Aruba Oranjestad Cruise Port Guide: Review (2023)

Photo by IQCruising of main street in Oranjestad, Aruba cruise port

Essential travel guide for visitors on a cruise to Aruba (Oranjestad): find out where cruise ships dock, how to get around and explore on foot, the best in Oranjestad, shore excursions, and basics.

By: Editor-in-Chief Update: May 26, 2023

Aruba is one of the most popular destinations in the south Caribbean itineraries. And there are good reasons why this island is a first sight love for most cruisers.

Oranjestad (the capital and cruise port of Aruba) is a neat city, clean, very well kept, and organized, which from the moment you step out of the cruise ship embraces you with a sense of relaxed safety.

Good to Know: Tourist Info, Language and Currency

  • Safety, emergencies, and basics

The beaches of Aruba are famous, spectacular, and very easy to enjoy on your own. The Bus Terminal is right in front of the port exit, public buses are affordable, have stops next to the most popular beaches, and taxis are not the rip-off found in many other Caribbean ports.

Where cruise ships dock in Aruba

Cruise ships dock in Aruba in piers next to the north end of Oranjestad downtown, the capital city of the Island (population around 35,000). There are four docking spots, two of which with Terminal Buildings. Depending on how many ships docked are in port, the walk to the main street – Lloyd G. Smith Boulevard – varies between 5 and 10 minutes.

How to get around

Right outside the cruise terminals or close to the gangways if your ship docks at one of the piers without a terminal building, you will find taxis with official rates. Taxis prices are quite reasonable.

Traveling around by Public Bus

As the cruise traveler reaches the exit gates of the port, the Bus Terminal is right in front – not only very conveniently located but with clear maps of the routes and bus fares to all major destinations (in particular the beaches).

What's within walking distance

If you are not into spending a day at the beach or attracted by water activities, Oranjestad is a lovely city (really a small town) to explore on your own. Just turn right once you exit the port gates and you are in the city. Many cruise passengers walk along the L.G. Smith Boulevard to the Renaissance Marketplace and then back thinking that there isn't more to see in Oranjestad.

Photo of Royal Plazza Aruba

Royal Plaza, Aruba

Nice as this walk is with great high-end shopping and wonderful views of the bay and marina, you would be missing the best of the city. Havenstraat and Schelpstraat (followed by Main Street ) are the main streets to explore. These run parallel to the L.G. Smith Boulevard and you just need to turn inland to find them.

Photo of Royal Plazza Aruba

Surely you will not miss any of these streets if you look out for the tram tracks or the tram itself which offers both transportation and sightseeing to Plaza Nicky and back.

Photo of Street Car Aruba

Street Car, Aruba

In between these major streets, or very close by, the cruise traveler will find most of the landmarks and highlights of Oranjestad: the Archaeological Museum of Aruba, the Protestant Church, the Fort Zoutman Historical Museum, the City Hall, the Renaissance Mall & Marketplace, shopping and more shopping (reputed to be one of the best in the Caribbean as far as tax and duty-free goes); and very nice restaurants to taste local delicacies.

Square Aruba

Square, Aruba

Insider’s Tip: The Editor has always preferred to start the walk around town on the inland streets of Oranjestad, return to the port along the Lloyd G. Smith Boulevard and stop midway for a quick bite with a fabulous view of the marina – The Paddock has been a favorite for many years.

Photo of Eagle Beach in Aruba

Eagle Beach, Aruba

If you wonder why most savvy cruisers talk about Aruba as a top beach destination and why many get off the ship to go straight to the beach and bask in the sun, you should plan to spend (at least) a couple of hours at one of the following beaches:

