Repositioning cruises 2024 and 2025: Save money with these unusual itineraries

Kristine Hansen

Looking for a cruise where you can truly kick back and take advantage of onboard amenities without getting caught up in the hustle and bustle of a different port of call every day? Consider a repositioning cruise.

Repositioning cruises are the name for one-way sailings that bring the ship to a new home port or a different part of the world to kick-start a new cruise season. Because these sailings often cross oceans, you'll likely experience ports in more than one cruise region — and have ample sea days to take advantage of the spa, dining and entertainment options on board.

All the major cruise lines offer the occasional repositioning cruises, typically on ships that usually sail in destinations with shorter seasons, such as Alaska or the Mediterranean . Here, we answer all your questions about repositioning cruises.

What is a repositioning cruise?

Cruise ships chase warm and sunny climates, so they often move, or "reposition," from one part of the world to another when chilly weather sets in. Cruise lines don't want to sail a ghost ship, one carrying only crew and no passengers, across the ocean because it's wasting an opportunity to earn money. They have figured out that by discounting rates, they can fill the cabins on these oddball itineraries.

Repositioning cruises are never round-trip sailings. Your origin and destination cities — or, in cruise-speak , embarkation and disembarkation ports — will not be the same. You might sail out of Florida and arrive in Barcelona or Southampton, England, allowing you to explore two continents on one vacation. Or, you might simply sail from Boston to Florida or from San Diego to Vancouver, British Columbia.

repositioning cruises marella

Repositioning cruises are known for having a greater-than-average number of days spent at sea, but it's not as if you never get off the ship. On a transatlantic sailing , port stops could be in Spain's Canary Islands or Portugal's Azores islands. A repositioning cruise from Southern California to Vancouver before the Alaska cruise season might sail up the Pacific Coast and visit cities like San Francisco and Astoria, Oregon.

Another aspect that makes a repositioning cruise different from a typical sailing is that many of these itineraries are longer than a week. (This is by design. It takes longer to sail from Florida to Europe than it does to sail to and from the Caribbean .) Still, there is a lot of flexibility, just as with booking any cruise. The shortest you'll find is four or five days (for example, Southern California to Vancouver) and the longest is around 28 nights (yes, almost an entire month, usually between continents).

Are repositioning cruises one-way?

Yes, repositioning cruises are one-way voyages that start in one region and end in another. Because they happen when a cruise ship switches destinations based on seasonality, these sailings often involve travel to a different part of the world, which can result in many consecutive days at sea.

Where and what time of year do cruise ships reposition?

The good news is you can book a repositioning cruise nearly six months out of the year, spanning mid-spring and mid-fall months, which are the cruise lines' shoulder seasons.

Because repositioning cruises are not all tied to the same destination, this only widens your options in terms of geography. To envision where these will sail and when, you need to know a destination's cruise season.

Take Europe as an example. The majority of Mediterranean and Baltic sailings take place in the spring through the early fall. Europe-based ships flee the region during the winter, spending November through March in the warm Caribbean. Therefore, a ship will need to travel from the Caribbean to Europe in spring and return to the Caribbean by fall. Look for transatlantic repositioning cruises during those changeover months.

Some ships stay in the Caribbean year-round and only reposition when the cruise line chooses to move them to a different home port. However, ships sailing short seasons in Alaska, South America, Canada/New England and Europe will always be repositioned at least twice a year.

Due to increased cruise itineraries in the Middle East and Asia over the last decade, you might also find a repositioning cruise departing or returning to either of those regions. For example, MSC Cruises offers cruises from Dubai in the United Arab Emirates to Genoa, Italy, in April prior to sailing European itineraries in the spring and summer. Just be prepared to be away from home for a long time. The aforementioned sailing lasts about three weeks — a long trek through the Suez Canal, connecting the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, by way of Egypt.

Note: Many cruise lines have canceled or altered their 2024 Middle East itineraries due to unrest in the region.

What happens on a repositioning cruise?

On many repositioning cruises, you will not get off the ship as often as you might on a typical sailing because there are no ports in the middle of the ocean you're crossing. These itineraries often feature a string of sea days, so be prepared to spend more time and money on board.

Some people love port-intensive cruises so they can quickly check off a list of countries and only unpack once. But if you prefer leisurely, lazy days, then a transoceanic repositioning cruise might be your ticket to utopia. This huge stretch of time is a great opportunity to crack open books you've been meaning to read, launch into a knitting project or finally have time for daily workouts.

Programming — such as comedy nights, fitness classes, boutique shopping, art auctions, wine tastings and evening shows — are as much a part of a repositioning cruise as any other sailing, only you might be able to take in a whole lot more than you normally would. Some cruise lines organize themed sailings or invite guest lecturers on board for extra sea day activities.

You also might want to consider springing for a cruise line's all-inclusive beverage package on a repositioning cruise. You'll get better value than usual from the price because you'll be ordering most of your drinks on board due to fewer port stops.

Another worthwhile splurge is a balcony cabin . You'll have easy access to fresh air without the top-deck crowds and can enjoy the romance of gazing out at the seemingly endless ocean. Just be sure to pack a sweater or sweatshirt because shoulder seasons in these climates are not necessarily sunbathing weather.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a repositioning cruise?

