The Inland Route

Our Inland Route takes you on the west side of Lake Champlain. Leave Montreal, heading southeast on A-15 and past Brossard and Napierville before arriving at Champlain on the US border.

Continue south, past Lake George and Glens Falls before following the signs to Albany.

Spend some time exploring this great New York city, before taking I-90 heading east. From here you could take a stop at Springfield or Worcester in Massachusetts, more great cities with fantastic attractions, or continue on I-90 all the way to Boston.

Best time to go on a road trip from Boston to Montreal

The busiest season in Boston runs from June to August — think baseball, festivals, and the droves of summer vacationers and tourists you'll be contending with for hotel rates and parking spaces.

Listen to the locals instead and get the quintessential Boston experience in the fall (between September and October) for warm breezy weather and temperatures in the upper 60 degrees Fahrenheit - perfect for sightseeing, concerts and dining al fresco.

Another plus for visiting in the fall means a chance to catch the ski season in Vermont, which runs from around November to April. Just remember to plan ahead and pack those extra layers if you're hoping to catch some snow.

You could make the trip during the spring, but be warned, you'll also likely experience a lot of rain which may affect some of the outdoor attractions you will want to visit.

If you want to avoid crowds, planning your visit outside of April would be preferable. The incredible Boston Marathon is usually held this month and attracts huge numbers of people from all over the world. You'll also find hotels difficult to book unless you've planned ahead.

This Map Will Take You On The Most Epic Road Trip From Montreal To Boston

  • Below are two itineraries for a road trip from Montreal to Boston .

Boston and Montreal have a lot in common. Their metropolitan areas are similar in size, they both have colonial roots, and they both serve as the hub of economic and cultural activity for their geographic regions. Boston also happens to be the major American city that is closest to Montreal. The residents of the cities engage in a lot of informal exchange as a result. Both are popular road trip destinations for their respective residents, and many students in New England flee to Quebec for its cheap tuitions.

The routes between Boston and Montreal are therefore well-travelled. One path, via U.S. Route 89, takes drivers past the city of Burlington, through the Green Mountains of Vermont, and into southern New Hampshire before hitting Greater Boston.

The other itinerary involves a drive through the Eastern Townships of Quebec and the impressive White Mountains of New Hampshire.

Though not lacking in scenic views of the countryside, the five-hour trek between the two metropolises can become dull for those who use it most.

That's why we've put together this list of fun stops along the way. Below you'll find a list of cities and towns along two routes between Montreal and Boston. At the very bottom of this list is an interactive map that illustrates both journeys.

Consider taking a detour to visit one of these destinations in Quebec and northern New England the next time you find yourself on the road to Boston.

The busiest route from Montreal to Boston includes Quebec autoroutes 10, 35, and 133, and U.S. Route 89. These three stops are only possible along this path.

Burlington, Vermont

See on Instagram

The largest city in Vermont sits on the shore of Lake Champlain and commands stunning views of the largest lake in New England and the Adirondack mountains of New York.

In the last two decades, the city has earned a reputation as one of the hippest and most progressive places in the United States (Bernie Sanders was once mayor).

Today, visitors can peruse the cute shops lining the pedestrian-only Church Street, bike along the lake, and enjoy a burger while sitting on a dock.

Montpelier & Barre, Vermont

The Vermont town of Montpelier is the least populous American capital city but it's packed with charm. From the 19th century façades of State Street to the perennial skating rink in front of the State House, Montpelier makes for a fun stop on your way to or from Boston along Route 89.

Almost adjacent to the capital is the town of Barre, whose common (the central park in a typical New England town) is post-card perfect in the snow.

Hanover, New Hampshire

Hanover is a college town, home to Dartmouth, a member of the Ivy League. As such, it's home to everything you'd expect, including student bars and cafés, and a thriving arts scene. The town buzzes with youthful energy.

The colonial architecture of Dartmouth campus is also pretty darn beautiful.

An alternate route from Montreal to Boston takes drivers along Quebec autoroutes 10 and 55 to U.S. routes 91 and 93. These next five stops are only possible with this itinerary.

Magog, Quebec

Magog is a popular year-round destination in the Eastern Townships. The alternative route to Boston takes you right around the city. Take a stroll down rue Principale, grab some amazing poutine at Cantine Chez Paul, and sit by the incredibly difficult-to-type Lake Mephrémagog.

