Upcoming Star Trek TV Shows: What's Ahead For The Sci-Fi Franchise

Here's what's ahead for Star Trek.

Michael Burnham on Star Trek: Discovery

It’s a golden era for Star Trek tv shows, as the franchise is churning out more content than ever before. Fans with a Paramount+ subscription can stream a plethora of old and new content from one of the greatest sci-fi franchises of all time.

There’s a ton of new Star Trek content coming in the future, including the debut of a new show as well as the return of all the ones fans already know well. For those who need a breakdown of what all to expect, look no further because here’s where and when all the new Trek will arrive in 2023 and beyond. There’s even some information on planned shows that aren’t quite ready yet, but hopefully, we’ll see them soon enough.

Sonequa Martin-Green in Star Trek: Discovery

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 - Premiering On April 4th 2024

Captain Michael Burnham and the crew are back, and based on what we've seen and heard about Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 so far, some changes are on the way. Season 5 will see the crew race against others in an attempt to secure an ancient power, and will apparently have a tonal shift that will skew more toward action and adventure. We also learned that this coming season will be the final adventure , as Paramount+ decided to end the series after this coming season. The final season will kick off in April and, fingers crossed, leave an avenue open for more stories with these characters in the 32nd century.

Anson Mount as Christopher Pike in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 - In Production

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is coming back for Season 3, and is currently filming for the upcoming season. It's likely the season will kick off with the second part of the adventure started in the Season 2 finale . Pike must decide whether or not he's going to listen to Starfleet and retreat to avoid further conflict with the Gorn or to stay and try to save the kidnapped crew members. I have a hunch I know what decision he'll make, but I'm also very invested in seeing if Scotty will remain with the crew and what other adventures will come as well.

Hologram Janeway in Star Trek: Prodigy

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 - Coming In 2024

Paramount+ originally renewed Star Trek: Prodigy for Season 2, but announced later that it had been canceled alongside other shows on the platform. While the news was a bummer to many and encouraged responses from stars like Kate Mulgrew , there is a silver lining. After some talk with other companies, Paramount managed to negotiate a deal where the series will transition over to Netflix , and Season 2 will release over there. At this time, it's unknown whether or not this will lead to more seasons of Prodigy , but fans are thankful they'll at least get to see the season that was being worked on coming up in 2024.

Georgiou in Star Trek: Discovery

Section 31 Movie - Production Underway

Section 31 was one of the first Star Trek spinoffs announced after Discovery , and yet it took the longest to get off the ground. The series was supposed to Michelle Yeoh ’s Phillipa Georgiou and her efforts in the secret ops Starfleet faction that does the jobs that others in the organization would rather not know about. Other former Discovery stars, like Shazad Latif, were involved at one point, but some believed the odds of it happening aren't great after Michelle Yeoh's Oscar win .

It turns out Yeoh was interested in making it happen, and Paramount+ decided to alter the idea to a movie . Fans are excited about the project all the same, and ready to see Michelle Yeoh back in her role. Production on the film is officially underway, and it's looking like a premiere sometime in late 2024 to 2025 is likely.

Tilly in Star Trek: Discovery

Starfleet Academy - Production Starting In 2024

Alex Kurtzman revealed not long ago that Star Trek is actively working on another new live-action series , and it’s going to be set at Starfleet Academy. Of course, we don’t know exactly what era this series is set to take place during or who is going to star in it yet. We don’t really know much of anything, though it’s worth noting that Star Trek: Discovery did write off its character Tilly when she took an offer at Starfleet Academy. The episode where that happened seemed like it could be a backdoor pilot for the show, but again, we have no idea. We do know that the writer's room is underway, but details are scant beyond that.

As shown above, there’s still a ton of Star Trek on the way in 2024, and beyond. The only way to watch these shows is with a Paramount+ subscription , which is totally worth picking up with the increasing amount of shows and movies available to watch.

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Release Date

Premiere date prediction: Late 2022, Early 2023

We don’t yet have a release date for the third season of Patrick Stewart’s Star Trek , but it is currently in production (or, you know, hopefully ), so the wait between Season 2 and 3 will likely much shorter than the one between Season 1 and 2.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Announced

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 Announced

You know a media company has a lot of faith in a new series when it gets a Season 2 renewal before it’s even premiered. This is the case with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , which hopefully means Paramount has liked what it has seen of its first season.

Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4 Announced

Star Trek: Lower Decks will be back for a Season 4! The fourth season will consist of 10 episodes, and does not yet have a release date.

Currently Airing: Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds | Season 2 Official Trailer | Paramount+

The Enterprise is back after a successful first season , and this time Captain Kirk will be along for the ride with another appearance by Paul Wesley after his surprise finale role in season one. Not much else is known about the season so far, other than one episode will see the show crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks in a live-action/animated hybrid directed by The Next Generation ’s Jonathan Frakes. The show has also been renewed for a third season .

Season two recaps:

“ The Broken Circle ”

“ Ad Astra per Aspera ”

“ Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow ”

“ Among the Lotus Eaters ”

“ Charades ”

Upcoming: Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 4

The third season of the animated series following the misfit crew of the USS Cerritos —and in particular its cadre of ensigns, Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Boimler (Jack Quaid), Tendi (Noël Wells), and Rutherford (Eugene Cordero)—once again followed our heroic ensigns and the remaining bridge officers aboard the Cerritos. Season four will be arriving in late summer . The show has also been renewed for a fifth season .

Upcoming: Star Trek: Discovery Season 5

Expected in early 2024 , Discovery ’s fifth season will be 10 episodes long, down from the 13 of prior seasons. In the wake of season four‘s climax earlier this year , Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) led her crew in a desperate attempt to save the galaxy from a mysterious anomaly created by an extra-galactic race, ensuring peace and stability for the Federation once more... for now. As her romantic partner Book (David Ajala) pays time for his own role in a campaign to surreptitiously destroy that anomaly, we’re not sure what awaits Burnham and Discovery ’s crew just yet, but given this show, we’re sure it’ll be very, very dramatic.

In Flux: Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2

The animated series aimed at younger Trek fans (and Janeway fans!) and kids at heart can be found on both Nickelodeon and Paramount+. The first season was divided into two parts, with part two wrapping up at the end of 2022; after Paramount+ announced it would not move forward with the show’s already greenlit season two , it was removed from the service . ( A home release of the complete first season is still possible ; the first 10 episodes are still available for purchase.) Fans are still waiting to hear if Prodigy season two will surface on a different outlet .

Upcoming: Starfleet Academy

It’s really happening! After a long tease, filming on this series will begin in 2024. Here’s the official announcement from co-showrunners and executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau:

“Admission is now open to Starfleet Academy! Explore the galaxy! Captain your destiny! For the first time in over a century, our campus will be re-opened to admit individuals a minimum of 16 Earth years (or species equivalent) who dream of exceeding their physical, mental and spiritual limits, who value friendship, camaraderie, honor and devotion to a cause greater than themselves. The coursework will be rigorous, the instructors among the brightest lights in their respective fields, and those accepted will live and study side-by-side with the most diverse population of students ever admitted. Today we encourage all who share our dreams, goals and values to join a new generation of visionary cadets as they take their first steps toward creating a bright future for us all. Apply today!   Ex Astris, Scientia!”

