queen elizabeth visit to udaipur

54 years back, Her Royal Majesty, visited India just after independence in January 1961. She alongside Prince Philip landed at the Delhi airport and was greeted by the Indian President Mr. Rajendra Prasad and Premier Pandit Nehru. After her visit to Delhi, Jaipur and, Agra, she visited the Maharani of Udaipur . In Udaipur, The Queen of England was introduced to the members of Darbar who were dressed in traditional Rajasthani Paridhan including jewelry and iconic Safa Pagdi . The Queen and Duke also visited Shiv Niwas , the water palace.

A video coverage of the Queen’s visit to India was documented by British Pathé.

                              About British Pathé

In olden times, people used to rely on theaters for all the news of the world.

” Pathé News was a producer of newsreels and documentaries from 1910 until 1970 in the United Kingdom. Its founder, Charles Pathé, was a pioneer of moving pictures in the silent era. The Pathé News archive is known today as British Pathé”

                      -Wikipedia

British Pathé is considered as “one of the finest newsreel archives” in the world. It has a genuine collection of over 85,000 newsreel of historical and cultural importance.

The British Pathé YouTube channel consists of some bizarre, delightful and historical events from all around the world. From Fashion shows to war documentaries and from deaths of prominent personalities to some of the greatest inventions, it contains everything to keep you hooked. You might also come across some things first of their kind in their collection of documentaries.

The documentary featuring Queen’s visit is in three parts in which you can see how beautifully India and its monuments are captured. In the Reel- 2 of the documentary, Udaipur is featured and one can very well see how journalists, from all over the world, gathered in order to capture every moment. Moreover, local people can be seen in large numbers, sitting and waiting to catch one glimpse of the Queen.

Furthermore, while reading this, you might be wondering about the big, white statue of “The Queen” currently placed in The Saraswati Library, Gulab Bagh, so FYI, the statue is of Queen Victoria. She was entitled Empress of India on 1 May 1876. Queen Elizabeth II is Great-Great Granddaughter of Queen Victoria. The statue was removed immediately after Independence when a riot took place. It was then replaced by the statue of Gandhi Ji.

Here is the video featuring Queen’s visit to Udaipur:

Thirteen years after Mahatma Gandhi's death, Queen Elizabeth stood outside the spot of his cremation and took off her sandals. Her husband and Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, who was behind her, did the same. They replaced the footwear they were wearing with red velvet slippers before entering the memorial area.

Inside, the Queen would pay respect to the astute man who had fought her nation with non-violence. The Queen was the first British monarch to visit India in fifty years. Her grandfather King George V and Queen Mary had visited in 1911, decades before India got Independence. Elizabeth II had ascended the throne on February 6, 1952, after the death of her father King George VI.

The stay in the subcontinent, during which they'd also make visits to neighbouring Pakistan and Nepal, was a long one and would last more than a month. Everywhere the Queen went, thousands of people thronged the streets to get a glimpse.

In Delhi’s Rajpath, the Queen attended as guest-of-honour the Republic Day parade, which showcased India's fledgling military might. Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru also hosted an event at Ramlila Maidan to welcome the Queen, where she gave a speech in which she thanked India for the warm welcome. During the event, the Delhi Corporation gifted the queen a two-feet long model of the Qutub Minar made of elephant tusk. The Duke received a silver candelabra.

The Queen inaugurated the institute buildings of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences on January 27, where she also planted a sapling in the premises.

Before the Republic Day parade, the Queen and the Duke had visited Jaipur, where, as anticipated, they had got a royal welcome. The Queen even rode on an elephant with the then Maharaja of Jaipur Sawai Man Singh II in the courtyard of the Maharaja’s palace.

After spending a fortnight in Pakistan, the Queen returned to India and visited the Durgapur Steel Plant, which was set up just a few years earlier with the help of the UK. The Queen met the workers in the steel plant before heading to Calcutta.

The city provided the biggest welcome of the tour with people crowding the route from the airport to the governor's residence the Raj Bhavan, which was the palace of the Viceroy before India's capital was moved to Delhi in December, 1911.

During her stay in the city, the royal couple visited the Victoria Memorial built by Lord Curzon when he was the Viceroy from 1899 to 1905. Both the Queen and her husband were the great-great grandchildren of Queen Victoria, so for the both the site had a strong family interest. Horse racing organisation founded in 1847, The Royal Calcutta Turf Club, organised a race to felicitate the Queen. The prize money for the race was Rs 30,000. The Queen presented the cup to the owner of the winning horse, a wife of a local businessman.

During India’s mutinous events of 1857, the palaces seductively drifting on Udaipur’s Lake Pichola became an unexpected haven for a clutch of fleeing Europeans. The local ruler, Maharana Swaroop Singh, displayed his loyalty to the British by taking in the bedraggled bunch fleeing the rebellion at Neemuch. According to an observer, ‘the refugees were found in the last stage of destitution expecting no survival. Mehta Sher Singh and other Mewar officers made arrangements of palanquins, elephants, horses, carts and carriages. All English men, women and children were sent to Udaipur the same night.’ The ruler reputedly had all the boats in the city destroyed so the rebels could not reach the families in hiding. It’s an unusual chapter in the history of the now famed Lake Palace but, in a sense, prophetic of its future role as a hospitable sanctuary for far-flung visitors, from shahs to starlets.

Built between 1743–1746 as a summer pleasure palace by Maharana Jagat Singh, the Lake Palace was a marvel of its time even in a city filled with extraordinary buildings. Created using pure white marble hewn from the local quarry of Rajnagar and brought over 50 miles by bullock carts, the floating folly of the Mewar Sisodia dynasty was a mirage of royalty in retreat from the searing heat of the hot season. Supposedly built by the bon vivant prince for moonlit picnics with the comely ladies of the zenana away from prying eyes, the creation was extolled by James Tod in his volume  The Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan . He wonderingly described the rooms thus: ‘Nothing but marble enters into their composition; columns, baths, reservoirs, fountains, all are of this material, often inlaid with mosaics, and the uniformity pleasingly diversified by the light passing through glass of every hue.’

Descended from the great warrior and folk hero Maharana Pratap, the scourge of the Mughals, the Sisodia family is an ancient line whose members are considered guardians of the Mewar throne for deity ruler Shri Eklingji (an avatar of Lord Shiva). They are said to be the oldest ruling family in the world, with a tapestry of family history stretching back over 1,500 years over an astonishing 76 generations and lore attributing their roots to Surya, the sun god, whose emblem is seen all over the city. The water-strewn theatre of Udaipur is named for another ancestor, Udai Singh II, who in 1562 founded the city, which would become known as the Venice of the East. Having narrowly survived assassination as a child thanks to a devoted nursemaid who put her own son in his place with tragic results, Udai Singh left the much-besieged ancestral fort of Chittor to establish a new stronghold for his expanding court. The Pichola we see today is his work, after he flooded a village in order to make the pre-existing man-made lake made much larger.

