(Sri Lanka & Maldives 14 Itinerary/2week travel guide)
In this post, I will outline my DIY travel guide to two weeks in both Sri Lanka & the Maldives! Two Contrasting places which should be on your bucket list! You can tailor this trip to suit your needs and even do two weeks or more in each destination.
Sri Lanka: One Week Itinerary
Best time to visit sri lanka.
Sri Lanka has a tropical asian climate, so is warm at any time throughout the year. However, they do have monsoons which are active during different times of the year & on different parts of the island.
The best time to visit Sri Lankas is between December & Feb/March. This is the best time if you plan on visiting the west coast or south west of Sri Lanka.
The best time to visit the east coast is between April-September.
Hot-Air-Balloon-Tour-Sri-Lanka (Sri Lanka & Maldives 14 Itinerary/2week travel guide)
Which airport do I fly into?
Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake , is the main International Airport in Sri Lanka. This airport is located 30km to the north of Sri Lankas Capital city, Colombo.
(Airport code CMB)
Do i need a Visa to travel to Sri Lanka?
Yes, you will need a visa to travel to Sri Lanka. I suggest registering online then simply collecting it from the airport when you arrive in Sri Lanka. Its quite a simple process just fill out the form online and pay the fee of $35 USD. Then they will send you a notification email to tell you if you have been approved.
I got my approval by the next morning, but i suggest you do this a couple weeks in advance to be on the safe side.
Sri Lanka one week Itinerary:
- Kandy Nuwara Eliya
Looping round to finish back in Colombo.
Day 1: Colombo
Getting from sri lanka airport (bandaranaike) to colombo.
Bandaranaike Airport to Colombo is 30km away with taxis and express buses running regularly. This can cost you anywhere from $0.70 to $20 depending upon you mode of transport and will take approximately 30-45 mins.
Taxi - The Taxis have air conditioning and cost between $15-$20 USD. (2600LKR-3600)
Bus - The Bus is definitely the most cost effective at just $0.70 (125LKR& surprisingly comfortable option as it has AC. To catch it, head just across from the terminal and catch bus number 187-E3
Colombo-SRi Lanka-one week itinerary
Colombo is an often overlooked city of which many people tend to pass through but to be honest there is so many great local sights & temples to see! As alot of the attractions/temples are spread out you will have to hop on one of the many Tuk Tuks especially if your here for just one day.
It can get pretty hot during the morning, so i suggest doing your main sightseeing during the afternoon. Like any major tourist city, be aware of scammers offering to "show you the way".
Attractions to see:
Gangaramaya temple & beira lake.
Gangaramaya Temple is a fantastic buddhist temple, with a unique architecture & everything from a gigantic buddha in the centre to one of the smallest buddha statues in the world.
Insider Tip:
Make sure you have spare change for the entrance fee which is 200 LKR, approx $1 USD)
Seema Malaka Temple
Located nearby to Gangaramaya temple is the golden buddha cladded Seema Malaka temple! Located over Beira Lake the temple is split into three platforms connected by small bridges.
Afterwards but sure to take a moment to admire the stunning Beira Lake.
Day 2: Dambulla & Safari at Minneriya National Park
Including the iconic Dambulla & a Safari in Minneriya National Park in just one day can be a real challenge!
There is 100km (60 miles) between colombo at Habarana so this was definitely my busiest day with lots of traveling. So if you have time do it over two days! Having said that, it stills possible to do in one day, just make sure you leave Colombo early.
On the way to Habarana, you have to stop at Dambulla Cave temple! A UNESCO word heritage site featuring a maze of fresco covered caves, the largest & most well preserved in Sri Lanka!
Also called the golden temple of Dambulla, the temples contain 153 buddha statues, in addition to Sri Lankan kings, gods & goddesses! There is a massive 80 caves in the area, but the 3 main ones include:
Cave of the Divine King
Highlights include at massive 14-meter statue of the Buddha!
Cave of the Great Kings
Like something form Indiana Jones, this is the largest Cave and a magical place featuring statues of gods and of course kings! The cave measures 52m from east to west, and 23m from the entrance to the back.
Great New Monastery
This has some amazing ceiling and wall paintings in the Kandy style .
Safari at Minneriya National Park
After immersing yourself in the caves head back out to daylight, to Minneriya National Park near Habaran city. At Minneriya you can enjoy an amazing Safari.
Minneriya National Park, was originally declared a wildlife sanctuary back in 1938 and you can see why! With seasonal groups of elephants and large flocks of tropical birds.
wiki[/caption]
The main elephant gathering occurs between September & October when over 350 elephants flock to the dried out Minneriya lake. The area is around 5 & half hours from Columbo . Close by you can find the ruined monasteries and royal palaces of Polonnaruwa!
You can also visit Kadulla National Park nearby, sometimes the Elephants migrate over from Minneriya National Park. So ask you guide which would be better when you visit.
Where to Stay?

Day 3: Hike up Sigirya Rock
Sigirya is rock is the most iconic rock formation in Sri Lanka! At over 1300ft high (400m), this offers incredible panoramic views from the top!