Upcoming (movie): Star Trek: Section 31

Announced as a TV series back in 2019 as a spinoff for fan-favorite Discovery guest star Michelle Yeoh, this plunge into the seediest side of Starfleet—the shadowy spy organization Section 31 first introduced in Deep Space Nine— is now planned as a Paramount+ film .

Newly minted Oscar winner Yeoh will return as former emperor of the Mirror Universe’s Terran Empire, Phillipa Georgiou, now turned into a kinder, but still kickass person by her time with Michael Burnham. “I’m beyond thrilled to return to my Star Trek family and to the role I’ve loved for so long,” Yeoh said in a statement. “ Section 31 has been near and dear to my heart since I began the journey of playing Philippa all the way back when this new golden age of Star Trek launched. To see her finally get her moment is a dream come true in a year that’s shown me the incredible power of never giving up on your dreams. We can’t wait to share what’s in store for you, and until then: live long and prosper (unless Emperor Georgiou decrees otherwise)!”

Written by Craig Sweeny and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, Star Trek: Section 31 will start production later this year, and eventually come to Paramount+.

The future never ends. At the center of Star Trek’s core message is the idea that things will go on, and arguably continue to improve, because the future never ends and through community, communication, and the need to explore, new heights will be reached and new frontiers discovered. It’s something to think about as the final season of Star Trek: Discovery airs, taking the franchise further into the future than ever before… but the story will not end when that series does.

Whether it’s William Shatner’s James T. Kirk, Patrick Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard, Avery Brooks’ Benjamin Sisko, or any of the subsequent commanders and captains of the many starships of Starfleet, generations of viewers have found themselves in good hands when it comes to navigating the outer limits of reality on a regular basis… and, these days, there are more opportunities than ever to transport into space for a trek of your own.

Even with 2023’s final season of Picard, there are no fewer than four ongoing Star Trek series right now — with even more on the way, and the return of the franchise to the big screen, with multiple movies in the works. There’s so much happening, in fact, that it’s easy to lose track… which is why you should keep reading and find out what to expect from Star Trek across the next few years. (Spoilers: the final frontier is getting a lot bigger.)

Upcoming Star Trek movies and TV show schedule

There’s no shortage of Star Trek in the pipeline for the next few years, but no official dates have been announced by CBS or Paramount for anything outside of Star Trek: Discovery season five coming in April. That doesn’t mean that we have no idea when some projects should be dropping, based on how far along they are in terms of production, or simply teases given by those involved.

Here’s a quick rundown of the projects that have been announced from Star Trek that exist on some form of schedule, however vague. (There are many unscheduled projects, which we’ll get to at warp speed, don’t worry.)

What Star Trek TV series are planned?

Star trek: prodigy, season two.

Star Trek

While Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 was originally announced to debut on Paramount+ in the winter of 2023, Paramount+ has nixed those plans — but the show was picked up by Netflix, with new episodes already announced for some point in 2024. (The first season was added to the platform in December 2023.)

Release Date: TBD 2024

Platform: Netflix

Star Trek: Lower Decks, season five

Star Trek

A fifth season for the animated comedy set in the period between Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Picard was announced in April 2023, but no premiere date is known. Judging by the period between order and broadcast for the fourth season, however, it’s relatively safe to assume that a new season might be ready by the end of 2024, unless the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes of 2023 threw everything entirely off schedule.

Platform: Paramount+

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, season three

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 art

As if the second season cliffhanger wasn't enough of a clue that the popular spin-off of Discovery — which is also a prequel to the original Star Trek series from the 1960s —would return, the show's third season renewal was announced back in April 2023 . But after a second season that included a half-animated crossover episode and a musical, how can they top what they've already achieved? A clue arrived in a recent article mentioning a murder mystery episode , and we’ll see what else the show is planning to wow fans when it returns at some point in 2025.

Release Date: TBD 2025

Movies & TV Shows with No Approximate Schedule Yet

Star trek: section 31.

Star Trek: Section 31

Even before the character of Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) left the Discovery narrative, rumors of a Section 31 spinoff starring the Oscar Award-winning actress have swirled. In mid-April 2023, it was officially announced that a Star Trek: Section 31 “special movie event” starring Yeoh had been greenlit by Paramount+ .

Yeoh, who originated the idea for a Section 31 spinoff herself, will serve as executive producer with Alex Kurtzman. Additional details from the announcement include the fact that Section 31 will be written by Craig Sweeny and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi (director of many episodes of Discovery ). However, it remains to be seen what other familiar Trek characters may appear in the show, if any. The movie is currently in post-production, which makes a late 2024 or early 2025 release likely — and Yeoh has already said that she’d be willing to make more if this one goes over well.

Release Date: TBD

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

Star Trek

In late March 2023, it was announced that Starfleet Academy season 1 had been ordered. Very few details have been revealed about the series, although we do have confirmation that it will be a live-action series. The announcement refers to it being “the first time in over a century” that individuals will be admitted to the Academy implied the series will be set around the same time period as Discovery seasons 3, 4 and 5 , which was later confirmed by Paramount executives .

However, we do know some of those behind the scenes who will be involved with Starfleet Academy. Serving as showrunners and executive producers will be Kurtzman and Noga Landau. Furthermore, in a Tweet sent shortly after the series order was announced, Lower Decks star Tawny Newsome revealed that she has joined the show’s writers room.

Star Trek 4

Star Trek Beyond

In April 2021, a new Star Trek movie was announced for release on June 9, 2023. It was subsequently revealed to be a fourth movie in the Kelvin Timeline. WandaVision alum Matt Shakman was attached to the project before he accepted the directorial role for the upcoming Fantastic Four MCU adaptation; he subsequently left the project, which placed it in turnaround.

Long believed to be quietly dead, sources inside Paramount have recently said that it’s still active and in development. And yet, it's not all good news - according to Variety , the fourth entry into the Chris Pine-starring Star Trek saga will be "the final chapter” in that particular series.

Platform: Theatrical

Untitled Star Trek prequel

Having wowed fans with his work on Lucasfilm’s Andor series, director Toby Haynes is reportedly developing a new Star Trek movie set decades before J.J. Abrams’ 2009 reboot of the franchise , with writer Seth Grahame-Smith onboard to write. Little is known about the project including just what timeline of Trek it’s going to take place in; initial reports suggested it was part of the Kelvin timeline — which is to say, the continuity of the 2009 reboot movies — but more recently , it was described as being part of the core timeline of the franchise. (Of course, in that it’s a prequel set before Nero changed history in that 2009 movie, it’s possible that it could be both. Time travel is confusing.)