Over the intervening centuries, it has seen a colourful cast of characters cross its shores, with a plethora of myths and ever more fanciful versions of its history conjured by the townsfolk who revel in the city’s romantic image. The other floating garden palace on its waters, called Jag Mandir, once harboured the Mughal prince Khurram before he was proclaimed Emperor Shah Jahan. It is said that the harmonious design of his old haunt inspired him when creating the Taj Mahal. Another lake legend is the story of a tightrope-walker being promised half the kingdom of Mewar by a drunken Maharana Jawan Singh in the 1830s if she could cross the water body on a rope. In true potentate fashion, the wily prince had the rope cut before she could make her triumph, with the story going that the poor lady cursed the family to heirlessness before she sank into the waves. It is notable that the next few generations almost entirely consisted of adopted sons.

Facing east to allow its devout residents to pray towards Surya, their divine ancestor, the Lake Palace shimmers with colonnaded terraces and courtyards of black and white marble, a whiff of Mughal meeting Mewar perfection of scale and form in each chamber. The culmination is the perfectly circular Upper Room, with its painted dome and its arabesques inlaid with glimmering stones. Over a century later, the building, then called Jag Niwas, had passed into a mausoleum-like state, with the French writer Pierre Loti describing it in his travelogue in 1900 as ‘slowly moldering in the damp emanations of the lake’. As well as the neglect, the style of the interiors, too, was found wanting – this time by the formidable Victorian explorer Fanny Bullock Workman. Cycling through India with her husband, the American adventuress wrote of the lake palaces witheringly as consisting of ‘an assortment of infirm European furniture, wooden clocks, coloured glass ornaments and children’s toys, all of which seems to the visitor quite out of place, where he would naturally expect a dignified display of Eastern splendour’.

Notwithstanding these doughty diktats, the palace continued to draw visitors with its ethereal allure. The nomadic theatre maestro Geoffrey Kendal (father of actress Felicity) sailed over to sit among the garden’s lotus ponds in 1950, and was surprised to find the space ‘completely deserted, its silence only broken by the humming of mosquitos’. Shortly afterwards however, the forlorn folly burst into the world’s line of sight with a 1961 visit by Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, their sojourn in Udaipur captured – elephants and all – in detail by court photographers KL Syed. The following year, royalty of a different kind descended on the sleepy lake in the soignée form of sisters Jacqueline Kennedy and Lee Radziwill, who were photographed boating into its Belgian mosaic-lined entrance hall sheathed in apricot and raspberry silks.

Image may contain Floor Flooring Indoors Interior Design Architecture Building Corridor Arch Couch and Furniture

Perhaps encouraged by the admiration of his illustrious guests, Maharana Bhagwat Singh converted the palace into a heritage hotel the following year – one of India’s earliest forays into princely hospitality. It was largely designed by American Didi Contractor, who wisely left the royal suites of Sajjan Niwas, Sarva Ritu Vilas, and Khush Mahal largely untouched in their atmosphere. ‘His Highness, you know, was a real monarch,’ she later wrote of the experience: ‘Really like kings always were. So one had a sense of being one of the last people to be an artist for the king. It felt the way one imagines it was like working in the courts of the Renaissance.’ A later chapter as a jewel in the treasury of Taj Hotels – after being leased by legendary hotelier, JRD Tata – has endured to the present day, ensuring that this palace of pleasure, with a 160-year-old heart-shaped mango tree still living at its centre, remains the most captivating place to wake up in on the subcontinent.

About Taj Lake Palace

Taj Lake Palace is an 18th-century former royal abode on Lake Pichola in Udaipur, a city in the state of Rajasthan, India. The structure has now converted into a luxury hotel.

History of Taj Lake Palace

The palace was built for Maharana Jagat Singh II between 1743 and 1746. There are various unproven stories about why the palace was built on Lake Pichola. One tale states that Jagat Singh II’s father, Maharana Sangram Singh II, forbade his son from living in another nearby island palace with women that he was entertaining at the time, so his son built a new lake palace instead.

Another version states that Jagat Singh II simply felt that the main Udaipur City Palace was too public a place in which to enjoy moonlight picnics with his female guests, so the lake palace was constructed as a more secluded retreat.

During the 20th century the palace gradually fell into disrepair and in the 1960s Maharana Bhagwat Singh decided to turn it into a luxury hotel, commissioning American architect Didi Contractor to design the venue. In 1971 the Taj Hotels group took over the hotel.

During its tenure as a royal palace, the building hosted various famous guests, including Jacqueline Kennedy, Lord Curzon (who served as Viceroy of India from 1899-1905), Queen Elizabeth and British actor Vivien Leigh. Its most famous time in the limelight, however, occurred in 1983, when it was used in the James Bond film Octopussy, based on British author Ian Fleming’s iconic spy series. The palace interior was used as the home of the title character, Octopussy, played by Swedish actor Maud Adams.

Other locations in Udaipur were also used in Octopussy, including Monsoon Palace (a hilltop palace overlooking the city), which portrayed the residence of the film’s villain, Kamal Khan, and Shiv Niwas Palace (another former royal residence now converted into a hotel), which acts as James Bond’s hotel. In the film, Bond (played by Roger Moore) can be seen checking-in to the hotel and later using the casino and eating dinner by the swimming pool. Jag Mandir, another palace built on Lake Pichola, was also used as Octopussy’s home in other scenes, mostly for exterior shots.

Taj Lake Palace today

Udaipur is frequently cited as one of the most romantic cities in the world and the Taj Lake Palace certainly helps add to the image. The lake setting, exquisitely manicured gardens and beautiful architecture have ensured that it remains a popular and widely acclaimed destination for those wanting a high-end stay in the city. And even if it’s out of budget, cruises on Lake Pichola are a must-do activity in Udaipur, meaning you can still catch a glimpse of Taj Lake Palace.

Getting to Taj Lake Palace

The hotel can only be reached by a private boat service that leaves from a dock near Udaipur City Palace. The service is only available to guests staying at the hotel, although – as above – you can still see the hotel’s dazzling exterior by taking a boat cruise on the lake.

Udaipur: Live like a royal at the Shiv Niwas Palace

By Kunal Bhatia and Shuvajit Payne

Udaipur Live like a royal at Shiv Niwas Palace heritage hotel

Capital of the erstwhile kingdom of Mewar, Udaipur boasts of a rich collection of Rajput architecture, of which the City Palace is the crowning jewel. An amalgamation of structures built over four centuries, parts of the City Palace today are a museum, a royal residence and two luxury hotels. Amongst the latter, is the spectacular Shiv Niwas Palace, steeped in history and grandeur.

Shiv Niwas Palace, Udaipur: Architectural Features

As we drive down the tree-lined pathway towards Shiv Niwas Palace, what strikes us immediately is its beautiful setting and distinctive form. Perched by the banks of Lake Pichola, overlooking verdant parks and the distant hills, the crescent-shaped palace rises majestically. Its curved pastel walls finished in lime-plaster bask in the afternoon sun and the hulking mass of the lower few storeys is delightfully countered by a series of delicate jharokhas, screens and chhatris that seem to form a crown at its very top.

