Situated at an altitude of 700 m, Nasik has been called the Wine Capital of India and is situated on the banks of River Godavari. Are you on a trip to cover all the Jyotirlinga in India? Are you visiting Trimbakeshwar temple and want to know how to go about it? I have the perfect Trimbakeshwar temple visit guide from my personal experience.

Popular as one of the 12 Jyotirlinga temples in India, Trimbakeshwar temple has its ardent devotees which pay a visit every few years. The temple is visited by devotees who want to complete their ‘Jyotirlinga yatra’, meaning paying a visit to all 12 temples which are spread across India. I happened to pay my respects to Lord Mahadev during my Nashik trip.

What are Jyotirlinga and its significance?

A Jyotirlinga refers to a divine representation of Lord Shiva. It is said that originally there were 64 jyotirlingas, but now only 12 of these are considered most auspicious and holy. Each of the 12 Jyotirlinga is believed to be a different manifestation of Shiva and is considered to be the holiest of all shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva.

According to the beliefs of Hindu mythology, it is believed that whosoever visits all of these 12 holy Jyotirlingas, will be released from the cycle of life and death. Maharashtra has the highest number of Jyotirlinga and can be easily covered. Maharashtra Jyotirlinga tour is possible to complete within 5 days.

Trimbakeshwar Temple location

Trimbakeshwar Temple is located around 30 km from the city of Nashik, Maharashtra on the banks of River Godavari and on the foothills of Brahmagiri Mountains. Popularly known as Trimbak, Trimbakeshwar temple visit is looked forward to by a lot of people from Pune and Mumbai and rest of India.

About Trimbakeshwar Temple Visit

Built in the 17th Century by Sri Nana Saheb Peshwa, Trimbakeshwar Temple is built of black stone. The architecture features Nagara style which has a spacious courtyard, a square structure which features an internal sanctum which has presiding deity – Lord Shiva.

The entire structure is ornamented with intricate sculpture in stonework which features flowers, figures of gods, humans and animals. The sanctum is crowned with a tower, embellished with a giant Amalaka and a golden kalash. The Shiva linga is present in the floor depression of the sanctum. Water constantly oozes out from the top of the Shiva linga. The Shiva Linga is adorned with a crown studded with precious stones (emeralds and diamonds), which is said to be from the age of Pandavas.

The crown is displayed every Monday between 4 pm – 5 pm.

Note: Women are not allowed to enter the sanctum sanctorum. Only men can enter along with a priest of the temple for performing a ritual called Rudra Abhishek .

Trimbakeshwar Temple Visit Guide: My experience

I had had a long previous day so in spite of a lot of people telling me to go early, I did not. I checked out of my staycation at Holiday Inn Express at 10 am and reached Trimbakeshwar around 11 am. The February sun was high but still pleasant. From the car parking me and my friend walked towards the gate of the temple.

We came across gate 2 and were clueless about what to expect. There were a lot of boards about VIP darshan, shoe keeping fees and a lot of flower and puja material vendors dotting the gate. There were security guards standing there and I inquired for guidance. They informed me that there are 2 ways to pay respects to the lord – Free darshan or VIP darshan. Free darshan has a huge queue and would easily take 4-5 hours to reach the sanctum (of course, it was a Sunday!) and VIP darshan would take around 1-1.5 hours if we decided to give a small donation (Rs. 200).

Free darshan at Trimbakeshwar Temple is from gate no. 1 and VIP darshan after buying tickets is from gate 2. After a quick discussion, we decided to go for the VIP darshan because we did not want to lose half a day standing in the sun.

After paying donation and receiving a receipt for it, we kept our shoes in the dedicated shoe stand (paid service) and were directed to enter the temple premises. We reached a looped metal structure where the VIP darshan line had to queue up. It had a sunshade, ceiling fans and people were waiting patiently.

We moved from one loop to the next every few minutes. We could finally see the Trimbakeshwar Temple structure from a distance in the last loop. The sun was directly over our heads and all I did was to stare at the beautiful black structure in front of me.

We were finally allowed to go inside the sanctum. A dedicated queue was maintained here and security priests directed where to stand, when to pray and when to move forward. One of them shouted ‘No mobile phone inside’. A quick glance at the Shiva Linga, I folded my hands and paid my respects. And within seconds I was out of the sanctum on the other side.

