I’m From Mangalore And Here’s Why I Feel It’s One Of The Most Underrated Beach Destinations In India

I’m From Mangalore And Here’s Why I Feel It’s One Of The Most Underrated Beach Destinations In India

Skyscrapers, gorgeous malls, swanky restaurants attracted me to a travel destination as a child. I really looked forward to visiting my maternal city of Bangalore, as opposed to my paternal one, Mangalore. You might think they sound the same, so potato, poh-tato. But that’s not the case. While Bangalore is studded with umpteen beautiful malls, and a plethora of restaurants, Mangalore on the other side has a humble charm to it. With vast secluded beaches that extend as far as one’s sight to simpler restaurants that serve fresh seafood, there’s an old-world, serene allure to it. But the city mouse in me never seemed to appreciate the countryside of Mangalore. Fast forward 20 years later, when I just wanted a break from the fast-paced city life of Bangalore, I hopped on a bus and went to Mangalore. Suddenly the beaches that seemed so empty, felt just perfect. The dearth of skyscrapers and swanky malls felt like a blessing. And the simple seafood dishes tasted authentic and extraordinary. That’s when I realised that my trips to Goa, Chennai, Mumbai and other beach destinations stood no ground against Mangalore. I’m Sanjana Shenoy, a Senior Content Writer at Curly Tales, and let me give you 5 reasons why Mangalore is one of the most underrated beach destinations in India.

1. Plenty Of Gorgeous, Clean & Secluded Beaches

One of my earliest memories of my childhood was spending time with my family at the Surathkal beach near my grandmother’s house. Building sandcastles, collecting shells, splashing in the waves and just looking out for treasures in the vast clear beach were some of my favourite memories. It’s undoubtedly is, one of the cleanest and most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. And I went to Goa, Mumbai, Chennai, Sri Lanka and even the Middle East! So yes, I am drawing comparisons. It has always been untouched by tourism, secluded, pure and offered one of the most gorgeous sunsets you’d ever see. I loved collecting shells and keeping it in a little box of mine, storing my treasures for posterity.

2. Budget-Friendly Place Untouched By Tourism

One of the ultimate highlights of Mangalore that I’ve personally experienced is that this beach destination is untouched by tourism. It’s a pocket-friendly place, where you can have a lovely fish thali for under  ₹ 80. And you can stay at a cosy hotel for prices only starting from under   ₹ 900.  You won’t find yourself surrounded by hoards of tourists swarming like bees on the beaches.  And you certainly won’t burn a hole in your pocket purchasing overpriced souvenirs and trinkets. Well, I’m from Bangalore, and trust me, I know a pocket-friendly destination, when I see one. So one of the reasons that make Mangalore an underrated destination for me, is definitely the fact that it’s a budget-friendly beach destination tucked away from tourism.

3. Delicious Seafood Dishes & Ice Creams To Fulfill Desires Of Every Foodie

I’m a hardcore foodie. So, when it comes to beach destinations, the first thing that comes to my mind is mouth-watering seafood. Mangalore has plenty of amazing restaurants that serve you delicious seafood dishes at pocket-friendly prices. During my visits to Mangalore, I’d happily plan my entire itinerary around my lunch and dinner plans. Chicken Ghee Roast with Neer Dosa, Kane Rava Fry, Pomfret Gassi with steamed rice are some of my all-time favourites at Maharaja Hotel. Mangalore’s Machli restaurant is a like a bustling charming little restaurant where I devoured a wholesome fish thali for just   ₹80. Then of course if you haven’t had Shetty Lunch Home’s iconic invention of Chicken Ghee Roast, your trip to Mangalore would be incomplete. I can still taste the lingering flavour of the gheelicious dish even now. Yum!

my travel experience to mangalore

The cherry on the cake to your food adventures in Mangalore has got to be a quick visit to Ideal Pabbas. This is an iconic ice cream parlour that serves lip-smacking sundaes. Some of my best memories in Mangalore are all made here sitting with my family and savouring Tiramisu, and Gadbad in Pabbas. From Royal Falooda, Chocolate Choconut to Dry Fruit Cocktail, I never really ran out of ice cream flavours and sundaes to try out here. And neither will you. So if you have a sweet tooth, no tusk like mine, then Pabbas is your abode.