Heading up a steep road, we pass through two imposing gateways, the Shambhu Pol and Shiv Pol, before finding ourselves in a large manicured terrace that overlooks the city below. It takes the crossing of another gateway, the Shiv Niwas Deodhi, before we finally reach the courtyard at the heart of the palace. With just two storeys that gracefully wrap around a central pool, the scale here is indeed a lot more intimate. On peering out of a jharokha though, we seem to be towering above the surroundings, all thanks to some playful topography. The palace was erected atop a ridge, which was then completely enclosed by massive walls, giving it an elevated and rather imposing outward appearance.

Shiv Niwas Palace, Udaipur: Historical Background

Originally built at the turn of the 20th century as a private residence by Maharana Fateh Singh, Shiv Niwas Palace was then converted into a royal guest house for visiting dignitaries by his son, Maharana Bhupal Singh. It has hosted royalty from across the world, including Queen Elizabeth II, the royal family of Nepal, the Shah of Iran and also Jacqueline Kennedy on her famed visit to India in 1962. In the early 1980s, the second storey of the palace was constructed and it was converted into a hotel by Maharana Bhagwat Singh. Later in the decade, Parul Zaveri and the late Nimish Patel of Ahmedabad-based firm Abhikram were appointed by Arvind Singhji, the current head of the House of Mewar, to undertake further works.

Shiv Niwas Palace, Udaipur: Luxurious Living

Birds chirp away through the day in the canopy of the two large trees that shade the palace's central courtyard. In the evenings, their tunes are replaced by that of ragas played by local musicians as candle-lit tables are setup around the pool. Overlooking this charming setting are Shiv Niwas Palace's 17 suites, each a bit different from the other in their furnishings and decor. While all the eight Terrace Suites on the first floor have their own private balcony in addition to an open-to-sky terrace, the six Royal Suites on the ground floor come with coloured-glass chandeliers of varying hues and a cosy, low-level baithak seating by their arched windows.

The three Imperial Suites, also on the ground floor, are the most spectacular accommodations available in Shiv Niwas Palace. Spread over 130 square metre each, these suites can be entered via their own private vestibule. Doors inlaid with ivory open into a formal living room, with a study on one side and a dining area on the other. The chequered black and white marble flooring is topped by beautiful carpets and antique wooden furniture. Dados with decorative flora and fauna motifs run across the walls while each doorway, arch and cornice are completely covered in intricate inlay work. The circular bedroom chambers have a domed ceiling and one of the Imperial Suites even has its own indoor fountain.

Shiv Niwas Palace, Udaipur: Fine Wine and Dine

While the Palace's restaurant Paantya maybe named after the Mewari word for ‘sitting in line by protocol', a common practice during the bygone era wherein invitees to royal feasts would be seated as per courtly customs, it today welcomes all guests for an indulgent meal. Miniature paintings from the Mewar school depicting courtly rituals, festivals and hunting scenes adorn the walls. Paantya serves a selection of dishes from across the world, with the local delicacies of laal maas and safed maas being the most sought-after.

Photo caption: Paantya serves a selection of dishes from across the world while Panera is the perfect spot to grab a sundowner

The decadence goes up a notch at the adjoining Panera, a gorgeous bar that takes its name from the storehouse of liquor and spirits in the royal household. With its cusped marble flooring, ornate chandeliers, inlay work, mirrors from F&C Osler Co of Birmingham and inviting period furniture, Panera is the perfect spot to grab a sundowner even as Raja Ravi Varma's original, life-size portraits of Maharana Pratap Singh and Maharana Amar Singh keep us company.

Shiv Niwas Palace, Udaipur: Royal Touches

A sense of regal legacy is kept alive across the property not only by its heritage and opulence, but also by the smaller touches throughout. Vividly painted frescos adorn many of the walls; hidden sculptures peep out behind doorways and around corners; chhatris on the grounds and terraces invite us to pause and appreciate the surroundings; framed photos of the rulers, both past and present adorn consoles and mantelpieces; and there's even a palace band that ceremonially performs each evening. The royal family themselves are not too far, living right next door in the adjoining Shambhu Niwas. We were nudged to keep an eye out for the marble fountain here; if its water is gushing then His Highness is in residence.

How to do Rajasthan like 007: inside Tatler ’s stay at Udaipur’s Floating Lake Palace

By Annabel Sampson

Maud Adams and Roger Moore in Octopussy

Maud Adams and Roger Moore in Octopussy (1983)

Udaipur is the ‘Venice of the East’. The land of lakes and weddings, of palaces and panoramic vistas… all very sugary sweet, until you encounter Octopussy’s coven in the marble Lake Palace. James Bond’s Octopussy – arguably one of the most outrageous Ian Fleming adaptations ever – was filmed there 40 years ago this June. The film brims with lithe, bikini-clad female acrobat warriors who answer to their leader and temptress-in-chief, Octopussy (played by Maud Adams). Viewers encounter Octopussy’s entourage for the first time splashing about in a shapely lagoon shrouded in bougainvillea. Reader, you can have breakfast there. As I did – for Octopussy’s lair is now a hotel run by the first-rate Taj Hotel Group. And no request, no matter how decadent, is too much, since the uniformed royal butlers in the hotel are descendants of the originals who served the Maharana.

Diana, Princess of Wales , Vivien Leigh, the late Queen Elizabeth II and Jackie Kennedy have all holidayed at the Floating Palace. The roll call of guests is as glamorous, possibly more glamorous, than Octopussy’s cohort itself. It was built as a summer pleasure palace for Maharana Jagat Singh II in 1743. It spreads across every last inch of Jag Niwas, the four-acre island, so it emerges pristine and rock-like from Lake Pichola. It’s located in the man-made lake between the City Palace and the cliff-top Monsoon Palace (the lair of the villain, Kamal Khan, in the film).

The Taj Lake Palace where Octopussy was filmed 40 years ago

As we disembark the water taxi (unlike Bond who arrived disguised as a crocodile), we are bathed in a surprising cascade of rose petals thrown from a balcony. We’ve made it: only guests are granted permission to the island and room rates are a small, not insignificant fortune. A ritzy, luxurious idleness is enforced – since a boat is the only means of entry or departure. Patak, a woman in an amethyst-coloured sari with Bollywood good looks, greets us warmly, as we take in the Belgian mosaics that line the entrance to the palace: ‘276 years old,’ she tells us – and in sparkling condition.

Inside the Taj Lake Palace a feast of mosaics and marble

Digestifs at the Taj Lake Palace

Patak leads us through the palace, past the scandalous Octopussy lagoon and the central sculpture garden, whose weathered carvings of Hindu gods ‘are as old as the palace itself,’ she says. No two rooms are the same: and the grand Maharini suite is certainly like no other (not least for its central bejewelled swing chair). It’s decadent and vast-in-size, befitting the wife of a Maharaja. Stained glass and sculptural carvings dominate. There’s even a chocolate camel, should one be royally peckish.

The pool – as opposed to the lagoon – is worthy of a Maharana (or an Octopussy): sheltered by a 160-year-old heart-shaped mango tree. ‘It has never been clipped,’ says Patak, ‘it just grows that way.’ Traditional Rajasthani artwork, with in-laid peacock designs, decorates part of the area. Everything marble – which we’re promised is from the same source as the Taj Mahal’s – ensures guests maintain their ice-cool demeanour round the clock. Poolside vistas, framed by meringue-like turrets, span the floating spa (charmingly located on a tugboat) and the gargantuan City Palace. Into the distance, there’s the Jag Mandir, a nearby royal pleasure and party island.