As I came out, I photographed the beautiful structure and ended my visit to this beautiful temple. I also paid a quick visit to Kushavarta, a sacred pond in the temple premises which is the source of the Godavari River, the longest river in peninsular India.

Festivals and Celebrations at the Temple

While Kumbh Mela is the most devoted festival which is attended by people all over India, there are many other festivals which take place and are of importance. Kumbh Mela is held once every 12 years, which is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world. Millions of pilgrims from far wide gather here to take a dip in the River Godavari.

Other festivals celebrated here include Mahashivaratri, Tripuri Purnima and Rath Poornima.

Are mobile phones/photography allowed in Trimbakeshwar Temple?

Yes! Mobile phones are allowed in Trimbakeshwar Temple. But you have to keep it switched off/away while going to the sanctum. Visitors are allowed to take photographs of the temple structure. Even small purses or bags are allowed. No food items or water bottles allowed inside.

The Trimbakeshwar temple opens its gate to the devotees at 5:30 am and closes at 9 pm.

Best Time To Visit Trimbakeshwar temple

Early morning is the best time to visit the temple. Month wise the best time to visit Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga Nashik is October to March as the weather is pleasant and it is bearable to stand in the sun. but keep in mind that this is a high tourist season. If you want to beat the crowds, visit in monsoon.

How to reach Trimbakeshwar Temple

Trimbakeshwar is located near Nashik so the best way to travel from Nashik to Trimbakeshwar is by road, and the time taken to reach is about 45-60 minutes.

There is no train station in Trimbakeshwar. The nearest railway station is Nashik Railway Station, which is about 41 km away. You can reach Nashik railway station from Mumbai or any other city in India. One can hire a taxi or take a public bus to reach Trimbakeshwar.

There is no airport in Trimbakeshwar. The nearest airport is Nashik Gandhinagar Airport, which is 30 km away. From Nashik Airport, you can reach Trimbakeshwar by hiring a taxi or auto-rickshaw.

Trimbakeshwar is well connected by road. You can reach Trimbakeshwar easily by public or luxury buses or taxis.

Accommodation in Trimbakeshwar

While there are many options to stay in Trimbakeshwar from guesthouses to luxury hotels, visitors have to pass through Nashik. According to me, Nashik has more accommodation options than Trimbak. My suggestions for the same are:

Homestay: Utopia farm stay , Vihang farm stay

Sustainable travel tips:

Being an ancient pilgrimage site which sees heavy footfall every day, respect the structures by not sitting on them.
Do not enter places which are closed off, and always follow the directions given by the temple security.
Keep your mobile phone away while entering the temple sanctum.
Throw your garbage in the dustbins located at the entrance of each temple.

Nashik is an ancient holy city in Maharashtra with mythological, historical, social and cultural importance. In fact, Nashik is a city with triple identity. On one hand, it is the grape wine capital of Maharashtra which has biggest winery region in India. Many tourist visit Nashik to see these wineries and witness the wine making process. On other hand, Nashik has emerged as a place which offers unique misal pav dishes to food lovers. In fact, many people visit Nashik only to taste Misal pav. However, the biggest identity of Nashik is of a religious place with links to Ramayana. Nashik has a rich historical past, where Lord Rama, the King of Ayodhya , made Nashik his adobe during his 14 years in exile. At the same place Lord Laxman, by the wish of Lord Rama, cut the nose of “Shurpnakha” and thus this city was named as “Nashik”. Due to this religious identity, Nashik has many temples and religious places. Based on my recent visit to Nashik, here is a list of 15 Famous Religious places in Nashik, Temples in Nashik worth a visit.

1. Shri Kalaram Mandir.

We began our journey of exploring Nashik by visiting Shri Kalaram Mandir first. Shri Kalaram Mandir is situated in Panchavati area of Nashik, and is one of the major attractions of Nashik city. The temple dates back to the year 1788 and was constructed by Sardar Odhekar of Peshwa. It was said that Odhekar had a dream that the statue of Rama in black color was in the Godavari River. So Odhekar took the statue from the river and build the temple in 12 years (1780-1792) with 23 lakh rupees at that time.

