Our expert contributors nominate the destinations that are on the up right now, because of a flock of hotel openings, perhaps, murmurings of Michelin arrivals, shiny new museums or a concerted conservation effort taking root. This year, as well as turning our gaze to global destinations in the Best Places to Go in the World in 2024, we’re also looking to the spots that are making waves on each continent right now. This list is an edit of Europe's countries, regions, cities and neighbourhoods that are worthy of your time and attention next year.

The grande dame of the Mediterranean remains unrivalled thanks to its pitch-perfect brand of low-key luxury, exceptional service and focus on sustainability. But in recent months, the Balearic island has added even more jewels to its crown; among them is Son Bunyola , Richard Branson’s latest hotel, in the Tramuntana Mountains. Not far from there, in the town of Puigpunyent, the team behind Andalucia’s stellar Finca Cortesin has opened Grand Hotel Son Net in a 17th-century manor house. Also adding to the excitement for 2024 is the slick styling of Ikos Porto Petro , farm turned boutique stay The Lodge and Zel Mallorca – the first Zel hotel is a collaboration between Rafael Nadal and another homegrown big hitter, Meliá. As if that wasn’t enough, there’s also the Four Seasons , which takes over the much-loved Hotel Formentor, Mandarin Oriental Punta Negra, beachfront Aethos and Marugal, which has unveiled its second project on the island after Cap Rocat. Meanwhile, S’Arracer del Dimoni hotel will open in Santa Margalida, and Belmond La Residencia will continue its artists-in-residence programme and the third edition of art installation Mitico, in collaboration with Galleria Continua. – María Casbas

Just over the border from San Sebastián , the French resort town of Biarritz is prepped to step out of the shade of its Michelin-star-studded Spanish Basque counterpart and welcome a new generation of sophisticate. They are booking into its artfully resuscitated belle époque hotels, including Experimental’s brand new Regina Biarritz , Unbound’s Hôtel du Palais and enigmatic indie Villa Magnan (book a table at De Puta Madre and dine with local interior designers and filmmakers). The late 20th century was not kind to this beautiful town on France’s southwestern coast, its dwindling fortunes and faded grandeur standing in stark contrast to its late-19th-century and early-20th-century heyday, when Emperor Napoleon III had his summer palace here, and his Spanish wife Eugénie promoted Biarritz as a health resort. Happily, in-the-know Spanish and French urbanites have rediscovered this belle époque delight, lapping up a hip surf scene (Biarritz is one of Europe’s oldest surf destinations, thanks to a bunch of American filmmakers who visited in the 1950s) and fuelling a youthful Basque culinary scene, from the thrilling Les Halles covered market to neo-bistro Epoq and Michelin-starred favourites such as L’Impertinent . – Anna Hart

Is there anywhere more popular than the Greek islands right now? This past summer, the Cyclades – an island group that includes Mykonos , Santorini , Paros , Milos and Ios – dominated social-media feeds with beautiful blue and white backdrops, thrilling beach clubs and nightclubs, and unparalleled shopping. With more smart stays being unveiled in 2024, as well as new flights, next summer is the time to make a Cyclades trip happen. Etihad, British Airways and Saudia added new routes to various Greek islands in 2023, plus the 2022 launch of Cycladic, the first inter-island airline, means it’s easier than ever to get there. Hotel business is booming. Santo Pure in Oia on Santorini has just added 20 new suites, and next year it will be joined by sister hotel Santo Mine, a 37-suite luxury resort. Slick boutique hotel Kalesma on Mykonos will launch its spa for the 2024 season, including a hammam and cryotherapy area. Five-star, 80-acre Gundari Resort will open on Folegandros next May, while a new One&Only property will come to Kea in April. Go for: next-level cycling, need-for-speed motorsports and a slower take on travel with the advent of a new train line

No longer second-fiddle to France, cycling holidays in Italy are taking off

For the first time ever, the first three stages of the Tour de France will take place in Italy in 2024, a historic moment for the country, the sport and the prestigious race. Competitors will saddle up in Florence , head east towards Rimini on the Adriatic Coast, follow the Apennines north through Emilia-Romagna and complete stage three in Turin . With their truffles and terroirs, Italy’s northern regions are best known for their gastronomic heritage, but two-wheeled pursuits have long been part of the landscape. The 1998 Tour de France champion Marco Pantani was born here, while professional racer Davide Cassani was instrumental in developing the Via Romagna, a 462km network of cycling routes throughout the region. Now, tour operators have upped their game in time for the event: Tourissimo’s week-long cycle holiday is designed to provide guests with live-action access to the tour itself, plus the chance to conquer the hills and thrills of Emilia-Romagna. Ride International Tours and Ride Holidays have released new routes to reflect growing interest in the region, while the looping, leisurely route between Parma and Modena by Inn Travel leaves more time for sampling local delicacies along the way. Those more comfortable on four wheels will find the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix and the annual Motor Valley Fest , both in May, irresistible – this is the birthplace of Maserati, Ferrari and Lamborghini after all – while those who prefer life in the slow lane can board new railway routes between Turin and Canelli with Fondazione FS’s 1930s carriages or take Nightjet’s overnighter from Verona to Liguria (via Milan and Genoa). Go for: star chefs leading a foodie revolution

