How to Visit Sacsayhuaman + the Surrounding Ruins

This post contains affiliate links.

A visit to the Sacsayhuaman ruins is a must from Cusco and is a perfect short morning or afternoon trip.

Sacsayhuaman and its partner ruins of Qenko, Puka Pukara, and Tambomachay are the closest ruins to Cusco and easily accessible by taxi, bus, or even by foot from Plaza de Armas in Cusco’s city center.

If you want to check them out, this guide to visiting the Sacsayhuaman ruins covers everything you need to know, including:

  • How to get from Cusco to Sacsayhuaman

How to get from Sacsayhuaman to Qenko, Puka Pukara, and Tambomachay

  • How to return to Cusco by taxi or by bus

How much does it cost to visit Sacsayhuaman?

  • What to see at the Sacsayhuaman ruins
  • What to see at the Qenko ruins
  • What to see at the Puka Pukara ruins
  • What to see at the Tambomachay ruins
  • How to discover an extra set of secret ruins outside of the main circuit
  • And much more!

Sacsayhuaman boasts gorgeous views of the city from high on the surrounding mountains – a visit here is not something you’ll soon forget. So, add a self-guided tour of Sacsayhuaman to your Cusco itinerary with this guide!

Sacsayhuaman ruins and view of Cusco

The Sacsayhuaman ruins are your destination – this Sacsayhuaman guide will take you there!

How To Get to Sacsayhuaman by Taxi

There are two popular ways to get from Cusco to Sacsayhuaman

You can go by taxi, which is the fastest and easiest way to reach the Sacsayhuaman ruins from Cusco, or you can walk to Sacsayhuaman, which is the most budget friendly way to reach the ruins from Cusco.

I’ll tell you how to do both.

The easiest way to get to the Sacsayhuaman ruins from Cusco is to grab a taxi from the city center. The drive is only about 10 minutes and should cost about 10 soles / 3 usd.

Many taxi drivers will try to convince you to hit all four ruins at once with them for a set price of 40 or 50 soles / 13 to 16 usd which is a good choice for convenience alone. If you don’t think you have it in you to climb hundreds of stairs to walk from Cusco to Sacsayhuaman, then the taxi is the best way for you to reach the ruins.

If you’re in a group of three or four, transportation for this whole outing can be done for 5 usd or less per person.

If you don’t want to walk to Sacsayhuaman from Cusco but also don’t want to spend ~15 usd on the taxi,  it’s possible to visit all four ruins for a cheaper price by using separate taxis for the short trips between each one.

All of ruins are situated along the main highway to Pisac so it’s easy to grab a new taxi each time you’re ready to go to the next one.

If these stairs don’t scare you, you might be ready to walk to Sacsayhuaman

How to Walk to Sacsayhuaman from Cusco

I prefer the most scenic route (ok, and to save money) so Dan and I decided to walk from Cusco to Sacsayhuaman, which takes about 30 minutes.

The climb up hundreds of stairs was tough (especially in high altitude) but the views were insane and it was nice to get a little exercise on the weekend as well.

So, how do you walk to Sacsayhuaman from Cusco? Just follow these steps:

  • Start at Plaza de Armas
  • Walk down the road that runs along the right side of the Cathedral
  • Turn left on Choqechaka road
  • Turn right on the Atoc’sekuchi staircase
  • Climb the staircase until you reach the main road, where you will turn left
  • Walk along the road for a few minutes and you’ll see the Cristo Blanco (Jesus) statue
  • Turn left on the gravel road just past the Cristo Blanco statue
  • Continue along the gravel road and through a field to the entrance to Sacsayhuaman.

You can also put Cristo Blanco as your destination in Google Maps and it’ll lead you straight there on the route listed above. Then, after you enjoy the view, walk along the gravel road behind it (which you’ll also see on Google Maps) to continue to Sacsayhuaman.

There is a lot to see and do in this area of Cusco so I also recommend visiting the Chacan Cave and Temple of the Moon that are right nearby with my handy step-by-step guide!

Snappin’ a selfie at the Cristo Blanco view point

These ruins are laid out in an easy-to-follow ‘circuit’ and the best order to visit them is:

  • Saysayhuaman
  • Puka Pukara
  • Tambomachay

After visiting each ruin, you can go to the main road and wave down a taxi to take you to the next one.

A taxi from Sacsayhuaman to Qenko will cost about 5 soles/ $1.50 usd.

The taxi from Qenko to Puka Pukara will cost around 8 soles/ $2.25 usd more.

Then, from Puka Pukara you can walk to Tambomachay.

If you’re up for more adventure, you can rent a horse from vendors at the entrance to Sacsayhuaman to take you to the rest of the ruins as well.

How to get from the Sacsayhuaman Ruins to Cusco

If you follow the route from Sacsayhuaman to Qenko to Puka Pukara to Tambomachay, the last leg of your trip will be from the Tambomachay ruins back to Cusco.

The ruins are right on the main road between Cusco and Pisac so there are always taxis, buses, and colectivos (shared vans) passing by.

Wait on the side of the road and flag whatever passes by first.

A taxi will be the most expensive option so if you want to continue saving money, I recommend waiting for a colectivo, the second cheapest option, or the bus, which is the cheapest option at only 1 soles / .30 usd per person.

Sacsayhuaman entrance ticket

Sacsayhuaman entrance ticket – Dan and I bought the 10-day Boleto Turistico

The cost to visit the Sacsayhuaman ruins can be divided into two categories: the transportation cost, and the Sacsayhuaman entrance fee.

For transportation from Cusco to Sacsayhuaman and back we paid 15 soles / 4.50 usd total for two people (if you decide to take a taxi, this will go up).

The Sacsayhuaman admission price is a little more confusing because you need to buy the Boleto Turistico (tourist ticket). The Boleto Turistico is sold at the Sacsayhuaman entrance, but, Cusco is unique in that you can’t buy single entrance tickets to the surrounding ruins.

Instead, you have to buy the tourist ticket for one, two, or ten days. This tourist ticket then grants you entrance to multiple popular sites around Cusco, with Sacsayhuaman, Qenko, Puka Pukara, and Tambomachay among them.