A Maharana's pool at the Taj Lake Palace

A Maharana's pool at the Taj Lake Palace

Naturally, there’s a shopping boutique in the palace – proffering emeralds and rubies. When I express enthusiasm for a particular Rajasthani jacket, I’m told that Judi Dench went for ‘the exact same one’. Ah, Judi of The Exotic Marigold Hotel ! Reportedly, the CEO of Starbucks was there the week before. When I crassly ask how many famous people have walked these marble floors, Patak giggles, answering simply: ‘ many ’. That’s not to mention the dozens of models and 200 cast members, crew and stuntmen and women who descended 40 years ago for filming.

As we sit in one creamy cupola overlooking the City Palace as dusk descends, an American guest (the Lake Palace is very popular with American tourists) approaches brandishing an iPad: ‘Did you know a Bond Girl was sat exactly where you are now?’ He proceeds to share a slideshow of images of the film juxtaposed alongside his own palace photography. It occurs to me that the Lake Palace must attract a lot of James Bond anoraks.

Come dusk (and dawn), the birds congregate in the thousands: on any given day there are kingfishers, hornbills, egrets, pelicans and occasionally a great cormorant or a pheasant-tailed jacana (among the many millions of pigeons – the only island intruders). It’s quite a chorus. Enough to require a full-time pigeon flag man who patrols, with his big yellow flag emblazoned with the silhouette of a bird, as guests take their breakfast in the mornings. Despite the birds, I can just about make out the hum of a distant wedding party going on at the Oberoi Udaivillas across the water – where Isha Ambani (daughter of India’s richest man) was married, with a private performance by Beyoncé, in 2018.

Breakfast is a treat: everything you’d expect, plus an exceptional platter of puddings that would elevate any mealtime (banana bread, lemon pistachio cake, creamed buns). The food is exceptional – different restaurants offer different cuisines. But, as a rule, I say when in India eat Indian food: and the Neel Kamal, proffering the flavours of Udaipur was exceptional (even if the location wasn’t as pretty as on the rooftop restaurant, Bhairo, which serves European food).

The business of James Bond is a big one. And 40 years on it is still working wonders in Udaipur, as pilgrims flock to its palaces for the ultimate filmic experience.

Scott Dunn offers a 14 night ‘Ultimate Rajasthan’ itinerary from £5,700 per person based on two people sharing on B&B basis and includes a stay at The Oberoi Rajvilas and Taj Lake Palace. For more information please visit www.scottdunn.com or call 020 8682 5060

12 Unforgettable Things to Do in Udaipur – The Venice of the East

By: Author Sophie Pearce

This post may contain affiliate links. Please see my disclosure policy for details.

Rajasthan has my heart but Udaipur truly has my soul.

It’s straight from the pages of a bohemian romantic fairy tale and you will feel like royalty as you wander around the breathtaking Lake Pichola.

Udaipur is more like a mood and you will surely follow its rhythm while you’re here.

It’s often called the Venice of the East due to the 5 gorgeous lakes, romantic atmosphere, and pleasant weather.

You will fall in love with the mysticism, the floating palaces, the architecture, and the life force that runs through this city.

These are all the unmissable things to do in Udaipur!

things to do in udaipur rajasthan

12 unmissable things to do in Udaipur

1. feel the breeze of the majestic lake pichola.

There are many lakes in Udaipur but Lake Pichola stands the test of time by being one of the most romantic lakes in the East.

The sparkling waters surrounded by the Aravalli mountain range create a cool breeze that has a certain magic to it.

Add on the fact that it boasts a majestic floating palace in the middle and you’ve landed in a dream world!

Although there isn’t a specific route to explore Lake Pichola, the many Ghats which are pick-pocketed around provide a great panoramic view of it all.

Ambrai Ghat is the best for a view of the Taj Lake Palace in the open garden nearby.

2. Check into the Taj Lake Palace

This will cost you a pretty penny but how many times in your life can you say you’ve made residence on a floating palace?!

Only accessible by boat from the royal dock, this hotel is up there as one of the best in the entire world.

Its white archways laced with bougainvilleas create a spectacular retreat.

Famous for its feature in the James Bond movie Octopussy , it was originally built as a summer palace for the Maharana of Udaipur (Maharaja being a king that was defeated in battle and a Maharana being undefeated).

Even in the peak temperatures of Indian summer, the whirlwind breezes create a cool respite.

When you check in, you’re made to feel like royalty. The Taj group cannot be beaten in service and during my stay, they outdid themselves as I had quite a few calamities.

Check out ‘Checking in: Taj Lake Palace, Udaipur’ for a full review and some funny travel faux pas I made!

3. Step back in time at the Udaipur City Palace

Out of all the city palaces in Rajasthan, Udaipur City Palace is by far my favourite.

There’s just so much colour and character in every room.

It certainly packs out during peak season and sometimes the narrow corridors to make your way through can get claustrophobic!

The views of the lake and beyond are spectacular and you can spend at least a few hours here enjoying the grandeur.

Be sure to check out their restaurant and bar on the exit, I sipped a delicious rose flavour Gin and Tonic.

4. Take a boat ride on Lake Pichola

It’s almost criminal to visit Udaipur and not take a boat ride on Lake Pichola .

Here, you can get up close and personal with famous sights and luxury hotels.

I booked my boat tour through the city palace and rode at sunset. You’ll be paying more for a sunset cruise, but it’s totally worth it for the colours the setting sun makes on the city palace and houses on the lake!

I fell in love with it and couldn’t stop snapping my camera. It was a golden hour on steroids.

Things to do in Udaipur City Guide | Third Eye Traveller

Typically the boats do a 360 turn and pull up at the Jag Mandir which sits across from the Lake Palace.

Here, you can have a look around for as long as you like.

After the sun has set behind the mountains, it creates an awesome purple glow in the sky. A beautiful backdrop for the skyline.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

5. Watch the sunset at the Monsoon Palace

Another beautiful place is perched on a hill towering above the city. You can make your way up by Land Rover from the booking office or take a breathless hike to the top.

Amazingly, you’ll be waiting for a 5-minute sunset. But, it’s 5 minutes worth waiting for.

I almost missed the whole thing as I was busy snapping the views from the other side!

Luckily the kind security guard pointed me in the right direction.

Watch out for the monkeys that play mischief here, they’ll be on the prowl for all things shiny and edible. They will also sit on top of your car and refuse to leave!

The winter season in Rajasthan creates a romantic orange glow at sunset and luckily these guys were the perfect muse for photos.

things to do in Udaipur City Guide | Third Eye Traveller

6. Grab a cheap Tali at Neelam’s restaurant

It’s the number one place to eat on Tripadvisor but Neelam still charges next to nothing for her homemade Tali.

A typical Tali consists of two Indian vegetarian dishes, dal (lentils), chutney, chapatis, and rice!

It’s a massive meal and it only costs 150 rupees which is perfect for the budget-conscious traveller.

Neelam makes all her food herself and the service has a friendly guest house feel to it.

