Special Group Tours

Special Group Tours are reviewed on a case-by-case basis and considered within the context of our ongoing event schedule. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we review requests.

At this time, we no longer have availability for group tours for the Spring semester.

General guidelines

  • Group size should be anywhere from 15-45 people , which includes students and chaperones.
  • There should be at least 1 chaperone for every 10 students.
  • Special Group Tours are not offered when the University is closed. Please refer to our Academic Calendar .
  • We ask that you send in Special Group Tour requests  at least two weeks in advance of the date that you would like to schedule your visit.
  • Special Group Tours are geared toward students who are preparing to apply for and attend college. Due to high demand, we are unable to accommodate Special Group Tours for elementary and middle school students. Please feel free to download our Self-Guided Walking Tour , which you may use to navigate the campus at your convenience.

Preparing for your tour

  • “Hurricane Season” lasts from June – October and sporadic rainstorms are common.
  • Admission staff may exercise discretion and cancel the walking portion of the Special Group Tour due to inclement weather. Should this occur, we will provide you with a Self-Guided Walking Tour to navigate at your convenience.
  • We are located in a sub-tropical climate, the sun tends to be very strong, even on cloudy days. We recommend all visitors wear sunscreen.

Arriving for your tour

  • We recommend arriving at least 15 minutes prior to your scheduled tour time. Please note that if you arrive more than 15 minutes late for your scheduled tour time, your Special Group Tour will be canceled due to limited student and/or staff availability.
  • Please check-in at the front desk of the Office of Undergraduate Admission, which is located in the Whitten University Center .
  • If, on the day of your Special Group Tour, you find that you are running late or are in need of directions, please call us at 305-284-6000 or email [email protected] .

Directions and parking

  • Our campus is located right off of U.S. Highway 1 in Coral Gables, Florida. For directions, please  click here .
  • Please plan on parking in the Pavia Garage if you are arriving by car.
  • If arriving by bus, please contact Parking Events with your group name, charter name and visit date no later than 48 hours prior to your arrival at [email protected] .

If you would like to reschedule or cancel your Special Group Tour, or if you have any questions or concerns, please contact [email protected]

Note: Cancellations must be communicated to us at least one week before the confirmed date.

Registration Guide

For details on registering review the following documents:

Please be advised that First-Year students must meet with their advisors to register for classes.

The Engineering Advising Office is responsible for advising first-year and sophomore students. Dr. Ram Narsimhan, Ms. Tish Broadhurst, Ms. Rita Suarez-Twigg, Ms. David Clay, and Mr. Christopher Carrasco are here to serve as a resource and help you with any questions, problems etc. — no matter how small — that you might have. All students should read “ Information for New Student’s Registration in the College of Engineering ” detailing the process of advising and registration from the college of Engineering.

Academic Advising

All engineering students during their first and sophomore years are advised in the College of Engineering Undergraduate Advising Office located in Room 243. This office deals with all the incoming first-year students during the period before the students enroll at the University of Miami too. The advising office makes sure all the new first-year students are placed in the appropriate classes.

All incoming transfer students also spend at least a semester at the Undergraduate Advising office. During the period the office reviews all the transfer credits that were evaluated and entered into Canelink to determine the equivalent class at the University of Miami. When the students have completed about half their curriculum, the Undergraduate Advising office transfers their files to the department, where a faculty member will advise the student until they graduate.

  • Please read the “Information for New Student’s Registration in the College of Engineering” and then fill out the “Information Form” carefully. Please e-mail it to  [email protected]  as an attachment. This information will help us in selecting classes for you.
  • The Engineering Advising office will register all incoming first-year students . We will do it after we have your Information Form. So please send this to us as soon as possible.

Additional Advising Information

You and every incoming student in the College of Engineering are in the IMPACT (Integrated Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry/Communication Track) program. Students in this program take all/most of the classes together. This helps the first-year students to get to know each other much more quickly than would happen otherwise. This facilitates students seeking each other’s help in learning as well as coping with the transition from high school to university. The students form a learning community, which enhances their university experience and provides a support system during their first year. The class groups are decided based on the mathematics class into which the student has been placed. The mathematics class is decided based on the student’s ALEKS Math Placement Assessment scores.

