Pair Horseback Riding and Wine Tasting at These 7 Resorts

A photo collage of a wine glass with two horses on both sides

From the medieval monks who used draft horses to clear vineyards in Burgundy , to the horse culture of Spain’s Jerez de la Frontera, celebrated annually during Feria del Caballo, horses and wine have long held a deep connection.

Today, serious wine programs and riding opportunities abound at resorts across North America. Guests can spend the day on a saddle and come back to a bottle of wine made possible by the industry’s horse-loving pioneers.

Here are seven horseback riding and wine resorts to check out.

The Equestrian Hotel

Ocala, florida.

The Equestrian Hotel Ocala, Florida Ariel view

Tucked amid the oaks and streams of central Florida sits the Equestrian Hotel , a 380-acre resort dedicated to horse pursuits.

Many Kentucky Derby-winning horses are bred in Ocala, giving the hotel a natural connection to the sport.

Saturday night competitions see up to 7,500 spectators gathered at the Grand Arena to watch show jumpers compete for prizes of $100,000.

Pageantry from the ring moves to the restaurants where in-house Master Sommelier Roland Micu oversees a 6,000-bottle wine program of rare vintage releases and multiyear verticals from producers Penfolds , Harlan Estate , Château Latour and Château D’Yquem .

Aside from the list, the property regularly offers experiences from winemaker dinners to region-focused tastings as part of the Stirrup Wine Series held at the resort’s signature restaurant helmed by Chef Ryker Brown.

The Resort at Paws Up

Greenough, montana.

Paws Up - Woman on horse rounding up cows

The Resort at Paws Up has long made wine and food a priority, securing heralded names to spend weekends on site. Recent winemaker dinners have hosted Rich Aurilia of Red Stitch Wine , Dan Kosta of AldenAlli Winery and Lindsay Woodard of Retour Wines .

When not wining and dining, guests spend both winter and summer days on horseback, exploring the 37,000-acre bison and cattle ranch set in the Blackfoot River Valley.

Activities include a dude ranch cattle drive during which guests can find, collect and push Corriente cows into pastures. The property has plenty for kids to do, too, and riding lessons at the Saddle Club are a highlight for many families. There’s also Cow Croquet, a wrangling game on horseback set inside the Saddle Club’s indoor arena.

Alisal Ranch

Solvang, california.

Alisal Ranch Rodeo ring

Canyons, hills and streams comprise the various landscapes riders can traverse at Alisal Ranch , founded in 1946 in the Santa Ynez Valley . The stable of 100 horses accommodates neophytes and experienced riders alike. One of the most popular activities is the two-hour scenic trail ride beneath the oak trees, open to all experience levels.

Guests feeling ambitious can try a wrangler skills workshop that can cover everything from roping, barrel racing, or team sorting class. The latter teaches students the basics of sorting cattle, an essential skill on a ranch.

The property’s 10,500 acres hold 73 guest cottages and suites, more than 50 miles of horseback riding trails and is a 30-minute drive from Santa Barbara wine country.

Alisan Ranch Landscape scene

Guests needn’t leave the property to indulge in local wines, though. Alisal Ranch’s cellar is dominated by Central Coast producers with an emphasis in the Santa Ynez Valley and Santa Maria Valley .

“We highlight organic, biodynamic and sustainably farmed wines; work primarily with small family-owned producers; and care for a collection of library wines that go back into the 1980s,” says Patton Penhallegon, winemaker and beverage consultant at Alisal Ranch.

Salamander Resort & Spa

Where the Blue Ridge Mountains meet horse country sits the Salamander Resort , a 340-acre property in Middleburg, Virginia . Popular with wine tourists, the Salamander Resort combines both pastimes under the roof of one estate with 168 rooms and suites.

Guests can book trail rides, lessons, “horse whispering” sessions and essential horsemanship classes in the Equestrian Center, a 14,000-square-foot stable with 22 stalls, nine paddocks and an outdoor riding arena. Follow a day in the saddle with a flight of Virginia wines in the Gold Cup Wine Bar. During dinner at Harrimans Virginia Piedmont Grill, peruse the extensive wine list curated by Salamander’s sommelier, Catherine Watkins.

Carmel Valley Ranch

Carmel, california.

Carmel Valley Ranch , a resort in the heart of Monterey County wine country, has 181 suites on 500 acres of land. In spring 2021, the property introduced a new Equine Experiences program.

Therapeutic sessions foster bonding with horses, a concept developed and led by licensed therapist Robert G. Magnelli, PhD, also known as “The Horseman.” The popular “Equine & Wine” session combines wine tasting in the hills with the ranch’s herd. When not nuzzling muzzles or touring nearby wineries, guests can swim, hike, hit the links, play tennis or relax in the spa.

At sunset, a daily happy hour features local wines. The bar, Valley Kitchen , offers an international list alongside creations of in-house winemaker Ian Brand, the 2018 Central Coast Winemaker of the Year.

C Lazy U Ranch

Granby, colorado.

Near Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park, C Lazy U Ranch has operated for over a century. Founded in 1919, the lodge has retained its rustic cowboy roots while offering guests a dude ranch vacation replete with modern indulgences.

The ranch’s 38 rooms and cabins underwent renovations in 2021, though western décor and stone fireplaces remain intact. Guests can brush up on their skills with private lessons or book one of several daily trail rides, as well as fish, zipline and partake in other outdoor activities.

