The M4 is a motorway in the United Kingdom that connects London and South West England. It runs from London to South Wales and it is a crucial part of the English transport network.

The M4 was first proposed in 1927 and construction began in 1958. It was completed in 1971, running from London to Reading, Berkshire and later extending to South Wales.

The M4 is one of the major roads in the UK and a significant part of the economy. The M4 has been upgraded in certain sections and currently consists of 146 miles (235 km) of motorway.

The M4 is one of the safest motorways in the UK. According to the Department of Transport (DfT), the M4 had a collision rate of just 0.41 per million vehicle kilometres between 2017-2018. This is lower than the UK major-road average of 0.71.

Will M4 be closed at Pontabraham on Sunday 3rd September.Also what other roadworks the same day on M4.

On Saturday 19 March at approx midnight, I will drive from London to Windsor on the M4 hoping to exit at junction 6 for Windsor. Will I be able to do this smoothly or will there be deviations on my way to Windsor from London for M4 works on Saturday the 19th of March? Thanks

Latest live M4 traffic news

Live m4 traffic news and updates for m4 junctions, plus real time travel reports on delays, accidents, roadworks and snow.

The M4 is the main road running between London and South Wales, passing via Slough, Reading, Swindon, Bristol, Newport, Cardiff and Swansea along the way. Much like the rest of the UK’s road network, the M4 has its areas most likely to cause tail backs – primarily where it joins the M25 on the west of London and also where it meets the M5 near Bristol. Naturally, accidents, roadworks and other traffic issues cause delays, so it pays to be on top of your journey before you start your engine.

There used to be a toll road charge to cross the M4 Severn bridge that joins England and Wales, but after 52 years, the charge was scrapped on December 17th 2018.

Generally the majority of the M4 tends to stay relatively clear, but the 189-mile route can see extra congestion during rush hour and summer holidays. If you’re planning to use any section of the M4 motorway, this page will be a useful aid for travel alerts, live updates and an incident map for both westbound and eastbound lanes.

The history of the M4 

The Ministry of Transport first proposed a new road from London to South Wales in the 1930s. Plans for the M4 as one of the first major post-war trunk roads were produced in 1956 and construction began in 1961. The Chiswick flyover, a short section of elevated dual-carriageway built to reduce the impact of traffic travelling between central London and the west, opened in 1959 and later became part of the new M4 route. The section from J18 to the west of Newport was opened in 1966, including the Severn Bridge, which is now part of the M48.

The English section of the motorway was completed in December 1971 when the 50-mile stretch between Maidenhead and Swindon was opened for public use. The Welsh section was finished in 1993, when the Briton Ferry bridge opened. The Second Severn Crossing opened in 1996, and motorways on either side of the river carried the M4 over the new crossing when construction was finally completed.

As most of you will have already seen, back in December, National Highways, the government body who control and operate the CCTV cameras on the M4 (and the rest of England) restricted access to their feeds, freezing the images on that date and not allowing third parties like us to give you the access to the latest traffic images you previously enjoyed.

We've been working hard to get this access restored but have unfortunately met with nothing but bureaucratic red tape and a response of "no, because we said so" from National Highways.

Road users in Scotland and Wales don't have this problem; their government bodies put the needs of the public first and have created ways for third-party providers to build fast, helpful services, now used by thousands of UK motorists daily.

The more people that sign, the quicker this can be resolved, so please share!

All the M4 road closures set to disrupt traffic across South Wales this week

There will be a number of road closures in place on the M4 this week that are set to cause disruptions across south Wales.

These M4 closures come as a result of maintenance works set to be carried out during the week.

The closures are set to take place in various locations up and down the M4 including near Bridgend and Swansea.

These are the sections of the M4 that will experience road closures this week (March 25 to 31), according to Traffic Wales .

M4, eastbound - Junction 37 to 36 : The entry slip road to the M4 eastbound between junctions 37 (Pyle) and 36 (Sarn) will be closed from Monday (March 25) to Wednesday (March 28) due to maintenance work.

The closures will take place each night from 7pm to 6am.

M4, eastbound - Junction 47 to 46 : The M4 will be closed eastbound from junction 47 (Penllergaer) to 46 (Llangyfelach) from Monday (March 25) to Tuesday (March 26) due to maintenance work.

The closure will take place overnight from 8pm until 6am.

There will also be a host of mobile speed cameras out and about across south Wales throughout March for motorists to be aware of - the full list of which can be seen here .

For those motorists travelling away from the M4, enforcement has now begun on roads where the new 20mph speed limit was introduced in September last year.

M4 Traffic News. The M4 is a highway that crosses the western part of the United Kingdom, from London to south Wales. It began operations in 1961 and ended in 1996. Highways England data indicates that around 130,000 vehicles travel along the M4 daily.

It begins in Chiswick and ends in Pont Abraham in the Carmarthenshire region. The M4 runs 189 miles and passes through several significant cities and towns, including Reading, Bristol, Cardiff, and Swansea. As Heathrow Airport passes, Junction 3 and Junction 4B offer access to all five terminals. The M4 corridor is the term used to describe the region of the UK that borders the M4.