Untitled Picard movie

Picard

The open question over what, if anything, Paramount would do to follow up on the success of the third and final season of Picard might have an answer. While Picard showrunner Terry Malalas had teased a new series called Legacy — see below — Patrick Stewart revealed in a recent interview that he’s heard of a movie script written specifically for Picard, although he hadn’t read it and couldn’t give any further details. Will this feature more of the reunited TNG cast, or is it something entirely different? And is it meant as a Paramount+ project a la Section 31, or a theatrical release? Time will tell…

Platform: TBD

Potentially Abandoned Projects

Quentin tarantino’s trek.

At one point, legendary director Quentin Tarantino was talking about directing an R-rated movie set in the Star Trek universe, with another writer working from an idea he had that was reportedly a time travel movie that would take inspiration from the original series episode ‘A Piece of the Action.’ Things progressed to a small degree with writer Mark L. Smith before Tarantino decided that he didn’t want to direct it, but the screenplay exists and Tarantino has said that he’d be willing to offer notes for any new director . We can but hope this oddity one day happens.

Star Trek: Legacy

One unannounced project remains at the forefront of Trekkie agendas everywhere: the proposed Picard semi-sequel, Star Trek: Legacy. The title was revealed by Picard season 3 showrunner Terry Matalas on Twitter in March 2023, while Picard’s wildly popular third season was being released. Matalas stated the proposed series would be set in the 25th century, following up on storylines and characters from “the Last Generation and the Next.”

While the series has yet to be officially commented upon by Paramount or CBS, fans have signed online petitions in support of the idea, and at least one Trek executive seems in favor; In interviews in support of Strange New Worlds season 2, Akiva Goldsman voiced his continued advocacy for a continuation of the vision Matalas has for the Franchise. “Let me put it this way,” Goldsman said during an interview with CinemaBlend. “I signed the petition too.”

It’s unclear whether or not the Picard movie project mentioned above is a variation on the Legacy idea, or an entirely separate project.

Is Star Trek 4 confirmed?

As we mentioned earlier, a fourth and final Star Trek movie set in the Kelvin Timeline — the alternate timeline created with J.J. Abrams’ 2009 reboot of the franchise, featuring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Karl Urban as Kirk, Spock, and Bones, respectively — is in development, although it’s unclear at what stage at time of writing. Certainly all parties involved seem to want to make it happen, so at this point, we should consider it a question of when it’ll happen.

What is the most current Star Trek?

Currently, episodes of the final season of Star Trek: Discovery are airing on Thursdays on Paramount+, running through the end of May 2024.

What’s the next Star Trek series?

At time of current writing, the second season of Star Trek: Prodigy is anticipated to be the next Star Trek show to debut, at some point on Netflix. The next all-new series to debut will be Starfleet Academy, which we can likely expect at some point in 2025.

Will there be another Star Trek with Jack Crusher?

One of the breakout stars of Picard, season 3, Ed Speleere portrays Jack Crusher, a new addition to the Star Trek universe with ties that go back generations (or at least, to the new one). After the third season fo the Patrick Stewart-starring spinoff wrapped, fans were very curious about whether we'd see Crusher again.

Unfortunately, there's no confirmed answer to this question. However, that hasn't stopped folks like Susana Polo at Polygon from speculating about Crusher's future, particularly how it could connect to the rumors of Star Trek: Legacy. Be warned before you read that speculation, though; it contains major spoilers for Picard season 3.

Space may be the final frontier, but there's no end to Popverse's love of the Star Trek universe. Hop aboard the starship Enterprise with our Star Trek watch order , explore strange new worlds with our upcoming Star Trek TV shows and movies list , seek out the new life of the franchise , and boldly go where no Star TRek film has ever gone before - with Quentin Tarantino ?

The show has also been renewed for a third season .

Season two recaps:

  • “ The Broken Circle ”
  • “ Ad Astra per Aspera ”
  • “ Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow ”

next star trek tv release date

The third season of the animated series following the misfit crew of the USS Cerritos —and in particular its cadre of ensigns, Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Boimler (Jack Quaid), Tendi (Noël Wells), and Rutherford (Eugene Cordero)—once again followed our heroic ensigns and the remaining bridge officers aboard the Cerritos. Season four will be arriving in late summer . The show has also been renewed for a fifth season .

Upcoming: Star Trek: Discovery Season 5

next star trek tv release date

Expected in early 2024 , Discovery ’s fifth season will be 10 episodes long, down from the 13 of prior seasons. In the wake of season four‘s climax earlier this year , Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) led her crew in a desperate attempt to save the galaxy from a mysterious anomaly created by an extra-galactic race, ensuring peace and stability for the Federation once more… for now. As her romantic partner Book (David Ajala) pays time for his own role in a campaign to surreptitiously destroy that anomaly, we’re not sure what awaits Burnham and Discovery ’s crew just yet, but given this show, we’re sure it’ll be very, very dramatic.

In Flux: Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2

next star trek tv release date

Upcoming (movie): Star Trek: Section 31

next star trek tv release date

Announced as a TV series back in 2019 as a spinoff for fan-favourite Discovery guest star Michelle Yeoh, this plunge into the seediest side of Starfleet—the shadowy spy organisation Section 31 first introduced in Deep Space Nine— is now planned as a Paramount+ film .

Trekkies have a lot to be thankful for this year as the Star Trek franchise we all know and love shows no signs of slowing down!

As of now, there are four series in production within the entire franchise. Before streaming took over in the mid 2010s, there were only five broadcast series on air including The Original Series ,  The Next Generation ,  Deep Space Nine ,  Voyager , and  Enterprise . Now, with so many additions, both animated and live-action, it seems almost impossible to keep track of what to watch next, but you’ve come to the right place.

If you’ve been wondering when and where you can watch the current and upcoming seasons of Star Trek series and learn what anticipated films are set to be made, read on to find out!

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

The most recently released live-action series in the franchise received positive reviews and has already been ordered for a third season ahead of its second season release. Strange New Worlds is set a decade before the events of the original series in the 23rd century and offers up a contemporary take on the original series’ episodic storytelling and 1960s design choices.

The main cast includes Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia, Babs Olusanmokun, Bruce Horak, and Rebecca Romijn as Number One. The second season will premiere on Paramount+ on June 15 .

Star Trek: Lower Decks

The adult animated series takes place in the late 24th century in the Star Trek universe, in which Earth is part of the multi-species United Federation of Planets and focuses on Starfleet’s least important starships, the USS Cerritos.

The main cast includes Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noël Wells, Eugene Cordero, Dawnn Lewis, and Jerry O’Connell. Even though the fourth season has yet to premiere, a fifth season was ordered in March 2023 and is already in development. Season 4 is scheduled to premiere on the streaming service Paramount+ in Summer 2023  with a 10-episode run.

Star Trek: Prodigy

Another wildly popular animated series in the franchise, Nickelodeon’s P rodigy is returning for a second season. The main cast includes Brett Gray, Ella Purnell, Jason Mantzoukas, Angus Imrie, Dee Bradley Baker, and Kate Mulgrew.