When you book a repositioning cruise, you'll likely be on board for at least two weeks, allowing enough time for the ship to sail between where it's currently based and its new home port. Sometimes the voyage can be even longer, and it's likely you won't have more than five or six port stops during that time.

That means lots of days on board, many of them consecutive. It's an advantage for anyone who enjoys relaxing at sea and doesn't mind exploring the ship for days at a time without touching land; it's a disadvantage for anyone who sees cruises as merely transportation to explore new places.

An advantage of repositionings is the price, which is often cheaper than what you'd pay for a round-trip sailing of the same length or which has more port days built into the schedule. However, the cost of the potentially expensive one-way or open-jaw flights needed before and after a repositioning cruise could eat up most of the money you'd save by booking that type of voyage.

Do you need a passport for a repositioning cruise?

Yes. The only time you don't need a passport to cruise is if you're booked on a closed-loop sailing — a voyage that departs from and returns to the same port within the U.S. Since repositioning cruises don't leave from and return to the same port, the exception won't apply, and you'll need a passport in order to board the ship.

Are repositioning cruises cheaper than other cruises?

It depends on the sailings to which you're comparing them, but repositioning cruises are often relatively affordable. Even though repositioning sailings can often be two to three weeks in length, you might find that they're less expensive than a regular weeklong voyage that begins and ends in the same port of call. That's because repositioning cruises offer mostly sea days, during which you'll be enjoying the ship instead of lounging on the beach or exploring museums.

How to score repositioning cruise deals

repositioning cruises marella

More often than not, a repositioning cruise is a good deal because it costs much less per night than a typical sailing. This is because the one-way, sea day-heavy itineraries are less desirable to the majority of cruisers, and they take place during slower travel seasons.

Travelers who live near the embarkation or debarkation ports can save even more by only having to buy a one-way plane ticket rather than a full round trip.

Repositioning cruises can be tricky to find on booking sites. They often are referred to as repositioning cruises or transatlantic or transpacific cruises. When ships reposition between ports in the U.S. and Canada, the one-off one-way itineraries might not be labeled anything special beyond Caribbean or Pacific Coast cruises.

Not all of the cruise line or online travel agency booking pages have an option to check a box and search for repositioning cruises. If you can't find what you're looking for, do an online search for the term and the cruise line you wish to sail. Even better, call a travel agent or the cruise line's booking staff directly, and they can help you find the repositioning cruise that's best for you.

Windstar Cruises ' Wind Spirit, a masted sailing ship, is repositioning from Barbados to Lisbon, Portugal, on Feb. 22, 2025. However, you'll only want to book this voyage if you're interested in sailing vessels or you're not easily bored. The ship is small, and there are no port calls on the schedule.

Prices start from $2,399 per person for a room with a window.

23-night Panama Canal on Coral Princess

For a lengthy voyage that will allow you to sail from Fort Lauderdale through the Panama Canal to Mexico and then up the California coast before arriving in Canada, check out Princess Cruises ' Coral Princess. Beginning April 10, 2025, the ship is featuring a cruise that's longer than three weeks as it repositions to Vancouver for a season of Alaska sailings .

Fares begin at $1,593 per person for an inside cabin. If you're short on time, you can opt instead for a shorter voyage of 16 nights that also begins on April 10 and ends in Los Angeles before the ship moves on to Canada. Fares for the shorter cruise start from $1,048 per person for inside accommodations.

17-night French Polynesia and Hawaii on Celebrity Edge

Celebrity Cruises ' Celebrity Edge will relocate from its base in Sydney on April 14, 2025. Its ultimate destination is Vancouver, where it will be stationed for a series of Alaska voyages. On its way, it will take passengers on a 17-night trip to experience the beauty of French Polynesia before concluding the sailing in Honolulu. Port calls include Paihia and Auckland in New Zealand and Raiatea, Papeete and Moorea in French Polynesia.

Rates start at $1,574 per person for an inside cabin.

14-night transatlantic on Odyssey of the Seas

On April 27, 2025, Royal Caribbean 's Odyssey of the Seas is repositioning from Bayonne's Cape Liberty port in New Jersey to Rome. There are only five port stops — Ponta Delgada, Portugal; Malaga, Cartagena and Valencia, Spain; and La Spezia, the port for Cinque Terre in Italy — mixed in among the sea days. However, this Quantum Class vessel has plenty to keep cruisers busy on board. Amenities include surfing and skydiving simulators, bumper cars and a robotic arm that holds a glass-enclosed observation sphere for excellent ocean views.

Fares begin at $829 per person for an inside cabin.

Everything you need to know about repositioning cruises

Richard Mellor

Richard Mellor

The savviest cruise travellers swear by repositioning cruises . So do those seafarers who just love seeing unusual destinations, often multiple continents to boot, with long and lazy days at sea and time aplenty to enjoy the onboard amenities.

Marella Discovery at sea

Marella Cruises * offers plenty of repositioning itineraries across its luxury fleet each year: you might start in Naples and finish in Oman, traverse the Atlantic or see much of Med while sailing between Dubrovnik and Malaga.

What is a repositioning cruise?

Repositioning, or sometimes repositional, cruises happen when a ship changes homeports. They typically occur at the end of a holiday season, when vessels move to a different continent as they chase the sun.

A classic example involves transatlantic voyages across the Atlantic, swapping summer in Europe for balmy Caribbean winters, or the reverse trip months later.