4. Plethora Of  Breathtaking Temples & Churches For A Spiritual Getaway

During my visits to Mangalore as a child, I remember my mother tugging me to ancient temples here. And I’d make a sullen face and just follow through. Those temple visits didn’t make much sense. I probably wanted to chill at the beach or enjoy a refreshing sundae at Pabbas. But years later, when I visited those temples again, I was enamoured by its intricate architecture, elaborate pujas, divine deity and the serenity here.

my travel experience to mangalore

Mangalore has breathtaking temples like Mahathobhara Shree Mangaladevi Temple, Sri Venkataramana Devasthana and Shree Gokarnanatha Kshetra to name a few.  It even boasts of beautiful churches like the 16th century Milagres Church and St. Aloysius Chapel, perfect for a spiritual getaway. And these spiritual sites are truly a blessing in disguise when you wish to just take a pause in your life. I wanted to take things slow, just take a pause from the fast-paced life in Bangalore. And I found my pause, my breath of fresh air in Mangalore, And I’m sure you will too.

5. Fun Sightseeing Spots Including India’s First 3D Planetarium For A Great Day Spend

The Bangalorean in me is used to gorgeous malls, expansive gardens and beautiful bars. So the last time I went to Mangalore I thought I covered it all. What more is there to see in a small beach town right? Well, I was so wrong. I might have covered all the beaches and iconic seafood joints in Mangalore during my childhood. But there were still amazing sightseeing spots that I had no clue about. This includes India’s first 3D planetarium here in Mangalore! My cousin, Ramya planned a day trip around Mangalore with me. We went to the Swami Vivekananda Planetarium, The Tannirubavi  Tree Park and finally to the Pilikula Biological Park. When it comes to the Swami Vivekananda Planetarium, let me tell you it’s truly a global experience.

Mangalore tourism.

Located between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats, the port city of Mangalore or Mangaluru is known for its swaying coconut palms, beautiful beaches and temple architecture. It is also an important industrial, commercial, educational and healthcare hub of the state of Karnataka.

Despite the growing commercialisation, it provides a quick and soothing getaway from the city bustle and yet preserves just the right amount of the urban glitter. It offers a pleasant ambience and is close to perfect with its shopping attractions with large malls with all the global brands and vibrant seafood dishes. Tasting the Mangalorean cuisine is a must-try once in the city.  Major tourist attractions in Mangalore are the beautiful beaches and the temples, churches and mosques. The Kudroli Temple, Mangaladevi temple, Someshwara beach, Panambur beach , Tannirbavi Beach and Pilikula Nisargadhama are some of the places one might want to visit. Most dismiss Mangalore (officially Mangaluru) as a stopover between Goa and Kerala , or a hub to access Coorg and Hassan. However, this bustling multicultural town is packed with history and many visit for its famed coastal cuisine. Named after the ancient temple of Mangaladevi at Bolar, 3km from the centre, Mangalore was one of south India 's most famous ports frequented by Arab traders. It was already well known overseas in the sixth century as a major source of pepper; the fourteenth-century Muslim writer Ibn Battuta noted its trade in pepper and ginger and the presence of Persian and Yemenese merchants.

Tailor-made trips for   India

In the mid-1400s, the Persian ambassador Abdu’r-Razzaq saw Mangalore as a lucrative “frontier town” of the Vijayanagar Empire, which was why it was captured by the Portuguese in 1529, and later Tipu Sultan and the British.

Nowadays, the modern port, 10 km north of the city proper, is principally known for the processing and export of coffee and cocoa (mostly from Kodagu), and cashew nuts (from Kerala). It is also a centre for the production of beedis (local cigarettes).

