Welcome to Örebro

Örebro in the heart of sweden.

The name means "bridge over the gravel banks" and the city was founded as early as the 13th century where the main route through Central Sweden crossed the river Svartån. The oldest parts of the castle and St. Nicolai Church are of the same age as the city. The center is characterized by the castle and many beautiful buildings. Together, they create a city center that many consider one of the most beautiful in the country.

A city center that many consider one of the most beautiful in the country.

Örebro - between Stockholm and Gothenburg

The geographical location has always been one of Örebro's great advantages. Stockholm is two hours away and to Gothenburg it is only a little over three hours journey. It is four hours to Norway's capital Oslo and half of Sweden's population lives within a twenty mile radius of the city.

In all times, Örebro has been a place for merchants, craftsmen and small businesses. The tradition lives on in our time. The large companies are few, an exception is Epiroc, which manufactures mine drills. The city is dominated by public services such as the government agency Statistics Sweden and different service companies, not least in the IT sector. Örebro is one of Sweden's university cities and there is also a university hospital here.

Close to nature

Nature is always close by. The vast nature area of Kilsbergen rises to the west, the forests of Bergslagen spread out to the north and the wilderness of Tiveden lies in the south. There are two national parks ( Tiveden and Garphyttan ) close by and two of Sweden's largest lakes, Hjälmaren and Vättern. For those who want to experience beautiful small towns, there are several options within an hour's drive. Nora , Arboga and Askersund are three typically Swedish wooden towns, made to stroll around.

International names from Örebro

Some international greats are connected to the Örebro area. In Karlskoga you can visit Alfred Nobel's last home at Björkborn's manor . It was here that the will that formed the basis for the Nobel Prize was read out for the first time. A completely different type of world celebrity is Formula 1 driver Ronnie Peterson from Örebro. He had an accident in 1978 and is buried in Almby cemetery. Not far away you can see the statue erected to honor him. Two of the musicians who contributed to ABBA's classical sound, guitarist Lasse Wellander and drummer Ola Brunkert, also came from Örebro. Prince Daniel, who is married to Sweden's Crown Princess Victoria, is born in Örebro.

Örebro – where history and contemporary culture converge

Örebro is a manageably-sized city with diverse activities and sights to take in, along with natural beauty spanning land and water.

  • Örebro’s water tower ‘Svampen’ (The Mushroom) is the city’s most famous modern building – and one that has inspired a Saudi Arabian replica.
  • Örebro’s most popular selfie spot is the popcorn cluster sculpture by artist Anton Hjärtmyr.
  • Tiveden National Park is known as Sweden’s southernmost wilderness, within which bandits and – according to folklore – trolls and a host of other mythical creatures once lived.

Örebro, conveniently located between Stockholm and Gothenburg, strikes the perfect balance between intriguing history and contemporary appeal. Centuries back, it was a hub for transport and trade. During the second half of the 19th century, it emerged as a shoe manufacturing centre. In modern times, Sweden’s sixth largest city has also bred its fair share of celebrities – Nina Persson, lead singer of the world-renowned band The Cardigans hails from these shores and so too Prince Daniel, the husband of Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden.

Örebro’s cultural highlights

Steeped in history, Örebro is a fascinating city to wander around, and Örebro Castle is its crowning glory. The castle probably started its days in the 14th century, as a stronghold with a prison, before morphing into a palace during the reign of King Gustav Vasa. Today, the palace offers activities of all kinds – ghost walks, treasure hunts, and guided tours to mention but a few. Don’t miss the onsite museum and its fascinating exhibits charting the centuries-long story of the castle and its long line of former residents: from witches and prisoners to royalty.

The old town of Wadköping is a village within the city. The main street is lined on one side by red wooden houses from the 17th through 19th centuries, moved here from other parts of the city. Across from them, you’ll get a glimpse of how the town looked after the fire of 1854. This picturesque district is filled with museums, cafes, artisan workshops and exhibitions, all highlighting the rich history of Örebro, bringing the past to life.

As for contemporary culture, Örebro Konsthall – or ÖBKHL as it’s popularly called – is a definite draw. Its strong line-up of exhibitions focuses on international and Swedish artists.

