A guide to Mudumalai National Park, where Oscar-winner The Elephant Whisperers was filmed

By Anurag Mallick and Priya Ganapathy

The elephant and mahout are going back home during sunset in the rice field at Elephant Villange in Surin province Thailand.

Set in the century-old Theppakadu Elephant Camp at Mudumalai Tiger Reserve,  The Elephant Whisperers, won the Best Documentary Short Film at the 95 th Oscar Awards. The 40-minute film by Kartiki Gonsalves follows the story of Bomman, a Kattunayakan tribe priest and his wife, Bellie, who foster orphaned elephant calves. The two were assigned by the Forest Department to raise two baby elephants in South India—Raghu, a weak calf separated from his herd after his mother was electrocuted by a fence, and Baby Ammu, another orphan. After watching the film on Netflix and the recent Oscar win, travellers from are making a beeline for Mudumalai. If the park and its elephants have warmed your heart too, here’s everything you need know to plan a visit.

What’s special about Mudumalai National Park?

Located at the foothills of the Nilgiris by the banks of the Moyar River, Theppakadu Elephant Camp was established in 1917 by the British for timber logging. In 1940, the wild tracts of Nilgiris’ northeastern slopes were constituted as Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary, which was South India’s first wildlife sanctuary. During the Second World War, the area served as a jungle warfare training camp for soldiers to prepare for the dense forests of Burma. The elephant camp became a place to rehabilitate orphaned, injured and displaced pachyderms. More elephants have been born in captivity at Theppakadu than anywhere else in the world.

This gently undulating hilly terrain of the Western Ghats lies on Tamil Nadu’s interstate boundaries with Karnataka and Kerala. Flanked by Bandipur Tiger Reserve, Nagarahole National Park and Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, it falls under the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and holds the highest population of Asian elephants in the world. The Moyar River, the park’s primary water source flows through the sanctuary, and is a natural boundary separating Mudumalai from adjoining Bandipur. The park forms part of an important corridor for migratory elephants who lumber about in large herds through Nagarahole, Bandipur and Mudumalai.

Their shrinking habitat and fractured migratory corridor result in frequent man-elephant conflicts. A Supreme Court order led to the closure of several resorts and wildlife lodges established in the buffer zone some years ago, though a few old-timers like Jungle Hut and Bamboo Banks survive. Despite the dent to Mudumalai’s wildlife appeal by the rash of smaller unregulated lodges and lack of online or advance booking of wildlife safaris, the elephant camp remains the star attraction.

The camp currently houses 28 elephants, including former rogues, crop raiders and wild tuskers captured and rescued by the Forest Department. The mahouts and caretakers mostly belong to the Kattunayakan tribe, the forest’s original dwellers. They spend a lot of time taming and tending to these elephants, bathing and feeding them the local staple  ragi (finger millet) balls, dried coconut and jaggery. While elephant rides have not been initiated since the pandemic, visitors can avail tickets (Rs25/head) to watch the elephant feeding which takes place between 8.30am-9am and 5.30pm-6pm.

Meet the famous elephants of Mudumalai National Park

Thanks to the docu feature, Krishna, Raghu and Baby Ammu have gained a lot of fame recently, though Theppekadu’s most infamous resident was Loki, a notorious crop-raiding elephant named after the Norse god of mischief. Loki was captured in the forests of Padanthurai in 1997 and brought to the camp in September 1999. Loki was renamed Murthy after well-known veterinarian Dr Vaidyanathan Krishnamurthy.

Crop raiders have a different feeding pattern. They eat 100-150 kg of fodder through the night in one go. Loki’s bravado grew with his appetite. He attacked farmers protecting their crops and was responsible for 22 registered deaths across two states. Eventually, at the ripe age of 35, he was taken captive by the Forest Department. It took four massive tuskers, tranquilisers and tons of chains to capture him and a year to break him in. Normally, a man-killer is terminated but for the first time in the history of Indian wildlife, a wild elephant was made to change his ways. Often, they use a  kumki or trained elephant to trap wild ones. The legend of Loki took an ironic twist when he retired from  kumki services last year quite honourably as ‘Makhana Murthy’!

Mudumalai is a mine of stories, attracting several researchers, scientists and filmmakers. Elephant woman Katherine ‘Katy’ Payne who spent nearly 15 years researching African elephants, also spent some time at Theppakadu. Hailed as the first person to prove that elephants communicate through sub-sonic sound (14 Hz), her path-breaking discovery busted the old myth that elephants use telepathy. She recorded over 1,000 different calls and identified the meaning of 400 calls.

Beyond elephants, what to spot at Mudumalai National Park?

Elephants are the dominant mammals here and herds can be seen along the National Highway cutting through the park. Another unmissable creature is the Malabar giant squirrel, often spotted on the branches of deciduous trees, which also harbour the flying squirrel. Mudumalai's mammals include tiger, leopard and dhole—an Asiatic wild dog, striped hyena, golden jackal and sloth bear. Herbivores include gaur, sambar, spotted deer, Indian muntjac, mouse deer and wild boar.

There are two routes to reach mudumalai. If you choose masinagudi route you should be good in driving.on the way to mudumalai itself we able to see the wild animals like monkey, deer, peacock etc. After reaching mudumalai,we have to go for safari ride through government vehicle inside the forest. Its entirely different watching the animals in Zoo and in forest.During our ride we sighted animals like Bison, wild elephant, nilgiri thar, deer. But we are little bit unlucky,we are not able to see any tiger...

Besides all the endangered species that you get to see here, lofty majestic elephants, Langurs existing freely in the wilderness will leave you bewitched. Traveller Tips

  • The canopy of the magnificent viridescent trees conceal the Sun well before it even sets, and makes it quite dark. Thus, it is advisable to reach here during noon itself.
  • It gets quite cold here as the evening sets, so warm clothes are necessarily to be packed when heading here.
  • These are tropical wet forests, and unexpected rainfalls are common, hence accordingly the apparels like umbrella, raincoats gumboots, should be kept.
  • While inside the reserve, maintain utter silence and stay alert . This is the only way your chances of spotting tigers, leopards or for that matter any animal candidly in its true habitat increases immensely.
  • Abide by all the rules and regulations that the reserve keepers or travel guides intimate you with. They are for your own safety and peaceful experience.
  • Bull elephant’s encounters are common, so if you’re trekking around the masinagudi region, treak cautiously.
  • Chances of spotting wildcats are maximum at the peak of dawn, so choose the 6:30 am safari if you’re here for that.

Things to Do

  • Book a jeep safari and ride into the depths of the forest waiting patiently for the sights of wildlife involved with their natural self, up close and personal.
  • Theppakadu Elephant Camp provides visitors with the opportunity of observing the elephants in their natural habitat. Bathing them, feeding them, observing their routines, etc. are also options.
  • After June, the elephant camps begin which are camps that are responsible for relaxation and rejuvenation purposes of all elephants of the state.

Theppakadu Elephant Camp Ooty Timings

One of the popular sightseeing places in Ooty to explore on your Ooty tour is the Theppakadu Elephant Camp. Situated on the banks of the river Moyar and a short stroll away from Mudumalai National Park , the Theppakadu Elephant Camp is the oldest elephant camp in Asia that invites tourists to spend a good amount of time with the largest land animal on earth in a controlled environment.

Established in the year 1972, the Theppakadu Elephant Camp offers shelter to 23 elephants that are trained, bathed, and fed within the premises. Here you can take the elephant rides in the morning and evening at a small fee along with enjoying the documentary that is screened in the English language to provide enough information about the elephants.
