Have you ever wondered what it would be like to sail on one of the cruise ships that call at the Seattle waterfront? Spring is the time when the cruise lines offer short trips as they prepare for the summer sailing season. Norwegian Cruise Line is offering a two-day, round-trip Seattle dinner and dance cruise May 2-4 on the Norwegian Pearl. Inside cabins start at $259 per person (double occupancy), which adds up to $356 per person with taxes and fuel surcharges, for the whole trip. Go to www.ncl.com and use the “Find a Cruise” feature to get details.

Best Cruises from Seattle
- North America
- Panama Canal
No fewer than seven major cruise lines offer cruises from Seattle, Washington. This density of cruise options is no coincidence—a fantastic destination in and by itself, Seattle also boasts a super-strategic location on the glorious Puget Sound.
The city is home, for example, to North America’s fourth-largest container port just because of its geography. Cruises from Seattle, too, are extremely popular thanks to its proximity to Alaska, one of the world’s greatest destinations for nature and expedition cruises . Alternatively, you can also head south to warmer regions exploring America’s stunning West Coast, or sail west to the paradise that is Hawaii.
Whichever region you feel like exploring, Seattle is good place to start your journey. It offers access to literally the entire Pacific, coast and islands included.
When researching the best Seattle cruises, you’ll notice that the majority of them are week-long cruises to Alaska. Together with Vancouver, BC, Seattle is a major departure point for journeys to America’s “Last Frontier”. And it’s this, more than anything else, that makes Seattle such a popular cruise port.
Seven of the world’s largest cruises lines—and cruise ships—have a base in Seattle. They’re the following.
- Royal Caribbean
- Princess Cruises
- Celebrity Cruises
- Holland America Line
- Oceania Cruises
Port of Seattle Cruise Terminals
In fact, Seattle cruises are so popular the Port of Seattle doesn’t have one but two cruise terminals. The main cruise terminal is the Smith Cove Cruise Terminal at Pier 91 . Located on the northern end of the city’s waterfront, about two miles north of the city center, it is the home port of five of the above-mentioned Seattle cruise lines and a total of eight major cruise ships:
- Royal Caribbean Ovation of the Seas
- Carnival Legend
- Ruby Princess
- Star Princess
- Celebrity Solstice
- Holland America Amsterdam
- Holland America Oosterdam
- Holland America Eurodam
Along Seattle’s downtown waterfront, you’ll find the second cruise terminal, the Bell Street Cruise Terminal at Pier 66 . This is the most convenient location of the two, within walking distance from many downtown attractions such as the Space Needle, the Seattle Aquarium and Pike Place Market. It is the Seattle home of two cruise lines and three ships:
- Norwegian Bliss
- Norwegian Joy
- Oceania Regatta
Alaska Cruises from Seattle
The main cruise destination from Seattle is Alaska, there’s no question about that. It is the very reason for Seattle’s existence as a cruise port. Seattle-Alaska cruises are a thing of magic. Heading out of the Puget Sound and into the Pacific, you’ll sail along the stunning coast of the Pacific Northwest, through the Inside Passage and toward the majestic landscapes of Alaska.
The most popular Alaska cruises are 7-day round-trip voyages, which typically include three or four ports. There’s little variety in these types of cruises between different cruise lines. Generally, you’ll stop in coastal towns like Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Victoria, BC, where you can experience local culture and explore the region’s history.
These cruises are also very much about nature, though, and they’ll include magnificent places like the Tracy Arm Fjord and Glacier Bay National Park . Good examples of what you can expect from this type of cruise are the 7-day Inside Passage Cruise from Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean’s 7-night Alaska Glacier Cruise .
Although most Seattle to Alaska cruises are week-long round-trips, there are also one-way options available. This gives you a more in-depth experience of what Alaska is all about, and the itinerary will be more extensive, going as far northwest as Seward and Kenai Fjords National Park. Some, such as the Holland America Seattle Single Denali Cruise, even include an on-shore excursion to epic Denali National Park.
For even more Alaskan exploration, you should check out Holland America’s 12-day Seattle Double Denali Cruise, which includes two days in Denali National Park and a flight back to Seattle. Another longer itinerary is offered on Oceania’s 10-day Seattle to Seattle Glacial Adventures Cruise.