An on-site sommelier manages the extensive wine cellar, which has numerous allocated labels and vintages.

St. James, Jamaica

Half Moon, St James, Jamaica - swimming with horses

Half Moon in Jamaica offers 210 rooms and suites, 27 villas and one of the Caribbean’s best wine programs and equestrian centers.

Certified sommelier Sherrie Lee-McCallum oversees three cellars that include bottles from the world’s great and underappreciated regions. At The Stables , choose from a breadth of activities depending on skill and riding style, from jumping to polo lessons or easy beach rides through the waves.

Saddle Up Wine Tours

#1 Saddle Up Wine Tours

So when you spend money here, all the funds go directly to these beautiful creatures.

Saddle Up has several different horseback wine tasting tours that you can choose from. Each tour meets at Leoness Cellars where you sign a release form, get helmet, and receive instruction. Then, you will head out on the open trail visiting wineries along the way. Each winery gives you 5-6 wine tastings which equals a glass of wine at each location.

The great thing is that the total price you pay includes both the horseback riding and your wine tasting at each winery. You can visit up to three wineries along your journey. If you are looking for an experience you will never forget, you will want to try Saddle Up Wine Tours.

Horseback Riding AND Wine Tasting

A one-day tour includes lunch, two selected wineries, and your horseback tour. The cost is $245 per person plus your tasting fees and taxes. Or, if you don’t feel like you can ride a horse for a whole day, you can climb aboard the Hay Wagon Winery Tour. On the hay wagon, you get to visit four wineries and tour Thursday through Sunday.

Along with wine and horseback riding, Cherry Wood also offers teepee lodging for each night of the week. If you choose to stay on a weekend, you will need to stay a minimum of two days which includes a full breakfast and complimentary use of the Twilight tubs. Health & well-being Feldenkrais method s are also available to improve balance and performance for horse riders.

When you come to Cherry Wood, you get everything all in one place.

Red Mountain Trails

5 Rebel’s Run Horseback Riding AND Wine Tasting

In Afton, you can take a 2.5 hour vineyard ride through the Afton Mountain Vineyard. Not only will you see local wildlife, but you will stop off at the local winery to sample some of the finest wines in Virginia. Whether you are a beginner or a novice rider, the horses at Rebel’s Run are gentle, well-trained, and will make sure you enjoy your saddleback winery tour.

6 Indian Summer Guide Service

If you are looking for a shorter ride, Indian Summer Guide Service in Keswick offers just an hour long vineyard ride. Taking you through four locally owned wineries: King Family Vineyards, Glass House Winery, Pollak Vineyards, and Veritas Vineyard and Winery, each horseback ride is a ride to remember.

Milk and cookies, cheese and crackers, salt and pepper. There are many things that just go better together in pairs, and we think, wine and horses go together just like eggs and bacon. What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

Horseback Riding & Wine Tasting Tour

Leave the noise and the crowds behind, jump on our horses for half a day, and explore the vineyards of Brunello di Montalcino. Enjoy great wines at the end of the tour. For intermediate riders who want to see the famous Brunello terroir up close.

Private tours

Not included, transportation.

riding wine tour

One of the best ways to understand the Brunello terroir is on horseback. Join our trekking tours!

Experience the Tuscan countryside on horseback: this adventure starts from the Montalcino Equestrian Center, follows dirt roads along the vineyards of Brunello and ends at a historic winery where you will visit the cellar and taste the great wines of Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello, and Super Tuscans.

We ask you to be at the Equestrian Center 15 minutes before the start of your excursion. You can drop off your belongings where they will be safely stored at the clubhouse and enjoy your horseback experience.

Depending on your level, the instructor will assign you a specific horse. The Horseback Trekking Tour lasts about 3 hours taking white roads, forests, Brunello vineyards, and olive groves. We pass through different properties and wineries, see castles and ford small creeks.

Passing through the fields where the grapes for Brunello grow , it is possible to see up close how the rows are trimmed and how the vines and soil are managed in Montalcino. We stop here and there to take pictures and to rest or talk to the vignerons that we meet along the way.

At the end of the tour, we stop at a historic Brunello di Montalcino winery to meet an expert who will guide you through the estate including the cellar, barrel and fermentation rooms, while explaining the winemaking process of Montalcino.

Finally, we end up in the tasting room where we can enjoy these great wines .

The total tour lasts for 4-5 hours.

What's included

  • bilingual (Italian and English) equestrian tour guide
  • purebred Maremma horse
  • light lunch at the farm or gourmet picnic in the fields (depending on the weather)
  • guided winery tour with tastings of Super Tuscans, Rosso and Brunello di Montalcino
  • 24/7 on-call assistance

What's not included

  • Transfer from/to your accommodation (available as an extra. Contact us)
  • Required Attire

We believe that the deep soul of Montalcino in the Val d’Orcia can be picked only through the intimacy and respect of the small group. This is why all our horseback riding trips are designed, created and optimized for small groups of 6-8 people.

This tour is for intermediate riders . If not sure of your experience, please consider the easiest tours: the Horseback riding& Lessons

Horseback riding is a weather dependent activity so if the tour has to be deleted and cannot be rearranged at your convenience then you will receive a full refund.

