14 Things to Know Before Traveling to Colombia (Plus Video)

We are Dorene and Troy, an Ex-Marketing Executive and TV Editor couple from Canada. We’re redefining our mid-life by lifestyle redesign and full-time transformative travel. We help people who feel stuck and uninspired to make meaningful, conscious change in their life, work and travel at Travel Life Experiences . We were lucky to spend a few days with Jedd and Michelle in Medellín this year, and share some of what we love about this country.

We’ve fallen in love with Colombia. After living and traveling in this country for several months the last two years, we can’t help but share with you what we’ve seen here in this video.

And this video was made later by Jedd and Michelle with some of our Colombian friends:

We would do Colombia a disservice if we didn’t share what we learned about traveling in Colombia. There are many misconceptions about this country and here are some tips to get you prepared for your travels.

Our Top Tips and Insights to make your travel experience more meaningful:

1. it’s colombia, not columbia.

The name of this country is spelled incorrectly all the time. It’s a major pet peeve for Colombians. I recently explained to a Colombian friend that we have a province in Canada called British Columbia and a very large travel brand in the United States that is called Columbia, so it was no wonder there was some confusion, but it was explained to me as getting your own first name spelled wrong every time. To alleviate this error, there is a brand called “It’s Colombia, not Columbia” dedicated to communicating this spelling error. It’s no wonder why it’s a favorite brand, and a subtle nudge to correct any guest that doesn’t know the difference.

2. Colombians are some of the friendliest, most welcoming to visitors to their country.

We can definitely say the Colombians are hands down some of the happiest, warm and welcoming people we have met in our 20 years of travel, and this is consistent across the country. It’s partly cultural and their approach living, and for many years they claimed top country for the happiest people in the world report, even though they lived through over 50+ years of war. During your visit, it won’t take long to be greeted with warm smiles and salutations when you visit and be prepared for a greeting from total strangers walking down the street. This is one of the many things to appreciate about Colombians.

passion travel colombia

3. Stop reinforcing perceptions of Pablo Escobar, Cocaine, and Violence. There are so many positive aspects to Colombia.

Television shows like ‘Narcos’ might be your kind of entertainment, but they reinforce the dark past instead of the good about Colombia. Colombians want to move away from these perceptions and move toward transformation, optimism, and peace. In fact, the signing of the historic peace treaty in November 2016, is a clear indicator that peace is its priority. Colombians will be quick to inform you of the many good parts of their country such as its biodiversity, national parks, ocean coastlines, festivals, music, and art.

4. Colombia is safe to travel, even despite the significant police presence.

There is a significant police presence throughout Colombia, usually at every mall, major attraction, recreation centers, parks, Metro and bus stations. It may seem rather confronting at first but they are present to avoid issues not because there are issues. There is over 1 million military in Colombia and many police officers in the country; it’s no wonder given what Colombia has gone through the last 52 years. Our views of new reports in the 90’s will definitely paint a bleak view of crime in Colombia, but it has changed, and there is evidence of this wherever you go. Like any country, it is important to know where you should go and where you shouldn’t. We’ve spent considerable time in this country the last 3 years and we have not faced any issues. However, like any country, taking regular precautions is wise, its an unfamiliar country and safe keeping your valuables and walking with someone at night are wise steps to follow anywhere.

Police presence is everywhere

5. Colombians are helpful and forgiving when it comes to practicing the Spanish language.

Colombians are very patient and forgiving when travelers attempt Spanish, and better yet, they are more than willing to help. And at times, they downright go out of their way to assist you if you need help with communication. I’ve had numerous interactions, where a person walking nearby drops into my conversation to help me out with my Spanish, and they are very open to talking slower if you ask. Colombia is one country that takes the intimidation out of learning Spanish.

6. Colombia’s climate can be very different wherever you travel.

Be prepared to experience any kind of weather if you plan to travel throughout Colombia. From the high altitude cooler climate in the mountains of Bogotá, extreme heat in Cartagena and Santa Marta, to spring-like temperatures in Medellín and Bucaramanga. During our first visit here, we didn’t plan for the cool nights in Bogotá, nor the frequent rains in May, so be prepared to dress in layers.