The one-day partial Cusco Tourist Ticket with only entrances to Sacsayhuaman, Qenko, Puka Pukara, and Tambomachay costs 70 soles / 25 usd.

But if you’re planning to visit more sites in Cusco or the Sacred Valley, buying the two-day or even the ten-day tourist ticket might make more sense financially, so make sure to weigh your options and know which ticket you want before you go!

What to See at the Sacsayhuaman Ruins

Now you knnow how to get to Sacsayhuaman and how much it costs to see the four ruins, it’s time to dive into what you’ll see when you finally get there!

Sacsayhuaman is the first and largest of the four ruins. They are about 500 years old and were used as a fortress (due to thre strategic location on top of the hill) and had temples, storage, and more.

The Incan stone walls are massive and still well maintained, and you can wander through archways, see ceremonial altars, and much more. As a photographer, my favorite part of the Sacsayhuaman ruins was definitely the sweeping view of the city of Cusco laid out below my feet.

Plan to spend the most time at Sacsayhuaman because these are by far the largest ruins of the four on this route.

Qenko ruins in Cusco

Qenko ruins and view of Cusco

What to See at the Qenko Ruins

Qenko is second on the list and the smallest of the four ruins. This is because it was built as a house and ceremonial site for an important Inca citizen.

The home is unique because it’s nestled into a large rock that you can still walk through today. Make sure you go all the way inside the ruins because you can still visit the cold and eerie ritual alter inside.

Puka Pukara ruins in Cusco

The Puka Pukara ruins

What to see at the Puka Pukara Ruins

Puka Pukara is the third ruin you’ll visit on your half-day trip to Sacsayhuaman.

This site was a military fortress, so its strategically located high above the Cusco valley.

Even though it’s small, Puka Pukara boasts beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and was my favorite of the four ruins.

Tambomachay ruins

Still-working Inca aquaducts at the Tambomacahy ruins

What to see at the Tambomachay Ruins

The final stop on your tour of the four ruins is Tambomachay.

These are set back from the road into a quiet mountainside retreat. The bubbling streams are one of the first things I noticed, and I quickly learned that Tambomachay is thought to have been built to worship the god of water.

Surprisingly, running water still flows through the aquaducts in this ancient and peaceful Incan ruin, which is pretty amazing!

If you haven’t had enough history in your day, visit this fifth bonus ruin on your day trip to Sacsayhuaman.

Just across the street from Qenko there’s another set of ruins hidden in the trees that are completely free to access.

After a quick walk through the forest, you’ll find a quiet but imposing ruin that makes a perfect place to enjoy a picnic away from the crowds.

What to Pack for the Sacsayhuaman Day Trip from Cusco

If you decide to walk to the ruins from Cusco I recommend wearing sturdy hiking boots and bringing a small day pack with:

  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • Cash for the entrance tickets

Loved the ruins, but the megalithic construction I doubt is Incan. Probably Atlantian.

I didn’t do a tour so I don’t really know too much about them. Why do you think that?

Visiting Sacsayhuaman- An Inca Fortress in Cusco, Peru

Purchases made through links earn us a small commission, at no extra cost to you.

The uphill walk from central Cusco to Sacsayhuaman was slow going, since our bodies hadn’t adjusted to the high altitude yet, but the excitement of seeing our first Inca ruin kept us motivated to push on.

Visiting Sacsayhuaman- An Inca Fortress in Cusco, Peru

In between frequent breaks and gasps for air, I hoped that the effort would be worthwhile and Sacsayhuaman would live up to its reputation of being the most remarkable Inca site near Cusco.

Thankfully, it did!

Visiting Sacsayhuaman- An Inca Fortress in Cusco, Peru

At the top of the hill we were met with a stone wall built in the style the Inca were known for. Large, precisely cut stones of various shapes fit tightly together like a jigsaw puzzle, no mortar needed.

Visiting Sacsayhuaman- An Inca Fortress in Cusco, Peru

I’d heard a lot about Inca stonework and how big some of the blocks were (one stone at Sacsayhuaman weighs over 300 tons), but seeing is believing. We weren’t even inside the archaeological site yet and were astounded by what we saw.

Visiting Sacsayhuaman Fortress in Cusco.

After buying our tourist ticket we excitedly entered the fortress-temple complex, eager to explore Sacsayhuaman before the sun went down.

Our Self-Guided Tour of Sacsayhuaman Fortress

The Sacsayhuaman archaeological site is divided into three different zones- the walled fortress/military section, the parade ground, and the Rodadero which is believed to be the religious/ceremonial section.

The first area of Sacsayhuaman we visited was the 3-tiered fortifications. Built in a zigzag pattern, these 22 walls represent the teeth of a puma, Sacsayhuaman being the head of Cusco’s famous puma shape.

The zigzag walls of Sacsayhuaman Fortress.

We spent a lot of time in the military area admiring the stonework as questions flooded our minds.

Where did these rocks come from? How did the Inca shape them? How long did it take to build?

Of course we can never know for sure, but it was fun to discuss some possible theories.

Stone walls at Sacsayhuaman Fortress.

Walking further along the way we soon came to the Intipunku, a gate of impressive proportions and my personal favourite spot in Sacsayhuaman.

Passing through the terrace gateway, we followed the stone steps up a level where we could see clear across the parade ground to the Rodadero hill. It looked especially striking in the golden glow of late afternoon sun.

Overlooking the Sacsayhuaman archaeological site in Cusco.

Continuing to walk throughout the Inca fortress, we soon came to a viewpoint overlooking Cusco. We could see all of Cusco’s important landmarks- Plaza de Armas, La Catedral, and Iglesia de La Compañia de Jesús.

After taking in the view we headed back towards the Sacsayhuaman ruins to enjoy an elevated perspective of the walls before heading down to the large parade ground.

Once on the other side of the field we climbed up the steps of Rodadero, getting to see the zigzag fortifications from afar. The sheer length of the walls was just as impressive as the blocks used to build it.