For a bewitching break in 2024, go north. Yorkshire-born sculptor Henry Moore once said: “The observation of nature is part of an artist’s life.” And Yorkshire has some of the most seductive nature: sweeping landscapes like living oil paintings; undulating dales and peaks; deep-forested moors with big skies; heady lavender fields; lofty woodlands filled with birdsong; and golden sandy sweeps skirting the peppermint-blue sea. The Brontës’ romanticism is not lost. In 2024, go stargazing in Yorkshire’s national parks at the magical Dark Skies Festival . The Yorkshire Balloon Fiesta will return to its new home at Castle Howard in 2024, with rainbow-bright, early-morning mass balloon flights and night glows. There were plenty of Michelin mentions for the county in 2023, with keen eyes on the 2024 list, so restaurants with rooms are ramping up. Just up the road from The Black Swan in Oldstead, Michelin-lauded chef Tommy Banks’ latest outpost, The Abbey Inn , opened in May and its three luxurious bedrooms, care of Tommy’s mother, were launched in July. For the ultimate culinary sleepover, stay two nights and eat at both restaurants. Newbie Mýse , helmed by chef-and-sommelier couple Joshua and Victoria Overington, is a petite restaurant with rooms set among caramel-coloured cottages in the sleepy village of Hovingham. Book in for its creative tasting menu, then retire upstairs to one of the cosy-cool rooms. In June, Middleton Lodge , a sustainable luxury retreat bordering the Yorkshire Dales National Park, launched the Forest Spa in the heart of a serenely wooded estate. Don’t pass by honeycomb-hued Helmsley, with its emerging culinary scene and the recent opening of Pignut – a restaurant with a sustainable focus and impressive casual and tasting-menu options. Bodǿ in Norway

Go for: epic stargazing, spectacular nature and a programme of cultural events that's not to be missed

Bodø’s position on the pristine shores of northern Norway affords it endless days in the glow of the midnight summer sun and shocks of fluorescent light come winter, when the aurora borealis erupt onto the night sky. This small Arctic fishing town is a European Capital of Culture for 2024, which will result in the area’s largest-ever arts programme, including about 1,000 events and an influx of people interested in creativity in all its forms. The region’s unique Sami heritage is championed here, while striking modern expansion is seen in buildings such as the world-class, harbour-fronting Stormen Concert Hall , which can hold 900 people and will form a crucial centrepoint for the celebrations.

Beyond its cultural accolades, Bodø is also the gateway to the ethereal Lofoten Islands . The dramatic landscape of fjords and jagged peaks makes it a perfect playground for adventurers and photographers alike, offering unforgettable, dramatic views. Adding to Bodø’s appeal is its burgeoning food and drinks scene (try Lystpå for dinner and Brødrene Berbusmel Bakery for breakfast) as well as exciting new places to stay. The Wood Hotel will open in 2024, offering the town’s most luxurious lodgings yet, with pared-back Scandi design and floor-to-ceiling windows. Go for: new hiking and biking trails across the beautiful countryside – and to mark a quarter-century since the Kosovan war

Kosovo's untouched valleys and craggy peaks are just one of the reasons tourism to the country is increasing

Tiny Kosovo lacks the stunning beaches of Albania and luxury resorts of Montenegro , but Europe’s newest country has sky-scraping peaks, pastoral countryside and heart-warming hospitality, a combination ideal for multi-day hiking and biking trips. 2024 will mark the 25th anniversary since the end of the Kosovo war, and there's much to discover in the region now. Following in the footsteps of cross-border adventure trails such as the Peaks of the Balkans and High Scardus, the Trans Dinarica cycling route opens in 2024, making its way past the minarets framing Prizren’s eponymous river, through the Ottoman market town of Gjakova and on to Peja. Perched on the edge of the Rugova Gorge, Peja serves as base camp for the country’s many outdoor adventures, including via ferratas and spelunking. A new pavestone path will soon connect the Lumbardhi River Promenade with the popular Health Trail that is the beginning of the south-to-west route through the inaptly named Accursed Mountains. Two additional forthcoming routes connect trails in the Rugova Mountains to the gushing White Drin waterfall and Radac cave. Steps from the waterfall, the sleek, modern Ujëvara e Drinit Resort specialises in rooms with a view and fresh trout dinners. While the pandemic generated a new type of traveller – nature-loving and environmentally conscious – Asturias did not have to reinvent itself to attract them. The tagline “Asturias, natural paradise”, created almost 40 years ago, represents everything we look for in a getaway. Perhaps that is why this autonomous community is the most dynamic destination in northern Spain; it welcomed more than 2.4 million visitors last year, with more international travellers than ever. The climate also helps: heatwaves are barely noticeable. This is the year to discover its natural spaces, many of them UNESCO Biosphere Reserves , via rejuvenated routes such as the Camino Primitivo, a calmer branch of the popular Camino de Santiago, through some of the country’s least-known regions. Spain’s first rural hotel, La Rectoral de Taramundi , opened here, and other noteworthy addresses include PuebloAstur Eco-Resort in the Picos de Europa mountain range, Ecoboutique’s Solo Palacio and Las Caldas Villa Termal . Alternatively, book into new arrivals Palacio de Figueras from the Vestige Collection or CoolRooms’ Palacio de Luces . The food scene also makes Asturias unmissable. Its “landscape cuisine” rivals that of the Basque Country . There are 11 Michelin stars peppered around the region as well as an emerging culinary movement in the Caudal and Nalón valleys, while chefs such as Natalia Menéndez (Casa Chuchu), Diego García (El Pintu), Paula Lamas and Jairo Rodríguez (Roble) and Xune Andrade (Mont) are on the rise. Regional capital Oviedo has been declared as the country's Gastronomic Capital for 2024, bringing together more than 200 chefs at the Euro-Toques conference in April. – Clara Laguna

