15 Best Day Trips from Auckland

Often overlooked by tourists heading elsewhere in New Zealand, Auckland is well worth taking an extra couple of days to explore so you can experience the urban side of the country.

The city itself is full of multi-cultural cuisine and events, world-class specialty coffee shops and a wide range of New Zealand’s best boutiques.

There is also plenty of history – both colonial and indigenous – natural beauty and of course “fush ‘n chups” – a local delicacy that was imported by the British and perfected by the remaining Kiwis.

It is also a great city to use as a base whilst you explore other parts of the North Island, with most places in Northland, Waikato and Bay of Plenty being easily accessible from the city within a day trip.

Here are 15 of the best trips you can take from New Zealand’s largest city.

1. Hobbiton

Hobbiton, New Zealand

One of the most popular day trips for visitors to New Zealand, immerse yourself in the Lord of the Rings franchise in Hobbiton.

Here, you can explore the hobbit holes that were built for use in the Hobbit trilogy, and enjoy the stunning natural beauty of the region.

You can also enjoy Lord of the Rings themed drinks at the Green Dragon Inn and sample some of New Zealand’s fine cuisine at The Shire’s Rest Café.

There is a guided tour around the complex which takes around two hours, but you are free to explore the area afterwards and, of course, get your photo taken in front of the hobbit holes.

2. Waitomo Caves

Waitomo Caves

The Waitomo Caves is a large network of underground caves that are filled with glowworms.

You can enjoy the caves by taking a gentle boat ride throughout the complex, with a local guide explaining how the caves formed and a little bit about the glowworms.

There is also the opportunity to go black water rafting; you can get your adrenaline fix by riding a flume through the caves in the pitch black, with only the gentle glow of the glowworms to guide your way.

A great experience in a country famed for its adrenaline sports and attractions.

3. Waiheke Island

Waiheke Island

A short boat ride away from Auckland Central Business District (CBD), you can opt to either enjoy the high-life of the city’s socialites or have a more down to earth experience with the local hippy communities.

Waiheke is well known in the region for its vineyards and there are plenty of wineries set in stunning spots across the island for you to sample the local wine.

There are many beautiful beaches around the island, several of which can be very secluded if you go at the right time.

We also suggest you try Waiheke Oysters at one of the many cafés.

4. Piha, Karekare Rainforest and Waitakere Ranges

Piha, New Zealand

Known as Auckland’s Wild West, this region is only an hour away from the Auckland CBD and packed with natural beauty.

Piha itself is a small village with one of the most famous beaches in the country.

You can continue up the coast to Bethell’s Beach – where Taylor Swift once filmed her Out of the Woods music video.

Away from the beaches, you can enjoy some spectacular hikes through the Waitakere Ranges – a small mountain range formed by the Auckland volcanic fault.

These mountains are covered in forests – known locally as bush – with Karekare Rainforest being the most popular for experiencing the lush green beauty of New Zealand.

Suggested tour : Piha & Karekare Rainforest Wine Day Tour from Auckland

5. Rangitoto Island

Rangitoto Island

Also a short boat ride from Auckland CBD, Rangitoto Island is the largest volcano in the Auckland volcanic fault and can be seen from most areas of the city.

Get your hiking boots on to truly experience the best this island has to offer, including unique wildlife and lush forest areas.

Once you reach the top, you will be treated to great views over the Hauraki Gulf and towards Auckland City.

You can also take a small detour to nearby caves to discover more of the volcanic wonders this island has to offer.

If you don’t feel like taking a long hike, there is a small train that takes you most of the way up to the top of the island.

Please be aware there are no restaurants or inhabitants on the island, so bring some snacks and plenty of water.

6. Coromandel

Cathedral Cove Beach, Coromandel

Just across the Hauraki Gulf from Auckland, a two-hour journey brings you to this secluded peninsula.

It is not as touristy as other parts of the country, so a great off-the-beaten-path option if you are looking to get away from the busier attractions.

The Coromandel Peninsula is a large mountain range covered entirely in ancient New Zealand forest.

There is an interesting train ride attraction where you can learn about the local pottery industry, and some of the smaller towns showcase New Zealand culture at its most raw.

We suggest checking out Paeroa on the way, to learn about the most famous local soda – L&P – named after the town.

Suggested tour : Coromandel & Cathedral Cove Day Tour

7. Bay of Islands

Bay of Islands, New Zealand

Located in the far north of the country, the Bay of Islands is another popular destination for tourists – particularly in the summer months.

It is one of the only subtropical areas of the country and this enhances the laid-back lifestyle of the local towns.

Head to the bay itself to experience one of the most beautiful beaches in New Zealand, as well as try out some water sports such as windsurfing, kayaking, and jet-skiing.

In Russell, you can visit a Maori experience to learn more about the indigenous culture of the islands, and about the Treaty of Waitangi, which established New Zealand as a British Dominion.

Rotorua, New Zealand

A bit of a longer journey from Auckland, Rotorua is well worth the trip.

Centered around Lake Rotorua, the town (known locally as Rotovegas) is packed with adrenaline sports activities like parachute jumping, bungee jumping, and zorbing.

If you are traveling with kids, there is a very popular go-kart track that winds around the nearby hills, giving great views over the countryside.

There are great Maori cultural centers for you to experience the indigenous history and a native redwood forest for day hikes.

The town is the center of geothermal activity, making it excellent for visiting natural spas and checking out the steam.

It does also, however, give the town a very distinctive rotten-egg smell, so keep this in mind before you go.

Taupo Lake, New Zealand

A little further south than Rotorua, but also well worth a visit, is Taupo.

The entire Lake Taupo region is a popular getaway destination for kiwis during the summer, thanks to the breathtaking natural beauty.

You can enjoy boat journeys – or even kayak rides if you’re up to it – to Maori carvings and secluded beaches by lakeside.

The town is also a short drive away from Tongariro National Park.

This is where the Mordor scenes of the Lord of the Rings were filmed and it is easy to see why, thanks to the desert-like almost lunar landscapes the region showcases.

There are free hot springs in the town park, but make sure only to enter pools which signs confirm are safe, as others are far too hot!

Raglan, New Zealand

Located on the west coast of the North Island, Raglan is a very popular destination for surfers.

Surfing is very popular across both New Zealand and Australia, and if you want to try your hand at the sport, this town is one of the best places in the world to have a go.

It is also surrounded by gorgeous native bush and mountain ranges for you to explore when you tire of the waves.

The cliffs provide great views over the Tasman Sea and the town of Raglan; with a little bit of effort and a short hike, you can discover secluded waterfalls with fresh water that you can bathe in and even drink from.

11. Villa Maria Estate

Villa Maria Estate

New Zealand wine is growing in popularity across the world, thanks to the great climate and dedication to quality given by local winemakers.

The Villa Maria Estate is located just outside of Auckland Central, close to the airport; however, we do recommend setting a day aside to visit the area.

The winery produces wine with grapes grown across the country in Gisborne, Marlborough, Hawke’s Bay, and Auckland.

You will be given samples of wine from all the regions and taught about how it is produced, as well as given the chance to make your own tasting notes.

This is a must for any wine lover visiting New Zealand.

Available tour : Villa Maria Estate Scenic Vineyard Odyssey

12. Matakana

Matakana

Located in the northern reaches of rural Auckland, Matakana is another area of natural beauty within a reasonably short trip from the city center.

Popular with foodies, there are plenty of great attractions in the region to let you discover the best New Zealand food has to offer.

The New Zealand Honey Centre will teach you all about Manuka Honey and the strict quality efforts that go into producing it.

You can sample local cheeses and wines at the Matakana farmers’ market.

On the way, stop in at the Puhoi Cheese Factory if you are interested in learning more about local dairy production.

13. Cape Reinga

Cape Reinga, New Zealand

Cape Reinga is at New Zealand’s northernmost tip, where you can see the Tasman Sea join the Pacific Ocean.

Here, you can learn about the combinations of European and Maori history, as well as about Maori mythology; this is a culturally important place for the local Maori people.

There is also an impressive 800-year-old Pohutukawa Tree – if you visit in the summer, you will be able to see it bloom with bright red foliage – a popular symbol for New Zealand and its people.

Continue south from Cape Reinga and you can check out 90 Mile Beach.

Here you can surf the sand dunes that line one of the largest beaches in the country, all while enjoying spectacular views over the ocean.

14. Tiritiri Matangi

Tiritiri Matangi

Another Hauraki Gulf island worth visiting, you can take a slightly longer boat trip from Auckland CBD to this protected nature reserve.

The island is packed with native birdlife thanks to major conservation efforts.

Many of the birds on the island can only be found here, and this is an opportunity to get up close to the unique wildlife of New Zealand.

You can visit the island at your own pace, or take a short tour which will teach you all about the birds that inhabit the island and how to identify their calls.

There is also a ferry to the Whangaparaoa Peninsula, which is home to secluded beaches and a laid-back café culture, perfect for you to experience the famous New Zealand flat white.

15. Mount Maunganui

Mount Maunganui

Located in the northern suburbs of Tauranga, Mount Maunganui is a major party town by night and a relaxed beach town by day.

There are plenty of options for you to try out surfing, kayaking, and jet-skiing on the beach which overlooks the Bay of Plenty.

You can also take a hike up Mount Maunganui itself to get one of the most famous panoramic views in the country.

On your way back to the beach, check out some of the top-notch cafés on offer in the city, which feature excellent Kiwi cuisine, well-crafted specialty coffee, and even alcoholic milkshakes if you are looking to really kick back and embrace the local life.

Strolling on the Tiritiri Matangi’s bush and beach trails may also reveal up to 30 other bird species.

Auckland’s island of wine is a favorite escape for city locals, drawn to Waiheke’s vineyard restaurants and a Mediterranean-style microclimate that’s equal parts southern Europe and southern hemisphere. Challenge yourself on EcoZip’ s zip line adventure, soaring high above vineyards and native bush, before a long lunch at the Spanish-influenced Casita Miro .

How to get to Waiheke Island:  Catch the passenger ferry with Fullers360 from downtown Auckland, and then use the convenient 50A and 50B bus services from Auckland Transport to get around the island. You’ll need to buy a stored value AT HOP card to use on the bus. Car ferries with Sealink leave from central Auckland’s Wynyard Quarter and Half Moon Bay in east Auckland.

Have a beachfront meal in Waihi

Why go? Gold-mining history and clifftop walking

Towering Phoenix palms and stately buildings line Waihi’s main street, a legacy of the quiet Waikato town’s gold-flecked past. Explore the region’s lustrous history at the award-winning Gold Discovery Centre , join a tour to learn about the sprawling Martha Mine, or divert to nearby Waihi Beach and tackle the Orokawa Bay walk high above the beach’s surf-trimmed arc. A late lunch or early dinner at Flatwhite 's beachfront location is recommended.

If this sounds a bit too tame for you, there is also the option of black water rafting. This means you’ll raft through the caves in pitch black (whilst floating in the water, in an innertube), with only the glowworms to guide you.

If you’re looking for something more relaxing, why not head to one of the many thermal spas or hike into the native redwood forest?

As the town is full of geothermal activity, there is a distinct smell of rotten egg/sulphur. It can take some getting used to but it’s well worth it.

Rotorua is around a 3-hour drive from Auckland.

Pro Tip: We would generally suggest overnighting in Rotorua as there’s so, so much to do there. With that said, if there’s one particular activity/attraction that you’d like to see, there’s no reason it can’t be done in a day.

There are also plenty of other sites to visit on the island including the old WWII military sites, Islington Bay, and Mullet beach.

Motutapu Island connects to Rangitoto Island via a causeway, so you can visit both on the same day.

The ferry from Central Auckland to Motutapu takes about 25 minutes.

17 Exciting Auckland Day Trips: Nearby Adventures Within 2 Hours of CBD

Map of the North Island of New Zealand highlighting Auckland day trips within 2 hours

Auckland, the city of sails, is a starting point for many visitors as well as being home to nearly one-third of New Zealand’s population. While there are plenty of things to keep one busy in the city, Auckland day trips to nearby destinations offer both a change of scenery and a lot of fun.

We are amongst the nearly 1.7 million people who call Auckland home. And while we love the city, Auckland day trips are often the quick getaway that we need.

Popular day trips from Auckland range from glowworms to geysers, from beaches to caves, and from Māori culture to hobbit holes. We make our Auckland getaways exciting. While many are located in the Auckland region, a number of our favourite places to go are in the Waikato.

While there are plenty of options, we focus on our favourites, which we believe are the best day trips from Auckland. They are all within a two-hour drive from the city. It’s the area highlighted in this map:

First, let us tempt you with some Auckland fun

As American expats who have been living in and exploring NZ for over 20 years, we see things from both a local’s perspective and from that of a visitor. Therefore, we understand what it’s like to come here and have things be similar, but not always exactly what we are used to. We share the information on this page from this perspective.