The series, which was met with positive reviews from critics and even received a Children’s and Family Emmy Award, has been airing since 2021. While an exact release date has not yet been set, season 2 will arrive this upcoming winter on Nickelodeon and Paramount+.

Star Trek: Discovery

The live-action series begins around ten years before the events of The Original Series which aired in the mid to late ’60s. The main cast includes Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Shazad Latif, Anthony Rapp, and Mary Wiseman. A final 10-episode fifth season was ordered in January 2022 and is expected to premiere on the streaming service Paramount+ in early 2024.

Star Trek 4

The long-awaited sequel to the 2016 film Star Trek Beyond was originally supposed to be released in December 2023 but has since been pushed back. It is unclear when the film will be released in theaters.

Star Trek: Section 31

This movie is based on the novels that explore the operations of the clandestine organization known as Section 31 and expected to be released on streaming platform Paramount+. The film stars Michelle Yeoh who first appeared in Star Trek: Discovery as Captain Philippa Georgiou. Yeoh returns as an alternate universe version of her character who is now named Emperor Philippa Georgiou. She’ll be the central character in this movie. It is yet to be announced when filming will start but keep your eyes peeled for a date soon!

It's a hugely exciting time to be a Star Trek fan, especially after the news that we'll be getting a new prequel movie from the director of Andor!

The Star Trek franchise has enjoyed a dramatic revitalisation in recent years, returning to its original home on the small screen to launch a sprawling shared universe of exciting shows.

Coming up next in the world of Star Trek, we've got Star Trek: Discovery season 5 to look forward to, as well as Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 after the series was saved by Netflix – and more! Meanwhile, Star Trek: Picard wrapped up with a third and final season, while we got renewals for shows like Lower Decks .

Below, we've compiled how to watch Star Trek in release and chronological order, while we also weigh in on the pros and cons of each method. Once you have all the information you need, venture forth into the final frontier.

Star Trek: The Next Generation - All Good Things

Arguably, the most faithful way of watching Star Trek is in the order each series was made, allowing you to follow the franchise from its inception and explore its universe as the original fans did decades ago.

It makes sense to do it this way as while the shows do jump around in terms of time period, they still find ways to build on what came before in order of release.

In that sense, you're likely to get a slightly more complete picture of Star Trek by watching in this order, instead of piecing the shows together in a chronological timeline.

* Star Trek: Short Treks premiered after Discovery, hence the listing here. However, Short Treks season 2 sets up some plot threads picked up in Discovery season 2 and beyond, so it's best to alternate between them if you can.

Some people who watch in this order choose to skip over the first three steps and begin with Star Trek: The Next Generation. There is a belief among certain Trekkies that TNG has aged better than The Original Series, making it an easier entry point for newcomers to the franchise.

It would be worth watching the first few episodes of TOS to see what you think of it, but if William Shatner's Captain Kirk doesn't quite cut it for you, feel free to move on to the dulcet tones of Patrick Stewart's Jean-Luc Picard. The two shows have relatively few connections, so you don't need to worry about feeling lost (although they do eventually cross over in a major way in the Star Trek: Generations movie).

How to watch Star Trek in chronological order

Star Trek: Discovery

As previously stated, the various shows in the Star Trek universe take place at different points in a sprawling timeline, so an alternative method is to watch in chronological order.

This comes with pros and cons: on the one hand, it allows you to begin with a modern show, which may be preferable to some people. But on the other hand, some of the references contained in more recent episodes may not land with you in the way they were intended.

Star Trek chronological order (films listed in italics )

  • Star Trek: Enterprise (Year: 2151-2161)
  • Short Trek: The Girl Who Made the Stars (Year: 2230s)
  • Short Trek: The Brightest Star (Year: 2239)
  • Star Trek: The Cage – The Original Series one-off pilot episode (Year: 2254)
  • Short Trek: The Escape Artist (Year: 2250s)
  • Short Trek: Q&A (Year: 2253)
  • Star Trek: Discovery season 1 (Year: 2256)
  • Short Trek: Runaway (Year: 2257)
  • Star Trek: Discovery season 2 (Year: 2258)
  • Short Trek: The Trouble with Edward (Year: 2250s)
  • Short Trek: Ask Not (Year: 2250s)
  • Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (Year: 2259)
  • Star Trek: The Original Series (Year: 2265-2269)
  • Short Trek: Ephraim and Dot (Year: 2267-2285)
  • Star Trek: The Animated Series (Year: 2269-2270)
  • The first six Star Trek films (Year: 2273-2293)
  • Star Trek: The Next Generation (Year: 2364-2370)
  • Star Trek films 7-10: Generations up to Nemesis (Year: 2293-2379)
  • Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (Year: 2369-2375)
  • Star Trek: Voyager (Year: 2371-2378)
  • Star Trek: Lower Decks (2380)
  • Star Trek: Prodigy (Year: 2383)
  • Short Trek: Children of Mars (Year: 2385)
  • Star Trek: Picard seasons 1-3 (Year: 2399-2402)
  • Star Trek: Discovery seasons 3-4 (32nd Century)
  • Short Trek: Calypso (far future, year unknown)

Note – Star Trek: Short Treks was a two-season anthology series, which visits various periods on the franchise timeline. Anything listed as a Short Trek is a single episode of this show (with a runtime between 8 and 18 minutes).

It's not currently confirmed where precisely Toby Haynes' film will sit in the chronology but we do know it'll be a prequel film, taking place "decades" before Star Trek (2009).

For those wondering, the recent trilogy of Star Trek movies directed by JJ Abrams and Justin Lin – Star Trek, Into Darkness and Beyond – are set in an alternate universe, meaning they do not connect to a chronological order of the series.

They do, however, contain references to The Original Series – most notably the return of Leonard Nimoy as Spock – but can be watched at any point as standalone stories.

I n Episode 4 of Star Trek: Discovery season 5, titled Face the Strange , the Discovery crew finds themselves stuck in a time loop due to a time-distorting bug placed on the ship. This episode sees Captain Burnham and Commander Rayner, along with Stamets, navigate through various pivotal moments from the ship's past.

Thereafter, the time loop sends them through events such as the ship's battle with the AI Control, its journey through the wormhole to the 32nd century, and its initial construction. As they relive these moments, Burnham needs to convince her past self and the crew of her identity to garner their assistance in resolving the crisis.

The episode emphasizes emotional bonds and trust, with Rayner learning the importance of these qualities through their time-travel adventures. This installment serves both as a reflection on how far the characters, especially Burnham, have come and as a device to deepen the emotional connections among the crew. How to watch Star Trek in order

Whether you're wanting to check out the Original Series or Discovery, figuring out how to watch Star Trek in order is a breeze with this easy guide!

star trek discovery season 3 cast

Is it just us or is figuring out how to watch Star Trek in order getting more and more complex with each passing year? The prospect of watching Star Trek in order would be daunting for even the most decorated of starship captains with multiple series being brought to life on both the big and small screens. But fear not Trekkies - we've got you covered!