The statue of Lord Rama is black in color, hence the name of the temple is Kalaram (meaning black Rama in Hindi). The sanctum also has statues of goddess Sita and god Lakshmana both in black. The temple is simple, beautiful, calm and peaceful and build completely out of black stones from mines of Ramsej Hill near Nashik. There are four entrance doors, one each facing East, West, South and North. The temple is well maintained and has security gate at the entrance. Mobile phones and camera are not allowed inside the temple.

2. Ganga Ghat.

After visiting kalaram Mandir the next place on our list was Ganga ghat. Like Kalaram Mandir, Ganga Ghat is also a place of religious interest and this place is considered highly sacred by Hindus. Ganga Ghat was built by Ahilaybai Holkar. It is surrounded by number of temples and holy Ram Kund is also located here. Ganga Ghat is mainly known for submerging the ashes of dead persons as a part of last rituals. So one can see several poojas been performed and holy prayers chanted along the ghat. It is also believed that, a dip in the stream, clears human soul of sins. The famous Kumbh ka mela takes place here in rotation of 12 years.

However, this popular religious place in Nashik is not at all well maintained. The water of the river is polluted and appears dirty. I must say we expected a lot from this place, but we were disappointed. Thought, we wanted to take a dip here, but after seeing the sight. we drop the idea. The only thing we liked here was the fountain, from where water flows from the mouth of four Oxes in all four sides.

3. Ram Kund.

This is a holy place on Godavari River. It is believed that lord Rama and Sita use to bath here during their exile hence the name Ram Kund. This holy kund, was built in 1969 by Chitrarao Khatarkar.

Ram Kund is located in the vicinity of Ganga ghat. It is also said that the Lord Rama have performed his father’s funeral rites in this Kund and hence Ram Kund is also known as Asthi Vilaya Tirtha (Bone Immersion Tank). Ashes of prominent personalities like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Dr. Rajendra Prasad were immersed in Ram Kund. Adjacent to the Ramkund, there is a Gandhi Talav (lake) having a white marbled monument, built in memory of Mahatma Gandhi. Again this is a poorly maintained place and lack cleanliness. You can find many beggars and pick pocketers here.

4. Naroshankar Mandir.

Situated on Ganga Ghat, Naroshankar Temple of Rameshwar is built in 1974 by Naroshankar Rajebahaddur Sardar of Bajirao Peshwa. It is one of the most beautiful piece of architecture of 18th century.

The famous bell, called “Naroshankar Ghanta (Bell)” is fitted in the surrounding fortification. The bell is a victory memorial over Portuguese. The ringing of this bronze bell, measuring six feet diameter, can be heard up to about 5 kilometers. When level of water in Godavari River increases, touching the Naro Shankar Ghanta, it is assumed to be very dangerous as it indicates over flooding of river water (Mahapur). Naroshankar Temple is a hidden Gem. Basically, it is a historical Shiva temple which has roots in various sacred texts. The temple is a lot crowded on Shiv Ratri and other festivals. This historic Marvel is definitely worth visiting if you are in Nashik.

5. Sundar Narayan Mandir.

This is one of the oldest temples situated near Ganga ghat. Gangadhar Yashwant Chandrachud built it in 1756. The main deity are lord Vishnu alias Narayana along with Mata Laxmi and Mata Saraswati. The main reason the temple is called “Sundar Narayan (Lord Vishnu)” is that, once Lord Vishnu became ugly by the curse given by Jalandar’s (wicked demon) wife Vrinda. Due to the curse, Lord Vishnu turned black and ugly. Upon taking bath in Godavari Lord Vishnu was relieved from the curse. Hence Lord Vishnu is called as Shri Sundar Narayan here.

There are fine design carved on the stones of the temple. The Sundar Narayan Temple is a marvelous example of architecture with the impressions of the Mughal sculpture. The temple is built in such an angle that on 21st March sun rays at sunrise fall exactly upon the Sundarnarayan idol.