Auckland Day Trips

Looking for a day-long escape from Auckland, one that's far enough away to feel like somewhere else, but not so far that you can't easily do it in a day? Here are our favourites which include popular day trips from Auckland as well as some that are better known only by locals (like me).

waiheke3 1215114

Waiheke Island

An easy ferry ride from Auckland CBD or Devonport, Waiheke Island is a fabulous subtropical getaway. Many of the lush green rolling hills provide the ideal climate for wine grapes, which accounts for 30 or so wineries on this island.

We like it because it instantly feels like a holiday. Whether we enjoy a meal at a winery or just hand out at one of the several great beaches, we are happy. Of course, if we are feeling more adventurous, there is a massive zipline or an old military reserve to explore.

west auckland 8260297

Muriwai or Piha Beach

Head to the west coast if you are looking for bigger surf waves, black sand beaches, or the nearest subtropical rainforest. Piha is best known from the former TV show Piha Rescue for its wild surf.

Every year (August to March), we get to  Muriwai  to see the large colony of 1,200 Australian gannets that fly over to breed, to swim at the beach, or just enjoy the native bush.

Either beach, we are never disappointed. And when we are feeling more energetic, there is the Te Henga Walkway to Bethels Beach.

tiritiri matangi Tui by Rhonda Albom iPhoto preview

Tiritiri Matangi Island

Tiritiri Matangi is a day of exploration, hiking, and birds. This open bird sanctuary island is just a 75-minute ferry ride from Auckland. Tiritiri Matangi is a protected island paradise thought to be one of the world’s most successful conservation projects.

It's an all-day activity that we love, with a morning ferry heading out from Auckland or Gulf Harbour to the island and an afternoon return. We have seen and photographed some interesting birdlife here.

Motuora Island hike up motuora

Any of the Islands of the Hauraki Gulf

Although there are over 50 islands in the Hauraki, only a handful are accessible without a private boat. Two of our favourites are mentioned already: Tiritiri Matangi and Waiheke.

Two other popular options are Rangitoto and Kawau. Rangitoto Island is Auckland's largest and youngest volcanic field, as well as being home to the country's largest pohutukawa forest.

Kawau was purchased in 1862 by then Governor of New Zealand Sir Geroge Grey. He brought with him interesting animals, and we can still find wallabies there today.

Waipu 1 1

Waipu Caves

Just under a two-hour drive to the north will bring you to the provincial town of Waipu. Here we hit the beach, hike, and the highlight - see glow worms in the caves.

While there are a variety of things to do in Waipu , the caves are our current favourite. Here, you have two great options: either the free DOC cave, where you will most likely get wet feet and possibly a bit dirty, or take a tour through a well-paved cave nearby.

Either way, you should see glow worms, but you will for sure on the tour.

Shakespear Park 6050046

Shakespear Park

Shakespear Park is one of 27 Auckland Regional Parks currently open to the public. Each is special for different reasons. At Shakespear, we enjoy multiple beaches, hours of hiking trails, campgrounds, cows, sheep, and it is an open bird sanctuary.

An award-winning park, it's a great place to relax or stretch your legs. It's just less than an hour's drive from Auckland at the end of the Whangaparaoa Peninsula and the closest of the regional park to our home.

orewa greg 012

Orewa Beach

An easy Auckland day trip, Orewa beach is 3km of golden sand and safe swimming nestled against a charming seaside community well known for its variety of cafes, restaurants, and art galleries.

Only a 25-minute drive, it's also accessible by bus.

4158041

Riverhead Tavern

While one can easily drive to Riverhead from downtown in 30 minutes, I had loads of fun getting here on a 90-minute cruise along the river system leading out from Auckland. Reserve your Red Boats cruise to Riverhead here.

Once there, enjoy a meal at the Landing restaurant or a drink at the Portage, a neighbourhood bar. Best of all, if you can head here on a Sunday, you can enjoy live music at the Boat House.

Karangahake Gorge P4270205 4

Karangahake Gorge

Karangahake Gorge is a majestic mix of remnant goldfields and impressive nature. Once the site of New Zealand’s most lucrative gold strike, it is now a walking and hiking destination.

Swing bridges, former gold mine shafts, a historic cyanide treatment plant, and lush green forest led us to the gorge. Karangahake Gorge is a two-hour drive from the city and makes a great Auckland day trip. You can also reserve a day trip from Auckland with an eBike tour in Karangahake Gorge here .

Hamilton 988px Waikato River in Hamilton Central from Parana Park

Best known for its world-class themed Hamilton Gardens, there are actually a surprising number of cool things to do in Hamilton, New Zealand's fourth-largest city.

A tea plantation, a regional museum, a bird park (where I had a ruru perch on my arm), and Riff Raff Square are a few of my favourites. Hamilton is 125 km southwest of Auckland.

Cambridge nz P3140130

Rural charm and relaxation, Cambridge is the ideal, off-the-beaten-path spot to relax and unwind.

Unless you hit a big sports weekend, as it's home for key rowing and cycling events. It's not too far from Hamilton, so if you are heading out for longer than just typical Auckland day trips, you might consider both.

NZ LOTR Hobbiton Depositphotos 166497594 XL

Hobbiton Movie Set

This is the Real Middle Earth. Hobbiton is a top destination for many Lord of the Rings  fans, and it's just under a two-hour drive.

Available by tour only, each two-hour tour of the 12-acre Hobbiton Movie set takes visitors to Hobbit Holes, the Old Mill, and the Double Arched Bridge.

We discover details about the movie set and how it was created. The tour concludes with a complimentary drink at The Green Dragon Inn. Hobbiton is as touristy as one would expect, yet movie fans love it.

Ngatea Water Garden 4270235 2

Ngatea Water Gardens

Ngatea Water Gardens is an eclectic mix of humour interwoven throughout a beautiful water garden. It requires a sense of humour to appreciate it. We laughed quite a bit.

Also located here is Arthur's Canny Museum. This display of over 11,000 cans is the only one of its kind in New Zealand. Ngatea Water Gardens is about an hour's drive from Auckland.

Auckland day trips a bit farther away

Personally, we prefer to spend at least a night, usually more when we head to any of the destinations below, but we live in New Zealand and therefore have endless time. While they are each more than 2 hours from the Auckland CBD, they all can be done in a day if that's all you have.

Raglan PB230022 1

Raglan is 173 km from Auckland, with a one-way drive time of 2 hourss.

Raglan is a coastal beach town full of surprises. It's got a relaxed atmosphere and I thnk it is the perfect getaway, whether you surf or not.

Located on the west coast of the North Island, it's just a short drive from Hamilton, yet a world apart. With big waves and frequent wind, it's a haven for adrenaline rush, but also a great place to relax with a coffee or craft beer.

coromandel P2240042 1

Coromandel Peninsula

Coromandel is 173 km from Auckland, with a one-way drive time of two hours and twenty minutes.

Bushwalks, forest hikes, natural hot springs, beaches, and a rugged coastline are what attracted us to the Coromandel Peninsula.

If you only have one day, I would recommend digging your own ‘spa’ at the natural hot springs of Hot Water Beach (at low tide) and heading to Cathedral Cove. We like to spend a lot more time here.

4 Waitomo Glowworm Caves Waikato

Waitomo Caves

Waitomo Caves is 190 km from Auckland, with a one-way drive time of 2 hours and 51 minutes.

The caves are lit by thousands of phosphorescent lights from a species of glowworm found only in New Zealand (Arachnocampa luminosa). We haven't done this in a while, but the magic is the same every time.

Entry into the Waitomo Glowworm Caves is via a 45-minute guided tour. Starting on foot, admire stalagmites and stalactites before boarding a small boat and drifting through the glowworm grotto in near silence.

If you are more adventurous, one of the most popular things to do is black water rafting.

Blue Spring Putaruru P3150184

Blue Spring

Blue Spring is located in Putaruru, which is 187 km from Auckland, with a one-way drive time of 2 hours and 40 minutes.

Home to the clearest waters on the North Island, the Blue Spring at Putaruru supplies 70% of New Zealand's bottled drinking water and is one of the most beautiful NZ locations I have ever seen.

Honestly, it's about the view and the photos, so click through and enjoy.

Bonus Destinations: Rotorua and Bay of Islands

Still possible for a long Auckland day trip, we strongly encourage you to spend at least a night in each of these two bonus destinations. Both Rotorua and the Bay of Islands are fabulous, but both are more than three hours in each direction from Auckland.

We know some people recommend them, but we think they are just a bit too far for one day.

Auckland to Rotorua is 228 km, about three hours each way.

A geothermal wonderland and centre for Māori culture, Rotorua is also known for its extreme adventure options. Rotorua is like few other places on the planet and one of my favourite places to visit. If you have the time, spend at least a night here. There is more than enough to do in Rotorua to keep you busy.

If not, a visit to Te Puia will give you the highlights, including Pohutu Geyser, the largest active geyser in the southern hemisphere, erupting once or twice each hour. Te Puia also has bubbling mud pools, hot springs, silica formations, Kiwi birds, and the national schools of wood carving, weaving, stone, and bone carving.

Bay of Islands

Bay of Islands is a 232 km drive north of Auckland, with an over three-hour one-way drive time.

One of my favourite spots for a getaway, I think the Bay of Islands is a bit too far for a day trip. But if that is all you have, you will have to pick from all the things to do in Bay of Islands . If you haven’t been before, I would recommend Waitangi Treaty grounds and getting on a fast boat out to the hole in the rock.

Auckland skyline on a calm day seen from the bridge entrance

See more in a limited time with a tour

Whether you have limited time or you just prefer to have someone do the driving, there are a couple of Auckland day tours we recommend:

Auckland day trip to Hobbiton & Hamilton Gardens

This all-day tour will head first to Hobbiton for a guided exploration of the shire where both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit were filmed. Then, enjoy lunch just outside the farm at the Shire’s Rest Café (lunch is an additional cost). Next, drive to Hamilton and spend time exploring the lovely Hamilton Gardens. Reserve your often discounted Hobbiton and Hamilton Gardens tour here .

Auckland day trip to Hobbiton & Waitomo caves

This one is ideal for people who prefer fully escorted tours, really want to see both Hobbiton and Waitomo Caves, and have only one day for this adventure. It travels first to the Hobbiton Movie Set, then enjoys lunch at The Shire’s Rest Café (a Kiwi-style cafe), before driving to the Glowworm caves in Waitomo.

Both destinations are seen with guided tours. Please note the travel times. You will spend nearly 2/3 of this trip in transit. Reserve your day trip to Hobbiton and Waitomo .

Tips for taking day trips from Auckland

  • The weather is changeable and often unpredictable. It’s always a good idea in Auckland and the surrounding areas to dress in layers and bring a light rain jacket.
  • If you are travelling in summer, bring sunscreen. The hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica thins the atmosphere over New Zealand, making the sun that much more dangerous.
  • Carry water and a small snack. Even if your tour includes meals, they may not happen when you are hungry.
  • Bring a camera.
  • If you have more time,  head north to the top of the island , or head south from  Auckland to the nations capital city .

You are really educating me about New Zealand! There seems to be so much to see and do. Some of these day trips sound amazing!

There is so much to do from Auckland, Rhonda. We only spent a few days there before flying back to the US 2 years ago but I can see from your post how we need to do a few proper trips from there, when we finally return to NZ. The place dazzles. We loved Opotiki so much on the North Island and its well off of the beaten tourist path.

September 11, 2020 at 3:25 pm

There are so many fun things to do around Auckland! I loved visitng Hobbiton (a must for Lord of the Rings lovers). A day on Waiheke Island is also great for wine lovers.

Wow, what a wonderful selection of day trips! There’s a bit of everything! Karangahake Gorge looks like a beautiful place to explore. I also love a trip to some caves! Thanks for the great guide!

Such a detailed post! Love it 🙂 Saving it for the future when I make my way to New Zealand!

September 7, 2020 at 2:38 am

You are so spoiled for choice that it’s almost not fair!! 😉 So many great options here. A visit to Hobbiton is a given, and we’ve read so much about Shakespear Park and Hamilton Gardens that they’re already on our wish list. But we love sailing, so all of the trips to nearby islands would be tops on our list. Well, right after Hobbiton. 😁

September 7, 2020 at 2:28 am

So many great choices! I would love to visit some of these islands and the those caves.

September 6, 2020 at 11:12 pm

Great trips to take from Auckland. would love to visit Hobbiton.

So many amazing things to see for a day trip! This number 2, Karangahake Gorge, looks like from some Indiana Jones movie, stunning. Would love to add that to the list.

Excellent roundup, Rhonda. As a former Aucklander (before I moved to the U.S.A.) I’ve been to all but 2 of those places. Will have to take the boat to the Riverhead Tavern & the ferry to Tiritiri Matangi island next time I’m back in Godzone! Good summary. Thank you. Regards, Roy Stevenson

I always love your posts about New Zealand! It always annoys me though as I realise just how much I missed on my 2 month road trip haha! I love the look of Karangahake Gorge and Shakespear Park is right up my street too. I love green rolling hills! There is so much to do in such a short radius from Auckland!