Stanstead, Quebec

Stanstead was once a single community that straddled the U.S.-Canada border. That all changed after 9/11 when the U.S. hardened its defences and put up physical barriers that divided the town.

Visitors can still visit the remnants of the binational town, however, like the dual library and opera house that sits right on the border. A line on the floor marks the division between the two countries. Americans are allowed to step a few feet across the border to read an informational tablet next to the building on the Canadian side.

Rue Canusa Street is similarly unusual. Residents on one side of the street live in Canada while their neighbours on the other side reside in the United States. These Americans live within the Canadian customs zone and have to cross the border to access schools and other services. Be sure to take a look at the license plates of parked cars on either side of the street, it's pretty amusing.

Littleton & Franconia, New Hampshire

The New Hampshire towns of Littleton and Franconia sit at the northern edge of the White Mountains National Forest. Littleton is known for its adorable town centre, complete with boutique shops, diners, and a pretty awesome brewery in an old mill. No visit to Littleton is complete without a walk through the covered bridge that crosses the Ammonoosuc River.

Franconia, meanwhile, is a destination for outdoor activities. The Flume Gorge, a series of waterfalls through a small canyon, is perhaps its most famous feature. It's an easy hike with some pretty spectacular views of the surrounding hills, including Liberty Mountain, whose peak is said to resemble the face of George Washington.

The towns are five minutes apart from each other and make for an easy stop.

Laconia, New Hampshire

Laconia is a city on New Hampshire's Lake Winnipesaukee, a glacial lake with hundreds of islands and lined with cute New England villages. In the summer months, Laconia is a recreational destination, featuring a famous drive-in theatre, beach, and tiny entertainment district (with arcades and bars) along the lakeshore.

When the cold hits, Laconia is a hub of activity for skiers and winter vacationers. The town centre has a collection of restaurants, bars, and shops.

If you have the time, take a drive through the village of Meredith, just a few miles north on the lakeshore.

Tilton, New Hampshire

Tilton is a shopping centre. It has an expansive outlet mall where Quebecer flock to take advantage of tax-free shopping (New Hampshire has no sales tax). Also nearby are all the chain restaurants and retailers that Canada lacks.

Get all your shopping done on your way to or from Boston.

U.S. Routes 89 and 93 converge in Concord, New Hampshire. The following stops are therefore possible no matter the route from Montreal.

Lawrence, Massachusetts

Lawrence is an old industrial city on the Merrimac River. Though it's no longer a manufacturing hub, it retains its 19th-century mill architecture. The city has a busy centre with plenty to see and do.

Lawrence is where the American labour movement got its start, so the city is full of historic sites to check out.

Salem & Marblehead, Massachusetts

These two stops represent the biggest detour on this list. Salem is, of course, a destination in itself. From colonial architecture to an adorable city centre with hundreds of stores and cafés, to its famous witchy history, Salem is a must-see. Visitors must be sure to visit the museums, including the Witch Museum and Peabody-Essex, a large and impressive collection of art and architecture (there's even an early-modern Chinese mansion right in the middle of the museum).

Adjacent to Salem is the town of Marblehead, which has little in the way of places to shop and eat but is famous for its narrow colonial streets, and bright, old homes. It's a lesser-known stop with plenty of Instagram fodder.

Cambridge, Massachusetts

Cambridge is part of the Boston metropolitan area (it borders the city) and is often lumped in with the Massachusetts capital in the popular imagination.

Begin with a walk past the colonial mansions of Brattle Street before hitting Harvard Square and campus. From there, walk all the way down Massachusetts Avenue through the bustling Central Square (with some of the best restaurants in Greater Boston) and MIT campus. You'll end up at the Mass Ave. bridge and Memorial Drive, which commands mesmerizing views of the Boston skyline across the Charles River.

That completes my list of recommended stops on the way to Boston from Montreal. This list also works in reverse for you Americans travelling to the Quebec metropolis.

Here's a map to help you find your way!

This guide features the best routes and pit stops, making your journey a memorable and enjoyable experience. Part 1: Differences in Driving Regulations between the US and Canada

Driving regulations differ between the US and Canada.

It’s essential to know and understand the regulations before embarking on a road trip. The rules apply to everything, from speed limits to driving under the influence.

Speed Limits

Speed limits in Canada are measured in kilometers per hour, while the US measures speed limits in miles per hour. Additionally, different Canadian provinces have different speed limits.