Mathematics

* Domestic Students – Newly admitted student’s Math Placement will be determined based on the SAT or ACT scores that have been submitted. If you would like to place in a higher level, you may choose to take the ALEKS Math Placement exam.  Visit here  for the Placement Guide and proctored testing dates and times.

* International Students – International students will be required to complete the ALEKS Math Placement. Knowing that the transition to a US academic setting can be challenging, this will ensure that your enrollment is tailored to your abilities and will maximize your chances of academic success.  Visit here  for the Placement Guide and proctored testing dates and times.

  • In order to be placed in Calculus class, you need a strong background in Algebra and Trigonometry
  • Students who already have Calculus I credit from AP, IB (Higher Level), GCE or dual enrollment  do not  have to take the ALEKS Math Placement Assessment. Please send the engineering advising office a copy of your scores.

Please send the engineering advising office the scores of the AP/IB (HL) tests you took in your first-year, sophomore and junior year at high school. For the AP/IB (HL) tests you are taking this year, you will need to make a judgment about the potential for receiving credit. Please make sure you accurately fill out the information form and e-mail it to the advising office. Let us know which exams you have or will have taken. Upon receipt of the results, please inform the Engineering Advising office by e-mail at [email protected] . You may check the AP/IB (HL) score tables online in order to determine the exam scores necessary for the awarding of University of Miami credit for specific courses.

To have AP and IB (HL) scores evaluated for UM credit, you must request that your scores be sent directly to the UM Office of Admission from the College Board or from your regional IB office---a notation on the high school transcript is not sufficient.

All official test score reports should be sent to: University of Miami, Office of Admission, and P.O. Box 249117, Coral Gables, FL 33124-9117.

Dual Enrollment/Transfer credits

If you took a course for college credit, you must submit official transcripts to the UM Office of Admission from the issuing College or University. A listing on the high school transcript is not sufficient to award college credit. A minimum grade of "C" is required for consideration of credit in all dual enrollment and transfer courses. Please note: All grades earned in these courses are part of your permanent record. Official transcripts for credits earned from any college/university should be sent to: University of Miami, Office of Admission, and P.O. Box 249117, Coral Gables, FL 33124-9117.

You can check on CaneLink for the transfer credits the University has received.  Here is the link to Cane Link Student Guide .

Students at the College of Engineering must fulfill the Areas of Knowledge requirement by completing three cognates, one from each of the three areas of the university curriculum: Arts & Humanities; People & Society; and Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics.  For students in the College of Engineering,  their engineering major will count as a cognate in Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics.   These students only must complete a cognate in People & Society and Arts & Humanities.

  • All approved cognates are visible in a cognate search engine (a https://cognates.miami.edu/ )

For a complete list of classes, you will take in your major by semester, please visit College of Engineering Bulletin and click on the appropriate major.

First-Year Writing I (WRS 105) is a required course for all engineering students.

  • Your placement in English Composition in the University of Miami is determined according to your scores on AP or IB tests.
  • Should you receive the appropriate AP or IB or GCE scores, you will NOT need to take WRS 105 or WRS 106 and will earn 3 credits each. AP or IB or GCE CREDITS FOR WRS 106 CAN SUBSTITUTE FOR WRS 107 (First-Year Writing II: STEM) IN THE COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING.

Should you receive an exemption from (not credit in) WRS 105 through appropriate SAT/ACT scores, you will still need to take 6 credits in writing in the COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING.

Most engineering students must take at least one Chemistry course with laboratory and at least three University physics courses with two laboratories. During your first year you will take the first physics or chemistry depending on your math placement. You must be placed in Calculus I or above for you to be registered for the first University Physics.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).

UF threatens student protesters with suspension, banishment from campus

An unidentified University of Florida campus police officer watches over about 50 pro-Palestinian protesters who demonstrated on campus

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Florida threatened pro-Palestinian student demonstrators with suspension and banishment from campus for three years if they violate a host of rules of behavior over protests that continued for a second day late Thursday.

