Introduction
Safariland Holtz has been in operation in Namibia since 1934. The business stocks the largest selection of Safari clothing in the country and specializes in large sizes.
Having outlets in Windhoek and Swakopmund, they can gear you from head to toe. Dress the part - It looks great in pictures and is highly functional.
Olive green, tan, khaki and light brown colors act as camouflage in most landscapes and as such are less likely to attract attention from the animals, increasing the chances of close encounters with wildlife. This advice is even more important for walking excursions, offered at many better lodges, when you’re out of the vehicle and observing the flora and fauna on foot.
There’s another reason to leave dark colors, such as blue, purple, black and your jeans at home: they attract insects, and mosquito borne diseases including malaria is among the most serious health risks you will encounter on your safari through certain parts of Namibia.
In addition to color, pay attention to the weight and comfort of the clothes, as well as sleeve and pant leg length; wicking fabrics are a good choice - they keep you comfortable in hot (or cold) weather. Long sleeve shirts and pants will provide more sun and bug protection than short sleeves and shorts or skirts.

Best safari clothing: brands, clothes & tips for African safaris
You’re off on safari! You’ve done all the research , purchased the guide books , and the tickets are hot in your hand.
But most importantly, you’re getting ready to pack your ultra-light bag with everything you’ll need for your trip of a lifetime.
You’ve read all the advice you can handle (perhaps even this post on how to pack for safaris for your African bush adventure).
But when it comes down to the line, you still have no idea whether your favorite sweater is going to be a help or a hindrance, if you should pack jeans, how many pairs of socks are enough, and what on earth to expect once you are out in the wild.
What to wear on safari is something of a conundrum , the answer to which is entirely dependent on whether you are a complete slave to fashion and constantly worry about your appearance.
Or whether you don’t care if your trousers absolutely match your shirt and if your shoes co-ordinate properly with your camera bag.
So, in a bid to help sort the wheat from the chaff when it comes to safari style, this guide aims to highlight the best safari clothing brands and tips for your next trip to Africa .
African Safari Clothes: 7 Useful Tips
The African savanna has seen virtually every take on both the best and worst dressed safari goers , including some of the most practical and impractical safari gear around.
This includes everything from haute couture animal prints hot off the Milan catwalk, to Prada stilettos getting stuck in between the slats of wooden decks, and $300 silk scarves ripped to shreds by thorn bushes.
There are also tales of wild baboons getting hold of Victoria’s Secret lingerie and leaving it draped for all to see high in the branches of an acacia tree.
There are plenty of stories about complete wardrobe disasters—but to ensure you’re not one of them, here is a list of useful tips on how to dress for safaris .
1. Leave the luxury safari clothing at home
Lesson 1 in safari style is to NEVER take your best clothes into the bush .
If you find a pair of shorts, trousers, or a top you love and know that it would break your heart to have it ruined on safari, it’s probably best to leave it at home .
Instead, look for clothing that is specifically suited for the wild . And if the item comes in different colors, buy the range!
This way, over the years, you’ll acquire a variety of clothes which come everywhere with you. Look out for clothes that you can team together to create practical yet stylish outfits.
2. Keep your clothes for safari simple
Lesson 2 is learning how many of each item you will need . As a rule of thumb, always go with four of the basics.
Four pairs of shorts , four pairs of cut-off pants , four string vests , four t-shirts , four pairs of long pants , four button-through shirts (two of which are long-sleeved), four sets of underwear , four pairs of socks … you get the drift, I am sure!
When traveling in winter or during the colder months of the year, add to this scenario two lightweight long-sleeve t-shirts and two knitted sweaters , plus two fleeces or warm jackets , thermal long johns , gloves , a scarf , and a beanie .
When considering your safari apparel, ALWAYS pack a swimsuit and a couple of sarongs/kikoys . Even in the winter, it’s usually warm enough to suntan during the day and sometimes even swim.
3. Your safari wear should include comfortable shoes
Lesson 3 concerns footwear . In the heat of the summer, it is best to pack at least two pairs of “bush slops” – flip flops (thongs) which are heavy-duty, waterproof, and good enough to handle walking in the light bush for game drives.