In contrast, the US has a set speed limit for each jurisdiction.

Seatbelts and Car Seats

Seatbelt and car seat regulations are similar in both countries. Drivers and passengers in both countries must wear a seatbelt when in the car.

Children are required to use a properly secured car seat depending on their age, weight, and height.

Drinking and Driving

In Canada, the legal blood alcohol level while driving is 0.08%, while it’s slightly lower in the US at 0.07%. Penalties for driving under the influence can be severe in both countries, including fines and license suspension or revocation.

Additionally, drunk driving charges can lead to higher insurance premiums.

Handheld Devices

Many Canadian provinces and US states have laws prohibiting the use of handheld devices while driving to reduce distracted driving. It’s essential to be familiar with these laws before starting your road trip.

Winter Tires

Winter tires are a necessity in Canada and are mandatory for drivers in some provinces. When travelling between November and April on certain roads, winter tires help provide traction and improve control in icy, snowy, or slushy conditions.

In comparison, winter tires are not required by law in the US, but they are strongly recommended. Part 2: The Cost of

Gas for the Boston to

Montreal drive.

It’s essential to budget for the cost of tolls and gas when planning a road trip.

The cost of travel for the Boston to

Montreal drive varies depending on several factors, such as the chosen route, the season, and the type of vehicle.

The cost of tolls varies depending on the route taken. For example, taking the Interstate 89 Route would usually cost around $8.50 to reach the Canadian border.

Additionally, taking the 309 route alongside Maine’s coast has significantly fewer tolls than other routes. However, this route might be longer, so it’s essential to factor in the additional fuel expenses.

Gas prices also vary between the US and Canada and may fluctuate depending on the time of year. Typically, prices are higher in the US during the summer months and lower during the winter.

Prices in Canada can reach higher levels due to the country’s tax rates. It’s essential to plan the gas expenses of your trip based on how much your vehicle consumes and the distance you intend to cover.

There are several fuel stops available along the way from Boston to

Montreal, with prices usually varying between $2.50 and $3.50 per gallon, depending on the distance travelled and the season. It’s important to note that there are fewer fuel stops on some routes, so it’s advisable to fill your tank before starting the journey to avoid running out of gas.

Planning a road trip from Boston to

Montreal requires careful budgeting and researching the driving regulations. Understanding the different driving regulations between the US and Canada, as well as the cost of tolls and gas, can help prepare a successful, enjoyable, and stress-free journey.

Make sure to account for all the potential costs, factor in some contingency days, and be flexible with your schedule for the best experience. Part 1: Weather Considerations for the Drive at Different Times of the Year

Weather can significantly impact a road trip from Boston to

It’s crucial to check the weather forecast before embarking on the journey to understand any potential weather-related issues and prepare accordingly.

Winter weather can make driving conditions more challenging, with snow and ice on the roads reducing visibility and making driving more risky. Snow tyres are mandatory in some parts of the US and Canada, so ensure your vehicle is fitted with them if necessary and carry tire chains to be extra-sure in case they are required.

Take a look at government websites for information about which roads have been cleared and which are closed due to weather. Pack any essential items and warm clothing, like blankets, heavy coats, and extra gloves.

Spring typically sees more rainy weather. Rain increases the risk of hydroplaning, which can cause accidents in wet driving conditions.

It’s essential to slow down and maintain a safe driving distance when driving in wet weather. Consider replacing your windshield wipers before the trip, so they are in good condition.

Summers are usually warm and sunny, with many travellers hitting the road for vacations and day trips. It’s crucial to beware of sun glare, stay hydrated, and take frequent breaks to avoid fatigue.

Plan your stops before you set out so that you get breaks in the shade, and make sure your cooling system is working well to keep the vehicle at a comfortable temperature.

In fall, falling leaves from trees can pose a visibility threat and may obscure road markings that help navigate the route effectively. Ensure you drive carefully in leafy areas and keep an eye on the traffic ahead.

Fog is also common in fall, and it can significantly decrease visibility, so make sure to reduce speed and keep a safe distance between your car and other vehicles. Part 2: Tips for Traveling with Pets on a Boston to

Montreal Road Trip

Bringing your furry friend on a road trip can be a fun and rewarding experience.

It’s crucial to plan ahead and take some precautions to ensure the journey is comfortable for your pet.