7. Understanding the Currency and Credit Cards

Cash is king in Colombia even in large chain retailers and rarely is USD accepted. The denominations of the Colombian Peso (COP) is in thousands or “mil” in Spanish. Notes come in 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000 and 50,000, with coins in 50, 100, 200, 500, or 1,000. Often, the ‘000’s are dropped in verbal communication and referred to as “5 mil” for 5000 COP$. It is confusing at first, but it does allow for practice in large numbers in Spanish. ATMs are widely available where ever you go. Credit cards are not widely used, and they may charge you the 5% credit card fee. During a transaction, you may be asked, “ Cuantos cuotas?” This inquiry is asking if you want to pay in installments. For one standard payment, as you would pay back home, and you would indicate one cuota.

8. How Tipping works in Colombia

Tipping is customary in Colombia and it is definitely appreciated. At the end of your service, you will be asked if you want “ propina voluntaria or servicio” , which is if you want to leave off a tip or include a 10% tip on the bill. Please consider tipping in Colombia for all services (Taxis are exempt) they are greatly appreciated and the hourly wage here is very low. There is also a unique phenomenon here known as reverse tipping or the “ ñapa” or bonus. Sometimes you get a little extra of something at no charge especially if you are a regular customer. For example, if you are at a juice bar, and there is still juice left in the blender, often you will get the rest of the juice. What a pleasant surprise to get a bonus!

9. Colombian food is not on any list of top international cuisine, but you might be surprised and delighted by it.

Colombian food can best be described in western terms as comfort food: hearty, filling and rich. We highly recommend going on a food tour, like this one , or getting a local to introduce you to the popular dishes. There are a lot of fried fast foods, but there are also excellent meals. Notable foods we loved in Colombia were Ajiaco, Sancocho, Empanadas, Patacones, Arepas con Huevo and the delicious Limonada de Coco beverage. The cuisine is worth some exploration.

10. Fruit is the passion of the country, and you will understand why.

Fruit is an essential part of the diet here, and you must visit the fresh fruit markets and small shops to get the best price and supply. Juices are the staple drink for meals and also readily available is the “ salpicón’’ the perfect marriage between a fruit salad and a smoothie. Many of the fruits are not found in other countries. Our particular favorites were Guanábana, Lulo, La uchuva, Granadillas, Maracuyá (Passion Fruit), Tomate de árbol (Tree tomato), and Pitahayas (Dragon fruit). The quality of the fruit is incredible including the sweet Pineapple and Papaya, which melts in your mouth. It is the gold standard for fruit especially for us North Americans who don’t get fresh tropical fruits in our own backyard.

Colombia’s abundant fruit markets, this one is Minorista Market in Medellín.

11. Colombia is not easy for vegetarians.

Fried pork, fried chicken, and arepas are mainstays often served with every meal. Although there are vegetarian restaurants in larger centers, it’s hard to get past the quantity and price of Colombian high carb and meat dishes and snacks. There are options like rice, beans, vegetables (best to source in markets) and, of course, fruits. Often, if you mention that you are a vegetarian, they will assume that chicken or fish is acceptable for you. Just be prepared as you will need to make some modifications to your meal. In bigger cities like Bogotá, Cartagena , and Medellín, international cuisine is growing, and there are a variety of vegetarian restaurants and international options.

12. Don’t slam the car door!

When you get into a cab, you will notice how light and thin the doors are, so taxi drivers will often warn you not to slam the door, and get very upset if you do. Foreigners have a reputation of slamming car doors in this country; perhaps it is because we are used to large, sturdy and heavy doors on our own vehicles that require a forceful push. Watch if you notice this action!

