18 Best Things to do in Mahogany Bay, Isla Roatan

J. Souza

Going to Mahogany Bay on a cruise? This guide will tell you everything you need to know and everything you can do at the port and surrounding areas.

Mahogany Bay is owned by Carnival Corporation, and the stunning cruise port is located on Roatán Island in Honduras.

As it’s owned by Carnival, other cruise lines under the umbrella of the parent company will use the port on their itineraries, including Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Costa Cruises, and others.

With its sparkling white sand beaches and warm Caribbean waters, it’s easy to see why so many travelers love Mahogany Bay. For many, it is their favorite port of call, and we are going to see why with this guide.

mahogany bay roatan excursions

This guide offers helpful information about what there is to do and see at the port and around Roatan. Visitors who come here can enjoy a variety of activities such as snorkeling and scuba diving, which will give them access to the area’s colorful marine life.

Other popular activities include kayaking through the mangroves or taking an island-hopping tour. Cruisers can also take advantage of the shopping opportunities available at Mahogany Bay’s bustling marketplaces. There they can find souvenirs and local hand-made crafts.

Note: Although the port is operated by Carnival it is recommended that you take your passports and photo IDs off the ship with you. Also you should bring some cash as you will not be able to charge purchases to your onboard account.

Mahogany Bay’s Cruise Ship Port

Mahogany Bay cruise port shops

Remember that not every cruise ship visiting Roatan will use the Mahogany Bay cruise port. Roatan, Honduras has two separate cruise ports , depending on which cruise line you’re sailing with: Port of Roatan and Mahogany Bay. The Coxen Hole cruise ship dock ( Port of Roatan ) is used by cruise ships from Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Virgin Voyages, MSC Cruises and others.

The Mahogany Bay cruise port that we are covering today is only used by ships owned by Carnival Corporation. These ships are from cruise lines that include Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, and Costa Cruises . The Mahogany Bay Cruise Center has two berths where two cruise ships can dock at once.

The piers and terminal can get busy and crowded at times with over 8,000 excited passengers ready to explore the welcome center and isle of Roatan. As you exit the pier you will be guided through a duty-free shop . The shop sells a variety of items including beach necessities such as water shoes and sunscreen as well as popular duty-free things. Prices are comparable to those on board the ship.

As you exit the store you will see the walkway leads to an open air plaza with lots of shops. This cruise center is where many of the excursions will meet. You can also book excursions here as well.

Where is Mahogany Bay?

where is mahogany bay

Mahogany Bay is located on the west end of the isla Roatan in the country of Honduras.  Nestled in the protected southern waters of Dixon Cove, the port offers over 20 acres for passengers to enjoy.

It is about 5 miles from the island’s capital, Coxen Hole, which is also where the other cruise port is situated. Roatan is one of three islands that are 31 miles off the coast of mainland Honduras, and it is the biggest and most populated of the three.

It is about 140 miles east of Belize. The island is part of the Western Caribbean Cruise itineraries and is one of the most popular destination ports for Caribbean cruises. From shopping, to eating out at local restaurants, to exploring nearby attractions such as Gumbalimba Park or Blue Harbor Tropical Arboretum – there’s something for everyone to enjoy! There are also plenty of beaches and water activities available for those looking for some fun in the sun.

How Big is Mahogany Bay?

Being only 5 miles wide at its widest point and 38 miles long, the Roatan island offers about 20,000 acres of beautiful nature to explore. Mahogany Bay is just a small part of the island and acts as the entryway into the gorgeous isle.

The cruise center covers about 20-acres of land and Mahogany beach takes up 10-acres of private land.

Note : The Mahogany Bay port is just the cruise port portion of the island of Roatan so there is much more to explore outside of the port. This article will focus mainly on the port of Mahogany Bay but will mention a few things outside of the area as well. You can check out our article on Roatan here.

Things to Do in Mahogany Bay

mahogany bay port tips

There is something for everyone visiting Mahogany Bay. Whether you want to relax on the beach in your beach chair or take part in some exciting shore excursions, there is always something happening.

You can take a dolphin cruise, go snorkeling along the coral reef, or even try out kayaking in the bay. For those looking for more of an adventure, you can dive into the depths of Gumbalimba reef with a scuba dive or sail off on a catamaran tour from West End.

One of the cool things about this port of call is that you can enjoy an amazing beach day without having to spend any money at all. That’s right! The first thing on our list is totally free. Or rather, it CAN be. If you wish to explore the outside area of the cruise port you will turn left and if you wish to visit the beach area turn right.

1. Mahogany Bay Beach

mahogany beach right near the cruise port, showing pier for snorkeling

Mahogany Bay Beach is for cruise passengers only, and it’s free to access. You will need to show your cruise card at the entrance. No transportation is needed to get to the beach as it’s right near the cruise port, although you can try the chair lift to make it easier (more on this later).

The sandy beach is about a 10-minute walk from the cruise terminal. There are tons of water sport activities available. These include snorkel masks and fins, paddle boards, Zayak, Fun Cat, Sea Hammock, Aqua Cycle, Aqua Cycle Boat, Paddle Boat, Hobie Kayak, kayaks, umbrellas, and more.

While the Mahogany Bay Beach is free for cruisers the equipment rental does have an extra cost.