September 6, 2020 at 1:51 pm

Wow! What awesome surroundings. So many options within a two-hour reach. I loved the gorge and the black sand beach. I hope to get there one day. Truly a beautiful country.

September 6, 2020 at 8:52 am

I want to go to New Zealand sooo badly!!! I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t mainly because of the Lord of the Rings, but it’s also such a GORGEOUS country. It’s truly breathtaking. I’d love to explore all of these spots!

September 6, 2020 at 7:42 am

This is such a great post with SO much information! I absolutely love any posts about day trip options from anywhere since I prefer to hang out in the same spot for awhile and just venture out from there. Waipu Caves looks like a really cool one! Would love to visit one day 🙂

I’ve not been in a cave since I was 20 years old and would love to see Waipu Caves.

Of course I would tour Hobbiton! But the gorge and caves would also be high on my list.

Travel by Example - 15 Best One Day Trips from Auckland

15 Best One Day Trips from Auckland

Auckland is the biggest city in New Zealand. There are many things to see and do in and around the city. In this post we are going to share some of the best one day trips from Auckland.

All of the trips on this list are within 1-2.5 hrs drive from Auckland. Living in Auckland we made lots and lots of one day trips over the years ourselves. Take it from the local – below is the list of 15 Best One Day Trips from Auckland. We are including lots of pics – so that you can get a glance at the places and to make it easier for you to choose which ones to visit.

Waitakere Ranges and West beaches

Let’s start with the iconic west coast beaches less than 1 hour drive from Auckland.

Piha, Muriwai, Te Henga (Bethells) and Karekare are scenic black sand beaches of Tasman Sea on the west coast of Auckland. They are great for walking, nature, views and surfing. Piha and Muriwai are perhaps the most popular of them.

Piha beach, Auckland's west coast

Muriwai beach is a favourite with surfers. It also has a gannet colony with a scenic lookout point above.  Piha beach is loved by surfers too. It features Lyon Rock with a walking track with panoramic views.

Muriwai, New Zealand

West Auckland is also the place of Waitakere Ranges – a regional park with mountain ranges, many walking tracks, streams, waterfalls and wildlife. It’s a good idea to combine west coast beaches and Waitakere Ranges into a day trip from Auckland. As many of the tracks and waterfalls are close to the coast.

There are lots of hiking trails in Waitakere Ranges

Read about some of the Watakere Ranges’s waterfalls in our post about 5 Best Waterfalls near Auckland .

Matakana region

Matakana is just 1 hour drive from Auckland and often mentioned as the home of the Farmers Market popular with the locals. Apart from that, the Mataka region is famous for its vineyards. There are many wineries in the region and some of them offer wine tasting and dining.

Wineries in Matakana region

Also, there are several beautiful beaches nearby, such as Omaha beach and the beach of Tawharanui Regional Park .

Tawharanui Regional Park near Matakana

If you are travelling with kids, visit Matakana Country Park – to enjoy a playground, train rides and feeding farm animals. Make sure to also visit Charlies Gelato ice cream shop (be ready to queue for it in summer – locals love ice cream and this place is always busy in summer (but it’s still totally worth it!)).

Day trips from Auckland - Wine tasting in Matakana

Orewa and Wenderholm Regional Park

Wenderholm Regional Park is one of our favourite places to meet with friends over a barbeque or a picnic by the sea. The park is located on the east coast and is only a 40 min drive from the center of Auckland.

It has a nice quiet beach in a closed bay (great for kids or inexperienced swimmers as it doesn’t get high waves). Lots of green trees and in particular, Pohutukawa, also known as Christmas trees as they bloom with bright red flowers in December. Few walking tracks, one of them leading to a hill with stunning views over the regional park. And Couldrey House & Garden – a historical colonial house (open to visitors only during weekends from 1 to 4pm).

Wenderholm Regional Park

After you visit Wenderholm Regional Park, on the way back to Auckland, stop at Orewa – a small seaside township just north of Auckland. There are few nice cafes and restaurants to have a meal or a drink. The town lies on the Hibiscus Coast – a long strip of beautiful sandy beach popular with holidayers and Aucklanders in any time of the year.

Hibiscus Coast beach, Orewa

Whangaparaoa Peninsula

Not far from Orewa is Whangaparaoa Peninsula . You may combine visiting it with Orewa, or do it as a separate one day trip from Auckland.

There are many beautiful sandy beaches in Whangaparaoa. Stanmore Bay and Big Manly Beach on the north coast of the peninsula are our favourites. Both are good for walking, swimming, paddle boarding and, when weather permits, bodyboarding.

Lots of beautiful beaches on Whangaparaoa peninsula

On the far end of the peninsula is Shakespear Regional Park . That’s our other favourite spot for picnics and barbecues with friends. There is a big green area, few walking tracks, a sandy beach on its southern end and a small waterfall in the park. You will also see lots of pukekos (Australasian birds) and maybe even a peacock or two (they live near the campground in the park).

Shakespear Regional Park, Whangaparaoa

Hunua Ranges

Hunua Ranges Regional Park , 1 hr drive from Auckland, is a native forest park with few lakes, dams, reservoirs and walking tracks.

One of the most popular places to visit in Hunua Ranges is Hunua Falls . It’s a 30 metres high waterfall with a swimming hole at the base.

Best one-day trips from Auckland - Hunua Falls

There are few walking tracks in Hunua Ranges. We recommend a short Hunua Falls Loop Track or a longer (8 km) Cossey-Massey Loop Walk.

Best One Day Trips from Auckland - Hunua Ranges Regional Park

Tip: Hunua Ranges park is half way from Auckland to Karangahake Gorge , so you can continue to Karangahake to combine it into the day trip from Auckland.

Rangitoto Island

Rangitoto Island is a 600 year old volcano in Hauraki Gulf of Auckland. It’s the only destination in our 15 Best One Day Trips from Auckland that is not reachable by car.

To get to Rangitoto you will need to catch a ferry. Ferries depart from either Auckland Downtown Ferry Terminal or Devonport Ferry Terminal. There are a limited number of ferries per day (depending on the season) and it takes around 30 mins to reach the island. Check Fullers website for the timetable and tickets.

Rangitoto island in Hauraki Gulf is seen from many places in Auckland

There are few walking tracks on Rangitoto Island. The most popular one – Rangitoto summit track – takes about 2 hr return. You can also walk around to explore lava fields and a few beaches on the island. Alternatively, you can book a tourist ‘train’ that will take you almost to the top of the volcano, with a short walk to the summit afterwards.

View from the summit of Rangitoto Island

Read about other volcanoes in Auckland in our post 20+ Volcanoes to see in Auckland

Waiheke Island

Another popular island in the Auckland region is Waiheke Island . It’s much bigger than Rangitoto and has permanent residents (and hence, regular ferry services, rental cars and bikes, a township with cafes, stores, etc.).

Visit Waiheke Island for its beautiful beaches, landscapes and wineries!

Waiheke Island, New Zealand

To get to Waiheke Island you can catch either a passenger or a car ferry (going by car gives you the convenience of travelling around the island). It takes approx 40 minutes by ferry. If you don’t want to go by car, there are transport options on Waiheke. You can rent a bike at the island’s ferry terminal. Just keep in mind Waiheke is quite big and hilly, and you’ll have to do a lot of pedalling. Another option is to rent a scooter or a car locally. Or you can use local buses (they run not too often and only take you to a limited number of locations on the island). Or you can buy a ticket to Hop on/off Explorer bus if visiting on Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

Alternatively, you can take one of the wine tasting tours . At least you won’t need to worry about drinking and driving while on Waiheke 🙂

Goat Island

Goat Island is a marine reserve 1-1.5hr drive north of Auckland.

If you like diving, snorkelling or kayaking Goat Island Marine reserve is the place to go. The reserve is protected and there is a lot of marine life in the waters between the beach and the tiny island.

Snorkelling at Goat Island Marine Reserve

You can snorkel right from the beach to see lots of fishes, shells and other marine life. You can rent a wetsuit and snorkelling gear, or a clear kayak, or take a glass bottom boat tour.

There are also few walking tracks in the area and a Discovery center where you can learn about the marine life of New Zealand’s ocean.

Best day trips from Auckland - Goat Island Marine Reserve

Hamilton is the third biggest city in the North Island of New Zealand, and it’s only 1.5 hr drive from Auckland.

Hamilton, New Zealand

The city lies on the banks of Waikato river and has some nice views, green areas, museums and galleries, restaurants and bars. Hamilton hosts an annual Balloons Over Waikato event where you can have a ride in an air balloon or simply enjoy watching them flying above. Hamilton Zoo is a large zoo with a wide range of animals, it’s especially worth visiting when travelling with kids.

Colorful houses of Hamilton city center

Perhaps, the most popular place to visit in Hamilton is Hamilton Gardens . It’s a huge park with more than 20 enclosed gardens, each dedicated to a different civilization, historical era or other topic. Hamilton Gardens are open all year round and the admission is free.

Hamilton Gardens, New Zealand

Next, I’m moving to destinations that are a bit further from Auckland. But they are still within 2-2.5 hr drive, and can be done easily and without rush as one day trips from Auckland.

Waitomo Caves

Waitomo Caves are the furthest from Auckland destination on our list of one day trips. But because visiting the caves only takes a couple of hours, you are still good to do it as a day trip from Auckland. I’d suggest trying to combine it with visiting Hamilton Gardens or perhaps Hobbiton (below).

Also, not far from Waitomo Caves are Marokopa Falls , Piripiri Cave Walk and Mangapohue Natural Bridge – something to see if you are in the area and still have time after visiting the caves.

Ruakuri cave at Waitomo

You can visit Glowworm cave , Ruakiri cave or Aranui cave (or all of them). Each one is spectacular on its own and worth a visit. Another activity you can do there is black water rafting – an underground water adventure through rapids, waterfalls and caves.

Aranui cave at Waitomo

The Hobbiton

The Hobbiton is a filming location of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and ‘The Hobbit’ movies. It’s located in the Waikato region of New Zealand and is about 2 hr drive from Auckland.

Best One Day Trips from Auckland - The Hobbiton

The Hobbiton filming set is located on private land and can only be visited as part of a guided tour. Tours to The Hobbiton depart from ‘The Shire’s Rest’ café and souvenir shop, located at 501 Buckland Road, Matamata. You will get a chance to walk in Hobbiton Village, see Bilbo’s house on the top of the hill and even have a drink at The Green Dragon inn.

Read our dedicated post on Visiting The Hobbiton in Middle Earth .

Karangahake gorge

Karangahake Gorge region is just under 2hrs drive to the south of Auckland. It offers some of the best historical trails, former gold mining sites, gorgeous waterfalls and scenic nature walks.

Historically, the Karangahake Gorge area was known for its gold mining. Nowadays, it conveniently combines its gold mining history with scenic nature that makes it a perfect site for some of the best walks and tracks.

Travel by Example - Karangahake Gorge

Take a Karangahake Gorge Windows Walk through some old gold mining tunnels with ‘windows’ carved through the rocks. Or walk to the summit of Karangahake mountain to enjoy the sweeping views from the top. Visit beautiful Owharoa Falls. Or take a train on the Goldfields Heritage Railway.

Whangarei is a small city in the Northland region of New Zealand. It’s just over 2hr drive from Auckland and it offers lots of things to see for a day trip.

Best one day trips from Auckland - Whangarei

Start with a coffee/snack at the small and cosy town basin by Whangarei Marina . Visit Claphams National Clock Museum – a compact museum with a huge collection of historic clocks and watches. Check out Whangarei Art Museum in the nice interesting building that’s impossible to miss when walking at Whangarei Marina.

Cool building of Whangarei Art Museum

Next drive to Whangarei Falls and take a short 30 min loop track to the base of the waterfall. Then take a forest walk in the Kauri Park nearby to see beautiful New Zealand kauri trees.

Whangarei Falls

In the dry season make sure to also visit Abbey Caves  (in wet season it can be very muddy and flooded in places). There are many other tracks, nature walks, lookouts and beaches in the region. Such as Marsden Point , Whangārei Heads , beautiful long Uretiti Beach and Ocean Beach .

Last two trips on our list are Coromandel Peninsula and Rotorua. We would actually recommend spending more than a day there. Not because of the driving times, but because there is too much to see and do to fit it all into one day. However, we know that sometimes we simply don’t have the luxury of long holidays, but still would like to see as much as possible with the time on hand. Hence, we’re including the next two trips into the list too – you will just have to choose activities and sights you want to see there within a one day trip.