You can find her place behind the Jagdish temple. You and your wallet won’t regret it!

things to do in Udaipur City Guide | Third Eye Traveller

7. Visit the Jagdish temple

Sitting in the middle of Main Street by the City Palace, the Jagdish temple is a beautiful place to visit.

It was built in 1561 and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu the creator of the world.

It is still actively used for Hindu worship today, so remember to dress appropriately.

The carvings are the most spectacular part of the architecture here and tell the stories of the creation of the universe.

It was so peaceful walking around here and listening to the Bhajans being sung.

Remember to take your shoes off and not bring your camera inside as photography is strictly prohibited.

things to do in Udaipur City Guide | Third Eye Traveller

8. Let the Bagore Ki Haveli dance show bedazzle you

This fun and lively cultural show will transport you all over Rajasthan to watch in wonder at the different dancing styles, puppet shows, and religious prose along with traditional music.

The vibrant costumes in all different colours make a real statement on the stage.

The dancing is the most impressive part and you’ll see the Chari dance with pots of fire placed in their heads!

The ladies are all so beautiful. The most prestigious however was a 70-year-old lady, who balanced and danced with 7 heavy pots on her head! It was aging goals.

I kept thinking, I can hardly sit with my legs crossed for an hour yet without fidgeting and she can carry all those pots, walk-on glass, and dance?! Crazy.

It packs out almost every night, even in the off-season, so get in the queue promptly at 6.15 pm to guarantee a ticket and a good seat. Shows are from 7-8 pm daily.

Things to do in Udaipur City Guide | Third Eye Traveller

9. Dine like royalty at Upré

There are many luxury dining options to choose from by Lake Pichola, but nothing quite beats Upré.

You can lounge on their royal cots overlooking gorgeous views of the lake and city palace.

Food is midrange to high in price but the flavours, quality, and service are so worth it!

In high season it is worth making a reservation here to save waiting. The service and location make you feel like Maharani with a feast for a queen!

things to do in Udaipur City Guide | Third Eye Traveller

10. Ride the ropeway to the Karni Mata temple

Another way to get an aerial view of the city and beyond is to visit the Karni Mata temple via the ropeway.

I wouldn’t recommend walking up the hill as there are warning signs for panthers and cobras everywhere.

Tickets are 97 rupees return (I’ve never understood these figures as anyone ever has those 3 rupees change, they usually just give sweets).

It’s a hot ride to the top and there is a typical Indian queue to wait in line and by that I mean there really isn’t one!

Despite the ride, the views from this side are outstanding and it’s worth sticking around a while getting a birds-eye view of the whole city and beyond.

On the way back, you will need to hand your ticket to the ropeway counter and receive a number.

Once your number is called on the tannoy, you can go back down via the cable car.

It took around 15-20 minutes in peak season for my number to be called, but there’s a good café nearby to pass the time with a cold drink.

things to do in Udaipur City Guide | Third Eye Traveller

11. Visit the Ahar Cenotaphs

This place is a little-known secret in Udaipur city centre which is located a few kilometres away from the tourist hub of Lake Pichola.

It’s a labyrinth of archways and has cenotaphs for days.

You can visit at sunrise and watch the rays of first morning light slowly cover them in a golden glow.

Be warned that there is a fee for photos by the security guard who runs a little monopoly on the side.

I guess this is India and a business can be found anywhere.

Click here to read my complete guide for the cenotaphs here!

Things to do in Udaipur City Guide | Third Eye Traveller

12. Take a day trip out of the city

After you’ve ticked off all the things to do in Udaipur is fantastic but the majority of it can be covered in one to two days.

After that, there are a wealth of day trips you can organise out of the city for a cheap price.

You can visit the beautiful living fort at Chittorgarh , marvel at the unique carvings in the Ranakpur Jain Temple, or climb Khumbarlargh fort ; the second largest in the world (the first being the Great Wall of China).

Private taxis should be around 2000 rupees for a full day tour or you can go on a sharing tour for 600/700 rupees per person.

Khumbarlargh fort and the Ranakpur Jain Temple you can cover together in one full day trip and Chittorgarh you can cover in another day as both are in polar opposite directions of Udaipur!

Udaipur City Guide | Third Eye Traveller

So, that’s all the best things to do in Udaipur!

So, these are my personal 12 things to do in Udaipur. But, there are plenty more things to get up to in this romantic city of lakes.

There are still so many nooks and crannies of Lake Pichola I haven’t explored and cafés I haven’t had chai in yet.

It’s a city that will make you want to come back for more and I plan to do just that!

You might be happy to add - the sahastrabahu temple ( it is quite hidden and marvelous enough to throw one off schedule very easily) and of course the lake before it ; it is surrounded by mountains and below the lake, The winding road down takes you to - the most famous only one in the country EklingJi temple.... said to be anywhere between 2000 to 3000 years old but, it is clearly the oldest in entire Udaipur regions. There are many other things and places and ancient sites on both sides of the highway of Udaipur.... Just have lots of time and water with you 🙂

Rainbow Restaurant:

Rainbow Restaurant is a great place for a sundowner. Grab a Pizza and a brew while enjoying the beautiful sunset over the banks of Lake Pichola overlooking the Aravalli mountains. The restaurant’s quirky decor, cute cushion mattress tables, candlelight set up and amazing playlist liven up the place. We loved the Margherita Pizza, Chicken Lasagne and Café Mocha here.

Jagat Niwas Rooftop Restaurant:

Housed in Jagat Niwas Haveli, the plush whitewashed restaurant feels no less than a palace. The picturesque view from the beautiful arched windows is like no other.

Pick a window table in this nautical black-and-white dining area and you can enjoy a sweeping view of Lake Pichola. The menu ranges from traditional Indian to modern cuisine. Bharwa Aaloo kebabs and Yakhni Pulao is a must try. The pricing may feel a bit steep, but the good food, attentive service and breath-taking view warrants an amazing experience here.

Café Ambrai:

It’s hard to beat the lake view from this Eurpoean-esque cafe. The in-house café of Amet Haveli, Café Ambrai offers an envious view of the magnificent Taj Lake Palace, Gangaur Ghat and City Palace over the lake. The cafe features an array of Indian, Chinese and Continental cuisines. The views early in the morning are just as beautiful at sunset. The service is a tad slow but the view makes up for it and while you wait for the food, strike a pose or two 😊We visited for breakfast on 2 separate occasions and preferred the English Breakfast Platter & Aaloo Paratha.

Jheel Café:

Divided into two sections, ground and top floor, Jheel Café is popular among tourists and locals.  Situated right next to the lake, grab an outdoor table on a clear day. The rooftop section is quite pretty too. Weekends may have waiting, so a reservation is recommended. We visited early in the morning and had the entire outdoor section to ourselves. The café ticks all the right boxes with regards to the lake view, the coffee and the desserts but came up short on the food/ snacks which can afford a skip. The Nutella Hot Chocolate & walnut brownie here is heaven😊

Upre Restaurant:

Upre meaning “upstairs” in Mewari is one of the most popular rooftop restaurants in Udaipur offering expansive views of Gangaur Ghat and Bagore ki Haveli.  When the sun goes down, the city lights glowing from afar make Upre the perfect place to cozy up for a date night.  Among Indian, Continental and Chinese cuisines, the menu also includes a variety of authentic Rajasthani dishes. A visit here can be a worthy splurge. Do try Laal Maas and Chicken Malai Kebab. Fish and chips were plain ordinary. If you are planning for a candlelight dinner with your loved one, I’d recommend to book a table well in advance. Reservations strongly recommended.

