• Best time to visit : Any time is a good time to board the Thurbo Lake Line

9. The Chocolate Train

While not always considered a luxury train ride in Switzerland, the Chocolate Train remains a must-try experience in the country and presents itself as a unique journey in its own right. To be more exact, it is a pre-booked tour experience with a set itinerary. 

As the name suggests, The Chocolate Train is a Swiss train journey that will delight passengers with a sweet tooth, as those who travel along this route eventually make their way to the Cailler-Nestlé chocolate factory at Broc. I mean, Swiss chocolates are to die for, right? 

While the train itself stops at Montbovon, passengers then change to the Chocolate Bus which brings them to Gruyeres and later to Broc. Though this may sound like a foodie’s dream road trip, the journey along the way is filled with scenic sights that will charm your heart. Think verdant valleys, rolling hills, and more! 

Things to know about The Chocolate Train :

• Route : Montreux to Montbovon by train, then to Broc by bus
• Highlights : Gruyeres cheese factory, Cailler-Nestlé chocolate factory
• Total trip distance/duration : The entire tour takes around seven hours

• Best time to visit : At the time of writing, The Chocolate Train runs between May and September.

Journey through some of Switzerland ‘s most picturesque southern towns and cities in romantic style aboard its spectacular trans-alpine railway network.

Begin in German-speaking Gstaad , one of the most exclusive ski resorts come wintertime that returns to traditional rural ways in the green summer months. Here you’ll experience traditional cheese making in the high pastures above the village and along the first only suspension bridge to connect two mountain peaks.

Then take the GoldenPass train to Montreux before crossing the Pennine Alps to fairytale Zermatt in the shadow of the Matterhorn. From here, the famed Gornergrat train ascends from 1604m (5262 feet) to 3089m (10135 ft) for one of the finest views in Switzerland.

The Glacier Express is another iconic rail journey, winding eastwards to St. Moritz , with a night in Andermatt, and traversing the Landwasser Viaduct. Spend two nights in this sunny town, partaking in a little stand-up paddleboarding in the Engadine Valley, before a final rail journey south on the Bernina Express, following a route that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Your last stop is the Canton of Ticino , a bright, Italianate place of glamorous lakeside towns and rustic mountain villages, where you’ll explore some of its most scenic valleys and the castles of Bellinzona.

Completed in 2012, the Alpina Gstaad was the first new hotel to be built in over a century and is fast redefining the Alpine experience. Discrete and cosmopolitan, it has received numerous awards since opening.

Swiss heritage is reflected in the rooms and suites which feature classically carved ceilings and timber-clad walls as well as decorative accessories such as the traditional leather straps used to hold cowbells. Located near the alpine passes in one of Switzerland’s most beautiful regions, Gstaad is a small village known for its high-profile guests, luxury hotels and high-end restaurants. The crisp mountain air, soaring peaks and lush alpine scenery make this a wonderful place to explore the great outdoors. Don your walking boots and discover the 300km of hiking trails, or sit back and relax in one of the cable cars that wind their way through moors, valleys and gorges.

In the village itself you’ll find boutiques, art galleries and shops as well as picture-perfect chalets fitted with charming wooden shutters and window boxes overflowing with flowers. Gourmet restaurants abound along with those focusing on more traditional Swiss cuisine and there are plenty of places to stop and drink in coffees and aperitifs as well as the spectacular views.

The farmers in the Swiss mountains move up to higher altitudes with their cows during the summer months, heading to the best pastures, which cannot be reached during winter. Many of them live in different alpine huts during summer, where they can take care of the cows. Instead of bringing the fresh milk down to the dairy in the valley every morning, the farmers themselves produce cheese in their huts.

You'll head out early in the morning to an alpine hut and unlock the secrets of cheese production using the freshest milk from local cows. You can even lend a hand yourself, before sitting down to enjoy a traditional breakfast with the farmer.