To get to the top, you will have to take the stairs! In total, there are 1,200 steps to Lion Fortress, which is the highest viewpoint on Sigiriya rock. Although, you need to be reasonably fit, there are many platforms along the way where you can take breaks & drink water! The views at the top are spectacularly worth it!
Sigiriya, Dambulla Mountain , Sri Lanka is awe inspiring.
Historical Significance:
Sigirya was chosen by King Kasyapa who reigned between (477 – 495 CE) to be the new capital of Sri Lanka. The king built his palace atop of the 400m rock which gates in the shape of a lion! Hence the name Lion Fortress. When the king died the palace was completely deserted.
Head to Sigirya rock early in the morning, before the mid day sun cooks you and the tourist groups descend on the area, as it has become popular in recent years.
Other Tips:
Bring Water & snacks on your journey & the hike!
If you have a few extra days head to Pidurangala Rock, which offering breath taking views of Sigiriya rock. You can also stay somewhere local, before heading to Kandy.
Day 4: Kandy
Kandy is Sri Lankas cultural hub and a must visit city for any length of trip to Sri Lanka, it's also on the UNESCO list.
Temples of Sacred Tooth Relic
A popular attraction here is the Sacred Tooth Relic temple, this is one of the most spiritual places in Sri Lanka and legend says it contains a tooth relic from the Buddha.
Independent guides offer tours around the entire temple for around Rs 600 ($3). Free audio guides are also available from the ticket office.
If you time your trip correctly, you may get to experience one of the exciting fire shows which take place nearby, lots of times per week.
Royal Botanical Gardens
The Royal Botanical Gardens are truly awe inspiring! Located in Peradeniya, just 5km from Kandy, the Royal gardens are bucket list place for those who love all things nature! With over 147 acres of lush greenery & colorful flowers there is plenty to explore! The main highlights include the orchid house and the suspension bridge.
Kandy is the perfect place to go Souvenir shopping, with plenty of unique gifts and natural health & beauty products on offer.
Day 5: Kandy to Nuwara Eliya by Train!
The wind in your hair, the scenic views and the noises of history, train Journeys around Sri Lanka, offer a scenic & ever so romantic way of seeing the country! That is why I suggest, taking one from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya!
This is part of the Kandy to Ella Train Journey which is known as the one of the most scenic in the world! You will see everything from tea plantations & banana trees to villages & waterfalls!
Ella-Sri-Lanka-Nine-arch-bridge- Couple. (Sri Lanka & Maldives 14 Itinerary/2week travel guide)[/caption]
Train Times:
Your best bet is to take a train from Peradeniya station , about 7 km from Kandy (take a tuk tuk or Bus) to Nanu Oya station approximately 8 km from Nuwara Eliya . 2 trains run daily , which depart Peradeniya at 08:40 and 12:23.
2nd or 1st Class?
The main difference here being AC, to be honest I was in 2nd class and it was fine due to the many open windows. Also, considering Nuwara Eliya is mountainous and the Coldest city is Sri Lanka! The temperature was less than 20'C in august, either way the choice is yours
Which side of the Train should I sit?
Kandy - Nuwara Eliya , sit on the right side for most of the sights, and if coming back sit on the left side. (Left and right referenced to the forward direction of the train)
Bring some on train drinks & snacks as the journey is very long, they do sell some on the train but there is not much of a quality selection. As you approach large train stations, some sellers will offer you goods through the window!
Issues with the Train?
There have been many reports of the train getting really full and people being unable to get a ticket, especially during peak season, (up until march).
Faster Options include:
Tuk Tuk Journey - 2-3 hours
Bus - 2-3 hours
A Tuk Tuk Journey with a cool river/guide is perfect as you can stop when you see great sights, take photos and even stop for snacks! Definitely consider this an option, if your traveling during peak season.
Day 6: Neuwara Elliya
Neuwara Elliya means the "city of light" and is a Scenic hilly area covered with lush Tea Plantations. Popular attractions here include:
Pedro Tea Estate, Factory Tour
Pedro Tea Estate is located 3.5km east of Nuwara Eliya towards Kandapola. The 20 minute guided tour is interesting as you get to see machinery built in 1885, but I was disappointed not to see much tea brimming action in the factory.
It turns out here they make a lighter tea, in which processing only happens at night when its colder!
Watch out for leeches if your heading into the tea plantations! Eww!
Hakgala Gardens
Beautiful Gardens located 10km southeast of Nuwara Eliya. Popular sights include, the fine rose garden, the orchid selection and even a Japanese Garden! Be aware the entrance fee can be a little high.
Insider tip
Try to avoid the gardens between Jan-March as this is the planting season so the garden will not look as good as normal.
How to get to Hakgala Gardens?
To get to hakgala gardens, take a welimada-bound bus (rs 22) it takes 20 minutes., best viewpoint - lovers leap waterfall.
After heading to Pedro Tea Estate, take a fantastic walk 5km (round-trip) walk to Lovers Leap, a stunning waterfall.
