Can a Ram Power Wagon Tow a Fifth Wheel Trailer? (Ask TFLTruck)

2017 ram power wagon towing trailer

We recently received the following question from Kevin N. about the possibility of towing a 5th wheel trailer with a Ram Power Wagon that is equipped with a 6.4L HEMI V8.

I currently have a 2007 Dodge 2500 with a 5.7 HEMI V8 that can tow right around 10,000 lbs. I pull a 5 th  wheel that ways 7,000 lbs dry with a 1,420 lbs hitch weight. I would like to buy a PW and all the info I’ve seen says it can tow right around the same 10,000 lbs. A guy at my local dealership told me it could tow more if it’s a 5 th  wheel or gooseneck (not sure if that’s true or not). Will I see or feel much difference going with the 6.4L over my current 5.7L and if I were to upgrade my 5 th  wheel to a 8,500 dry weight with a 1,470 hitch weight could a PW do it without causing to many problems? I believe the GVWR of the camper is 9,900 lbs if that matters. Thanks for any help, Kevin

Kevin, thank you for writing to us. First, you are correct. The latest Ram Power Wagon has a maximum towing rating of nearly 10,000 lbs. Actually, it’s 9,790 lbs for a base model of the Power Wagon. Check all of the Power Wagon towing and payload specs .

Your limiting factor will be the payload capacity. The Power Wagon is an off-road focused truck. As such, it has a different suspension setup when compared to a regular Ram 2500 HD. The single-rate springs are more compliant, but they also limit the payload to a maximum of 1,444 lbs for a base PW. If you add options to the truck, the payload will drop to 1,300 lbs or lower. The payload rating for each specific truck is on the sticker inside the driver door jam.

You are correct to be cautious with the information that a dealership representative gave you. The answer is: the payload rating of the truck does not allow it to tow your fifth-wheel trailer. If your trailer has 1,420 lbs or 1,470 lbs of hitch weight, then it already overloads the truck on payload. It means you cannot bring any people or things.

Just ordered a travel trailer to go on the road. Looking at adding air bags (suspension) in the back to minimize squat of the 2021 Power Wagon. Has anyone done this and if so, does the air bags hinder the ride quality when airbags are inflated with minimum pressure and not towing a trailer? Please also post pictures

I’m a bit off topic but not really… I was looking at air bags for my motor home and to be honest the install was above my pay grade and I can’t find a person to help with the installation. Then I found Timbren (shocks). Cost was just over $300 installation was about 15 minutes and the difference was night and day.

Timbrens are also great if you aren't towing frequently, as you can install them pretty quickly, especially if you notch your bump stops the same way the timbrens are notched, makes it so that only a single bolt needs to come out. (sidebar, why are these bolts so freaking long!) That said, takes me about 15 mins to swap them with the wheels on, kind of a pain in the rear but if it's infrequent enough it's not bad. I'd prefer bags, just because of the simplicity, but with that you are trading convenience for added cost and maintenance.

I had air bags on a truck and they worked great but where a bit of a pain airing up and down. Not the end of the world though. On the new ram 2500 I lucked into some timbrens for 51 dollars on a bid site. They were like new and I thought what the heck, I ll try them. I love the timbrens, install and forget or as Uglyviking said, 15 minutes and its back to stock. I keep them installed and the improvement is unbelievable when pulling a trailer or under a load. If I was 4 wheeling, I would remove the timbrens or put a helmet on and a mouthguard in.

I had about 2"-2.5" of squat in the back end without the air bags. It also seemed to smooth out the ride when I wasn't towing, so I'm pretty happy with it. I also put the Wireless Air unit in so that I could change the pressure on the fly. The shocks went in real easy, probably only took about 2 hours. The air pump took about a day but I spent a lot of time tracing out the right wires to get power there. View attachment 41478 View attachment 41477 Click to expand...

A trailer that size is nothing for a PW and my point is that megacabby is wanting a WDH AND bags to compensate for (maybe) 700 pounds on the tongue. I’ve got a TT that puts around 500 on the tongue. I just use some bags to level it and it goes great on a 7” drop hitch. Steering it straight ahead due to suspension geometry being the same and steering is just as weighted. WDH is not needed for a trailer this size behind a truck that outweighs said trailer IMO. Been there done that. Level it with some bags and be happy. If it were a bigger bumper pull we might have a different conversation

For the sway control alone the equalizer WDH is worth using.