Most of the structures that once were at Rodadero were torn down by the Spaniards and later inhabitants of Cusco, but you can still see the retaining walls. For us, the best thing about this area of Sacsayhuaman was the view. It was a wonderful place to watch the sky change colour as the sun set on our first day in Cusco.

Final Thoughts About Our Visit to the Sacsayhuaman Ruins

Of all the ruins near Cusco , the Sacsayhuaman fortress was the most monumental one we visited. The stonework alone made the uphill walk worth it, never mind the unique zigzag shape of the walls. It was a great site to observe the preciseness of Inca architecture and design, even if the location wasn’t as dramatic as other Inca ruins such as Pisac or Machu Picchu .

Visiting Sacsayhuaman- An Inca Fortress in Cusco, Peru

Since we visited Sacsayhuaman without a guide we may have missed out on a deeper understanding of the site’s significance, but the benefit was that we could explore at our own pace. Still, I wish we had arrived a little sooner so we had more time to wander around Rodadero before the site closed.

Even if you’re only in Cusco for a short stay, you should make time to visit Sacsayhuaman. It’s definitely a must see in Cusco!

History and Interesting Facts About Sacsayhuaman

  • Sacsayhuaman was constructed in the 15th century during the reign of Pachacuti and his successors. It was the largest structure built by the Incas and said to have capacity for at least 1,000 warriors.
  • The name Sacsayhuaman means “Royal Eagle”.
  • The longest of the three terrace walls is about 400 metres. The walls are approximately 6 metres tall.
  • During the siege of Cusco (1536- 1537), Spanish conquistadors gained control of Sacsayhuaman’s terrace walls, then later captured the entire fortress.
  • After capturing the fortress, the Spaniards used its stones for building materials, destroying much of the complex within a few years. The blocks were used to build new government and religious buildings and some homes. Only the stones that were too large to move remain at the site.
  • After removing most of the stones, the Spaniards covered the site with dirt. Sacsayhuaman was rediscovered during an excavation in 1934.
  • Today the site is used for Inti Raymi, a traditional Inca festival celebrating the winter solstice.

Things to Consider Before Exploring Cusco’s Ruins

Before embarking on your self-guided exploration of Cusco’s ruins, there are a few important factors to consider. Taking these into account will help ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience:

  • Physical Fitness: Exploring the ruins of Cusco can involve walking long distances, climbing steep steps, and navigating uneven terrain. It’s crucial to assess your physical fitness and stamina before embarking on your journey. Regular exercise and hiking can help prepare your body for the physical demands of exploring the ruins.
  • Altitude Adjustment: Cusco is located at a high altitude, which can affect some individuals. It’s advisable to spend a couple of days acclimatizing in Cusco before embarking on your exploration. Take it easy, stay hydrated, and listen to your body. If you experience severe altitude sickness symptoms, it’s essential to seek medical attention.

  • Research and Planning: Before visiting the ruins, take the time to research each site you plan to explore. Familiarize yourself with their historical significance, entry fees, opening hours, and specific rules or restrictions. This will help you make the most of your visit and avoid any surprises.
  • Permits and Tickets: Some of Cusco’s ruins, such as Machu Picchu, require permits or tickets that should be purchased in advance. Be sure to check the requirements and secure your permits or tickets ahead of time to avoid disappointment.

Always inform someone about your planned itinerary and estimated return time. Carry a map, bring a fully charged phone, and consider wearing comfortable and sturdy footwear to prevent accidents.
  • Respect for the Sites: Cusco’s ruins are cultural and historical treasures, so it’s crucial to treat them with respect. Follow the designated paths, avoid touching or climbing on the structures, and refrain from littering. Taking care of these sacred sites ensures that future generations can continue to appreciate their beauty and significance.

Now that you are well-prepared, it’s time to pack your bags, embark on a journey through time, and uncover the captivating secrets of the ancient Inca civilization.

Best Time to Visit Cusco’s Ruins

Choosing the right time to visit Cusco’s ruins can greatly enhance your experience and ensure optimal weather conditions. While Cusco can be visited year-round, there are a few factors to consider when deciding the best time to explore the ancient sites:

  • Dry Season: The dry season, which runs from May to September, is widely considered the best time to visit Cusco’s ruins. During these months, the weather is generally dry and sunny, offering clear skies and excellent visibility. It’s an ideal time for outdoor exploration, with less chance of rain interfering with your plans.
  • Peak Tourist Season: The months of June, July, and August are the busiest and most crowded in Cusco. These months coincide with the summer vacation period in many countries, and Machu Picchu can get particularly crowded. If you prefer a quieter experience, it’s advisable to visit in the shoulder months of May or September when the crowds are thinner.
  • Wet Season: The wet season in Cusco spans from November to March. While rain is more frequent during this time, it can also bring lush green landscapes and fewer tourists. If you don’t mind the occasional rain shower and prefer a more peaceful atmosphere, visiting Cusco’s ruins during the wet season could be a great option.
  • Shoulder Season: The shoulder months of April and October offer a good balance between weather and tourist traffic. The crowds are relatively smaller compared to the peak season, and there is less chance of heavy rainfall. This can be an optimal time to visit the ruins while enjoying pleasant temperatures and avoiding the large tourist crowds.
  • Special Events: Cusco hosts several traditional festivals throughout the year, such as Inti Raymi, Corpus Christi, and the Cusco Carnival. These cultural celebrations provide a unique opportunity to witness traditional dances, music, and local rituals. However, it’s important to note that these events can attract larger crowds, so plan accordingly if you wish to attend.

Ultimately, the best time to visit Cusco’s ruins depends on your personal preferences. Whether you choose to explore during the dry season for optimal weather conditions or during the quieter months to avoid crowds, Cusco’s majestic ruins will awe you at any time of the year. Just remember to plan ahead, check the weather forecast, and make the necessary arrangements for permits or tickets if required. Now, get ready to embark on a journey through history and marvel at the ancient wonders of Cusco!