With Marella Cruises, other instances include sailings from Alaska to Central America or Asia to the Middle East, and vice versa, plus some much shorter journeys from one Mediterranean homeport to another.

Marella's entire fleet undertakes repositioning cruises, allowing you to choose between modern, facility-packed larger ships such as Marella Explorer and Marella Discovery or the brand new Marella Voyager.

Why book a Marella repositioning cruise?

There are three main reasons, led by the obvious: the chance to save money. Repositional cruises are usually offered at much lower per-day rates than high or mid-season fares, allowing the chance to take a luxury voyage at an amazingly low price.

Some of Marella's repositioning cruises are also discounted often by more than £1,000 to make them the ultimate bargain.

The Dining Club on Marella Explorer 2

That affordability is partly due to repositional cruises often spending more days at sea than a typical cruise amid ocean crossings. For many cruisers, however, this is actually a lure: namely, for those who enjoy the feeling of voyaging across open water, or who simply want ample time to enjoy their ship.

A transatlantic repositioning cruise allows plenty of opportunities to delve into Marella Explorer's Champneys Spa and extensive dining options, for example.

Finally, there's the potential to visit some exotic places or to enjoy curious themes. Rather than simply crossing non-stop, Marella's repositioning cruises over the Atlantic punctuate their long journey at the likes of Bermuda, Madeira or the Azores; some also come with a special entertainment theme such as the Eighties or Nineties.

Three sample repositional cruises

Easter esacpe.

For a short cruise with a bit of early spring sunshine, consider Easter Escape , a four-night voyage hopping from one famous Spanish port to the next aboard Marella Explorer 2.

You'll sail from the Balearic port of Palma in Majorca to Alicante, Valencia and Barcelona on the mainland before arriving back in Palma. Ideal for munching through chocolate Easter eggs while bobbing about in the Med.

La Sagesse Beach on the island of Grenada

Stateside Discovery

Go further afield next spring with Stateside Discovery , an 11-night winter-sun cruise taking in ports on the east coast of the US and giving a flavour of the Caribbean aboard Marella Discovery.

Setting off from Port Canaveral in Florida, you'll cruise to ever-cool Miami and historic New Orleans before sailing into the turquoise waters of the Caribbean with stops in the Dominican Republic and Barbados.

Arabian Sunrise 1

If you're after something a little more adventurous, look no further than the adults-only Arabian Sunrise 1 aboard Marella Discovery 2 next spring.

This 14-night odyssey will take to the seas in April 2024 from the Sri Lankan port capital, Colombo, calling at Mangalore, Mormugao and Mumbai in India before heading across the Indian Ocean to Oman and up the Red Sea to the Jordanian port of Aqaba. Unforgettable experiences, guaranteed.

Top tips for booking a repositioning cruise

  • Pick your cabin carefully - on an ocean-crossing cruise, you're likely to spend much more time in it
  • For the same reason, check the ship carefully - for instance, would you be happier with the large size, endless dining options and many amenities of Marella Explorer or much smaller Marella Dream's luxury spa and more intimate feel?
  • Remember to factor in one-way flight costs - you'll have to pay for flight(s) at one or both ends of the cruise
  • Expect a quieter ship & older crowd - this will appeal to some, but deter those keen for a busy, buzzy atmosphere
  • That said, don't think of a repositioning cruise as a stripped-down version of a standard voyage - that's a common misconception; you'll enjoy exactly the same level of complimentary dining options, entertainment, activities and high-quality service will be offered as usual with Marella Cruises.

£300 off your next repositional cruise with Marella Cruises

Author: Daniel Edward

Published on: 02 March 2024

Updated on: 02 April 2024

Start your cruise in one place and journey to somewhere completely different. A complete multi-destination voyage where you only need to unpack once

Marella Cruises offers a range of repositional cruises that set off from one port and end somewhere different, giving you access to even more destinations throughout your trip all with the convenience of only having to unpack once. To sweeten the deal even further, Marella Cruises is currently running a special discount code that grants you up to £300* off your booking. All you need to do is add the code SAIL300 to your cart when you book online.

How do repositional cruises work?

Most cruises are round-trip itineraries that start and finish in the same place. So what’s the difference with these cruises? Well, a repositional cruise often means you’re able to cover a greater distance and therefore experience an even more exciting range of destinations during the cruise. And what about flights to and from the ship? That’s where a Marella Cruises repositional cruise comes into its own – you don’t need to worry about that at all. Marella Cruises’ all-inclusive packages have already sorted flights and airport transfers, so the travel at either end of the cruise is just as convenient as ever. Often repositional cruises feature a few more days at sea than a regular itinerary – for example transatlantic crossings –so there’s plenty of onboard activities and entertainment to keep your sailing days as action-packed or restful and relaxing as you want.

Where are we sailing?

Asia is a mesmerising continent to explore, and the ‘ Eastern Sights and Delights ’ repositional cruise showcases a magnificent spread of the region.

Starting in Singapore (with an overnight stay), this rather unique voyage boomerangs out towards Thailand and Malaysia before returning to Singapore for extra time in this much-loved city-state, and then spending further time in Malaysia and Thailand on the way to Sri Lanka.

If you’ve ever felt you’ve not had enough time to experience your favourite ports, this is the itinerary for you. For fans of the Atlantic – perhaps the most iconic of all ocean crossings – Marella Voyager’s ‘ Atlantic Voyager ’ itinerary, departing Barbados on April 14, 2024, showcases some of the Eastern Caribbean’s most remarkable islands, including St Kitts and Antigua.