There are plenty of lounge chairs that are free to use, however. You just need to get there early to ensure access to them. If two ships are in port it might be more difficult to find an open lounger if you get there too late.

Only a few lounge chairs are in the shade so those fill up fast. If you want to make sure you have some shade on your beach day you can rent a clam shell for $26 for the entire day.

Loungers and clam shells at Mahogany Beach

If you want to upgrade your day at the beach you can rent a cabana. Air-conditioned cabanas come with two lounge chairs, a hammock, beach accessories, a small TV, a safe to keep valuable safe, Wi-Fi, and waiter service in a semi-private beach area.

There’s also a refrigerator stocked with sodas and water. Fully air-conditioned beach cabanas come with two lounge chairs, a hammock, necessary beach items, free Wi-Fi and waiter service in a semi-secluded beach area.

The beach is over 800 feet long and offers some secluded lounger retreats, a dock for snorkeling, and a two-story gazebo that overlooks the pristine waters.

If you get hungry while hanging out at the beach there is an open-air restaurant right there. Fat Tuesday is also right outside the beach entrance and has an extensive menu with food and drinks. There are also 5 or 6 different places right in and around the main cruise center area.

There are restrooms and showers right there at the beach just near the restaurants, so you can rinse all the sand off before heading back to the ship.

2. Take the Nature Trail

Nature trail at Mahogany Bay

The nature trail in Mahogany Bay will take you to the free beach area. There is a more straightforward path to get there as well but the nature walk offers some interesting vegetation along the way, along with some good photo ops of your cruise ship.

As the trail winds through the wooded area it bends around towards the water with only slight elevation. Having to step over tree roots that could trip you up, be mindful there is some loose gravel along the path as well.

If you’re walking to or from Mahogany Beach you might as well try the nature trail during one of your walks just to spice things up a little.

3. Ride the Magic Flying Chairlift

magic flying chairlift in mahogany bay

Still, the views from the Magic Flying Chair are pretty spectacular, and after a long day playing water sports at the beach you might just want to sit down and take in the stunning views of Roatan on your way back to the dock at Mahogany Bay.

Note: The chairlift will not save you time as it moves rather slowly. Also, you will be above the tree canopy which provides great views of the ship and water, but that also means you will be in the sun a lot.

4. Enjoy a Zip Line Adventure

A zip line adventure is a great way to experience the Caribbean! On your cruise to Roatan, you’ll be able to book a zip line excursion at the Mahogany Bay Cruise Center. The cruise center is within walking distance of the port and beach, so it’s easy to get there from your cruise ship.

The excursion takes you across the island, giving you a unique aerial view of Roatan that you won’t get anywhere else. If you’re looking for an adrenaline-filled adventure while on your cruise, taking a zip line tour is definitely worth it. You’ll be able to see stunning views of the Caribbean and even make stops along the way for some fun in the sun.

You can book an zip line adventure both at Extreme Adventure Park and also Gumbalimba Park. Each will cost about $100 per person.

5. Snorkeling in and Around Mahogany Bay

Snorkeling at Mahogany Bay

There are some amazing reefs around the island of Roatan. And with over 100 miles of coastline you have plenty of options. But you don’t have to go far from the Mahogany Bay cruise port to find some great spots as well.

Though the beach is man-made there is some great beginner-friendly snorkeling locations right off the pier. The reef has some great coral and marine life that most casual snorkelers will enjoy. Here are some of the best snorkeling locations around the island:

  • Little French Cay

15+ Tips and Things to Know About Visiting Mahogany Bay (Roatan) on a Cruise

Sitting about 30 miles off the coast of mainland Honduras, Roatan is a popular destination for cruise ships — especially those sailing from Galveston, New Orleans, and other ports on the Gulf of Mexico. And within Roatan is a small area surrounding a cruise port known as Mahogany Bay.

Beach view of Mahogany Bay, Roatan

A destination for Carnival ships, if you’re sailing on the cruise line to Roatan, this is where you’ll port. Not only does the spot give you the feel of a private port of call with its own beach, shops, and more, all designed for cruise passengers, but it’s also an ideal starting point to explore the rest of the island.

So whether you want to just relax and work on your tan or you want to go experience one of the most beautiful tropical islands in the world, you can do it all from Mahogany Bay. And if you’re visiting the area, there’s plenty you should know before you arrive. Below, we’ve detailed important tips and things to know about visiting Mahogany Bay in Roatan on a cruise.

Map of Mahogany Bay, Roatan

It helps to have an idea of the lay of the land before you get off the ship. Fortunately, the area is relatively small, and the ship is always visible so you don’t run the risk of getting lost. In total, it only takes about 15 minutes to walk completely from one end of the port area to the other, with the ship right in the middle.

Go Enjoy the Free Beach (10-Minute Walk)

The first thing you’ll notice as your ship docks is the gorgeous white-sand beach to the east. With green trees, white sand, and blue water, it’s a postcard-perfect view from the ship. The best news? It’s absolutely free to go and enjoy.

Simply head off the ship and hang a right to get over to the sand and water. There you’ll find bars/restaurants, loungers, facilities, and some of the most gorgeous water you can imagine. Hitting the beach is definitely one of the most popular things to do and you’ll find lots of company hanging out, soaking up the sun.