For 161 years, Copenhagen ’s sprawling Carlsberg brewery held its secrets behind closed gates. When Carlsberg moved away in 2008, a plan was hatched to transform the old site, with its patinaed spires and life-size elephant statues, into a showcase neighbourhood. What attracts residents to the emergent Carlsberg District also charms visitors: copious green space, easy public transit and an evocative mash-up of contemporary and repurposed architecture, anchored by cherry-picked restaurants and shops. At the light-flooded Coffee Collective , they like to serve two roasts at once to contrast the beans’ terroirs. Aamanns , the pioneer of modernised smørrebrød, is also here, along with Neopolitan pizzeria Surt ; Kona , a destination izakaya from former Noma chef Philipp Inreiter; and Studio , by Christoffer Sørensen, a Michelin Best Young Chef. Home designers Carl Hansen and Søn, by Adelborg and PP Møbler have arrived. Fashion’s Henrik Vibskov has also moved in, packing his atelier with kaleidoscopic garments, in contrast with the classic suits of Deerest nearby. In December 2023, the brewery itself springs back to life, with a state-of-the-art, interactive visitors’ centre and the revival of its 1847 bar-room. Also to come are Friday summer parties in the courtyard and the unveiling of namesake Carl Jacobsen’s lavish gardens, open to the public for the first time since their 1890 groundbreaking. Afterwards, retire to the windowseat of your room at Hotel Ottilia overlooking the construction cranes. Go for: a fresh take after 150 years of the city

Renowned for its architecture, the Hungarian capital spans everything from art nouveau and neoclassical to gothic and baroque, with the Blue Danube connecting it all like a ribbon. And then there are the mineral-rich thermal baths, featuring ornate design flourishes. The city also buzzes with creativity, which spills over into the vibrant nightlife; the ruin bars district is a tangible example of crafting opportunity from the ashes of adversity following the brutality of Communist rule. November 2023 marks 150 years since the previously divided cities of Buda, Pest and Obuda were unified and, as well as a series of cultural events, the Chain Bridge – the city’s oldest and a “symbol of togetherness”, according to Mayor Gergely Karácsony – has fully reopened after a two-year restoration, granting excellent views of Buda Castle and the Hungarian Parliament Building. New builds such as the spectacular House of Music Hungary and the National Athletics Centre (the central stadium for 2023’s World Athletics Championships) are testament to a city with optimism for its next 150 years, as is Tui’s new route from Manchester, launching in summer 2024. The art deco W Budapest – formerly a palace and on a UNESCO World Heritage-listed street – opened in July 2023 opposite the Hungarian State Opera. Also in the Marriott portfolio is the Dorothea Hotel , with its 216 rooms and glamorous rooftop restaurant. In keeping with the musical events celebrating the 150th anniversary, the 2022 opening of the Hard Rock Hotel – Eastern Europe’s first – combines musical memorabilia (Prince’s faux-fur coat in a shade of, unsurprisingly, purple) with an in-thick-of-it location on Nagymező Street, Budapest ’s legendary louche entertainment strip. – Sarah Rodrigues