If you've ever tried to watch the Marvel movies in order , you'd be forgiven for thinking that was the most complicated franchise on the planet, but we kid you not - it has nothing on Star Trek. The 55-year-old sci-fi franchise includes nine (soon to be 11) TV shows and 13 movies and it spans 1000 years, making for one super complicated and vast timeline.

So, what is the best way to watch Star Trek in order? Well, that depends. For you purists out there, you might like to opt for viewing this franchise by release date, just like all the original Trekkie fans did back in the day. This will allow you to follow along as they did and get a similar experience. While the timeline does jump around, ( Star Trek: Discovery , for example, is set at the end of the 32nd century but was released before Star Trek: Picard , which is set in the 24th century), it gives you a more complete picture.

Because the Star Trek franchise involves movies and TV series that take place at different times, another option is to watch everything in chronological order. This means you get to start with something a little bit more modern, but the one problem with this is that references will often be made to films you've not yet seen, which could make certain elements difficult to follow.

To be honest, just like we recommend in our guide to how to watch the Star Wars movies in order , it really is a matter of personal preference. As long as you have one of the best TVs , you'll find you enjoy this franchise no matter what order you decide to watch it in.

So, without further ado, here's how to watch Star Trek in order - based on release date and in-universe continuity...

Star Trek TV shows and movies in chronological order

This is probably the list you're looking for if you're trying to figure out how to watch Star Trek in order. It's where things get really interesting, as Star Trek movies and TV shows have a habit of jumping around the franchise's chronology with sequels, prequels and bits in between. There are even two distinct timelines – but don't worry, we'll explain all that.

The original ‘Prime’ timeline was started by the Original Series, the Next Generation-era TV shows, and the first ten movies, The alternative ‘Kelvin’ timeline, meanwhile, was created in JJ Abrams’ first Star Trek (2009) to allow the familiar Enterprise crew of Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, Sulu, Uhura and Chekov to have new adventures without contradicting canon . To avoid confusion, we've defined the two timelines as separate entities below.

This list doesn't, however, include all of the brief Short Treks – short stories which are mostly set around the Star Trek: Discovery era – and adventures where Starfleet crews time-travelled to the eras before any of the shows/movies are set (eg visits to 1986 in The Voyage Home and 2063 in First Contact). We've also left out upcoming Discovery spin-off Star Trek: Section 31 , since it's not yet in production. (Also, we're not entirely sure exactly when it'll be set.)

Let's start with everything in one big list.

  • Star Trek: Enterprise (seasons 1-4)
  • ‘The Cage’
  • Star Trek: Discovery (seasons 1-2)
  • Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
  • Star Trek: The Original Series  (seasons 1-3)
  • Star Trek: The Animated Series
  • Star Trek: The Motion Picture
  • Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan
  • Star Trek 3: The Search for Spock
  • Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home
  • Star Trek 5: The Final Frontier
  • Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country
  • Star Trek: Generations (opening sequence)
  • Star Trek: The Next Generation (seasons 1-5)
  • Star Trek: The Next Generation (seasons 6-7), Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (seasons 1-2)
  • Star Trek: Generations
  • Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (seasons 3-4), Star Trek: Voyager (seasons 1-2)
  • Star Trek: First Contact
  • Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (seasons 5-6), Star Trek: Voyager (seasons 3-4)
  • Star Trek: Insurrection
  • S tar Trek: Deep Space Nine (season 7), Star Trek: Voyager (season 5)
  • Star Trek: Voyager (seasons 6-7)
  • Star Trek: Nemesis
  • Star Trek: Lower Decks
  • Star Trek: Prodigy
  • Star Trek (2009) – Prime timeline sequences
  • Star Trek: Picard
  • Star Trek: Discovery (season 3-)
  • Short Treks: 'Calypso'

If you watch in the order given above, you'll get a continuous ‘history’ of the 22nd, 23rd, 24th and 32nd centuries according to the Star Trek timeline. That said, you will notice some odd discrepancies – thanks to the time in which respective shows were made, the technology in prequel show Star Trek: Discovery is significantly more advanced than what Kirk and Spock used in the Original Series.

Below, we'll explain how the different eras of the shows and movies break down for context.

Note that Gene Roddenberry's original pre-Kirk Star Trek pilot, 'The Cage', is counted as an instalment of the Original Series. You'll usually find it listed as a bonus episode as part of season one when you're watching it on streaming services.

Star Trek: Enterprise era (22nd century) Begins and ends with: Star Trek Enterprise seasons 1-4

About a century before James T Kirk and his crew embark on their famous five-year mission in Star Trek: The Original Series, Captain Jonathan Archer leads Earth's first steps into the wider universe.

Star Trek: The Original Series

Star Trek: The Original Series era (23rd century) Begins with: 'The Cage' Ends with: Star Trek: Generations (opening sequence)

For many this is the most familiar era of Star Trek, since it involves Kirk, Spock and the classic Enterprise crew.

This section of the Trek timeline kicks off with the original unaired Star Trek pilot, 'The Cage' . Next up in franchise chronology are the first two seasons of Star Trek: Discovery , which work as a prequel to the Original Series (they even feature a younger version of Spock), but it's all change in season 3 – the events of the season 2 finale send the crew into the distant future of the 32nd century. More on that later...

Upcoming spin-off Strange New Worlds will follow the adventures of Captain Pike, Number One and Spock on the Enterprise after the USS Discovery travelled to the future. And at some point after that, Captain James T Kirk will take command of Starfleet's most famous ship – a role he filled throughout The Original Series , The Animated Series and the first six Star Trek movies ( Star Trek: The Motion Picture , The Wrath of Khan , The Search for Spock , The Voyage Home , The Final Frontier and The Undiscovered Country ).

The latest point we've seen (so far) in the 23rd century era is James T Kirk being taken away by the Nexus ribbon in the prologue of Star Trek: Generations . This is the event that allows Kirk to meet Picard when the Next Generation crew take on the mantle of headlining the big screen franchise.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Star Trek: The Next Generation era (24th century) Begins with: Star Trek: The Next Generation Ends with: Star Trek (2009) – Prime timeline sequences

The richest, most complicated period in Star Trek chronology. During The Next Generation era, Star Trek was experimenting with the idea of a shared universe years before Marvel got in on the act, with three TV shows (TNG, Deep Space Nine and Voyager ) and four movies ( Generations , First Contact , Insurrection and Nemesis ) interweaving through the same timeline – Voyager's Captain Kathryn Janeway even shows up in Star Trek: Nemesis as a newly promoted admiral.

New animated comedy spin-off Lower Decks is set a year after Picard and the Next Generation crew's final mission in Star Trek: Nemesis, while Nickelodeon kids' cartoon Star Trek: Prodigy will see Kate Mulgrew reprising her role as Voyager's captain, Kathryn Janeway. That suggests it will presumably be set at a similar point in the Star Trek timeline.