Essential Items to Bring for Exploring Cusco’s Ruins

When venturing out to explore Cusco’s ruins, it’s essential to be prepared for the varying conditions and terrain you may encounter. Here are some essential items to bring with you:

  • Comfortable Walking Shoes: Exploring the ruins involves a fair amount of walking and possibly hiking, so comfortable and sturdy walking shoes are a must. Opt for closed-toe shoes with good traction to navigate uneven surfaces and gravel paths.
  • Layered Clothing: Cusco’s weather can be unpredictable, with temperature variations throughout the day. Layer your clothing so you can add or remove layers as needed. Include a lightweight, breathable shirt, a warm sweater or jacket for cooler temperatures, and a waterproof outer layer in case of rain.
  • Sun Protection: The sun in Cusco can be intense, particularly at high altitudes. Be sure to bring and wear a wide-brimmed hat or cap to protect your face and neck from the sun’s rays. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin.
  • Daypack or Backpack: A small daypack or backpack is essential for carrying your water, snacks, camera, sunscreen, hat, and any other personal items. Choose one with comfortable straps and compartments to keep your essentials organized.
  • Water and Snacks: Staying hydrated is crucial when exploring Cusco’s ruins, especially at high altitudes. Carry a reusable water bottle and refill it at designated water stations or bring enough water for the duration of your visit. Additionally, pack some energy-boosting snacks to keep you fueled throughout the day.
  • Insect Repellent: In certain areas, especially during the wet season, mosquitoes and other insects can be more prevalent. Be sure to pack insect repellent to protect yourself from bug bites.

  • Maps and Guidebooks: While exploring without a tour, having a detailed map or guidebook can be incredibly helpful for navigation and learning about the history of the sites. Consider carrying a physical map or downloading offline maps and guidebook apps on your phone.
  • First Aid Kit: It’s always wise to carry a basic first aid kit containing essentials such as band-aids, blister pads, pain relievers, and any necessary personal medications. Also, pack a small roll of toilet paper and hand sanitizer for emergencies.

By packing these essential items, you’ll be well-prepared to embark on your self-guided exploration of Cusco’s ruins. Remember to pack light and comfortable, and be respectful of the sites you visit. Now, get your gear ready, embrace the adventure, and immerse yourself in the fascinating history and natural beauty that awaits!

How to Get to Cusco’s Ruins

Getting to Cusco’s ruins is relatively easy, thanks to the well-established transportation network in the region. Depending on the specific ruin you wish to visit, here are some common transportation options:

  • Taxi or Private Car: Hiring a taxi or private car is a convenient option for reaching the ruins. You can negotiate a price with the driver, who will drop you off at the entrance. This option offers flexibility and allows you to explore multiple sites at your own pace. However, be sure to arrange for a pickup or have the driver wait for you, as finding taxis at remote sites can be challenging.
  • Public Bus: Public buses are an affordable option for reaching some of the popular ruins near Cusco. Look out for buses heading towards the specific site you wish to visit and be prepared for a more crowded and less comfortable journey. Ensure you have a good understanding of the bus route and schedule, as they may not operate regularly or have limited availability.
  • Collective Taxis: Collective taxis, also known as colectivos, are shared taxis that follow specific routes. They can be found at designated locations and are a popular choice for reaching more remote ruins outside of Cusco. Colectivos can be cost-effective and provide a chance to interact with locals, but be prepared for potentially cramped seating and frequent stops to pick up other passengers.
  • Walking/Hiking: Some of the ruins near Cusco, such as Sacsayhuaman or Q’enqo, are within walking distance from the city center. If you are up for a hike, exploring these ruins on foot can be a rewarding experience and allow you to enjoy the surrounding scenery. However, be mindful of the distance and elevation gain, especially if you are not acclimatized to Cusco’s high altitude.
  • Organized Tours: If you prefer a bit more structure and guidance, joining an organized tour is an excellent option. Many tour companies offer packages that include transportation to multiple ruins, guided tours, and additional perks. This option is convenient and ensures you don’t have to worry about logistics, but keep in mind that you may have less freedom to explore at your own pace.

It’s important to note that some sites, like Machu Picchu, require additional transportation arrangements, such as a train or bus ride. These can be booked in advance through authorized providers or as part of a tour package.

Before setting off, double-check the opening hours and admission requirements for the specific ruins you plan to visit. Also, consider the time and cost involved in reaching each site to help plan your itinerary efficiently.

By choosing the transportation option that best suits your needs and preferences, you can easily access and explore the magnificent ruins of Cusco. Enjoy the journey, embrace the adventure, and prepare to be captivated by the rich history and stunning beauty that awaits you!

Exploring Cusco’s Ruins: A Step-by-Step Guide

Exploring Cusco’s ruins without a tour gives you the freedom to create your own unique journey. While there are numerous ruins to choose from, here is a step-by-step guide to help you make the most of your self-guided exploration:

  • Plan your itinerary: Research the different ruins in Cusco and decide which ones you would like to visit based on their historical significance, accessibility, and personal interests. Take into consideration the time needed to explore each site to plan your itinerary effectively.
  • Check opening hours and tickets: Before heading out, check the opening hours of the ruins you plan to visit. Some ruins have specific time slots or limited entry, so it’s important to plan accordingly. Purchase any required tickets or permits in advance to avoid any last-minute complications.
  • Start early: To make the most of your day and beat the crowds, aim to start your exploration early in the morning. This allows for more peaceful and uninterrupted exploration, especially at popular sites like Machu Picchu.
  • Bring essential items: Pack all the essential items mentioned earlier, including comfortable walking shoes, layered clothing, sun protection, water, snacks, camera, maps, and any necessary permits or tickets.
  • Take your time: One of the advantages of exploring without a tour is the ability to move at your own pace. Take your time to soak in the history, architecture, and breathtaking views of each site. Pause, reflect, and appreciate the ancient wonders around you.
  • Respect the sites: Show respect for the ruins and the surrounding environment. Stick to designated paths, avoid touching or climbing on the structures, and refrain from littering. These ancient sites are delicate, and preserving their integrity ensures future generations can continue to enjoy them.
  • Seek information: While exploring, look for informational signage or guidebooks that provide insights into the history and significance of each ruin. This will enhance your understanding and appreciation of the sites you visit.
  • Embrace the unexpected: While having a plan is important, be open to spontaneity and unexpected discoveries. Allow yourself to wander off the beaten path, explore hidden corners, and stumble upon lesser-known ruins and unique viewpoints.
  • Stay hydrated and energized: With the high altitude and physical activity involved in exploring the ruins, it’s important to stay hydrated and properly fueled. Drink plenty of water and have snacks handy to keep your energy levels up throughout the day.
  • Take breaks and rest: Exploring the ruins can be physically demanding. Listen to your body and take breaks when needed. Find a quiet spot to sit, relax, and absorb the beauty and tranquility of the surroundings.
  • Capture memories: Don’t forget to capture your adventure through photos and videos. Take time to capture the stunning landscapes, intricate architectural details, and unforgettable moments you encounter along the way.