Address: Hotel Lake Pichola, Outside ChandPole.

Sun & Moon Cafe, Places to eat in Udaipur

Sun & Moon Café:

Sun & Moon Café claims to be the highest rooftop restaurant in Udaipur. During the day, this restaurant transforms itself into a pinterest-y café of Greece with walls splashed in white with a pop of orange and turquoise. The bright and colourful lights from the lakeside hotels gleaming over the waters of the lake at night offer a serene view especially if you are enjoying a glass of wine over at the terrace. The Food is nothing to write home about. Visit this place for a drink or two while you witness the city lights go on when the sun goes down.

Address: Rooftop of Banjara Hostel / Treebo Udai Niwas, near Jagdish Temple Road.

Shamiana at Hotel Sarovar:

The view is as good as Upre with a little less fancy ambience. The food is worth the praises; Laal Maas, Butter Naan, Mutton Pulao are some of the dishes we loved. Shamiana is housed on the roof of Hotel Sarovar which offers some of the best lake facing rooms at a bargain.

Jaiwana Haveli:

Many hotels claim to offer the best lake view rooftop restaurants but one that fits the bill is Jaiwana Haveli. Breathtaking views can be enjoyed from the interiors of this hotel through its floor-to-ceiling windows, or from the outdoor patio. The checked flooring, the metal chairs and the unobstructed views of the Lake Palace sets up a perfect dine with a view vibe. Try Indian Thali that is generously filled with veg curries, dal, rice, chapati, salad and a sweet dish.

Want a place with a view but away from the bustling area of Lake Pichola? Head to Tribute, a restaurant facing Swaroop Lake. The restaurant is a tribute to Chetak, the legendary horse of Maharana Pratap. Visit this pretty restaurant in the evening and grab a table at their huge outdoor patio. The menu consists of North Indian, Continental, and the ethnic curries of Rajasthan. Must Try: Laal Maas and Mutton Pulao.

Any Trip to Udaipur is incomplete without a visit to this iconic Thali restaurant. Natraj Dining has been serving Indian thali for years without compromising on taste & quality. The Unlimited Thali is worth the calories that it comes with. The rotational basis menu ensures that each time you visit, you are treated to a different variety of mouth-watering dishes. If you happen to visit during the summers, you’ll love the Aam Ras they serve.  Priced at Rs 350++ this is definitely our favorite Thali Restaurant in Udaipur. Due to its over popularity, the place is always crowded, expect a delay in services.

Neelam Restaurant:

Dining at restaurants is not unusual while travelling, but finding homemade food is a challenge. Must-Try: Masala Kadhi Chawal and Bhendi Masala.

Olive & Cheese Sandwich and Iced Coffee made for good munchies while we lost ourselves in the good conversation here. They also have wifi available making it easier for travellers to perch for hours, working from this colourful café.

Café Satori:

The “No strings attached” blackboard on a broken guitar in the street caught my attention. This street side café is always buzzing with tourists and coffee lovers. The outdoor seating is usually packed but regularly interrupted by the loud honkin from the street. The indoor section on the other hand is more peaceful & rather beautiful. The low sofa seating, walls adorned with portraits and quirky quotes and interesting books can keep anyone indoors for hours. The coffee is good and the food is average at best. But, I think the most fascinating concept of this café is “Suspended Coffee”, a tradition borrowed from Naples, Italy.

Suspended Coffee involves a customer buying a cup of coffee for the needy who can’t afford one themselves.

At Satori, For any suspended order, the customer only has to pay 70% of the offered price, the remaining 30% is offered by the cafe.

Foodstalls at Fateh Sagar Lake:

Fateh Sagar is a beautiful lake in Udaipur and draws in many tourists throughout the day. The lake is dotted with numerous food stalls serving quick bites, refreshments and beverages. Kulhad Chai and Coffee at Vinod Fast Food are popular here and these warm beverages are great especially when there is a nip in the air.

Address: Opp Fateh Sagar Lake

Important Tips for places to eat in Udaipur:

Most of the restaurants are on rooftops of 3-5 floors Hotels with no lifts, so be prepared to climb a few flights of stairs.

Not all seats in the restaurants with views are near windows. If you’re going for the view, ask for a reservation near a window or walk-in before the sunset to get yourself a nice table. There might be waiting during the weekends, please secure a table with reservations.

All the restaurants were visited on my own during my last two trips to Udaipur and as such all the above opinions are based on my own experiences.

Until then,

Jagniwas – The story of Taj Lake Palace, Udaipur

Taj Lake Palace, Udaipur - Luxury Hotels

The young Prince Jagat Singh requested his father, Maharana Sangram Singh II (r. 1710 – 1734), if he could reside in Jagmandir with his wives. However as Pardah system was prevalent at that period of time in Mewar, Maharana Sangram Singh II did not allow the Prince to reside in Jagmandir, as he would not like to embarrass his daughter in laws with his frequent visit there. Hence, he gave permission to his son to build Jagniwas. This building was later constructed by Maharana Jagat Singh II (r. 1734 – 1751 CE), 62nd Custodian of House of Mewar, between 1743 – 1746 CE. The Palace was used as summer retreat by the Mewar Royal family over the years.

Later, Jagniwas was converted into a Heritage Hotel by Maharana Bhagwat Singh Mewar of Udaipur (r. 1955 – 1984 CE), 75th Custodian of The House of Mewar, in February 1963 under the company The Lake Palace Hotels and Motels Private Limited, Udaipur. This brought Udaipur on the tourist world map and people from all over the world, rich and mighty, Head of States and Hollywood actors started flocking to Udaipur to experience the living in a luxury hotel on an island in the lake. This is so because one can hardly notice the land on which it is built on, especially when the lake is full. In 1971 on 1st April, Maharana Bhagwat Singh Mewar inked a deal with The Indian Hotels Company Ltd., Bombay, The Taj Group of Hotels and now it is called The Taj Lake Palace Hotel.

Architecture and Design

By the time Jagniwas was built, Udaipur was well established and had its own style of construction and you could call it Maharana Sangram Singh II (r.1710 – 1734 CE) style. During his reign a lot of construction was carried out in The City Palace, Udaipur. Jagniwas a jewel floating in the Lake Pichola is a beautiful building made of marble, with cupolas, domes, bastions, balconies and ornamental turrets. The material used is local marble from Rajnagar, about 66 kms from Udaipur, brought to Udaipur in bullock carts.

The construction technique is mainly Mewar / Rajput architecture with may be some Mughal architectural influence, but beautifully assimilated into local designs. Even some designs were copied from the Forts of Chittorgarh and Kumbhalgharh, this former fort was built in the pre-medieval period and the later fort was built by Maharana Kumbha (r. 1433 – 1468 CE), under the architect Mandan Bhardwaj.

