Sydney Olympic Park

A trip to Sydney Olympic Park offers so many fun things to see and do

places to visit in sydney olympic park

Sydney Olympic Park is a complete destination, providing everything for a fun day or several fun filled days for the entire family. Created for the 2000 summer Olympics, this huge 1060 acre multifaceted park arose from an industrial wasteland and dumping site in the suburbs 16 kilometres west of downtown Sydney. Today it is a diverse park featuring world class sporting venues, nature parks, restaurants and more.

With more than 5000 events annually, there are many enjoyable activities in the park for the entire family to enjoy. Many are free. You can watch or even participate in a sporting event, enjoy watching a free outdoor movie, or explore walking-trails with lookouts and views. Other amenities and activities in the park include playgrounds, picnic and BBQ areas, skateboarding, cycling, including BMX and Mountain X, swimming, exploring woodlands and wetlands, golf or mini-golf and much more.

Each April, the park hosts the annual Sydney Royal Easter Show; a large, agricultural themed fair taking place since 1823. The two-week show features an amusement park, craft shows, cat and dog shows, flower shows, cooking shows, livestock, produce exhibits and more.

Thirty restaurants, cafes and bars located in the park mean you`re never too far away from some great food or refreshments.

Olympic Park has a great website (see link below) that will give you more details about the many things you can see and do there.

The park has its own railway station, which you get to by changing trains at the nearby Lidcombe Station. Taking a Sydney Ferry from Circular Quay is another option for getting to the park. This offers some great sightseeing along the way, however, you`ll have a fairly long walk or a 15 minute bus ride from the ferry wharf to the central area of the park. Although the train is faster, consider taking the ferry and bus one way and a train the other way in order to see a wider variety of scenery along the way. The first place to go when you arrive at the park is the Visitor Centre, just south of the railway station. There you can get a Park map and a brochure showing what events are happening.

The countdown has officially begun for the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics

Melissa Woodley

It’s hard to believe that an Olympic year has rolled around yet again. In 2024, the world’s largest sporting event will bring together more than 10,500 athletes (5,250 women and 5,250 men) in a grand spectacle encompassing 329 medal events across 32 sports. Whether you're lucky enough to be travelling to Paris or tuning in from half way around the world, there are countless ways to get around the green and gold. Here’s everything you need to know about watching the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics.

Stay in the loop: sign up for our free Time Out Australia newsletter for more news, travel inspo and activity ideas, straight to your inbox.

Where are the 2024 Olympics?

The Games will be hosted in Paris, France across 41 venues, with the surfing competition taking place in Teahupo’o, Tahiti.

Arguably France’s most famous stadium, the Stade De France will host the athletics and rugby sevens competitions. The lawns of Champ de Mars, between the Eiffel Tower and the École Militaire, will transform into a pop-up arena for beach volleyball, judo and wrestling, while one of the city's most famous public squares at the eastern end of the Champs-Élyséess, Place De La Concorde, will turn into an urban park for the BMX freestyle, skateboarding, breaking and 3x3 basketball events.

When are the 2024 Olympics?

The Olympic Games will kick off with a spectacular opening ceremony on Friday, July 26 and will continue for 19 days, ending with the closing ceremony on Sunday, August 11.

The first events technically begin two days before the opening ceremony with preliminary handball, archery, football and rugby sevens games commencing on Wednesday, July 24 and Thursday, July 25.

From July 27, you can tune into the artistic gymnastics, badminton, basketball, beach volleyball, boxing and canoe slalom events.  You can check out the competition schedule here .

What time is the Olympic opening ceremony?

In 2024, the largest-ever Olympic Games opening ceremony will take place on July 26. The grand spectacle will begin at 8.24pm local time in Paris and is the first time that a Summer Games opening ceremony will be hosted outside a stadium. During the ceremony, athletes will travel down the Seine River on boats, allowing spectators to line the riverbanks and cheer on their teams for free.

If you’re hoping to tune it from Australia, then be prepared for an early start. The ceremony will be streamed at 2.24am AWST (WA), 3.54am ACST (SA, NT) and 4.24am AEST (QLD, NSW, VIC, TAS and ACT).

Where can I watch the 2024 Olympics in Australia?

The 2024 Olympic Games will be broadcast in Australia on more than 40 free-to-air channels under the Nine Network. You can also watch on-demand highlights for free after they’ve happened at your own convenience on its 9Now streaming platform.

The 9Now platform can be accessed on your web browser  or through your Smart TV, mobile or tablet after downloading the app .

Who’s representing Australia in the 2024 Olympics?

Australia is gearing up to send almost 500 athletes to this year’s Summer Olympics. While teams are still being finalised, you can stay updated on the selections made so far here .

On April 15, the first batch of Aussie track and field athletes were named, including 19-year-old, 800m runner Claudia Hollingsworth and Olympic veteran hurdler Michelle Jenneke . Athletes have also been chosen for the boxing, breaking (brand new Olympic event), canoe, sailing, climbing and swimming events, with the full team to be announced in the coming months.

Have the Matildas qualified for the 2024 Olympics?

Australia’s women’s football team, the Matildas, secured their spot in the 2024 Olympics after winning the third and final round of the 2024 AFC Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament in February. They are currently ranked as the third-best team in Group B (behind USA and Germany) and the 12th best team worldwide.