I'm not a tow master or anything, but for my 32' tow behind I'd def want the sway control on the longer distance trips. Don't care much about the weight distribution, as I think the truck can handle up to the largest tow behinds, but the sway control is important to me with a trailer that much of a wind sail. I can't imagine it plays much of a roll for shorter trailers (length of height) but for travel trailers, or 30+ ft box trailers, I think I'd want the sway control for anything over an hour drive.

jsalbre said: There’s no way a 6400# dry weight travel trailer has a 700# tongue weight loaded for travel unless you travel exceptionally light or have the trailer very poorly loaded. Putting the dry weight of 6354# into Google tells me it’s likely a Heartland BH270. That’s a 32’ long trailer with a 7700# GVWR. The dry hitch weight is listed at 680#. That trailer is well over 700# on the tongue with just propane tanks and batteries. It has a huge front storage compartment that most people are going to fill with gear, and a 41 gallon fresh water tank right at the front. If you fill that up you’re adding nearly 345# right behind the tongue. I’d bet it scales at 1100-1200# tongue weight loaded up for camping. Weight aside, a WDH is going to be of huge value just for controlling sway on a trailer that long. Passing semis are going to give that thing quite a shove. Click to expand...

The people having sway issues are the ones towing way to fast or have almost no tongue weight… Click to expand...
UglyViking said: Have you towed a pull behind travel trailer >30' without WDH? I think there is a pretty big difference between a long tow behind travel trailer and most commercial trailers, which tend to be shorter in height or length even if they weigh a lot more. I also know some guys just refuse to use them, for whatever reason. I'll agree that not having your tongue weight correctly setup is bad from a stability perspective, and I think we've all seen the videos with the little rc car and improperly setup trailer weight,. That said, I think there is also something to be said for the giant windsail that most travel trailers are, especially the longer ones. Click to expand...

2020 Ram 2500 Power Wagon Remains a Hulking Heavy-Duty Off-Roader

Built on Ram's latest HD truck platform, the lifted and fortified 2500 Power Wagon model still stands as the king of off-road-oriented heavy-duty pickups.

2020 ram 2500 power wagon

.css-1rvrtxn{font-family:Gliko,Gliko-fallback,Gliko-roboto,Gliko-local,Georgia,Times,Serif;font-size:1.625rem;line-height:1.2;margin:0rem;-webkit-text-decoration:underline;text-decoration:underline;text-decoration-color:#DBCA8B;text-decoration-thickness:0.25rem;}@media(max-width: 48rem){.css-1rvrtxn{font-size:2.25rem;line-height:1.1;}}@media(min-width: 48rem){.css-1rvrtxn{font-size:2.625rem;line-height:1.1;}}@media(min-width: 64rem){.css-1rvrtxn{font-size:3rem;line-height:1.1;}}.css-1rvrtxn b,.css-1rvrtxn strong{font-family:inherit;font-weight:bold;}.css-1rvrtxn em,.css-1rvrtxn i{font-style:italic;font-family:inherit;} HIGHS: Serious off-road hardware with a warranty, climbs hills with ease, relatively smooth ride for a heavy-duty truck.

Forget about the recent proliferation of fortified, factory-built, off-road pickup trucks. The lineage of Ram's biggest, baddest off-roader was established long ago. Power Wagons have always been the real deal—tough, trail-ready trucks that aren't just built to get dirty but look best splattered with wet earth. Like the original Jeep, the first Power Wagon dates back to the 1940s and was originally born for military use. It eventually returned for a spell in the disco era and then once again 15 years ago, when it began its current reign as the off-road king of heavy-duty pickups.

2020 ram 2500 power wagon

The latest three-quarter-ton Power Wagon continues to defend its muddy crown with off-road-specific underpinnings not found on other Ram 2500s, or on any other truck in its class. Taller springs and chunky 33-inch-tall Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires add about two inches of additional ground clearance, for a total of 14.2 inches. It sits tall on its black 17-inch wheels, and Ram says it can drive through 30.0 inches of water. Although that's 3.0 inches less than what Ford claims for its new F-series Super Duty with the Tremor off-road package , the Power Wagon can climb hills and articulate its wheels in ways its newer rival can't.