There are Multiple Great Spots for Photos

Photo opportunity in front of a cruise ship

Want a picture in front of the ship? What about a sign for Mahogany Bay? Or a sign that says what you’ll definitely think while you’re there: “I wish I could stay here forever”? There are multiple spots all around the Mahogany Bay area that are perfect for getting those souvenir photos.

And don’t worry about missing them. The only one that’s a little harder to find is a spot in front of the ship, which is on the Nature Trail in Mahogany Bay. All the others are highly visible as you walk from the ship toward the beach.

Think of Mahogany Bay as Two Sections

As mentioned, the port area of Mahogany Bay is designed for cruise passengers. It has everything that you could need and is essentially broken down into two areas.

As you exit, you’ll follow the path to the first section, which is a large open area surrounded by a number of shops, including those selling everything from high-end jewelry to a craft market with locally made goods. There is also an exit here to grab a taxi or tour bus for excursions to other parts of the island, along with a few spots to get a drink.

Then there is a pathway that takes you over to the second section of the port, which is the beach area. It’s just a few minutes walk, or there are alternate ways to get there (more on this below). This section is likely where you’ll spend most of your time should you decide to stay near the ship.

Wi-Fi Access Is Available

Wi-fi access in Mahogany Bay, Roatan

These days you can get Internet access on the ship, but it can be pricey and a bit slow. For instance, buying Carnival’s highest-tier plan will run you about $20 per day during your cruise. If you just want to check in occasionally, then you can wait until you get into port. Most ports have somewhere that you can access wi-fi, and Mahogany Bay in Roatan is no different.

As you exit the ship into the main shopping area, head to the left. There you’ll see a small yellow and green kiosk where you can pay $5 for unlimited wi-fi for the day covering the shopping and beach area. This is way cheaper than what you’d pay on the ship and gives you a chance to check-in back home when you just want access for a few hours.

Forgot Something? There’s a Pharmacy in Port

Inevitably, no matter how much you pack, you’ll forget something. That’s just the way it goes. While ships have shops where you can pick up forgotten items, you’ll find more variety — and usually cheaper prices — if you can wait until you get into port. There, you’ll almost always find a small “pharmacia” selling anything you might need.

That’s the case in Mahogany Bay. If you look in the shopping area of the port, you’ll find a small pharmacy that has lots of toiletries and the such for passengers who need to pick something up while in port.

There’s a Nature Trail to the Beach You Don’t Want to Miss

Nature trail in Roatan

If you are walking over to the beach area, then you have two options to get there. There’s a regular pathway that most people take, but there’s also a nature trail that’s worth checking out.

As you head down the main paved path, you’ll see a rocky path off to the right for the trail. It has some elevation change and uneven ground, so it may not be for everyone. But if you can handle it, the trail takes you slightly back into the woods toward the water. In our visits almost nobody is there at all, giving more peace and quiet. The best part is that it offers some neat views of the ship that most people don’t see.

Don’t Want to Walk? Take the Chair Lift

Chair lift in Roatan

One of the unique features of Mahogany Bay is one you can easily see from the ship. The port offers a chair lift that takes you from the main shopping over to the beach. You catch the lift near the exit from the shopping area. It costs $8 for kids and $14 for adults (though prices may change).

One thing to know is that the ride is a bit slow. It goes at about the same pace as walking but also stops to load and unload passengers. That means being up in the full sun with no shade. It will give you a good view and is a neat experience, but just take note of the weather. If it’s hot and still, you might be more comfortable walking.

“Clamshells” Are a Must on the Beach… Or Find the Shady Spot Farther Down

Shade canopies in Roatan

The beach at Mahogany Bay is beautiful. There’s little doubt that you’ll want to spend some time on it. But you’ll also want some shade. For most people, that means renting one of the “clamshell” covers that are lined up on the beach. They are a bit expensive — $26 for a spot — but it’s worth saving your skin from the sun.

If you want to save some cash, then one tip is to head down the beach a little farther. There you’ll find loungers that are underneath the shade of some small trees. It gives you some relief from the sun and saves your wallet.

Remember, This Is Just a Small Portion of Roatan

For many, visiting Mahogany Bay is idyllic. But if you’re an explorer, then know there is a whole lot more of the island to check out. All told, Roatan is 30 miles from end-to-end, with gorgeous beaches dotted around. If you’re a diver or snorkeler, the area has one of the largest barrier reefs in the world. In other words, it might be worth checking out the excursions offered or set up your own up for when you visit. There’s an entire world out there beyond the port area.

Bring Some Cash Into Port

While Mahogany Bay is for the enjoyment of cruise passengers, it’s not just an extension of the cruise ship. That means unlike some private islands you might visit, you can’t just use your keycard to pay for things in port. Instead, it’s a good idea to bring cash with you. Yes, you can use credit cards, but we like to use cash instead of risking using the card in a place where we are leaving that afternoon.

Drinks/Food Are Available in the Port Area

One the highlights of any port is being able to grab something to eat or drink somewhere other than the ship. While we think the food on a cruise ship is overall pretty good, eating anything for several days in a row can wear on you.