You may also need two or three pairs of fashionable flip-flops or sandals for around camp and evening meals, and a pair of good walking shoes ( Merrells ) for walking safaris.
In the winter, replace the walking shoes with walking boots and add a pair of lightweight faux-fur lined “trendy” flat boots for evening wear.
4. Safari fashion: accessories
Accessorize – that’s the key to lesson 4 – it’s the difference between a good safari wardrobe and a bad one. Two or three lightweight colored scarves and/or wraps are a must in any safari bag .
Usually, they have beadwork or applique of some description on them. These are useful for dressing up even the most conservative safari outfit—great if you’re looking to add a dash of glamor to your evening meals. Team them up with a couple of great “ethnic” bead necklaces and earrings .
Another essential item to include with your safari attire is a hat —and these can most certainly be fun. Pack in a couple of lightweight, floppy straw sun-hats, as these are great for game drives or tiger fishing.
Another good option is the usual peak baseball-style caps.
5. What to wear on safari – quality
Lesson 5 is all about quality . Everything you take into the bush with you needs to stand the test of time.
This includes the elements of the African wild, the rigors of hand-washing, and bumping and grinding in the back of a safari vehicle halfway across Africa.
So it’s important to check your clothes before you pack to make sure they can be hand-washed, aren’t going to fall apart the first time you wear them, and are not likely to fade too drastically when hung in the sun to dry.
The material of your clothing is also important. When out in the wild, it is best to stick to strong natural materials like hemp , linen , leather , and wool .
Nylon and polyester also tend to provide adequate protection against the elements.
6. Best safari clothing brands
Wondering where to buy safari clothes? Most of the high-street fashion chains carry good quality fashionable safari clothes which will stand up to the average safari conditions.
As such, you may be able to avoid the need to go to specialist outfitters and camping/outdoor stores where things tend to cost a lot more.
And, of course, the big brands like Jeep (a favorite with safari goers because their clothes are practical, hard-wearing, and pretty at the same time) and Cat always have some great clothes for safaris—including some of the best safari shirts.
In addition to these, here are several more reliable brands to consider when buying safari clothes:
- Columbia — this is a good option for those seeking affordable safari clothing that is still good quality.
- First Ascent — if you’re buying safari clothes in South Africa, keep an eye out for this brand as it offers some excellent quality clothing.
- Patagonia — while the brand is more expensive, they provide some of the highest quality outdoor clothing and gear on the market.
- REI — if you’re shopping online, REI is often the go-to for outdoor gear. Their house brand is affordable and offers many items that will serve you well on your safari.
- Ruggedwear — proudly South African, it is an official partner of the Field Guides Association of Southern Africa (FGASA).
- Sapmok — footwear for every adventure. Comfy. Durable. And stylish.
7. What color clothing for African safaris
Finally, lesson 7 concerns white . Do you take white clothes into the bush with you? Hell yes.
As long as you don’t expect them to remain white for long and can accept the fact that no matter where you wear them, they’re bound to get a little dirty. It’s more or less a bush essential in my book because it reflects sunlight , keeps you cool and goes with everything .
Everyone says, “don’t wear white on a safari vehicle,” – but this is far from the truth. However, white isn’t the only color that’s good for safaris.
When dressing for safaris, the basic color range is simple: khaki , beige , white, and brown (or variations thereof).
Avoid black and blue during the day because they attract tsetse flies .
But do occasionally take these colors for evening wear when the tsetses have gone to bed.
What to Wear on an African Safari: Checklist
Now that you’re all clued up with what to consider when deciding what clothes to wear on a safari, it’s time to pack.

What to Wear in Namibia
Top style tips for namibia.
- Casual, comfortable clothes are the key. Dress down rather than up here.
- During the day it is hot, so our advice is to pack lightweight loose-fitting clothes in natural fabrics such as linen, bamboo and cotton that will keep you cool and are easier to wash and dry.