Open Art – a contemporary art biennale – transforms Örebro into an outdoor gallery, with sculptures, installations and textile art dotting the urban landscape. Some of the works from previous editions have stayed put – such as the famous popcorn cluster by Örebro-born artist Anton Hjärtmyr.

Hike, bike and SUP your way through Örebro’s spectacular nature

Örebro is surrounded by natural beauty in various forms – from enchanted forests to its stunning botanical garden. Lake Hjälmaren, Sweden’s fourth largest lake, is located some 45 minutes by car from Örebro. Head here for a wealth of experiences including boating, fishing, swimming and SUP excursions.

Tiveden National Park – known as Sweden’s southernmost wilderness – covers some 2,000 hectares, stretching across hilly terrain interspersed with rift valleys and enormous boulders. Take in the views from Trollkyrkobergen mountains and bring swimwear as you’ll no doubt be tempted to take a dip at Vitsand beach.

Tiveden is a hiker’s paradise with 34 kilometres of marked trails winding their way through this beautiful national park. Choose the option that’s right for you – trails range from 1 kilometre to 9.5 kilometres in length.

Bergslagsleden is another must for hikers and bikers. Measuring 280 kilometres – starting at Kloten and ending at Tiveden – this 17-section trail runs through Örebro region, leading you to many of its beauty spots and points of cultural interest, including old ruins and mining areas. Botany enthusiasts can look out for as many as twelve species of orchid, many of which thrive in the disused mine Lejagruvan, nestled within Lejakärret nature reserve.

Örebro’s gastronomy and best dining experiences

Örebro and its surroundings are awash with quality restaurants. Restaurant MULL – run by eco-farm Jannelunds Gård outside Örebro – is a farm-to-table affair serving up seasonal produce picked onsite and cooked with a high level of creativity – think miso-glazed broccoli with blueberry sorbet to follow. The restaurant is one of many excellent sustainable recommendations in the online dining guide Plant Based by Sweden .

Matbaren Gro is another quality option if you’re keen on vegetarian and vegan cuisine such as onion soup and dumplings filled with forest mushroom.

Restaurant Skybar Svampen is one of central Örebro’s favourite dining spots. You’ll be tucking into your meal at the top of this iconic mushroom-shaped building, offering panoramic views. Don’t miss their delicious mushroom soup!

Saluhallen – Örebro’s market hall – is brimming with delicacies offered by a range of individual businesses, with focus on anything from gourmet burgers to fresh fish and locally sourced vegetables. A diverse affair, it mirrors the very identity of the city itself.

All the Best Things to Do in Örebro, Sweden

orebro visit sweden

Looking for some fun things to do in Örebro, a charming town in Sweden? Check out this little introductory guide!

Remember my friend, Kayley, from one of my trips to Busan ? Well, shortly after I saw her and her husband, Mark that May, she landed a teaching job in Sweden ! They’ve both since moved to the very cute city of Örebro, which is about two hours from Stockholm.

Örebro is a city in the Närke province and considered the sixth largest in Sweden. It surrounds the Svartån River and has been established since at least before the Middle Ages where it was a major town for commerce and trade.

When I was booking my flights to Norway , I realized something quite obvious. Norway and Sweden are neighbors! I messaged Kayley to see where they were living and how feasible it would be to come visit, and she told me it was an easy bus ride from Oslo.

Turns out it is, and I even got my bus from the airport, so I didn’t have to drag my luggage through an icy Oslo at night to find a terminal or station!

orebro visit sweden

Anyway, I spent a little under a week hanging out with Kayley and Mark and getting to know the town they’ve called home for almost two years (three now). All these tips are, of course, from them! They gave me a bunch of little things to do and see while they were, you know, at work, and Kayley lent me her bike to use. Enjoy this guide, and I hope you think about adding Örebro to your Sweden itinerary!

Örebro Travel Tips

Where to stay in örebro.

Now, obviously you guys can’t crash with Kayley and Mark like I did! When you’re figuring out where to stay, I’d recommend staying relatively close to the city center so you can sightsee more easily. The best of the hotel options I found was Hotel Borgen . Airbnb-wise, this super chic apartment is a stone’s throw from Örebro Castle while this 3-room apartment might be better for slightly bigger groups.