Mangaluru’s strong Christian influence can be traced back to the arrival of St Thomas further south. Some 1400 years later, in 1526, the Portuguese founded one of the earliest churches on the coast, although today’s Rosario Cathedral, with a dome based on St Peter’s in Rome, dates only from 1910.

Closer to the centre, on Lighthouse Hill Road, fine restored fresco, tempera and oil murals by the Italian Antonio Moscheni adorn the Romanesque-style St Aloysius College Chapel, built in 1882.

From sandy beaches to temples and churches, here are the best things to do in Mangalore.

#1 Seek out Manjunatha temple in Mangalore

Atop the Kadri Hill, 3 km north of the centre, Mangaluru’s tenth-century Manjunatha temple is believed to be the oldest Shiva temple in the city and an important centre of the tantric Nathapanthi cult, a divergent form of Hinduism and similar to cults in Nepal.

Enshrined in the sanctuary are a number of superb bronzes, including a 1.5m-high seated Matsyendranatha, made in 958 AD. To see it up close, visit at darshan times (6am–1pm & 4–8pm), although the bronzes can be glimpsed through the wooden slats on the side of the sanctuary.

If possible, time your visit to coincide with mahapuja (8am, noon & 8pm) when the priests give a fire blessing to the accompaniment of raucous music.

Opposite the east entrance, steps lead via a reddish-coloured path to a curious group of minor shrines. Beyond this complex stands the Shri Yogishwar Math, a hermitage set round two courtyards.

#2 Head to the beaches at Ullal

To escape the city for a few hours, head to the suburb of Ullal , where a long sandy beach stretches for kilometres, backed by wispy casuarina trees.

It’s a popular place for a stroll, particularly in the evening when Mangaloreans come out to watch the sunset, but a strong undertow makes swimming difficult, and at times unsafe.

You might be better off using the pool at the Summer Sands Beach Resort immediately behind the beach.

#3 Visit the tomb of a saint said to have floated across the sea on a handkerchief

Towards the centre of Ullal, and around 700m from the main bus stand, is the dargah of Seyyid Mohammad Shareeful Madani, a sixteenth-century saint who is said to have come from Medina in Arabia, floating across the sea on a handkerchief.

The extraordinary nineteenth-century building with garish onion domes houses the saint’s tomb, which is one of the most important Sufi shrines in southern India. Visitors are advised to follow custom and cover their heads and limbs and wash their feet before entering.

#4 Visit one of south India’s holiest Vaishnavite centres at Udupi

Udupi (also spelt Udipi), on the west coast, 60km north of Mangaluru, is one of south India’s holiest Vaishnavite centres.

The Hindu saint Madhva (1238–1317) was born here, and the Krishna temple and mathas (monasteries) he founded are visited by hundreds of thousands of pilgrims each year.

The largest numbers congregate during the late winter, when the town hosts a series of spectacular car festivals and gigantic, bulbous-domed chariots are hauled through the streets around the temple.

Even if your visit doesn’t coincide with a festival, Udupi is a good place to break the journey along the Karavali coast. Thronging with pujaris and pilgrims, its small sacred enclave is wonderfully atmospheric.

#5 Watch some Kambla (buffalo) racing

If you’re anywhere between Mangaluru and Bhatkal from October to April and come across a crowd gathering around a waterlogged paddy field, chances are they’re there to watch the spectacular rural sport of Kambla, or buffalo racing.

It’s a centuries-old tradition unique to Dakshina Kannada, the southernmost district of coastal Karnataka .

Two contestants, usually local rice farmers, take part in the race, riding on a wooden ploughboard tethered to a pair of buffaloes.

The object is to reach the opposite end of the field first, but points are also awarded for style, and riders gain extra marks – and roars of approval from the crowd – if the muddy spray kicked up from the plough-board splashes the special white banners, or thorana, strung across the course at a height of 6–8m.

Hampankatta

This bustling commercial area has a range of hotels, guesthouses, and budget accommodations.

Another central area, Balmatta has budget hotels and serviced apartments.