We strongly recommend sporty clothes with proper walking boots and long pants (shorts not allowed!).

The Cap is provided by us.

I have never ridden a horse in my life. Is this experience good for me?

No it isn’t. We suggest to choose the basic version of the horseback riding experiences. We can add the winery tour and tasting to it: just let us know in the notes when you book.

Having the day with Mario touring us around Montalcino was easily one of the highlights of our stay in Tuscany. Mario was a pleasure to talk with and was a wealth of information regarding not only the vineyards we visited that day but about the wines, other vineyards and the history of Montalcino. Obviously, with Mario being a native, we felt like we had an insiders view which he was very open in sharing. Brad, wanting to know as much as he could, about Montalcino vineyards, the different growing regions, Brunello di Montalcino and where the best restaurants & enotecas were… Mario had answers to All his never ending questions. While Molly & I had just met Mario that day, we felt we knew him as a friend by days end…which we didn’t want to end. What a fabulous, memorable day. We can’t wait to go back again and maybe this time help pick some grapes or olives! Molto Bene Ciao for now, Brad & Molly Kushnir

This day was the highlight of our honeymoon in Italy. I have recommended Mario to anyone I know going to the Tuscany area. He truly made us feel like VIP the entire day. We ended up shipping several cases of the best wine in the world home to the US and now refuse to drink anything else. This was one of the best experiences in my life.

No other touring company could compare to the true hospitality we were shown. We left feeling like family and plan on going back as much as possible to see our friend Mario.

We just returned from a fabulous 3 week trip to Italy. Montalcino Wine Tours were there for us each leg of our trip. From transfers Venezia to Cinque Terra, stopping in Verona for lunch; Cinque Terra to Firenze stopping for a tasty lunch on the way. Mario was a very good driver, sensitive to my car sickness! On to our Villa Fonntelle in Montalcino, Giovanni took us for our best day of the trip. Wine tasting and a scrumptious lunch at his restaurant, beautiful view and the best food we’d had in the three weeks! Truffle hunting was another great day, never ending fun with these guys. Mario was a lot fun on our Cortona day trip, they all really went above and beyond a regular tour company.

The hosts at each winery were wonderful and very knowledgeable about their wines and the history. We also visited Sant’Antimo Abbey in between winery visits and had a spectacular lunch.

Well well well worth the money and would use these guys for a tour again. Highly recommended

We visited a nice mix of places, from very small family-run farms to midsized wineries. Each place had a unique brand and take on the wine process so it was nice to see the differences in the process each family does. We loved all the wines, he made purchasing and shipping product home incredibly easy. I hope to get the chance to take this tour again on our next trip to Tuscany.

Where do I begin? For starters, the experience was so fantastic the first time, that we booked Mario for a second tour on our return two years later. Mario will gladly pick you up wherever you are staying, he’s prompt, his car is clean, and the anticipation for a day of wine tasting is next to none! Mario arranged for us to have private tours and tastings at each of the wineries we visited, and each one was just as fantastic as the one before. Mario is extremely knowledgable on all things Brunello wine….from how the location of the vineyard to how the grapes are processed and the impact on the flavor and quality of the wines.

Thanks to Mario, our wine cellar is full of many different Brunello wines, and each time we pop the cork, we travel back to exactly where the grapes were born. Absolutely, 100%, without a doubt, book Mario for your Montalcino wine tour!

Both times I had a fantastic and knowledgable driver, awesome lunch, a well thought out and planned itinerary, and flexibility around my specific requests. This last trip in June 2022 we even had a little bit of extra time between appointments and they managed to find an opening at another winery, which ended up having absolutely amazing wine. These wine tours are as good as any I’ve had in other winery locations such as Napa and Sonoma. Highly recommend.

Mario was an outstanding conversationalist we hit it off right away! He took me to Montepulciano and recommended a restaurant and wine for lunch. The scenery was incredible! I loved every minute of my tour which led me through many small villages where I was able to meander through cheese and wine shops. On the way back to where I was staying Mario drove me through Montelcino which is the most quaint town. After a full 8 hours of spectacular scenery and wonderful conversation I was dropped off. It was truly the highlight of my 18 day trip to Italy.

If in Montalcino, not to be missed. Giovanni and Chiara coordinated with us prior to our arrival to understand our interests to customize our day. We were looking for smaller wineries.

Giovanni picked us at 9:45. We visited two wineries in the morning. We spent time walking in the vineyards and cellars talking about the wine growing process and the special policies for cellaring and bottling the Rosso and Brunello de Montalcino wines. And of course tasting the wines. We met the winemaker at the second winery.

Next up was lunch at Locanda Demetra, a small restaurant and cooking school located just outside the city with beautiful views of the countryside. We ate outside and had an appetizer sampler, two small pasta dishes, a pork medallion, a bottle of Rosso de Montalcino, dessert of chocolate cake and gelato, and coffee. All part of the tour costs.

After a leisurely lunch, we visited the Abbey at San Antimo for a quick visit and off to one last winery.

We finished the day around 6:15 pm. We never felt rushed. We had time to soak it all in, ask questions, and really enjoy the whole experience. We bought wine along the way. All of the wineries ship back to USA. We decided to take our wine and let this company ship them all back together. Quite reasonable for international shipping. All of the wines from this region are of high quality and very reasonable comparing to Napa Valley for similar quality wines.