13. There are lots of options for reasonably priced transit.

Take advantage of transit when you come to Colombia it is affordable, decent and in our view, the best way to see a city and the rest of the country. Often, there are no posted schedules, so you do have to ask. Be prepared to keep bills smaller than 10,000 pesos so you can get the correct change. The Medellín Metro (trains and cable cars) are the best in the country, and you can even download the schedule app. Bogotá has an extensive bus system, with their service called TransMilenio . Although rush hour is a nightmare there, plan your trip accordingly. Cabs are very reasonably priced in all cities, and they are metered to manage a consistent cost for the ride. There are other great taxi apps here, like  Easy Taxi (now Cabify) , to organize your trip. Even Uber is running in all major cities here.

14. Domestic travel is excellent.

Flights across the country are low-cost like discount airlines like VivaColombia , and often Avianca has comparable prices (and they don’t charge for all the incremental discount airline fees like Viva Colombia). Bus transit is still a great option, although travel in the country is slow with long, winding roads through the mountains. The bus system consists of comfortable western-style buses with bathrooms for longer destinations. Be prepared for loud Colombian music playing during your ride, and bring a warm shirt as the A/C may be blasting! We’ve used bus services such as Rapidochoa and ExpresoBrasilia. They are excellent services with detailed schedules on their websites. Please note that in some cases bus and airlines will not take foreign credit cards, so you have to book in person and pay with cash.

Passion Paragliding

Colombia 2025

Say “no” to january blues. say “yes” to tropical xc paradise..

Take off from manicured grassy launches surrounded by coffee and banana plantations.  Milk generous and bountiful thermals to climb high and travel far across tropical landscapes.  Land next to papaya trees and sugar cane plantations, to be welcomed by friendly locals on horseback.

Your two week Colombian Safari is fully supported with two drivers and THREE top guides to help you get the very most from your adventure of a lifetime.

Watch this video to see what it’s all about:

Trip highlights, live and breathe paragliding.

Expect to clock up plenty of airtime here.  Fly XC every day in conditions that are generally smooth and easy.   Two retrieve buses using the latest live-tracking technology means you’ll be back to launch (or the pool) faster than ever.

Exotic Adventure

This is XC flying at its best.  With our XC tours you’ll also get to see plenty of tropical Colombia – staying in 5 different (and good quality!) hotels as we travel through Colombia visiting some absolutely fabulous XC sites.  Bring your camera!

Most reliable flying weather

Very reliable!  In 2024, we missed just one day during the whole season.  All other days were XC days. You can fully expect EVERYDAY to be flyable out here.   It’s the best way to kick-start 2025

Trip Details

Pilot Level This trip is open to autonomous pilots qualified to at least CP level.  Pilots should also have some previous thermalling experience and ideally have been XC before.  Most of the launches we visit (about 8 different ones!) are really ideal – the perfect grassy slope.  Conditions on launch are usually strong enough for reverse launching, but forward launches are also often required.  With Passion you’ll ALWAYS have a guide on launch to help you.

Whilst the launches are some of the most accessible and manicured you’ll find anywhere, landings are often more challenging and not always so big.  If you have any doubt about whether your flying abilities are sufficient, please get in touch.

The aim of this trip is to develop pilot XC skills by scoring as much quality airtime as possible and enhancing that experience with quality air-to-air guiding, group and individual feedback.

Whether you’re after a warm and sunny escape, or looking to break your personal best distance, this is the ideal winter adventure.  In Colombia you can expect to fly day after day (whilst wearing shorts!!)

……………………………………………………………………………………… Pilot Level for BIG XC Our Big XC Trip is reserved for pilots who have already achieved a personal best distance of at least 50km.   If in doubt about your suitability please contact us via email. ……………………………………………………………………………………….

Temperatures and flying conditions Colombia is hot and humid.  Climbing up to base is refreshing and you’ll be flying in shorts and T-shirt (maybe a jacket on high base days).  Temperatures on landing can be very hot and humid.  At most of the sites we visit winds are generally light and valley breezes are not a problem.  The humid air means that thermals are well behaved, easy to understand and not too strong.   It also means that thermals are usually marked by nice fluffy cumuli.  Climb. Fly to fluffy white cloud. Repeat.