So if you want to hit the beach, the good news is that there is are bars/restaurants that serve cruise passengers… and they are just steps from the sand. Just keep in mind that you’ll pay tourist prices. While many ports offer cheap drink specials for those passing by, with only a few options available, we found the prices were inline with what you’ll pay on the ship.

Want to Hit the Water? Lots of Rentals Are Available

Beach rentals

Sure you can go swimming, but there are plenty of other ways to get out on the water. From kayaks to snorkel gear to paddle boats to personal floats, they are all available for you to rent. Just head over to the beach area and you’ll see the building for rentals

Just be prepared for the prices. Renting snorkel gear cost $20, while a kayak was $34 an hour. Even an umbrella for the beach was $26. Here’s a full list of prices from a recent trip:

  • Snorkel gear: $20/day
  • Floating mat: $9/day
  • Hydro Bike: $30/hour
  • Paddle Board: $30/hour
  • Fun Cat (small boat): $50/hour
  • Sea Clam: $60/day
  • Clamshell: $26/day
  • Sea Hammock: $30/day
  • Aqua Cycle: $26/half hour
  • Aqua Cycle Boat: $60/half hour
  • Paddle Boat: $46/hour
  • Kayak: $34/hour
  • Umbrella: $26/day

There Are Lockers to Store Your Valuables

Want to hit the beach? You can leave your valuables with your stuff, but that means having to keep an eye on things. Instead, there are lockers available for visitors. Head up to the rental station (where things like kayaks and snorkel gear are also for rent). The cost is $6 for a locker, along with a $6 deposit.

Need a Shower or Restroom? Yep, They Are Available

If you’re planning to hit the beach, it’s good to know that showers and restrooms are available to visitors for no charge. You’ll pass the restrooms as you make your way to the beach and go through a “tunnel” between two buildings. Showers are farther down the beach, past the restaurants. There is a line of about 6-8 stations where you can rinse off the sand and salt water. While they are nothing fancy (just a bunch of shower heads lined up), it feels amazing to get all the sand and salt off the body after a day at the beach.

Adventurous? Try “Fish Therapy”

We weren’t brave enough to try it, but many people were — and it was quite the spectacle. Near the beach (right next to the shower heads) is a small building that has several tanks of water lined up. As you walk toward it, you might think that people are just soaking their feet. But a closer inspection reveals there are fish in the tanks.

This is “fish therapy” where people soak their feet and dozens of tiny little fish eat all the dead skin cells. Predictably, the spot had many people talking and lots of people stopping to take a look. It’s something that you don’t see every day, so if you get the chance and have the urge, try it out. Those who tried it raved about it afterward.

Bring a Towel, Keycard, and ID From The Ship

mahogany bay roatan excursions

For a day at the beach you don’t need much, but there are a couple of important things to bring. First, you want to bring a beach towel from the ship. You are allowed to bring them with you (as long as you return it), and it’s something you’ll definitely want as we didn’t see any towels available at Mahogany Bay.

Second, you’ll want to bring your room keycard. This is scanned as you get off the ship (so the staff knows you are onshore when accounting for passengers) so there isn’t a real danger of forgetting it. But, you’ll also need to bring photo ID. The cards and ID are checked as you head to the beach and again as you go to return to the ship to ensure that you’re with the cruise and not a tourist who happened to wander into the wrong area.

Where can I go to see monkeys?

What I am looking for nice sandy beach and not rocky? In Aruba we rent a car and drive. just wondering if this is advisable in Rotan?

So if you are on Carnival, you’ll head to Mahogany Bay on Roatan, which is private area for passengers. There is a very nice sandy beach that you’ll see from the ship. If sailing to the other port on the island, then you can make your way to the west end of the island via taxi. I’m sure you could rent a car, but it might be easier just to pay a taxi driver to drive you around for the day.

My second home is on Roatan. One day when a ship was in port, I drove over to Mahogany Bay to check it out. I was able to sneak into the shopping area and looked around, purchasing a few tee shirts. But when I wanted to check out the beach area, I was barred from doing so. As far as I am concerned, that was Carnival’s loss. The one time I landed on Roatan with my friend on a cruise ship, it was with Norwegian and therefore was in Coxen Hole.

I agree with Michael above that this is my favourite island in the Caribbean, bar none. It is lush and tropical with jungle, as opposed to many that are little more than deserts. I tend to stay away from the tourist areas when ships are in port, and there are plenty of other beaches on-island that have few tourists most of the time. The roads sure have improved, especially where my home is, with both routes I can use now being concrete. I just hope that Roatan stays close to what it is now, and not like many of the islands that are just expensive tourist traps.

This is by far my favorite port in the western Caribbean. I have visited approximately 11 times and have to say, as much as there is things to do at the cruise center, venturing beyond the port is a must!

The beach at Mahogany By is man made, yes it’s a nice beach, but nothing like visiting the Little French Key and West Bay Beach.

Nice work on this post tanner, very thorough and informative!

15 Great Things To Do In Mahogany Bay, Roatan

Mahogany Bay Beach, near the cruise port

While many Caribbean islands have become commercialized and overrun with tourists, there are still hidden gems waiting to be discovered. One such treasure is Mahogany Bay, located on the island of Roatan off the coast of Honduras.

