July 27, 2018 - Many fixed-wing pilots view rotorcraft as difficult to fly and expensive to own and operate, but Safari Helicopter is working to shatter both assumptions at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018 with the display of its Safari 400 and Safari 500 kitbuilt helicopters.

In business under a succession of names for some 60 years, Bobby and Delane Baker bought Safari Helicopter (Ultralight/Rotorcraft Display, Booth 934) in 2009, and “it’s been a hoot ever since,” Bobby said.

The experimental two-place rotorcraft are powered by a 180-hp Lycoming O-360 engine, their frames are 4130 chromoly steel tubing, and cabin shells are carbon fiber. The drive train is gear driven (no belts), the main shaft and spindle are titanium, and the blades are composite carbon fiber and extruded aluminum.

“It’s as close to certified as we can get without being certified,” Bobby said. Customers all over the world use them for “mustering cattle, to take pictures out of, to hunt, all kinds of stuff,” he said.

The kits include the engine, leather seats, carpet, steam gauge instruments, and switches.

“You can put the copter together and go fly and not spend one dime more,” Bobby said. Options for a full glass cockpit and full IFR package are available. “You can get anything you want,” he added, and that includes attachments for a spray system, a cargo hook, floats, side pods, “snow shoes,” and a trailer for ground transport.

With its large bubble canopy over the cabin, the 400 looks like a small Bell 47, while the soon-to-be-available 500, announced two years ago and featuring a carbon fiber tail boom, resembles a Hughes 500. Safari has 11 of the 500 models on order and is taking $1,000 deposits for delivery positions. “When it comes to your slot, if you back out, we’ll give you your $1,000 back,” Bobby said.

Build time for the 400 is about 450 hours, and for the 500 about 450 to 500 hours. Reaction to the products at this year’s show is “better than I’ve seen it since 2008,” he said. “I sold two on Monday, a 500 and 400.”

The Safari 400 kit costs $142,800, and the company is offering the Safari 500 for the same price at the fly-in, but “after the show it’s going up considerably.”

For the next phase of expansion, the Georgia company is “looking for full-service dealers knowledgeable about helicopters [that are] not only willing to sell, but support them as well,” Delane said.

Whether interested in buying or representing the company, visitors can see the Safaris fly at the Ultralight/Rotorcraft Display between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. daily during the fly-in.

New Safari - Safari 500

I’’m happy (and somewhat surprised) to see that the new Safari 500 is in production. What do you think about it? My understanding is that the new 500 is a 400 with a new shell. I think it’s great looking. The engine is a Titan 370-series. Form what I’’ve read (mostly on Van’s Air Force community) this engine seems to be solid. Looking at the Safari 400 safety record it seems that the recent years accidents are related to the tail rotor area. Has this problem been throughly looked into and taken care of?

I hate to say it but I don't think any of the helicopter guys frequent this site anymore. Wish I knew where they went. Personally I prefer the looks of the 400 over the 500. I suppose I'm Ol' fashioned that way. Doesn't really matter tho, they're both well above my price range.

  • Aug 18, 2018

Barney, I've wondered the same thing, guess there just were not that many by comparison, used to watch Brian's progress with great interest but he has stopped posting on his build. There have been a number of accidents as well but more then anything I suspect mean spirited and/or nonconstructive criticism has played the larger role as the real deterrent, people get gun shy. Hopefully not so but that's my guess. EDIT: I like the old school look as well , that is the style I am working on now.

Do you know if there is a owners group or builders forum for the Safari? Safari seems to be a popular kit, must be a lot of builders out there.

I don't know of any current, even the Safari builders forum is silent, there are still a few older build logs that are interesting to look at. http://www.mykitlog.com/Rick

Say what you will about Rotorway, at least there is an active owners forum. There may only be a handful of the group that's familiar with the Scorpion but when I have questions I can get answers. May not always like the answer but their honest and experience based, rather than the old "I heard somewhere" answers. Mine may not be hovering without the help of and what I learned thru reading ROG. It is a shame the Safari (Helicom, Baby Ball) crowd can't do the same. I would love to know more about them than "I hear the tail rotors like to fall off." Oh, and by the way, last time I talked to Brian he was having some trouble with his main gearbox. Been a while now and I don't know that he's been motivated enough to address the issue.

I like the Rotorway, but like the openness of the Helicom (in my case)/Safari style, nice for preflight inspections and general nosing around looking for any issues. The nay-sayers I'm familiar with, for legitimate reason or not seem to have a personal grudge going on. They all have and/or had their problems including certified, none seem to step up and admit fault, who in the world could blame them for that when you think about it. I just don't believe any of them deliberately sell kits with known to be unsafe parts. Hate to hear that about Brians ship, goodness knows how hard he has worked to make it as perfect as possible.

I built a Helicom Commuter II in the early 70's, T/R drive shaft was a center-less ground shaft then, today they simply use a standard section of 4130 tubing, I have wondered if that may cause high frequency vibration. I have seen the pics with the lack of radius issue, should never had been an issue but at least it is now a corrected issue. They enlarged the radius on the main spindle as well. Yeah, the speed is not impressive at all. Your Rotorway does an easy 100mph doesn't it?