Not as show-offy as Comporta , much less known than the Algarve and with more surfer vibes than the Costa Vicentina , Costa de Prata (Silver Coast) is the strip of Portugal’s Atlantic seaboard we are most excited about right now. Start a south-to-north road trip in Ericeira, where Aethos Hotels opened an outpost in which smart design is combined with laid-back coastal cool at the end of 2022. It was hot on the heels of Immerso , a hotel full of local crafts and the same truly Portuguese personality as new restaurant and beach club Balagan. Heading north, Areias do Seixo continues to be a benchmark for luxury stays on the Costa de Prata, while in Nazaré, where German surfer Sebastian Steudtner rode a world record wave of 26.21 metres, Ohai Nazaré has family-friendly glamping. A visit to Obidos, one of the most beautiful towns in Portugal, is the perfect excuse to stay at the bohemian Literary Man or, if golf is more your thing, check in at Marriott’s Praia D’El Rey . Along the coast, surfing hub Peniche has standout beaches, including Consolação and is a great jumping-off point for the Berlengas islands, an increasingly less secret paradise. The road trip ends in Aveiro, known as the Venice of Portugal, where MS Collection Palacete de Valdemouro has just opened under the Small Luxury Hotels banner. So often overlooked in favour of its Dutch neighbour Amsterdam – or mistakenly written off as being as staid as Brussels – Antwerp is easily Belgium's most underrated city. In fact, the diamond capital of the world is somewhat of an undiscovered gem, with plenty of cool and culture for a weekend romp – and it's now easier than ever to visit thanks to the Eurostar from London (or hop on a direct flight and you can be in the city within an hour). There’s an impressive concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants to rival major European capitals. Perhaps best known is two-star The Jane , which was ranked number 39 in this year's World’s 50 Best Restaurants list and will celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2024. If the exquisite 14-course tasting menu here is out of budget, the restaurant’s sleek new bar, untitled, which opened earlier this year, offers rustic dishes at a more accessible price point, all lovingly plated before your eyes by chef Joeri Timmermans. After dinner, roll yourself next door to bag a bed at August (a former Augustinian convent turned supremely serene sanctuary), or for a sleepover in the heart of town, sister property Hotel Julien is a design-led favourite. Once you’ve eaten your way through the city’s culinary offerings, walk it all off Zuidpark , an ambitious development set for completion by spring 2024. I know, I know — those Instagram photos your friends and colleagues have been posting from Mykonos all summer have created some serious fear of missing out. But trust me when I say that many of Europe's most desirable destinations are actually much more pleasant in the fall.

After a series of sweltering heat waves spread across southern Europe this summer, autumn will finally bring some relief as the temperature drops. In the fall, you rarely have to jostle past hordes of tourists, or line up and wait to get that perfect photo — something that will be especially true this year.

Plus, since Europeans tend to travel in the summer, you're going to experience the cities more authentically now that their residents have all returned from vacation. Not to mention the fact that cultural offerings increase while the cost of flights and hotel rooms decreases as the days grow shorter.

Whether you want to spend your European holiday getting cultured, relaxing at the beach or exploring the countryside, here are 12 destinations that are best experienced in the fall.

Porto and the Douro Valley

Lisbon usually steals the spotlight, but Porto in northern Portugal is drawing more travelers. Many go to admire the beautiful azulejo tiles, learn about the city's rich history, and sample delicious Portuguese food and wine.

In Porto, visitors should spend some time strolling around the historic center and the Douro River, which is lined with cafes, bars, restaurants and shops. Then, cross the river to visit one of the historic Port wine cellars, like Graham's Lodge, the preferred cellar of the British royal family. Porto is also a great jumping-off point to visit the scenic Douro Valley, the wine region known for terraced vineyards that cascade toward the river.

To stay in the heart of the city center, book a room at Maison Albar Hotels — Le Monumental Palace, a member of the Leading Hotels of the World. Then rent a car and drive to the Douro Valley, where you should base yourself at the luxurious Six Senses Douro Valley (rates start at $868 per night).

Amalfi Coast, Capri and Ischia

In the fall, after most tourists leave, you can soak up the beautiful landscapes and lifestyle with fewer crowds and more affordable rates.

The three main towns to visit are Positano, Amalfi and Ravello, and it's a good idea to spend a day exploring each of them. There are plenty of smaller, lesser-known towns as well. In fact, between the Amalfi Coast and the nearby islands of Capri and Ischia, you could spend a week exploring the area and still not see everything. Just keep in mind that most of the top hotels close at the end of October.

The best new place to stay in Amalfi is the Anantara Convento di Amalfi , which is perfectly positioned overlooking the town and within easy walking distance of the historic center (rates from $445). The coast is also home to a few Leading Hotels of the World members, including Le Sirenuse in Positano (from $845 per night), Hotel Santa Caterina in Amalfi (from $555 per night) and Palazzo Avino in Ravello (from $647 per night). Greek islands

Who says that summer is the only time to visit the Greek islands? Fall brings pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and more affordable airfares and hotel rooms.

There are 200 inhabited islands in Greece, so you have plenty of options. If you're not sure where to start, Variety Cruises offers a handful of itineraries in Greece; the small ships depart from Athens and hop around the Cyclades and other islands. Or you could base yourself on a larger island like Crete, which has everything from ancient ruins to beautiful beaches and luxury resorts. In September and October, it's generally still warm enough to swim.

Marriott Bonvoy members will find some great options, including Cosme in Paros (from 88,000 points per night), Mystique in Santorini (from 96,000 points per night) and Blue Palace Elounda in Crete (from 70,000 points per night), all of which are members of the Luxury Collection. Also in Crete is Cretan Malia Park, which is offering a series of wellness retreats this fall (rates from $172 per night).

Although Munich draws crowds for Oktoberfest every fall, Berlin offers more cultural attractions and events. The German capital has a range of activities to suit every taste, from highbrow entertainment like opera performances to techno raves and everything in between.