The Matilda’s made the semi-final round at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, but just missed out on a medal after losing to the USA by one point.

Meanwhile, Australia’s men’s football team, the Olyroos, are currently vying for a spot in the Paris Olympics at the U23 AFC Asian Cup.

How many medals will Australia win at the 2024 Olympics?

With less than 100 days until the Games begin, data specialist Gracenote has released its predicted medal standings for each country. Australia is slated to finish in fifth place on the medal tally with a total of 50 medals, including 13 gold, 19 silver and 18 bronze. However, you can never predict these things – after all, who doesn’t love an underdog?

The USA tops the forecasted medal tally with a predicted 123 medals, followed by China with 89, Great Britain with 66, and France with 55.

When are the 2024 Paralympics?

The 2024 Paralympic Games are set to take place in Paris from Wednesday, August 28 to Sunday, September 8. The games will feature 549 events across 22 sports, including blind football, boccia (a form of precision ball sport), sitting volleyball and wheelchair basketball.

You can check out the competition schedule here .

Where is the next Olympics in Australia?

The 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be hosted in Brisbane , Queensland. This marks Australia’s third time hosting a Summer Olympics.

When was the last Olympics in Australia?

Sydney hosted Australia’s most recent Summer Olympic Games in 2000. Before Sydney, Australia had only hosted the Olympics once before, in Melbourne in 1956.

Fears for world-renowned skateboarding mecca as developers eye Fremantle Woolstores

Plans to develop a heritage site south of Perth have cast uncertainty over the future of one of the world's most coveted urban skateboarding meccas.

The proposal by property developers Hesperia would see the site — which was first built in 1927 and extended in 1950 — turned into a renovated hub with a mixture of hospitality, office and residential offerings.

A bunch of skateboarders gather outside a building with two of them embracing.

Operations ceased at the Woolstores in 1982, but the site was brought to life in the late 1980s when skateboarders discovered the uninterrupted ledge around the building was ideal for practising new tricks.

Plans for the building are yet to be finalised, but skateboarders are trying to convince developers to retain parts of the site's infrastructure.

Trick site draws international interest

Ben Bowring moved to Fremantle from regional Western Australia in the 1990s, after watching videos of skaters gliding along the uninterrupted ledge outside the Woolstores.

A man named Ben Bowring sitting with his feet on a skateboard.

"People all around the world travel to Fremantle to skate this place, the same way they travel to Fremantle to check out the river and the ocean," Mr Bowring said.

"This place is like home."

Mr Bowring said interest in the site had only grown over the decades.

A man named Ben Bowring skates on a rail while being watched by other skaters.

"It's still relevant 30 years on, it will be relevant 30 years from now because its perfect for skateboarding, whereas every skate park is going to get outdated because they're purpose-built areas," he said.

"[The ledge] goes on for so long, it's got shade for most of the day, the perfect height, smooth ground," he said.

"This place is a dream come true for a skateboarder."

A long-range shot of a large building with some people gathering outside.

Iconic site inspires next generation

The next generation of skateboarders have come to use Woolstores as a way to test themselves under the same conditions as the Olympic-level athletes that have visited the site.

Eleven-year-old Tayah Payne said practising at the Woolstores was an important step in achieving her Olympic dreams.

A young girl named Taylah Payne smiles while holding a skateboard as another person skates behind her.

"The wool sheds are so special because the ledges are not too high and not too low and they're the perfect length, so you can learn a lot of tricks on them," she said.

Tayah said she was immediately welcomed to the space when she started out.

An unidentified man carries a skateboard next to his tattooed leg.

"It feels really good because when I get a trick all the boys cheer me on and it just feels so good," she said.

"The environment with all the people skating is just so cheerful and so happy."

Developers working with community

In a statement, Hesperia's director Kyle Jeavons said the company bought the site in 2022 and was "very aware that in its long, vacant state some very important cultural communities were able to thrive at the space."

"We are focused on balancing the needs of Fremantle's existing community, whilst hoping to create a project that reflects excellence in heritage restoration, design, and supports the positive and sustainable growth of Fremantle," he said.

Rowan White from the West Australian Skating Association has been consulting with the company and said he was hopeful about the future of the Woolstores.

"Ideally, of course we see the space redeveloped and revitalised, but we retain the important parts of the building that keep it a special skate spot, so the length of the ledge and our ability to skate here," he said.

"There's so much that can change and make it even more of an amazing place and a shared space for the public as well."

Skaters 'breathe life' into disused space

It was the kinship and support among skateboarders that fuelled Mr White to lead the Woolstores Forever campaign.

The campaign aims to promote and preserve what's referred to as WA's "oldest and most famous skating spot."

Mr White said he had been encouraged by the response from skateboarders and the wider community.

"We've had a lot of interest from some big companies and international brands who want to get behind it because they understand how important it is to skating and keep that going," he said.

"Skaters have breathed life into this otherwise disused building for the last 30-35 years and created a thriving culture here and put Freo on the map internationally in skateboarding."

"If they want to redevelop a place and bring it back to life, there's already so much life here that we've created so it would be great to work together on that."