Coromandel Peninsula

Coromandel Peninsula is known for its stunning white sand beaches, scenery and gold-mining history. It takes 1.5 hr to drive from Auckland to Thames (the base of the peninsula and the historic gold-mining area) and about 2.5 hr – from Auckland to Hahei (one of the beach resorts of Coromandel). If you only have one day in Coromandel, here are the places we’d recommend you to visit.

Coromandel peninsula, New Zealand

Thames Goldmine experience – to learn about New Zealand’s gold mining history, try yourself in gold panning and take a guided tour through an old mine. Hot Water beach in low tides – if you fancy to dig a hole in the sand and soak your feet in the warm water that fills the hole. Hahei Beach – for a gold sand beach experience. Stingray Bay – to see stingrays swimming in the water at your feet. Famous Cathedral Cove beach – the filming location of scenes from ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ movie and a simply beautiful beach.

Stingray Bay, Coromandel peninsula

If you still have time, also visit Cooks Beach , Whitianga town and New Chums beach and lookout.

Read our post – Best of the Coromandel in two days.

Whitianga, Coromandel

Rotorua is a town in the geothermal area and it’s a must see destination when in New Zealand. It’s a good idea to spend a night or two, as there is plenty to see and do in Rotorua. However, it’s a 2.5hrs drive from Auckland and is still possible to do as a one day trip from Auckland.

Rotorua, New Zealand

If you only have a day in Rotorua, make sure to visit one of the geothermal parks in the area.

Kuirau Park is a public park in the city (free) with geothermal areas and mud pools. Waiotapu Mud Pool is another free place to visit in Rotorua to see some hot bubbling mud pools.

There are few paid thermal parks in the area too. Such as, Waiotapu Thermal Park , Hell’s Gate Geothermal Reserve and Mud Spa, Orakei Korako Geothermal Park & Cave, and others. You don’t need to visit them all, just pick one or two. It’s a great and interesting experience unique to New Zealand and only a handful of other countries in the world.

Geothermal parks in Rotorua

Read our post on another great place to see hot pools and geysers – 10 Day Road Trip Around Iceland .

Rotorua is also renowned for Maori culture . You can visit a Maori village, museum or Maori art center.

Rotorua Museum building

Additionally, Rotorua is known as an adventure capital of the North Island. Visit Skyline Rotorua for sweeping views and for luge rides . Take a downhill ride in an inflatable ball at ZORB Rotorua. Enjoy a tree walk on suspension bridges in Redwoods. There are really many things to see and do in Rotorua.

That was our list of 15 Best One Day Trips from Auckland. Hope you enjoyed it and got some ideas and inspirations for your next trip to Auckland.

New Zealand is still on our bucketlist. These are some truly amazing day trips. Give us islands, beaches, and wine please. Of course, the Waitomo Caves are a must for us when we visit the region!

Patti was just there in October and fell in love with Auckland. I haven’t been but am looking forward to going – these are very helpful day trips.

It’s great to have so much variety in a relatively close distance to Auckland. All the photos look gorgeous, and black water rafting sounds particularly unique. That’s something I’d really like to try.

9 Best Day Trips from Auckland

By Carl Austin · Last updated on March 4, 2024

Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city, has many things going for it. It’s home to the world’s largest Polynesian population. It’s built on an active basaltic volcanic field – the only such city in the world. It’s got great museums, the southern hemisphere’s largest marina, and a fabulous aquarium.

Still, there’s a lot to appreciate outside the city limits. Great black sand beaches and rainforests are easily accessible on day trips from Auckland. You can also drift down an underground river illuminated by glow worms. Oh, the scenery outside of Auckland is pretty spectacular, too.

9. Matakana

Matakana

New Zealand produces some nice wines and what better place to sample them than the vineyard. Matakana is home to more than 30 wineries where you can taste the fruits of the vine. Matakana also is a good place to sample local produce, perhaps buying the fixings for a picnic on a nearby beach.

At the Saturday farmer’s market you can buy foods, including local cheeses and fresh baked breads, direct from the farmers, as well as pick up locally made handicrafts. You’ll also find quaint villages on your day exploring the Matakana coast.

Getting to Matakana

  • Just under an hour’s drive north of Auckland, Matakana is very easy to visit by car. Simply hop on State Highway 1 and follow it to Warkworth, where you turn off and follow signs to Matakana. From here, there are a number of nice beaches worth visiting, such as Tawharanui and Snells; these are only a short drive away.
  • As the area produces a lot of great wines and local foods, an excellent way to see Matakana is to take a guided tour of its wineries and chocolate factory, where you’ll get to taste some delicious samples. In addition to this, tours also take you to the impressive Brick Bay Sculpture Park and to a honey center, where you can sample honey wine.

8. Coromandel Peninsula

Coromandel Peninsula

On a clear day, you can see the Coromandel Peninsula from Auckland 55 km (34 miles) away, but a day trip there will be a lot more fun. The picturesque peninsula is named after the British navy ship that stopped there in 1820 for supplies. Today, it’s one of New Zealand’s hottest travel destinations, especially if you’re an ecotourist, yachter or scuba diver.

A popular destination is Cathedral Cove (an arch through a limestone cliff looks like a cathedral), but it’s only accessible by foot or boat. You can also go offshore canoeing, walk through a rainforest or on white sand beaches.

Getting to the Coromandel Peninsula

  • Jutting out into the Hauraki Gulf, Coromandel Peninsula is about a two and a half hour drive from the center of Auckland. First, head south on State Highway 1 to Pokeno, where you turn off onto the 2. After following this for a while, continue on to the 25 and follow it to Kopu. From here, you can either drive up the west coast of the peninsula or continue on past Coromandel Forest Park to the east coast and Cathedral Cove – one of the most popular places to visit on the peninsula. The scenery is beautiful wherever you go; by car, you can stop off at any of the lovely sights you come across on your drive, with Hot Water Beach being another popular spot to head to.
  • To see as much in one day as possible, many people decide to take a guided tour to the peninsula. Along with visits to Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach, tours also take you on a lovely railway ride to a viewing platform, which offers up stunning panoramas of the Hauraki Gulf.

7. Bay of Islands

Bay of Islands

If you come to see spectacular scenery in New Zealand , the Bay of Islands won’t disappoint you. With 141 islands, it’s easy to see why Captain Cook, the bay’s first European visitor, named the islands Bay of Islands in 1769. It’s one of the most popular sailing and fishing destinations in New Zealand.

If you have time, take a boat ride out into the bay following the historical “cream” route that brought cream from the islands to town. Russell, a quick ferry ride from Pahia, is worth a side trip, if only to visit the cemetery with its quaint tombstones.

Getting to the Bay of Islands

  • As it is quite a distance away, the best way to visit the Bay of Islands is by taking a guided tour; this will help you make the most of your time there. After a scenic three-hour bus journey to Paihia, you’ll visit the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, see a Maori war canoe and a beautiful meeting house, before exploring the charming town of Russell. With a professional guide on hand, you’ll learn a lot about the fascinating Maori history and culture, as well as how New Zealand was founded.

Muriwai

With its 50 km (30 miles) of unbroken beach, this black sand beach is one of the most popular beaches near Auckland, extending up to the Tasman Sea coast. Surfing is the most popular activity here, but you can also go hang gliding, fishing, “bush hiking” on a boardwalk or paragliding.

Because the sand is so firm, you can also drive on the beach. You’ll also not want to miss the gannet colony on the steep cliffs at the southern end of the beach.

Getting to Muriwai

  • Located on the west coast of North Island, Muriwai is a 45-minute drive from the center of Auckland; in no time at all, you’ll find yourself overlooking the glorious coastline that borders the Tasman Sea. Simply head west on State Highway 16 and turn off at Waimaku, where you’ll see signs pointing you to Muriwai. On the drive back to Auckland, you could stop off at one of the area’s fantastic vineyards to sample some local produce.
  • Many people who visit Muriwai opt to take a guided tour. These enable you to taste and learn about some of the surrounding area’s delicious wines, while also visiting the landscapes’ many impressive viewpoints. Walking along Black Sand Beach is just one of the many highlights that the tour offers.

5. Waitakere Ranges

Waitakere Ranges

Waitakere Ranges is a good place to savor the outdoors while breathing in some fresh Kiwi air. Administered by the Auckland Council, this regional park has much to tempt the recreationalist in you. There are plenty of rainforest walking and hiking trails, including the Hillary Trail for the more adventuresome.

Some walks, like Kitekite Track, are suitable for the whole family. You can also swim in a pond underneath one of the park’s pretty waterfalls, go fishing, or tramp along the black sand beaches. The waves are good for surfing.

Getting to the Waitakere Ranges

  • Lying to the southwest of Auckland, the beautiful Waitakere Ranges are just a half hour drive from the city. From the center of town, head west on State Highway 16 before turning off onto Ash St and following it as it turns into Titirangi Road. After a while, this turns into the aptly named Scenic Drive, which will take you all the way to the Arataki Visitor Centre – the gateway to the park. After exploring the spectacular Waitakere Ranges, you could drive 20 minutes further on to Karekare Beach – one of the most beautiful beaches in the region.
  • To gain a greater understanding and appreciation of the area’s diverse fauna and flora and incredible landscapes, many visitors take an eco-tour with a professional guide. As well as exploring the wonders of Waitakere Ranges, tours also take you to the majestic Black Sand Beach.

4. Waiheke Island

Waiheke Island

Waiheke Island, the second largest and most populated island in the Gulf of New Zealand, has been getting a lot of media attention in recent years. In 2016, Lonely Planet named it the world’s fifth best travel destination while Conde Nast named it the world’s fourth best island to visit.

Accessible by ferry from Auckland, Waiheke Island has several nice beaches, including Oneroa and Cactus. Should you tire of beach activities, you might want to visit Stony Batter, World War II fortifications or an outdoor sculpture display known as Heartland: Sculpture on the Gulf.

Getting to Waiheke Islamd

  • From the Downtown Ferry Terminal in Auckland, there are a number of ferries that you can catch to Waiheke Island; the journey should only take around 40 minutes. It is a very scenic ride through the Tamaki Strait, and once you arrive on the island, you can take a bus or taxi.
  • If you want to sample Waiheke’s culinary delights, you may want to take a food and wine tour to the island. Alongside the fantastic wine and oil tastings and lunch that take place at various picturesque estates and vineyards, a bus pass is also included, so you can explore the rest of the island’s delights at your own leisure.

3. Waitomo Caves

Waitomo Caves

Drifting down an underground river through limestone caves is an adventure not to be missed, especially if it’s the Waitomo Caves. This is how most tourists will visit the caves. Don’t like black water rafting? You can also walk through parts of the cave system; extreme sports enthusiasts can cave crawl through more difficult caves.

What makes Waitomo Caves so special is the lighting system: gazillions of glow worms. You’ll also see stalactites and stalagmites, but it’s the glow worms that will grab your attention.

Getting to the Waitomo Caves

  • Lying almost 200 kilometers to the south of Auckland, the amazing Waitomo Caves are very easy to get to by public transport. Buses departing from Auckland Central take just under three hours to get to the caves. The bus passes through some lovely countryside, and on the way, you’ll learn a lot about the history and culture of New Zealand thanks to the informative commentary.
  • It is just as easy to reach the caves by car; all you need to do is drive in a straight line south. Head out of the city on State Highway 1 and keep going until you reach Taupiri, where you then continue on the 39. Just after Otorohanga, you should see signs pointing you to the spectacular glowworm caves. All in all, this should take around two and a half hours. The nearby Marokopa Falls and Mangapohue Natural Bridge are well worth visiting when you’re in the area.
  • Yet another option to visit Waitomo Caves is to take a guided tour. With stops at a working farm and a local arts and crafts institute included, alongside a visit to the geysers and hot springs of Rotorua, it is a great way to see as much of this beautiful part of New Zealand as is possible in one day.

Rotorua

Drive three hours southeast of Auckland, and you’ll approach Rotorua. Settled by Maoris in the 14th century, Rotorua is a major tourist draw in North Island. It’s best known for its Maori culture and geothermal activity , including geysers and hot mud pools, since it’s on a caldera. (Some of the hot springs smell pretty bad because of high sulfur content.)

It gets its name from nearby Lake Rotorua, one of 17 lakes in the region. Rotorua has been a tourist spa since the 1800s because of the curative powers of its natural hot springs. Government Gardens is also worth a visit.

Getting to Rotorua

  • Although Rotorua is a three-hour drive away, the journey will pass by in no time at all as you marvel at all the amazing landscapes you pass on the way. To get there, head south out of Queensland on State Highway 1 before turning off onto the 2. When this merges into the 27, simply keep going straight and follow it until Matamata, where you turn off onto the 28. The final stretch of the journey is completed on State Highway 5; this takes you straight to the awe-inspiring Rotorua.
  • A great way to see both Rotorua and the glittering glowworms of Waitomo Caves in just one day is to take a guided tour; these often combine the two together. In addition to this, guests also get to visit a working farm and a Maori Arts and Crafts Institute to learn more about life in the country.