The guiding Expect to considerably develop your XC skills on this trip.

No matter what your level we are there to help.  One guide is always last to launch so always there to assist.  We will be flying with you – most probably splitting into smaller groups so you can get the most out of the experience.  This will mean less experienced pilots can expect to get feedback on their thermalling skills whilst more ambitious and experienced pilots will not be hindered from covering bigger distances or more ambitious flights.

As well as full weather and task briefings each morning, we’ll take time at the end of each day to give you feedback to help you improve your flying skills and XC decision making.

It’s all there for you but there’s no pressure.  More than a paragliding course this is a lifetime adventure where flying and having fun in a tropical wonderland is what it’s all about.

Day after day of XC flying

We’ll spend the first few flying days at Piedechinche, an easy XC site and the perfect way to “warm-up”.  We then head downstream to fly sites like Roldanilllo, Ansermanuevo, Apía and in the second week further down-stream to visit sites such as Titiribí, Jericó, Pantanillo, Cordoncillo and La Merced.

Day 15 (Saturday 18th January)

Transfer to Medellin airport (about 45minutes)

Colombia XC Tour 2 (Medellin to Cali )

Day 1 (Sunday 9th February)

Arrival at Medellin airport and transfer to hotel (about 45 minutes)

After a night in Medellin, our first flying day, Sunday will be from the gentle site of Jericó.  Nearby we’ll also explore sites such as Titiribí, Jericó, Pantanillo, Cordoncillo and La Merced.  Our second week focusses on the world renowned flying site of Roldanillo (and nearby sites of Ansermanueveo and Apia)  We finish up with a couple of days flying in the very wonderful Piedechinche.

Day 15 (Sunday 23rd February)

Transfer to Cali airport (about 45minutes)

Non flying adventures

We usually stay very close to launches so with the odd free morning we’ll visit coffee plantations (and a few other secret surprises!)  We use local guides so you get an unparalleled insight into the local culture.

BIG XC Camp (for pilots with Personal Best of at least 50km) (flights to Cali)

Day 1 (Sunday 23rd February)

Arrival at Cali airport and transfer to hotel (c. 45minutes)

We’ll spend a couple of days in Piedechinche to warm up. For the majority of the fortnight we’ll be flying the other big sites of the Cauca valley including Ansermanuevo, Roldanillo and Apia.  On this trip we move around less, and whilst we won’t see so much of Colombia we’ll have more time to debrief flights at the end of each day.  On this trip we’re going big everyday!  We’ll finish up our final day in Piedechinche (having flown there from Roldanillo)

Day 15 (Sunday 9th March)

Transfer to Cali airport (c. 45minutes)

passion travel colombia

Accommodation We use a variety of accommodations along route.  All places we stay are a notch-up from other operators. You’ll even have a pool for all but a couple of days from your trip.

Prices for the fortnight are based on twin rooms (two people sharing) (double rooms for couples).   If you’d prefer a single room for the week, these are sometimes available for a supplement.  Please get in touch early to reserve a single room.

For our Big XC Trip we will be staying in the exclusive Los Vinedos Hotel for 11 nights. !

Food Breakfast is included in the price. We’ll usually pick up flying snacks (lunch) en route to our flying site each morning.  In the evenings we usually organise ourselves to eat at a local restaurant – making everything easy for you!

You will need to bring the following:

  • Passport (with at least 6 months validity)
  • Paragliding insurance ( essential if you want to fly!)  Bring insurance documents with you!!
  • Certified wing
  • Certified harness with fitted and recently re-packed reserve parachute
  • Paragliding helmet
  • Sturdy flying shoes/boots
  • Summer flying gloves
  • Flying clothing  (except on the high base days you might find shorts and T-shirts sufficient)
  • Integrated GPS vario
  • Radio (or get in touch early if you want to rent one)
  • Mobile telephone.  Please bring an “open” phone (smart phone!). We will provide you with an Colombian SIM card on arrival

We also recommend you bring the following:

  • Sunscreen  and sunglasses  – It will hot and sunny !
  • Hat – It will hot and sunny !
  • Summer clothing – Colombia is tropical
  • Warm clothing  – you won’t need much of this and nothing too fluffy, but occasionally we stay quite high in the Andes Mountains, so a fleece or light jacket could be useful.
  • Camera – Great photos are assured!
  • Waterproof jacket – Colombia is tropical and the odd down-burst is to be expected.