Take a cable car to up to Glacier 3000, for a ride over the glacier by the Snow Bus and a walk along an ice track to the spectacular Peak Walk by Tissot, the first and only suspension bridge to connect two mountain peaks. You can also have lunch at Refuge l'Espace, a cliffside restaurant with incredible views.

The Jungfraujoch is an alpine viewing point located in between the well-known mountains Mönch and Jungfrau. From Grindelwald, take the cog train to Europe's highest train station, at an impressive 3,454m where spectacular views across the surrounding mountains await. Together with your private mountain guide, you'll then hike across the glacier to the Mönchsjoch hut, before returning and taking the train back to Grindelwald.

The unmistakably Swiss Mont Cervin Palace is a Zermatt landmark, a place of quaint charm and warm hospitality.

150 rooms are of the highest quality, all with a fantastic view of the Matterhorn or the snow-capped ‘four-thousanders’. The rooms are spread between three buildings, elegant in the main building, chalet style in Le Petit Cervin with family apartments in the Résidence.

Guests can enjoy not only the hotel’s dining venues, including the Michelin-starred Ristorante Capri, Grill Le Cervin, Le Restaurant and Japanese Myoko, but also at other Zermatt establishments that are part of the Dine Around scheme. There are also two bars, wine cellar and cigar lounge.

The expansive spa features a large pool, sauna, fitness centre, massage and beauty therapists, and a well equipped fitness centre.

Zermatt is a fairytale village in every sense. Traditional alpine architecture abounds with wooden shutters adorning windows and pine lodges stretching up the valley side. With a ban of combustion engines in town, horse-drawn carriages can be seen trotting along the avenues while others choose to hop on bicycles to make their way around. Dominating the valley is the Matterhorn its emblematic, triangular peak composed of four sheer sides facing north, south, east and west. The mountain is solitary in its great size, dominating the distant skyline long before the first summit in 1865. For those who are not experts at scaling these great heights, there are a couple of railway and cable car facilities that travel part way up the 4,478m (14,692 foot) ascent.

The steep Gornergrat Railway is the highest open-air railway in Europe, offering fantastic sweeping views of Zermatt. After the Riffelberg stop, where there's an amazing view of the Matterhorn, you can see Monte Rosa and its glacier. Enjoy the breathtaking panorama of the numerous tongues of ice and the Valais. The excursion can be rounded off by the ascent first to Hohtälli, then to Stockhorn in two successive cable cars. If you don't suffer from vertigo, walk from Gornergrat to Hohtälli, following a narrow mountain path for truly breathtaking views.

The pyramid of the Matterhorn dominates the centre of Zermatt, situated in the Nikolaital Valley. The mountain has strongly influenced the development of this old village, which was 'discovered' a century ago by the British and launched as a resort in 1855 by the Seilers, a family of hotel-keepers. Zermatt is renowned as an important mountaineering centre, with a dozen peaks over 4000m within easy access of the resort. It's popular with visitors of all nationalities and the resort is traffic-free, with the exception of small electric vehicles and horse-drawn carriages and sleighs.

The Gorner gorge, a short walk from Zermatt, is a place of exceptional natural beauty. The wooden walkways leading between the towering cliffs provide a dramatic insight into the power of nature. Since the last ice age, the waters of the Gornervispe have carved an ever deeper chasm. Access for tourists was created back in 1886 and 1887. The rock, greenish serpentinite, is about 220 million years old.

Board the world-famous Glacier Express train for one of the world's most panoramic rail journeys. Crossing hundreds of bridges and passing through dozens of tunnels, today you'll undertake the first half of the trip to Andermatt, a journey of a little under four hours, travelling on the Mattertal line and Furka section of the route.

Lost in the valleys and high Alpine regions of Andermatt, the Chedi Hotel is an opulent oasis of luxury and sophistication.

After a day exploring the deep gorges and mountain paths, relax with a treatment at the spa, take a dip in the indoor or outdoor pool or let off some steam in the Finnish sauna. There is also a fully equipped gym and the option to take yoga classes or train with a personal trainer.