This fall, the city will welcome Fotografiska Berlin, a new outpost of the Swedish photo museum. There's also the new Deutschlandmuseum and the Cold War Museum. Two exhibitions will be dedicated to the work of Edvard Munch. Go in October to see the Festival of Lights or in November for the Jazz Festival.

Book a room at the luxurious Hotel de Rome, a Rocco Forte Hotel housed in a historic bank building in east Berlin (from $404 per night). Or, redeem your Marriott Bonvoy points for a room at the Provocateur, a member of Design Hotels in west Berlin (rooms start at 30,000 points per night).

Romans use the term "l'ottobrata romana" to describe how lovely the city is in October when the summer heat has subsided and the climate is warm but mild.

Visiting archaeological sites like the Colosseum and Roman Forum is much more pleasant when you don't have to battle the crowds and the heat in the sweltering summer sun. If you've already seen those, you might want to visit the Sacred Area of Largo Argentina, where Julius Caesar was assassinated; it recently opened to the public for the first time.

While Rome's most famous dishes are available year-round, it's worth seeking out seasonal specialties featuring ingredients like porcini mushrooms, pumpkin and squash. It's also a great time of year for a daytrip to the Castelli Romani, where you can visit vineyards and taste the famous porchetta di Ariccia.

If you have Marriott Bonvoy points, you can use them at the W Rome (rooms start at 79,000 points per night in October) or the sleek new Rome Edition (from 78,400 points per night).

Aside from great weather, you'll find exciting cultural programming in Istanbul this fall. Of course, if it's your first time, you should definitely visit Topkapi Palace, the Hagia Sophia (be sure to go outside of prayer times) and the Grand Bazaar. The Blue Mosque recently emerged from a years-long restoration, so now is an ideal time to admire its famous dome.

The city's best hotel — Ciragan Palace Kempinski, built as an Ottoman sultan's palace — is a Leading Hotels of the World member, so Leader's Club members can earn and redeem points there (rates start at $513 per night). If you have World of Hyatt points, you can use them at the Park Hyatt Istanbul in the posh Nisantasi district, which is full of designer shops and chic restaurants (rates start at 20,000 points per night). Everyone loves Paris in the spring, but there's something magical about strolling through the Jardin du Luxembourg and the city's other parks when the leaves change colors.

And a few cultural attractions are adding new sparkle to the City of Light. The Maison Gainsbourg will open on Sept. 20 in singer Serge Gainsbourg's former home. It will have a cafe that becomes a piano bar by night. In November, the Musee National de la Marine (dedicated to promoting maritime heritage) is scheduled to open. And it might be worth taking a daytrip to Versailles to see Marie Antoinette's private quarters, which debuted recently.

One of the best points redemptions you can make in the city is the Park Hyatt Paris-Vendome, from 35,000 points per night. Marriott loyalists can also find great value at the Prince de Galles, a Luxury Collection Hotel which has rooms from 107,500 points per night. Though you might think of Dubrovnik as a summer destination, it's still warm enough to go to the beaches through the end of October. Plus, without the onslaught of tourist crowds, the city is quieter and more enjoyable. You can stroll through the historic center, take the cable car up to Mount Srd for panoramic views of the city and even visit an oyster farm in the nearby town of Ston.

Adriatic Luxury Hotels has 12 hotels in Dubrovnik, so whatever vibe you're looking for, you can find it at one of their properties. The Hotel Bellevue, renovated in 2019, has direct beach access and rooms from $156 per night. There's also Hotel Excelsior — the city's most iconic hotel — and Villa Orsula, which exudes Old World charm (rates from $872 per night). As part of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, Hotel Excelsior accepts reservations with Hyatt points (from 35,000 per night).

"Madrid is amazing all year long, but fall can be especially beautiful. The autumn foliage in the Retiro Park is a medley of colorful hues and the city's wine culture is even more alive than usual as it's harvest season throughout Spain," TPG writer Lori Zaino, who has lived in Madrid for 15 years, said. "Weather is often mild and sunny through early November, and by the end of the same month, Madrid is already all lit up with holiday decor, ringing in the chillier [temperatures]," she added.

Madrid has plenty of points-based hotels, including the Westin Palace, which starts at 49,000 points per night and the new Thompson Madrid , which is a great use of Hyatt points (from 12,000 World of Hyatt points per night or $400). A luxe option is the Mandarin Oriental Ritz , which reopened in 2021 and is one of the city's most historic hotels (rates from $922 per night).

Everyone talks about tulip season in the Netherlands, but autumn is just as lovely. Amsterdam's canals take on the golden hue of the Dutch master paintings you can admire at the Rijksmuseum. If there's a chill in the air, cozy up in one of the city's many brown cafes for a beer and a shot of genever. And don't miss the apple pie at Cafe Winkel 43.