By following these steps, you’ll be well-prepared to embark on an enriching and fulfilling self-guided exploration of Cusco’s mesmerizing ruins. So, lace up your shoes, grab your camera, and get ready to embark on a journey through time and history!

Suggested Itinerary for Exploring Cusco’s Ruins

With so many incredible ruins to explore in and around Cusco, it’s helpful to have a suggested itinerary to maximize your time and experience. Here is a sample itinerary to guide your self-guided exploration of Cusco’s ruins:

  • Day 1: Sacsayhuaman and Qenqo

Start your exploration with the magnificent and expansive ruins of Sacsayhuaman, located just outside of Cusco. Marvel at the massive stone walls and intricate terraces that demonstrate the incredible Inca craftsmanship. From here, you can walk to Qenqo, a site known for its underground chambers and impressive stone carvings. Enjoy the panoramic views of Cusco from these ruins.

  • Day 2: Pisac and Ollantaytambo

Take a full day trip to the Sacred Valley, starting with the ruins of Pisac. Explore the terraces, temples, and residential areas perched on the mountainside. Afterward, head to Ollantaytambo, a well-preserved Inca fortress with captivating stone architecture. Climb the steep terraces for a breathtaking view of the Sacred Valley.

  • Day 3: Moray and Maras Salt Mines

Visit the archaeological site of Moray, famous for its unique circular terraces believed to have been used for agricultural experimentation by the Incas. From there, make your way to the nearby Maras Salt Mines, a series of thousands of salt pans cascading down the mountainside. Take a stroll among the dazzling salt formations and learn about the traditional salt extraction methods.

  • Day 4: Machu Picchu

Take an early morning train from Cusco to Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu. Spend the day exploring this iconic Inca citadel, marvel at the perfectly carved stone structures, and experience the awe-inspiring views of the surrounding mountains. Consider starting your visit early to catch the sunrise and savor the tranquil atmosphere before the crowds arrive.

  • Day 5: Choquequirao

If you’re up for a more adventurous and off-the-beaten-path experience, consider a day trip to Choquequirao. This remote and lesser-known Inca site offers an incredible journey through rugged mountains and deep canyons. Explore the terraces, temples, and impressive hilltop views that rival those of Machu Picchu.

Remember, this is just a suggested itinerary, and you can customize it according to your preferences and time constraints. Keep in mind the distances between the sites and plan your transportation accordingly. Also, be sure to check the opening hours and entry requirements for each ruin in advance.

By following this itinerary or creating your own, you’ll be able to immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring history and cultural richness of Cusco’s remarkable ruins. Enjoy the journey and create unforgettable memories as you explore these ancient wonders!

Safety Tips for Exploring Cusco’s Ruins

Exploring Cusco’s ruins can be an exciting adventure, but it’s important to prioritize your safety throughout your journey. Here are some essential safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Acclimate to the altitude: Cusco is located at a high altitude, so it’s crucial to give yourself time to acclimate before embarking on any physical activities. Take it easy during your first few days, stay hydrated, and listen to your body.
  • Stay hydrated: The high altitude and physical exertion can increase the risk of dehydration. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
  • Protect yourself from the sun: The sun in Cusco can be intense, so protect your skin by wearing sunscreen with a high SPF, a wide-brimmed hat or cap, and sunglasses.
  • Dress appropriately: Wear comfortable and weather-appropriate clothing, including layered clothing for temperature fluctuations and sturdy walking shoes with good traction.
  • Carry essential items: Bring a small backpack with essential items like water, snacks, a map, a first aid kit, and any necessary permits or tickets.
  • Be cautious of your surroundings: Pay attention to your surroundings at all times. While Cusco’s ruins are generally safe, it’s always wise to be aware of your belongings and avoid isolated areas.
  • Follow designated paths: Stick to designated paths and avoid climbing on the structures or touching any artifacts. The ruins are fragile, and preserving their integrity is crucial.
  • Be cautious of altitude sickness: Altitude sickness can affect individuals differently. If you experience severe symptoms such as dizziness, shortness of breath, or severe headaches, descend to a lower altitude and seek medical attention if necessary.
  • Travel with a companion: It’s advisable to explore Cusco’s ruins with a companion, especially if you plan to visit more remote sites. Having a travel partner adds an extra layer of safety and support.
  • Inform someone of your itinerary: Before heading out to explore the ruins, inform someone about your planned itinerary and estimated return time. This way, someone will be aware of your whereabouts and can provide assistance if needed.

By following these safety tips, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable exploration of Cusco’s ruins. Remember that your well-being is of utmost importance, so prioritize your health, stay vigilant, and make responsible choices throughout your journey. Now, go forth with confidence and embrace the wonder and history that lies within Cusco’s mesmerizing ruins!

Sacsayhuaman

Cusco, Cusco Region, Peru

Bucket List Experience

View of the Sacsayhuamán ruins, with mountains in the background

This ruined Inca fortress and ceremonial centre to the sun perches over Cusco – with magnificent views of the city from its massive walls. The masonry boggles the mind: boulders weighing hundreds of tons cut into strange geometric shapes – transported without the use of the wheel – are jigsaw-pieced together without cement or metal tools.