How to Get to Örebro

The closest airport for you is probably the Stockholm Airport, which is about 2 hours away. You can get the train or a bus from here.

I left Örebro by train, and it was super easy. There are two stations: Örebro Central and Södra Station. I came in at central and left via Södra since it was closer and I could walk.

Check flixbus for tickets and times getting to or leaving Örebro by bus. I took a bus from Oslo Airport to Örebro overnight, and it was super easy.

Another spot to get your fika on! (I’m pretty sure that’s not a real phrase or the proper way to use fika in a sentence, but here we are).

orebro visit sweden

How to Get Around Örebro

Your best bet is to rent a bike, rent a scooter, or walk! Walking is fine, but some of the distances are just a bit long. Mark and Kayley had an extra bike I got around on. I’m not sure about renting a bike here but you can rent a scooter via Voi .

Sightseeing Things to Do in Örebro

orebro visit sweden

1. Bike or walk along the river

Biking is the main mode of transportation in Örebro, so it makes sense that their main river, Svartån, has such nice trails all along it. I want to say I went for a walk or run as well, but I also think that was me planning to and not actually following through.

Anyway, Kayley was kind enough to leave one of their bikes for me to use, so I took advantage one sunny day to bike along the river and down to the next spot on this list. Even in winter it was actually really nice, and I actually left my coat behind because I knew it’d be too heavy!

Karlsund, Orebro, Sweden

2. Explore Karlslund Cultural Reserve

One spot to visit that’s a bit out of town (I biked here) is Karlsund Herrgård. It’s sort of a mix between an old manor, a garden, and other random things. During the winter, of course, everything was closed, but you can still walk around the grounds and see the different exhibits or sculptures.

This reserve has undergone a number of different owners, though its name “Karslund” probably comes from Duke Karl, who first built a barn on this land in the 1500s. It wasn’t until the 1800s under the Anckarsvärd brothers that it saw a huge expansion, much of which we can still see today. Seriously, this place has housed just about everything — a gun barrel factory, an airfield, a railway station, and so much more!

You can check here for all the specific buildings, cafes, and workshops. All the times vary, so it’s best to contact them beforehand if you want to do anything at [email protected]. They also offer guided group tours for 1,200 SEK (~$140 USD).

They also have different events throughout the year, like Garden Day, Midsummer celebrations. Mickelsmäss, a Light and Fire Festival, and the Christmas Market. I’d ask about the dates for those if you want to plan your trip to Örebro to coincide.

3. Have a nice fika at one of the cafes!

It didn’t take long for me to take to the tradition of fika, especially with all the Swedish pastries involved! There are so many cozy cafes around Örebro to enjoy this Swedish tradition of a coffee and pastry break. I’ll get into the specific ones I visited below.

orebro visit sweden

4. Join Park Run Örebro

It’s not super common in the US, but in South Africa and Europe, there are a lot of Park Runs! In Örebro, the Park Run is on Saturday at 9:30 AM starting at Oljevägen 15, and it takes you along a really beautiful route. It’s only a 5k, so really easy to keep up with any running goals!

orebro visit sweden

5. Visit during Hindermässan

Lucky for me, right when I visited was during Örebro’s annual Hindersmässan! It’s basically this nice market set up with lots of food stands and little shops all around the main town center. We went to walk around on my first day and to see all the different offerings.

orebro visit sweden

6. Enjoy Örebro Castle

Örebro’s shining landmark: its castle! It kind of sits on its own little islet right in the city center and its history dates back to the 1300s when it was initially built as a fortress. Under Duke Charles, who would later become King Charles IX, during the 1500s, it was turned into a castle instead. Since then it’s undergone different refurbishments and reconstructions to be the castle you see today.