Midway across the Atlantic, you’ll enjoy two days in the Azores and a further day in Madeira, before completing the crossing in Spain, disembarking in Majorca.

But perhaps a transatlantic crossing doesn’t venture far enough and you’d love for the journey to continue east across the Mediterranean too.

Well, Marella Discovery has the answer to your wishes in the form of an ‘ Aegean Horizons ’ cruise, setting sail from Bridgetown, Barbados, on April 18, 2024. This eye-catching 18-night cruise visits Tenerife as it ventures across the Atlantic, and then – as you enter the Mediterranean – you’ll check into Gibraltar and Alicante on the western side of the Mediterranean. The cruise continues across to Malta and Crete, concluding in Turkey. And if it’s the Mediterranean that really speaks to you, then Marella Explorer’s two-week ‘ Olives and Old Towns ’ cruise from Tenerife across to Corfu could be just the ticket. This all-inclusive cruise features nine ports and spans the length of the Mediterranean Sea with highlights including the Canary Islands to start the cruise followed by Spain’s Costa del Sol and Majorca, Italy’s Sardinia, and Malta and Corfu to round out the trip. We’d take that even without the £300* discount.

What to Pack for a Marella Cruise - Frequently Asked Questions

Question – Is there a limit on how many suitcases I can take on my Marella cruise?

Answer – With the majority of  Marella cruises, once you have checked in at the airport your luggage will be taken straight to your cruise cabin. However, at a few ports, you have to reclaim your luggage at the airport and take it to the transfer coach who will then take it to your cabin on arrival at the port. You will be given this information when you check in at the airport.

Question – How will the porters know what cabin we are staying in?

Answer – You can either print off your luggage labels at home, or Marella will provide them when you check in for your outbound flight. You just attach them to your suitcase.

Question – You stated that taking an iron is prohibited, how do I iron my clothes?

Answer – Unfortunately there is no iron in your cabin but Marella does provide a laundry service, you can find out what that will cost here . Another great way to prevent creasing is to roll your clothes, rather than folding them. It doesn’t always work, but one to give a go!

Question – Are the cabins all the same?

Answer – There are lots of cabin choices, from inside cabins with no windows, all the way up to plush suites, some even come with their own piano! Prices are based on the level of comfort, size and position on the ship. We have a number of  Marella cabin tours available on our playlist here .

Question – Are the cabins basic?

Answer – Regardless of the category of cabin you book they all come with an ensuite bathroom, toiletries, towels, coffee and tea-making facilities, a TV, air conditioning, a telephone, a safe, a hairdryer and a comfortable bed.

Question – What is a muster drill?

Answer – The muster drill is a health and safety presentation that you watch on the TV in the comfort of your cabin.  It explains the safety measures that as a passenger you have to adhere to and what you need to do in the case of an emergency.  It will also show you how to put on a life jacket and how you will be alerted to an emergency by the use of the ships-horn. On the inside of your cabin door is a map outlining where you will need to go, (your muster station) in the case of an emergency. To complete the muster procedure, you go to your designated muster station, where your key card will be scanned to show that you have completed the muster procedure.

Question – What is a Cruise key card?

Answer – A  cruise key card looks like a credit card, it has your name on it and has multiple uses including opening your cabin door, making on-ship purchases, and is scanned whenever you leave the ship so the cruise line knows who is on or off the ship at any given time.

Question – Can I do my own laundry?

Answer – As we said earlier there is no self-service laundry but if you want to rinse out some items to freshen them up there is a retractable washing line in the shower cubicle. Make sure you pack some clothes pegs!

Question – Can I keep up with what’s going on in the world while away cruising?

Answer – All cabin TV’s have live news channels as well as sports news channels. They also have films and series box sets on demand, which are free to watch.

Last up is the casino which again does come with the chance of hitting the jackpot.

Question – What if I just want some quiet time?

Answer – There are numerous areas around all 5 ships where you can sit, read a book, do some arts and crafts, or just do nothing at all. It’s your cruise you can do pretty much whatever you want.

Port Days on a Marella Cruise - Frequently Asked Questions

Question – Do I have to get off the ship on a port day?

Answer – What you do on a port day is entirely up to you. Sometimes it’s nice to stay on the ship as it will be far quieter, which provides you with the opportunity to explore areas of the ship that you might not have seen.

Question – If I do get off the ship in port can I do my own thing or do I have to book an excursion?

Answer – Again it’s your cruise and you are free to choose, however, if you are going to explore areas that are a distance from the ship make sure you are back in plenty of time for sail away.

Question – What if I am late back to ship?

Answer – The beauty of booking an  excursion with the cruise line is that if you are delayed the ship will wait for you. However, if you are travelling independently and you return after the advertised sail away time the Captain is well within their rights to leave you behind, as a delayed departure could cost the cruise line thousands.

Repositioning & transatlantic cruises: How to save over £600

Repositioning cruises are the perfect way to sightsee both sides of the Atlantic and save hundreds of pounds while doing so – but what is a repositioning cruise?

In association with:

Marella Cruises

Repositioning cruises might not sound sexy – and if you’re new to cruise you’ll likely have no idea what the term even means – but actually this type of cruise can make for the perfect bargain, best-of-both-worlds holiday that you may well start booking year-on-year when you realise the myriad benefits!