Located slightly away from the city centre, Kankanady is a peaceful residential area. It offers a mix of budget and mid-range hotels.

For a quieter and greener setting, head to Kadri, home to the beautiful Kadri Park. The area has a handful of guesthouses that provide a tranquil stay.

Travelling around Mangalore is relatively easy, thanks to its well-connected transportation infrastructure. From the efficient public bus system, auto-rickshaws, and taxis readily available, here’s how to do it.

The city has a well-developed public bus system operated by the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC).

Local buses are an affordable and convenient way to travel within Mangalore, with routes covering major areas and landmarks.

By auto-rickshaw

These three-wheelers are readily available throughout the city and most commonly used for short-distance travel in Mangalore. Fares are typically metered.

Generally more expensive than auto-rickshaws, the city has both app-based ride-hailing cabs and traditional taxi services.

The best time to visit Mangalore is during the winter months, from October to February. During this time, the weather is pleasant with milder temperatures and lower humidity. It is a great time to explore the city's attractions, enjoy outdoor activities, and relax on the beaches.

Mangalore experiences a tropical monsoon climate, with heavy rainfall from June to September. While the monsoon season brings lush greenery to the region, it can also result in frequent rain showers and high humidity, which may limit outdoor activities.

The summer months, from March to May, can be quite hot and humid, with temperatures often exceeding 30°C (86°F). If you don't mind the heat, you can still visit during this time and enjoy indoor attractions or spend time at the beaches.

A stay of 2 to 3 days is generally sufficient to explore the main attractions of Mangalore and get a taste of the city's culture and cuisine.

This gives you time to visit popular landmarks such as Kadri Manjunath Temple, Mangaladevi Temple, St. Aloysius Chapel, and the Sultan Battery. Stay for 3 days and you’ll also have some time for the beaches at Panambur or Tannirbhavi.

If you wish to explore nearby destinations like Udupi or the famous pilgrimage site of Dharmasthala, you may consider extending your stay by a day or two.

Most arrive in Mangalore by train from all across India, though there are domestic and international flights landing at its airport daily too.

Bajpe airport, 22 km north of the city has regular flights to Bengaluru and Mumbai besides services to Goa , Hyderabad and Kochi . There are also daily connections with the Gulf States.

The railway station, to the south of the city centre on Station Rd, sees daily services from cities all over India. Though rail services to Goa and Mumbai operate from Mangaluru, note that Konkan Railway through trains do not stop at the city terminus.

A better choice of train connections north and south is at Kankanadi, around 10 km north, or Kasaragod, an easy bus ride across the Kerala border.

Mangaluru’s busy KSRTC Bus Stand (known locally as the “Lal Bagh” Bus Stand) is nearly 3 km north of the town centre, in Hampankatta, from where you can catch city buses to most local destinations.

By private bus

Private buses use the much more central stand near the Town Hall. There are plenty of state buses heading north to Udupi and south along the coast into northern Kerala, though it is easier to pick up the more numerous private services to those places.

Mesmerizing Western Ghats from Vistadome Coach

By rahuldev rajguru, last updated: 19 jul 2023.

It has been 16 years and I have hardly missed a visit to Western Ghats during each rainy season. Am I satisfied, considering my love for the Western Ghats? NOT quite yet. Rain and Western Ghats is a match made in heaven. You won’t be able to relate to the tranquility cocooned in the mountain ranges until you spend a few days in the middle of Western Ghats during the downpour. Rain brings with it the stunning views of evergreen shola grasslands that blend with the verdant valleys. The gentle waterfalls nestled in the folds of the hills come alive with the rain. Gushing streams, breathtaking bridges, endless dark tunnels and misty mountain peaks call out to nature lovers to come and soak in this stunning extravagance of Western Ghats.