LOWS: Too hulking to fit down most trails, horrific fuel economy, limited towing capacity.

Inside the Power Wagon's front and rear live axles is an electronically locking differential and 4.10:1 gears. Lock its differentials, and there isn't much terrain this pickup can't handle. A two-speed, four-wheel-drive transfer case with a steep 2.64:1 low-range setting makes it an astute crawler that can claw its way up steep grades with little wheel spin. For greater durability, the Power Wagon's rear axle is beefed up with a larger 11.5-inch ring gear and thicker axles. Ram also adds an extra joint to the front suspension at the upper axle mount, which it calls Articulink. In combination with the only electronically disconnecting front anti-roll bar in this class, the Power Wagon's 26.0 inches of front wheel articulation rivals that of some competition rigs. There's also a standard 12,000-pound Warn winch mounted behind the front bumper, in case you're still thinking the Power Wagon isn't a serious piece of equipment.

2020 ram 2500 power wagon

Not a Bucking Bronco

Live axles and a 7000-plus-pound curb weight may sound like a recipe for a crashing ride, but the Power Wagon doesn't rattle its occupants senseless. Its standard Bilstein dampers and front and rear coil springs, which are a bit softer than a standard Ram 2500's, give it an impressively smooth ride both on and off the pavement, at least for a heavy-duty truck.

Still, the Power Wagon isn't a quasi-desert racer like the Ford F-150 Raptor , nor is it as powerful and quick as that half-ton truck. We'd like to drive a Power Wagon with the Ram HD's optional 6.7-liter Cummins turbo-diesel, but that engine's not offered here. Ram says that big inline-six would add about 1000 pounds to the front of the truck, which would severely compromise its off-road capability and radically drive up its $55,045 base price.

2020 ram 2500 power wagon

Instead, every Power Wagon comes with the Ram HD's standard 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 making 410 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque. It is no slouch. Although the V-8's torque peaks at a high 4000 rpm, its response is strong just off idle, and its muscle-car rumble is accompanied by plenty of mid-range grunt. Pairing well with the standard eight-speed automatic transmission, the Hemi gets this burly Ram HD to 60 mph in about 8.4 seconds, which is painfully slow compared to the genuinely quick 450-hp Raptor. Yet, the larger, heavier-duty Ram never feels laborious around town. While the Ram's softer, off-road suspension means it can only tow up to 10,580 pounds—considerably less than what both conventional Ram HDs and the least capable Ford Super Duty Tremor are rated to tug—that's still quite a lot of weight. The downside to the Power Wagon's capability is the Hemi's thirst for refined crude.

Modern Retro

Redesigned for 2019 with the rest of Ram's heavy-duty lineup, the Power Wagon now shares much of its interior design with the light-duty Ram 1500 , meaning its cabin is about as nice as you'll find in a pickup. Our heavily optioned test truck may have cost a dear $69,890, but its interior was an embarrassment of riches that featured a massive 12.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, heated front and rear seats, a surround-view camera system, and a heated steering wheel. The Power Wagon is quiet, too. There's little wind noise making its way inside and only a slight hum from its knobby all-terrain tires.

2020 ram 2500 power wagon

The Power Wagon's exterior is more rounded than ever before, but there's still plenty of attitude from the black-grilled treatment, muscular fender flares, and old-school retro graphics that date back to the W150 model sold in the late 1970s. Back in the day, the graphics were part of the optional Macho appearance package, and they've been a huge part of the Power Wagon's cool factor since the scheme was reintroduced in 2017.

Several skidplates and powder-coated bumpers also are standard, but the body panel protection is light for a truck with this level of off-road capability. The Power Wagon's 149.3-inch wheelbase might as well be a mile long, and its rocker panels are dangerously exposed despite the truck's significant 22-degree breakover angle. Our truck's optional side steps offered some protection, but they didn't look very cool. As with most full-size rigs, this lifted, extra-large Ram is simply too hulking for technical trail work without sustaining some body damage.

Despite its newer competition from Ford's Tremor, the Ram Power Wagon remains the world's most capable off-road heavy-duty pickup. Just make sure you drive it deep into the dirt where it belongs before you start hootin' like the Duke boys.