West Coast Cruises from Seattle
Seattle is also a great place for so-called “mini-cruises”. These sailings are typically between one and five days long and typically take in the coastline north of Seattle, in British Columbia. For a quick cruise experience, the 1-day Pacific Coastal Cruise from Holland America travels from Seattle to Vancouver.
Southbound cruises from Seattle are longer, usually about 7 days, and sail along the gorgeous Oregon and California coastlines.
If you’re after a much longer cruise, the 20-day Seattle to Miami Colorful Caribbean Cruise from Oceania is definitely worth looking into. This amazing one-way voyage takes in the entire west coast of the United States and Central America, crossing the Panama Canal and sailing through the Caribbean.
Pacific Ocean Cruises from Seattle
A third cruise destination that’s reachable from Seattle is Hawaii. Note that there aren’t as many options available for Seattle to Hawaii cruises as there are in other West Coast ports like San Francisco or San Diego. Arguably the best available voyage of this kind is Holland America’s 17-day Circle Hawaii Cruise, which departs from and returns to Seattle.

Mini And Sampler Cruises – All You Need To Know
Mini cruises or cruises under seven days offer a chance to test the waters at a cost-effective price. Three- or four-day escapes provide a long weekend getaway without cashing in your vacation time. But are these sampler cruises worth it? And where do they sail?
Obviously, short cruises can’t sail as far as longer seven-day itineraries. However, they’re perfect for a celebratory event. So, whether it’s a birthday, anniversary, or engagement, consider booking a mini cruise to create enduring memories.
Short itineraries aren’t offered everywhere in the world. So, if you’ve never cruised before, a short cruise allows you to sample life on a cruise ship. During your cruise, you can tour the ship, stay in a stateroom and see what’s available on board.
What’s A Mini Cruise?
Sampler cruises are typically two to four days, although a few are available for just a one-nighter. Short cruises are sometimes the result of ships repositioning from one area to another.
Consequently, these cruises aren’t scheduled frequently. These shorter itineraries are suited to those who live near the cruise port. After all, no one wants to pay for an expensive flight to take a one, two, or three-day cruise.
Because of the pandemic, some short cruises sail to nowhere or just around the harbor and back. While you won’t have the opportunity to visit an unforeseen port, you can still enjoy a break from everyday life. I have taken a 5-day Pacific Northwest cruise in a balcony stateroom for USD 149.
Sampler cruises are perfect for families on a budget. If you can’t afford that 7-day itinerary in the Caribbean, a shorter vacation comes at a more affordable price. Also, cruise vacations include kids’ clubs and babysitting so that parents can enjoy some free time.
One of the advantages of shorter cruises is less planning. You don’t need to research every port of call, but there’s usually only one or two ports. So, if you’re game for a short getaway, here are some sampler cruises worth considering.
One Day Cruises
While many might not consider a one-day cruise, it’s a chance to experience the amenities of a cruise ship. You’ll have restaurant choices, entertainment, swimming pools, saunas, and much more. One-day itineraries usually require passengers to embark at one port and disembark at another.
Cruise passengers can sometimes find these cruises between Vancouver, Canada, and Seattle, Washington. As ships jockey for Alaska season, they sometimes switch their departure port by moving from one port to another.
For under USD 100, you can enjoy a night on a cruise ship for less than a hotel stay. Bear in mind, that your cruise also includes food and entertainment. So, it’s a fantastic deal!
Additionally, you can select a Mediterranean one-day cruise, which sails from Athens to Kusadasi. With only one night onboard, past passengers may want to try out a suite or more expensive stateroom. It’s a chance to savor the luxury at a price you can afford.
Two Night Mini Cruises
For one extra night, cruisers can sail to one port and back again. Although, some two-day cruises sail to nowhere. Currently, Singapore and Hong Kong offer two-day cruises to nowhere.
The following sampler cruises include a full day in a port except for Europe. Europe cruises sail from Hamburg to Southampton or vice versa. CocoCay or other cruise lines’ private islands are excellent choices for children. Also, with plenty of amenities on board, there’s no time for boredom.
Long-time cruisers sometimes use these mini cruises to attain loyal points faster. Some cruise lines give points on the number of cruises sailed instead of the number of days cruised.
For instance, passengers sailing with Princess can attain Platinum after six cruises. If you only booked 3-day cruises, you would gain Platinum status (third level) in 18 days.
Alternatively, Celebrity cruise passengers need to sail 100 days in a balcony stateroom to attain Elite status (third level).