Roatan is the largest of the Bay Islands and is a popular destination for visitors. However, Mahogany Bay remains relatively undiscovered and offers a peaceful escape from the crowds.

The island is also home to Guanaja and Utila, both smaller and less visited than Roatan. While Western Caribbean cruises often stop at popular destinations like Grand Cayman and Cozumel, a visit to Mahogany Bay offers a unique and tranquil experience.

When arriving by cruise ship, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, and NCL dock at Coxen Hole on the eastern side. Alternatively, Princess, Holland America, Costa, Regent, and Carnival Cruise lines use the Mahogany Bay Cruise Center, located in Coxen Cove.

Arriving at the Mahogany Bay cruise port, on the Carnival Glory, a rusty shipwreck, a flying chair lift, and miles of sandy beach greeted me at sunrise.

Like many cruise ports, the modern welcome center is quite commercialized. But, outside of the cruise terminals and tourist hot spots, parts of Isla Roatan exude a primitive lifestyle. Although it’s obvious many of the locals live in poverty, they emit a sense of happiness with their simple lives.

What To Expect On Roatan Island?

Although many Spanish-speaking residents originated from Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, today, English is universally spoken. Being English, the ability to communicate eliminates stress, especially when ordering in restaurants.

While the lempira is the national currency of Honduras, most businesses accept the US dollar. It’s essential to carry some cash as smaller companies and taxi drivers do not accept credit cards.

Activities in Roatan: seeing a sloth, having a beach day, ziplining and riding the Flying chair

Since Isla Roatan, Honduras lays close to the equator; it experiences hot weather year-round. The dry season goes from February to June, but these are the hottest months to visit. November to December are the cooler months; however, these the wettest months.

With 3,000 mm of annual rainfall, downpours can happen during the rainy season. When  packing for the Caribbean , bring clothing made for natural fibers, a hat, and reef-safe sunscreen.

With rainfall and jungles, mosquitoes are rampant in places, so it’s best to use a mosquito repellent.  Like Mexico, it’s advisable not to drink tap water.

When eating at a restaurant, make sure the water is purified or order a drink in a bottle or can. Personally, I use a collapsible water bottle  which I fill on my ship before I disembark in ports.

While rental cars are available near the cruise ports, taxis are plentiful and inexpensive. I negotiated a rate of USD 40.00 for the whole day I was in port. My taxi driver took me to other parts of the island and waited for me while I participated in shore excursions.

Things To Do In Mahogany Bay, Roatan

Like Cozumel ,  Roatan lies next to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. Its rich ecosystem attracts snorkelers and divers globally to see its colorful corals and variety of fish. Sea turtles, nurse sharks, stingrays, and manatees populate these waters too.

Being a region with a rich exploration history, it’s no surprise shipwrecks are prominent due to shallow waters. If seeing a Spanish Galleon or exploring sunken treasure interests you, consider a diving excursion.

Without a diving certificate, tour operators provide snorkeling excursions, snuba, and glass-bottom kayaks, which are just as much fun. Beyond diving, there are lots to see and do on Roatan.

1. Ride The Flying Beach Chair

  • Location:  Outside the Mahogany Bay Cruise Center | Cost: USD 14.00 for adults USD 8.00 children (4 to 12 years)

Flying beach chair, Roatan

Mahogany Bay’s unique flying chair lift may look out of place on a beach. After all, it’s what we’ve come to expect on a ski hill.

However, the Magical Flying Beach Chair transports cruise passengers from the Roatan cruise port to Mahogany Beach. While the ride covers ¼ mile and easily walkable, the lift offers beautiful ocean and tree canopy views.

Being close to the cruise port, passengers have access to the white sand beach without traveling too far. Should you prefer a water activity, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, aqua cycles, and snorkel equipment are available for rent.

Take relaxation to the next level with a massage in an outdoor pavilion, complete with ocean wave sounds. If you want to connect with family, WiFi is reasonable at just USD 5.00.

2. Enjoy A Zipline Adventure

  • Location:  Outside the Mahogany Bay Cruise Center | Cost: USD 89.99 for adults USD 79.99 children

While  Cozumel’s port excursions  are centered around the ocean, Roatan has some adventurous activities. It has some of the best zipline parks in the Caribbean, and most are available at reasonable prices.

Ziplining in Roatan

The “Clip ‘N’ Zip” adventure, located outside the Mahogany Bay, Roatan cruise center, allows cruises to enjoy this adventurous activity within walking distance of their cruise ship.

The Clip ‘N’ Zip zipline has eleven zip lines ranging from 150 feet to 1,600 feet. This course offers one of the safest tours on the island, using three cables instead of two. So, enjoy soaring through the rainforest with a chance to see birds, iguanas, and agoutis.

At the end of the one-hour excursion, the last zip line travels over the water and ends at the beach. Since it’s located within steps of the cruise terminal, this zipline adventure commands the highest prices on the island.

Alternatively, Pirates of the Caribbean claim to be the number one zipline in Roatan. Their extreme zipline package has 15 long zip lines and costs USD 45.00 and includes the 15-minute transfer to and from the cruise ship.

Their extremely extreme package cost USD 65.00 and travels on extremely long ziplines. For instance, one line is 1980 feet long and 328 feet above ground. Both packages are on lines with an automated braking system. The braking system allows thrill-seekers to ride without wearing leather gloves to slow themselves down.