Lake Pichola

It is one of the oldest lakes amongst all the other city lakes. It was constructed 600 years ago, during the reign of Maharana Lakha (r. 1382 - 1421 CE) by Chhitar ji Banjara. This lake is situated in the south western part of the city at 73040'E longitude and 24034' N. latitude. It derives its name from the village 'Picholi'. It is a probability that it was started from Dhud Talai. During the reign of Maharana Udai Singh II (r. 1537 – 1572 CE), in 1560, the lake was substantially enlarged by

constructing dams across two upper streams. It accounts for a total water body area around 6.96 sq. Kms and has gross, live and dead capacities of 483,318 and 165 mcft, respectively. Its gauge height above and below sill level is 3.35 meters and 5.2 meters. The lake has a maximum depth of 10.5 meters. It is interconnected with Goverdhan Sagar, Dudh Talai, Swarup Sagar, Rang Sagar and Kumariya Talab.

Anecdotes about the Palace across the years

The lake has dried a few times over the last few hundred years, but not very often and the last time it happened was in 2005 - 2006. There was an American Tourist who arrived sometime in the month of July 2005 in the evening and was driven to The Lake Palace. He left a message at the reception counter that he wanted a car at 6 am as he was going out early to Kumbhalgarh. In the morning, the reception called him and told him that his boat was waiting to take him to the shore; he was little annoyed and said, what would he do with the boat when there is no water in the lake. To his astonishment he was informed that it rained heavily at night and that the Hotel is surrounded by water on all sides. There are more such stories like that.

The shooting of the Hollywood James Bond film ‘Octopussy’ took place in 1983 and that made Lake Palace world famous. Subsequently some Bollywood Hindi films were also shot here, like ‘Mera Saaya’ and so on many more till today.

1. From the time of Maharana Jagat Singh II (r. 1734 – 1751 CE) until Maharana Bheem Singh (r. 1778 – 1828 CE) only members of the Mewar Royal family stayed at Jagniwas.

2. Maharana Bhupal Singh (r. 1930 – 1955 CE) shifted Mehkma Khas; his Secretariat, to Jagniwas.

Rising like a mirage from Lake Pichola, the white-marble-and-mosaic Taj Lake Palace Hotel beckons to travelers. The palace itself dates back to 1746, when it was built by Maharana Jagat Singh II. Today, guests are treated like royalty by an entourage of palace butlers who ensure that every creature comfort is provided. The Jiva Spa draws rich idioms from millennia-old Indian wellness and healing therapies, resulting in a menu of aromatherapy massages, body scrubs and wraps that are sure to rejuvenate even the weariest body. From mid-October to mid-April, the hotel’s rooftop Bhairo restaurant is open and serves contemporary European cuisine with spectacular palace lake and views.

Taj Lake Palace features in my top 10 lists of the best luxury hotels in India , the world’s best historic hotels , the  world’s most magnificent castle hotels , and  luxury hotels made famous by movies .

PROS & THINGS I LIKE

  • Taj Lake Palace Hotel calls the city of Udaipur its home. Founded in 1553 by Maharana Udai Singh II as the new capital of the Mewar, Udaipur is regarded as the most romantic city of India . Set amidst the Aravalli Ranges, Udaipur is known for its picturesque lakes and often dubbed ‘the city of lakes’ or ‘Venice of the East’. The elevated hills and the beautiful lakes make a picture-perfect backdrop to the city’s historic buildings and narrow alleys. Udaipur is one of the most sought after tourist destinations in India , because of its lakes, forts, palaces, temples, gardens, colorful fairs and festivals. Udaipur is easily accessible by rail, road and air from all the major cities and towns of India (including New Delhi, Mumbai and Jaipur).
  • Taj Lake Palace is located smack in the middle of a tiny island in Lake Pichola, across from Udaipur’s larger City Palace. One of the popular sightseeing places in Udaipur, Lake Pichola is an artificial fresh water lake, built in year 1362 AD by a Banjara tribesman – Pichhu Banjara – who used to transport grain during the reign of Maharana Lakha. With its white walls and picturesque domes rising from the tranquil blue waters, Taj Lake Palace is a marble fantasy that floats magically on the lake . The hotel is only accessible via a romantic ride on a little wooden boat (offered on a complimentary basis by the hotel); the boat dock is located next to Udaipur’s most famous attraction, the City Palace.
  • The property is a former summer palace of the royal dynasty of Mewar, now turned into a world-famous luxury hotel. The young Prince, Maharana Jagat Singh (1709-1751) requested his father, Maharana Sangram Singh II, if he could reside in the pleasure palace Jagmandir with his ladies. The Maharana did not give permission, but taunted his son that if he was so keen to stay in an Island Palace, why doesn’t he build one for himself. It is this taunt that made him build his own pleasure palace on Lake Pichola in the year 1743. The palace continued to serve as the summer residence of the Maharanas of Udaipur until 1955, and in 1959 reconstruction work began to convert the palace into a hotel.
  • The hotel’s elegant decor retains much of its original palace charm. There are several marble terraces, which are lined by successions of arched galleries and traditional domed cupolas, while magnificent whitewashed courtyard are filled with tropical foliage, picturesque fountains, and water ponds. The stylish interiors are equally striking and rich in detail, with decorative plaster-relief, intricate corbels, timber grid ceilings, and delicate frescos. In contrast, the hotel furniture has been kept simple so as not to make the spaces overpowering. Traditional colorways are introduced in the wall’s panelings (finished with milk paint and distemper) and in the rich fabrics (most of which were sourced locally).
  • Taj Lake Palace Hotel has 65 sumptuously decorated rooms and 18 grand suites , which are spread over the several wings of the building. Druing my visit, I was upgraded to one of the hotel’s highest room categories, a grand royal suite named Mayur Mahal (or Peacock Palace). The stunning suite featured a entrance hall, a sitting area overlooking Lake Pichola, a grand bedroom with four-poster bed and salon, and a spacious bathroom equipped with double vanity, Jacuzzi, and separate shower and toilet cubicles. The suite exuded a regal ambience with marble floors, exquisite Rajasthani artwork, and walls with glass mosaic peacock motifs. The colored glass window panels changed the mood in the room with the shifting sunrays.
  • The gorgeous hotel features several leisure & wellness facilities , all centered close to one another in the southeastern part of the property. There’s a lovely (if a little small) outdoor courtyard pool, surrounded by lovely latticework arcades with terrific views of Udaipur’s City Palace across Lake Pichola. The pool is lined by a row of chic white sun loungers (although the courtyard is in the shade for most of the afternoon). Next to the pool is a small but well-equipped gym with with treadmills and free weights. Around the corner of the pool courtyard is a spa (called the Java Spa), which offers a blend of classic therapies that help guests to achieve inner peace and a soothing state of mind.
  • Along with 24-hour room service, the hotel features three chic restaurants plus a lovely bar . Amrit Sagar (aptly named ‘sea of nectar’) is a stylish bar offering a selection of vintage wines, spirits and cigars. Jharoka (located on the ground floor) is the main all-day dining restaurant and offers European, Asian, and Indian cuisine; Neel Kamal (located next to Jharoka) is open only at dinnertime and serves authentic flavors of the royal cuisine of Udaipur, as well as signature dishes from India; and Bhairo is a seasonal rooftop restaurant (operating during winter only) offering exquisite contemporary European cuisine. Romantic private dinners can be arranged on the hotel grounds or out on the hotel’s century-and-a-half-old boat, the Gangaur.
  • The hotel is managed by Taj Hotels & Resorts since 1971, and over the years they have truly perfected the experience. A curation of authentic living palaces, landmark hotels, resorts and safaris, Taj is one of the two leading hotel brands in India (the other one being Oberoi). The brand is recognized for its warm and intuitive service and is the undisputed leader in Indian hospitality. As of today, the company operates a total of 100 hotels and hotel-resorts, with 84 across India and 16 in other countries, including Bhutan, Malaysia, Maldives, Nepal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, UAE, UK, USA and Zambia. The Taj group has been converting royal palaces in India into luxury hotels since the 1970s.
  • It may sound cliché but service at the palace is Maharaja-worthy and guests are treated like royalty , as you would expect from the Taj brand. And it all starts with a royal welcome: a shower of rose petals and platter of refreshments greets guests as they get off the boat at reception area, after which they are escorted under a sequined, embroidered umbrella to a traditional welcome. Every room comes with round-the-clock butler service. The butlers ensure that every creature comfort is provided and can arrange anything, such as creating specialized dining experiences at many of the hotel’s romantic settings. The “Royal Butlers” in the hotel are descendants of the original palace retainers.
  • Taj Lake Palace Hotel was used as a key location in the Bond film Octopussy (1983), in which actor Roger Moore alias James Bond swims up to the ‘floating palace’, populated only by attractive women. Since its prominent feature in the Hollywood movie, the property has somewhat become an iconic attraction in India, hosting hundreds of dignitaries and celebrities over the years, from Jackie  Jackie Kennedy, Hillary Clinton, and Brad Pitt, to Angelina Jolie, Beyonce and Queen Elizabeth II and practically every royal family to date. The Taj Lake Palace was also the scene of the world’s second most expensive wedding in 2018, when India’s richest man, Mukesh Ambani’s daughter Isha Ambani married 33-year-old real estate giant Anand Piramal.