Other highlights include: Seetha Amman Temple, and Lake Gregory
Day 7: Negombo beach
After trekking through Sri Lanka, its nice to relax on at least one Sri Lankan Beach before jetting off! Located just 15 km from the airport, Negombo Beach is a stunning retreat to relax & watch the sunset.
However, be aware that like lots of Sri Lanka the seas can sometimes be rough so don't expect tranquility much there...but if your a surfer its heaven!
negombo beach Sri Lanka
Insider tip:
Negombo is actually a great place to stay for at least 2-3 days and explore so if you have longer feel free.

Today the adventure begins and the sights and the sounds of Sri Lanka gradually unfold. The countryside is stunning – scenic paddy fields studded by water buffalos accompanied by wiry, loin-clothed farmers, extensive coconut groves, pineapple fields, working elephants with attentive mahouts astride their necks and everywhere the dense jungle interspersed by huge lakes. We visit the amazing, 1st century cave temples of Dambulla, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a wonderful introduction to the Buddhist religion. Set in an immense granite outcrop and reached by a number of steps, this serie of five caves are richly adorned with remarkably preserved frescoes and over 150 Buddhist statues. In the caves’ semi-darkness, surrounded by the serene faces of dozens of beautifully painted statues, it’s not difficult to imagine the incredible sense of awe this sacred site held for generations of worshippers. We stay two nights at the four-star Habarana Village Hotel by Cinnamon.
This morning you visit what for many will surely be the most memorable and fascinating monument in Sri Lanka: Sigiriya, or the ‘Lion Rock’, is a massive 600ft granite tower with sheer cliffs on all sides crowned by the remains of a 1,500 year old royal palace. The entire site is encircled by a moat and ramparts enclosing a variety of water gardens, the remains of numerous buildings and caves. As you approach Sigiriya rock, you see some of the finest ancient murals in the country – the ‘cloud maidens’ are found under a fold of rock and show in exquisite detail a procession of jewelled, beautifully dressed women bearing offerings of lilies and lotus flowers. Facing us is the imposing final entrance to the palace above: in ancient times the colossal head of a lion (hence ‘Lion Rock’) was built in brick and plaster, visitors entering through its mouth. Today, just the two front paws remain, their claws menacingly extended, still guarding the palace. It should be noted that there are numerous steps to the top of Sigiriya rock, but should pose no problem for those with normal mobility. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure to enjoy our hotel’s pool and facilities.
This morning we leave Sigiriya for Kandy. Sri Lanka is noted for its magnificent spices so en route we visit a fascinating garden where we see many indigenous plants such as pepper, nutmeg and cinnamon before arriving at Kandy, the country’s royal capital. You stay two nights with dinner at the four-star Cinnamon Citadel Hotel, beautifully located overlooking the scenic Mahaweli River and surrounded by peaceful forested hillsides. The hotel as a pool overlooking the river, with a colonnaded lobby, a charming bar and restaurant. Kandy is famous for its traditional dancing and so this evening we experience a colourful and hugely skilful display of this ancient art.
Kandy’s crowded and bustling streets teem with daily comings and goings: the many white-uniformed children returning from school and the myriad of shops. The centre is dominated by a beautiful lake and the fascinating Temple of the Tooth, said to hold Buddha’s tooth. This is Buddhism’s most sacred shrine on the island and during our visit (today or tomorrow morning), you may be lucky enough to witness one of the many ceremonies. You also visit the stunning Royal Botanical Gardens. Planted over 150 years and covering a huge 150 acres, the gardens hold thousands of plant species and some superb examples of mature tropical trees. Strolling through lawns, shady avenues and immaculately kept flower beds, we see exotic birds and the commemorative trees planted by Edward VII, George VI, Princess Anne and the Queen. Other highlights are the Avenue of Royal Palms and ‘Bat’ Drive where you can spot the large fruit-eating ‘Flying Foxes’ hanging upside down! The gardens also house Lord Mountbatten’s imposing HQ from World War II.
Today you leave Kandy and the train from Peradeniya Station to Nanu Oya, Nuwara Eliya. We journey through increasingly mountainous scenery including some spectacular views of Sri Lanka’s premier tea growing areas. Lush tropical jungle gives way to tall pine forests and then box-like tea bushes, few at first and then seemingly covering every fold of the landscape like a huge green carpet right to the landscape horizon. Arriving early afternoon to Nuwara Eliya, the main hill station, is nearly 7,000 feet above sea level and called ‘little England’ due to its spring-like climate, parks and gold course. You stay one-night at the four-star Golden Ridge Hotel, located within a 5 acre ridge.
You say goodbye to Sri Lanka’s hill country this morning on your way to Yala National Park in the south of Sri Lanka. At around midday we arrive at the Elephant Transit Home, supported by the UK’s Born Free Foundation, at Udawalawe National Park, where you’ll be able to watch young elephant orphans being given one of their daily feeds. You stay two nights at the excellent three-star superior Chaarya Resort and Spa Hotel, near Tissamaharama.