There are numerous snow activities to get to grips with while in the warmer summer periods there are over 500km worth of hiking routes to tackle. Explore paths that will take you across remote natural treasures, lonely mountain lakes and onto icy peaks.

Enjoy an evening in the Alpine village of Andermatt. The village’s narrow streets are lined with traditional chalets and up the Ursern Valley you'll find the Devil’s Bridge, which spans the sheer Schöllenen Gorge.

In the eastern Swiss canton of Graubünden, it's the original alpine playground, attracting royalty and the rich for over 150 years, and is more than equipped to cater for the rarefied crowds both in the winter and sun-drenched summers.

One of the most spectacular ways to cross the Alps, the Bernina Express from St. Moritz to Tirano links up regions with different languages and cultures on a wonderfully scenic route that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Surrounded by forested mountain slopes and snowy peaks, the Castello del Sole E is found on a 14-hectare estate that boasts beautiful landscaped gardens that roll down towards Lake Maggiore. The original buildings date back to 1532 and it has retained its old-world elegance while offering everything you would expect from a contemporary luxury hotel.

The 78 rooms and suites are spread across the main building and the Locarno and Ascona pavilions. The majority come with views of the park that stretches down to the shores of Lake Maggiore. Sharing more of its border with Italy than Switzerland, Italian is the only official language in Ticino, and great swathes of culture, culinary tradition and history are shared with neighbouring Lombardy and Piedmont. As well as forest-covered mountains, water defines the region, the canton taking its name from the Ticino River that flows southwest into the Po, and centred around the two great transfrontier lakes – Lugano and Maggiore – with their deep blue waters fringed by colourful towns and snow-capped peaks. The city of Lugano itself has picturesque boulevards lined with palm trees and stunning views of the Alps, and, as with sophisticated Locarno by Maggiore, is a great base from which to explore the region. There are some 4000km of hiking trails snaking out across the mountains, wild swimming in the beautiful Valle Verzasca, boating, mountain biking and rustic villages to discover. The Italian cities of Como and Varese are easily reachable too.

Enjoy a full-day tour to the region's most beautiful valleys, such as Valle Bavona, Valle Verzasca and Valle Maggia. Bavona Valley, which branches off from the Maggia Valley, is characterised by its wilderness and rustic villages, while Verzasca runs with incredible clear emerald water and Maggia is dotted with small picturesque stone houses, vineyards and dairy farms.

Historic Bellinzona, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is an inevitable point of passage for trans-Alpine traffic taking the routes through St Gothard, Lukmanier or San Bernardino on the Italian side of the Alps. It has gone from being a thousand-year-long stronghold defending Tessin to being the canton's administrative capital. The castle has three castles, two of which - Castelgrande and Castello di Montebello - were once joined by walls that can still be seen, give an idea of the fortified buildings that once protected the city.

13 Magical Trains in Switzerland You Need to Ride ASAP

Having just returned from a whirlwind binge of Switzerland’s most scenic trains, I can say without an ounce of exaggeration that the Swiss train system is a true marvel of magic.

And beyond their surplus of scenic routes, razor-sharp punctuality and Care Bear-friendly service, the crowning jewel of the Swiss rail system is, in my opinion, its glittering roster of scenic, panoramic Swiss trains – a holy grail of sorts for those traversing Europe by rail.

As I’m sure you know, train travel in Europe is an oft glamourized mode of transport, a classy and elegant contrast to the stuffy conditions of air and bus travel.

Well, I’m happy to report that in Switzerland, all your swankiest train dreams do indeed come true.

As a Canadian who grew up far removed from train travel, I admit the concept always delighted me (thanks, Hogwarts Express!!), and now even after so many years of frequent rides, I’m still like a giddy sugar-high child on her own moving candy shop.

Take it from this fangirl then, European train travel doesn’t really get better than Switzerland.