Vistadome journey in Western Ghats

It seems Indian Railways heard me and Voila, my wish came true. Here comes the Vistadome coach with ultra-wide windowpanes and glass rooftop. The coach is equipped with wide seats, pushback chairs, long foot space, foldable snack table AND most importantly 360-degree rotatable seats. They have designed a 2x2 seating arrangement with only 11 rows (44 seats) per coach to accommodate all the luxury a passenger can avail. Each coach is monitored through CCTV cameras and is equipped with a fire safety system. The mini pantry has an OTG, microwave and a refrigerator for passengers to use. Resplendent upholstery, artificial grass carpets, motion sensor enabled sliding doors and elegant lightings provide a luxurious feel to the coach. It felt like I'm flying first class on one of the most luxurious airlines in the world. The Vistadome coach ticket price is just Rs. 1,395 ($20) for a 10-hour one-way trip. A steal, don't you think?

It was my dream to travel this train route on Western Ghats during the daytime. I could not wait to board the Vistadome chair car the moment I discovered this new introduction along this Green Route, as it is popularly known. With some persuasion, I managed to convince my wife to join me over the weekend and here we go. We hit the first roadblock while booking the Vistadome train , the tickets were waitlisted. We had 4 days to go, so it was worth taking the risk, which eventually paid off, our tickets got confirmed a day in advance.

"First Class" experience of traveling in Vistadome Coach, the innovation of Indian Railways

We took the Vistadome coach on our way back from Mangalore to Bangalore the next day as well. We stayed overnight at Hotel Treebo Trend The Horizon in Mangalore . Mangalore Central Railway Station is not far from the hotel. There are a number of quaint restaurants serving authentic Mangalorean cuisine near this hotel.

We boarded the Vistadome train between Bangalore and Mangalore at 7 am from Yesvantpur Railway Station. It went through the green corridor surrounded by lush-green paddy fields, Areca-nut plantations and tiny villages until Sakleshpur, about a 4-hour journey. We boarded with less than half occupancy with more passengers boarding from stations on the way and both the coaches were full by the time we reached Sakleshpur, the real Vistadome experience begins now .

Rahuldev and wife enjoy their vistadome experience against the background of the Western Ghats.

Sakleshpur is situated at an elevation of 906 meters (3,000 feet) from where the Western Ghat section begins and ends at Subramanya Road at an elevation of 120 meters (400 feet). The downhill journey in the middle of the rainforest and shola grasslands of Western Ghats covers a distance of 55.26 kilometers (34 miles) with a rolling gradient of 1 in 50. This entire section passes through 109 curves & bridges and 57 tunnels. The longest tunnel measures 0.75 kilometers. Incredible stats, right? There are countless waterfalls (100+), few river crossings and cloud-covered valleys on this 3-hour breathtaking journey through the dense forest of Western Ghats.

Indian Railways scenic route through Western Ghats offers picture postcard view through wide windowpanes

Each coach has a small lounge in the far end, which can accommodate about 8-10 people. The lounge has a large viewing window offering you a 180-degree panoramic view. The coaches are placed at the fag end of the train for the Bangalore-Mangalore route. Lounge of the last Vistadome coach (eventually the last coach of the train) is the place I spent most of my time during this 3-hour journey through the ghats. This view is not available during the return journey to Bangalore as the train has to go uphill and requires two engines to pull the load, one in the front and one at the rear, blocking this breathtaking view from the lounge. So in essence, the Vistadome coach from Bangalore to Mangalore offers a more complete view of the Western Ghats as compared to the return journey. Vistadome coaches are now available on train routes between Bangalore to Udupi as well as all the way to Karwar.

One of the 57 tunnels with green mountains and foggy weather

Breathtaking view of misty Western Ghats as seen from the Vistadome lounge

What can I say about the view of this spectacular UNESCO World Heritage Site ? You have to see it to believe it! Older than the Himalaya Mountains, the Western Ghats is a biodiversity hotspot and makes for one of the most picturesque views. As we meander through this rich rainforest, awakened by the monsoon, it displays its splendor in a million hues of green. The montane forest is decorated with numerous waterfalls, big and small, that add to the beauty and excitement of the monsoon train journey. The gushing water below the bridges is truly a sight to behold. The Vistadome coach literally brings the Western Ghats into the bogie. It is among the hidden places in South India to visit during monsoon .

