oasis tour dates 1994

The fortunes of Oasis' first tour venues, 30 years on

E xactly 30 years ago, a little-known band called Oasis set out on their first headline tour, playing to small crowds in tiny venues. Many of those venues say they're now struggling and it's harder for new bands to take the same path today.

When Mark Davyd was asked to book a gig by a rising Scottish band called Whiteout at his venue in Kent in March 1994, he wasn't keen when he found out that an unfamiliar Mancunian group would also be on the bill.

"Whiteout were, at that time, much more the hotly tipped act," Davyd recalls.

He wanted to put on a local support act instead - but the agent stressed it was a joint headline tour.

"We eventually begrudgingly agreed that Oasis would be a joint headline. But I insisted that they must go on first."

So Oasis played the Tunbridge Wells Forum - a 250-capacity converted toilet block - on the third date of their first proper tour.

"It wasn't sold out, but it wasn't empty by a long chalk," Davyd says.

The Gallagher brothers exceeded his expectations. "They were good. But I genuinely can't honestly tell you that the reaction in the room on the night was, 'Wow, that's the future of rock 'n' roll.'."

It turned out Oasis were the next big thing - and went from playing Tunbridge Wells to headlining Glastonbury the following year, and making history at Knebworth the year after that.

For those early venues, it has become increasingly difficult to make ends meet three decades later, Davyd says.

"On that night 30 years ago, that show - with the door take and the bar - probably made a little bit of money.

"You could not afford to put on a similar show now featuring two new bands. You will definitely lose money. Even if you sold all 250 tickets, you'd lose money."

Ticket prices and bar takings haven't kept pace with rising fees, bills, rent and wages, he explains.

"It's been getting worse every year and the final nail in this coffin was the extraordinary increase in energy bills, services and supplies, and rent particularly," Davyd says.

Davyd set up the Music Venue Trust (MVT) 10 years ago to champion the cause of the grassroots circuit, and will be among the industry figures giving evidence about the health of the scene to a parliamentary committee on Tuesday.

The MVT's latest annual report said almost 150 members either shut or stopped staging live music in 2023, while 34 new venues joined.

The first Oasis tour kicked off on 23 March 1994 at Bedford's Angel pub, which was demolished several years later.

Of the 15 venues on the original tour poster, nine have closed or stopped hosting gigs over the years.

The surviving venues include Southampton Joiners, where the Gallagher brothers' rivalry was already rearing its head, according to a story passed down to current boss Ricky Bates.

"About 15 minutes in, Liam and Noel started having a bickering fight on stage. They ended up playing about a half an hour, and then I think Noel or Liam stormed off. I'm not sure which."

Running a venue is "totally different now", and has got tougher even since the Covid pandemic, Bates says.

Along with rising costs, fewer bands are touring - especially since Brexit, which has meant higher costs and red tape for international acts, he says. Those that do go on tour often aren't on the road for as long and only visit the biggest cities.

'On the breadline'

Also, the cost of living crisis means fewer people are going to gigs, and those that do spend less at the bar.

There have been other culture shifts too, he says.

Young people go out less, guitar bands have gone out of fashion, and many up-and-coming artists make their names on TikTok rather than the live circuit.

"There are a lot of factors," Bates says. "We've always been on the brink of closure, as a lot of venues are across the country. A lot of venues run pay check to pay check."

Several years ago, the Joiners started promoting gigs in bigger venues in Southampton, and that revenue has been a lifeline.

"If we weren't doing that, I imagine the Joiners would have closed in 2015 or 2016.

"It lives on the breadline, and just when you think, if we don't get a big show in the next couple of weeks we're going to close down, something mysteriously appears.

"And then that one show tides us over again for another couple of weeks. Every day is a flip flop of a situation."

The night after playing Southampton, Oasis moved on to Bristol. Next Saturday, on the 30th anniversary of that show, tribute band Oas-is will perform at the same venue.

In fact, fans can relive the original gig regularly - Oas-is play at the Fleece seven times a year.

"They always sell out. Always," Fleece owner Chris Sharp says. "And the bar [money] is great. You're taking £5,000 or £6,000 on the bar. That's our buffer. That's what keeps us afloat."