I would highly recommend this tour to anyone that is a wine enthusiast.

From beginning to end Montalcino Wine Tours was absolutely perfect! We started with email correspondence with Giovanni. We only had one day for a guided tour, so he helped us by organizing the best day. Our guide Chiara was so knowledgeable! She was professional, but also personable and made us feel right at home. Our day began with a truffle hunt with Paolo (and his dog Millie). If you are in Tuscany during truffle hunting seasons, you must book this with Montalcino Wine Tours, specifically Paolo. Again, so knowledgeable. And an unforgettable experience. Our lunch was DIVINE! We had a little extra time in the afternoon, as we were ahead of schedule. Not a problem – Chiara drove us to the Abbey of Sant’Antimo to explore. A beautiful spot to walk off our lunch and take pictures of the gorgeous scenery. We ended our day at La Fornace Winery and sampled their delicious wine! We will definitely be recommending Montalcino Wine Tours to friends and family travelling in the area. It was our favorite day of our entire vacation. Thank you!!

I booked a full day in Montalcino with Giovanni in advance of a family trip to Italy (me, my wife, and both sets of our parents). I reached out to a number of tour operators, but many would not do a day trip to Montalcino due to the distance (we were staying at a villa about an hour south, on the border of Tuscany and Umbria). Giovanni ensured us that it would not be a problem and that we would have a fantastic, full day. He could not have been more right.

We were picked up early by our driver for the day, Mario, in a clean, spacious van. Mario was THE BEST – no better resource for a day of being in Montalcino. He has spent his life in and around Montalcino (his grandfather was the fireman, his father the postman, and his brother the Mayor).

Mario took us to two fantastic wineries, to the Abbey of Sant’Antimo, which was absolutely beautiful. We also had an amazing lunch in Montalcino and spent some time walking around the town. On our way back to the villa, Mario insisted that we make two additional stops, first was to see the villa that was featured in Gladiator, and then a stop in Pienza for the pecorino.

All in all a great day and highly recommended!

Our day started with a little adversity with a vehicle, which resulted in getting started a little later than expected, which ultimately caused us to miss first vineyard. Chiara handled the situation perfectly and in no time we were back up and running with a replacement vehicle and we were off for a fantastic day!

Chiara made a few calls whist we were visiting our first vineyard, and was able to make arrangements for us to make a visit to a 3rd vineyard/winery at the end of our day. WOW, talk about going above and beyond!

After our first stop we were taken to lunch at an amazing restaurant right in Montalcino which included wine and whatever we wanted to eat. We were given amazing treatment and service by the owner Antinio and the food was incredible!

After lunch we headed for our 2nd stop was absolutely incredible and were intrigued with her passion for her wines, her family and the pride was evident. we LOVED this stop, highly recommend and the wine was fantastic and free to pour as much as we wanted!

Our final stop was Baricci. Although the production is VERY small, if you love Brunello you have to make it a point to stop in here (if you can get a visit) or at least try their wine while in Montalcino. Francesco, his brother Federico and father Pietro are very busy as they are the heart and soul of this family run winery and we were VERY lucky (thanks to Chiara no doubt) to be able to get a visit to see them just after harvest! Francesco spent so much time with us we couldn’t believe it, his passion is second to none and it shows in the amazing product that they produce there! The POS machine was down during the evening, so we went back the next day to conclude our purchase, the entire family was there again working away! (Side note: They ship to Canada, wooohooo)

Overall the experience provided by Chiara and Montalcino Wine Tours was truly amazing and I would HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who visits the Montalcino area.

Once again, thanks so much for having us!

We asked for a one-day tour of Montalcino wineries, and Giovanni put together the itinerary.

We were 7 travelers, wine lovers but not experts, stopping in Porto Santo Stefano aboard a SeaDream Yacht Club cruise. Our driver, Luca, picked us up at the port in a clean, comfortable, and spacious van. Luca was friendly, knowledgeable, and funny.

We went to a medium sized, well known winery in the morning. We toured the vineyard and cellar and tasted 6 great wines. And these were pretty generous pours for a tasting (this was a theme for the day). We lingered, drank, and ate, and liked the wine so much that we bought several bottles on our way out. With the strong US dollar, we were surprised by the reasonable prices for decently aged (2010, 2012, 2015) Riserva wines.

Most enjoyable day touring the Montalcino vineyards! Chiara was our guide, and was awesome! Her passion for wine, and her knowledge of Montalcino and local wine were very evident. We communicated in advance so she could find out our wine background, interests, and preferences. We did the six-hour, 2 vineyard tour with lunch included.

Chiara picked us up at our hotel right on time and in a comfortable ride. She took us to 2 small, family-owned vineyards where we got a tour of the vineyard and quality time spent with the winemaker. Chiara acted as translator at the first vineyard where the winemaker did not speak much English. We had nice tastings at each vineyard (in the homes of the winemakers) and the opportunity to purchase wine from each vineyard. Chiara handled the details for shipping back to the US.

After visiting the vineyards, we had a marvelous lunch at the local cooking school (Locandra Demetra). Amazing lunch with an amazing view!!

Highly recommend Montalcino Wine tours and Chiara as a guide!!

Horseback riding in montalcino.