The Most Magical Swiss Train Rides You Need to Try

The following are all stunning Swiss train rides that I have personally done and consider extremely bucket list worthy, whether for the landscapes, the trains themselves or just the overall experience. So, without further ado, here are some trains in Switzerland that you definitely cannot miss!

Money saving tip: If you plan on doing many of these train rides in one trip, look into huge money savers like the Swiss Travel Pass , the Half Fare Travel Card or a Eurail Pass to potentially save hundreds of dollars. More on this below!

1. The Golden Pass (Classic)

This Switzerland scenic train is, without a doubt, my favourite.

While not as famous as big Swiss names like the Glacier or Bernina Express , if it’s a touch of old world glamour and Belle Époque elegance you’re looking for, then please, book yourself on the  Golden Pass Classic  as soon as humanly possible.

The entire GoldenPass line is a tremendously scenic line running between Lucerne and Montreux in three separate segments, offering sweeping views of snow-dusted peaks and eight glimmering lakes along the way.

While the entire route is well worth drooling over, the segment from Montreux to Zweisimmen in particular is one I’d highly recommend because a few times a day, you can do the route in the “MOB Belle Époque” which is modelled after a 1930s Orient Express style luxury train.

If you’re feeling especially swanky, splurge for 1st class, where you get to sit in plush green armchairs while taking in all the stunning scenery. I have to admit, this felt even swankier than that $7000 train ride I did in India!

NOTE: The Golden Pass from Montreux to Zweisimmen ALSO has trains called the “MOB Panoramique” that do the same route, but with modern cars and not the classic ones. If you really want the experience I described above, make sure you are booking on the “MOB Belle Époque”.

BONUS TIP: I did this scenic ride in November, and I got to witness golden autumn colours mixed in with all the snowy mountains, while enjoying the benefit of fewer crowds. I’d highly recommend this time of year for it! You can also stop off at some of the most magical Christmas markets in Switzerland along the way, including the beautiful lakeside Christmas Market in Montreux.

2. The Glacier Express

This famous Swiss Alps train ride is known as one of the most luxurious and best train rides in Europe, so it’s no wonder it’s made my list (read my honest review of the Glacier Express in 1st class! ).

End to end, it brings you between the swishy ski resorts of Zermatt and Saint Moritz, stopping in a variety of stops like Andermatt and Chur along the way.

From start to finish, you’re looking at a tortoise-like slow ride of about 8 hours, ensuring that it does indeed earn its title of “the slowest express train in the world”.

And while the Glacier Express is certainly not everybody’s cup of tea (again, it’s very very slow and takes up an entire day), I loved it for the experience.  

There’s nothing quite like a long scenic train ride to give you an ample dose of dreamy “I love the world” moments.

Imagine giant panoramic glass windows, plush, comfy chairs, and my personal favourite: table service with hot three course meals served straight to your seat.

After all, if you’re taking a train through Switzerland, why shouldn’t you be inhaling a giant chocolate pudding at the same time?

It’s not just about the food of course. This wonderful train ride through the Swiss Alps will take you from snow-dusted mountains and terraced vineyards to rocky gorges and turquoise rivers.

This is definitely a bucket list trip that comes with a hefty price tag, but if you want to treat yourself to one of the best train trips in Switzerland, this is it. Just don’t expect to get anywhere in a hurry 😉

3. The Bernina Express

Bar none, the Bernina Express is one of the most famous train trips in Switzerland, and I’m happy to report that it does indeed live up to all the hype and buzz!

This four hour ride between Chur and Tirano is one that brings you from the snowy mountaintops of Switzerland down to the warm, balmy Mediterranean views of Italy , passing by a constant barrage of unique landscapes along the way.

No doubt, if it’s excellent value you’re looking for, this is the train I’d recommend. read my full guide to the Bernina Express for more info.

Compared to other journeys (side-eying you, Glacier Express ), the Bernina Express is quite a short ride, but the diversity of landscapes you get to take in is breathtaking.