Get Your Pet Used to the Car

Before the trip, get your pet used to being in a car by taking a few short trips around town ahead of time. Gradually increase the length of the journey to get your pet accustomed to longer car rides.

Make Frequent Stops

Pets need regular exercise breaks and opportunities to relieve themselves. Plan your stops to account for your pet’s needs and look up the best rest stops along the way to ensure there is ample space for them to stretch their legs.

Pack for Your Pet

Bring everything your pet needs for the trip, such as food, water, bowls, bedding, toys and a leash. Ensure that your pet is well-rested in a comfortable place, like a crate, to make the journey as comfortable as possible.

Verify That Your Hotel or Accommodation Is Pet-Friendly

Ensure that you’ve booked pet-friendly accommodation, as not all hotels welcome pets. An increasing number of hotels these days do offer dog-friendly rooms, but some hotels may have weight limits, breed restrictions, or require an additional deposit.

Safety First

As with everyone else in the car, make sure your pet is safely strapped in with a harness or crate. It will keep them secure, prevent them from getting injured in an accident and helping to ensure that if you have to brake suddenly, they don’t become projectiles.

Montreal is a fantastic journey to take with your furry friend. By planning ahead and taking precautions, you can do everything to make the trip as smooth and comfortable as possible for them and you! Be safe, keep everyone in the cars comfort at a maximum, and you’ll have long-lasting memories to treasure together while exploring the beautiful road landscape!

The Daily Adventures of Me

A Family Road trip from Boston to Montreal

This summer we took a road trip to a foreign city new to my family- Montreal, Canada. Driving from Boston to Montreal is an ideal New England road trip. In a pretty easy half-day drive you can be in not only a different country, but one that feels foreign. Montrealers speak French, along with English, and the city has a definite European feel.

Road trip to Montreal through New Hampshire

Our home base is Providence, Rhode Island, so I was actually traveling from Providence to Montreal, but for the sake of my readers, I will use Boston as a starting point.  We drove through Boston on our way out. It is fairly equidistant to travel through New Hampshire or Vermont to get to Montreal from Providence or Boston, so we chose to travel a different route for each leg of our journey. This gave us a chance to explore more of our beloved New Hampshire , but also one of my favorite states, Vermont . Either route takes a little under 5 hours.

How to Visit the Derby Line on your Road Trip

On my first trip up this stretch of road I kept seeing signs for Derby Line that intrigued me. After we got to Montreal I did some research to find out what this line is. The Derby Line is the estimated line half way between the North Pole and the Equator– and a definite road trip must stop!

Derby Line, Vermont/Stanstead, Quebec

Derby Line and Stanstead are two towns built straddling the US and Canada border. There are streets that go directly from one country to another and even a building that sits right on the border– The  Haskell Free Library and Opera House  which was built as a symbol of friendship between the two countries. You can enter the building in the US and exit into Canada, passing through a patrolled crossing. You can also have your feet in both countries at the same time. Follow your GPS to the library and you will be there! I thought it was really cool, my husband expected border guards to come surround us the whole time. There is one imposing sign that suggests that, but the placards state that you can use the walkway to the library which crosses the border.

Ben and Jerry’s Factory

Road trip from Boston to Montreal

This famous ice cream factory is a place I return to whenever I happen to be in Vermont and it is right on the route between Boston to Montreal! Ice cream is one of my very favorite foods and Ben and Jerry’s falls in my top favorites for mass-produced ice cream.

Not only is there an ice cream bar with every flavor of Ben and Jerry’s possible, there are also other fun things to do here. For a small fee, you can see the inner workings of the factory (well, from a viewing platform). At the end you get to try a new flavor. After your tour, be sure to check out the flavor graveyard, where some of my favorite flavors are laid to rest. (Did you ever try Oats of This World?– I miss it!)  I would plan to spend between 1-2 hours here.

Warren Falls, Vermont

drive Boston to Montreal

It will only add about 20 minutes to your drive to add these waterfalls to your Boston to Montreal itinerary. Not only will you be rewarded by natural swimming pools, but also multiple falls and a natural slide only a .1 mile hike off the road.

Crossing the Border Between the US and Canada

You will need a passport, whether you are walking or driving across this border. If you have NEXUS to help expedite your crossing, it only will help if everyone in your car has it. The lane is only open certain hours as well. Because I have it, but not my kids, we all had to wait in line.