Flights Most international flights arrive at El Dorado International Airport in Bogota.  You will therefore usually need to organise short domestic flights to and from Medellín and Cali.

If you’d like to arrive a day or two early, please let us know if you need help with accommodation.

Please wait for your booking to be accepted before booking flights.

Airport Transfers Airport transfers are all included.  We’ll meet you at the airport at the beginning of your trip and drop you back there at the end.

Colombia This is the perfect time to visit Colombia.  Her sometimes violent past contrasts strongly with the bright and happy present.  The stability that Colombia enjoys is expressed clearly in the smiley faces, the relaxed and friendly conversations.  Whether travelling through the air or along roads less travelled, you’ll feel very welcome here

Visa for Colombia Citizens of most European countries and the US do not normally require a visa for visits to Colombia for stays of up to 90 days.  You might need to provide proof of onwards travel (e.g. return flight ticket). Please check visa requirements well in advance.

Health and Vaccinations Your routine vaccinations should be up-to-date.  These usually include diphtheria, tetanus and polio.   Travel clinics will also usually recommend Hepatitis A and Typhoid.  Whilst we will be travelling in an area that is low risk for many diseases compared to many parts of the country, please be sure to consult your doctor several months BEFORE your trip for professional medical advice.  Sun-cream and a hat are recommended!

Travel Money The local currency is the Peso.  The easiest (and probably cheapest) way to get cash is by using the ATMs in all the small towns we wander through.

Paragliding Skills Preparation Ground handle, ground handle, ground handle! The top pilots in the world spend hours every month playing with their wings…on the ground! The happier you are with your ground handling, the better you will understand your wing (e.g. pitch, roll, yaw and pressure control), the safer will be your launches, the safer will be your landings and the safer you will be in the air.  Those good at ground handling also tend to spend less time “stuffing up” their launches and so tend to spend more time in the air.  They also tend to be the more confident on launch and can therefore concentrate on the flying!!  To maximise your safety and the safety of those in your proximity (!), to maximise your enjoyment – ground handle ground handle and then ground handle!!!

Paragliding Insurance We require you to have insurance that covers repatriation.  Please make sure that your insurance is valid for Colombia and of course that paragliding is covered!  We recommend you research your insurance options thoroughly and read the small print carefully.  Please bring insurance documents with you .  You will not be allowed to fly without proof of insurance!!

Flying documents for Colombia You must bring all you flying documents with you, including your flying licence and your paragliding insurance documents.   Most sites in Colombia incur fees.  These fees are covered by Passion Paragliding and included in the cost of this trip.

Safety and Medical Facilities Safety is our absolute priority.  We continually assess flying conditions in our passionate endeavour to keep you as safe as possible.  However, please understand that although we will do all we can to ensure your safety, you should know your own level of ability and as a qualified pilot when it comes to flying understand that it is your decision to fly, and yours alone!

Taking a break and non-flying activities If ever it’s not flyable here, there’s plenty to do.  We’ll be there to help where we can.  There’s a very high chance of it being flyable every day. If you feel tired from all the flying why not take a break?  Flying is always safer when well rested.

Live Tracking As with all our cross country trips, we’ll be using live-trackers for your safety.  These are included in the cost of the trip and they’ll also help with some optional post-flight analysis, so if you want to learn and improve your XC skills and decision making you’ve got the perfect set-up.

Maps and waypoints Shortly before your trip we’ll send you an updated set of way-points and on arrival you’ll receive a flying map.

What’s Included?

The following is all included on this trip:

  • Hotel accommodation with hearty breakfast.
  • Full guiding service with top guides: THREE top guides to fly with you including world record pilot Toby Colombé.
  • Airport Transfers (Medellin / Cali).
  • All transport for the 15 days.