1. Hobbiton Movie Set

Hobbiton Movie Set

If you’re a fan of J.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings and Hobbit, you’ll definitely want to take a day trip from Auckland to the Home of Middle-earth at Hobbiton Movie Set. More than 150 locations in New Zealand were used to film the two movie series, but a significant number were filmed at Hobbiton Movie Set on a family farm near Hamilton.

Movie officials picked this site because it reminded them of ancient England. The set is available through guided tours, which must be booked in advance. You’ll visit sets such as hobbit holes and Bagshot Row.

Getting to the Hobbiton Movie Set

  • Just over two hours away by car, the Hobbiton Movie Set is very simple to drive to. On the way, you’ll pass through some lovely scenery. To start off, head south out of Auckland on State Highway 1. Just before Pokeno, turn off onto the 2. After a while, this turns into State Highway 27, then you merely have to follow this all the way south until you see signs directing you to the Hobbiton Movie Set just past Matamata. Make sure you book a tour beforehand, as only visitors on a guided tour are allowed to visit.
  • As you have to take a tour to visit Hobbiton, many people opt to take a combi tour and combine it with a trip to the Waitomo Caves to see the glittering glowworms. With a professional guide on hand, you’ll learn about the countryside you travel through as well as the history and culture of New Zealand.

8 Of The Best Day Trips From Auckland You Need To Tick Off In 2024

By Grace Noles

25th Jan 2024

Rear View Of Woman Looking At Sea Against Sky in Maraetai.

No matter how great the City of Sails is, there’s always the impulse to hop in the car and head out of Auckland on a road trip… it’s part of our DNA.

Whether you want to unwind in nature, have an adventure or soak in the sights before stopping for something to eat and drink, we have it all at our fingertips.

Here are eight epic day trips from Auckland for you to tick off one by one.

Elevated wide angle looking down over Puhoi historic village and valley, late afternoon sun, autumn. Puhoi is one of the best day trips you can take from Auckland.

Head 50km north of Auckland city to historic and beautiful Puhoi. Immerse in nature with a stroll via the Puhoi Domain to the Puhoi Lookout Loop Track . The forty-minute loop climbs through native bush (via a detour due to damage to the swing bridge) to a lookout and memorial tribute to Puhoi resident, Arthur Dunn. It’s part of the famed Te Araroa Track, one of the longest tramps in the world.

Alternatively (or additionally if you’re keen to pack in the adventure), you can hire a kayak and take a gentle ride down the river to Wenderholm, a gorgeous beach and Pohutukawa grove with historic sites of its own like the Wenderholm homestead and gardens.

If shopping is more your thing, there are a couple of speciality stores to explore. The Slow Water Trading Post sells Native American treasures or, head to the Puhoi Village Market— 2024 dates here —for fresh produce, coffee, bread, cakes, olive oil and so much more. There are also plenty of craft items for sale, including jewellery, soaps, knitting and beauty products.

No day trip from Auckland to Puhoi is complete without living your best country gent/lady dreams with a few cheeky scones and cups of tea at the  Puhoi Cottage Tea Rooms . Grab a possie outside by the river or in the lovely cottage and get ready to raise those pinkies. Delicious.

The Sculptureum Experience is made up of three sculpture gardens and six art galleries spanning over 1.5km of flat paths. There is also a vineyard, function centre and the aptly titled bar and restaurant, Rothko.

A little further up the road, head to the Matakana Farmers' Market  and shop up a storm. At these markets, you can find unique, one-of-a-kind handmade treasures, as well as iconic Kiwi eats like whitebait and paua fritters. Fill your shopping bag with artisan cheese, homemade bread, honey, fresh produce, deli treats, and sugary nibbles and head to the beach for a gourmet picnic.

Matakana Village is an eight-minute drive from one of the most popular beaches in the region, Omaha. The white sand beach has clear blue water, and a dolphin guest every now and then, making it the perfect spot to snack on your market offerings and watch the waves for some friendly visitors.

Head back into town and you’ll find a collection of Matakana shops open all year round. Browse for hours through the beauty and tonic stores, home and design shops, and art galleries unique to Matakana.

Spend the rest of the day wandering Sculptureum  (pictured above), the New Zealand-famous gallery and gardens with colourful creative artwork from all parts of the globe. The outdoor art gardens are second to none and the winery next door is an added bonus.

A trip to Matakana is never complete without a real fruit ice cream. End the day with a pit stop at Charlies Gelato  on the way back to town, for your fresh gelato fix—no wonder they've made our list of Auckland's best ice cream .

The stunning entrance to the Ruakuri cave in Waitomo.

Stalagmites or stalactites? Bring back those memories from high school science class and drive two-and-a-half hours south of Auckland to the Waitomo Caves . These spectacular caves with glow worms will have you oo-ing and ah-ing in amazement.

The Waitomo Glow Worm Tour takes you on a boat after walking through several impressive caves, under the luminescent ceilings. It’s a tick-off-the-bucket list deal, seeing the galaxy of glow worms in their natural habitat.

Alternatively, take the impressive spiral staircase down to the Ruakuri Cave , a vast cave naturally decorated with limestone formations, waterfalls, and glow worms.

If you prefer something a little more adventurous, Waitomo Caves is full of experiences. Take your pick between black water rafting , or really up the ante with this five-hour black water experience .

All this adventuring is sure to build up your appetite, so hit up HUHU Cafe for some of the best eats in town. The sleek interior overlooks the Waitomo Village, with a cosy wood fire in winter, or an open-air deck in summer. Choose from a set dining menu, or graze to your liking from the standard lunch menu. Each dish has a wine to match, as well as Huhu’s collection of boutique New Zealand beers and ciders to choose from.

After lunch, take a relaxing stroll around any one of Waitomo’s scenic walks. The options are endless. From the Waitomo Walkway  outlining the famous limestone formations to the Waikawau Tunnel —hewn through the rock by men with picks and shovels back in 1911—with white cliffs and is the only route to access the beautiful Waikawau Beach.

People look at the stalls at The Shed Collective in Oratia.

Another market to hit and this time out west is the Oratia Farmers' Market  each Saturday morning. Here you'll find delicious fresh, local produce including pies, pastries, cheeses, seasonal fruits, oysters, bread, meats, and organic locally roasted coffee. Brunch is sorted, and you’ll be able to stock up the pantry for the week ahead.

Once done, make sure you go back on the main road and visit Just Plane Interesting , which is filled with second-hand goods that are, yes, just plain interesting. You’ll find weird and wonderful treasures from retro decor to old army uniforms. There’s even a dark mysterious room, home to a mummy if you’re brave enough.

After your visit, stretch those legs with a hike through the Waitakere Ranges . The hills run along Piha, Muriwai, Te Henga, and Karekare filled with hidden natural gems along the way, just be sure to follow the latest advice before setting out on the track of your choice, as some have been closed due to kauri dieback. Here are some of our favourite walks around Auckland.

Tackle one of the harder hikes, or take things a bit slower and beach hop the black sand coast. End the day with a bite to eat at one of Piha’s legendary eateries, or take a short drive up to Riverhead and claim a table at NZ's oldest riverside pub  The Riverhead  for stunning sunset views.

The Landing Restaurant is the venue’s restaurant, with tables on the deck above the river. The menu is comprised of fresh, seasonal dishes. Everything is made from scratch at the down-to-earth gastropub. Choose from one of the Riverhead’s famed dishes such as the Riv’ Ribs coated in smokey BBQ sauce, or if you're plant-based you'll be thrilled to find an entire section of the menu dedicated to vegetarian and vegan tastes.

Karangahake Gorge

Water rushing over rocks at the fantastic Karangahake Gorge.

A slice of magic just two hours south of Auckland, Karangahake Gorge is filled with cliff faces with sheer drops, native bush, gushing waterfalls and the mighty Ohinemuri River. The gorge has multiple bush walks, each with a different unique aspect.

The Windows Walk trail leads you through the gold-mining trail dating back to the 1880s, including remains of the old Talisman Battery Plant. Or, venture deep down into the Karangahake Tunnels which take you along the old underground railway track used for mining back in the day. Pro tip: take a torch. Cool off after your walk with a visit to  Owharoa Falls , a stunning staircase waterfall in the gorge. The scenic spot is accessible from the road.

After learning some gold mining history and discovering all the secret spots in the gorge, make a beeline to Bistro at The Falls Retreat for a bite to eat. The Falls is a retreat from busy city living, with a relaxed and elegant setting. The menu changes seasonally, with ingredients coming straight out of The Fall’s very own veggie garden, as well as eggs fresh from their chickens.

Their flavour-packed wood-fired pizza is famous in the region, with flavours such as BBQ chicken, pickled jalapenos and sundried tomatoes, or daily catch, shrimp, smoked salmon with parsley and caper gremolata. The entire menu is diverse with a dish to suit every palate and picky eater.

Maraetai Beach near Duder Regional Park is seen completely empty at sunrise.

Technically still in Auckland (it’s the most eastern town), Maraetai has a stunning beach to soak in the rays and have a splash in the water. With the equally awesome Duder Regional Park nearby, the beach stretches six kilometres along the Pohutakawa Coast, so you’ll be sure to find a space along the golden sand.

The water is crisp and clear, with the perfect set-up for wharf jumping at the west end of the beach. After a sunbath and dip, you’re faced with the dilemma of where to eat. Maraetai is spoilt for choice. Cross the road and take your pick from the local cafes or a fish and chip offering if you’re heading back to the water. Otherwise, take a short drive up the road to Beachlands where you’ll find the Beachlands shops.

Home to The Franklin from the owners of the beloved Marina Cantina and Grangers, The Franklin is a modern taphouse and kitchen pub. They do small plates, sharing platters, pub classics, and burgers n’ dogs. As well as wood-fired pizzas from Friday to Sunday. The menu is never-ending, with an extensive drinks menu to complement it. After filling your belly, take the scenic backroads to Clevedon.

The Clevedon Village Farmers' Markets brings in visitors from near and far. The market has everything from fresh fish and poultry to German pretzels and pastries. With more 60 stalls, you can spend hours filling your bag with fresh produce to take home and graze on for days. It is open on Sundays from 8.30am to 1pm.

Someone holds up amazing-looking doughnuts with a cake in the foreground.

Brave the wild winds and oceans and head West to Muriwai for a fun day out. The towering cliffs pump adrenaline through your body as you walk along the coastline. Pop into the delicious  Muriwai Deli  for some next-level eats then catch some waves at the surf beach, or bake under the sun—just remember to stay protected under the hot New Zealand ozone.

The sweeping black sand beach also has a little estuary to dip your toes in if the ocean is too wild and there are caves to explore, too. The famous Gannet Colony  resides at Muriwai, with hundreds of white, black, and orange birds nesting there between August and March each year. They’ll be hard to miss. While the track is temporarily closed due to cyclone damage you can still marvel at the masses in their natural habitat before claiming a spot at the black sand beach.

If you want another way to see the entire stretch, take a trek along the beach on horseback. Muriwai is known for its horse-riding trips . Sun on your face, wind in your hair, it’ll offer a whole new perspective of the West Coast.

Once you’ve built up an appetite, take a short trip to Waimauku near Kumeu and drop by the lush 80-acre estate  The Hunting Lodge . With a huge garden to enjoy during the warmer months with regular events held at the cellar door and lawn bar, you can snuggle up for a feast to remember in the historic villa during wintertime. An experience you won't forget.

Two people with their surfboards on Ngarunui Beach.

Head south until you hit Raglan. It’s high on the must-do list for surfers, but it’s not just about the incredible breaks because there’s plenty to do in this little town.

The first stop is the Te Toto Gorge Lookout . Take it nice and slow as you drive up the narrow gravel path before reaching the car park. From there it’s a short walk up to the viewing platform where you’ll see breathtaking views of the Tasman Sea and a towering cliff drop below. If you’re up for a swim, this may not be the place.

Luckily, Ngarunui Beach is just a short drive from the gorge. Another black sand beach on the list, but just as amazing. The waves are perfect to give surfing a go or have a quick dip close to shore. The sunsets are second to none at Ngarunui, with the sun slowly creeping behind the cliffs and turning the Tasman Sea a deep shade of orange.

If you’re feeling peckish, swing by the Rock-It Kitchen on Wainui Road for a rustic dining experience. The cafe is set up in an old woodshed, but don’t let that deter you—its modern makeover is an Instagrammer’s dream. Take your pick of the indoor booths, deck tables, or lawn seats to enjoy your meal. Rock-It Kitchen has a lunch and dinner menu, both packed with organic and seasonal dishes.  The menu has plenty of gluten-free and vegetarian options as well as the infamous Raglan Roast Coffee for the strong brew.