Leader's Club members can earn or redeem points at the Conservatorium Hotel, a design masterpiece inside Amsterdam's old music conservatory (from $812 per night), or Hotel de L'Europe, a grand dame established in 1896 by the Heineken family (from $693 per night). Outdoorsy types will love Ticino, Switzerland' s only Italian-speaking canton. The towns on the Swiss side of Lake Maggiore have scenic hiking trails with a long history of attracting hippies and nudists. You're not likely to see them in the picturesque town of Ascona, where cobblestone streets are lined by casual restaurants, cafes and shops, though. It has a more classic Old World vibe. You can also take a boat over to the Brissago Islands, home to a stunning botanical garden.

After a day of hiking in the mountains, relax at the Hotel Eden Roc, a member of Leading Hotels of the World. It has a midcentury modern design that will make you wonder if Don Draper is about to check in. The pool overlooking the lake with its yellow umbrellas looks like something out of a Slim Aarons photograph. Rates from $353 per night.

As the days get cooler and shorter, Danes start to focus on hygge — that untranslatable concept that prizes comfort and coziness. And what better way to experience hygge than to cozy up with pastries and a cup of coffee at Copenhagen's best bakeries?

Provence, a region located in the sunny, southeastern part of France that borders Italy and the Mediterranean Sea, is quite large and every village is worth visiting. Avignon, on the other hand, sits on the Rhone River and boasts many historic attractions and sightseeing opportunities, including Palais des Papes and Pont du Gard; while the smaller provencal villages promise a laid back vacation that still offers plenty to do, plus sunny weather and small town charm. In other words, when planning an itinerary in Provence, you’ll have to do some picking and choosing (and should consider renting a car so you can explore a few different places), but this list of kid-friendly attractions in the region is a good place to start.

Shade seekers can rejoice, holiday travel trends are changing and tan-refreshing, sunbed-stewing summer getaways are on the decline.

In light of the ongoing climate crisis , Brits – habitually inclined to boil abroad – are redirecting their wanderlust to European shores where they won’t be a prisoner to a hotel room’s air-conditioning or sweat over the midday UV index.

The shift to more moderate climates comes as no surprise. A furnace of Mediterranean holiday heavyweights, from Rhodes to Gran Canaria , were ablaze with wildfires during peak travel season 2023, and temperatures are continuing to break record highs year on year.

Now’s the time to swap searing Andalusia in mainland Spain for the cooler Canaries , trade Portugal ’s Algarve for Poland ’s Baltic coast, and replace big-hitting Greek islands with German variations.

With chasing scorching sun on the backburner, here are the destinations bringing a breeze to summer holidays from wind-whipped islands to northern Europe’s fine coastline.

Ostend, Belgium

• Average high in August: 21C
• Average low in August: 15C

Though best known for its chocolate, beer and the hub of EU democracy that is Brussels , it would be foolish to turn your nose up at Belgium ’s beach resorts. Let Flanders’s largest, Ostend , sweep you away to its golden sands this summer for mornings spent kitesurfing and afternoons filled with fresh oysters on the Albert I Promenade – all without the need to retreat from the heat.

Oslo, Norway

• Average low in August: 13C

The Norwegian capital is a tangle of hip districts – specifically buzzy Grünerløkka – boutique stores and al fresco dining spots fringed with by thick Marka forest (where you can go for active pursuits, including zip lining and mountain biking). Slick museums on the Oslo Pass, such as the Munch Museum, meet the culture criteria for a city break while taking a dip in seawater pools and drying off in Nordic saunas nails the R&R element of a standard summer holiday.

La Gomera, Canary Islands

• Average high in August: 28C
• Average low in August: 21C

While mainland Spain sizzles, an Atlantic onshore breeze blows through the Canary Islands , blessing balmy year-round La Gomera with inviting 20C days for holidaymakers to indulge in hiking, black-sand bathing and foodie feasts of melon lobster and marmalade rabbit. The bearable heat doesn’t sacrifice sunshine, with around nine hours of vitamin D on offer in August.

Tartu, Estonia

• Average low in August: 11C

Inevitably laden with sweaty vista climbs, winding refreshment queues and daily step tallies in the thousands, comfort is key on a city break, and the 2024 Capital of Culture , Tartu has just the climate for exploring Estonia . There is an elegant Town Hall Square primed for mass kissing events (yes, really), the sleek Estonian National Museum, and timber barges on the Emajõgi River for a sailor’s view of the peaceful landscape.

Sopot, Poland

• Average high in August: 22C
• Average low in August: 12C

Seafront Sopot, in the Tricity region of the “Baltic Riviera”, is an affordable alternative to the beloved big names further south  and  at its warmest come August. A short train ride from all the history of Gdansk , 4km of tempting beaches, Europe ’s longest wooden pier and stylish health spas dot the fairy tale-esque facades and locals hail Sopot for its beachfront nightlife scene and, of course, decadent waffles.

Sylt, Germany

• Average high in August: 20C
• Average low in August: 16C

A magnet for the German elite, the North Frisian Islands’ mild microclimate, pinstriped strandkorbs (hooded wicker seats wide enough for two) and pristine pale sands understandably attract travellers to Sylt’s west coast. A Michelin-rosette gastronomy scene, thatched cottages and lighthouse-scattered peninsulas make this balmy under-the-radar beach break one to add to your list.