What’s a repositioning cruise?

Repositioning cruises are one-off, one-way sailings when cruise ships change seasonal homeports or cross oceans.

Also known as repo cruises, these itineraries involve a number of days at sea which are the perfect opportunity to make the most of all the ship has to offer (and really tuck into that all-inclusive offering!) as well as seeing an array of both popular and lesser-visited ports along the way.

Marella Cruises offers a selection of repositioning and transatlantic cruises which see the TUI ships making their way from the Mediterranean, where they’ve spent the summer, over to the Caribbean where they’ll pass the winter in the Caribbean (it’s a nice life for them, hey!).

There are three fabulous Marella positioning cruises 2022: Transatlantic Discoveries, Atlantic Explorer and Voyage to the Tropics.

Not only are they packed full of fantastic ports of call but globetrotters can save hundreds and hundreds of pounds on these all-inclusive holidays!

And remember, if your holiday of choice has sold out then you can always check out these five best all-inclusive 2023 Caribbean and Mediterranean Marella cruises .

Are repositioning cruises cheaper?

A repositioning cruise is generally cheaper due to the high number of days at sea so is the perfect way to visit the Mediterranean and Caribbean while saving money.

For instance, Marella repositioning cruises 2022 have deals with savings of nearly £700. What’s more, all three holidays include flights as well as all food and drink and all tips. How jammy is that!

Adults-only itinerary Transatlantic Discoveries has been slashed by a whopping £699 with prices now starting from just £1,301pp. That includes 17 nights with calls to Majorca, Spain, Tenerife and multiple Caribbean islands, working out at £76.50pp a night! Absolute bloody bargain. *Books right now*.

Adults-only cruise Voyage to the Tropics comes with massive savings of £632. The 18-night cruise starts from just £1,518pp and packs a hell of a lot in, calling at Malaga, the Canary Islands, Cape Verde and many Caribbean gems including Antigua, St Lucia and Barbados. According to our maths, that’s £84.30 a night! Sign us up!

There’s also adults-only Marella repositioning cruise Atlantic Explorer which has been cut by £428. Sail from just £1,812pp in a balcony cabin on a 14-night voyage taking in Malaga and the Canary Islands as well as Antigua, Guadeloupe, St Lucia and Barbados. That comes to just £129.43 a night! And yup you can hit the buffet as many times as you like.

Are repositioning cruises fun?

Transatlantic cruises are brilliant for the diversity of ports of call on both sides of the pond but also for the opportunity they provide to full maximise everything the ship has to offer – no need to feel guilty for not heading off ashore!

These TUI ships are packed full of bars, restaurants, lounges, theatres… you name it, so no chance of getting bored on Marella repositioning cruises 2022!

Marella Discovery 2 sails the Transatlantic Discoveries itinerary and boasts an outdoor cinema, a rock climbing wall, a mini golf course, two pools – one indoor and one outdoor – seven restaurants, a spa and Broadway-style performances are on every night in the 800-plus capacity show lounge.

There are seven restaurants in total (one for every day of the week!) with included eateries covering everything from Italian cuisine to festival food stalls while speciality restaurants range from sushi and steak to south and east Asian fare.

Marella Explorer 2, the newest ship in the TUI fleet, sails the Atlantic Explorer route. A full-time adults-only ship, the vessel is ideal for this Marella repositioning cruise 2022 with such exciting facilities as the Champneys Spa, a chic bar-club-casino space and The 19th Hole – a golf-themed bar with a golf simulator.

There are nine bars and nine restaurants in total, some of which are the same as onboard Marella Discovery 2, but there’s also fine dining restaurant The Dining Club, Beach Cove – a relaxed restaurant with barbecue-inspired menus and quirky swinging seats – and Nonna’s where you can make your own pizza and pasta dishes from scratch. As for entertainment, there’s a nightclub, an open-air cinema and Broadway Show Lounge offering 12 shows in total.

Last but not least, Marella Discovery, which cruises Voyage to the Tropics, is one of the TUI cruise line’s biggest ships.

Perks of the ship include seven bars, seven restaurants, an outdoor cinema, a five-storey atrium, a rock climbing wall, a minigolf course, a casino, an open-air cinema and two pools – one indoor and one outdoor.

Has anyone booked  the Marella Discovery  repositioning cruise 19 nights in October 2021.  We would love to book it but we cant find out from tui  the cost of all the tests needed for 11 different ports.  Its not clear if you would need tests in all as things change almost daily.    I do see that you are able to go ashore on your own now.     like a lot of people  if the cost is excessive  or its a lot of hassle,  we will leave it  until next year.

many thanks

With more Caribbean islands being added to the red list and Marella now allowing fee free changes on the whole of the Caribbean season these cruises have to be in doubt.  If they do go ahead, personally I think the level of complications regarding testing and entry requirements would make it more of an obstacle race than a holiday. We are booked on Explorer 2 for January and have already given up any thoughts of going, just waiting to see if Marella cancel or if we have to move to something in 2023.

thanks Riocca for the info, it looks very unlikely that we will book this. Very sad really we are  doubtful  that the cruise industry  can survive if this thing drags on and on.