In JJ Abrams' first Star Trek movie (2009), the destruction of Romulus and Spock Prime's accidental trip back to the pre-Original Series era (in the Kelvin timeline) also take place after the events of Nemesis.

In the list above, we've shown how the movies (roughly) fit into the chronology of The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager.

Star trek: Picard

Picard era (turn of the 25th century) Begins with: Picard Ends with: ???

Aside from glimpses of the destruction of Romulus in JJ Abrams’ Star Trek (2009), Star Trek: Picard gives us our first post-Star Trek: Nemesis look at what the United Federation of Planets has become.

Since we last saw Jean-Luc Picard, he's retired to his vineyard in France, an android uprising on Mars has led to a ban on all synthetic life, and a disabled Borg Cube (known simply as the 'Artifact') is being mined for technology.

star trek discovery season 3 story

Distant future (32nd century) Begins with : Star Trek: Discovery season 2 (finale) Ends with: ???

In order to save the galaxy, the brave crew of the USS Discovery set off on a one-way mission 900 years into the future in Star Trek: Discovery 's season 2 finale. Their 32nd century destination is new territory for Star Trek – thanks to the mysterious 'Burn', most of the dilithium in the galaxy has been destroyed, making warp travel impossible. As a result, the Federation is a shadow of its former self – even Earth has decided to go it alone.

This isn't, however, the furthest Star Trek has ventured into the future – Short Trek ' Calypso ' is set on the Discovery in a distant future where the ship's computer has become sentient.

Star Trek's alternate 'Kelvin' timeline explained

A still from Star trek Beyond

In 2009's Star Trek movie directed by JJ Abrams, Spock Prime tries to save Romulus from a supernova, inadvertently creates a black hole while doing so, and gets pulled into the past, along with Romulan mining vessel the Narada. Once there, the Narada attacks the USS Kelvin on the day James T Kirk is born. The ship is destroyed as Kirk's father, George, sacrifices himself to save the rest of the crew.

When all that happens, the alternative ‘Kelvin’ timeline is created, with events unfolding in parallel (but with remarkable similarity) to the original Prime timeline.

Got all that? There are just three movies set in the Kelvin timeline:

  • Star Trek (2009)
  • Star Trek into Darkness
  • Star Trek Beyond

Considering The Original Series was cancelled after just three seasons in 1969, it's remarkable that Star Trek is still around half a century later. But as the show's popularity grew in syndication on US TV, Trek fandom became a big enough force for the five-year mission to resume via Star Trek: The Animated Series in 1973. Most of the original cast – with the notable exception of Walter Koenig (Chekov) – were enticed back to voice their characters.

Then, helped by Star Wars turning sci-fi into the hottest genre in Hollywood, Star Trek beamed onto the big screen with 1979's The Motion Picture . The original crew headed up five more movies ( The Wrath of Khan , The Search for Spock , The Voyage Home , The Final Frontier and The Undiscovered Country ) before bowing out in 1991. The ’80s also gave the world a hint of the Star Trek that never was when 'The Cage' , the original unaired pilot, was released on VHS in 1986 (it appeared on TV two years later). Of the pilot crew, only Leonard Nimoy's Spock went on to reprise his role in the TV show, though footage from 'The Cage' was used extensively in the Original Series’ only two-parter, 'The Menagerie'.

While the Enterprise was making it big in cinemas, the franchise returned to its TV roots in 1987 with The Next Generation . Set over 70 years after Kirk and Spock's final mission, it featured a new crew – led by Captain Jean-Luc Picard – on board a new starship Enterprise. The Next Generation was arguably even more successful than the Original Series, spawning two spin-off series: Deep Space Nine (which began in 1993) played with the Trek format by focusing on a space station, while Voyager (1995) dumped its crew on the other side of the galaxy, hundreds of light years from home.

The Next Generation crew also fronted four movies of their own ( Generations , First Contact , Insurrection and Nemesis ) between 1995 and 2002.

After Voyager came to an end in 2001, Star Trek left the Next Generation era behind, and went in a completely different direction – Star Trek: Enterprise was a prequel set a century before Kirk and Spock's adventures. Enterprise lasted only four seasons, however (The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager all made it to seven), and was canceled in 2005.

These were also dark times for the movie branch of the Trek franchise, as the disappointing box office performance of Nemesis had put the film saga on hiatus – it wasn't until 2009 that Star Trek warped back onto the big screen.

Future Star Wars: The Force Awakens director JJ Abrams (already hot property as director of Mission: Impossible 3 and co-creator of Lost) gave the franchise an action blockbuster makeover, recasting Kirk, Spock and the rest of the original crew as rookies on their first mission. The reboot, simply titled Star Trek , made more than twice as much at the box office as any of its predecessors, and two sequels ( Star Trek into Darkness , Star Trek Beyond ) followed.

Star Trek belatedly returned to TV in 2017 with Star Trek: Discovery . Set a decade before the Original Series, it was a darker, more serialized Trek than we’d seen before – more in tune with the prestige shows of the so-called Golden Age of TV. As it’s turned out, it was just the beginning of Star Trek's renewed assault on TV...

A series of brief Short Treks appeared online ahead of Discovery's second season, while The Next Generation follow-up Star Trek: Picard left spacedock in January 2020. Animated series Lower Decks followed in August 2020, and Discovery spin-off Strange New Worlds – featuring Anson Mount's Captain Pike, Rebecca Romijn's Number One and Ethan Peck's Spock on the pre-Kirk Enterprise – is now in production.

There's also another cartoon offering heading for the Alpha Quadrant, in the form of animated kids show Star Trek: Prodigy.

And there's potentially even more to come, as the much-talked about Michelle Yeoh vehicle Section 31 is still in development. But with Paramount Plus programming boss Julie McNamara telling Variety that the streaming service's current aim is to debut "a new Trek every quarter", we may have to wait for Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks and/or Strange New Worlds to stand aside before we get a new TV iteration of Trek.

To keep things simple, all the shows above are listed by the date their first episode aired. While the chronology does jump around if you watch Star Trek in order of release date, there are some benefits. For example, the prequel shows assume a fair bit of knowledge of earlier series, like the Borg's appearance in Star Trek: Enterprise episode 'Regeneration', or Star Trek: Discovery's revelations about the ultimate fate of Christopher Pike (the Enterprise captain in 'The Cage', who later shows up in 'The Menagerie'). Moments like that undoubtedly make more sense in the context of later events in the Star Trek timeline.

J.J. Abrams rebooted the "Star Trek" franchise in 2009, and since then, the three films in the new Kelvin timeline have been a smashing success. Altogether, the first "Trek" reboot, 2013's "Star Trek Into Darkness," and 2016's "Star Trek Beyond" have grossed more than a billion dollars at the global box office. They've also done fairly well critically. With all that love, it seems pretty obvious that Hollywood would want to get "Star Trek 4" to theater screens at warp speed.