The ruins represent just a fifth of its original mass. Even so, it’s an imposing sight: a series of tri-level ramparts hundreds of metres long and overlooking a vast field. The scale of some boulders is truly monumental, a testament to the ingenuity of Inca masonry.

Getting there & doing it

Sacsayhuaman stands on a large plain that overlooks Cusco.

Get there Inca-style by making the steep, 30-minute hike up an old roadway from Cusco centre. The trail begins at the north-western end of Calle Pumacurco, through the narrow, mansion-lined streets of atmospheric San Blas.

It’s straightforward to walk around the ruins self-guided (information is available from the tourist office on Plaza de Armas – Portal Harinas 177), but a guided tour is far more rewarding (guides available through the tourist office).

When to do it

It’s open all year round, seven days a week. Ideally, visit mid-afternoon, when the ruins are bathed in golden light and tourists are leaving. Avoid after dark when the location attracts thieves.

Travel Guide

Places to explore on our 1 day sacsayhuaman and pisac day tour.

The archaeological site of Sacsayhuaman  – the iconic and impressive archaeological complex of the ancient empire, which sits atop a hill overlooking the Inca’s former capital city, most academics agree that Sacsayhuamán was an important military or ceremonial site at the time of the Incas. The ruins date back to the time of Pachacutec, the Inca ruler who brought the Inca Empire to its climax around AD 1200. The most remarkable characteristic of the site is its megalithic architecture, with the largest stones standing 8.5 meters (28 feet) and weighing 330,000 kilograms (361 tons).

Q´enqo archeological complex  – It is a place where the Incas worshiped their gods, consisting of a large carved outcrop overlooking a raised platform in a semi-circular plaza, and a square structure. What is left today of complex of Q’enqo are carved rocks that couldn´t be destroyed by the Spanish; there is little left of the paths and aqueducts, as well as of the enclosures, the deposits or the liturgical baths, besides the great layer of gold that illuminated the whole place.

Archaeological Center of Puka Pukara  – it was probably a stronghold for the Inca capital city protection, as well as a kind of storage for quite a few agricultural products. Also, the traditional information show that, when the Inca was about to visit the Baths of Tambomachay, the formidable group of soldiers, dancers and others stayed in Puka Pukara, that represented the quarters and “tambo” (resting place).

Inca archaeological site of Tambomachay  – this site was popularly known as the “Inca’s Baths”. Researchers believe Tambomachay was an important center of worship of water. It is an archaeological complex made up of well-crafted canals, walls and windows which show the Incas’ extraordinary architectural talents and their in-depth knowledge of hydraulics.

The archaeological site of Pisac  – the largest fortress city of the Incas in the Sacred Valley and one of the largest of ancient America, is well-known for agricultural terracing that rise from the bottom of the mountain to the top in a harmonious way, constitute a stupendous ruin complex of the finest Inca stonework, with many attendant buildings, baths and storehouses, exceptional flights of terracing, and quantities of tombs, all well defended by walls, gates and towers. The complex seems to feature some example of almost everything the Incas did in terms of architecture; with religious, administrative and residential constructions.

The Inca Village of Pisac  – is a charming village, situated at the heart of the Sacred Valley of the Incas in Peru, is well-known for its traditional colourful market, where offers the visitors the opportunity to buy or just watch a lot of Indian handmade products by local craftsmen or neighboring communities. Also, it is famous for hosting the Inca archaeological site of the same name. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays are made craft fairs in the main square where all the artisans participate and shows its beautiful works, and its alive culture intact.

Please contact us through this page by filling out the ENQUIRY form, ask first for availability, and we will give you all the information on how to book the Classic Sacred Valley Tour 1D, and once we agree, you will book the requested tour, otherwise we cannot assure availability.

Sacsayhuaman Visit – Getting There

After our Tambopata River Adventure was finished, we returned to Cusco for a couple more nights.  On the first afternoon, I negotiated in Spanish with a cab to take us on a self-guided Sacsayhuaman visit.  It’s called Sexy Woman by tourists.  I don’t think I negotiated too well, as we quickly settled on a price that included visiting the other 3 nearby ruins as well.   It was late afternoon, so our visits to each site were fairly short, but that suited us just fine.  I don’t like waiting for a group and I don’t mind missing out on a little narrative.  A cab is less expensive, faster and more enjoyable than a tour bus to me.

Sacsayhuaman Visit – Ruins

Sacsayhuamán is an impressive Inca fortress built in the 14th and 15th centuries.  The stones are gigantic and they fit together so tightly that you can’t wedge anything into the seams.  The early Spaniards tried to destroy Inca stonework, but much of Sacsayhuamán was indestructible.  You can wander freely among the stonework ruins.  A couple stone cross beams are still in place and you can walk under them.  Also, you can look down to the city of Cusco close by below.  A short walk from the ruins takes you to Cristo Blanco – the White Christ Statue overlooking the city of Cusco too.  Putting a cross on a hillside was a typical practice by early Spaniards.  It diverted the natives from their practice of honoring mountains by substituting the cross instead.

Puka Pucara Ruins, Sacsayhuaman Visit

Puka Pucara Ruins

Qenqo, Puka Pucara, Tambomachay

After spending about a half hour at Sacsayhuaman, we returned to our waiting cab.  We then sped off to see the other ruins on the road ringing the hillside above Cusco.  It’s easy to visit these sites as they are all located on the main road.  First we stopped at Qenqo.  This site looks like a pile of rubble.  You wander through the stones and then you enter inside a narrow tunnel pathway inside the mound of rocks.  Very cool!

Tambomachay Inca Ruins, Cusco, Sacsayhuaman Visit

Tambomachay Inca Ruins

Next we stopped at Puka Pucara.  The sun lit this small site brightly and we only stayed a couple of minutes.  Our last stop was Tambomachay.  The sun was setting as we walked a short distance to these ruins.  This site is very small.  The stones were stained almost blue or purple in the setting sun.  Each of these three sites are very different from each other.