Make the final stop of the day at Bridal Veil Falls . The 55m high waterfall cascades to look like a bride's veil, and is one of the most scenic spots in Raglan. Take a short walk to the viewing platform above the falls, or venture down the staircase to the (not swimmable) pool at the bottom. Can't bear to leave? Check out these rad accommodation options in town.

Islands Near Auckland – Hauraki Gulf

The Hauraki Gulf is framed by Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour in the west, the Hauraki Plains to the south, the protruding Coromandel Peninsula in the east, and the Barrier Islands to the north. For those with a little more time, we’ve covered nine great islands near Auckland in this detailed article . However, if you’ve only got a couple of days for the whole region, then Waiheke and Rangitoto might be for you.

1. Waiheke Island

Waiheke Island

Waiheke Island is on the top of every visitor’s list of places to visit near Auckland. It’s a 40-minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland across the sparkling Waitemata Harbour and a world away from big city living. It is frequently voted by Lonely Planet, Travel & Leisure Magazine, and many other international travel experts as one of the top island escapes in the world. There is a public bus network, a hop-on-hop-off bus, bike rentals and car rentals available which makes getting around the island so easy.

You will find sandy, pristine beaches, lined with the unique New Zealand Pohutukawa trees which bloom with rich red flowers at Christmas time. Becuase of this, these iconic Kiwi trees are also known as the New Zealand Christmas trees.

You will find sandy, pristine beaches, lined with the unique New Zealand Pohutukawa trees which bloom with rich red flowers at Christmas

One of the best things to do on Waiheke Island is to visit a boutique vineyard. These vineyards offer stunning views, wine tasting rooms, and restaurants where you can linger over a long lunch featuring delicious local and seasonal produce. Try Cable Bay and Mudbrick vineyards which are both walking distance from the ferry terminals. There is an information desk at the ferry terminal on Waiheke Island and they will help you with what’s on and where to go.

There is a great network of walking tracks throughout the Waiheke Island and around its 40km coastline, showcasing New Zealand’s flora and fauna. You can also rent a kayak, go mountain biking, or ziplining through the trees if you want some action.

Waiheke Island was once regarded as having a bohemian hippy lifestyle and still has many interesting art studios to visit. We suggest the interesting outdoor Sculpture Exhibition located on a walking trail that takes place every two years in February or March. There is also a very popular jazz festival which takes place over Easter.

2. Rangitoto Island

On your ferry trip to Waiheke Island, you’ll pass one of Auckland’s best-known landmarks, Rangitoto Island. It’s a large symmetrical, green, cone-shaped island that is actually a volcano!

Did you know that Auckland is built on a volcanic field of over 50 volcanoes? The last eruption in Auckland was Rangitoto over 600 years ago. Scientists consider these volcanoes to be dormant, rather than extinct, so there is an extremely slim chance of any of them erupting in the near future.

Did you know that Auckland is built on a volcanic field of over 50 volcanoes? The last eruption in Auckland was Rangitoto over 600 years ago

Rangitoto Island is a 25-minute ferry ride from Downtown Auckland or a two-hour kayaking trip from Auckland’s North Shore. The island was declared “pest-free” in 2011 and birdlife has flourished. It is home to dozens of sea, shore and forest birds.

There is no shop on the island, so you will need to bring your own food and drink. There are also no rubbish bins, so you will need to take your own scraps and rubbish off the island with you.

The most popular walking track is the Rangitoto Summit Track. It is an easy, but up-hill, two-hour return walk on well-formed paths along the lava fields. The Wreck Bay Track is a twisting track to Wreck Bay and Boulder Bay on the northern side of Rangitoto. These bays were once used as dumping grounds for old ships and at low tides, some of the remains can still be seen.

Another popular track is the Coastal Walk from Rangitoto Wharf to Islington Bay, which passes by boatsheds and some old 1930s baches (classic New Zealand holiday cottages) one of which is open as a museum. The track passes old quarry sites, ruins of wartime storage bases for mines, and Yankee Wharf which was built during World War II.

Be careful not to miss your ferry ride back to Auckland as there is no overnight accommodation on the island. A water taxi back to Auckland can be quite expensive.

Another very amazing island about an hour’s plane ride from Auckland is Great Barrier Island . It is one of the few places in the world with a ‘Dark Sky Sanctuary’ rating.

The Waikato Region – South of Auckland

These following two tourist attractions near Auckland can be combined into a one-day trip if you have limited time. You would need to leave Auckland before 7am, book a morning tour at Hobbiton and then head 1 hour and 15 minutes over to Waitomo for the afternoon. It would be a very busy day but is doable if necessary.

3. Hobbiton

Hobbiton - South of Auckalnd

Fans of the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies visit Hobbiton in their masses. It is the third-largest tourist attraction in New Zealand.

Hobbiton is in a small rural town called Matamata about a two-hour drive from Auckland. In 1995 Peter Jackson, the director of the films, spotted the Alexander family farm in Matamata as an ideal location for some of his filming and work began. The New Zealand army was called in to build a road to the site. The original set was just a temporary build, but in 2010 it was rebuilt permanently as “The Hobbit – An Unexpected Journey.”

Today you can do a tour of Hobbiton and experience the real middle earth! Take a look at Bagshot Row, Bilbo’s Bag End, the Party Tree, 44 hobbit holes and have a pint at The Green Dragon Pub. It is recommended that you book your tour in advance so that you don’t arrive at the Shire’s Rest and have to wait for a vacancy in a tour group. It gets really busy here in the high season.

4. Waitomo Caves

Waitomo Cave

Located beneath rolling green hills about 1 hour and 15 minutes from Hobbiton at the famous Waitomo Caves. These caves were created over 30 million years ago while the region was still under the ocean. There are about 300 known limestone caves in the area, and possibly more to be discovered.

There are several caving organizations that offer different experiences. Choose from a walking tour, a boat tour, a black water rafting tour, an abseiling tour, and even a ziplining tour.

The most popular tour is the Waitomo Glowworm Caves. It has a huge cavernous space where you can see the amazing limestone stalagmite and stalactite formations. The trip finishes with a silent boat ride in the dark, with thousands of illuminating glowworms sparkling overhead.

The Ruakuri Cave and Aranui Cave are also very popular options to visit too.

Beaches Near Auckland – The Rugged West Coast

The rugged black sand beaches on Auckland’s West Coast are some of the most unique and stunning places to visit near Auckland. We always take our overseas visitors to one or both of these beaches and they are always super impressed.

5. Piha Beach

Piha Beach - Auckland West Coast

You essentially leave Auckland behind as you pass the arty Titirangi Village located about 20 minutes southwest of the city. From there is another half-hour drive to Piha Beach on the rugged west coast.

You will reach Piha Beach by taking the Scenic Drive route. It’s a narrow road that winds its way over hills and through the green fern-laden rainforests of the Waitakere Ranges.

Along the way to Piha Beach, you can make a quick stop at the Arataki Visitors Centre. It is located in the middle of New Zealand’s native bush at the peak of a hill. Here you can get great views and learn about the cultural, colonial and natural history of the area.

Just before you reach Piha Beach there’s a left turn to Karekare Beach. This is where many scenes from the film “The Piano” were shot in the 1990s. Karekare Beach is another very rugged black sand beach with huge rolling surf.

As you drive down to the black sands of Piha Beach you will get great views of the entire coastline. The iconic Lion Rock landmark divides the beach into a northern and southern half. If you’re up for a hike, you can climb the steep trail to the top of Lion Rock for an awesome view of the beach where surfers challenge the huge waves below.

6. Muriwai Beach

Muriwai Beach - Auckland West Coast

Muriwai Beach stretches for 60 kilometers along the dramatic Tasman Sea with huge ocean swells and rolling breakers. This windswept, black sand beach is situated on Auckland’s west coast, about a one hour drive from the city through farmland, vineyards, and small rural towns.

While Muriwai Beach is a popular spot for surfing and windsurfing, it is also renowned for its large gannet colony. Viewing platforms located atop of the cliffs at the southern end of the beach offer close up views of these huge birds. Gannets weigh about two and a half kilos and have a wingspan of around two meters. From August to March about 1200 pairs of Gannets mate, nest and have their chicks on these windswept clifftops. You can normally see the chicks throughout December and January.

There is no public transport to Muriwai Beach so you will need a car or take a West Coast tour to get here. The last 15 minutes of the drive the beach goes down a narrow and winding section of road through native bush. Near the end of the road, opposite the local café, is a left turn that takes you up to the carpark. This is where the walking track to the Gannet Colony viewing platform begins.

New Zealand’s Thermal Area

Three hours south of Auckland is the not-to-be-missed geothermal area around Rotorua. There are so many unique things to do in this area. You won’t forget the unique smell! Rotorua has been called ‘The Sulphur City’ because it has a unique pungent aroma that smells very much like rotten eggs, but you do become accustomed to it over time!

Rotorua - Thermal Region

Rotorua is situated on the southern shore of Lake Rotorua. Lakes and streams are abundant in the area, while trout fishing and white water rafting are a few activities that you may wish to take part in.

Rotorua is most famous for its geothermal activity. Hot springs, bubbling mud pools, and spouting geysers can be seen at various parks and locations around the area. A few popular attractions are the Pohutu Geyser at Whakarewarewa, the Waiopu Thermal Wonderland, and the Waimangu Volcanic Valley.

Other must-visit places are the Rotorua Polynesian Spa which was voted as a Top 10 World Day Spa by Conde Nast Traveller, the Rainbow Springs Kiwi Wildlife Park where you can see a live kiwi, the Rotorua Agradome for an entertaining farm show, the magnificent Redwoods at Whakarewarewa Forest. So Many Places! So Little Time!

8. Matakana Village Farmer’s Market & Goat Island Marine Reserve

Goat Island Marine Reserve - North of Auckland

The Matakana Village Farmer’s Market is a great spot to visit on a Saturday morning. Matakana is about one hour north of Auckland. It is a quaint village with interesting boutique stores, art galleries, and a great little cinema complex.

The Farmer’s Market is laden fresh organic food. It sells a wonderful array of tasty foods like fresh oysters, the prawn tacos, homemade bread, local cheese, honey, and chutney. You can sit by the river, listen to live music and enjoy whitebait, paua or mussel fitters and a great cup of coffee!

8 Top-Rated Day Trips from Auckland

Written by Jess Lee Dec 23, 2019 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Auckland sits in the north of New Zealand's North Island, a prime position for sightseeing trips to both the gorgeous beaches and coastal scenery of the far north and excursions to the geological attractions of the island's central region. For those on a short visit to New Zealand, it's entirely viable to see a decent chunk of the country's premier sights while being based solely in Auckland .

The world-famous Waitomo caves and geothermal wonders of Rotorua and Taupo are all possible to visit on long day trips as is the country's newer Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit movie-set highlights that have brought film fans flocking to the country in recent years.

Closer to home, Waiheke Island provides a nature-filled break from city life just a stone's throw from Auckland itself, proving that even in New Zealand's most populous center, you're never too far from the country's bounty of natural beauty. Be sure to refer often to our list of the top-rated day trips and fun things to do that are an easy drive from Auckland.

2. Waitomo Caves

3. bay of islands, 4. hobbiton film set, 5. waiheke island, 6. coromandel peninsula, map of day trips from auckland.

Rotorua

Geysers and bubbling mud geothermal areas, hot pools for soaking in, and plenty of Maori culture-the town of Rotorua is one of the most interesting places to explore in New Zealand and showcases the country's unique natural beauty.

About 238 kilometers from Auckland, this is a hugely active geothermal area, and the surrounding attractions of Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland , Hell's Gate, and the Whakarewarewa Valley have a medley of bizarrely colored steaming lakes, pools of bubbling mud, and exploding geysers that amaze all who visit.

Rotorua also is one of New Zealand's major centers of Maori culture and a great place to learn about the country's indigenous people.

You can visit the town and attractions on a Rotorua Day Trip from Auckland , which includes hotel pickup and drop-off, transportation, lunch, and a guide. You'll visit the geothermal attractions and stop at the Maori Arts and Craft Cultural Institute in Te Puia.

After a long day, Rotorua also has a soothing last stop before heading back on the long drive to Auckland: the town is home to plenty of hot springs, perfect for an hour of relaxation and easing aching joints with a soak. Better still, book a night at a resort close to the thermal springs.

Waitomo Caves

New Zealand is all about packing plenty of action and adventure into your holiday, and the country is well-known for its active pursuits. The country's most famous caving destination is within easy reach of Auckland, about 195 kilometers away, and provides experiences for both adrenaline-junkies and those seeking a more sedate experience. The Waitomo Caves are a series of deep subterranean caverns well-known for their glow worms, which provide a fairy-light backdrop to every visit.

The caves are also renowned for the black water rafting activities available to thrill-seekers here within the caverns. For an easygoing day out, you can simply take the boat ride through the glowworm caves and then walk through the caverns of Ruakuri and Aranui Caves . To add plenty of splash to the day, opt to go black water rafting through Ruakuri Cave's extensive subterranean system afterwards.