An early start this morning, accompanied by the unique sound of a tropical ‘dawn chorus’. As the morning mist disappears with the rising sun you explore the jungle and its incredible range of wildlife in 4x4 vehicles. The normally elusive leopard offers the Park’s most exciting game viewing and Yala has a high concentration of these big cats. They are the island’s top predator so are far less shy than elsewhere in the world. Yala is also known for its elephants, saltwater crocodiles, wild boar, sloth bears, monitor lizards and a huge variety of birdlife. After a late breakfast you can relax by the hotel’s pool before an optional second, early evening park drive (book and pay local).
Today we journey to Colombo, stopping at the UNESCO World Heritage site of Galle, with its imposing 16th century Dutch fort. In the late afternoon we arrive at the four-star superior Kingsbury Colombo for one night.
Transfer from your hotel to Colombo airport for the 1hr.25 flight to the Maldivian capital Malé with a short domestic flight to Maamagili Regional Airport in South Ari Atoll. On arrival you’ll be taken by dhoni (traditional Maldivian wooden boat) to the Yasawa Princess, your charming cosy home for the week, where the friendly crew will help you check into your comfortable cabin. During this evening’s informal welcome meeting, you’ll be briefed on week’s itinerary, meet crew members and the other guests on board. Enjoy your complimentary pre-dinner cocktail as you catch the first of many spectacular sunsets over the Indian Ocean.
Get your first taste of cruising as we take a short cruise north west to Hurasdhoo, a small deserted island with a white sandy beach. Take the opportunity for snorkelling to experience your first taste of the underwater world or relax and soaking up the sun and cooling off with a dip in the Indian Ocean. The ship’s tender makes trips to this beautiful island in the morning and afternoon. For a small additional charge payable locally, you may wish to take a boat out with local guides and go in search of the graceful giant manta ray visiting a manta ray cleaning station with the option to snorkel (seasonal January to April). Tonight, you may wish to experience reef night fishing with traditional hand line bottom fishing technique (catch and release method).
A short cruise to the western edge of the atoll we moor up near the small charming deserted island of Embudu. The tender takes you to the island in the morning and afternoon. Access to snorkelling is with ease, with a bit of luck you may find local residents Eagle rays or turtles passing by or simply relax on the long stretch of beach. You really are in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Tonight, why not try your hand at traditional fishing in the open ocean under the stars? Maldivians are true fishermen at heart, so you’re in good hands with our local guides.
After a leisurely cruise this morning, we arrive at the island of Raiydhigaa with a natural habour. With soft white sands, lush coconut trees and astonishingly clear water, this remarkably picturesque island appears to have sprung to life from the cover of a travel magazine! There is easy access to the reef for snorkelling. Lunch today is a picnic on the island. For many, this evening will be a real highlight. Few experiences can compare with a meticulously prepared barbecue on the beach, served with warm Maldivian hospitality. Enjoy a wide selection of delicious food including music and dancing under a starlit sky, a truly memorable experience.
Located in the centre of Ari Atoll is Alikoi Rah sandbank, a snorkellers haven with a house reef abundant to spot colourful fish, turtles and rays, visiting in the morning and afternoon. This evening we watch the sky take on an array of magical shades of orange as we take a sunset cruise to the nearby Maaya sandbank.
Heading to the northern edge of Ari atoll, visited in the morning and afternoon is the large sandbar of Maayafushi is renowned for flocks of common seabirds. A wonderful sandbar with a stunning sea-green lagoon and a surrounding reef, making snorkelling an absolute dream.
This morning we cross the open Ocean channel of Alihuras Kandu cooling off with a final dip in the warm ocean clear waters on a sandbar en route to Male. Once reaching our final mooring, our dhoni is ready to take you on an informal guided tour to the world’s smallest capital city. With an area of approximately 2.3 square miles and a population of over 150,000, Malé is a fascinating commercial hub of the country. See the bustle and buzz of everyday life including local markets, whilst wondering around. Enjoy locals favourite pastime of having an ice cream or coffee or simply watch the world go by from one of various cafés in the area of Boduthakurufaanu Magu.

Day 3 : Dambulla
Location: dambulla, habarana, accommodation name: habarana village hotel, meals included: breakfast, dinner.
Day 4 : Sigiriya Rock
Location: sigiriya.
Day 5 : Kandy
Location: kandy, accommodation name: cinnamon citadel hotel.
Day 6 : Kandy
Day 7 : Train Nuwara Eliya
Location: nuwara eliya, accommodation name: golden ridge.

Should you also wish to give a gratuity directly to your Riviera Travel Cruise Director and Concierge, this is also at your discretion.
Useful Information
Dietary requirements.
We cater for most dietary requirements; please ensure you contact the reservations team when making your booking.
Disabled Facilities
Our ships are not adapted for wheelchair access; if you are intending to take a wheelchair with you please contact us.Due to popularity of river cruising when there is more than one ship in port the ships could be moored alongside each other. If our ship happens to be moored away from the landing pier disembarking could involve walking across gang planks and the sun deck of other ships.River cruises operate with a smaller crew than ocean cruises and do not have the crew available to personally attend to passengers with reduced mobility therefore a travelling companion would need to be able to help with any physical needs. The itinerary we include with our river cruises involves shore excursions visiting places with cobbled streets which can be on an incline making navigation of these streets difficult for anyone with reduced mobility.Cruising down the Rhine, Danube or any of the European rivers we offer gives you the opportunity to take in the spectacular scenery and there is a lot to enjoy from the comfort of the ship. If you can’t do many shore excursions, river cruising in Europe can still be very enjoyable and worthwhile, please contact us with any concerns you may have.