Sad really, I think it’s going to take a different mind set from both cruise companies and passengers to come through this. As tempting as the Caribbean is I think the Canaries might be the best we can do for winter sunshine for a couple of years. Way things are going it might be 2024 or 2025 before we venture further than European itineraries.

all you say may very well be true, but i hope you are way off the mark.  I doubt the cruise  industry could survive  in that kind of  future.

We are really missing our cruises, four a year minimum, but think at the moment far too many hoops for us, as oldies, to jump through hope it will come back but it may be a bit late for us. We may be booking something for 2023 with our vouchers but flying is a definite no no. Good luck to everyone who are booked.

Hear hear. Absolutely  agree. I so miss my cruises. As a solo cruiser I enjoyed meeting others, and of course, the wonderful crew. Hopefully, in the next year or so, I will feel comfortable enough to make a booking.

Hopefully, Marella will do more cruises from the UK next year, as flying/airports are an added risk.

We have avoided most 'normal' things in the last 18 months apart from essential food shopping, but as things are likely to deteriorate in the coming winter months, and you can't put life on hold indefinitely, we took a risk, and booked the 7 day UK cruise from Southampton up the west coast, at the last minute as it was my wife's 70th birthday, and our Golden wedding anniversary in October. We have just returned, and I have to say, we felt very safe with all the precautions taken by Marella. Passengers were very compliant with the rules imposed.

We have just done two lateral flow tests since returning, thankfully both clear, and will be repeating the tests in a few days time to double check.

Marella: Cruise Business ‘Looking Good’

  • July 22, 2024

Marella Discovery

It’s going to be the biggest year ever for Marella Cruises, with over 350,000 guests expected across the company’s fleet of five ships, said Chris Hackney, managing director.

TUI Group, which owns Marella, reported the cruise line’s second quarter occupancy at 99 percent, up from 95 percent a year ago. The daily rate per guest was reported at 197 euro, up from 181 euro for the second quarter in 2023.

Three new homeports included Singapore last winter, Marmaris this summer and La Romana for winter 2024-25.

“Customers choose a cruise around destination, and we are working hard on new deployments,” he said.

The company’s fly-cruise model means most guests are within a 90-minute drive of a UK airport, and board TUI planes that take them to the ships. It’s a seamless experience, said Hackney. It also means the company can vary its deployment thanks to having its own airlift.

“That gives us a huge amount of flexibility with our deployment. We’ve deployed ships in Corfu and Dubrovnik, which don’t have the natural airlift,” Hackney said, noting there are no plans to base ships in the UK.

Big Investments

The Marella Discovery 2 will drydock later this year, with work highlighted by a significant cabin refurbishment for balconies and suites, Hackney said.

Other technical projects include bulbous bow updates across the fleet, waste heat recovery and LED lighting, along with investment in HVAC to make the ships more efficient.

“The customer may not see or notice it but it’s important for us across the fleet,” Hackney said.

New next winter is the company’s La Romana homeporting program, giving it a new wrinkle in the Caribbean with calls into the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico with the Marella Explora 2.

Next summer the Marella Discovery 2 heads to Limassol for a new deployment, Hackney said.

“We generally operate in the Mediterranean in the summer and the Caribbean and Canaries in the winter. That is our blueprint that has worked successfully,” he explained. “It brings the strengths of our airlift and cruise-and-stay product.”

The company will have one additional ship in the Canaries for 2024-25 as earlier this year the Marella Discovery 2’s program in Asia was cancelled due to the geopolitical situation in the Middle East and the repositioning of the ship back-and-forth to the Far East.

Looking Good

“We are in a fortunate position,” Hackney added. “The bookings are looking good at the moment. We had a successful winter and the summer season is positive.

“We are conscious in the UK of where our customers are coming from. There is a cost-of-living crisis here and we offer value for money with the all-inclusive proposition we have. That is something we put in a lot of our messaging.

“The key is to make sure the customer experience is phenomenal. We discuss that on a daily basis and look at how to evolve the product proposition. Our customer satisfaction scores are the best they have ever been and we know that directly relates to better retention. If we can get customers coming back, that is the number one goal that will drive all other measures.”

Newcastle upon Tyne cruise port

Region Ireland - UK - British Isles

Local Time 2024-07-25 16:44

Port Newcastle upon Tyne cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Newcastle upon Tyne, England. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Newcastle upon Tyne is a large port city in Tyne and Wear (metro county in North East England), located approx 165 km (103 mi) south of Edinburgh (Scotland) and approx 446 km (277 mi) north of London . Port of Tyne is on River Tyne and approx 14 km (9 mi) from North Sea. By urban population (around 300,000), Newcastle is North East England's largest city. By metro population (around 1,65 million) Tyneside (conurbation/metro region) is ranked UK's 8th largest - following London, Manchester, West Midlands, West Yorkshire, Glasgow, Liverpool, and South Hampshire.

Port Tyne (locode GBTYN) is the gateway to England's northernmost region Northumbria. The city attracts tourists with its modern infrastructure, architecture, entertainment options, classy atmosphere. The city is served by Newcastle Airport, located approx 10 km (6 mi) from downtown (near Ponteland). The main airport-city connection is the Tyne and Wear Metro (railway system) with travel time ~20 min. By annual passenger traffic (around 10 million) the airport is ranked UK's 10th largest and connects Newcastle to over 90 global destinations.