From ruined castles and fortresses to quaint alpine villages and famous viaducts, the Bernina Express is like a “best of” tour of Switzerland, all in a compact, time-friendly package.

Just to warn you though, your memory cards will all run out of space, and your phone will 1000% die from the sheer beauty of it all.

NOTE: If you are a keen photographer, or prefer to avoid touristy crowds, I would actually recommend doing this ride using regional trains instead. More on this below!

4. The Transalpin (from Austria to Switzerland)

It’s definitely not the most well known of all Swiss train rides, but I recently rode the Transalpin from Innsbruck to Zurich, and was blown away.

This EuroCity Express ride is one that isn’t marketed as being a scenic sightseeing experience, but is nonetheless one that brings you across some awe-inspiring landscapes in Austria, Switzerland and even the wonderful micro-nation of Liechtenstein .

The scenery you pass is gorgeous, but the starring feature for me is the panoramic 1st class car that they add to one journey a day, which allows you to soak in the views with giant windows  just like on the sightseeing trains mentioned above.

Seriously: it’s the glamour of the aforementioned express trains, but without the crowds!

The best part is, taking this panoramic train at 3:48pm from Innsbruck in March meant I was able to watch sunset from the train, and let me tell you: watching the sky turn fiery pink over Walensee as we weaved through the impossibly green rolling hills of Austria, then Liechtenstein, then Switzerland was pure magic.

This is a lesser known Swiss panoramic train, and definitely a hidden gem that you should consider adding to your Switzerland train tour.

5. The Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn

Alright, listing the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn is kinda cheating because the following route is technically a segment of the Glacier Express.

But since the Glacier Express is a million years long and not everyone has the luxury of spending a full 8 hours on a scenic train, I would recommend the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn from Visp to Zermatt as an excellent taste of the Glacier Express experience.

Not only do they have panorama cars just like on the Glacier Express, the rugged scenery here (I would argue) is one of the best parts of the entire GE journey.

Leaving from Visp, you pass by rocky mountains, terraced vineyards, turquoise rivers, and of course, as you approach Zermatt, snowy Alpine towns and even the famous Matterhorn if you pay attention! I didn’t, and managed to miss it, although thankfully I got some great views of it in town!

If you want to experience a panoramic train in Switzerland without paying a reservation fee (and without the accompanying crowds of the more popular scenic trains), then this is a great option.

Other (Non-Tourist) Swiss Train Rides and Routes I Recommend

Train travel in Switzerland is next level, so naturally, the country has far more to offer than just the panoramic tourist trains mentioned above.

In fact, pick any random route in Switzerland and it’s bound to bring you somewhere pretty scenic.

That said, here are some of my top picks for train rides I’ve done that weren’t part of the panoramic express rides mentioned above, but are still pretty incredible (with the added bonus that they don’t feel at all touristy).

6. The Express routes above but on regional trains

So here’s a secret I’ll let you in on: all the “Express” trains mentioned above are so-named because they are built for sightseeing, and take you end to end with no stops… BUT regional trains travelling between those areas go past the exact same landscapes, often with fewer crowds, and the ability to open windows on certain trains.

So, while most Swiss train tours will bring you along one of the ‘Express’ trains, if you are an avid photographer, want to save money on the reservation fee, or would like to stop at different towns along the way, then I would recommend doing the Bernina Express and Glacier Express on regional trains instead.

I did this on my return leg from Tirano to Chur (AKA the Bernina Express route) and I loved the experience. I had a carriage all to myself, I could open the windows and overall, I was like a happy puppy sticking her head out a car window the entire time ! 10/10 would recommend.

7. From Interlaken to Thun

The clarity and colours of Lake Thun are seriously next-level, so if you can, enjoy the views from a train going from Interlaken to Thun.

I recently got to enjoy the view below while going from Interlaken to Spiez, and I really couldn’t believe my eyes.

Is water even legally allowed to be that blue? Was I trapped in an over-saturated anime?