6. Kapaleshwar Mahadev Mandir.

Lord Kapaleshwar Mahadev Mandir is a prominent old temple in Nashik near Ganga Ghat, built in 1769 by Jajivanram Pawar. It is a peaceful and fabulously build shrine. It is said that once Lord Shiva mistakenly killed a cow. So, to clean his sin Nandi advise him to take dip in the holy Ramkund. So Lord Shiva came to Nashik took dip in the Ramkund and meditated for some time. The temple is located at the place where Lord Shiva meditated.

We were surprised to see that in this temple there is no Nandi in front of the main deity of Lord Shiva. Normally, Nandi is placed in front of the Shivalinga but this is an exception in this temple. A local explained us that Lord Shiva regarded Nandi as a Guru (teacher) who advise him to take dip in the holy Ramkund to clean his sins and hence, there is no Nandi to guard the Kapaleshwar Temple. This is a must watch temple in Nashik.

7. Sita Ghupha (Cave)

Sita Gupha is located next to Kalaram Mandir. It is said that Sita dwelled at this place and Ravan abducted her from here. The shiv linga she worshipped is here. In Gupha there are idols of Rama, Sita and Laxman. Outside there are five Vad (Banyan) tress so the area is called Panchavati.

The ghupha is located in the heart of the city. It rest right on the main road and one can easily pass it without recognizing it. The ghupha is very small and narrow. We enjoyed kneeling down and crawling on our knees to reach there. There are steps which goes down and then goes up. The height of the ghupha is around 2.5 to 3 feet and it becomes narrow as you go inside. So, people who are obese or have big waist or have respiratory problem or asthama need to be careful while entering the ghupha. Outside the place is not well maintained and there is no place to remove your footwear. It is usually crowded on weekends or holidays and one has to wait in queue. However on weekdays, you can easily enter the ghupha without any wait. In all, it was a fabulous experience to be at the place where lady Sita lived. The ghupha is a must visit in Nashik.

8. Tapovan.

Though we could not visit Tapovan during our three days stay in Nashik. But, Tapovan is popular for its prominence in the epic Ramayan. It is believed that Rama, Lakshmana and Sita lived here during their exile. Lakshman had cut Surpanakha’s nose at this place which is how the city got its name Nasik (Nashik). It is also believed that Tapovan was the place from where Sita was abducted by Ravan. This scared place has many famous temples of Ram Purnakuti, Laxman and Kund.

9. Mukhtidham.

This famous temple is located on Nashik railway station. The entire temple is built in white marbles and is quite clean and nice place. The unique aspect of the temple is 18 chapters of Gita are written on the walls of the temple. A visit to this temple is considered a visit to Holy dhams or holy centers.

There are good accommodation facility for visitors to stay at this place at a cheaper rate. There is huge area around the temple with lot of shops. This place is visited invariably by almost every tourist.

10. Someshwar Mandir.

Someshwar is one of the famous and oldest temples in Nashik dedicated to lord Shiva and situated on the bank of river Godavari in Gangapur. Amidst lush greenery the temple is very popular religious & pleasing tourist place. There is a boating facility in Godavari river. The place is refreshing and worth going with family and friends but only in monsoon season.

11. Balaji Mandir.

One of the famous temples in Nashik situated on the bank of Godavari river in Gangapur. Nearby there is famous Dudhsagar waterfall on Godavari river. It is the replica of one at Tirupati. So those who cannot go to Tirupati can get the same feel here.

This is one of the clean, spacious and well maintained temple located at a scenic location in Nashik. There is ample place for car parking at the Mandir. Also, for misal lovers the famous sadhana misal is located near the temple. The best time to visit is evening or any time in rainy season.

12. Navashya Ganpati Mandir.

The temple was built in mid-17th century by Peshwa. It has a long history of more than 300 years. It is located on the banks on Godavari river. The temple is so holy and serene that just by visiting the temple one experience great joy and calmness on the mind. The temple is famous for being very ‘Jagrut Devasthan’ and devotees wishes are fulfilled and hence the temple got the name Navashya Ganapati. The idol & temple is very beautiful.

In the year 1774 Raghoba Peshava and his wife Anandibai built this temple. Shreemant Madhavrao Peshve and Matoshri Gopikabai were also devotees of Shri Navshya Ganapati. On 15th August 1764, Raghoba Peshava and his wife Anandibai had a son who was named Vinayak. On that day the work of building the temple started.