Other companies include King Kong Extreme Zipline, South Shore Canopy Zipline, and Mayan Eden. At Mayan Eden, zipliners can feed the monkeys, see a sloth and tour a butterfly sanctuary.

3. Take An Island Tour

  • Location:  French Cay | Cost: USD 40.00+

With pick-up and drop-off at Mahogany Bay, enjoy a day touring Roatan while learning its history and culture.

Local tour companies offer this island tour but booking with Daniel Johnson includes entrance to their Monkey and Sloth Hangout too. At USD 40.00 per person, it’s a budget-friendly option for an all-day excursion.

During the tour in an air-conditioned van, the driver will stop for plenty of photo opportunities and shopping in local boutiques. The tour includes the popular West End, Coxen Hole, West End Beach, and an option to stop at Las Palmas Resort for lunch.

Other stops may include the Roatan Rum Factory to sample rum and rum cakes and Rusty Fish Craft Market. The Rusty Fish eco-friendly store ingeniously recycles junk into new-found treasures.

4. Visit An Iguana Farm

  • Location:  Brooksy Point Rd, French Cay | Cost: USD 12.00

Located east of the cruise terminal, families will enjoy Arch’s Iguana and Marine Park, a hidden gem in Roatan. The family-owned business offers beautiful ocean views while admiring, feeding, and holding the resident iguanas.

Iguanas were once hunted and eaten as a protein source, to the point of almost becoming extinct. The iguana sanctuary opened in 1980 to protect the creatures and allow them to thrive.

In the park, the 4,000 iguanas roam freely and happily munch on leaves offered by visitors. In fact, it’s a bit of a feeding frenzy when the giant lizards see a person with food.

Feeding frenzy at Arch's Iguana and Marine Park

Everywhere you look, iguanas of different sizes and species crawl around quite lazily. While iguanas look intimidating with their spiny backs, they are actually gentle.

Although the iguanas are the park’s star attraction, you may also encounter parrots, monkeys, and scarlet macaws. Nearby, the oceanside enclosure has bass and hungry tarpon.

While the park isn’t huge, expect to spend an hour here and combine it with the sloth and monkey sanctuary nearby.

5. Swim With Dolphins

  • Location:  Bailey’s Key, off Anthony’s Key | Cost: USD 40.00+

Located on Bailey’s Key, Roatan Dolphin Encounter allows visitors to experience personal time with Atlantic Bottlenose dolphins.

Unlike most dolphin swim tours, these dolphins live in the ocean, not a cement tank. Dolphin Encounters have a variety of excursions, from basic facetime to the popular dolphin swim and snorkel.

During the thirty-minute dolphin encounter, participants have a chance to interact with dolphins while learning their behavior. While professionals take photos, you can take your camera for candid shots too.

The swim and snorkel excursion includes the encounter but an additional thirty minutes of free snorkeling with the intelligent mammals. Dolphins are spirited creatures that will play in your bubbles and mimic your actions.

Snorkeling freely in the ocean gives a feeling of being part of the pod. Cameras are not allowed during the free swim. However, the professional photos are high quality and available to purchase as a download.

6. Hug A Sloth At The Sloth Sanctuary

  • Location: French Cay | Cost: USD 13.00

What better way to enjoy a lazy day in the Caribbean than mingle with the world’s slowest tropical mammal, the sloth. Native to Central and South America, sloths spend their days in trees and sleep up to 18 hours a day.

Roatan sloth

AJ’s Monkeys and Sloths, and Daniel Johnson’s Monkey and Sloth Hangout are both located in the French Cay area.

While visitors are rarely allowed to hold a sloth, each visitor has a chance to hold one at the sanctuary. While the sloths have incredibly long nails, they won’t scratch or dig in. Just be very gentle holding the sloth.

You’ll also have a chance to hold a parrot, macaw, and monkey, as long as the monkey is willing.

Sloths are gentle creatures that always look like they’re smiling. At Daniel Johnson, travelers have the option to add on other activities, such as ziplining, snorkeling, and an island tour.

7. Spend The Day At West Bay Beach

  • Location:  West End, Roatan

When seeking the best beach in Roatan, pass on Mahogany Bay Beach in favor of West Bay Beach. As the name suggests, it’s located on the west side of Roatan and rated one of the best beaches globally.

With white sand, turquoise waters, and endless beachside patios, I could understand why readers voted it one of the best beaches.

With calm currents and crystal-clear water, West Bay offers the best snorkeling opportunity on Roatan, with spry coral and vibrant tropical fish. Whether you want to lay on a beach or take to the water, West Bay Beach has something for everyone.

The tranquil waters are perfect for young swimmers, but there are plenty of adventure tours for thrill-seekers.

West Bay Beach, Roatan

It takes approximately half an hour to access West Bay by taxi, and the drive is picturesque. Should there be more than one ship in port (as it was the day I visited), the beach area becomes quite crowded.

8. See The Jungle On An ATV

  • Location: West Bay Beach or West End | Cost: USD 85.00+

For the adventurous, explore Roatan’s jungle trails on an all-terrain vehicle. After a safety briefing and video presentation, hop aboard a four-wheeled chariot for a fun-filled adventure off the beaten path.

