Bahu Fort & Gardens

Bahu fort is the oldest Fort stands on rock facing towards the left bank of the river Tawi. It is 5 km away from Jammu city. It is surrounded by beautiful terraced garden popularly known as Bagh-e-Bahu. It is said to have been built by Raja Bahulochan over 3,000 years ago. It had been later improved by Dogra rulers. There is a temple inside the Fort also that is dedicated to Goddess Kali.

Raghunath Temple

Raghunath temple is the most popular temple in Jammu, located in the city center dedicated to Lord Rama. It is considered probably the largest temple complex in northern India. Maharaja Ranbir Singh is said to have built this temple in 1860 AD. Giganatic statues of deities and various Lingams can be seen in its inner sanctums. It also houses precious ancient texts and manuscripts. One can spot various forms or incarnations of Lord Vishnu along with numerous saligrams.

Ranbireshwar Temple

This is historically significant temple in Jammu, dedicated to Lord Shiva built by Maharaja Ranbir Singh in 1883 AD. The main attraction of the temple is its seven and a half ft tall Lingam in the center and twelve Shiva Lingam of crystal measuring from 15 to 38.

Mahamaya Temple and City Forest

Temple is named after local freedom fighter Mahamaya from the Dogra community. Mahamaya is said to have scarified her life to save the region from foreign invaders. It is located on the banks of Tawai River behind Bahu Fort. The City forest surrounds the ancient Mahamaya temple. Bahu temple is seen from here.

Peer Khoh It is believed to say that epic Ramayana character Jamvant (the bear god) meditated here in this cave. Peer Khoh cave temple is located on the bank of River Tawi at a distance of merely 3 km from the city. There is a naturally formed Shiva lingam in the cave which is quite mysterious as neither its antiquity nor its cause is known.

Peer Baba Behind the Civil Airport is the famous durgah of the Muslim saint, Peer Budhan Ali Shah. On Thursdays, Hindu and Sikh devotees who visit this shrine, vastly outnumber the Muslim devotees.

Mubarak Mandi Palace

It is basically a Palace complex, was once the royal residence of Maharaja of Jammu & Kashmir from the Dogra Dynasty. The Palace is located in center of the old walled city dating back to 1824 and remained the main seat of Dogra Dynasty till 1925. Main attractions of the Palace are the Sheesh Mahal and The Pink Hall featuring Rajasthani, Mughal architecture & various miniature paintings. The Palace has a overlooking view of Tawi River.

This 3 days itinerary is the perfect guide to the best things to see in Jammu. It includes day-by-day activities, travel tips, and the top places to visit.

Day 1: Exploring the City of Temples

Start your day with a visit to the Raghunath Temple , one of the largest temple complexes in North India. Spend a few hours exploring the seven shrines within the complex. Take a short walk to the nearby Dogra Art Museum , which houses a rich collection of artifacts and paintings.

Head to the Mubarak Mandi Palace , a beautiful blend of Rajasthani, Mughal, and European architecture. Visit the Dogra Art Gallery located within the palace complex. Enjoy a traditional Dogra meal at one of the local restaurants.