Port of Tyne

Port Newcastle as facilities comprises all the commercial docks on River Tyne (total area ~250 hectares / 2,5 km2 / 1 mi2). Its Gross Value Added for 2018 was GBP 690 million. Port's shipping operations support around 14,000 North East England jobs.

Port's cruising season is May through September. Most popular itineraries are Norwegian Fjords and Russia-Scandinavia.

Port's growth started in the 13th century. Back then, Newcastle was ranked England's 6th largest export port, with the country's principal exports at that time being wool, timber, coal, dairy products, fish, salt, hides. Much of the shipping trade was with countries in the Baltic Sea (mainly with Germany). From the 16th-century onward, the port's growth was mainly based on coal export.

In the late-19th century, the Port's river channel was deepened to 10 m (32 ft). Then were also built the two main piers (North and South), Tyne and Albert Edward Docks, and Northumberland county was formed. In 1928 was opened Tyne Commission Quay (now Northumbrian Quay) at North Shields, where was handled the cargo shipping trade with Bergen Norway .

Port of Tyne Authority manages the port since 1968. Port's current-day trade is based mainly on UK-made cars export. The port has 2x car terminals, 1x cruise terminal (Northumbrian Quay) and 1x ferry terminal (North Shields). Regularly scheduled cruiseferries connect Newcastle with Amsterdam (Holland). Currently, the company  DFDS Seaways offers 7 weekly crossings to Amsterdam , with travel time 16 hours. As alternatives to this route are offered crossings between  Harwich and Hook of Holland, as well as Hull - Rotterdam and Hull- Zeebrugge (Belgium) ,

Port of Tyne's cruising business started on August 30, 1999, with the arrival of the Cunard 's liner Royal Viking Sun (now Amera) . For 20 years (1999-2019), the cruise port has been invested ~GBP 8 million in passenger facilities, including GBP 5 million in Northumbrian Quay's redevelopment/extension into a dedicated cruise ship dock/berth. In the period 1999-2019, the cruise port handled a total of 450 ship calls and 700,000+ tourists from 60 different companies . For season 2019, Port Tyne's International Passenger Terminal had scheduled 59 cruise ship calls (berth bookings), including 10 turnarounds/roundtrips by the homeported here  MS Marella Explorer  ( Marella Cruises) .

All cruise vessels dock at the North Shields ferry terminal's pier (adjacent to Royal Quays Marina). Port's cruising business adds approx GBP 55-60 million and creates over 1700 related jobs for UK's North East economy. The cruise port's 2017 schedule had the all-time highest number of ship calls - 50. For comparison, in 2016 this number was 44.

Season 2017's scheduled cruise ship calls were 52, including 19 port-transit itineraries and 33 turnarounds (roundtrips) to Baltic and Mediterranean destinations, like Iberia, German waterways, Russia ( St Petersburg ) and various UK-based itineraries (around Britain and Ireland). Among the port's largest customers in 2017 were the companies Fred Olsen , CMV UK ,  AIDA ,  DCL-Disney . Newcomers docking in the region were NCL Norwegian and TUI . In 2017, the port handled around 120,000 cruise passengers and 600,000 ferry passengers ( DFDS SEAWAYS ).  Containership trade volumes increased by 8% (mainly manufacturing parts, recycled materials, raw tea export to Canada). The port now handles over 40% of UK’s total raw tea import.

In June 2018 was announced port business growth, following the completion of investment projects at South Shields (started in 2017) of over GBP 100 million. South Shields' new facilities can handle now larger volumes of wood pellets. Also updated were the port's infrastructure and equipment. By automotive trade (number of cars exported from here) Port’ of Tyne is ranked UK’s 2nd largest (after Southampton).

In early-March 2019, the Port received GBP 60 million (~EUR 70 million) refinancing from Lloyds Bank (British commercial bank) to support port's infrastructure development program. The 5-year deal comprised GBP 30 million revolving credit plus GBP 30 million term loan. By this program was also upgraded the port's container terminal (1991-opened, sized 20 acres / 81,000 m2). The GBP 2 million investment resulted in the terminal's extension (by 40%) and reconfiguration, repositioning the heavy-duty weighbridge. Terminal's new annual TEU capacity is ~100,000. here are handled containerized cargoes like tea (~1/3rd of UK’s import), clothing, consumer goods, furniture, machinery, recovered (by-products and waste) materials.

On May 13, 2020, was announced the plan for the construction of an Operations and Maintenance Base at Port of Tyne. The facility (office space and a warehouse) will serve the Dogger Bank Wind Farm in the North Sea. The offshore wind farm complex (currently the world’s biggest) is located approx 120-290 km (80-180 mi) off England's (Yorkshire) coast.

  • Dogger Bank Wind Farm is currently under construction, being developed by the Forewind consortium that includes the companies SSE plc (Scottish and Southern Energy / Scotland), RWE AG (Germany), Equinor ASA (Norway / fka StatoilHydro) and Statkraft AS (Norway).
  • Dogger Bank Wind Farm will generate ~5% of the UK’s electricity. The offshore complex is a 50:50 joint venture of Equinor and SSE Renewables (subsidiary of SSE plc). Offshore construction works started in January 2020.
  • Planned to become fully operational in 2023, Dogger Bank Wind Farm's expected lifespan is ~25 years. The energy project has an estimated capital cost of ~GBP 9 billion (~USD 11 B / ~EUR 10,2 B) with investments in the period 2020-2026.