I don't want to hijack the thread but thanks Bryan. So did the spindle issue go all the way back to the original Helicom or did it appear later? If it started with the titanium spindles when did they come into play?

‘Workers end up paying the price’: laborers call for safer building sites

Falls, slips and trips accounted for 865 worker fatalities in 2022 – more than 400 of whom worked in construction

W ooden planks with nails covered the site where Antonio, a construction day laborer in Houston, Texas, was helping clear fencing last December. The contractor that hired him provided no protection, he said – so when he slipped, and a nail struck him just above the ankle, it became “really swollen”.

Antonio was given hydrogen peroxide, and the contractor promised to get him medical attention the next day. But after developing a fever overnight, and with his ankle still swollen, he took himself to the emergency room.

Upon arrival, he was told if he had waited much longer, doctors might have needed to amputate his leg below the knee. “I spent about 16 days in the hospital,” Antonio, who requested to omit his last name for fear of retaliation, said.

After two weeks, the contractor – which had not picked up the phone the day after his accident – got in touch. They wanted to know “if I was ready to work”, Antonio said.

His injury was never reported to the proper authorities. He has not received compensation.

The incident was not unusual.

More than 450,000 workers were injured by falls, slips and trips in 2021 and 2022, according to official data, with 865 fatalities recorded in 2022 alone. Of those who died, more than 400 were construction workers, according to the Center for Construction Research and Training.

Employers are required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Osha) to protect workers from falls on the job, by providing guardrails, harnesses, scaffolding and personal safety gear when necessary, and provide training to workers.

“Construction is a dangerous industry, but falls are preventable, 100%,” said Ryan Papariello, safety and health specialist at the Laborers’ Health and Safety Fund of North America. “We know how to prevent these incidents.”

But in many cases where injuries and fatalities of workers occur, basic Osha protections are not being followed, or implemented at all.

“Probably the most important to me is a general awareness of the job site, what’s going on around you, and the confidence to be able to stand up and say, ‘Stop, this is unsafe,’” said Anton Ruesing, executive director of the International Finishing Trades Institute. “A lot of workers don’t feel comfortable enough to say, ‘Hold on a second, that’s unsafe, and I’m not going to do that.’”

Antonio, for example, claimed he and other workers were not given proper breaks or enough water on the job, and had little recourse because if they speak up, they won’t be able to get work again.

“These contractors mislead you and lie about the job, they lie about the pay and end up paying less than the amount they promised,” he said. “They take advantage of us and that’s how they are lining their pockets, by abusing people like us.”

While Osha regularly issues citations and penalties in cases where a worker is killed on the job and safety protocols were not followed or implemented, its fines have been criticized as being too low to deter bad behavior by employers.

Legislation to modernize the federal agency in charge of protecting workers, including the expansion of its coverage to 24 states not currently covered, has stalled in Congress.

“Workers die and get injured when management basically fails to provide a safe workplace,” said Jessica Martinez, co-executive director of the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health. “Doing a job safely in construction and other industries requires time, money, management, attention and other resources. So when management decides not to spend that time, money and attention, then workers end up paying the price.”

“We’ve come a long way, but we still have a ways to go,” said Ruesing. “The fact that deaths and fatalities are figured into a job in terms of costs and insurance, it’s still disgusting.”

Gabriel Strathern fell to his death while working on a roofing job in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was 29.

Osha fined his employer on the job, the roof and window cleaning firm Squeaky Clean, about $17,000 for failing to provide fall protection or sufficient safety training.

During separate legal proceedings, the owner of Squeaky Clean, James Crisp, was asked why he had not reported Strathern’s death to Osha. “I didn’t know that I was required to,” he said, according to a copy of a deposition obtained by the Guardian.

Gabriel Strathern with son in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Devin Gilgor, Strathern’s father, said: “A month before, Gabriel had fallen off a roof, but hadn’t sustained any serious injuries and when he asked about reporting the incident to Osha, his employer told him, ‘We don’t do Osha.’

“They knew this house was very dangerous, because the roof pitch was at a peak angle and he still wasn’t given any fall protection equipment.”

Gilgor explained that he was the one who reported the incident to Osha the next day, and that to this day he has never received a phone call or apology from his son’s employer.

The fines paid by Squeaky Clean, and other employers found in breach of the rules, are not enough, according to Gilgor. “When a death or permanent disability occurs on the job, the ability of an employer to negotiate fines should not be an option,” he said. “Not only civil but criminal charges need to be pursued. Avoiding workplace accidents should be our main focus.

“Employers need to be made aware of Osha regulations. Employees need to be made aware of their rights to a safe work environment and Osha needs to come up with better ways to reach the workplace.”

