Sargassum is a free-floating seaweed that is especially prolific in the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. While beneficial to ocean life, these large free-floating seaweed mats often wash up on beaches. The amount of seaweed on the beaches fluctuates based on the time of year and ocean currents. While resorts do their best to maintain the beaches for their guests, you may experience some inconvenience during your stay.

Game-changing new Costco item draws praise for offering flexible added home space

For anyone who needs more space for a home office, gym or entertainment, but only has space in their backyard, one new item at Costco is drawing attention.

Just last week, the retail giant unveiled the SunVilla Milton Outdoor Suite with a price tag of $4,499.99. 

"Transition seamlessly from your yard to your fully enclosed outdoor room through the grand sliding tempered glass double doors," the Costco Wholesale website states. "Cutting-edge aluminum composite panels paired with shatter-resistant tempered glass offers the durability and elegance of a custom-build right in your backyard."

The outdoor suite does not offer a floor, so it is recommended it be constructed on concrete or a "similarly solid foundation." Costco does say, however, that they have partnered with the BILT App, so customers can have "step-by-step, detailed 3D instructions," making the assembly a "weekend project" rather than needing professional help.

Product specifications say the structure's roof has been tested to handle "a snow load of up to 20 pounds per square foot, ensuring your outdoor space remains safe and secure regardless of the weather."

The suite's set of sliding double doors do include key locks, and removable tempered glass windows that can be swapped out for screens to allow breezes. The space can also be sealed up to soak in sunlight on chilly days.

Life and home publication Domino raved about the flexibility of the space, stating a Peloton and other workout equipment could easily fit inside. It also notes the suite could be an art studio, an office or a dining room.

Costco says the structure does not come with a floor, so it needs to be constructed "on a flat and level surface such as concrete or similarly solid foundation."

Manufacturer SunVilla's website says the company "has been designing and creating Simply Refined outdoor furniture" for nearly a decade. The company says their mission is to offer premium outdoor patio furniture at an unmatched value. 

Delivery of the room is available in Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico at an additional shipping and handling fee, Costco states. 

One Reason You May Want a Costco Membership -- Even if There's No Store Nearby

A s of mid-March 2024, Costco maintained 604 warehouse club locations in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Despite that, you might still happen to live someplace where there's no Costco location anywhere nearby.

If you don't live near a Costco store, you might assume that joining is a poor financial decision. But actually, there's one service Costco offers that you may be able to use even if you're not able to make it to the store on a regular basis.

So you might receive a $100 resort credit, for instance, that you can redeem for perks like drinks or spa treatments, if you book a Costco vacation package. Or, you may be eligible for a Costco Shop Card thanks to booking travel. That's a gift card you can redeem for Costco merchandise.

The savings you reap by booking travel through Costco may be enough to pay for your annual membership -- even an Executive one. A Costco Executive membership costs $120 a year, as opposed to $60 for a basic membership. But with that upgraded membership, you get 2% cash back on your Costco purchases.

Meanwhile, let's say you book a vacation package for Costco for $3,000 that would cost $3,500 elsewhere. In that case, you're not only saving $500. As an Executive member, you're also getting 2% of that $3,000, or $60, coming back your way. Book a second package of that price later in the year, and you've just racked up $120 in cash back to pay for your Executive membership in full.

Don't write off Costco just because there's no store nearby

The closer you live to a Costco location, the more often you might get to use your membership. But don't assume you'll be wasting money on a membership if there's no Costco nearby. The chain's travel service alone might offer enough financial benefit to justify a membership.

And remember, as a member, you can always place orders on Costco.com. The online prices are usually higher than those you'll find in stores. But you might still save a bundle compared to the cost of buying goods at a more traditional retailer.

Finally, there's always the option to drive a distance to Costco a few times a year for a major stock-up. It may not be something you can do every month, but you may be surprised at how you're able to work the occasional Costco trip into your schedule.