Long-time cruisers use a shorter cruise to experience a ship-within-a-ship suite . With a short itinerary, that suite you couldn’t normally afford becomes cost-effective.
Three Night Mini Cruises
Three-day cruises are perfect for that long weekend, providing the cruise falls on the correct days. Cruises that start at one port and end at another usually come with rock bottom pricing. However, if you prefer to return to the same embarkation port, there are many choices.
When you consider that the first and last days are embarkation and debarkation, three-day cruises are more desirable. A three-day itinerary could include two ports if the ports are close together.
I took a three day cruise on the Crown Princess ship , cruising solo from Seattle to Vancouver. By cruising solo in a double occupancy cabin, I gained double loyalty points.
Also, I enjoyed a sunny day in the Victoria, BC, cruise port.
The shorter vacation is ideal for those who practice minimalist packing and don’t want the headache of planning. I’ve done a few short cruises out of Vancouver and boarded with just a carry-on luggage from Level8.
Four Day Getaway Cruises
Four-day cruises give an excellent snippet of an area without the commitment of a 7-day itinerary. However, the prices vary greatly. I have seen 4-day cruises advertised as low as USD 120 in a balcony stateroom. Others sell for over USD 800, depending on the itinerary, cruise line, and cruise ship.
When shopping for a short cruise, lines like Disney, Hurtigruten, and Silversea command higher prices. Also, expect to pay more during peak times such as Christmas, New Year, and summer months.
Five Day Mini Cruises
For me, a five-day cruise is a sweet spot. It’s not so short that you feel like you haven’t been anywhere. And it’s not a full seven-day sail. Most 5-day itineraries are roundtrip cruises, returning to the same port. Most cruise passengers prefer a roundtrip itinerary. Should you live within driving distance of the port, there is no need for an airline ticket.
The following are some return 5-day cruises offered by Norwegian, Hurtigruten, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Silversea, Carnival, Disney, Azamara, Cunard, and Celebrity Cruises.
Alternatively, these one-way cruises sail from one port and debark in another. Remember to factor in the cost of an airline ticket when selecting one of these cruises.
The Pros and Cons Of Sampler Cruises
If you’re looking to sail a mini cruise, there are some things to consider.
Pros Of A Short Itinerary
- They are suited to those who live close to the embarkation port. Without an airline ticket purchase, passengers can take a short escape for bargain pricing.
- Cruises under six days come with low prices. However, if want a longer itinerary, consider booking back-to-back mini-cruises.
- It’s a great way to “test the waters” if you’re new to cruising.
- Without the commitment of a longer itinerary, you can enjoy a shorter cruise on a long weekend.
- It’s a great way to try a different cruise line.
- Suites and higher-level staterooms are more affordable.
- You can pack light.
- They are great for racking up cruise line loyalty points.
Cons Of A Shorter Cruise
- Some itineraries cruise to nowhere. Although, if you love sea days, you may consider this a plus.
- Cruise ships can’t travel too far from the embarkation port.
- Weekend cruises can attract a “party” crowd, so your escape may not be a quiet one.
- The selection of itineraries is limited.
- Cruise lines don’t usually offer shortened itineraries on their newest or grandest ships.
- You might not have a formal or “chic” night. Some may consider this a pro, though.
- You may require a visa to some countries.
- You may not feel like you’ve had a vacation.
- If you don’t live near the embarkation port, the cost of the airline ticket can exceed the savings of the cruise.
Which Mini Cruises Are Preferable?
When reviewing shortened itineraries, you may select a cruise based on price and where you live. However, you might want to avoid some cruises for the following reasons.
Pacific Coastal cruises are popular for those who live in the Pacific Northwest. In fact, many first-time cruises choose one as a way to test out a cruise vacation.
However, the Pacific Coastal cruises often experience rough water, causing seasickness. Avoid a cruise up and down the Pacific Coast if you can’t handle the choppy seas.
Unless you hold a Chinese passport, you may want to pass on a cruise that stops in China. Chinese visas cost USD 140 per person, which may turn your inexpensive cruise into a costly one.
Alaska cruises that sail for less than five days don’t generally visit a fjord or glacier. If the purpose of your Alaska itinerary is to see ice, choose a 7-day itinerary instead.