We had an amazing day with Giovanni and his beautiful horses! The Montalcino landscape could not have been more stunning, and having the opportunity to ride among and experience the local wineries was an experience we will never forget. Plus, the lunch and wine tasting at local winery and restaurant il Cocco was delicious and gave us an up-close look at how wine is grown, bottled and sold in this unique region.

y wife and I booked unforgettable wine and food experiences with Chiara this past week. Chiara is a rock star in Montalcino and seems to know everyone in the area. You tell her what you are interested in and let her do her magic. There isn’t a reservation she can’t book. Total access and you will not only enjoy the tastings but the ride and conversation with her is worth the trip as well. She should be the Mayor of Montalcino. In any case she has my vote. 🙂 Also, if you have not done a deeper dive vineyard and food tour in Montalcino, then make it a priority. Just the best!

We can’t possibly recommend Montalcino Wine Tours enough! Our whole experience with them was absolutely fantastic. On the planning side, Chiara was so incredibly helpful and always available to answer questions and give us options for the things we wanted to do. She even helped us arrange transportation out of Montalcino, which isn’t the easiest thing to do. And then the experience itself was perfect. We did a Brunello wine tour with Giovanni, who is extremely knowledgeable about both the Montalcino area and winemaking (we learned more about wine in those hours with Giovanni than we have anywhere else), and it was everything we hoped it would be. Great wine, beautiful lunch, informative, and so much fun. Just tell Chiara and her team what you want to do, and they will make it all happen for you. Thank you SO much, Chiara and Giovanni! Our time in Montalcino was magical and everything we needed to relieve the stress of the last few years.

We had the most amazing and memorable day in Montalcino thanks to Giovanni!! My boyfriend and I scheduled a private tour with Giovanni, and he was punctual, knowledgeable, warm, and created the most perfect day for us in this small wine country city. He picked us up from our hotel, and we headed to our first winery. This was a small winery, that took the time to give a tour of their vineyard and their facility. It gave us such an appreciation of the wine we enjoyed later that visit. We met the winery owner and his daughter, and got know them and their experience as a winery owner in Italy.

From there we went to a medium sized winery and then a large one. Each appointment was set up in advance by Giovanni, and they were ready and expecting us. It was such a neat experience and not at all like the herd feeling we get when wine tasting in the US.

In between we went to lunch at a small restaurant in Giovanni’s village – which was so quaint – only 53 people live there! The food, wine, and service were amazing!

Giovanni was so knowledgeable, professional, and warm. He made this experience an experience of a lifetime and I would refer him and go back to him in a heartbeat!

We actually did the cooking class with his brother the next day, I’ll be sharing a review with them as well. Another absolute must while in Montalcino!!

Thank you Giovanni for the memories of a lifetime!

We enjoyed an all day wine tour with Giovanni in September during a 4 day stay in Tuscany. We were were traveling with our daughter and her husband, who had hired Giovanni two years previous, so we knew we were in for a treat. He arranged 2 different winery visits and tastings in the Montalcino area, plus a delicious Al Fresco lunch overlooking his own vineyard. One winery was a small scale, personal operation, and the other a more sophisticated larger scale winery, both with tours by the proprietors. The wineries were nicely curated for our interests, and we were delighted with both. The tours were fascinating, in depth and inspiring. We were picked up promptly in a spacious van, and Giovanni was quite personable and engaging and easy to talk with. We thoroughly enjoyed his company and would highly recommend his tours.

Wow! I can’t say enough good things about this tour! We were in Tuscany for a wedding and a group of 13 of us booked this tour. Giovanni and Chiara picked us up at our Villa in 2 really nice, air conditioned vans. Then we were off to our first winery and tasting. We learned so much about the area, wine, weather and any other question we could throw at them!😊. They are so incredibly knowledgeable about the area. The first winery was fantastic, we learned so much about the process and tastes amazing wines. Then they took us to a tour of an Abbey which was so inspiring and beautiful, and then to lunch on their family farm. Holy smokes!! Alessandro, Giovanni’s brother and their family hosts an incredible lunch….you might as well be part of the family as that’s how you feel as soon as you sit down at the table! After a lunch that is so tasty, you are off to another vineyard and tasting. Another great choice! All the staff at both wineries are so friendly and make the tastings so much fun! Then they drove us back to our Villa…we were with them the entire day but it flew by as we were having so much fun learning about wines and the entire Tuscany area. I would HIGHLY recommend this tour! You will be treated to a fantastic day!