If you’re not visiting during the summer, you’ll have to book a guided tour to actually go into the castle. Since I was there in the dead of winter, I obviously missed doing this so something to do on a future visit!

orebro visit sweden

7. Walk around the main center and take in the architecture

I mean, this goes for pretty much any European city — there are just so many pretty buildings and usually unique sculptures to see if you just head towards the city center and wander around. Örebro was no exception — so many cute alleyways and storefronts. Personally loved that rubber duck made of rubber tires.

orebro visit sweden

8. Go up the Svamp for pretty Örebro views

If you’re looking to get panoramic views of Örebro, then you want to head right over to the Svamp! The Svamp is a water tower for the city but they also recently built an observatory you can go up for free! There are some very pretty views and, of course, you can always dine at the restaurant!

orebro visit sweden

9. Enjoy Wadköping

Wadköping is a cool open air museum showcasing some houses from the 17th-19th centuries, similar to Skansen in Stockholm. While I didn’t really walk around since there’s not much to do during the winter, we all got breakfast nearby after Park Run. During warmer weather, though, you can see different arts and crafts exhibits.

orebro visit sweden

10. See the main churches in Örebro

There are a few churches sprinkled throughout Örebro, but the main one to see (and you really can’t miss) is Sankt Nikolai kyrka (Saint Nicholas Church). I mean, for us, it’s where we parked our bikes when we rode into town! St. Nicholas goes back to the late 1200s and is a mix of Romanesque and Gothic styles.

Where to Eat in Örebro

orebro visit sweden

We ate at Saludhall on my first night after walking around the Hindermässan. It’s this hipster kind of place with lots of different places in one bigger dining hall. It kind of reminded me of the Auction House Market in New Orleans. Of course, we had to try the Korean place there ;)

orebro visit sweden

Lill-Anna’s Butik & Café

Kaylely recommend I visit Lill-Anna’s while she was at work. There are actually a few locations around the city center, including in the castle, but the one I went to was at Vasagatan 13. If I remember correctly I just got a latte and a kanelbullar (cinnamon roll).

orebro visit sweden

Vasa Konditori

After Kayley finished work and met me at Lill-Anna’s, we walked across the street to Vasa Konditori to try even more fika. This time we orded princesstårta, semlor, and punchrulle. My favorite was the princesstårta; the semlor didn’t really taste like much to me.

orebro visit sweden

Pizzeria Express

So one of the evenings Kayley had a prior commitment leaving Mark and I to hang out at their apartment. He ordered this delicious monstrosity of a keab pizza (and a regular cheese one for balance) from Pizzeria Express for us for dinner. I don’t even know how to describe what was on it, but I don’t even think I could eat how you’d normally eat a pizza! However, I do know it was the perfect Friday night dinner while obsessively working on a puzzle!

Max Burgers

Did you know Sweden has its own fast food franchise? It’s called Max Burgers or Max’s, and it was founded way back in 1968 in a tiny area called Gällivare in northern Sweden.

We stopped here to get a late lunch one day, and I have to say the chipotle burger was pretty delicious! If you want a quick meal and still want to feel like you’re eating something Swedish, then why not the Swedish version of McDonald’s (but better)?

orebro visit sweden

Gamla Örebro Café & Konferens

After Park Run, we went to this cute spot near Wädkoping for breakfast. Yummy! While we just got some sweet things for a post-run breakfast, they do offer actual meals and food too.

orebro visit sweden

Fröken Brogrens Veranda

On the day that Kayley had off and we could sightsee together, she took me to Fröken Brogren for a nice, yummy brunch. Not only do they have the most fun name for me to say, they have a really big selection of fika pastries as well as some healthier options, which you can see in the pic above.

And there you have it! All the best things to do in Örebro from my little trip. Anything to add? Let me know!

The lively, youthful and handsome town of ÖREBRO lies on the shores of the country’s fourth largest lake, Hjälmaren, roughly two-thirds of the way between Stockholm and Karlstad and around 110km north of Vadstena. Örebro’s development was dictated by its important strategic position: the main route from southwest Sweden to Stockholm, King Erik’s Way, ran right through the centre, where a build-up of gravel made the river fordable (Örebro means “gravel bridge”). The heart of Örebro comes as a pleasant surprise, its much-fortified thirteenth-century castle forming a magnificent backdrop to the water-lily-studded Svartån River. Aside from the town-centre attractions, there are a couple of fun trips you can make by bike, namely to the Naturens hus nature centre, just east of town on the shores of Hjälmaren, and to Tysslingen lake , a few kilometres west.

Boat trips around Örebro

Drottninggatan.