However, the road to "Star Trek 4" has not been a smooth one. In fact, it's been filled with starts and stops, various creatives coming and going, and a release date that keeps getting beamed all over the place. What do we actually know about the fourth installment of the "Star Trek" reboot series, and what will it look like when it finally makes first contact? Read on for everything we know so far about "Star Trek 4."

What is the release date for Star Trek 4?

"Star Trek 4" has been in the works for a long time ... a really long time. In June 2015, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Chris Pine (Kirk) and Zachary Quinto (Spock) had signed up for "Star Trek 4." But Pine and Chris Hemsworth (who was said to be returning as Kirk's dad) allegedly left a potential fourth project over pay disputes in 2018, and in 2019, it was announced that the film had been shelved. Eventually, the project started moving again and earned a release date of June 9, 2023, but that got kicked back to December 22, 2023 ... before vanishing from the release slate completely.

We have reason to believe "Star Trek 4" is still in the works, however. Speaking with Collider , former director Matt Shakman (who left the project to direct "Fantastic Four") said, "I think what they're still working on is a version of what I have been working on for the time that I was involved." In August 2023, Quinto added his own take on the likelihood of a fourth outing. "I think there's a lot of other stuff, creative things. It's complicated," the actor remarked (via TrekMovie.com ). He continued, "I don't know if and when it will happen ... And if coalesces again and we come back and we're able to do it, wonderful. If not, we had a great run."

In a September 2023 piece on the end of the Writers Guild of America strike, Variety reported that Paramount was looking to polish a "Star Trek 4" script. Another promising nugget of info emerged around this time, when writer-director Lindsey Anderson Beer, who co-wrote a prospective "Star Trek 4" script, told Collider , "It's still on the tracks." So, "Star Trek 4" isn't dead in the water, and with the 2023 Hollywood strikes ended, a major obstacle is gone. But that's pretty much all we know.

What is the plot of Star Trek 4?

At this point, no plot details for the upcoming fourth "Star Trek" movie have been revealed. Some proposed paths forward have been rumored to involve alternate timelines, or even another reboot — especially Tarantino's attempt — but they've all fallen by the wayside. For now, we can probably assume "Star Trek 4" will take place after the events of 2016's "Star Trek Beyond," which was directed by Justin Lin of the  "Fast and Furious" franchise .

In "Star Trek Beyond," Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise see their beloved ship crash on the planet Altamid after an ambush by a pre-Federation human soldier, Idris Elba's Captain Balthazar Edison. When Kirk and the gang discover Edison's plans to use an ancient bioweapon to destroy the Federation, they're forced to stop him — without the help of their ship. That film also explores the death of Leonard Nimoy's Ambassador Spock, as well as relationship troubles between Spock and Uhura.

One story we know "Star Trek 4" won't be exploring is a reunion between Captain Kirk and his father George, courtesy of time travel. Chris Hemsworth briefly played George Kirk in 2009's "Star Trek," but turned down a chance to reprise the role in a bigger story in 2018. "Star Trek 4" also won't tie into any of the current "Star Trek" TV series, like "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" or "Star Trek: Lower Decks." Those series take place in a universe separate from the Kelvin timeline.

Who is starring in Star Trek 4?

You'd expect a "Star Trek" movie set in the Kelvin timeline to feature the return of the ol' gang, right? Why, yes, you would. However, nothing has been easy about getting "Star Trek 4" off the ground, and that includes bringing back the original cast. In 2018, Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth reportedly walked away from the project over pay disputes. In February 2022, when producer J.J. Abrams announced that "Star Trek 4" was finally moving ahead, new behind-the-scenes drama erupted. While Abrams said the original stars were returning, none of the actors had officially agreed to the project.

In March 2022, Pine told Variety about his reaction to the "Star Trek 4" announcement: "I think everybody was like, 'Did you hear about this?' We're usually the last people to find out, but I do know we're all excited. Whenever they want to send us a script, we're ready for it." Karl Urban had a similar stance, telling the U.K.'s Radio X (via TrekMovie.com ) in May 2022, "I have heard that it is happening, but I've been hearing that for the last three years ... All I know is they are developing it, they're writing a script, and I know 100% that we all want to come back and do it. So I think it's all just a matter of logistics and timing at this point."

Sofia Boutella — who played Jaylah in "Star Trek Beyond" — also expressed interest in returning, saying (via Fandom Spotlite ), "I would love to see [Jaylah] evolve with all of the guys ... I would do it in a heartbeat." However, Zachary Quinto seems a bit wary of the whole thing. During a November 2022 interview with The Independent , the actor said, "At this point, I honestly have very little attachment to it. All of us would like to come back and make another movie, but I've learnt to only get excited about things I know are actually real. And there's nothing about a fourth 'Star Trek' movie that feels real right now."

Will Star Trek 4 recast Chekov?

One of the most classic and beloved "Star Trek" characters, Pavel Chekov was memorably played in the first three Kelvin timeline movies by Anton Yelchin. Yelchin was killed in a car accident in June 2016, just one month before the release of "Star Trek Beyond." His passing has definitely been felt by both fans and his "Star Trek" cohorts.

In March 2022, when the movie was still moving forward under director Matt Shakman, Uhura actress Zoe Saldaña told Entertainment Tonight about the project. "Obviously, it's bittersweet," she remarked, "because we are coming together for a fourth time and one of us is no longer with us with Anton's passing, but we honestly feel that going back and keeping the 'Star Trek' family together is a way to really keep him alive in our thoughts and our hearts because he was such a fan. And he was such a devoted artist to the craft and also to 'Star Trek.'"

Of course, that particular version of "Star Trek 4" is no longer moving forward, but if you think Saldaña's comments indicate that Paramount won't be recasting the part of Chekov, you're probably right. In a 2016 interview with Postmedia Network , shortly after Yelchin's death, producer J.J. Abrams explained, "I would say there's no replacing him. There's no recasting. I can't possibly imagine that, and I think Anton deserves better."

Granted, emotions were high when Abrams said they wouldn't replace Yelchin. However, there's been no indication in the years since the actor's death that a new Chekov will show up on the bridge of the Enterprise.

Who is directing Star Trek 4?

Perhaps the main reason that "Star Trek 4" hasn't happened yet is that Paramount Pictures is having a difficult time finding a director. For a moment, it looked like Quentin Tarantino was going to boldly go where he'd never gone before. J.J. Abrams was super excited about Tarantino's time-traveling concept of sending Kirk and co.  to a world of 1930s gangsters, similar to the classic "Trek" episode "A Piece of the Action." Screenwriter Mark L. Smith of "The Revenant" fame was set to pen the script, but sadly for Trekkies who wanted to see Spock quoting Ezekiel 25:17, Tarantino's vision never came to pass.

Then, it looked like S.J. Clarkson was going to make history as the first woman to helm a "Star Trek" movie. But after Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth left the project in 2018, the movie was subsequently shelved. Noah Hawley of "Fargo" fame was also working on a "Star Trek" movie — one that would've been about a brand new group of heroes — but Paramount eventually stepped in and shut things down because it wouldn't have featured the famous Enterprise crew.