My husband and I booked the full day wine tour through Giovanni months in advance of arriving in Italy. Booking was very smooth over email. Mario, our driver picked us up at our hotel in the morning and assured us we had a great day ahead visiting three different types of wineries with a stop for lunch at Locanda Demtra. He took us to Collosorbo which was an old estate winery owned by a mother and her two daughters. We had a wonderful tour of the estate and the wine cellar which dated back hundreds of years and was so amazing to see! We bought a couple of bottles and Mario assured us him and Giovanni could ship the bottles home to us. Then Mario took us to Costanti. the woman who gave us the tour ( I forgot her name but she was lovely) also did the tasting and the wine was great. We bought another couple of bottles. Mario took some great photos for us in front of the vineyards and Montalcino town. He was a great guide and so knowledgeable about the town because he grew up there. This made the experience very personal which was great! Then he took us to lunch at Locanda Demtra which is owned by Gio and his brother. Wow. As soon as you walk in he kitchen and grounds they smell amazing and they cooked us a fantastic authentic local dish served with great wine overlooking the Tuscan hills. This place also offers cooking classes which unfortunately were booked but the people we met highly recommended them! Our last stop was the smallest winery but to me the most special because of Gemma- one of the owners. She runs it with her father and does everything from harvesting the grapes, to labeling the bottles and running the marketing. She took us through the vineyards and told us her father hand picks every grape for each harvest. Then we went inside for a tasting. At the end of the tasting she offered us her family batch of Vin Santo which made us feel so special and as if she was welcoming us into her home. We bought a few more bottles and our tour came to an end. Mario was so accommodating. He even stopped at a convenience store so my husband could buy some Advil. We left our bottles with Mario to ship home to us. Before dropping us off he recommended one of his favorite local restaurants Il Pozzo and helped us make a reservation. Then gave us his cell phone number in case we needed recommendations the rest of the trip. We ended up texting Mario the next day when we went to Pienza and he recommended a great farm for lunch that also has a cheese factory! Mario truly was a great tour guide from start to finish and we hope to return in the future to do another tour with him! Two days after we arrived home from Italy our wine arrived safe and sound in the US! Truly 5 star service!! This is a must do for your next Italy vacation! Thanks Giovanni and Mario!!!!

We hired this company for a transfer from Milan to Tuscany and a tour of the Modena and Parma on the way. Originally we were planning on a wine tour in Montalcino with them, but we ran out of time. Unfortunately our plane from the US was several hours late, but we found Giovanni easily at the airport. He had booked a tour of a cheese farm that we also missed sadly. He got us to Modena in time for lunch and a tour around town. He also stopped by a modena balsamic vinegar facility spontaneously, and we were able to get a private tour and pick up our first Italy souvenirs. He drove us to our hotel in Greve and gave us all sorts of Italy info on the way. He is very likeable and easy to talk to on long trips. He is an outdoor enthusiast and I’m sure we be great on an outdoor adventure. If you want a tour of the famous Brunello wineries, I’m confident this would be the group to do it with. They were all from the area and well connected.

By the end of our trip, we didn’t consider Mario a tour guide, but a good friend, and one that we knew we would be back to visit. His tours are so customized and personal, you feel like you are getting the true insiders view of Tuscany. His family has lived in the region for generations- he speaks about his home with pure contagious compassion. I will never forget the day he dropped us off for our next destination and how sad we were to part ways- we wish we could have had his guidance and company for the entire trip! Horseback Riding in Napa Valley

by CDV Staff | May 10, 2023 | Local Activity Guide , Our Blog

riding wine tour

Napa Valley is not short on beautiful vistas. Between expansive vineyards stretching into the horizon and meandering hiking trails , and world-class golf courses , there are many ways to enjoy the nature scape.

What if we told you that many of the best views of Napa Valley can be enjoyed via horseback riding?

Horseback riding is the hidden gem guaranteed to put the cherry on top of your Napa Valley wine experience. Whether you’re looking for horseback riding lessons, all-inclusive packages with wine tastings , or you’re on the hunt for the best glimpse at wine country, there’s no shortage of exceptional horseback riding opportunities.

In this list, we’ve done the work of coming up with the best horseback riding companies in Napa Valley. So when you stay at Chateau de Vie , you’ll be uniquely positioned to access some of the best glimpses of California’s wine country, all without having to step off your faithful horse.

Tour Shadybrook Estate

  • Address: 100 Rapp Lane, Napa
  • Notable features: Estate wine tour followed by wine tasting and charcuterie

When it comes to horseback riding in Napa Valley, touring the Shadybrook Estate Winery is one of the can’t-miss opportunities.

Located on the historic Rapp Ranch property, guests can choose between either a 30-minute or 50-minute trail ride hosted by the Napa Valley Trail Rides company. Through the tour, you’ll be supported by an experienced trail guide who will provide insight into the history of the estate.

This estate also offers a romantic 2.5-hour private horseback ride around the Estate vineyard. Following the ride, you’ll have a chance to meet the winemaker and have private access to a sample from one of their upcoming vintages. A romantic setting high above the cellar overlooking the vineyard from our winemaker’s overlook is the perfect spot for a private tasting paired with a variety of cheese and charcuteries.

Then, at the conclusion of the ride, you’ll be rewarded with an afternoon of wine tasting and charcuterie as you overlook the vistas of Rapp Ranch and the surrounding Coombsville hills. The view alone is reason enough to book your ride.

Sonoma Valley Trail Rides

  • Address: 1340 Napa Rd, Sonoma
  • Notable features: Vineyard and estate vineyard tours, horseback riding lessons

Sonoma Valley Trail Rides is a horseback riding company that offers two experiences to choose from. First, guests can either tour a vineyard or an estate vineyard, the latter of which includes a bottle of wine at the end of the day. Then, along with expert staff, you’ll be guided using seasoned, friendly horses up and down the rolling hills of the beautiful Sonoma Valley.

This experience is accessible regardless of your skill level, so don’t think that will get in the way of you and this truly epic adventure. If you’re keen on mastering the experience, you can even take dedicated horseback riding lessons.