These are the kinds of existential questions that you’ll find yourself asking on board this ride 😉

8. From Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen

One of the biggest treats of doing Switzerland by train is being able to slowly enjoy the fairytale-esque landscapes, and as far as colourful postcards go, it’s tough to beat the short ride from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen .

Rolling green hills, towering mountains and an endless parade of lush green trees await. The best part? The view riding into Lauterbrunnen, as the iconic Staubbach waterfall comes into view.

9. From Buchs to Zurich

I love that this Switzerland train ride takes you past two stunning Swiss lakes: my personal favourite, the impossibly turquoise Walensee, and of course the beautiful Lake Zurich.

This is a ride I’ve gotten to enjoy a few times, and it’s certainly one of my favourites.

10. From Lausanne to Montreux

Alright, so this is another short ride, but it’s an unbelievably beautiful one that glides along the clear blue waters of Lake Geneva the entire time, with a foreground of lush green vineyards to boot.

If your goal is to experience one of the nicest and shortest train routes in Switzerland, I’d highly recommend this ride, especially when it starts to tilt and swerve into Lausanne (a city with an awesome Christmas marke t). Total bliss!

Amazing Swiss Train Rides Still on My Bucket List

Last but not least, there are a handful of Switzerland scenic train rides that I still haven’t had a chance to do, but it feels weird to exclude them in a roundup of Switzerland’s best train rides, so here they are below:

11. Erlebniszug Rheinschlucht

Imagine riding along the Rhine Gorge in an OPEN TRAIN, with all the fresh smells and sounds of nature hitting your senses directly.

I caught a glimpse of this yellow beauty while on the Glacier Express and I just about lost my mind and demanded that they stop the train immediately so I could transfer.

Unfortunately, the Erlebniszug Rheinschlucht is only available in the summer (which I guess makes sense) but it’s nonetheless something I would love to try someday. Click here for more details (and photos!)

Of all the scenic train rides in Switzerland, there are very few that allow you to experience it all completely open-air, so definitely put this one on your list!

12. The Cogwheel Train up Mount Pilatus

With a title like “the steepest cogwheel train in the world” you can expect the ride up to Mount Pilatus to be pretty special.

Mount Pilatus is one of my favourite mountains in Europe, and because my visit a few years back was veeery poorly timed (snow delayed the opening of the cogwheel train by a week!), I missed the opportunity to ride this steep monster up to the top.

Nonetheless, my consolation prize was sweet enough: a scenic ride up by cable car, with access to incredible views the entire way up.

The next time I’m in the area, I’ll be sure to catch the Cogwheel train to the top instead, experiencing a nerve-rackingly steep ascent that I’m sure will make me cry a little….. but in a good way!

13. Jungfraujoch

Last but not least, we have the legendary Jungfraujoch.

The train ride up to Jungfraujoch brings you to the highest train station in Europe, passing by endless snowy peaks along the way (if your views aren’t obscured by poor weather that is!).

Truthfully, I’ve resisted doing the Jungfraujoch thus far for two simple reasons: cost and uncertainty!

At an eyewatering 200CHF for a regular roundtrip ticket, this is one trip that does NOT come cheap, certainly when bad weather might mean you don’t see anything at all once you reach the top.

Nonetheless, it’s a bucket list item for sure, and one that I’d be keen to test out sometime in the future, as I have heard great things about it. I did part of this journey (which for most, starts in Interlaken) from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen which was short and slow, but very nice.

BONUS: The Gelmerbahn

No roundup of amazing Switzerland train journeys would be complete without this one, even though it’s brief and not quite a conventional train ride.

Nonetheless, the Gelmerbahn (AKA the Gelmer Funicular) is a truly epic ride that deserves a mention on this list.

This surprisingly thrilling ride is an open air funicular that whisks you up a steep mountain to a crystal clear turquoise lake.

The incline is so steep, it was once the steepest of its kind in Europe, and moves 2m per second, which doesn’t sound like a lot, but definitely feels like it when you’re racing up a mountain.