Not included are return flights to Colombia; insurance and vaccinations; drinks and meals.

Price for 15 day XC Safari:  £2,150

Price for 15 day Big XC Camp:  £2,150

What they said about last year

The previous 3 trips  [to Colombia]  with [another operator] have always been rather trying with an odd mix of very competitive pilots which lead to a disjointed group with little harmony. I would always recommend Passion Paragliding.
I have been on many flying trips to many flying sites in many countries over the years and none have been as well thought out, efficiently organised, planned and coordinated as this recent trip to Colombia with Passion Paragliding.
Everything was extremely well organised – the flying, retrieve system, accommodation, food. There wasn’t a thing for us to worry about except flying well. It was just a fabulous flying holiday!

To apply for a place on this trip, just click the button below and select your preferred week.    Please also write a line or two about your XC experience in the comments box.

April 22, 2024 - Protests at Columbia and other schools escalate

Matt Egan, Alicia Wallace and Chandelis Duster

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology says it is 'determining next steps'

From CNN's Jillian Sykes

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology issued a statement Monday regarding tents on its campus.

"MIT officials are aware of the tents, and are determining next steps with a focus on ensuring campus is physically safe and fully functioning. MIT Police were on scene throughout the night and will continue to be present."

Robert Kraft says he is willing to support The Kraft Center at the university

From CNN's Chandelis Duster

Robert Kraft, billionaire owner of the NFL’s New England Patriots and backer of Columbia University, on Monday said he is still willing to support The Kraft Center at the school that supports Jewish students, calling it “a haven of safety.”

Kraft, an alumnus of the university, told CNN’s Jake Tapper on “The Lead” that he loves the school and “we have to have accountability.”

“There are both professors and students within the university who say things that I think cross the line and there should be accountability. I believe in free speech. Say whatever you want but pay the consequences. And don't have your face covered. I don't think that should be allowed,” he said.

“I can’t believe in New York City at Columbia University Jewish students are afraid to go to classes in the United States of America in 2024. It’s amazing to me and horrible,” Kraft also said.

Asked where he drew the line at Columbia University regarding both pro-Palestine and pro-Israel protests and what he finds objectionable, he said “there is a lack of education on the situation” happening in the Middle East.

“I’m concerned about America and what’s going on in this country. And to keep it open and free for all people of all backgrounds to do as they wish,” he said.

Asked if he has confidence in Columbia University’s president, Minouche Shafik, he said he thinks she is “very well intentioned” and said “we have to look at what goes on with faculty.”

Columbia faculty stage walk-out in solidarity with students

From CNN's John Towfighi

Hundreds of people gathered on Low Plaza Monday afternoon as Columbia University faculty delivered speeches in support of the student protesters who were suspended and arrested Thursday.

Faculty who spoke denounced university president Minouche Shafik’s decision to authorize the New York Police Department to remove protesters from campus and demanded all legal and disciplinary charges be dismissed and expunged from students' records.

Faculty held signs that read, “Hands off our students,” and “End student suspensions now.” Some faculty donned their academic regalia and wore sashes that read, “We support students.”

Speeches were met with cheers and claps from the crowd, as well as chants for Shafik to resign.

Christopher Brown, a professor of history, said, “I’m here because I am so concerned about what is happening at this university, with where we are now and with where we are going. Thursday April 18, 2024, will be remembered as a shameful day in Columbia history.”

“The president’s decision to send riot police to pick up peaceful protesters on our campus was unprecedented, unjustified, disproportionate, divisive and dangerous,” Brown said.

US Rep. Ilhan Omar, whose daughter Isra Hirsi was among the protesters arrested Thursday , posted on X that while she’s glad to see faculty demonstrate in solidarity with students, she wants the protests to focus on Gaza.