As an aside, I have NEXUS as part of my Global Entry package, which was some of the best money I have spent to make travelling easier.

Pretty cool fact– The border between the US and Canada is the longest international border in the world!

You will have about an hour after you cross the border until you reach Montreal. I should add that is without traffic. Montreal has egregious traffic, so plan accordingly.

Read on to explore Montreal with us!

Also, if you keep driving about two hours more, you can get to Quebec , my favorite Canadian city!

Great, thanks! [email protected]

You found a lot of good places to stop along the way! Yum to Ben and Jerry’s! Those waterfalls looks nice too.

I would certainly hit that candy store for some road trip supplies for a road trip from Boston to Montreal. I love all the scenery you got as you travelled through Vermont. I might be tempted to stop for longer. We too have a Nexus card and we love how easier it is to tackle the border.

What a great article. Loved reading about your experience driving from Boston to Montreal and the spots you found along the way. The Quechee Gorge looks super cool and I would love to experience it myself.

This looks so awesome! Visiting Vermont has been something Ive always wanted to do and haven’t had the opportunity yet. Your photos are gorgeous. I was actually surprised that the halfway point between the North Pole and the equator is that far north, in my mind it would have been lower.

Thanks for the great blogpost of your trip. It inspired me to take a few of the same stops as well. We’ll travel the other way around though, as part of our 4 week 10-stop US/Can roadtrip that will include NY, Niagara, Algonquin, Cape Cod etc.

Great blog post! Your detailed account of the drive from Boston to Montreal is both informative and engaging. Your descriptions of the scenic views along the way and the various towns and cities you passed through make me want to take the same trip myself.

I loved the longest candy counter photo! Warm Summer Regards!

Lamenting Boston’s relatively mild winter this year and looking for colder climes and some actual snowfall, with a side of poutine , smoked meat , bagels , and French classics ? Montreal is merely a five-hour drive away, a not-too-inconvenient trek for a long weekend of eating, snowshoeing, and eating some more. (Sure, it’s worth the trip in the summer as well, although if you can brave the cold, you’ll find shorter waits at a lot of the most touristy hot spots. Winter visitors may find that they can waltz right into Schwartz’s when that smoked meat craving hits.)

Be sure to peruse Eater Montreal as you plan your trip, starting with the Ultimate Visitor’s Guide to Eating in Montreal . Don’t ignore the actual drive, though — taking a meal break around the three- or four-hour mark in each direction will make the remainder of the drive a breeze and allow for a bit of Vermont exploration. Here’s one excellent restaurant to visit in each direction of the drive.

156 Church St., Burlington, Vermont

Stuffed grape leaves are piled on thick yogurt and olive oil on a small white plate on a copper bar top.

Given the right traffic and weather conditions, you might be able to zoom up to Burlington, Vermont, in about three and a half hours; more likely it’ll be around four. But if you leave Boston in the early afternoon and can get that much of the drive under your belt in one go, you can (and should) stop for dinner at the destination-worthy Honey Road and arrive in Montreal with enough time for a nightcap before bed.

Honey Road debuted in mid-2017, courtesy of Oleana alum Cara Chigazola-Tobin and Hen of the Wood alum Allison Gibson. The owners serve as executive chef and general manager respectively. Chigazola-Tobin has landed on the James Beard semifinalist list twice ( 2018 , 2019 ) for her work at the restaurant, and the restaurant itself was a “best new restaurant” semifinalist in 2018.

Under the watchful eye of a neon flamingo, try to snag a seat at the bustling restaurant’s bar and prepare to eat as many of Honey Road’s Eastern Mediterranean mezze as possible. The cocktail list tempts with options like a barberry caipirinha and a turmeric-ginger-infused gin drink, but more driving awaits, and a bartender will be happy to suggest low-alcohol or spirit-free drinks that make use of some of the bar’s flavor-packed ingredients.

The menu varies with the seasons and features plenty of local ingredients. Keep an eye out for a couple must-try dishes or variations on them: grape leaf dolma, stuffed with earthy lamb and served with a thick yogurt, and sticky sweet-spicy harissa chicken wings, served with dried lime labne.

Phnom Penh Sandwich Station

7 North Main St., White River Junction, Vermont

Beef, carrots, mayo, and other ingredients are visible on a sandwich served on a crusty baguette-style roll, sliced in half

From farmers market vending to a food truck to a takeout shop in Lebanon, New Hampshire, to a full-service restaurant in White River Junction, Vermont, Sarin Tin and Lay Yi’s Phnom Penh Sandwich Station has come a long way in the past five years, serving the Upper Valley region exemplary Cambodian and Vietnamese cuisine all the while.