Lake Bled, Slovenia

Slovenia ’s most famous attraction sparkles under the summer sun and Lake Bled’s inviting turquoise glacial waters will help you keep your cool on climbs up to the medieval Bled Castle and romantic rows around the fantasy island. Where the legendary lakes of Garda and Como sweat with crowds in Italy , Bled’s slice of the Julian Alps, though inevitably busy, offers forest trails suited for secluded alpine hikes.

Machico, Madeira

• Average high in August: 26C

Leave the scorching Algarve for a more temperate Atlantic alternative on Portugal ’s Madeira archipelago. Sandwiched between mountains, far east Machico has a wave-battered artificial beach with golden grains imported from Africa , well-groomed gardens and a vision of terracotta roofs dotting its landscape. 

Pori, Finland

On Finland ’s west coast, the city of Pori is a centre for jazz music, Finnish street eats (including  porilainen,  an elevated sausage sandwich), and, star of Scandinavia, Yyteri Beach: 6km of white sand geared for windsurfing, bird watching, beach volleyball and barbecues. With the Kokemäenjoki River and Bothnian Sea National Park, this diverse destination has mastered sub-30C summer culture.

Haarlem, Netherlands

• Average high in August: 19C

Head to Haarlem for tulips, vinyls, hidden  hofje  courtyards and a fair share of canals. Amsterdam ’s less-crowded neighbour serves a slice of Dutch cool without the sweaty shoulder brushes with strangers. It has a popular shopping scene as well as a brewing culture backdating to the 14th century, and active pursuits can be found in the Zuid-Kennemerland National Park. 

Skagen, Denmark

On Denmark ’s northeastern peninsula, the port town of Skagen has art museums and fine dining to rival the country’s effortlessly cool capital Copenhagen . Whisps of cloud paint the skies and wild nature patrols the pale grains of the Grenen sandbar that straddles the Baltic and North Sea. Better still, August’s T-shirt and light-layers weather is ideal for exploring this stretch of the Rabjerg Mile – a migrating coastal sand dune.

If you or someone you know has ever taken a trip to Europe, one of the first things they’ll tell you is how much walking they did. European cities are much more pedestrian-friendly than most American counterparts. You’ll clock several miles just by hitting the main sights. Additionally, there are plenty of countryside and hiking destinations waiting to be explored on foot. Here are 20 of the best!

London, United Kingdom

Since London is one of the biggest cities in Europe, you might not think that the metropolis would be very walkable. However, it’s frequently cited as a great place to stroll around. You’ll be so busy taking in the English grandeur and catching glimpses of Big Ben that you won’t even notice how high your step count is until you take a rest at the pub!

The French Alps

The Alps are definitely more of a hiking than a walking destination, but with sweeping mountain and lake views, you won’t want to do much else! Base yourself in Grenoble, Annecy, or Chamonix, and enjoy trails that start right from town.

Cinque Terre, Italy

Cinque Terre is known for brightly colored buildings built into the cliffsides. And while each town is a virtual rainbow dotting the seaside, there’s a better way to enjoy the area than sitting in traffic in a car or bus. Instead, take the many walking paths that connect the towns. Ideally, you’ll base yourself in one of the villages and enjoy hikes along the Mediterranean while visiting others.

Paris, France

Another large European capital with decent public transportation, it may seem silly to walk all over Paris. Au contraire, your own two feet are the best way to see the City of Light. You can wander along the Seine, crisscross the water with the many bridges, and dip into the 20 diverse arrondissements (neighborhoods.) All while frequently enjoying unbeatable views of the Eiffel Tower, L’Arc de Triomphe, and the ornate Parisian buildings.

The Cotswolds, United Kingdom

If one region on this list is known for walking, it’s the Cotswolds. Well-trodden walking paths connect the numerous villages in the west of England. You can choose a single base and enjoy walking the English countryside to different adorable towns!

High Tatra, Slovakia

Slovakia isn’t well known by any means, but this country nestled between Hungary, Poland, Austria, and Czechia is a fantastic place to trek, particularly in the Tatras Mountains in the northeast. Travelers will enjoy trails that rival those in the Alps but for a much more affordable price.

Meteora, Greece

A Greek holiday typically involves taking ferries to the islands, where you don’t do much but enjoy the beach and amazing food. Meteroa, roughly a five-and-a-half-hour train ride from Athens, challenges this assumption greatly. Here, you’ll be nestled among mountain villages and paths that connect the six monasteries atop the peaks. Spend a few days or a week exploring the views and sites on foot!

Basque Country, Spain

This unique part of the country has spectacular natural beauty. It's famously home to the Camino de Santiago, the ancient pilgrimage walk that numerous travelers now partake in every year. The full route includes sections in Portugal and France, but the best views are in Spain!

Haute Route, Switzerland

Honestly, the entire country of Switzerland is any hiker’s paradise, but if you only have time for one trail, head to Zermatt. This is where the stunning Haute Route through the Swiss Alps starts, ending in Chamonix, France. The 132-mile trek isn’t for beginners, but you’ll be rewarded with Matterhorn views and uncrowded trails.