A great option is a combo Hobbit Movie Set and Waitomo Glowworm Caves Day Trip from Auckland . This allows you to see the landscape, stop by this famous movie set, and take a boat trip through the caves to see the glowworms.

Urupukapuka Island

New Zealand is known for its gorgeous scenery, but even among the Kiwis themselves, the vistas of the Bay of Islands are considered superlative.

The Bay of Islands also plays an important role in New Zealand's history, as it was here at Waitangi that a treaty was signed between the British government and the indigenous Maori. Waitangi's Treaty Grounds are a major tourist attraction of the region, but if you're just here to experience some of the finest coastal scenery in Polynesia, then you really need to get out on a boat.

There are a wide range of cruises on offer in the Bay of Islands' centers of Paihia and Russell, any of which can take you out onto the sea to tour around the islets and islands. The coast here is part of the Bay of Islands Maritime Park, and just offshore are the islets, islands, and rock pinnacles that make this area a sailor's dream. Most boat cruises do a loop of the major sights, including stops for swimming and sunbathing at lovely Urupukapuka Island. The Bay of Islands lies about 232 kilometers from Auckland.

  • Top-Rated Tourist Attractions in the Bay of Islands

Hobbiton Film Set

The films of The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit have stamped New Zealand on the map for movie lovers. Tolkien fans and film geeks are in luck here, as the country has embraced its Middle Earth credentials with many tour companies offering trips exclusively centered around the Middle Earth theme.

The major site accessible from Auckland is the in situ movie set of Hobbiton in The Shire, where the hobbit holes, bridge, and Bilbo Baggins' house look just as they did on the big screen. About 161 kilometers from Auckland, the preserved site lies on part of the land of the privately owned Alexander Farm, so independent travelers will have to sign up for a tour to visit. One of the best tours is the Hobbit Movie Set and Waitomo Caves Glowworm Caves Day Trip fro Auckland . This is a full-day combo tour, and a perfect way to see these two big attractions.

Waiheke Island

An easy break from the city, Waiheke Island is accessible by ferry from Auckland and provides a peaceful interlude to any city itinerary. The island sits in the Hauraki Gulf and is the second biggest island in the area. Many people come here simply for a day at the beach, with Oneroa Beach and Onetangi Beach being two of the most popular spots for sandy fun.

The island has plenty more to offer though if you want to do more than sunbathing. The interior has some good bushwalking options that allow a taste of New Zealand's forests, while two ziplines (known as "flying-foxes" in New Zealand) offer a unique chance to take in panoramic views across the Hauraki Gulf.

Coromandel Peninsula

About 173 kilometers from Auckland, the Coromandel Peninsula is a popular day trip from the city for Aucklanders and foreign visitors alike.

For most locals the major highlight is Hot Water Beach , a rather nondescript stretch of grey sand for most of the day that turns into a natural spa at low tide. Here, hot mineral water runs through the sand, meaning beach-goers can dig holes and plonk themselves down into DIY hot pools for an hour or two of serious soaking.

The peninsula is also home to beautiful Cathedral Cove, which can only be accessed by boat, kayak, or walking track. The two-hour coastal walk to the cove is well worth the exercise, allowing you to see the weathered cliffs and rock formations of this area up close.

Taupo

Lake Taupo and the small shore-side town of Taupo, about 278 kilometers from Auckland, are a popular family day out, combining plenty of New Zealand's geothermal sites with the lake activities of swimming, fishing, and boating.

Boat trips around the lake, taking in Mine Bay's Maori rock carvings , are one of the most popular activities, while nearby 11-meter-high Huka Falls is famed for its thundering water.

For geothermal sites (particularly if you're not heading on to Rotorua) check out the Craters of The Moon for its steaming vents; Orakei Korako for the dazzling, colorful pools that make it New Zealand's most photogenic geothermal site; and Wairakei Terraces for the hot pools.

  • Top-Rated Tourist Attractions in Taupo

Puhoi

To capture a sense of New Zealand's relaxed rural life, head to the tiny settlement of Puhoi. Surrounded by bucolic rolling hills, this town has a history that stretches back to the 1860s, when immigrants from Bohemia settled here. Much of the town has managed to hold on to its original character, allowing you to easily imagine what early settler life would have been like.

Those interested in this period in New Zealand's history should make sure to check out the Bohemia Church and Church of St. Peter and St. Paul that date from the late 19th century.

In recent years, a bundle of artisan and foodie boutiques have opened in town making for some excellent shopping diversions here as well, while the countryside on the township's doorstep has plenty of walking and hiking opportunities for the more active.

One of the highlights of a trip to Hamilton is a visit to the Hamilton Gardens. You can spend a few hours here exploring and you will find that Paihia in the Bay of Islands is just over an hours’ drive away so you can get the best of both worlds.

8.      Mangawhai Heads – 1 hour 28 mins

A post shared by James Murray (@jamesmurray89) on Jan 14, 2018 at 12:37am PST

After soaking in the scenery from Mt Eden, return to the city centre through the Mt Eden suburb. Mt Eden Road is easy to follow north until it reaches Symonds Street. Take any of the streets east to reach Upper Queen Street, then you’re on the right path to make it back to the city centre.

Highlights along the way include Myers Park with sculptures and a children’s playground. You’ll also pass through Auckland’s entertainment district with the Basement Theatre and Q Theatre .

As you approach the bustle of the city centre, stop by Aotea Square for interesting cultural sculptures, the Herald Theatre , Sky World Indoor Entertainment and our favourite little dessert place, OKO Dessert Kitchen .

Continue up Queen Street and you complete your loop of a one day in Auckland city walking tour!

The most famous city in New Zealand, and by far its largest, Auckland is a fascinating place to visit. Situated between the Hauraki Gulf to the east and the Manukau Harbour leading to the Tasman Sea to the west, potentially the best views of the city are from the dormant volcanoes that dot the cityscape. So, with such a large city and so much to see and do, the big question is how do you best spend just 24 hours in Auckland? We’re here to give you everything you need to know with our 1 day in Auckland itinerary.

The perfect 1 day in Auckland itinerary

Mount Eden for sunrise

So kickstart your day with a walk (or drive) up Mount Eden to get some absolutely stunning views of the city. At 196m, Mount Eden isn’t a strenuous hike, but there is also ample parking if you’d prefer to drive up. But from the summit of this dormant volcano, you’ll get the best views of the Auckland skyline.

The great thing about starting your morning early at Mount Eden is that you’re also almost guaranteed to have the place all to yourself, and the perfect vantage point to see the city waking up from its overnight slumber.

Stroll to the Auckland Domain

If the weather is good, definitely take a saunter down to New Zealand’s oldest and largest park, the Auckland Domain. The good news for the walk is that it’s all downhill and depending on your speed, it’s only a 30 minute walk. You’ll first arrive at Pukekaroa Hill, which hosts a memorial for the first Maori King. Make sure you take a wander along Lover’s Walk and pop into the Wintergarden.

If you’re looking for some breakfast, check out Bl o c Café on the way from Mount Eden to the Auckland Domain – it’s a great place to fuel up before cracking on with the Auckland itinerary. It’s open from 7.30am during the week, a little later at weekend!

Luckily, our third suggested location for your 1 day Auckland itinerary is set within the Auckland Domain. The Auckland War Memorial Museum is one of city’s most popular tourist attractions, along with being one of Auckland’s most important museums and war memorials.

The museum, one of the country’s earliest, is dedicated to the history of New Zealand; both military and natural history. You’ll want to give yourself at least a couple of hours to explore the museum.

Opening hours: 10.00am to 5.00pm daily

Entrance: International Guests – 25 NZD for adults (16.50 USD/12.70 GBP) and 10 NZD for children (10.60 USD/5.00 GBP), New Zealanders – Free

places to visit within 1 hours of auckland

Around a 20 minute walk from the Auckland Domain, you’ll find our next stop, the finest art gallery in New Zealand: the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki. Established in 1888, the art gallery is home to the most impressive and largest collection of both national and international art in New Zealand.

Entrance: 20 NZD for adult (13.20 USD/10.20 GBP)

places to visit within 1 hours of auckland

Next, head right into downtown Auckland to visit the most iconic building in New Zealand and the tallest building in the southern hemisphere – the Sky Tower . At 328m tall, the Sky Tower dominates the skyline, but after a ride in the glass floored lifts to the viewing deck at 220m up, you’ll get amazing panoramic views over the city.

If you’ve come to a country that is famous for its adrenaline activities, then why not try out the SkyJump bungy , or 360 degree SkyWalk? If you’d prefer to just soak up the views and also taste some amazing food, make a reservation at Orbit Dining .

Opening hours: 8.30am to 10.30pm (summer) and 9.00am to 10.00pm (winter)

Entrance: 32 NZD for adults (21.20 USD/16.25 GBP) and 13 NZD for children (8.60 USD/6.60 GBP)

So your penultimate stop for your 1 day in Auckland itinerary is to head to the Viaduct Harbour , a former commercial harbour turned bustling waterfront complex. Here you’ll find the perfect setting for some late afternoon drinks (or sundowners) and have a chance to visit the really unique National Maritime Museum .

places to visit within 1 hours of auckland

With New Zealand having such a strong maritime heritage, the museum is a great way to understand how the first Maoris made the crossing from the Pacific islands, the arrival of the first European settlers right through to the most recent sports yachts used in the Americas Cup.

Note: Make sure you make it to the National Maritime Museum by 4.00pm as it closes at 5.00pm!

Entrance: 20 NZD for adults (13.20 USD/10.20 GBP)

Auckland Night Market

What better way to finish your day in Auckland, than trying out some of the must-eat foods in New Zealand all in one location at the Auckland Night Market ?

Open every night of the week in a different location (usually from around 5pm), you’ll experience a really fun and vibrant atmosphere. This one shouldn’t be missed it’s one of the best things to do in Auckland at night !

Although if you’re not that keen on a night market and instead fancy checking out markets during the day, there are some excellent farmers markets in Auckland to explore instead.

Opening hours: From 5.00pm daily

Location: Varies each night – check out their website for more details .

How to get around in Auckland

So our favourite way to see a city is on foot! And we’ve made our itinerary very much a walkable route if you’re relatively active, although you’ll probably be a touch tired by the end of the day, it really is very achievable!

There is also a really awesome free walking tour that you could consider! Check out the information on the route and how to book a spot (required) on the Auckland Free Walking Tours website . They have 2 tours each day starting at 10.00am and 2.00pm. The walk takes around 2.5 hours and passes loads of the city’s key sights.

If you’re less keen to be plodding the streets, or you’re a fair-weather walker, then the easiest way to get around town is to rent a car. Just a slight word of warning, that the price for parking can be a little expensive in town. Look out for the Wilson car parks dotted around the central business district – they tend to work out cheaper than parking on the street. You can also download their app for cheaper parking although, to be honest, we couldn’t figure out how it worked!

If you’re looking for the latest rental car prices in Auckland, check out RentalCars!

Public transport

Auckland has a very reliable and cheap public transport system – the Link buses. There are 3 separate lines: the City Link, InnerLink and OuterLink. You’re able to pay directly on the bus with cash, or for an easier option, check out the AT HOP card , which allows you to load money and tap in and out of the buses.

To plan out your journey, use the Auckland Transport Journey Planner here .

Getting to and from Auckland International Airport

So in all likelihood you’ll be arriving into Auckland Airport, which is actually located in Manukau about 20km to the south of Auckland city centre. There are numerous options for making the journey from Auckland airport to the city (and vice versa), including the taxis, Super Shuttle, SkyBus and Backpacker Shuttle.

SkyBus: One of the easiest ways to get into downtown Auckland, but not quite as convenient as a shuttle service, the bus departs numerous times each hour and follows a specific route. It’ll cost you 17 NZD (11.20 USD/8.60 GBP) one way – check out the timetables and routes here .

Super Shuttle: Operating a door to airport and return service for over 30 years, check out Super Shuttle for a quote – it’ll cost you around 25 NZD (16.50 USD/12.70 GBP) each way.

Backpacker Shuttle: So the cheapest airport to door service, starting at 20 NZD  (13.20 USD/10.20 GBP) per person and going as cheap as 10 NZD (6.60 USD/5.00 GBP) for groups of 4 or more. Check out the Backpacker Shuttle option.

Uber: The fastest and most easiest way is to book an Uber – it’ll cost you around 40 NZD ( 26.50 USD/20.30 GBP) each way.

Bonus activities to add to your Auckland itinerary

Hopefully you have a few more days in the city or you can cram in a couple more activities? Here is our shortlist of other must-do items to add to your Auckland itinerary:

Auckland Whale & Dolphin Safari

Although you’ll need to have at least half a day to do it, we absolutely loved going out with the Auckland Whale & Dolphin Safari company. You’ll spend around 4 hours seeking out the wildlife in the area, led by an experienced crew, with marine biologists in tow – they know exactly where to find these beautiful creatures.

places to visit within 1 hours of auckland

As part of the trip they teach you about the plankton that make the food for the gentle giants, stop and do daily tests of how healthy the waters are around Auckland and give you all the tips you need to know about spotting whales and dolphins. What we didn’t know before we went, was that it’s actually the birds that give the whales and dolphins’ locations away!