  • Eagle Beach: voted the #1 Caribbean beach by a USA Today survey of travel writers, travel agents, and frequent travelers. Its immaculate sand stretches for miles, making long, leisurely walks an ideal activity. Eagle Beach offers clear turquoise waters, shaded picnic areas, a few palapas, and many motorized water sports.
  • Baby Beach: lies at the southern end of Aruba. This famous beach wraps around a shallow and remarkably calm lagoon, making it a prime destination for families with small children. Swimmers can wade out for a long distance and still touch the sea bottom. Baby Beach is also a fabulous location for snorkeling in Aruba.
  • Palm Beach: lined by top-rated hotels, the beach is home to several diving and watersports operators, piers, beach bars, restaurants, and wonderful majestic palm trees. The sea is usually very calm in Palm Beach - perfect for swimming, floating, snorkeling, or sailing. Or to enjoy lunch barefoot on the beach.
  • Arashi: along Aruba's western coastline, the beach is known for its crystal-blue water, sugary white sand, well-kept public palapas, and picturesque view of the California Lighthouse. The ocean is typically calm at Arashi, with periodic swells that invite local surfers to flock to the break just north of the main beach. A nearby coral reef offers ideal snorkeling opportunities.
  • Druif Beach: a long, narrow oval-shaped stretch of pristine sand, is connected to Eagle Beach. The tranquil waters and soft, white sand make it an ideal beach for swimming and lounging. Like Eagle Beach, it's also a popular nesting spot for sea turtles.

Aruba shore excursions and tours

Aruba is easy and affordable to explore on your own: be it on foot around Oranjestad, by public bus, or by taxi to farther away attractions. But some sites are better explored on a shore excursion. In particular, if you wish to discover scenic and cultural highlights.

Naturally, all cruise lines offer many and diverse shore excursions in Aruba. Celebrity Cruises offers as many 43 shore excursions and Royal Caribbean has 43 cruise excursions . Carnival lists 28 shore excursions . Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has available 24 shore excursions . Oceania Cruises organizes 13 shore excursions , Holland America offers 19 cruise excursions , and Princess has 26 excursions available.

Besides the cruise excursions organized by cruise lines, there are also shore excursions and tours offered by the following reputable private online services:

  • Tours by Locals
  • Shore Trips
  • Shore Excursions Group
  • Shore Excursioneer

There is a Tourist Information Desk conveniently located at the Cruise Terminal, usually maned all day, where you can get maps and brochures.

Although Dutch and Papiamento (a local dialect) are the official languages, English is widely spoken in Aruba.

Aruba's legal tender is the Florin (AWG). However, US$ dollars are widely accepted. Although you may read reviews stating that "change may come in local currency", in over 20 years visiting Aruba on cruise ships this never happened to any of IQCruising editors.

Aruba Cruise Port: Travel, Beaches & More

Arrive in style at the Aruba cruise port and start exploring our island. What’s your activity for today: shopping, sunbathing or sightseeing?

Cruise port in Aruba on the map

Wondering where the Aruban cruise port is located? You can find it on the northern side of downtown Oranjestad, the capital of the island. The walk to Lloyd G. Smith Boulevard will take five to ten minutes, depending on which of the four docks your cruise ship is docked.

Shopping near the Oranjestad cruise port in Aruba

Oranjestad offers everything you need if you want to go on a shopping spree. Walk from the Lloyd G. Smith Boulevard all the way to the Renaissance Marketplace. Check out all the local goods and souvenirs that are for sale at the shops and market stalls.

Follow the tram tracks to Havenstraat, Schelpstraat, and Main Street. These streets are sometimes forgotten, which is a shame because you can find some lovely shops and boutiques here. They run parallel to the boulevard and are within walking distance from the Aruba cruise ship port.

Aruba beaches near the cruise port

Surfside Beach is a smaller beach that is the closest to the Aruba cruise port. It takes about 15 minutes to walk to this sandy beach.

Eagle Beach is located west of Oranjestad. It is recommended to take a taxi or public bus to Eagle Beach. It isn’t far - just a ten-minute drive - but walking may take some time. Time that you could be spending on a sunbed or swimming, which is preferable over walking if you ask us! There are lots to do at Eagle Beach: water activities, sunbathing, swimming, beach bars, and fine dining.

Palm Beach is located north of Eagle Beach. It is a little further, but definitely worth a visit. Just like Eagle Beach, Palm Beach is full of great restaurants and beach bars. Palm Beach is easy to reach by Arubus or taxi.

Spending your time in Aruba sightseeing

Obviously, there’s lots more to do in Aruba than just sunbathing and shopping. If you want to make the most out of your limited time, try one of the excursions . A local guide will show you all the secrets and highlights of the island.  Renting your own car is also a great idea. This way, you can explore the island when, where, and how you want. Try one of the three routes filled with highlights we laid out for you.

When you arrive at the Aruba cruise port, your options for activities are endless.

The cruise port is located in Aruba’s capital Oranjestad. Turn right on the Lloyd G. Smith Boulevard to the Renaissance Market or follow the tram tracks to Havenstraat or Schelpstraat. It is the perfect place for a shopping spree or stroll along the colorful boutiques.