Pre-arranged tours include transfers to and from the cruise port and beach time. Excursions vary from three to five hours, depending on whether there’s a lunch stop.

During the ride, you’ll enjoy panoramic vistas from hilltops, rides through local villages, and some include an excursion through the Roatan mangroves. What better way to enjoy Roatan than with the wind in your hair and the sun on your back?

ATVs are easy to operate, a breeze to ride, and suitable for most travelers. Do note; participants may get dusty, dirty, or muddy. After all, this is an ATV adventure.

9. Relax At Little French Key

  •   Bailey’s Key, off Anthony’s Key | Cost: USD 59.00+

If you’re seeking a less crowded beach than Mahogany Bay, head over to Little French Key, Roatan’s gem. The Little French Key offers a paradise getaway on a private island just north of the Mahogany Bay Cruise Center.

Embrace the beauty of the Caribbean with turquoise waters, three oceanside restaurants, and aquatic sports.

Secluded Roatan beach

Activities include standup paddleboarding, snorkeling, kayaking, swimming with horses, or seeing the exotic wildlife at the animal rescue center. The basic discovery packages cost USD 59.00 but do not include food.

It’s best to upgrade to the island package, which consists of two drinks, a meal, snorkeling equipment, and the use of kayaks and paddleboards.

The USD 198.00 VIP package includes swimming with horses, a 30-minute massage, a VIP lounge, and a mini pig interaction for the ultimate adventure. If you’re familiar with swimming with pigs in the Bahamas, you’ll understand this bucket list interaction.

10. Take A Scuba Diving Lesson

  • Location:  West Bay Beach | Cost: USD 89.99+

The Island of Roatan has lots of water sports. You don’t need to be a certified diver to enjoy the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef off the Roatan coastline. A certified PADI English-speaking diving instructor teaches the course.

An introduction to the diving course begins with an hour of scuba orientation and a dive video. Then, participants test out those introductory diving skills in shallow waters.

Once each diver feels comfortable with their equipment, the instructor will head out to deeper waters for the initial dive. With a first dive in waters 40 feet deep, you’ll experience the underwater world as you’ve never seen before.

With access to deeper coral reefs, you’ll enjoy a variety of marine life, not seen at the surface. This beginner’s scuba lesson allows only four to six people per dive for safety reasons.

The half-day Roatan excursion requires a bathing suit, change of clothes, reef-safe screen, towel, and a waterproof camera to capture those memories.

If you’re already certified, you’ll have access to many diving spots in Roatan.

11. Visit Gumbalimba Park

  • Location: West Bay, Roatan | Cost: USD 30.00+

When arriving by cruise ship, you’ll have one day on Roatan. So, Gumbalimba Park makes a good one-day excursion with a bit of everything. Imagine the iguana farm, sloth sanctuary, and zipline adventure rolled into one. This is essentially Gumbalimba Park.

Obviously, the star of the park is the scenic trail through the rainforest which includes a rope suspension bridge. On the trail, macaws, iguanas, and white-faced monkeys roam freely through the park.

Scarlet macaw in Roatan

The monkeys are tame and accustomed to humans, so they quite happily climbed on people’s shoulders, arms, and heads. The photography opportunities are endless.

For an added adventure, upgrade to the zipline tour, which soars through a canopy of lush rainforest. The additional USD 15.00 for 15 lines of ziplining is a bargain compared to other tours.

Once you’ve completed your tour, relax on the nearby beach or participate in water activities until you want to return to your ship. Gumbalimba Park offers a fun-filled day for families and adults alike.

12. Enjoy Flora At Carambola Gardens

  • Location:  Sandy Bay across from Anthony’s Key | Cost: USD 10.00, USD 15.00 for a guided tour

If there are two things you must enjoy in Honduras, it’s the ocean and the jungle. With 40 acres of stunning flora, the Carambola Botanical Gardens provides an unforgettable experience for botanists and naturalists.

Its pristine botanical garden is a must for the avid photographer, and oodles of jungle trails are perfect for hiking and being one with nature.

Expect to spend an hour or two admiring the fruit trees, medicinal plants, and exotic orchids. During your walk, watch out for the monkeys scurrying along with limbs as you seek out the Chocolate Tree.

Star fruit growing on a tree

For adventurous individuals, hike Carambola Mountain for panoramic views of the rainforest, colorful flora, and the world’s second-largest coral reef. Along the hike, admire the “Iguana Wall,” a steep cliff that naturally protects the parrot and iguana species.

13. Go Parasailing

  • Location:  West Bay Beach | Cost: USD 70.00+

While Roatan, Honduras, is unbelievably beautiful, seeing it from the sky makes it extra special. From Mahogany Bay, head over to Roatan Parasail which operates out of West Bay Beach.

So, soaring over one of the world’s best beaches is an adrenaline activity you need to experience.

While the tour usually lasts an hour, the boat carries several people, all taking turns with the parachute. Depending on the number of participants, flying time ranges from ten to twelve minutes.

Although this may seem short, it’s enough time to savor the incredible panoramic views from high in the sky.

I’ve parasailed a few times in different places. But my most memorable experience was a tandem parasail in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The tour is relatively safe as long as the operator maintains the equipment and keeps their distance from other vessels.