If you have children, you might choose a private island itinerary due to its amenities. With waterslides, pools, and endless sun-drenched activities, you’ll never run out of things to do. It’s like a Disneyland vacation cruise-style.
Australian itineraries are perfect for locals because it allows for a break without needing a visa. Equally as enticing are the Mexico cruises if you live near an embarkation port. In winter, you can escape to warmer waters on a long weekend.
Final Thoughts
All things considered, mini cruises aren’t for everyone. While I’m willing to take shorter itineraries, I live near the Vancouver cruise terminal , which doesn’t offer many of these shorter cruises. However, if I lived in Florida, I’d welcome these bargain getaways whenever I could travel.
Since we’re still in a pandemic, the need for a PCR test or antigen test before your cruise, may deter you from going. Have you taken a sampler cruise, and what are your thoughts?
Happy travels ~ Karen

Seattle Cruise Ports
Two downtown cruise terminals make sailing out of Seattle, Washington an extremely attractive travel option for passengers looking for the convenience of cruising from a U.S. based port.
Pier 91 is located slightly north of downtown, while Pier 66 is located in the center of the waterfront on Alaskan Way.
Visitors arrive by plane at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SeaTac). Regardless of the pier you are leaving from, the ride from the airport will be from 20 to 30 minutes depending on the traffic. A taxi will cost roughly $30 to Pier 66 or $40 to Pier 91 again depending on traffic. The Gray Line shared shuttle from SeaTac to Pier 91 is $26 per person and can be reserved at the desk located in the atrium just beyond the baggage carousel 1.
There are two convenient parking garages for cruise passengers. The Bell Street Pier garage is located across Alaskan Way from the cruise terminal. It offers 1,500 spaces of covered, secure parking at a cost of approximately $20 per day (reserve online for a prepay discount). Complimentary luggage and shuttle service is available in the designated cruise parking area.
The Smith Cove Terminal parking has 1000 secure parking spaces at a cost of approximately $25 per day (reserve online for a prepay discount). The parking lot is a short distance away from the terminal building. A shuttle is available from the parking area to the terminal building.
Pre or Post Cruise Stay in Seattle, Washington
Seattle sits on the shores of Puget Sound nestled between two magnificent mountain ranges. On clear days the Cascade Mountains are visible on the eastern horizon and the Olympic Mountains loom across the Sound to the west. The snowcapped volcanic peak of Mount Rainier dominates the southern view. This lovely city offers a perfect mix of urban attractions and outdoor recreation. Below are some places you won’t want to miss on your visit.
Pioneer’s Square: This historic district of Seattle offers a wealth of art galleries, bookstores, antique shops, cool restaurants, and buzzing nightclubs within easy walking distance of most downtown Seattle hotels. The cobblestone streets and horse-drawn carriages are a reminder of life a century ago.
Pikes Place Market: Situated just above the waterfront, the market, founded in 1907, is popular with natives and tourists alike. It features farmers and merchants that offer fresh vegetables, seafood, food bars, cafes, restaurants, crafts, art work, and gifts from booths, stalls and shops, including the original Starbucks.
The Future of Flight Aviation Center & Boeing Tour: A cutting-edge facility featuring interactive exhibits and displays where you can digitally design your own airplane. Watch a brief movie about Boeing in the high definition Boeing Theater, then hop a bus and travel a few short minutes to the Boeing factory where you’ll go behind the massive hanger doors to witness the inner workings of the world’s largest airplanes.
Mount Rainier National Park: A visit to this picturesque park offers excellent opportunities for scenic drives, hiking, and mountain climbing. Most roads are open from late May to early October and all provide stunning views and access to a variety of hiking trails and other sites. Many tour companies offer day trips from Seattle if time restraints keep you from spending more than a few days in the area.

Launched in 2010, Norwegian Epic was the first cruise ship in the industry to feature studio accommodations for solo travelers. Norwegian Cruise Line offers this category on nine of the 19 ships in its fleet, including the newest ship, Norwegian Viva. These cabins, at an average size of 100 square feet, are designed and priced with the solo traveler in mind. MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises offers interior and balcony solo cabins for single cruisers on its Meraviglia-class ships: the MSC Meraviglia, Bellissima, Grandiosa, Virtuosa and the newest vessel in the fleet, MSC Euribia. The second-newest ship, MSC World Europa, has 28 cabins – 10 Studio Interior and 18 Studio Ocean View staterooms – designed specifically for solo travelers. MSC World America, set to debut in 2025, will also feature the solo studio staterooms.