Lake Constance, Germany

The lake technically spans Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and Liechtenstein. Complete walking routes in each country or take one that crosses a border or two. One of the most beautiful lakes on the continent, there are numerous routes to choose from! 

South Coast of Iceland

Iceland is another country that could be listed as a great place to walk on the whole, however, for ease of access and proximity of sites. The trails aren’t too far apart, and in general, you’ll never be far from a waterfall, canyon, beach, or glacier.

Venice, Italy

Okay, a trip to Venice likely conjures up visions of gondola rides on the water. And you should definitely see the city that way. However, it’s also a great place to walk.

Julian Alps, Slovenia

You’ve heard of the French Alps, the Swiss Alps, and the Bavarian Alps. Well, where exactly are the ‘Julian’ Alps? The beautiful gem that is Slovenia! The first Balkan country to join the EU is home to stunning peaks that are just waiting to be discovered by travelers. And you won’t pay Swiss or French prices and have fewer crowds to deal with!

Munich, Germany

The biggest city in Bavaria is a sprawling center of grandeur and parks. Thus, there’s no better way to explore than by foot. Additionally, there are a bunch of museums, all of which are must-visits. Plan a cultural weekend that also has a bit of exercise in Munich!

Lisbon, Portugal

Famously hilly Lisbon (like San Fransisco) isn’t the place to expect a leisurely stroll. However, if you’re up for some “urban hiking,” you’ll get a great workout while passing the street cars.

Riga, Latvia

The gorgeous Daugava River runs through the beautiful colored buildings of Riga, inviting you to amble for hours. And as a lesser-known destination, you want to be rubbing elbows with hordes of other American tourists, making for a much more enjoyable trip.

Stockholm, Sweden

Unless you really like frigid walks and bundling up, it’s most advisable to visit Stockholm in the summer months. Then, you can make the most out of rambling around the Scandinavian city in the sun and enjoying fika (Swedish coffee break) afterward.

Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina

Sarajevo isn’t so large that enjoying a walking tour is out of the question. However, the best way to use your feet in the area is by hiking up one of the many paths from the city center into the surrounding hills for fantastic vantage points. Alternatively, take the chairlift up and wander back down the old bobsled run from the 1984 Winter Olympics.

Prague, Czechia

While Paris might be a more obvious choice for a walking city, Prague is actually much larger in square miles. In fact, it’s four times as large, with about half the inhabitants. Thus, there’s plenty of room to wander and appreciate the lovely architecture in Prague. Additionally, there are trails in and around the urban center if you want a taste of nature. And, of course, fantastic hiking is never far away.

Wild Atlantic Way, Ireland

The Wild Atlantic Way is one of the best and most rugged walking paths in all of Europe. At 1,600 miles, it’s no surprise that it’s considered one of the longest-marked paths in the world. Located on Ireland’s West Coast, no matter what short section you choose to complete, you’ll have once-in-a-lifetime views of the Atlantic Ocean and Irish countryside for the duration.

This Quaint Town in Portugal Was Just Named the Best Place to Invest in Europe — and It Has Stunning Beaches

Lush pine forests, cobblestone streets, endless ocean views, and low real estate prices await in this quaint community in northern Portugal.

Portugal is on everyone's mind these days. The country's sunny weather , many beaches , and affordable cost of living have made it a popular choice for retirees and digital nomads. However, as is often the case, real estate prices in some of its most sought-after regions, like the capital, Lisbon and Algarve , have soared. But that doesn't mean you should give up on your dream of owning property in Portugal.

A new report by International Living ranked the small, under-the-radar- town of Caminha the best place to invest in real estate in Europe for its value and growth potential. 

The community is located in the northwest along the mouth of the Minho River, which separates Portugal from Spain, and is home to about 16,000 residents. International Living gave Caminha a perfect score of 10 in the relative value category and nine for quality of life and stability.

"Caminha, which is only separated from Spain by a river, completely charmed me," Ronan McMahon, founder of Real Estate Trend Alert and author of International Living's Global Real Estate Index, told Travel + Leisure . "It has a beautiful Old Town surrounded by a verdant and bucolic countryside, with mountains, rivers, forests, and fields overflowing with brightly colored flowers and fruit trees heavy with their bounty. And then there are the stunning Atlantic beaches."

The ancient town has plenty of character, with fountains, churches, and other buildings dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries. And it's easily accessible from Porto, which is just an hour and 15 minutes south, providing access to an international airport. 

Jeff Opdyke, International Living's personal finance editor, called Caminha a "holdover of Portugal before tourism and modernity swept over Lisbon, the Algarve, and Porto," where affordable real estate is still the norm. 

Potential buyers can find apartments downtown for as low as $150,000 and stand-alone houses for $280,000 .

And while Caminha is the best place to invest in Europe, another destination took the top prize for global real estate value: Mexico's Los Cabos. International Living ranked first with almost perfect scores in categories such as income potential, climate, and international appeal. Riviera Maya and Estepona in Spain, a town in the country's famous Costa del Sol region, are tied for the third place.