If you are looking for those famous, white sand Aruban beaches near the cruise port, there are multiple options. Within walking distance is Surfside Beach. Turn right on the Lloyd G. Smith Boulevard and after a fifteen minute walk you can dip your toes in the sand at the beach. Other possibilities are taking a taxi or Arubus to Eagle Beach or - a little up north - Palm Beach. Both are larger than Surfside Beach and you can find many beach bars, restaurants and water activities here.

Make the most out of your limited time by renting a car and exploring the island on your own. Drive either north or south and discover the many secrets this island offers. Return in time to the Aruban cruise ship port for a lovely dinner at a nearby restaurant or a sunset dinner on a cruise .

Royal Caribbean’s Newest Ship 'Utopia of the Seas' Begins 5-Day Sea Trials with Over 900 Experts on Board — See Photos!

The new cruiser will be available for short getaways starting in July

The Royal Caribbean’s latest ship is nearly ready for its debut!

In September 2023, the Utopia of the Seas hit the open ocean for the very first time. Now, starting May 7, the cruise ship is slated to undergo five days of sea trials ahead of its launch this summer.

During this testing period, the ship will cover over 1,000 miles before docking in France for its final phase of production at Saint-Nazaire’s Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard.

Over 900 experts are currently on board the Utopia , Royal Caribbean says.

Architects, engineers and more specialists are all working to ensure that every detail of the massive cruiser — from its engine to its navigation systems — will be ready to set sail from Port Canaveral in Orlando, Fla., on July 19.

Utopia will offer “more pools than the days to count, thrills like the longest dry slide at sea; and showstopping entertainment across air, ice, water and stage,” according to Royal Caribbean.

By the numbers, the ship boasts five pools, three waterslides and two casinos — plus, 21 places to dine and 23 places to drink.

Highlights of its dining options include the Pesky Parrott, a Caribbean-inspired bar, and Royal Railway, “a first-of-its-kind immersive train car dining experience,” per the company.

And, to work up an appetite, the cruiser features a “FlowRider surf simulator,” plus recreational classics, including from rock climbing and mini golf and to an indoor ice arena.

Notably, every Utopia cruise also stops at Perfect Day at CocoCay — Royal Caribbean’s award-winning private island in The Bahamas.

In addition to the ship’s myriad hangouts, guests aboard the new ship can enjoy Perfect Day, which opened in 2019, and its many amenities, from the “tallest waterslide in North America” to the “Caribbean’s largest wave pool.”

Plus, passengers over 18 can visit the island's recently opened Hideaway Beach, a brand-new “adults-only oasis” with a private beach and live music.

Delta Air Lines Is Launching Nonstop Flights From New York to Antigua and Barbuda

Jamaica’s Cruise Industry Is Growing, Buoyed by Royal Caribbean and Disney

Jamaica’s cruise industry is showing strong signs of growth, according to new numbers released by the country’s Ministry of Tourism.

Last year, the island welcomed 1.26 million arrivals, up 48.3 percent compared to the previous year, according to Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett.

The expectation for the 2024-2025 season is to either equal or exceed the previous fiscal year, he said.

“Royal Caribbean Cruise Line (RCCL) has reaffirmed its commitment to Jamaica and has set a target of maintaining their tally of 400,000 visitors to Falmouth every year,” Bartlett said. “Additionally, Disney Cruise Lines expressed their satisfaction with their current operations in Falmouth and have expressed their willingness to consider Port Royal as a future destination, pending the requisite logistical arrangements.”

Jamaica is also looking to attract more “luxury yacht” calls, Bartlett said, presumably companies like Ritz-Carlton or Four Seasons, which have been the most prominent entrants to the ultra-luxe small-ship sector.

More broadly, the island is also looking at becoming a more robust homeporting destination, Bartlett said.

“Jamaica is also able to serve as a homeporting destination, and we are exploring opportunities to expand the supply of goods and services to the vessels that visit our ports,” he said.

Ultimately, though, the island’s cruise industry continues to be anchored by the port in Falmouth, a historic town that has everything from a centuries-old Jewish cemetery to the storied Hampden rum estate.

Falmouth is also a gateway to a host of attractions in the surrounding area, from river tubing to the lush beauty of Dunn’s River Falls.