While the Lebanon shop still exists — at least until later this year, when its building is demolished — the sit-down location in downtown White River Junction, open since late 2018, is the place to go for a more leisurely meal (including an expanded menu and a small selection of beer and wine). Located alongside the train tracks, the small, cozy space was home to a diner, Polka Dot Restaurant, for over 50 years .

Depending on the border crossing and traffic, travelers returning from Montreal will likely hit this spot, open for lunch and dinner every day except Sunday, in a little over three hours, leaving only about two hours of driving back to Boston post-meal.

Start with the fried bread appetizer — the crispy bread is topped with an umami-rich pork and shrimp spread and is meant to be dipped in a sweet, spicy, sour sauce. The main course depends on whether you’re in a sandwich mood or looking for a comforting bowl of soup or curry.

Sandwich seekers can choose the Vietnamese banh mi, featuring ham, head cheese, and pate, or the Phnom Penh sandwich, which comes with a choice of protein, such as lemongrass beef or ginger garlic pork. On the soupier side, especially for a cold winter day, the mi kary does the trick. The enormous bowl includes shrimp, tofu, and yellow noodles in a hearty curry broth, embellished with bean sprouts, carrot, potato, green beans, and crispy wontons. With roots in Malaysia and Indonesia, this dish has spread around Southeast Asia in various forms (often called curry laksa) and feels like a natural fit for Phnom Penh Sandwich Station’s menu — and a satisfying way to wrap up a long weekend of feasting.

A Ridiculously Scenic and Splendidly Inefficient Route from Boston to Montréal, via Vermont

' src=

(Note: This is the second in a series of posts describing a two-week, 3,710-mile road trip going clockwise from the Boston area up to Québec, out through the Canadian Maritimes, then back down the New England coastline. The series begins here .)

Upon learning that the second leg of our road trip would take my boys and me from Boston to Montréal, a colleague from Burlington advised that the fastest route would be to follow I-93 to I-89. And then he advised that we not go that way, but instead follow the route described here.

After enjoying our evening on Boston’s Charles River Esplanade , making one quick stop in Cambridge to touch John Harvard’s shiny left foot and then another at Lexington to see the Minutemen monument on the Green, we headed west on Route 2, dubbed the Mohawk Trail . We overnighted near Millers Falls before reaching our northward turn, which came the next morning just past I-91 at Shelburne Falls , crossing into Vermont on Route 112.

GREEN MOUNTAIN COUNTRY

Route 112 becomes 110 in Whitingham, the first town of consequence across the state line. We continued to Wilmington, then made the day’s first cut across precisely (if unimaginably) named Green Mountain National Forest on 9, turning again northward not on 7 but on 7A, which passes through several charming villages. Lunch was in Manchester at Sam’s Wood-Fired Pizza Co., memories of their Neapolitan-style pizza and hand-crafted root beer causing my mouth to water as I type. The town is a refreshing combination of rural ease and modernity, of commerce encroaching timidly on pastoral life, where stately residences are approached on sidewalks of locally-quarried marble.

Speaking of marble: Because I was traveling with three adrenaline-inclined young males, the primary draw to this part of the state was the Norcross-West marble quarry just west of Dorset. This was not out of interest in its marble or its history (it was founded in 1785 as America’s first such quarry and for a couple of centuries provided most of the region’s tombstones), but because today it serves as a massive swimming hole unlike any we’ve ever visited.

The boys had never been to New York, so once we’d dried off from our many Dorset plunges, the opportunity to easily check that box compelled us to dip over the state line at Poultney . We followed 30 north along the shores of lovely lakes Bomoseen and Hortonia , took 73 east through Brandon and its adjacent wildlife refuge swamp , then continued eastward over the pass (for our second crossing of the Green Mountains) to Rochester , where we stopped for treats at the farmers’ market .