This entire route is an engineering masterpiece. This section of the ghat receives about 6,000 mm of rain each year. This causes frequent landslides, sometimes blocking or uprooting the rail tracks. Frequent monitoring of the tracks poses an uphill challenge for the authorities. The other challenges Railways face are moving specialized and skilled manpower with almost non-existent road connectivity. It was a herculean task even to bring heavy machinery including earthmovers and DG sets through rocky topography and lengthy tunnels.

A rail bridge was erected across the picturesque Western Ghats river.

One of the longest rail bridges built in this corridor over the river flowing through the scenic Western Ghats

Scenic train journey in Western Ghats

Amid all the odds stacked against them, Indian Railways commissioned meter-gauge railway tracks on this route in 1979. Trains, at lesser frequency, operated until 1996 when the authorities decided to convert them to broad-gauge to increase the train frequency and also allow freight trains. All the trains were discontinued until 2007 for the track conversion work to be completed in this tough terrain amid natural challenges. The trains restarted plying between Bangalore and Mangalore from 2007 onwards but it hit another bottleneck in adding more trains along the route due to some of the safety protocols due to the ruling gradient of 1 in 50 in the g hat section. Indian Railways implemented cutting-edge Multi-Section Digital Axle Counter (MSDAC) technology for safe and seamless operations in ghat sections in 2020. This opened the door for plying a large number of trains and eventually introduction of Vistadome coaches in July 2021. A commendable job done by the Indian Railways.

Under hazy weather, a train makes a large bend in the difficult terrain of the Western Ghats.

Building and maintaining safety standards of a railway line passing through tough terrain and rainforest itself is an engineering marvel of Indian Railways

Maintaining and providing a safe passage to trains through "Green Corridor" is a continuous process and has its own challenges during the rainy season. It also requires huge manpower on the mountains for frequent physical inspection of the tracks, bridges and tunnels. A staff of more than 100 people have dedicated themselves to ensure the safety of passengers. They have set up an inspection post every 5 kilometers where a few of the staff members are stationed to continuously monitor and report the status of rail tracks to the authorities. I salute all those work heroes due to whom nature lovers like me can enjoy this scenic route when it blossoms the best, when it rains.

Hacks to have the best Vistadome experience

  • While choosing your seat, you would want to sit on the right side of the moving train while traveling from Bangalore to Mangalore, Udupi or Karwar because that is where the view is. If traveling from Mangalore to Bangalore then your preferred seat will be on the left side of the moving train.
  • A window seat is definitely a better bet to get maximum view of the ghat section.
  • The best view is from the lounge of the coach, which is at the last coach of the train. So a seat in the last coach is the perfect spot for the best experience.
  • The lounge view is available only on the Vistadome train route from Bangalore to Mangalore or Bangalore to Udupi and Karwar. On the Mangalore to Bangalore return journey the engine blocks the lounge view, so only the side window view is available.
  • The Vistadome coaches are the last two coaches situated at the fag end of the train while going from Bangalore-Mangalore. The last coach has the lounge view that offers a panoramic view, which is the best view in the house. So, make sure you find a spot there in Sakleshpur before the train leaves that station, as it gets crowded after that.
  • Please note that Mangalore has two train stations, Mangalore Central and Mangalore Junction. Mangalore Central is where the train with Vistadome coah arrive and depart.

How to reach Yeshwantpur Railway Station

There is a Metro station opposite Yeshwantpur railway station. Many parts of the city, including south Bangalore, are connected to Yeshwantpur by the green line metro. Those who live near the purple line metro must change at Majestic Kempe Gowda metro station. As Yeshwantpur is at the other end of Bangalore, the metro is the preferred way to avoid Bangalore traffic and reduce commute times.

There are frequent buses from Bangalore's central area to Yeshwantpur railway station run by BMTC . Alternatively, you can use ride-sharing apps like Uber to hail an auto or taxi.