You can take the Gelmerbahn up (which is what we did), down (which I hear is much scarier) or roundtrip. Either way, the unique experience, views, and lake up top all combine to make this one of the coolest Swiss “train” rides you can do!

How to Buy Cheap Train Tickets in Switzerland?

Last but not least, I know what you’re all thinking after reading this post… how can you possibly afford all these Swiss scenic trains?

The tough truth is: enjoying Switzerland train travel is an expensive endeavour indeed, but I’ve been able to discover a variety of cost-saving hacks over the years that might be able to help you out!

TIP #1: Use a rail pass

One of the ways I’ve been able to explore Switzerland by rail SO cheaply is thanks to rail passes!

This is how I managed to scheme my way into only paying 30 euros for my 1st class tickets on the Glacier Express and Bernina Express!

Long story short, Eurail/Interrail passes allow you to waive the base ticket fee which means you only need to pay for a reservation. As such, I paid 306 euros for a Eurail global 10 day pass, (I got a free 1st class upgrade thanks to a sale they were running).

I then used 1 travel day on the Glacier Express, which evens out to only about 30 euros spent for this gorgeous ride (plus the 23 CHF reservation fee).

Still an incredible deal, and by far the cheapest way to do it. This is actually how I did all my recent train rides for a rock bottom price.

So, if you are travelling around Europe, getting a Eurail pass might be a good idea, because Switzerland is certainly where you get the best bang for your buck!

TIP #2: Consider a Swiss Travel Pass

A Swiss Travel Pass is similar to the Eurail / Interrail passes except it gives you unlimited transportation on trains, buses, boats and free public transport + museums).

If you are travelling only around Switzerland, this might be a good option.

It is expensive though, so make sure to do the math and see if getting one would really be worth it.

TIP #3: Consider getting a discount card

The Half Fare Travelcard is a very popular card that you can buy which (true to its name) gets you half price tickets across Switzerland.

In 2020, this card is 120 CHF for one month.

This sounds like a lot, but it could be worth it if you are spending an extended amount of time in the country and plan to take multiple Switzerland train trips throughout your stay.

For what it’s worth, if you were to use this card for the Glacier Express alone, you’d already be breaking even so if you take more trains on top of that, then you’d definitely save a good amount of money.

TIP #4: Travel in the off-season

This tip is mostly just for the Glacier Express , but I’ll include it anyway.

While base ticket prices do not change, reservation fees for panoramic trains can change depending on whether you travel in the off, mid or peak season.

If you want to get the cheapest ride, go in the off-season which A) means guaranteed snow!! and B) half the price on a reservation.

Oh my goodness! I am dying to go to Switzerland and your post confirms why. How stunning!

I’ve always dreamed of riding an old-fashioned train through Switzerland, so I think the Glacier Express is for me! The photos you captured through the train windows were breathtaking.

Wow, these look amazing. Would love to do one of those one day. Nothing quite beats the snowy Swiss scenery.

First of all, I didn’t realize that Switzerland had so many trains, but this proves me wrong! Now I need to go try them all!!!

Other scenic lines: Brig – Kandersteg – Spiez (this line climbs high from Brig along a track right next to the side of the mountains before going through and around the mountains. Beautiful views. A second great ride is (Luzern)- Arth/Goldau – Erstfeld – Göschenen – Bellinzona on the old line via the spiral tunnels. At the town of Wassen, the line circles around the little village and you get to see the quaint church three times from different heights and angles. On the other side of the Gotthard tunnel, in the Italian speaking Swiss canton of Ticino, there are more of these spiral tunnels and great views as the train circles slowly down to the valley floor.

What a great article really well researched. I particularly agree with your tip about travelling on the local trains over the titled ones. I would add three trips to do should you return. The Brunig railway, Interlaken to Luzern, Martigny to Chamonix, the Mnt Blanc Express. The three mountain railway lines out of Aigle, I guess that makes it five then!