The M4 has some considerable portions. Given that there are only three in the UK; it contains two four-level stack interchanges at Junction 20 and Junction 4B, which is an important feature. There are just three motorways in Wales, including the M4. On the M4, a toll bridge spans the River Severn; motorists must pay the toll to enter Wales but not England. On M4, the portion between Junction 29 and Junction 32 added six lanes in 2010.

The M4’s Most Intersections:

20th Junction:

This intersection near Bristol is one of the four-level stack interchanges mentioned above and is known as the Almondsbury Interchange. The road also connects to the M5, so traffic can be very congested. The M5 has only two lanes. Therefore it’s better to avoid it during rush hour.

40 And 41 Junction:

These intersections in Port Talbot have long been trouble spots for drivers because of backups and speed traps. A 50 mph speed limit is a significant area of traffic congestion, and there is a system of average M4 Speed Cameras .

Crossroads 1:

The Chiswick Roundabout is one of the UK’s oldest highway intersections. It can prolong traffic at times because it’s where the north and south circular highways heading into and out of London intersect.

Junctions 25A And 26:

There is frequent traffic congestion around Newport, with a two-lane section at the Brynglas Tunnels. For up to 2018, it will shut down the tunnels at night for safety renovations.

Accidents on The M4:

Always check M4 traffic updates before driving on the M4 to be aware of potential traffic accidents and to take precautions against potential consequences. Despite the relatively high safety record of motorways, accidents can occur at any intersection.

The stretch of the freeway between Junction 18 and Junction 20 has seen many incidents recently. Another accident hotspot is the vicinity of M4 Junction 16, close to Swindon. The M4, A48, and A483 intersect at Junction 49 at the Pont Abraham Interchange, which has also experienced many incidents.

Major Occurrences And Mishaps:

• A collision in Maidenhead in June 1984 claimed 13 lives.
• Ten people lost their lives in the March 1991 M4 highway collision near Hungerford. In the hazy accident, 51 automobiles were involved.
• In May 1995, a coach carrying Royal British Legion members left the M4 close to the Severn Bridge, killing ten people.
• Cozy Powell, a drummer, passed away in April 1998 after a collision on the M4 near Bristol.
• Between Reading and Maidenhead in July 2002, Gus Dudgeon’s car went off the M4, killing him and his wife. Gus Dudgeon was a music producer known for his work with Elton John. The inquest recorded an accidental death judgment.

M4 Junctions 3-12:

M4 Junctions 3–12 was one of the major M4 projects, that has completed in March 2022 and a potential cost of £860 million overall. The project has converted the M4 between junctions 3 and 12, or the section between Hounslow and Reading, into a “smart highway.”

M4 Junctions 10 And 11:

The River Loddon Bridge was undergoing maintenance, which began in late 2017 and ended in 2018. During that time, it’s likely that there was speed restrictions and nightly closures.

M4 Junctions 12 to 13:

Speed Restrictions- Traffic Cameras:

The national speed limit is in effect for the majority of its length. A few examples are as follows:

• On the Chiswick Flyover within London, the speed limit is 40 mph (64 km/h) in both directions.
• Only eastbound traffic can travel at 60 mph (97 km/h) between Junction 4 and the Chiswick Flyover.
• On the Port Talbot elevated segment between junctions 40 and 41, the speed limit is 50 mph (80 km/h). In 2006, they removed the fixed speed camera for contributing to traffic jams.

Tracking the Military Convoys on the Route to Moscow

Wagner’s leader announced that his troops marching on Moscow would “turn around.”

Military convoys believed to belong to Yevgeny V. Prigozhin’s Wagner forces have been seen at various points along Russia’s major M-4 highway, which leads to Moscow. In at least two areas along the route, clashes have broken out. The route shown here is approximate.

In an audio statement later on Saturday, Mr. Prigozhin said he and his Wagner forces were “turning around our columns and returning to field camps according to plan.”

Watch BMW M4 Do Crazy Drifts Through Moscow Streets [Video]

Warning: This video contains Misogyny rap music. Turn down the sound and watch as a Russian BMW M4 driver takes the performance coupe out on the streets of Moscow. We certainly don't condone this type of driving and think it's dangerous to say the least. We also think this video was staged. The streets are full of cars as he torches the tires and does crazy drifts with the M4 around other motorists. Scroll down to see the M4 video.

Is this thing for real? You can see police cars sitting with their lights flashing as he goes right by them without a chase. This driver is good and never loses control as he burns the rubber off the stock tires. The video is shot at night, and then during the day. The tires are so worn, that you can see sparks from the metal cords in the bald tires.

Watch as the BMW M4 drifts around corners, crosses center lines and completes a few 360 degree spins right in front of traffic and cops all with what seems to be reckless abandon. It’s too good not to be staged. While the M4 is a track monster and street legal, we only recommend this type of driving be done on the track.