"On Thursday, Columbia arrested and suspended its students who were peacefully protesting and have now ignited a nationwide Gaza Solidarity movement. This is more than the students hoped for and I am glad to see this type of solidarity. But to be clear, this about the genocide in Gaza and the attention has to remain on that," Omar wrote.

NYC Mayor condemns "vile" and "disgusting" rhetoric at college campuses

From CNN's Alicia Wallace

New York City Mayor Eric Adams on Monday condemned “vile” and “disgusting” rhetoric being used at campuses such as Columbia University, where students are holding protests over the Israel-Hamas War.

Adams told CNN’s Jake Tapper that he supports First Amendment rights but said law enforcement officials are on the ready if any of that speech goes too far or if there’s an imminent threat to people or property.

"That is one of the fundamental rights we hold dear as Americans: The right to protest," Adams said on CNN's "The Lead." "What we have seen playing out on many of our college campuses, and particularly Columbia University, is hate. We’re seeing vile language being used."

Adams noted that he can feel the "duality of this moment" and how the events of the past six months are weighing heavily on Jewish and Palestinian New Yorkers. He added that the police escorts of Jewish students through campus were reminiscent of the Army soldiers who escorted nine Black students into a high school in Little Rock, Arkansas, nearly 67 years ago.

"There is no place for hate in this city," he said.

New York Police Department officers have a “large presence” surrounding Columbia but have remained off the campus grounds at the request of the school’s administration, NYPD deputy commissioners said earlier on Monday.

Adams told Tapper that the NYPD’s commissioner of legal matter is monitoring the protests for any speech that violates law. Additionally, police officers will take "appropriate action" and go on private property if there’s an "imminent threat."

Protesters gather at The New School in New York City

From CNN's Elisabeth Buchwald

The New School students and pro-Palestinian supporters rally outside The New School University Center building, Monday, April 22, 2024, in New York.

Protesters have gathered at The New School, located near the Chelsea area of the New York City borough of Manhattan.

An encampment of four tents was set up in the lobby of the building that houses auditoriums, a cafeteria and a library. Roughly 75 students, and other people who have The New School IDs, gathered inside the building.

"Disclose, divest, we will not stop, we will not stop, we will not rest," was repeatedly chanted.

Outside the building, protesters from the school, as well as outsiders, joined in chants from the sidewalk.

There is a stark difference between the inside and outside of Columbia University's campus

From CNN's Ramishah Maruf

A pro-Palestine rally is held at the steps of Lowe Library on the grounds of Columbia University today in New York City.

There’s a stark difference between the inside of Columbia University's campus and the outside, where there are protesters gathered on the street.

The encampment is only open to those affiliated with campus. Only those with a Columbia ID can enter the campus gates. Inside the encampment, programs include teach-ins, poetry readings and film screenings. Some students are quietly finishing assignments, while others are painting posters.

Elsewhere around campus, students are eating and completing assignments. Many students take graduation pictures at this time, and some are in graduation gowns walking down Broadway. Risers are set up for an upcoming commencement ceremony.

Other students are holding large American flags underneath Butler Library.

Pro-Palestinian and Pro-israel face off outside of Columbia University which is occupied by Pro-Palestinian protesters in New York on April 22, 2024.

But the students can still hear the tension that is taking place yards away at the university gates. There is a gathering of pro-Palestinian protesters, who in the early afternoon were chanting “I believe that we will win” and “Long Live the Intifada.” There was a smaller group of pro-Israeli protesters, who chanted back “Down with Hamas” and “Victory to Israel.” A line of New York Police officers were monitoring the street.

What it's like inside the Columbia University encampment

Students protest in support of Palestinians on Columbia University campus, as protests continue inside and outside the university in New York City on April 22.

The inside of the encampment is quiet – most of the noise comes from protestors outside the gates of Columbia University's campus, who are chanting “I believe that we will win” and “Long live the Intifada."

It was a sunny day on campus, and in one corner, students were painting posters. One person strummed a stringed instrument, and other students are reading books or on their laptops finishing assignments. Others have donated provisions, ranging from a table of snacks to hygiene products. There was also a pile of blankets.