More parking. That's all Scott Oldham really wants out of life. His three-car garage is full, as is his driveway. Necessity, combined with poor financial judgment and an inability to sell anything, has forced the second-generation automotive writer and smoky-burnout enthusiast to store a few of his prized American classics in rental garages around Los Angeles. But not the big-block 1969 Camaro his built with his dad; that one stays close to home.

Average Towing Cost Per Mile

Most tow companies charge $50 to $125  for a 5- to 10-mile local tow, or a  $75 hook-up fee and $2 to $4 per mile  for long-distance towing. The average 40-mile tow costs  $125 to $250 .

Before you call a tow truck company, check your car insurance policy for free tow-truck service coverage.

Towing cost per mile - chart

The key factors that determine the cost of a tow truck service are the towing distance and the vehicle size. Prices vary by region and company.

Tow truck service transporting car on highway

Why Would I Need to Be Towed?

Cars need towing when something breaks that makes it impossible to drive. The vehicle may not start, or car tires have deflated.

There may also be trouble with the:

If your battery is low, jump start the car to give the battery enough power to get you to the next location. Sometimes a battery is so dead that it will not start the battery and it requires a tow truck.

What Services Do Car Towing Companies Offer?

Towing company services often provide roadside assistance. If the vehicle does not start because it ran out of gas, a tow truck company will bring gas.

Here are some other services they offer:

Jump-start a battery in a dead car

Unlock the car door

Transport a broken car

Pull out a stuck car

Tire change

Towing Cost Estimator

Before giving you a price, tow truck service companies will factor into towing rates:

How far they must tow the truck

How large of a car is towed

How difficult it is to get the vehicle onto the tow truck (if it’s muddy or on a steep slope)

The time of day

Tow truck companies usually have a minimum charge to cover their business costs such as gas. This minimum rate of about  $50  usually includes a towing distance of between 5 to 10 miles.

Size of Vehicle

A standard fee includes a 4-door sedan, but often trucks and large SUVs have an additional charge. Each company varies, so check with the local company for a more accurate estimate. Typically, the extra cost is  $10 to $35 .

Time of Day

Another factor to consider in the cost of a tow is the time of day. After-hours towing typically starts at 8 or 9 p.m. and ends between 6 to 8 a.m. Each company’s after-hours service varies.

Some companies’ additional cost is as low as  $5.

Others charge up to a  $150  one-time fee.

Roadside Assistance Cost

As the name suggests, roadside assistance companies help with all the needs you may have if the car is acting up. They can help with many roadside needs, such as replacing a flat tire and jump-starting a car.

Roadside assistance is also a reliable service for hiring a tow truck. These companies have relationships with local tow truck companies they can refer. Also, some credit card companies and auto manufacturers offer a free towing service for all their customers.

AAA Towing Cost

Membership with a roadside assistance company can range from  $52 to $144 per year  with nationally known companies such as AAA, AARP, and All-State Motor Club. Most of these service providers will cover the cost of towing the vehicle  up to 100 miles.

Roadside Assistance Membership Clubs

Allstate offers a Roadside Advantage plan or a Platinum Elite plan. The cheaper plan maxes out its roadside assistance benefits at  $150,  whereas the more costly plan ends reimbursement at  $250.

The cost for each service can also depend on the region. When checking prices with local companies, be sure to ask about renewal fees for the future. Paying a yearly fee for roadside assistance includes discounts on car rentals, flights, hotel stays, and restaurant meals.

Towing service FAQs

Does my car insurance company cover roadside assistance or towing costs.

A car insurance company may include roadside assistance or towing costs. Each company is different, so you should check with yours and see if this service is available. Many of the large car insurance companies offer this service for an additional price, such as Progressive, USAA, Allstate, and Nationwide.

What if I need to get towed after an accident?

After a car accident, most insurance companies will cover the cost of a car tow within the insurance claim. The services a car insurance company offers after an accident varies with each company and coverage type. If you have questions about specific costs, call your car insurance agent.

How Much Does Towing Cost Per Day?

If you get towed, storage fees at impound lots range from  $30 to $80 per day . Based on a city bylaw, you may get charged a quarter of the daily rate per hour for the first four hours your vehicle is impounded.