When Sharp bought the long-running venue in 2010, he initially didn't want to book any tribute bands. But he soon realised they sell more tickets than new groups, and fans buy more beer.

Tours 'drying up'

So now, tribute bands and club nights take place on Fridays and Saturdays, subsidising the tours and new artists that play during the rest of the week.

"It took quite a while to work it out, but now we've got a safe formula that works," Sharp says. "We're not struggling as much as others."

However, he too is concerned by the decline in bands passing through. "We had three tours in February," Sharp says. "We had 11 the year before.

"The last week of March we're full, but it's taken until the end of March for it to pick up. So it feels like things are starting later and finishing earlier in terms of the window of when it gets busy."

The next stop on Oasis' 1994 tour was down the road at Bath Moles. However, that became the latest venue to shut in December .

It said the cost of living crisis had "crippled" the grassroots circuit, with its costs going up and footfall down.

While it may be too late for Moles, the venue's closing statement called for big arenas and promoters to put a portion of their earnings back into the small clubs and pubs where many stars start out.

That is a key demand of the MVT and is also backed by members like Hull's New Adelphi, which boasts of hosting early gigs by 11 future Glastonbury headliners - including Oasis in 1994.

Its manager Paul Sarel points to a similar grassroots subsidy in the football pyramid, and says major gig operators will benefit if more small venues survive.

"If there are less grassroots venues, then less bands are probably going to make it big," Sarel says.

"Imagine not having any grassroots football teams and then expecting the next Ronaldo to just make his way to the top by himself. Or the next genius professor to come through without having any schools.

"Not only do we provide a lot of bands that become Glastonbury headliners, it's all the young people who go on to become sound engineers at festivals or big arenas.

"Nobody starts at the top. Everybody does come through a grassroots venue. And we want to always support the new and the original."

The industry is currently "unpredictable", he says - although he hasn't noticed a drop-off in bands wanting to play. More than 700 artists performed in 250 shows at the 180-capacity venue last year, he says.

"They might not all be brilliant, but they're developing, a lot of them. So there's still bands there. A lot of them are doing it DIY without the aid of management, labels, agents."

One show coming up features four new bands put on by a young promoter, who is also learning the trade.

"There'll be 90 people in here for a gig next week hosted by young people at £3 on the door, which is incredible isn't it, in 2024? £3 to see four bands. Wow. We encourage that. It will be amazing."

One of them could be the future of rock 'n' roll - even if the people who watch them might not realise it at the time.

Oasis: Liam Gallagher announces 30th anniversary Definitely Maybe tour

Live performances of eight-times platinum Britpop album will be accompanied by other songs from the same era by the band

Liam Gallagher has announced that he will tour Oasis’s 1994 debut album, Definitely Maybe, in full for its 30th anniversary.

“I’m bouncing around the house to announce the Definitely Maybe tour,” Gallagher said. “The most important album of the 90s bar none. I wouldn’t be anywhere without it and neither would you, so let’s celebrate together.”

The tour will include fan favourites released while Oasis were touring Definitely Maybe, such as Whatever, Fade Away, Listen Up and Sad Song.

The tour begins in Sheffield on 2 June 2024 and concludes on 27 June – the day before Glastonbury kicks off.

Gallagher is likely to be joined by co-founding Oasis member Paul Arthurs (AKA Bonehead), who resumed touring with him earlier this year after a bout with tonsil cancer. In September 2022, he said that he had received the all-clear from doctors and was in recovery.

It is not quite the Oasis reunion that fans have been waiting 14 years for, since brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher split the band and became estranged in 2009.

The pair once vehemently denied rumours that they would reunite – not to mention declining lucrative offers to tour – but in recent years have humoured fans with the idea.

In August, Noel was asked at a live Q&A who would be in the Oasis lineup were they to reunite.

“So me, Liam. Well, it’s a funny thing because we’re all at a certain age now. Hair was a thing in Oasis, so we’ll have to see what everybody’s hair is looking like. I’m in no matter what. This is not fucking going anywhere. I don’t know. Look. Me, Liam and a load of fucking fit birds.”

Definitely Maybe , released on Creation Records in August 1994, is a landmark record in British music and helped define the Britpop era. It reached No 1 on release, becoming what was then the fastest-selling debut album in British music history, and was later certified eight times platinum.