There is no requirement to bring formal dress; smart/casual is acceptable for both day and evening as there is no dress code enforced. However men are requested not to wear shorts for dinner or vest tops at any time in the dining room. Men may wish to wear a jacket and tie for dinner. The Captain’s Dinner offers the opportunity, should you wish, for more special attire.
Laundry Service
A limited laundry service is available on board, except on the day of disembarkation. A dry cleaning service is not available.
Medical Facilities
If you have any concerns about your health whilst on tour, please see your Cruise Director or Concierge. They will be able to advise you about chemists and availability of doctors, etc. In an emergency you could always phone our emergency number as issued on your itinerary. There are no on-board medical personnel, although specific crew members will have basic first aid training. However, the ship can stop at any time to transfer any passenger requiring emergency medical attention to local medical facilities.
Smoking and E-Cigarette Policy
Smoking, including e-cigarettes, is not permitted anywhere on board except for designated areas on the sun deck.More and more countries in Europe are adopting a stricter legislation on smoking in public places. Smoking is not allowed on any public transport and there may be other restrictions in hotels, bars and restaurants.

Reviews of this operator
This review is for the....
This review is for the italian Lake Como trip Aug 1-8 Wow what a trip. Riviera from start to finish were excellent the booking and help line answering questions were very good and clear. The travel booklet you get is laid out that it is simple to read and follow with step by step info from booking in to flights to meeting the guides. Our guide Matt Purse was just the best guide and real credit to Riviera with his knowledge and straight forward approach to running the trips. Matt kept us informed and told us all the sort of info you want to know without going over the top....This chap should teach other reps ..thank you so much. The coaches they use are all clean and well equipped with usb chargers and have aircon. The places chosen to visit were well researched even down to where coaches park or drop you off. The Bernina Express was the highlight for our family and matts photo tip was welcomed. The only down point was the hotel,a little dated and evening meal in main restuarant was a bit of a let down. I think we were lucky with our room on level 7 and with balcony as the walls are very thin and noise travels. We would book again with riviera
I have been on three...
I have been on three trips with Riviera Travel so far, with two more booked during 2024. Highly recommended. Excellent tour guides. Great program of visits. Great hotels used.
Thankyou Riviera and all the...
Thankyou Riviera and all the staff on the William Wordsworth Danube River cruise. My husband and i have just travelled on the Danube to celebrate my husbands 60th and we had such a lovely experience. We were younger than most of the travellers but we met so many lovely people so this wasnt a problem. The staff were so lovely and professional. The service we experienced was so high. The boat was beautiful, the food amazing and the excursions were informative and well managed. I would definately recommend riviera as a company. In fact we are now considering their Japan holiday.
We would go again in a heartbeat
Oh my goodness, what a relief it was to actually get away! Full marks to all at Riviera for keeping us up to date before our trip and for the help so cheerfully and patiently given with the extra admin that Covid brought our way. We felt totally safe with the measures taken on board, thank you very much for this. Without exception, Staff were fantastic and our every need was attended to. The additional Covid testing ran smoothly, organised by our Riviera Reps. The guided tours were most interesting: the guides very knowledgeable and more importantly, interesting to listen to. We loved this trip and would do it again in a heartbeat. Thank you again Riviera, you were FAB!
Second escorted tour with this...
Second escorted tour with this company. Did 5 days in Iceland tour. Everything went smoothly, excellent tour guide, Per. Extremely knowledgeable and interesting guy. Very friendly too. Highly recommend. Just let down by the room given at the hotel, but I guess the travel company doesn't have control over this.
Riviera South Africa tour - awesome
Riviera have amazing holidays and tours to choose from. The one we chose was South Africa and wow! It turned out to be our best trip ever - incredible memories we will never forget. We’ve been all over the world which was because of all our experiences, this one was awesome. The organisation of the holiday, the guide and the travel was e cells that. The choice of hotels, meals, restaurants, trips was absolutely fantastic - very good quality and character - nothing bland or boring! The Riviera guide was permanently with us along with a South Africa guide and they were both extremely friendly, professional, informative and you could ask any questions you want! I would massively recommend this holiday/trip and when you’ve experienced it, you realise how reasonable the price is. We reflect on this trip a lot and thank you Riviera for giving us such a wonderful experience.
Rhine Christmas markets cruise
Just completed a 5 day trip on the Rhine. Our first river cruise and a tester for future cruises. The boat was well appointed and the cabin and public areas were spotlessly clean. The staff were attentive and contributed to the very relaxed atmosphere on the boat. The quality of the food surpassed that which we have experiened on sea cruises in recent years. I have written little because it was a faultless experience. We have booked a further cruise (in France) on the basis of our experience.
Although most people seem to...