The afternoon hour growing late and one essential, top-secret engagement left on the day’s agenda, we hustled up 100 through Waitsfield , where the Lawson Brewery offers foosball, cornhole and similar games to kids who are patiently enduring their parents’ sampling experience. Finally we arrived at Waterbury (and right now you’re thinking, “Wait, why does that name make me feel deep satisfaction sprinkled with a tinge of guilt?”), where I surprised my travel companions by ushering them into the day’s last tour of the Ben & Jerry’s Factory . Even if our windows’ wallpaper throughout the day had not been a breathtaking blur of lush fields and hills, red barns, crystalline streams and lakes, gaudy wildflowers and freshly-stocked honor stands — to say nothing of our unforgettable time at the quarry — this stop alone would have made every mile worthwhile, given the demographic of the entourage. I eventually managed to coax my chunky monkeys back into the car and, well-sated, we lumbered down I-95 toward the sunset and Burlington , where we pitched our tent in the quiet, grassy North Beach Campground .

BURLINGTON AND LAKE CHAMPLAIN

There’s a lot to like about diminutive Burlington. A winding bike path along the waterfront is perfect for rides and walks. The vibrant, pedestrians-only Church Street Marketplace is lined with restaurants and shops. The Fleming Museum houses a fine collection of art. Southwest of town, Shelburne Farms is a 1,400-acre working farm, forest and National Historic Landmark built in the 1890s from the inheritance of Eliza Vanderbilt Webb, youngest child of William Henry and Maria Louisa Vanderbilt. Its vast grounds include a museum, a restaurant and bakery, stables, and an inn with spectacular views.

We opted to spend our morning at Lake Champlain’s North Beach , in anxious anticipation of sighting the lake’s resident monster, Champ. We’ve taken an oath not to disclose whether we in fact spotted the fabled and elusive American Nessie, but the weather board did indicate a “100% chance of Champ,” if that gives you any clue. (My colleague did suggest that we not only watch for Champ, but also “keep an eye on water quality warnings — we get agricultural runoff, so the lake’s not as clean as we might like.”) Brunch included yummy huevos rancheros, mushroom-Gruyere quiche and gingerbread pancakes from Penny Cluse Café , and then we headed north.

CROSSING TO CANADA

We made our way toward the border on U.S. Route 2 , rather than on I-89, this at the recommendation of both my colleague and my eldest sister, who said that it was both a much more scenic drive and a considerably less-congested border experience. Not having given 89 a chance I’ll simply have to take their word for it, but suspect that it would be difficult to surpass the Grand Isle’s green carpets of farms and forests rolling to Champlain’s shores.

As for the border crossing just north of tiny Alburg, when we arrived there were five people present: The cheerful guard (who grew progressively less cheerful the longer we lingered for photos at the small granite “Canada / United States” obelisk), and our party of four. Suddenly, everything became French and metric, yet the rural beauty endured until we reached Montréal an hour later.

États-Unis–Montréal : guide du parfait road trip

road trip de montreal a boston

Jamie O'Meara

4. Martha’s Vineyard, MA

The cliffs in Aquinnah on Martha's Vineyard are absolutely stunning, and shouldn't be missed when visiting.

Comprised of 6 beautiful towns, Martha’s Vineyard is home to beautiful beaches, quaint Main Streets for shopping and dramatic cliff-lined shores.

To get to Martha’s Vineyard, you’ll need to take a ferry from either Woods Hole or Hyannis (both terminals located on Cape Cod). There is no benefit to picking one over the other, and it’s best to just pick whichever location is more convenient for you (usually it’s Hyannis for most people).

Road Trip Itinerary Options

If you’re looking to combine towns from this list into longer roads trips, or are wondering which towns are close enough to combine together to maximize your time and cover the most ground, I’ve got you covered! Below you’ll find suggested itineraries with different routes you can take while planning the best road trips from Boston.

Option 1: Massachusetts North Shore Road Trip From Boston

A map of the North Shore route from Boston.

For this route, you’ll head north from Boston and visit the following destinations:

  • Newburyport & Plum Island
  • Portsmouth, NH

Days Needed For This Route: 2-4 . If you’re looking for an easy road trip from Boston with lots of options, this is an awesome route to take. You can do it in as little as 2 days for a weekend trip, or add on two additional days to take your time and explore each town.

Option 2: Cape Cod & The Islands Road Trip From Boston

A map of the Cape Cod road trip from Boston route.

For this route, you’ll head south from Boston and visit the following destinations:

  • Martha’s Vineyard

Days Needed For This Route: 7-8 days. Because this route requires ferries from Cape Cod to the islands, and with Cape Cod being a larger region to explore, I recommend a week.