CONS & THINGS TO KNOW

Taj Lake Palace is one of India’s most iconic hotels. A stay here will be a memory for a lifetime, but the property is not perfect and here is why:

  • The opulent decor and antique interiors may not be to everyone’s taste. In addition, some of the guest rooms feel ‘old’, though, of course, that is exactly the point of staying here. Still, the hotel has several areas (e.g. rooms, restaurants, spa) which could use a refurbishment , and which could be done without losing any of the palace’s authentic charms.
  • There are a lot of pigeons nesting in the hotel’s nooks and crannies (something I found to be a problem in the entire city of Udaipur). There are so many pigeons in fact that their droppings are problematic in certain hotel areas, although the hotel staff is addressing the problem by spanning nets over some courtyards.
  • Make sure to do some research prior to booking as sometimes in the dry season the water can completely disappear from Lake Pichola.
  • The hotel is only accessible via a short boat ride from Udaipur’s city center, which will be a huge pro for most travelers, although some may not like the feeling of being ‘trapped on an island’ (although the boats run 24/7).
  • The hotel’s fitness center and pool are small , since the hotel designers and architects had to work within the constraint of existing structures in the heritage building.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

The best time to visit Udaipur is between October and March, when the weather is warm, sunny, and dry. Increasing temperatures in April and May can result in excellent value trips, but you can expect high humidity and thunderstorms. The monsoon season starts from July and extends till September and is best avoided.

HOW TO GET THERE

Taj Lake Palace is a 45 min drive from Udaipur’s Maharana Pratap Airport . Transfers can be arranged via the resort.

Why do you post every picture twice or even three times?

Nice looking hotel, would want to stay there when the lake is full, otherwise would be a bit strange.

Duke and Duchess of Sussex to visit Nigeria in May after Meghan learnt of her heritage

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are to make a joint trip to Nigeria in May 2024, it has been confirmed.

The country’s defence headquarters expressed its “honour and delight” that the Sussexes had accepted an invitation for a visit. They are expected to meet military servicemen and women and be hosted at an “array of cultural activities” for a trip linked to the Invictus Games .

On Sunday, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau published a letter in which he said the visit would “consolidate Nigeria’s strong hold” of the games, as well as the “possibility of hosting the event [in] later years”.

Further details will be confirmed by the Sussexes’ office nearer the time.

Nigerian Misan Harriman , the couple’s friend and favoured photographer, acknowledged the news on X, formerly Twitter, with a heart and flag emoji, raising speculation that he may travel with them to capture the trip.

Prince Harry is travelling to London to take part in a 10th anniversary service for the Invictus Games at St Paul’s Cathedral on May 8. Meghan is not thought to be attending.

‘43 per cent Nigerian’

In 2022, the Duchess told her podcast listeners that she had recently discovered she was “43 per cent Nigerian” after doing a genealogy test.

At the opening ceremony of the 2023 Invictus Games in Dusseldorf, Germany , the Duke made reference to the link as he hailed Nigeria – along with Colombia and Israel – for sending its first delegation to the games for injured, sick and wounded veterans.

“Now, I’m not saying we play favourites in our home, but since my wife discovered she is of Nigerian descent , it’s likely to get a little bit more competitive this year,” he said.

It will be one of few overseas tours the couple have done since leaving the Royal family. In January 2024 they visited Jamaica for the premiere of the Bob Marley film One Love, and they undertook what was described as a quasi-royal tour to New York in September 2021.

They have also appeared at Invictus Games events in the Netherlands and, most recently, Canada. The Duchess has not travelled to the UK since the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022.

The King and Queen, then the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, last visited Commonwealth country Nigeria in 2018.

Imperial couple to visit Britain in June in first trip to country since '22

Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako attend an event in Tokyo on Friday.

Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako are making preparations to visit Britain as state guests in late June, the Imperial Household Agency said Saturday.

The upcoming visit will be the second full overseas visit by the couple since the Emperor's accession to the throne in 2019, after their trip to Indonesia last year.

The emperor and the empress were slated to visit Britain in 2020 at the invitation of Queen Elizabeth II, but that was postponed amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Earlier this year, King Charles III invited the couple again to Britain, according to the agency.

During the one-week visit, the emperor and the empress are scheduled to attend a welcoming event and banquet at Buckingham Palace, people familiar with the matter said. They are also expected to visit the University of Oxford, where they studied, and inspect River Thames transportation, which the emperor has researched.

The imperial family and the British royal family have a close relationship. When Emperor Emeritus Akihito, father of the current emperor, was crown prince, he attended the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on behalf of then-Emperor Hirohito, father of the emperor emeritus and posthumously known as Emperor Showa.

Emperor Showa and his wife, Empress Kojun, visited Britain as state guests in 1971, while Akihito and Empress Michiko were invited were invited to Britain as state guests in 1998.

When King Charles III was the prince of Wales, he attended the accession ceremonies for Akihito and also for Emperor Naruhito.

The upcoming trip by Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako will be the third state visit to Britain since the coronation of the king, after state guests from South Africa and South Korea.