Although most people seem to book and pay for their holidays online, because we live close by we prefer to make a personal visit. In my opinion if they are offering this as an option they should be better equipped to accommodate visits in person. We have not been on our river cruise yet, so can't comment on that yet.
My 3rd Riviera trip within...
My 3rd Riviera trip within a year and I wasn't disappointed 😁 This time it was https://www.rivieratravel.co.uk/escorted-tours/southern-india-coastal-route-solo-travellers This trip, although not cheap, it really offers exceptional value for money as you see a lot of Tamil Nadu and Kerela, stay in fantastic hotels, excellent breakfasts every day as well as some lunches and dinners also included. George Bareham, our "Tour Manager" was brilliant, very professional, but also friendly and diligent. Satheeshan, our local guide was helpful and picked me up antibiotics when I got ill, he was a nice chap, if (for my taste) went on a bit and used 20 words when 1 would suffice. Mr Sweeny, our coach driver was fantastic, really professional and an exceptionally good driver. His assistant, Murgon wad a delight, always smiling and attentive. This is a full on trip, early morning starts and quite a packed itinerary, but still leaving time to laze around some brilliant hotel swimming pools. Only a couple of suggestions to improve the holiday. More shopping time in Cochin and change carriers from Etihad who, unfortunately aren't the excellent airline they used to be. But, will I use Riviera Travel again - Yes 😁
Presently in Croatia staying at...
Presently in Croatia staying at Arauana Hotel, supposedly a 4 star property, but wouldn't give it any star rating. Rooms are small and dirty. Wallpaper blistering. Meals served in a shed like lean-to. Food like warm, greasy and always self service. Second holiday with Riviera this year and neither at standard advertised. Have travelled with them previously and everything was fine, but standards have really dropped. Have booked a holiday with them next year and now dreading it. Certainly don't provide the standard advertised. We have never stayed in such a hovel and have visited youngsters in back packers accommodation which was far better than this supposedly 4 star accommodation. There are no indoor bars or lounges only a shed as a so called restaurant. Absolutely disgusting. Won't be boking with them again

Day 1 Home Colombo
Welcome to Sri Lanka!
On arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), you will be met by your private transfer and driven to your accommodation in Colombo.
Due to airline flight schedules, some flights arrive very late in the evening. There is the opportunity to book pre tour accommodation in Colombo should you wish.
Check-in: if arriving prior to standard check-in time, which is generally 3pm local time, you are welcome to leave your luggage with hotel reception and explore your surroundings until check-in becomes available, as there are generally no scheduled activities on Day 1 of the itinerary.
Day 2 Colombo Galle
In the morning, we'll head south towards Galle, with a brief Colombo sightseeing tour on the way. Colombo offers a blend of modern western and Sri Lankan elements, we'll drive past some of the commercial capital's sites including Old Parliament, President’s House, Gangaramaya Temple, Galle Face Green, Pettah, Viharamaha Devi Park, and Independence Square.
There will be time for you to disembark the coach and be escorted through the famous Pettah Market, not before viewing the uniquely stunning Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque (entry not included).
We will also visit the Colombo National Museum. This charming museum takes visitors on a fascinating journey through Sri Lankan history. Housed in a stunning neo-Baroque building, which was specifically constructed by William Henry Gregory, Governor of Ceylon, in 1877, the museum boasts a gleaming white façade. As you make your way through the various rooms, you'll encounter exhibits dedicated to each of Sri Lanka's historical kingdoms. Informational display boards provide intriguing insights, such as the meaning behind the mudras (gestures and poses) depicted in Sri Lanka's Buddha statues.
Then, in Balapitiya, we take a boat trip on the Madu River to visit 64 scattered islands, including Cinnamon Island, where we learn about cinnamon production. Sri Lanka is the world's largest producer of pure cinnamon.
Spend tonight in Galle.
Day 3 Galle
Today set on a tour of the Galle Fort and its Fortifications. This is a city that exudes an essence with a perfect blend of past and present. Declared an UNESCO heritage site in 1988, the presence of Portuguese, Dutch and English is very evident in the fascinating architectural styles of the Galle Fort.
Day 4 Galle Yala National Park
In the morning we leave for Yala National Park. On arrival, spend your afternoon on a guided game drive exploring the dynamic wildlife and the most luxuriant plant life in Yala National Park. Being one of the largest parks in Sri Lanka, it is the ideal place to sight the rare leopard!
Please note that Yala National Park closes for a period between the months of September and October. The exact closure dates are made clear closer to the time. The closure is due to the prevailing dry weather prior to this time and taking into consideration the well-being of the wildlife in the reserve. For departure dates that fall over this period, as defined in the departure dates listed below, Yala National Park will be replaced with a visit to Udawalawe National Park, while still being able to visit Block 4 or 5 of Yala National Park.
Day 5 Yala National Park Nuwara Eliya
This morning, enjoy another safari in the Yala National Park by jeep to spot the diverse wildlife which calls the park home.
Please note: sections of Yala National Park close due to conservation efforts each year between September and October. The closure dates are advised by the Sri Lankan government 1-2 months prior and differ each year. As Yala National Park is made up of multiple sections, if one section is closed due to conservation works we will visit one of the open sections.