Squeaky Clean and an attorney representing Crisp did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

LeBron XXI Basketball Shoes

Select Size

Last time around, LeBron flipped the script on his shoe game as only the King can. The encore is even better. The LeBron XXI has a cabling system that works with Air Zoom cushioning and a light, low-to-the-ground design, giving you agile fluidity without excess weight. Created for your ascent and the next generation of hoopers, it’s ideal for Bron-like open-floor attacks and rising toward the rim when the game’s pace turns up. For this special design we dove to the bottom of the sea, drawing inspiration from the oyster cultivation process. The glow-in-the-dark outsole takes it cues from the vibrant organisms dwelling about the ocean floor.

Daughter Driven

LeBron is the shield for his daughter, who helped the King grow as a man and softened him as a dad. He feels the need to protect her always, the same way an oyster shelters a pearl to reach its full potential. Exposed construction on the side of the heel gives a shell-like appearance. The perforated foam tongue is quilted, also imitating a shell’s appearance and providing a plush feel.

Cloaked and Contained

We reinforced the lightweight mesh with a 360-degree zonal cabling system for optimal containment. We disguised it all by a premium, lightweight drapery for a cloaked finishing touch.

Soften the Rise

An Air Zoom unit in the heel and forefoot supports landing and gives you a propulsive feeling. We paired them with a soft, springy foam to help ensure a pillowy feel.

Stay Refreshed

Dimensional mesh on the upper is durable and contained. Using lightweight materials, we striated the upper's venting to look like the veining of a shell, helping contain you during quick movements. Zonal perforations in the sandwich mesh and ventilation on both sides provide breathability.

Steady and Sturdy

A top-loaded strong plastic shank helps keep you steady and gives you a better snap when exploding.

2024 würth 400 prop bets: nascar odds, picks for cup racing at dover.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Alex Bowman has five top-five finishes at Dover, including an outright win in 2021.

Dover Motor Speedway is the site of this week’s NASCAR Cup Series race. You can watch the Würth 400 live on FS1 at 2 p.m. ET on Sunday.

Last season, Martin Truex Jr. captured his fourth career win at Dover. Truex held off a late charge from Ross Chastain to capture his first victory of 2023. Both drivers are among the favorites on Sunday.

Tyler Reddick aims to become the first driver to win back-to-back races in 2024. Reddick surged ahead after a final lap crash to win last week at Talladega.

How should you approach the Würth 400? Check out my favorite prop bets for Sunday’s Cup Series race.

NASCAR Cup Series:  Würth 400 prop bets

Driver matchup: bubba wallace over joey logano (+120, bet365 ).

Every great driver has one track that gives them issues. Joey Logano is a two-time Cup Series Champion, but Dover has always given him trouble.

If we focus on the two races in the Next-Gen era at Dover, Logano has been terrible. He has a pair of finishes outside the top 25, and his speed ranking is 25th among 33 drivers.

Bubba Wallace hasn’t been great at Dover but has three straight finishes between 11th and 16th. That may not seem great, but that could get the job done with Logano’s struggles at Dover.

This is an excellent way to fade Logano for Sunday’s race at Dover.

Alex Bowman to win Group G (+220, Caesars )

Alex Bowman is quietly having a good season, recording four top-five finishes in 10 races. This week should bring out the best in Bowman, as he’s had a ton of success at the Monster Mile.

Over his last six starts at Dover, Bowman has five top-five finishes. That includes a victory in the 2021 race, leading the final 98 laps.

He’ll face Logano, Chris Buescher and Tyler Reddick for this bet. We’ve discussed Logano’s struggles, while Reddick and Buescher have never finished better than eighth at Dover.

We should see top-five speed from Bowman as he finishes ahead of Reddick, Buescher and Logano.

Chase Elliott has two wins and nine top-five Cup Series finishes this season.

Top Chevy: Chase Elliott (+600, DraftKings )

The Chevy contingent will be tough on Sunday, with Kyle Larson, Ross Chastain and William Byron making up the race favorites. However, I’d keep an eye on Chase Elliott.

Elliott had been building momentum and finally found victory lane two weeks ago. He heads to a Dover track with two wins and nine top-five finishes. He won the first Next-Gen race at Dover, leading 72 laps in the 2022 race.

That marked the third time he’s led 70+ laps in his Dover career. I’m not saying we’ll see another dominant performance, but he has the potential.

Larson and Chastain are properly priced as the favorites, but Elliott shouldn’t be +600. I love the value of him leading the Chevy camp at Dover.

Winning car number: 0-9 (+135, Caesars )

I talked about Elliott (No. 9) as a top contender in the Chevy camp. Well, we have two other Chevy drivers in this group with Chastain (No. 1) and Larson (No. 5).

Chastain is No. 1 in speed ranking at Dover over the last two races. He led 86 and 98 laps, finishing third and second, respectively.

If you take out last year’s race, Larson has four straight finishes of sixth or better at Dover. He had the car to beat in 2021, leading 263 of 400 laps. There’s no doubt he’ll be a top contender on Sunday.

Kyle Busch (No. 8) and Brad Keselowski (No. 6) are past Dover winners. The key drivers to watch for are Chastain, Larson, and Elliott.