Valley Brook Equestrian Center

  • Address: 1132 El Centro Ave #1949, Napa
  • Notable features: Individual or group lessons

Valley Brook is a popular spot for those of us looking for a more one-on-one horseback riding experience as opposed to a winery tour. Rather than exploring the vineyards, you’ll be instructed by expert staff on how to ride a horse properly. This foundational knowledge makes Valley Brook a popular destination for first-time riders eager to have a comprehensive horse-riding experience.

The Valley Brook Equestrian Center offers both individual and group lessons, so there’s no need to ditch your crew in order to enjoy a day of horse riding. Then, when you’re done, you’ll be less than a 10-minute drive from downtown Napa.

Triple Creek Horse Outfit

  • Address: 2400 London Ranch Rd, Glen Ellen
  • Notable features: Private tours outside of town.

If you’re less concerned with touring the vineyards of Napa and more looking forward to breathing the fresh air of the rolling hillsides, then Triple Creek Horse Outfit is for you. It’s about a 40-minute drive from downtown Napa which puts you just far enough away from the crowds so you can get a truly intimate experience.

Guests can choose between a one-hour to two-hour private ride, with options for large groups as well. You’ll begin the tour through the Jack London State Park on Sonoma Mountain. Then, you’ll be offered a complimentary wine tasting of the nearby VJB Cellars Estate to reward you for your efforts.

Tulucay Farm Stables

  • Address: 5310 Biava Ln, Napa
  • Notable features: Private and semi-private lessons

Just a short drive from downtown Napa off of Silverado Trail is Tulucay Farm Stables . This small, family-owned operation is run entirely by expert trainers. It is a perfect spot to brush up on your horseback riding skills, take a lesson if it’s your first time, or enjoy a small private lesson with your friends.

Tulucay offers private and semi-private classes, which can extend from 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on how long you want to savor the experience. This is an excellent option for kids and adults alike looking to get hands-on attention and learn how to become competent horse riders.

Plan a Day of Horseback Riding in Napa Valley

Now that we’ve gone over the best spots to experience a true Napa Valley horseback riding experience, it’s safe to say there’s a lot more to Napa than just wine tasting. Though don’t get us wrong, there’s nothing more rewarding after a long day of horse riding than ending with a nice chilled glass of Napa Valley wine.

Before you book your horseback riding experience, book your accommodations at Chateau de Vie .

When you book your stay with us, you’ll get a first-class experience with luxury treatment and amenities. We don’t care how dirty your riding boots are! You can consider us your home away from home, the place to hang your hat and relax after a long, hard day of wine tasting, horseback riding, and experiencing all that Napa Valley wine country has to offer.

Indulge Two Passions…

Join us at Foxfire Farm for a very unique experience. We begin with a guided, 45-minute horseback ride through our regenerative farm. Come enjoy nature and the company of our wonderful horses. Upon finishing our ride, we head next door to Janemark Winery for a tasting of some phenomenal local wines. Price includes ticket for wine tasting at Janemark Winery .

Willamette coast ride.

riding wine tour

Photo Journey:

riding wine tour

Enjoy all Oregon has to offer by horseback, complete with wine tastings and beach riding. During this riding tour in the Pacific Northwest you will stay in comfortable inns starting in the burgeoning wine country of Willamette Valley, and continue through the Coastal Range mountains to end on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. This is a point-to-point ride that has both adventure and luxury with wine tastings and riding through vineyards, ascending forested mountain trails, and galloping on the beach! The hosts and their horses provide a unique European feel while still maintaining the west coast sense of adventure.

Accommodations

Accommodation is in small bed & breakfasts or private condos or rental homes, all with generous hospitality and a great feel for the Pacific Northwest.

Meals & Drink

Breakfast at the accommodations, picnic lunches and three dinners are included. All meals are farm-fresh and local, including seafood on the coast. Two wine tastings are also included, depending on interest.

Ride & Horse Details

Equipment required:, horse breeds:, weight limit:, activities for non - riders.

Non-riders can independently schedule wine tours, fishing, cycling, shopping, hiking or spa session, joining riders for morning and evening meals.

Meeting Point

The trip begins in McMinnville and ends in Neskowin, Oregon. Transfers from Portland are an additional cost.

Trip Itinerary

Arrive in McMinnville in time for a 7:30pm meeting with your hosts. Spend the night at a bed & breakfast, in the prime wine country of the Willamette Valley. The nearest airport is Portland (PDX), about an hour and a half away. You can rent a car from there or we can give you suggestions for transfers. Dinner not included in trip price, can be location of your choice.

After breakfast at the B&B, meet at your hosts’ farm in Carlton at 10am (drive yourself in a rental car or use a transfer service). Your first ride allows you to view Kendall Jackson and Lois Jadot vineyards as you get to know your horse. After lunch in your hosts’ farmhouse ride through the rolling vineyard land to end at Carlton Hill Vineyard and end your day with a tasting. Stay another night at the B&B, enjoying dinner with the riders tonight.

After being picked up at accommodations drive further west into the Coastal Range mountains, ride the lush wooded trails in this temperate rainforest in the Pacific Northwest. Stay tonight in a beach view house, enjoy the beach sunsets, walking on the beach and hearing the surf while you sleep in the quaint coastal village of Neskowin. Dinner will be an informal pizza, pasta and salad dinner in your beach house.