After, we leave Yala behind us and continue the journey to Nuwara Eliya. Often referred to as ‘Little England’, this genteel highland community does have a rose-tinted, vaguely British-country-village feel to it, with its colonial-era bungalows.
On arrival, check in to your Inspiring Stay for the next two nights, the incredible Grand Hotel. It may be the 21st century, but colonial splendour still reigns in all its past glory at the Grand Hotel. Built in 1891, this was the palatial residence of the former Governor of Sri Lanka, Sir Edward Barnes; today we offer the ultimate in comfort and the best of traditions from the ‘good old days’ to all who seek the charms of our famed hill country landmark.
Please note: a smart casual dress code applies for dinner at all restaurants and bars. Guests in short trousers and sleeveless shirts and rubber slippers will not be permitted to enter the restaurants.
A closer look at your incredible accommodation, the Grand Hotel Nuwara Eliya: the incredible Grand Hotel in Nuwara Eliya, an enduring icon in this tranquil town perched on a mountain ridge overlooking lush green countryside in tea country. Oozing colonial charm, the hotel began life in the early 19th century as the stately holiday home of the fifth Governor of Ceylon. It’s since evolved over the centuries to retain a romantic, old-world ambience alongside modern comforts. In an enviable location, there are elegant, well-appointed rooms, magnificent gardens and an array of hotel amenities and activities including music therapy, yoga and more. The Grand Hotel is also renowned for its traditional afternoon tea, a quintessential British tradition which you’ll experience on this tour.
Day 6 Nuwara Eliya
Today you will have a leisurely morning.
In the afternoon you will visit a Tea Plantation and Factory. Here you will enjoy an absolute tea experience, taking you from the moment young tea leaves are plucked to being processed in the factory to make a steaming cup of tea. If you are interested, the tea factory is the best place to purchase high quality tea.
This afternoon, enjoy an Inspiring Taste at probably the most talked of outlet in Nuwara Eliya, the Grand Tea Lounge. Here we enjoy an iconic High Tea at the Grand Hotel.
At approximately 5:30am, leave for Horton Plains National Park. This park holds great importance due to the rich and unique biodiversity and being a catchment area feeding some of the main rivers of Sri Lanka. It is also known to be a 'super biodiversity hotspot' and thus declared a UNESCO site in 2010. The national park is most famous for the vista - World's End.
You will be accompanied by a private escort the entire duration of the hike - from the Horton Plains Park Park Office, to World's End (via Mini World's End) and back. Wear strong and comfortable walking shoes, a hat and sunglasses. Bring sunscreen, food and water. The weather can change very quickly on the plains – one minute it can be sunny and clear, the next chilly and misty. Bring a few extra layers of warm clothing.
Start time: 5:30am departure from hotel End time: 12:30pm return to hotel Distance: 7.5km round trip - 150m elevation gain Inclusions: return transfers, entrance into Horton Plains National Park, packed breakfast, private escort
There are no safety rails available so we recommend this activity for those who are physically fit and go on long walks often. We do not recommend this if you have a difficult time walking along uneven, potentially wet, and rocky terrain.
Day 7 Nuwara Eliya Kandy
This morning, board at Nanuoya Station for Kandy on a famous train journey, said to be one of the most scenic and beautiful in the world. Apart from the breathtaking sceneries of the tea country and picturesque waterfalls, it is a chance for you to mingle with local people.
Discover the rich history of Kandy, once known as Senkadagala, during its time as the Hill Capital from 1514-1815 AD. Named a UNESCO heritage site in 1988, Kandy boasts a beautiful lake, historic temples like the Temple of the Tooth Relic, and well-preserved ruins of the royal palaces.
Enjoy some free time upon arrival in Kandy during the afternoon.
Day 8 Kandy
Explore the beautiful city of Kandy with an included Tuk Tuk and Bazaar tour, followed by a delicious lunch at a local restaurant. Relax in the afternoon with a stroll around the picturesque Kandy Lake.
In the evening, visit the revered Temple of Tooth, home to a sacred relic of the Buddha and its guardian elephants.
End your day with a spectacular Sri Lankan Cultural Performance.
Day 9 Kandy Minneriya National Park Sigiriya
Today, continue north, deeper into the Cultural Triangle of Sri Lanka.
En route to Sigiriya, stop at a local spice garden. Sri Lanka has a very proud history of its spices, which have unique flavours, colours and aromas. During the 1500s, Portuguese, Dutch and British took these local spices to the world and thus, Sri Lanka became famous for such spices as cinnamon, black pepper, clove, cumin, cardamom, turmeric and ginger. These spices are continually used in homes throughout the world today.
Prior to heading to tonight's accommodation, enjoy a private jeep safari at Minneriya National Park. Located in the districts of Matale and Polonnaruwa and bordered by the 'Mahaweli' and 'Amban' rivers, this park stretches an impressive 36,948 hectares. It was declared a National park in 1984, making it the only one in the Central Province. It's a paradise for nature lovers and one of the best places to observe elephants.