There is adequate parking place at the temple and the queues are well arranged without much fuss. The temple sanctum is clean and one can be at peace. Outside the temple you can see the Godavari river which is soothing to the eyes.

13. Trimbakeshwar Mandir.

Trimbakeshwar enshrines one of the twelve jyotirlingas dedicated to shiva and is one of the famous pilgrim place. It is also the origin of river Godavari. The temple is very attractive and nearly hundred feet high. It was built in the 18th century by Maratha ruler, Peshwa Nana Saheb, the temple is a perfect epitome of classic architecture.

Trimbakeshwar is situated in the town of Trimbak and is 28 km from the city of Nashik and 40 km from Nashik road. During holidays there are long queues which might take up to three hours for darshan. However, you can get special Darshan at a cost of Rs.200 per person. Within temple, they don’t even let u stand there for a few seconds even after standing in queues for hours. There is a mirror just above the main shivlinga where u can see the shivlinga while the guards push you away to exit.

The major Poojas – Narayan Nagbali, Tripindi and Kalsarpa done only at Trimbakeshwar.

14. Kushavarta.

There is tale that Gautam Rishi had stopped river here and taken bath. At the bottom of this kund there are water springs. This kund was built in 1750. It is 21 feet deep. The structure around the Kushavarta Teerth was built in the late 18th century by Raoji Abaji Parnekar of the Holkars, the Maratha rulers of Indore. There is a tradition to take bath in this kund before going to Trimbakeshwar temple. Legends say, taking a holy dip in the Kushavarta kund can wipe off sin. Kushavarta is the place from where the Godavari River takes its course.

15. Saptashringi Devi Temple.

This is one of the Shaktipeeth of Devi is around 70 kms from Nashik at Vani via Dindori Road. As you approach the temple a large rocky hill greets you. This is Saptashringi Hill. The goddess is known to have possessed 18 weapons in 18 hands and is positioned ready to fight the demons. The Goddess is also called as Mahishasur Mardini. A story in this connection is that Demon Mahishasur was creating problem for Markendaya Rishi. Markendaya had made a Holy Fire to eliminate him. The Goddess emerged with 9 pairs of arms holding different weapons from the holy Fire and eliminated the Demon. Hence Mahishasur Mardini, meaning the one who slayed Mahishasur.

The temple is very beautiful You can drive up to a certain point and then there are 500+ steps which are not too difficult for healthy people. When we visited the temple the work of rope way to reach the temple was in full swing.

The Story and Legends of Trimbakeshwar Temple

The story of Rishi Gautam: According to legend, Rishi Gautam was a sage who lived with his wife Ahalya in a hermitage near Trimbak. He was a devotee of Lord Shiva and performed rigorous penance to please him. One day, he accidentally killed a cow while collecting firewood. The cow was actually sent by Indra, the king of gods, who was jealous of Gautam’s virtue and wanted to seduce Ahalya. As a result of killing the cow, Gautam incurred a sin called Gohatya or cow-killing, which is considered to be a grave offense in Hinduism. To atone for his sin, Gautam prayed to Lord Shiva and requested him to cleanse him of his sin. Lord Shiva was pleased with Gautam’s devotion and appeared before him as a jyotirlinga. He also asked Lord Brahma to create a river from his kundalini or coiled energy to wash away Gautam’s sin. Thus, the Godavari river was born from the kund at Trimbakeshwar Temple. The story of Trivikrama: Another legend associated with Trimbakeshwar Temple is that of Lord Vishnu’s incarnation as Trivikrama or Vamana. According to legend, there was once a demon king named Bali, who conquered all the three worlds with his power and generosity. He was a devotee of Lord Vishnu and performed a great sacrifice called Vishwajit Yajna to please him. However, his rule was oppressive for the gods and sages, who sought Lord Vishnu’s help to restore balance in the universe. Lord Vishnu decided to test Bali’s devotion and appeared before him as a dwarf brahmin named Vamana. He asked Bali for three steps of land as alms.