Start the day with a warmup ride through an old Dairy Farmland and then hack through the village of Neskowin. Ride on the beach by the dramatic and picturesque rock formations. You may see the ancient ghost forest of Neskowin, then make your way down the lengthy, seven-mile beach and some trails on the high tide line shore pines as well. Dinner tonight is on your own, we suggest Cafe on Hawk Creek or the Beach Club Bistr.

Leave your condo at 11am to ride in local state park which has wonderful trails on a sand spit beach and also along the Nestucca River. Climbing up the beautiful sand dunes allows for rewarding sights of the pacific. Picnic at a site with tables and bathroom facilities before continuing on to Neskowin. Farewell dinner tonight all together.

Check out by 11am and make way back to Portland or PDX via pre-arranged not included transport.

The Willamette Coast ride was the best ride I have ever been on.  The guides were amazing in every way, the scenery was fabulous, great food, but most important were the fun riders from all over and the excellent horses.

Writing Horseback

Horseback Riding in Napa with Wine Tasting

With 3.85 million tourists visiting Napa Valley each year, Napa has wine tasting down to a science. There are over 500 wineries in the Napa Valley, however, what you might NOT know is that horses helped build its wine legacy . Dating back to the 1840s, horses were the primary form of transport for Napa residents building their vineyards.

So naturally, horseback riding in Napa is one of the most authentic experiences to have. Besides, what’s more relaxing than a trail ride followed by a wine tasting? Here are some of my recommendations for ranch and horseback riding in Napa experiences.

In order to go horseback riding or wine tasting, guests drive out to Combsville, a relatively new American Viticultural Area (AVA) just east of downtown Napa. Coombsville is the place to go to find the real, authentic Napa. It’s where you’ll learn how to do Napa like a local .

Horseback riding in Shadybrook Estate

Quarter cross horse, Silverado, looks out to Rapp Ranch and green vineyards of the Napa, California property.

There are plenty of options on how to spend your time at Shadybrook Estate, a historic ranch and vineyard site deep in the Napa valley . If you are not into wine tasting, join a 30 minute or 50 minute trail ride around the 25 acre property. Known as Rapp Ranch , home to cutting horses, the winery and stables are now owned by the Alison and David Alkosser family.

During my time here I opted for the Ultimate Ranch Experience. This consisted of a 50 minute Napa Valley trail ride and wine tasting. The ride is designed for beginners or equestrians with little riding experience. Once checked in at the barn, guests sign a waiver, grab a helmet and follow the wrangler to the outdoor arena (weather permitting.) If weather is inclement Rapp Ranch has an indoor riding arena and guests may opt for a riding lesson.

Headed back to the barn. Photo © Nancy D. Brown “We want you to feel like you are stepping back in time and experiencing our Napa,” said Rachel Strum of Shadybrook Estate Winery. “Napa has become a storm; a hurricane of people being pushed through tastings. We want to be the eye of that storm. The peace. To bring back the true art of winemaking and hospitality.”

Horseback riding at vineyard trail ride

On my visit, trail rides went out twice daily. I selected the first ride of the morning as there is a better chance to spot wildlife such as deer and rabbits. Rides are walking only and range from 1-8 riders, in addition to the trail guide. My wrangler shared her knowledge of the Coombsville area, the horses and some history about the estate winery.

What better experience to ride beside the vineyards and then sit and taste the wines. Afterall, Napa history dates back to the 1840’s where the horse played a significant role in the wine industry. You might even say the vineyards were built on the backs of horses.

Equine travel blogger Nancy D. Brown sits in a western saddle on top of Silverado, a Quarter cross Arabian horse, surrounded by vineyards in Napa, California at Shadybrook Estate Winery.

Shadybrook Estate wine tasting

After our vineyard trail ride I strolled over to the patio garden lounge overlooking Rapp Ranch Vineyards . My Ultimate Ranch Experience included 4 wines, as well as an assortment of cheese, charcuterie, fruit and nuts. My knowledgeable host explained that the Coombsville AVA is about 10 degrees cooler than the surrounding area, resulting in even wine grape ripening. To my surprise, this appellation is one of the last to harvest in Napa Valley.

I was impressed with the Shadybrook Cabernet Sauvignon and their lovely Pinot Noir. The wines are more complex than Rapp Ranch, their secondary label, and pair well with food. The estate holds an anniversary dinner every May for winery members and a Fall wine release party each October.

From my wine tasting experience and the looks of their Instagram account, these folks know a thing or two about wine country entertaining!

Need to know:

Riders must be at least 12 years of ages for vineyard trail rides. Guests must be 21 years of age and older to participate in wine tasting activities. No dogs are allowed  on the property. It is recommended that guests participating in horseback riding wear long pants and closed-toed shoes. Cowboy boots are available for rent and all riders are required to wear an equine-approved riding helmet that will be supplied for your trail ride.

Insider Tips:

Thinking about getting engaged or looking for a romantic location in Napa wine country? Let Napa Valley Trail Rides in on your celebration and they’ll arrange the Ultimate Romance package for you at the winemaker’s overlook aka the Proposal Spot. You’ll ride right by this garden with a wooden bench and a view of the vineyards and Coombsville foothills. FYI, wine tasting takes place after your horseback ride for an additional fee. No drinking while riding.