Given Örebro’s easy access to Lake Hjälmaren just east of the town, you might want to consider taking a boat trip around the lake on M/S Gustav Lagerbjelke , which operates from late June to mid-August. There are several options available but the most popular is the five-hour cruise out into Hjälmaren and through the Hjälmarekanal with its many locks. Transport back to Örebro is by bus and the return ticket costs 320kr. Alternatively, shorter lunch cruises including a dish of salmon with pesto, parmesan and potatoes cost a good-value 270kr. There’s more information at

w lagerbjelke.com .

Another option is to rent your own canoe or kayak and paddle out yourself: both are available from KFUM Örebro Kanotcenter located out of town at Hästhagsvägen ( t 019 26 04 00; 50kr/hr, 200kr/day). Give them a call and they’ll help with pickup and drop-off.

Norrköping’s north–south central artery, Drottninggatan runs ruler-straight from the train station and crosses Motala ström, the small, rushing river that attracted the Dutch industrialist Louis De Geer (1587–1652) to the town in the early seventeenth century. He was known as the father of Swedish industry, and his paper mill, became the biggest factory in town. Many of Norrköping’s buildings, and the trams, are painted in De Geer’s colour of choice – a tortilla-chip yellow – which has become synonymous with the town.

Just a few steps down from the station, compact Carl Johans Park has 25,000 cacti, formally arranged in thematic patterns and interspersed with brilliantly coloured flowers and palm trees. Glance to the right from here (with the train station behind you) across Slottsgatan, and you’ll see the splendid 1906 city theatre , with its Art Nouveau curves and double Ionic columns. Over the river, follow the tram lines up cobbled Drottninggatan and after a few hundred metres turn right into Repslagaregatan for Gamlatorget , overlooked by a charismatic Carl Milles sculpture of Louis De Geer with a bale of cloth slung over his shoulder.

Every odd-numbered year, between mid-June and early September, the city’s pedestrianized centre is transformed into a huge open-air contemporary art exhibition, Open Art ( W openart.se ), as designers and artists display their work. Past displays have included a gigantic upside-down teddy bear made of wood and a floating platform for model ducks and seals on the water below the castle; you name it, anything goes – the aim is to provide an urban forum for thought-provoking modern art.

About Örebro Castle

A cultural heritage, destination and home.

Dating back to the 14th century, Örebro Castle is today a place where Sweden’s royal history meets the present. The stories of celebrities such as Engelbrekt, Gustav Vasa, the ancestor Bernadotte, the cabbie Lasse-Maja and the little ghost Laban, to name but a few, are alive and well – and now it’s your turn to experience them.

But the castle is not only a popular destination. Like many other historic buildings, the castle is managed by the Swedish National Property Board and has been the home of Örebro County’s governor since the 18th century. Today, Örebrokompaniet is responsible for the public parts of the castle and some of the premises also house a number of companies as tenants.

Early History

Early fortification of the castle (14th century).

The exact origin of Orebro Castle is not known, but the castle is believed to have existed since the Medieval Ages as a stone building in the center of the city. The initial structure of the castle is believed to be built around the 13 th century by Jarl Birger , founder of Stockholm. The building started around as a small defensive tower by the Svartan River.

The early fortification and expansion of the castle started around the mid-14 th century by King Magnus Eriksson, who converted the small castle structure into a three-story residential stronghold. The renovated structure was titled “Örebrohus”. However, the castle was soon captured by Albert of Mecklenburg in the late 14 th century. By the late sixteenth century, the castle had survived nine different sieges because of its geostrategic position, until it came under the ownership of Gustav Vasa in 1529.

Conversion of the castle to Duke’s residence (17th century)

When Gustav Vasa got hold of the castle, a major portion of the original castle had been damaged. However, no attempts were made by Gustav Vasa for restoring the castle. Upon his death, Örebrohus was inherited by his son Duke Charles who extensively worked on the reconstruction of the castle starting in 1625. Magnificant drawbridges in addition to curtain walls were added to the castle’s tower. However, lacking the proper care and neglected, the castle fell to ruins by the end of the 17 th century.

Classical Addition to Castle’s Structure (18th century)

Another major milestone in the history of Orebro Castle was during the latter half of the 18 th century. The castle was transformed into a Classical-styled building with flat roofs, terraces, and exclusive residential apartments. The curtain wall was demolished, and strong bridges were constructed instead. During this time period, the dungeons of the castle also served as a prison and a warehouse.