Newcastle upon Tyne cruise terminal

Newcastle upon Tyne cruise port terminal is located in North Shields, adjacent to Royal Quays Marina. The facility has 2 berths and can handle liners with LOA length up to 300 m (985 ft). Terminal's max passenger capacity is 2000.

Port Tyne's annual cruise shipping traffic is ~800,000 passengers. The terminal building has 700 seats, 6 check-ins, luggage handling facilities, Wi-Fi, cafe, shop, tourist information, ATMs (cash machines), short-term and long-term parking. Taxi and bus shuttle services to downtown and Metro are also available.

A peace settlement in the Ukraine war cannot be achieved without Russia and China at the table, Czech President Petr Pavel has said.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been eyeing a second Ukrainian peace summit in November after hosting representatives from 92 countries at the first summit in Switzerland last month aimed at outlining a roadmap for future peace efforts.

Russia was not invited, and said discussing any plans for peace in its absence was a waste of time. China was also absent.

The Ukrainian president said earlier this month that Russia should attend the second meeting if it goes ahead.

Mr Pavel said another summit was "desirable" - but he told Czech news agency CTK that the negotiations would not make sense without Moscow's participation.

"Without Russia and China at the table, there really won't be any peace negotiations," he said.

He also said Beijing should use its status as an "important global player" to urge Russia to move towards peace in the conflict.

The US is looking at establishing logistics hubs in Black Sea countries to speed up the supply of weapons to Kyiv, an aide to Vladimir Putin has said.

Nikolai Patrushev claimed Washington would also seek to deploy modern long-range weapons at the hubs.

Mr Patrushev, the former chair of Russia's security council, also said Moscow had foiled plans by NATO to set up a naval base in the Sea of Azov - a body of water connected to the Black Sea.

He did not specify what time period he was referring to.

There is no indication of a deliberate attack on NATO territory, an alliance spokesperson has said, after alleged Russian drone fragments were found in Romania (see previous post).

However, NATO said it pointed to "irresponsible and potentially dangerous" incidents of Russian drones entering Romanian airspace.

The alliance has ramped up its monitoring and surveillance measures, including air patrols, in recent days, the spokesperson said.

"While NATO has no information indicating any intentional attack by Russia against allied territory, these acts are irresponsible and potentially dangerous", they said in a statement.

A picture has emerged which purports to show fragments of a Russian "Geran" or Shahed drone lying on the ground in a rural Romanian village.

Romania's defence ministry said earlier that parts of what was believed to be a Russian drone were recovered near the Danube River and the country's border with Ukraine.

The discovery followed more attacks by Russia on Ukraine over the past two nights, the ministry said, which prompted Romania to deploy warplanes to monitor its airspace.

The picture below, from Romanian news site G4Media, has not been independently verified.

Ukrainian forces have struck and damaged Russia's last operational rail ferry in the Black Sea, the UK ministry of defence has said.

According to the MoD's latest intelligence update, the Slavyanin ferry was one of three rail ships able to transit the Kerch Strait between Russia and the occupied Crimean peninsula.

Following other Ukrainian strikes on 29 May, Slavyanin "had been put back into service as the only rail RO-RO [roll-on roll-off] ferry", the MoD said.

It added that the ferry was "highly likely" transporting Russian gas to customers in the Black Sea.

"Rendering RO-RO ferries non-operational, even temporarily, imposes increased costs as well as reducing Russia's flexibility to transport fuel, munitions and equipment across the Kerch Strait," the ministry said.

It added that the attacks had likely forced Moscow to "change its security procedures".

A former mayor of the Ukrainian city of Uman has been killed on the front line, according to reports.

Ihor Taburets, the governor of Ukraine's central Cherkasy region, where Uman city is located, reported the news of Oleksandr Tsebrii's death on Telegram and described it as a "heavy loss".

He said Mr Tsebrii died "defending Ukraine".

The former mayor reportedly joined the Ukrainian military shortly after the Russian invasion in February 2022.

The Netherlands and Denmark are set to deliver 14 refurbished Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, the Dutch defence ministry has said.

Both countries in April last year said they would buy the tanks from a third party and get them ready for battle in Ukraine.

The tanks have been completely brought to battlefield standard by German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall after months of testing.

They will be delivered before the end of summer, the ministry said.

"The Leopard 2A4 tanks can help Ukraine gain the upper hand on the battlefield," it said in a statement.

An 18-year-old man has been arrested over the murder of former Ukrainian MP Irina Farion, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said.

An unidentified man opened fire on the 60-year-old in the street in the city of Lviv last week, before fleeing the scene.

"An 18-year-old boy has been detained," the president said of the case.

"The necessary investigative actions and examinations are under way [and] I have instructed the minister of internal affairs to provide all the details to the public."

Ms Farion was famed for her work to ensure the Ukrainian language was used in Ukraine, rather than Russian.

Three more ships from Russia's Baltic Fleet will arrive in Cuba on Saturday, official media sites have said.

The visit will be the second by Russian naval vessels since June.

A brief statement by the Cuban Revolutionary Armed Forces said the visit was routine, but back-to-back naval visits by any country to Cuba have not occurred in decades.

The Cuban government previously insisted these are friendly visits, and that ships are carrying no nuclear weapons and "there is no threat to the region".

Reports suggested that the nearby US sent sea drones to shadow the Russian vessels the last time they visited in June.