The university said employees or professors caught breaking its rules would be fired.

Some of the rules were specific, such as prohibiting protesters from using bullhorns or speakers to amplify their voices, possessing weapons or protesting inside buildings on campus. Other rules were far more vague, such as one that said “no disruption,” or another that said signs must be carried in hands at all times.

Campus police circulated the list of prohibited activities late Thursday as about 50 protesters gathered for a second day of demonstrations. A university spokeswoman early Friday confirmed the authenticity of the document. It said permitted activities included “speech,” “expressing viewpoints” and “holding signs in hands.” It wasn’t clear whether temporarily dropping a sign during hours-long protests would end in an arrest or trespass order.

Other prohibited activities included littering; camping or use of tents, sleeping bags or pillows; blocking anyone’s path. They also included “no sleeping” on a campus where students often doze in the sun between classes.

The letter was not signed or dated but indicated it was sent from the university’s Division of Student Life. The university is a public institution and its campus is generally not restricted.

The protesters late Thursday urged the university administration to end investments with publicly traded companies that sell weapons or military technology to Israel. A significant number of campus police officers watched nearby but did not immediately intervene. A large sign erected on two tall poles that read, “It’s not a war, it’s a genocide,” had been removed late Thursday.

Campus police did not conduct any arrests Thursday or early Friday, according to county jail records. A police spokesman, Capt. Latrell Simmons, said the demonstrators were cooperating with law enforcement.

The scene at UF, home to the largest percentage of Jewish college students in America, was so far a peaceful contrast to demonstrations at some U.S. universities this week, where police arrested demonstrators, put some in zip ties and used an electrical device to stun at least one at Emory University in Atlanta.

UF is home to about 55,000 students, including about 6,500 Jewish students. There were no classes Thursday or Friday this week, so that students can prepare for final exams starting next week.

The two days of relatively mild protests at UF also have occurred in a different political environment than at other schools. Staunch allies of Israel, Florida’s governor, Ron DeSantis, and UF’s new university president, Ben Sasse, have openly warned they would not tolerate violent pro-Palestinian protests on college campuses.

Last year, DeSantis tried unsuccessfully to ban two pro-Palestinian student groups at UF and the University of South Florida in Tampa, Students for Justice in Palestine, after accusing them of providing material support to Hamas. Citing First Amendment protections, the universities have allowed the groups to continue operating on their campuses.

DeSantis this week said pro-Palestinian student protesters should be expelled from their universities, and that those who are international students should have their visas canceled. Sasse, the former Republican senator from Nebraska, has said, “we will absolutely be ready to act if anyone dares to escalate beyond peaceful protest.”

The protesters this week demanded that the university prohibit speakers affiliated with Israel’s military and promise not to suspend or arrest students engaged in peaceful protests. The former demand is a hot-button among conservatives who control Florida’s Legislature, who have imposed new rules requiring that colleges and universities host guest speakers with a range of political viewpoints.

The protesters also said a student oversight committee should approve future investments by the university. UF’s endowment is worth more than $2.5 billion. The university said the money supports faculty and students, including professorships and financial aid for undergraduates, graduate fellowships, and student life and activities.

A similar protest on the campus on Wednesday drew some Jewish counter protesters. Campus police kept the groups apart. There was no counterprotest Thursday.

Carlos Alemany, 21, a political science major from Windemere near Orlando, said he hoped the protest would educate others about the brutality of what was happening in Gaza, where Israel has killed more than 34,000 Palestinians since Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel last October.

Alemany compared the killings in Gaza to a holocaust, a destruction or slaughter on a mass scale. The term has a particular meaning among Jews, who suffered the murder of 6 million people by Nazis during the Holocaust of World War II.

“There is a technical term for the word holocaust,” Alemany said. “And this is exactly what it is.”

Kenise Jackson, 20, a marketing sophomore, attended the demonstrations in solidarity with hundreds of college students who have recently been arrested at Pro-Palestinian rallies across the U.S and call for a ceasefire to the Israel-Gaza conflict.

"That's ultimately what I want – for people to stop dying," she said.