Taking a cab from Cusco is an excellent way to visit Sacsayhuman, Qenqo, Puka Pucara and Tambomachay.  The next morning we set out on a Maras Moray Day Trip.

How to get to Sacsayhuaman?

If you have been planning a trip to Sacsayhuaman Ruins, you can skip the expensive tour guides and take a Sacsayhuaman self-guided tour instead. You can take the tour in an afternoon and it won’t take you long.

The ruins are not only in Sacsayhuaman, they are also in Puka, Pukara, Qenko, and Tambomachay and are all close to Cusco. You can get to all of these ruins by way of bus, taxi, or you can walk if you are at the Plaza de Armas located in the beautiful Cusco City.

Sacsayhuaman is beautiful with high majestic mountains surrounding it. Once you see it, you will want to return again and again. When you take a self-guided tour of Sacsayhuaman, you will be able to take your time and enjoy the beauty around you.

Check out the guided Cusco City Tour or Horse back Tour of Cusco that covers them all.

How to get to Sacsayhuaman

Taking a Taxi to Sacsayhuaman Ruins

Taking a taxi is going to be the quickest way to travel to Sacsayhuaman Ruins from where you are staying in Cusco. The taxi ride is approximately ten minutes and you will pay around 10 PEN or $2.89 USD.

Taxicab Offers

Taxi drivers may want to offer you a deal to see all four of the ruins at once while they do the driving. Many taxi drivers have a set amount of 40-50 PEN, or $11.56 – $14.45 USD. The advantages to taking this taxi tour is you can see all the ruins for a reasonable price, and you will get to travel with someone who is familiar and can possibly answer questions you may have. You don’t have to worry about getting tired and having to walk back either.

Depending on how many will be in your party if you decide to go with the taxi, you may be able to pay per person instead. If you don’t want to spend the money to see all ruins, you can walk from one to another before needing to call a cab to come and pick you up for the next stop. All ruins can be accessed along the main highway leading to Pisac.

Walking to Sacsayhuaman Ruins

If you choose to walk, you will be starting from Cusco. To walk from Cusco to Sacsayhuaman will take approximately thirty minutes. While you are there, you will have the opportunity to use flights of stairs to get from one place to another inside the ruins. These stairs will take you to high altitudes, but it will be worth it to see all the beauty around.

If you decide to walk it, you will want to start at Plaza de Armas. Walking down the run, you will run into the Cathedral on the right side of the road. From the Cathedral, make a left onto Choquechaka Road. Then take a right onto Atoc-sekuchi Staircase. Once you climb the staircase, you will see the main road. Take a left and walk until you see the Cristo Blanco, Jesus statue.

From the statue, you will want to take the gravel road on the left side of the road. Walk the gravel road through a field until you come upon the entrance to Sacsayhuaman.

8 Free Inca Ruins in Cusco | A Self-Guided Hiking Tour

Cusco Peru and the surrounding valleys are home to an impressive amount of Inca ruins , hidden gems that are scattered along the towering hillsides. Thousands of tourists briefly flock to the Imperial City of Cusco to acclimate for the country’s most famous site of Machu Picchu, but few explore the many sacred treasures that lie within the city itself. Yes, there are a wide range of free Inca ruins in Cusco that are not included on the popular Cusco Tourist Ticket . The best part is that many of these sites are completely empty and authentic, providing an “untouched and special” experience.

These Inca ruins in Cusco are easily accessible from the bustling city itself, only a quick hike into the mountains

The Inca sites on this self-guided hiking tour are different than the well-known Archaeological Parks of Cusco, but it does pass by the famous site of Sacsayhuamán and Q’enqo . For this reason, those visitors who wish to skip Circuit 1 of the Boleto Turístico Cusco may prefer this intrepid and worthwhile hike. Better yet, add in this half day hike while acclimating for Machu Picchu .

Lace up your boots, download the map, and let’s explore some incredible and free Inca ruins in Cusco.

Important Safety Information About This Cusco Day Hike Itinerary

Before tackling this hike, it’s important to be informed of some recent safety issues that have recently come to light in Cusco over the past few years. This free hiking tour passes by and includes a stop at the Temple of the Moon. Sadly, near the Temple of the Moon, there have been recent robberies via knife and gunpoint.

Women should especially be mindful, as there have been reported rapes in the nearby caves. Unfortunately, this area should be avoided at all costs at dusk and at night. Be mindful and always take the necessary safety precautions before attempting this day hike itinerary.

Entrance into the Sacsayhuamán Archaeological Park

Self-guide Day hike Cusco, Sacsayhuamán Archaeological Park, Saqsaywaman, Spanish Kiln, stones, rocks, grass, clouds, sky, path, bridge, trees, sign post, hiking trail, river

This section of the Sacsayhuamán Archaeological Park is oftentimes only visited by locals. This part of the park is free. This is a favorite local spot among Cusqueños (people from Cusco) . In the park, see adults playing soccer, children playing a top of ruins, locals picnicking next to the river, and on sunny days women doing their laundry.

There are some great views of Inca terraces and “La Torta.”

Cross the wooden river bridge and turn to the right. On the left hand side of the bridge, notice an unusual round structure built into a cave. This is actually a Spanish Colonial Kiln used to make terracotta roof shingles.

Distance from Mesa Redonda | 1.5 Miles

The Cake “La Torta”

Remember that cool “cake” that you saw when you first entered the park. Head over and check it out! Start the gradual climb up to the top of the cake. You’ll pass through those lovely terraces. Once at the top, appreciate those incredible views of Cusco, the surrounding Inca ruins, and the small river that trickles through the valley.

There are some nearby remnants of ruins next to the La Torta that are quite interesting. They appear to be built into the caves.

Distance from Mesa Redonda | 2.25 Miles

When ready, head back down the main path and cross the bridge again. Make a right hand turn onto a distinct path and continue towards Inkilltambo , one of the most underrated Inca ruins in Cusco.

Inkilltambo

Keep following the river. Notice another Spanish kiln ruin along the path. Soon, you’ll notice a large Inca site on the right hand side. Welcome to Inkilltambo!