What’s even more is that if the crew aren’t happy with the experience, you’ll get a voucher so that you can actually do it again. To give you an example of the standards they set themselves, we saw about 100 dolphin during the day, but they still gave everyone on our trip a complimentary voucher to come back.

We were lucky enough to see a huge pod of over 100 dolphins, which we followed for over an hour towards the harbour. It’s an experience we will never forget and we can’t recommend this tour enough – if you have an afternoon free, please add it to our city itinerary.

High Tea at the Cordis Hotel

If you’re looking for a special treat, you should check out the high tea at the Cordis Hotel. It is without doubt one of the finest afternoon dining experience in the country (and gives London high teas a run for their money!) and a great way to relax (especially if the weather isn’t ideal). You’ll spend the afternoon sipping on their luxurious array of teas, and be delighted by their fanciful scones, cakes and – of course – cucumber sandwiches.

Ferry to Waiheke Island

Now if you had more than one day in Auckland, heading to Waiheke Island would be right at the top of our recommendations – make sure that you give yourself at least half a day to explore this really stunning island. Departing from the Downtown Ferry Terminal, the Fullers Ferry runs up to 24 crossings every day. Travel time is around 40 minutes – book your tickets here .

The best thing to do on Waiheke island is to visit the wine farms and go wine tasting. Check out this option with Get Your Guide . There is really something for everyone on Waiheke, whether it’s walking the beautiful tracks at the Whakanewha National Park, to relaxing on the beaches, visiting the art galleries or even trying out some mountain biking.

Auckland Zoo

If we’re honest, we are not huge fans of zoos. We believe that animals shouldn’t be kept in captivity unless for essential reasons around breeding or safety. That firmly said, Auckland Zoo does a lot in the conservation area and supports not only breeding programs but wider sustainability issues, making it a zoo with a purpose. Plus its definitely a fun day out, particularly if you have kids!

This 40 acre zoo is actually not very far from Auckland’s city centre, making it a relatively easy trip out. It’s Aoteraroa’s largest animal sanctuary and is home to over 130 species and 1,400 animals boasting everything from African elephants, rhinos, lions and giraffes to tigers and red pandas. There are beautiful bird centres, chronicling both local birds and more exotic species, and of course you’ll find lizards, fish and so much more.

places to visit within 1 hours of auckland

A highlight of the zoo is the ‘Vet Hospital’, more formally known as the New Zealand Centre for Conservation Medicine. Here you can watch live procedures unfold right before you eyes, as they treat both zoo animals and sick wildlife. On one day you might see a tiger getting a root canal (really!) and another might be a bog-standard check up for one of the native birds.

A Day Pass will set you back 24 NZD (15.80 USD/12.20 GBP) for adults and 13 NZD (8.50 USD/6.60 GBP) for kids between 4-14 (under 4’s go free).

Location: Motions Rd, Auckland 1022

Opening hours: 9.30am – 5.30pm daily

Wander the Te Ara I Whiti The Lightpath

The Auckland City Council are a smart bunch. What better way to push more people to get walking or onto their bicycle than making a tourist attraction out of their bike track, than to paint it a garishly bright pink? Yup, The Lightpath is actually part of the Nelson Street Cycleway and connects Upper Queen street to Quay street. It’s about 700m long and so an easy (totally flat) walk which takes you past the iconic Sky Tower for some amazing photographs, and down towards the harbour.

Plus, if you head there after dark there are 300 programmable LED lights which create interactive displays as you move along it!

Sea Life, Kelly Tarlton’ Aquarium

If the zoo wasn’t your scene but you’re still keen on seeing underwater animals (more than the Whale and Dolphin Safari that is!) make your way to Sea Life aquarium , named after Kelly Tarlton. Who is Kelly, you might ask? A marine archaeologist, this smart guy set out to use old sewage story tanks in the city harbour to create an aquarium made out of curved acrylic tunnels. It was a novel idea that helped revive the area and was a world first at the time (in 1985).

Nowadays this major complex doesn’t just have the tunnels but also a number of other viewing areas and exhibitions like the Antartic Ice Adventure, including penguins and a few nods to Antarctica and its exploration. There is a massive stingray tank full of rays including one of the world’s largest, Phoebe, who weighs in at a whopping 250 kilograms! You can also check out Seahorse Kingdom and the Fish Gallery, boasting red bellied piranhas, moray eels and even those bloated-looking guys, pufferfish.

Penguins at Sea Life Kelly Tarlton Auckland

Location: 23 Tamaki Drive, Orakei, Auckland 1071

Opening hours: 9.30am – 5.00pm daily

Cost: 39 NZD (25.70 USD / 19.60 GBP) but only if you buy it online beforehand, as its more expensive at the door!

We suggest you book it online with Get your Guide which includes a skip the line ticket and 24 hour cancellation!

Mission Bay Beach

Just 6.5 kilometres (4 miles) from the city centre is this popular suburb of Auckland, Mission Bay. While you can drive it, you can also take a walk along the purpose-built harbour walkway and arrive in the peaceful seaside suburb. Mission Bay is known for its fish and chips (try the Fish Pot Café), its epic views of Rangitoto Island and, of course, the beach. Just put down your towel and umbrella and relax away from the bustle of Auckland city.

Where to stay in Auckland

There are loads of great hotels and hostels to choose from in Auckland, but we’d definitely suggest that you look at options within downtown Auckland – especially if you’re in Auckland for only one day then you’ll definitely want to be in and around the action!

Luxury : If you’re looking for luxury, then look no further than the 5* Cordis Hotel , the location is right in the city centre. This ‘old dame’ of the city is beautifully appointed – just the lobby itself makes you feel as if you’ve stepped into an classic film set. We were blown away by the impeccable service, the fantastic space, the rooftop pool and the dining options at their Eight restaurant.

However, a word must be said about the beds. The Cordis has what can only be described as the most comfortable beds we have ever slept in. Really, ever. So much so that they actually sell these beds; a worthwhile investment if you’re going to live in New Zealand.

places to visit within 1 hours of auckland

Budget: Located on Nelson Street, close to loads of the main Auckland attractions we’d suggest that you go for TMACS Backpackers. They’ve got a shared lounge, free wifi and a lovely garden and terrace to explore.

Bonus: Day trips from Auckland

Famous for its geysers, mud pools and geothermal valleys, Rotorua is only two hours from Auckland and so definitely worth the trip. We’ve written an entire guide on the multitude of amazing things you can do in Rotorua ( read it here ) but, in short, the city boasts everything from the thermal wonderlands of Wai-O-Tapu and Te Puia, to Maori cultural experiences like Tamaki Maori Village or going 20 metres above ground to do a suspended walkway through ancient redwood trees.

Redwoods treetop walk, Rotorua

You can take in a sheep show at the Agrodome (which, we promise you is the show of a lifetime!), relax in the natural baths at the Polynesian Spa, check out those famous kiwi birds in the hatchery at Rainbow Springs or just tuck into delicious food at Eat Street.

More keen on extreme sports? Rotorua boasts a luge (and a skyline gondola), jetboating, white water rafting, zorbing and the aptly-named Velocity Valley , an adventure playground with BMX jumps, bungy jumping, a giant swing, Shweeb racing (biking on a monorail) or skydiving!

Agrodome sheep show Rotorua

Tip: Instead of doing a self-drive, you can book a day tour from Auckland that includes both the key Rotorua sights (like Te Puia and the Agrodome) and the Waitomo Glowworm caves (more on that one below). We recommend Greatsights, who we did our Rotorua tour with, as they were excellent! Find the latest prices and book here .

So its definitely a bit of a longer drive from Auckland – about three and a half hours to be exact. But you can definitely still do a day trip out to see Lake Taupo, the biggest lake in all of New Zealand! This beautiful lake offers more than just its enormous glassy surface as it also boasts the most popular natural attraction in all of New Zealand, Huka Falls. If you have the time, we recommend you do a short walk (about 45 minutes) from the hot springs to Huka Falls, for some amazing views.

Huka Falls near Lake Taupo

Like Rotorua, Taupo also has some geothermal parks including Craters of the Moon which, as the name suggests, feels like an otherworldly experience. Strangely enough, the town is also home to the ‘world’s most unique McDonalds’. Seriously, it’s a thing. Voted first out of 35, 000 restaurants around the world because you can literally eat your Big Mac in a converted airplane!

Bay of Islands

Around a 3 hour drive from Auckland is Paihia, the coastal town that is the jewel in the Bay of Islands. What’s the Bay of Islands, you might ask? Well just 144 of the most beautiful islands set in magically turquoise water and boasting amazing beaches and heaps of hiking trails, if tramping is your thing!

We’ve got a whole article just on Paihia and what to do there if you’re interested. Want the highlights? Well in Paihia you can take a boat tour out to the islands, to see where James Cook first made landfall in New Zealand. You can dine on fish and chips at the wharf, stroll around the Waitangi Treaty Grounds which is known as the ‘birthplace’ of New Zealand or check out some of the incredible waterfalls in the area, like Haruru Falls or Rainbow Falls.

Roberton Island lookout Lee

You can’t visit New Zealand without heading to Hobbiton. Honestly, we’re not even huge Lord of the Rings fans and we were fascinated by this movie set. You might know that New Zealand is famous as the filming location for both the LOTR and Hobbiton film series. And Hobbiton itself is the star in those, and now a permanent fixture near a small town called Matamata.

There are tours departing for Hobbiton directly from Auckland ( book one here and do it in advance – you’ll notice they sell out!) , and really are well worth it. We loved our journey around the movie set as its of an impeccably high standard and guided by hugely passionate LOTR fans who not only keep you entertained for the duration of it, but also give you some insider secrets that even a casual LOTR fan would be salivating over. Plus you’ll end it all at the Green Dragon pub with a homebrewed mug of cider, beer or apple juice for your troubles.

Hobbiton near Rotorua

Waitomo Glow worm caves

We mentioned them above since Waitomo isn’t too far from Rotorua, but you can definitely just make a day trip out of visiting the renowned glow worm caves of Waitomo! Essentially this is a tour of this unique phenomenon – an underground cave where you not only see amazing stalactites and learn about the area, but a mesmerizing boat ride in a cavern full of amazing glow worms, shining bright blue in the inky black darkness.

Do it as a day trip from Auckland (it takes about 2 hours and 20 minutes to drive there), or make it a combo day tour with Rotorua by booking it with GreatSights directly out of Auckland.

New Plymouth

Firstly, a quick disclaimer: we haven’t been to New Plymouth. We just didn’t have the time on our last trip to New Zealand. So we’ve put it on the list because we haven’t personally visited it but also, technically, it’s a nearly 5 hour drive and so not really a day trip, unless you love time in the car.

That said, we’ve been told a few times that it is well worth a quick visit and you could always book one night in this oil-rich town on the west coast. The city is known for its many eclectic art galleries, relaxing city parks and heaps of great walking trails, if you’re that way inclined. There is a 13km promenade walkway, the New Plymouth Coastal Walkway, giving you epic ocean views or trails in Egmont National Park, under the watchful eye of the incredible Mount Taranaki.

When is the best time of year to visit Auckland?

If you’re keen to get the warmest, and in general the driest months for your time in Auckland, then January and February are the ideal months. The later in January you can go, also the better especially if you’re also looking to visit some of the more summer holiday destinations around Auckland. Don’t forget that New Zealanders tend to have their longer holidays around the December and January festive period. So, if you’re planning to visit over this time make sure you plan and book well ahead!

March and December are also generally good months in Auckland with warm weather, but early December and later March can have much more changeable weather.

So, you’ve made it to the very end of our Auckland guide. What did you think of our 1 day in Auckland itinerary? Let us know if we’ve missed anything by commenting below, or get in touch if there are some other activities you think we have to include.

Also, if you’re looking for other New Zealand guides, check out our New Zealand travel guides section where we have loads of great itineraries and road trips, from the Bay of Islands in the north, all the way to Queenstown in the South Island .

  • Main Camera: Panasonic Lumix FZ1000
  • Drone: DJI Mavic Air – Fly More Combo
  • GoPro: Hero 7 Black

Disclosure:  The Travel Scribes were very fortunate to be hosted by Cordis for our stay in Auckland, and were invited by Auckland Whale and Dolphin Safari to try their tour. However, all views and recommendations are our own, and we were not paid to include either the Cordis or Auckland Whale and Dolphin Safari as part of this itinerary or anywhere on our website. We have included the hotel and tour as we believe that they are both great options for anyone visiting Auckland.