Bali agreed to grant Vamana’s request, thinking that he was asking for a small piece of land. However, Vamana revealed his true form as Trivikrama, the giant form of Lord Vishnu, and covered the earth and the sky with his first two steps. He then asked Bali where he should place his third step. Bali realized his folly and surrendered to Trivikrama. He offered his head as the third step and asked for forgiveness. Trivikrama was impressed by Bali’s humility and generosity and granted him a boon. He allowed Bali to rule the netherworld and visit his subjects once a year during Diwali. He also placed his foot on the Brahmagiri mountain, where Trimbakeshwar Temple is located, and blessed the place with his presence.

According to legend, there was once a war between the gods and the demons over a pot of nectar or amrita, which could grant immortality to anyone who drank it. About Trimbakeshwar Temple

The Trimbakeshwar Temple, renowned for its spiritual significance, celebrated the completion of its renovation on Mahashivaratri , on February 16, 1756, marking a momentous occasion with traditional music and fanfare. This renovation, a vision of Shreemant Nanasaaheba Peshave, spanned 31 years under the dedicated efforts of 786 craftsmen, supported by a large contingent of animals to transport marble from Rajasthan . The project cost amounted to 9 lakh rupees, with the commencement and completion dates inscribed in Sanskrit on the north gate.

Spanning 265 feet in length and 218 feet in breadth, the temple stands as an architectural marvel with entry gates on all sides, symbolizing different spiritual concepts: beginning (East), maturity (West), fulfillment (South), and revelation (North). The north gate serves as the main entrance, leading to a spacious courtyard and the central temple structure that measures 160 by 131 feet, with a dome diameter of 185 feet and a height of 96 feet from the ground. Notable features include three golden pinnacles donated by Annasaheb Vinchurakara, a Nandi temple opposite the main gate, and a symbolic turtle in the dome-shaped hall representing the withdrawal of vices for divine protection.

The temple’s sanctum houses a natural Shiva ling, accompanied by three smaller Ban lings representing the trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh, with a continuous flow of water symbolizing the Ganges. A marble statue of Goddess Parvati is also present, enhancing the sanctity and beauty of this revered site.

Trimbakeshwar Temple and Jyotirlinga Story

Trimbakeshwar Temple is special because it’s one of only 12 unique temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, the powerful god from Hindu stories. Its history is filled with tales of gods and magic. The story begins with two gods, Vishnu and Brahma, arguing over who is the greatest. To settle their dispute, Lord Shiva decided to test them by transforming into a never-ending pillar of light called a Jyotirlinga, stretching through all of creation.

Brahma and Vishnu went in opposite directions to find the end of this light, but only Brahma lied about reaching it, hoping to win the argument. This dishonesty made Shiva very angry. He appeared again as a light pillar and punished Brahma by declaring that people would not worship him on Earth, while Vishnu would be adored forever.

This tale teaches us about the Jyotirlinga, a symbol of Lord Shiva’s endless nature. Out of 64 Jyotirlingas, only 12 are considered truly sacred, and each one is a different representation of Lord Shiva. These sites remind us that Shiva is boundless, formless, and the eternal soul of everything.

The Birth of the Trimbakeshwar Temple:

Trimbak, known for its wise sages, was the home of Gautam Rishi and his wife, Ahilya. They faced a tough time when a severe drought hit, but Gautam Rishi’s prayers brought them rain, thanks to the Rain God, Lord Varuna. The rain was a blessing, allowing Gautam Rishi to grow crops and feed many who sought shelter with him, earning him great merit.

However, Gautam Rishi’s peaceful life took a turn when he accidentally killed a cow, which was Parvati’s friend, Jaya, in disguise. This act led others to avoid his ashram. Desperate to clear his sin, Gautam Rishi sought advice from other sages, who suggested praying to Lord Shiva for forgiveness by bathing in the Ganges. After a thousand years of penance, Lord Shiva, moved by his devotion, commanded the Ganges to flow down, enabling Gautam Rishi to cleanse his sins.

The temple at Trimbakeshwar stands as a vibrant place of worship, home to one of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas. However, the temple also faces challenges, such as the erosion of its unique lingam due to water use, reflecting broader concerns about human impact.

Trimbakeshwar is notable for its three-faced lingam representing Lords Vishnu, Brahma, and Rudra, adorned with a precious jeweled crown linked to the Pandavas’ era. It’s a marvel of religious significance and historical wealth, once home to the Nassak Diamond, lost during British rule.