It was a surprise success in some ways after a highly fraught creation, with difficult sessions at various recording studios.

In a review of the 2014 reissue of the album, Rolling Stone critic Rob Sheffield wrote: “Twenty years on, Oasis’ debut album remains one of the most gloriously loutish odes to cigarettes, alcohol, and dumb guitar solos that the British Isles have ever coughed up.”

Liam frequently performs songs from the album – and from Oasis’s catalogue – at his solo shows. His last solo album was 2022’s C’mon You Know . This year, Noel released Council Skies with his High Flying Birds band.

Tickets for the Definitely Maybe anniversary tour go on sale at 9am BST on 20 October.

Oasis defined a generation. Oasis have undoubtably been one of the single biggest influences on my life. They influence the way I walk, talk, dress, the other bands I listen to, the mates I hang around with and the misspent nights/weekends I've lost!

Seeing Oasis live was always an event (usually a big stadium or arena show due to their popularity). Its something you'd look forward to for weeks/months well basically since you first managed to secure your ticket.

The gigs themselves, I honestly find it hard to put into words a description that does this justice. From the moment they stepped on stage how could anyone fail to be transfixed by the greatest frontman in the world ever LIam Gallagher. The sheer euphoria of thousands of people singing every word of various anthems back at the band with as much passion, if not more as you'd find most of the same audience singing to their football teams on a Saturday afternoon.

Oasis were us and we were Oasis, a working class band with a laddish working class following. That may be sneered at by sections of the media (the term 'lad-rock' was banded about) but when your standing in a field/stadium/arena with thousands of like minded individuals watching Oasis the world pretty much starts and ends there.

Liam Gallagher has shared details of a tour to celebrate 30 years of Oasis ‘ seminal album ‘Definitely Maybe’. Check out full dates and ticket details below.

Fans have been awaiting news of the shows since Gallagher confirmed earlier this year that he was looking to play their 1994 debut album in full . He’s been repeatedly teasing it since, including his recent reveal that he’d be playing “naughty” B-sides from the era too and ‘Half The World Away’ sung by brother, former bandmate and Oasis chief songwriter Noel .

Now, Liam has shared full details of the 12-date ‘Definitely Maybe 30 Years’ UK and Ireland tour, which kicks off in Sheffield on June 2 before taking in a night in Cardiff, three in London, three in his native Manchester, two in Glasgow and two in Dublin.

“I’m bouncing around the house to announce the ‘Definitely Maybe’ Tour,” said Gallagher. “The most important album of the ‘90s bar none. I wouldn’t be anywhere without it and neither would you, so let’s celebrate together LG x”

A press release also promises other “fan favourites that could be performed from the other songs that were released during the ‘Definitely Maybe’ era”, potentially including ‘Whatever’, ‘Fade Away’, ‘Listen Up’ and ‘Sad Song’. Recent Instagram posts from Liam featuring former Oasis guitarist Bonehead suggest that she shall be joining him on the tour, having previously played on solo jaunts before his cancer scare took him from the road. The guitarist has since been given the all-clear .

Full dates to the ‘Definitely Maybe 30 Years’ UK and Ireland tour are below, with tickets on sale from 9am BST this Friday (October 20) and available here .

The 2024 ‘Definitely, Maybe’ tour will see Liam take on the LP in a solo capacity, with Noel vocal that  an Oasis reunion will not happening any time soon. However, Noel did confirm a 30th anniversary reissue of the seminal album .

Liam, meanwhile, recently hinted that his new solo album was finished . The singer-songwriter’s most recent studio album came in 2022 with his third LP ‘C’mon You Know’ .

Gallagher also recently released a live album from his show at Knebworth in 2022 . The gig marked one of his biggest headline shows to date as a solo artist, performing in front of more than 170,000 people over two nights.

While speaking to  NME as part of the In Conversation series, Noel was asked if Oasis had ever been made any offers for a Britpop reunion package tour with other bands, to which he said that “inevitably, it will happen”, but that “there’s never really been a serious offer about ‘The Big O’ getting back together, but there you go”.

November will see Oasis reissue their B-sides collection ‘The Masterplan ‘ to mark its 25th anniversary.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