Continue to Sigiriya for check-in.
Please note: Since elephants are migratory animals, we may visit Wasgamuwa National Park on this day instead, based on the elephant locations.
This evening enjoy an Inspiring Taste with some sundowner pre-dinner Arrack (a local cocktail) or something else to suit your tastes with some canapes.
Day 10 Sigiriya Sigiriya Rock Fortress Polonnaruwa Sigiriya
In the morning, we'll climb the Sigiriya Rock Fortress (also known as Lion's Rock) - an extraordinary artistic complex dating back to 477-498 AD. This UNESCO World Heritage Site has become a global attraction due to its unique architecture.
For lunch, participate in an Inspiring Taste cooking demonstration where you'll learn to prepare Sri Lankan rice and curry (5-6 curries). Savor your meal while overlooking the beautiful gardens.
In the afternoon, we'll take a sightseeing tour of Polonnaruwa, the medieval capital city of Sri Lanka (1017-1235 AD). Polonnaruwa was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 after the fall of Anuradhapura.
Enjoy a scenic and leisurely bicycle ride to Parakrama Samudra Reservoir before continuing to Polonnaruwa for a sightseeing bike tour. Pedal along ancient ruins and see Polonnaruwa from a different perspective.
The route is very flat and suitable for all levels of bicycle experience.
Approx duration: 3 hours
Day 11 Sigiriya
Spend the morning at your leisure, then in the afternoon, explore the impressive Dambulla Rock Cave Temple, also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla. This UNESCO heritage site dates back to the 3rd Century BC and boasts 157 statues and extraordinary paintings covering a vast 2100m2 area, making it the most impressive cave complex in Sri Lanka. It's truly a masterpiece worth experiencing.
Leave on foot or by bicycle and travel through Audangawa village. Visit the local temple and evoke blessings from the priest. Visit a villager’s house and enjoy a warm herbal drink or a king coconut. Wander through the village passing paddy fields and Chena cultivations.
Day 12 Sigiriya Colombo Male Kaafu Atoll
Today you will travel from Sri Lanka to The Maldives.
Departing from Sigiriya, you will arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) in time for your included flight to Malé, The Maldives.
On arrival into Malé, you will be met and transported to your included speedboat transfer which will take you the 40 minute journey to Kaafu Atoll where you will spend the next few nights in paradise.
Experience paradise in the Maldives, a breathtaking tropical nation located in the Indian Ocean, consisting of 26 vibrant coral atolls and hundreds of picturesque islands. With its pristine beaches, crystalline lagoons and abundant coral reefs, the Maldives is a true dream destination.

Fitness Requirements While the tour itinerary should give you some guidance and overview to the expected requirements, to determine if this tour is right for you we categorise each of our tours in terms of their intensity. These guidelines are to ensure that each tour group is conducted as expected and to ensure the overall satisfaction of all Inspiring Vacations customers.
As a general rule, porterage is not included, therefore at all times you are expected to handle your own luggage where help may not be available.
This particular tour is categorised as a “3”:
3 – Moderate Tour: A good level of fitness and mobility is required, as this tour includes a moderate level of physical activity and is considered a medium-fast paced tour. You should be able to walk up and down stairs, get on and off the coach and able to walk reasonable distances of approximately 2 kilometres per day or more with ease. Any physical ailments you may have must be disclosed at the time of booking to determine your suitability. Tipping A friendly reminder that tipping is not included in your package. At the commencement of your tour you will be asked to provide tipping to your guide towards a ‘kitty’, which is then used towards the guide tipping for the services of helpers, hotel staff, restaurants and airport porterage. You will be asked for AUD$35 per person. Please note that this tipping is not for the guide or driver, merely for the guide to tip the services of other local workers during your tour. While not made compulsory, if you choose not to contribute to the kitty it means that the guide is tipping for these services out of their own pocket. Your cooperation in this instance is most appreciated.
Further, tipping for your guide and driver will be collected at the conclusion of their services. To remove the uncertainty and stress of not knowing how much is appropriate to tip we recommend AUD$6 per person per day for your guide and AUD$3 per person per day for your driver to be paid in local currency. The amount you wish to contribute is dependent on the services received and at the complete discretion of the guest. Thank you for your understanding.

Yala National Park
Please note that Yala National Park closes for a period between the months of September and October. The exact closure dates are made clear closer to the time. The closure is due to the prevailing dry weather prior to this time and taking into consideration the well-being of the wildlife in the reserve. For departure dates that fall over this period, as defined in the departure dates listed below, Yala National park will be replaced with a visit to Udawalawe National Park, while still being able to visit Block 4 or 5 of Yala National Park. Please refer to the itinerary.
Although smaller in size to Yala National Park, Udawalawe National Park is considered one of the world's best places to see wild elephants. Largely comprised of grasslands and bush forest, Udawalawe is also one of the best national parks in Sri Lanka for game spotting and being far less crowded than Yala, it makes for a more enjoyable experience for travellers and therefore, we believe is a more than suitable alternative for one safari day. You will still be able to visit Block 4 or 5 of Yala National Park, so you are able to experience both.