The closest that "Star Trek 4" has come to happening was when Matt Shakman took the captain's seat. After he directed the entirety of the smash hit MCU series "WandaVision," the world was Shakman's oyster, and he intended to shepherd the newest entry in the "Star Trek" universe to theater screens. However, Marvel Studios was keen on working with Shakman again, and after director Jon Watts decided to step away from 2025's "Fantastic Four," the folks at Marvel asked Shakman to come back to the MCU — which he did. As a result, at the moment, "Star Trek 4" is floating through space without a captain.

Where to watch the previous Star Trek movies

While we all wait for news about "Star Trek 4," it might be a good time to go back and revisit previous installments in the "Star Trek" reboot series. If you want to watch the film that started it all and introduced us to new versions of Kirk, Spock, Uhura, and the rest of the Enterprise crew, you can stream 2009's "Star Trek" on Paramount+ . You can also rent it for $3.99 on Google Play ,  Amazon Prime Video , Apple iTunes , Vudu , and YouTube .

If you're ready for the 2013 sequel where Benedict Cumberbatch definitely doesn't play Khan Noonien Singh, you can stream "Star Trek Into Darkness" on Paramount+ . You can also rent it for $3.99 on Google Play , Apple iTunes , Vudu , and YouTube . Amazon Prime Video offers it for $4.29. If you're looking for the third film, where our heroes learn the true power of the Beastie Boys, you can stream "Star Trek Beyond" on Paramount+ . You can also rent it for $2.69 on Google Play and $3.99 on Amazon Video , Apple iTunes , Vudu , and YouTube .

“finally”: severance season 2 release timeline addressed by adam scott after filming delays.

Adam Scott provides an update on Severance season 2 and teases when the hit Apple TV Plus mystery series will be returning to the small screen.

Severance Season 2's "Twists & Turns" Teased, One Character Return Confirmed By John Turturro

  • Adam Scott hints that Severance season 2's release date may not be too far off.
  • After a critically acclaimed and popular season 1, Apple renewed the series for season 2, but filming experienced many delays.
  • The season 1 finale ended on a major cliffhanger with innie Mark discovering that Ms. Casey is his outie's wife, whom he believes to be dead.

Severance star Adam Scott shares a promising new update on the release timeline for the highly-anticipated season 2. First releasing on Apple TV+ in 2022, creator Dan Erickson's hit mystery series follows Adam Scott's Mark as he falls down a dark rabbit hole of secrets while working at Lumon, a company in which its employees have a surgical separation between their work memories and personal memories. Severance season 2 was confirmed to be in development not long after season 1 was released, and it only just wrapped filming after many months of delays.

In a recent interview with THR, Scott reveals that the wait for Severance season 2 may not actually be that much longer . While the star doesn't provide a firm premiere date, it sounds like, with filming now complete, the series is well on the way to returning to screens. Check out his comment below:

I read that filming just wrapped on Severance ‘s highly anticipated second season. What can you share about it, or how do you think people will react? I wish I could tell you and everybody about what’s coming up because it’s going to be so much fun. I can’t wait for people to see it, but I can’t say a word, but it’ll finally be coming out in the somewhat near future and I can’t wait for everyone to see it. That’s basically it. It was so much fun to make. I and many other Severance fans will be patiently waiting. Well, your patience doesn’t have to hold on too much longer.

Why Severance Season 2 Is Taking So Long: Apple Sci-Fi Show's Delays Explained

Severance season 1 left many questions unanswered, what the season 1 finale means for season 2 of apple's hit mystery show.

One of the many reasons why Severance season 1's reviews were so positive is due to how the series slowly unveils more about what's going on at Lumon Industries. The company remains shrouded in mystery, and the fact that employees essentially exist as two separate beings with distinct memories ("Innies" and "Outies," as the employees refer to their separate selves) only makes it more challenging to solve. The Severance season 1 finale , however, features some big developments that pave the way for more of the mystery to be uncovered.

When season 1 concluded, Mark and the other employees had successfully put a plan into motion to wake up their innie selves outside work hours . Mark's revelation is that Dichen Lachman's character, Ms. Casey, is actually his outie's wife, and that his outie believes her to be dead. Britt Lower's Helly also makes a major discovery, finding out that she is in fact the daughter of Lumon CEO James Eagen, and she is largely responsible for the severance procedure. John Turturro's Irving, on the other hand, finds himself outside of Burt's (Christopher Walken) house.

Other cast members in Severance include Zach Cherry, Tramell Tillman, Patricia Arquette, Jen Tullock, and Michael Chernus. Season 2 has added new characters played by Gwendoline Christie, Alia Shawkat, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, and Merritt Wever.

Since each of these Severance characters, particularly Mark and Helly, made such big discoveries, their goals will likely be very different in season 2 . Mark, for example, will clearly be striving to learn more about Ms. Casey and why someone whom his outie believes to be dead is actually alive and well at Lumon. Lumon, meanwhile, is sure to be directing efforts to contain what was a fairly major security breach. Many questions remain about Severance season 2, but it sounds like it's not far off.

Severance Season 2 Delay Explained

Can severance recover from negative press.

Throughout its first season in early 2022, Severance amassed a great deal of acclaim and became one of Apple TV+'s most prominent shows . It eventually earned 14 Emmy nominations, including one for Outstanding Drama Series. Season 2 was announced a few weeks after the season 1 finale, and it seemed likely that Apple TV+ would wish to expedite production somehow. The service, while gradually increasing its prominence in the streaming sphere, needs more buzz-worthy hits to increase its subscriber base, and Severance is well-positioned to grow with season 2.

Severance won 2 Emmys for Outstanding Main Title Design and Outstanding Music Composition for a Series.

However, the show is instead facing a narrative of hectic behind the scenes issues. Beyond the fact that Severance was one of the projects impacted by the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, thus halting work on scripts and production for much of the past year, there were also reports of strong creative differences among the producers . Reportedly, co-showrunners Dan Erickson and Mark Friedman fought during season 1, to the point where Freidman had to be convinced to return for season 2. There were further delays with the scripts, and struggles with keeping Severance on budget.

Severance is far from the first show to be faced with behind the scenes difficulties. Most recently, HBO's Euphoria has faced delays for season 3 , and that comes on top of previous reports about a poor working environment. Despite the fact that the wait for Severance season 2 has gone on for longer than anyone expected, this hopefully should not impact the quality of the upcoming episodes.

Another perspective here is that, in taking longer to get the episodes together, the creative team is ensuring Severance will be the best it can be when it returns. Based on Scott's comments, the wait shouldn't go on for much longer. Filming officially wrapped at the end of April, so when factoring in post-production, the show could return by the end of 2024. This might seem far off, but since several other prominent shows have been pushed to 2025, Severance 's prospects are certainly looking up.