How Much Does Boat Towing Cost?

The cost to tow a boat is  $200 to $500 per hour . A sea-towing membership costs  $149 to $249 per year  for unlimited towing.

How Much Does a Camper, RV, or Big Rig Cost To Tow?

The cost to tow a camper, RV, or big rig typically ranges from  $4 to $7 per mile . For example, an 80-mile tow of an RV will cost between  $450 to $600 .

Mercedes’ electric g-wagon is more capable than the gas version, with four motors, deeper fording, and more power, you can forget about the gas version..

Roberto Baldwin - Apr 24, 2024 2:30 pm UTC

A beige Mercedes G-Wagon off roads

The Mercedes G-Wagon, a very capable off-roader typically purchased by people who never intend to take it anywhere near dirt, is getting an electric upgrade.

Unveiled in Beverly Hills—the most fitting of locations—the 2025 G 580 with EQ Technology spun its way onto the scene. The all-electric G-Wagon sports a 116 kWh capacity battery pack, four motors (one for each wheel), and a new sound system to replace the gas motor, called the G-Roar. Sadly, there's no word on price, delivery date, or range. But on paper, its impressive specs make it better than the ICE version off-road.

For serious off-roaders likely not residing in Beverly Hills, the luxury off-roader's four independent motors offer true torque vectoring and electronic differential locks. Each motor is coupled with a two-speed transmission for a reduced gear low range. The ideal use for this is rock crawling. In fact, there's an actual "Rock" crawling mode in the G 580. Mercedes is not playing.

To get it over hills and obstacles, the EV has an approach angle of 32 degrees, a departure angle of 30.7 degrees, and a 20.3-degree breakover angle. If you do happen to momentarily high-center on a boulder, a proprietary carbon fiber composite cover that the automaker says is more rigid than aluminum or steel protects the battery pack and motors. Plus, it's lighter. At 127 pounds (58 kg), Mercedes says it would have been three times heavier if it had been made from steel.

  • Mercedes' boxy G-Wagon has a cult following. Mercedes-Benz
  • M-B is sticking with its ladder frame construction for the G-Wagon. Mercedes-Benz
  • You might expect to find a spare tire back here, but it's a place to keep your charging cables. Mercedes-Benz

The Mercedes ladder frame that is part of the G-Wagon—essentially a body-on-frame system—is still there but in a slightly modified and reinforced fashion. The suspension also carries over from the gas counterpart, with a few changes. The same double-wishbone suspension is up front, and a solid rear axle has been redesigned to accommodate the electric motors. All four motors are mounted to the frame and connected to the wheels via dual-joint driveshafts that, even at full compression, keep the wheel camber the same, according to Mercedes. In off-roading, you want a tire's contact patch to stay the same, especially when things get a bit extreme.

To battle bodies of water (perhaps the LA river will overflow at some point), the electric G 580 can ford through up to 33.5 inches (850 mm) of water. That's 5.9 inches (150 mm) more than the gas-powered G 550 and AMG G 63 can manage. On hills, the G EV can handle angles of up to 35 degrees without slipping.

Finally, the electric G-Wagon can spin in a circle, as we saw in videos from CES this year. It can do so twice on dirt or loose gravel. It's a great way to forget everything you've learned about three-point turns when you realize that you've gone the wrong way and want to turn around. It also gives the ability to turn the vehicle while one of the rear wheels is stationary, which can help in tight corners on narrow trails.

  • How many G-Wagons will ever go rock crawling? Mercedes-Benz
  • For those who do venture into wild terrain, the G-Wagon can handle it. Mercedes-Benz
  • A look at the G-Wagon's underbody. Mercedes-Benz

For those less inclined to potentially scratch the exterior of their new luxury electric G-Wagon, the 580 also ships with a Trail mode in addition to the usual Sport, Comfort, and Individual settings.

Those four motors equal 579 hp (432 kW) and 859 lb-ft (1,165 Nm) of torque that can propel the vehicle from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds.

While we don't know the range, we do know that the vehicle has been slightly altered compared to the gas version to reduce drag. A spoiler on the roof, a slightly raised hood, A-pillar cladding, and aero wheels help make the vehicle more aerodynamic.