“We’ve just been trying to keep students mobilized and keep pushing for divestment,” Dalia, a first-year student at Columbia College, told CNN. “We are a very mobilized student body and a very unified student body. Hundreds of people have been in and out of the encampment.”

CNN agreed not to publish her surname due to safety concerns.

She said the students at the campus “refuse to be complicit in the genocide, the apartheid, and the occupation of Palestine.”

There are strict community guidelines for the encampment. One rule says not to share names or details of anyone met in camp, and asking for permission before photographing or taking video.

The encampment is filled with dozens and dozens of tents, from students to neighboring Barnard College staff. Today’s encampment program included an Earth Day performance, poetry reading and a Dabka lesson, a traditional dance from the Arab region. Prior program events included dance performances from different cultures.

Democratic House members tour Columbia campus

Democratic Reps. Jared Moskowitz of Florida, Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey, Dan Goldman of New York and Kathy Manning of North Carolina, who are all Jewish, spoke at a news conference Monday after touring Columbia University’s campus.

"We saw it firsthand as we walked past the encampments on the university's main lawn full of protesters spewing incendiary antisemitic hate and vitriol. Many aren't even Columbia students I've been told. Their campaign of intimidation is sickening and shocking and as the White House said yesterday, ‘echoes the rhetoric of Hamas terrorists,'" Gottheimer said.

He also criticized Columbia University leadership, saying, “toothless combinations from administrators aren't going to stop the anarchy we’re seeing.”

“The only way to do it is with deeds, not words,” Gottheimer said. “Colleges have a legal obligation under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act to provide students, including Jews and Muslims, a school environment free from discrimination and harassment based on race color or national origin. Yet just feet from here, Jewish students are being verbally and even physically assaulted.”

Gottheimer continued, “To the administrators of Columbia and beyond, here are our demands: Stop the double talk and start acting now. Discipline harassers, restore civility on this campus, encourage peaceful constructive dialogue.”

He also gave a message for students: “While the leadership of Columbia may be failing you, we will not. We will do everything in our power to keep you safe and do everything in Washington we can to make sure that you feel welcome at this university or any university across the United States of America. And Columbia University, if they don't follow through, will pay the price.”

Goldman said he was "encouraged" the Columbia University president issued guidelines about additional security, calling it a "very important first step" and criticized what is happening on campus.

"That is unacceptable for a university, that is unacceptable for an academic institution. There is no question that everyone has a First Amendment right to speak out in this country and that must be preserved," Goldman said. "But a university and all universities have an obligation to maintain the safety and security of their students from all backgrounds."

Manning said university leadership should "do more to keep Jewish students safe and to re-establish an atmosphere in which all students can learn, study and participate safely in campus life."

"Columbia must also move forward with its promised efforts to teach its students and its faculty about the nature and history and dangers of antisemitism. It must ensure that Columbia professors are not encouraging and spreading antisemitism," Manning said.

"I call on the US Department of Education and the US Department of Justice to work with the White House to ensure that all universities take steps necessary to keep Jewish students and faculty safe. I also call on Congress to enact legislation to implement the steps outlined in the US national strategy to counter antisemitism, to address the scourge of antisemitism which is a threat to the foundations of our democracy," she said.

President Joe Biden condemns antisemitism on campus

From CNN's Kevin Liptak

U.S. President Joe Biden delivers remarks during a visit to Prince William Forest Park to commemorate Earth Day in Triangle, Virginia, today.

President Joe Biden decried antisemitic protests around college campuses Monday and said his administration was working to combat anti-Jewish hatred.

"I condemn the antisemitic protests, that’s why I’ve set up a program to deal with that," Biden said when questioned about the events at Columbia University in New York.

"I also condemn those who don’t understand what’s going on with the Palestinians," he said, without expanding upon what he meant.

Biden was speaking after an Earth Day event in Prince William Forest Park in Triangle, Virginia.

When asked whether Columbia's president should resign, Biden appeared to mishear: "I didn’t know that. I'll have to find out more," he said.