Cross the little footpath bridge and explore this worthwhile site. There is actually a circuit within the park that conveniently twists and turns you through the sacred site. Find many signs (in Spanish) that explain possible theories as to what these Inca ruins in Cusco were used for.

The park has an inviting Inca road, multiple terraces, and remnants that appear to be used for sacred ceremonies. When ready, recross the small bridge and get back on to the original footpath. River Break

bridge, grass, river, woman, sky, clouds, path, trees, shrubs, Day Hike Cusco, self-guided hike Cusco

Less than a half a mile down the path, the trail will come to a wooden bridge. This makes a tranquil spot to rest, snack, picnic, and drink some water. If you have a water filter, replenish from the stream. Do not cross the bridge . Instead, keep it to on your right. Walk a little bit further and start to look for an uphill path to the left. Begin the uphill climb to a serious epic viewpoint!

Distance From Mesa Redonda | Just Under 4 Miles

Inkilltambo 360° Viewpoint

Follow the trail which has an uphill ascent. There should be a clay fence on the left with cactus sprouting out of the top of it. Keep climbing, yeah it can be steep, but those views just keep on getting better! Eventually, look for a wooden stump-like fence, which will be on the left hand side. It’s strung together with a loose barbwire. There is a section of the fence that has been pushed to the ground. Take a left and follow the path until you reach the edge of the cliff. You will pass by some small remains of more Inca ruins.

Continue on the path and reach a spectacular 360 viewpoint°. This epic views includes stunning views of Inkilltambo, the lush valley, the towering mountain of Ausangate , and even more Inca ruins in Cusco that are located on the next hillside. Check out all the surrounding mountains. Breathtaking! (Literally, stop here and catch your breath!)

Distance From Mesa Redonda | 5 Miles

Temple of the Moon “Templo de la Luna”

After those views, continue on the path towards one of the better known free Inca ruins in Cusco, the Temple of the Moon . The Temple of the Moon is another interesting site with unusual ruins and some fascinating caves surrounding it.

After climbing around the Temple of the Moon, keep it to your left. Start looking for the large boulder rocks on the right hand-side. Turn right on a small footpath which leads you towards the boulders. Pass by a large “carved rock.” Keep following this path until you see the magnificent Temple of the Fly .

Safety Tip | Don’t hike this area as a solo traveler

Distance From Mesa Redonda | Almost 6 Miles

Temple of the Fly (Chuspiyoq)

The Temple of the Fly has might just be the most special Inca site in Cusco. There is a beautiful meadow here with a very distinct rock. This sacred place appears to be some sort of ceremonial site. This temple rarely sees visitors. Look back and see distant views of the Temple of the Moon.

Distance From Mesa Redonda | 6.5 Miles

Next, head out the same path towards the Temple of the Moon, but veer towards the right. Walk through a field to meet a dirt road. Temple of the Moon will be in the distance to your left hand side. Continue along on the path until it merges into a paved road.

Look to the left to appreciate the chair-like rock known as “Sillarumiyoq.” Continue on the road and head right towards Q’enqo . Pass by the main site of Q’enqo. Since it’s part of the Cusco Tourist Ticket it’s not included on this free self-guided tour.

Keep Q’enqo to the left and soon see Q’enqo Chico , which is a free and lovely park.

Q’enqo Chico

This large rock formation sits in the middle of a welcoming meadow with mini forest. Q’enqo Chico boasts some epic views of Cusco. Theses Inca ruins in Cusco make for an excellent spot to relax and savor the city views. Notice that there are large Inca building blocks, like those used in the nearby park ticketed section of Sacsayhuamán.

Distance From Mesa Redonda | 7.75 Miles

Next, head back and follow along on the main road (which does have car traffic) . Next, continue towards Christo Blanco , the tall white statue of Jesus. Once on the main road, it’s best to veer to the left to reach this mirador.

Cusco Bucket-List | 43 Spectacular Things to Do in Cusco Peru

Christo Blanco Viewpoint

The viewpoint of Christo Blanco offers up some nice views of Cusco. From here keep the Jesus statue on the right hand-side to head towards Sacsayhuamán.

Distance from Start Point | 8.25 Miles

Continue on the path where you’ll see awesome vistas of the massive and stunning “Inca building blocks” of the main ticketed area of Sacsayhuamán Archaeological Park . When you meet the Inca road, take a left turn, which walks alongside the outskirts of the park. Keep the park to the right and exit from the main entrance gate.

Ending Point | Cusco’s Plaza de Armas

Street Art in Cusco, Pumacurco Street, Art by Yakoart, Indigenous woman of Cusco, heart

After you “exit from the entrance” take the small staircase and walk past a few tiendas. There’s a bathroom here, too, incase you need it. Next, connect with a main road. This is Pumacurco, a steep, yet lovely street that makes for a great photo-op.

Follow along the cobblestone road, past beautiful street art, and plenty of cafes. Soon after, reach the charming Plazoleta de las Nazarenas . This quiet plaza is home to the popular Museo de Arte Precolombino and some nice, yet pricey restaurant options.

Continue on the street and take a right down the street of Córdoba del Tucumán . Walk past the colonial churches, a reminder of the reality of a forceful Spanish conquest. Long before the city was influenced by the Spanish it was the mighty Imperial City of the Inca Empire. Continue walking along the cobblestone streets, past the charming buildings to finally reach the famous Plaza De Armas .

Thanks so much, Nichole! Peru is such a sacred and special place. Hope you can visit in the near future! 🇵🇪

I never knew there are such great historical hiking options around Machu Picchu! I assume a shorter like to La Torta or Inkilltambo and back would be a good warm-up to help acclimate yourself, too. Thanks for the honest advice about safety. Super helpful.

Thanks Courtney! There is so much more to see and do in Cusco and the Sacred Valley on top of Machu Picchu! The best part is, many of the Inca Sacred Sites are free and hardly visited by tourists! These make great “warm-ups” for acclimating! 😉

This is great. I’d love to do a hiking tour like this! Thank you for sharing.