During voyages with MSC Cruises , single cruisers are invited to a complimentary, hosted cocktail party to mix and mingle with other solo travelers. The daily program is also an excellent source to discover additional activities, entertainment and opportunities to meet other cruisers. You'll have onboard special events like the themed 70s-inspired Flower Party and the White Party, where the ship is decked out in festive white decor and guests don their best white attire. In addition, there are various sports tournaments, or you can show off your culinary expertise during a MasterChef competition.
MSC's Caribbean and Bahamas cruises departing from Miami and New York City feature an overnight visit to Ocean Cay, the line's private island and marine reserve. If you're a solo traveler and a member of AARP, Holland America is now the exclusive cruise benefit provider to AARP's members. Solo cruisers will have access to an AARP member-only onboard credit that ranges from $50 to $200, depending on the itinerary and stateroom category.
For itineraries, Holland America's Alaska cruises and cruisetours are perfect for solo travelers, offering many opportunities to connect with fellow cruisers. Another favorite for singles is the line's fall voyages sailing from Boston to Québec City or Montreal.

Singles can also participate in onboard activities like trivia contests, drink seminars, escape rooms, dance classes and pool parties.
If you need more thrills to stay busy and to meet people, Royal Caribbean's ships feature world-class shows and entertainment alongside adrenaline-pumping rides and attractions. Famed Seattle Restaurateur Renee Erickson Is Putting Three New Restaurants in Pioneer Square
The chef behind the Walrus and the Carpenter is going big in 2025

Share All sharing options for: Famed Seattle Restaurateur Renee Erickson Is Putting Three New Restaurants in Pioneer Square
One of Seattle’s most celebrated and prolific restaurateurs plans to make a big splash in Pioneer Square: Renee Erickson’s Sea Creatures group, which you may know from such restaurants as the Whale Wins and Bateau , plans to launch not one, not two, but three new restaurants at 419 Occidental Avenue, part of the Railspur development.
Erickson, a James Beard Award–winning chef, has owned restaurants since 1998, when she bought the now-shuttered Boat Street Cafe, but she’s really been on a tear since she opened her Ballard oyster bar the Walrus and the Carpenter in 2008 — her Sea Creatures group now has 10 restaurants, including the doughnut mini-chain General Porpoise. (Sea Creatures also operates Westward, which it acquired in 2018.) Along the way Sea Creatures has established itself as one of Seattle’s most recognizable dining brands — an Erickson restaurant combines a focus on seafood, millennial-friendly soft minimalist design, seasonal menus, and an overall sense that you’re hanging out in the lobby of your coolest friend’s apartment building.
Sea Creatures restaurants adorn several of Seattle’s cutting-edge real estate developments. Roman-inspired Willmott’s Ghost and the cocktail bar Deep Dive are inside the Amazon Spheres (as is a General Porpoise location you need an Amazon lanyard to access). Erickson’s latest restaurant, the wine bar Lioness , is inside the Shared Roof mixed-use building on Phinney Ridge, a project of developer Chad Dale — who is also a co-owner of Sea Creatures.
Railspur fits the bill of that new-wave Seattle development — it’s a “transformative micro district” of three buildings and a series of alleys that already houses upscale taqueria Tacolisto and the Hotel Westland, which is set to open next year. Railspur is a major component of the post-lockdown revitalization of Pioneer Square that has unfolded as events return to the stadiums and cruise ships return to the nearby waterfront.
So what are these restaurants going to be? The first is Lowlander Brewery, which the press release describes as one of the country’s first “tank bars,” a place where customers can watch the beer being brewed, then get beer served “directly from specialized tanks.” It marks Sea Creatures’ first venture into the beer world. Lowlander will have 100 seats inside, a bunch of outdoor seating, and TVs — it’s going to cultivate a sports bar atmosphere, partly as an homage to FX McRory’s, a former occupant of the building.
The second restaurant is Un Po Tipsy Pizzeria, a largely by-the-slice wood-fired operation that will cater to the takeout crowd. The third is an as-yet-unnamed “higher-end, European-inspired restaurant” with 40 seats plus a cocktail bar that presumably will be in line with Erickson’s other restaurants.
There’s no opening date for any of the restaurants, which will all be located at 419 Occidental Avenue, but it should be sometime early next year.