Combine your parasailing tour with a day at West Bay Beach for the perfect day in Roatan, Honduras.

14 Chill On The Beach

If you’ve had a few busy days visiting other ports, Mahogany Bay provides the ideal destination to have a relaxing day.

Cabanas at Mahogany Bay Beach

While Mahogany Bay features a man-made beach, the waters are warm and there’s plenty of space to grab a lounger. For those who need to “connect,” you can purchase Wi-Fi for USD 5.

The beach area has souvenir shops, good restaurants, and bars to great drinks.

15. Take A Horseback Ride

  • Location: West Bay Beach or cruise terminal | Cost: USD 69.99+

For those that love the ocean and horses, too, Roatan offers the perfect shore excursion. The horseback ride and swim take participants on a trail ride that ends at the beach.

Roatan’s coast is gorgeous and the ideal place to ride the rescue horses for a refreshing dip in the ocean. Just in case you’re curious, horses are excellent swimmers.

The handlers are experienced, fun and make this tour an over-the-top excursion. Riders are required to wear close-toed shoes, which are available for rental if you’ve worn flip-flops. Lockers are available too.

Horseback riding is suitable for all, even those who have never been on a horse before. A photographer takes pictures throughout the excursion, which are emailed for a small fee.

Final Thoughts

As you can see, Roatan is a paradise isle of monkeys, iguanas, sloths, and an underwater world with one of the best reef systems.

From water to land, there’s no end to the vacationer’s activities. Let’s not forget the food because baleadas, a dish comprised of flour wraps with cheese, black beans, avocado, and sour cream, is a traditional Honduran favorite.

During my one day in Roatan, I rented a taxi for the day and toured the island. My tour included shopping in Coxen Hole, West Bay Beach, Ziplining, and seeing monkeys, sloths, and iguanas.

This budget-friendly isle allowed me to experience all of this for under USD 100.00 per person. When will you discover the beauty of Isla Roatan?

Things to do at the Mahogany Bay Cruise Center

One of the reasons Roatan is such a popular destination for many cruise guests is that you can have a fun day without ever leaving the port area.

When your cruise ship arrives in the port of Roatan, the first thing you will see is the 20-acre welcome center. Here, you can shop for souvenirs, grab some food, or meet with your ship-sponsored Roatan cruise excursions.

1. Free Beach Day

If you are looking for a beach day, you can head to the beautiful Mahogany Bay Beach. This is a man-made beach, but offers a beautiful sandy bay, with white sand and decent snorkeling opportunities.

You can also play beach volleyball and enjoy water activities.

To get to the beach you have a free option and a paid option. The free option is walking along the nature trail to get to the beach.

Once there, you can take advantage of free lounge chairs and beach mats.

2. Ride a Magical Flying Chair

If you are looking for a fun way to get to the beach, be sure and upgrade to ride on a magical flying beach chair.

The Magical Flying Chair is a 10-minute ride that takes you 67 feet in the air above crystal-clear waters, over the treetops, and directly to the white sand beach.

The fee to ride the chair lift is $14 for adults, $8 for kids 4-12, and free for kids under 3. The fee allows a day pass with unlimited rides. Look for the pink building at the welcome center for lift tickets.

Things To Do From Mahogany Bay, Isla Roatan

If you are like me, the first thing you want to do when visiting a popular port of call is to get the heck away from the cruise terminal!

I love to book with local tour operators whenever possible to explore local restaurants, and local culture, help support the local economy, and really escape the crowds.

Luckily, Roatan is the perfect place to get out and explore! If you book an excursion that is not affiliated with your cruise line it is a good idea to check reviews and do your research.

I use Trip Advisor to check reviews. I also book with companies I trust such as Shore Excursion Group , and Viator .

See Roatan Shore Excursions Here

When you book an excursion in Roatan with one of the local tour companies you’ll need to exit the cruise center to meet up with them.

To do this, walk through the main shopping area and out the gate. You’ll take a short walk down a hill and see all of the tour guides waiting for you.

They are allowed to drop you off in the cruise center though, so after your excursion, you’ll be able to hop right back on your cruise ship or do a bit of shopping.

So, if you do get away from the port and want to explore Roatan, these are some of the best things to do!

3. Daniel Johnson’s Monkey and Sloth hangout

This is one of the best excursions I have ever done, not just on Roatan, but in any of our travels!

My kids still talk about it, and I’ve booked numerous clients on excursions here, and they all name it as their favorite cruise day too!

If the idea of snuggling with a cuddly sloth, and playing with cheeky monkeys named after Jersey Shore actors sounds fun, you can read about our experience and get more information on Daniel Johnson by reading this post .

The tour ends at the West Bay where you can chill on the most popular white-sand beach on the island. This whole sightseeing tour covers most of the West Side of Roatan and the journey back to Mahogany Bay is only 40 minutes long.

Certified Dolphin Dive

Diving with Dolphins is not something you can do every day, so why not take the opportunity and see these lovely creatures in their natural environment. The excursion starts with a short ride to Roatan Institute for Marine Sciences where you will go with a boat together with a dive guide just outside the reef. Travelers have 45 minutes to play, photograph, and watch the dolphins. One-tank dive per person to a reef wall is included in the tour package.