If you have less time, the islands could be done as day trips, and you could attempt this route in about 5 days . If you have 10 days, I would suggest spending one night in Plymouth, 5 days on Cape Cod, two nights on Nantucket and two nights on Martha’s Vineyard for the ultimate Cape Cod road trip.

Option 3: Boston To Bar Harbor Road Trip

A map of the route from Boston to Bar Harbor.

This route will take you up the coast of Maine and stop in these destinations:

  • Newburyport, MA
  • Ogunquit, ME
  • Kennebunkport, ME
  • Portland, ME
  • Bar Harbor, ME

Days Needed For This Route: 7-10 days. I suggest this much time because your final destination, Bar Harbor, is home to Acadia National Park, and there’s so much to see and do just in the park. And each stop along the way is a very worthy destination to spend at least one night in.

If you’re very short on time, you can do this route in 4 nights with this itinerary:

  • On your way to Ogunquit, pass through Newburyport and spend 2-3 hours there. Arrive in Ogunquit late afternoon to spend the night.
  • The next day, spend the morning in Ogunquit, and then drive to Kennebunkport to spend about 3 hours exploring there. Drive to Portland, and spend the night.
  • The next day, spend your morning in Portland, and then drive to Bar Harbor to arrive by mid-afternoon. Spend 2 nights in Bar Harbor.
  • Drive back to Boston.

I have a detailed Boston To Bar Harbor, Maine Road Trip Itinerary if you’d like more help with planning!

Option 4: Vermont Road Trip From Boston

A map of the Vermont road trip from Boston route.

For this route, you’ll head northwest of Boston, and drive through the best towns in Vermont from this list. You’ll cover these destinations:

  • Manchester, VT
  • Woodstock, VT
  • Burlington, VT

Note : This route isn’t as direct as the other routes, and will include 6.5 hours of driving time to get from Boston to Burlington, stopping at the other destinations along the way. But then you can drive direct from Burlington to Boston on your way home, which will only take 3.5 hours.

Days Needed For This Route: 3-5 days . This could easily be a long weekend itinerary if you don’t stop in each town overnight, and just visit Manchester and Stowe for a few hours each. You could, of course, take your time, and do up to 5 nights for this itinerary.

Option 5: Rhode Island & Coastal Connecticut Road Trip From Boston

A map of the coastal Rhode Island road trip from Boston route.

This route will take you southwest from Boston, and you’ll visit these destinations:

  • Providence, RI
  • Newport, RI
  • Block Island, RI
  • Westerly, RI

Days Needed For This Route: 3-6 days . This is another itinerary you could also do in a weekend if you only spend a few hours in Mystic, as a day trip from Newport, and skip going to Block Island. To visit all these destinations, you’ll need about 5 days, but 6 would be ideal to not feel rushed.

Tip : If you wanted to extend your road trip further along this route, there is a ferry that leaves from New London, CT, and goes to the Hamptons!

Option 6: Boston To New York City & The Hamptons Road Trip

A map of the route from Boston to New York City and the Hamptons.

This route will take you to these destinations:

  • Rhinebeck, NY
  • New Paltz, NY
  • New York City
  • The Hamptons
  • Optional add-on: Philadelphia, PA

Note : The route from Boston to The Hamptons, while making all the stops in the Hudson Valley in-between, is not direct, and will take about 7.5 hours without stops, so I highly suggest you stop overnight in at least one of the towns to break up your drive. If you wanted to visit Philadelphia, this would be the route you would want to add that destination to, as you will have to drive through NYC to get there.

Days Needed For This Route: 1 week. To do this route in 7 days, I would suggest spending a few hours each in Hudson and Rhinebeck, then spend the night in New Paltz (splurging at Mohonk Mountain House is definitely worth it!). Then drive to NYC the next day, and spend 3 nights there. Then drive to The Hamptons, and spend 3 nights. If you want to add Philadelphia, you’ll want to add an extra night or two.

If you’re short on time and want to do this route in fewer days, I would suggest spending a night in the Hudson Valley (same as above), spend 3 nights in NYC, but include a day trip to The Hamptons. Or, if The Hamptons is of more interest to you, you could spend one night in NYC, and spend a night or two in The Hamptons. And then drive back to Boston.

The other option is to drive direct from Boston to New York City, and leave out the Hudson Valley towns entirely. On that route, your focus would be New York City and The Hamptons.