- The difference between daytime and night time temperatures is significant. Temperatures can plummet during the night, particularly in the cooler months. During June, July and August temperatures can drop to as low as 45 degrees F (7C). Be prepared with plenty of warm layers and a warm travel jacket. The SCOTTeVEST travel jacket is a good option as it is specifically designed for travel, with plenty of storage for gadgets and valuables.
- We suggest keeping to light, neutral colours ; think khaki, green and brown. Not white, as it will get dirty and dusty very quickly.
- But it is very important to avoid camouflage or military clothing or prints, as this is illegal.
- Avoid blue or black clothing too – the tsetse flies are drawn to these colours, and their bite can give you African Sleeping Sickness.
- Long trousers and long-sleeved tops will cover you from the harsh sun and protect against mosquitoes at night.
- A wide brimmed sunhat and lots of sunscreen (we love the Riemann P20 range for 10 hour protection) and sunblock are essential, as is insect/mosquito repellent .
- When on safari , the idea is to relax and enjoy your time under the African sky, and listen to the calls of the wild all around you! Dinner dress is therefore casual and comfortable.
Shoes to pack for Namibia
- If you plan to do much walking, either on safari or with a backpack, then lightweight walking shoes or trainers are fine . The bush is not always smooth and even, so anything that minimises the chance of a twisted ankle is a good idea. Try Hotter shoes , they are amazingly light and comfortable.
Clothing tips for women
- Leave your valuables and jewellery at home, you really won't need them.
- A skirt or loose-fitting trousers are good in the heat and will protect you from the sun.
- A pashmina or sarong is a versatile item that you can use for sun protection or to ‘glam' up the simplest of outfits if you feel like a change.
Clothing tips for men
- There are no specific things to bring to your attention, check out our packing list for our suggested capsule wardrobe.
Pack for the weather
- This is a semi-desert climate – so it's hot during the day and cold at night.
- Whenever you travel you will need warm clothes for the evenings – add in a fleece, pashmina or jumper. light wool is a good choice to wear against your skin as it naturally helps to regulate your body temperature . It keeps you warm in the cold, wicks away moisture when it's hot, and doesn't retain odours – even after prolonged wear.
- We love the Weather+ app – it gives an accurate 6 day forecast for day and night, which when you're planning from home is really helpful. You can keep all the places you've been to too – a nice way to remember your trip 🙂 Download for iPad/iPhone or Android
Regions of Namibia
- If your budget can stretch to it, take a balloon ride over the Namib desert .
Other things to pack
- A soft-sided rucksack is more practical than a hard suitcase for safari holidays – it's easier to fit into the small planes or transfer vehicles. Using packing cubes can help to keep your belongings tidy whilst compressing the volume too.
- Internal flights often have much lower baggage limits than your international carrier. Use an accurate luggage scale to ensure you keep within the weight allowance.
- Pack a sling bag or lightweight day sack for sightseeing trips and game drives.
- You may like to carry a solar powered charger too, to boost your battery when out and about – you don't want to miss that great photo opportunity!
- To use electrical gadgets you may need a travel adapter plug , and also a step down voltage converter if your devices are not designed for the local voltage (220V) .
- Don’t drink or even brush your teeth in tap water . Consider taking a LifeStraw Filtration Water Bottle .
- Avoid paying unexpected baggage fees – use an accurate luggage scale to ensure you keep within the weight allowance. Don't forget to leave room for souvenirs on the way home! You'll find a range of wooden carvings , woven baskets , bead work and the like. The craft centre in Windhoek is an excellent place to browse.

The perfect stay in Windhoek
Stay in a Windhoek luxury hotel for a night or two, a great place to start or end your Namibia safari
A night in Windhoek is recommended at the start or end of a Namibia holiday . Its a compact urban centre where there is sufficient on offer to keep visitors busy for a day or two.
You could visit Katatura township and the Xwama cultural village on a private Windhoek tour. For some shopping, there is the Town Square Mall, Levinson Arcade and Wernhil Centre. There is a good selection of restaurants and bars. In the eastern part of the city, Klein Windhoek, is Bougain Villias Shopping Centre, with its arts and craft shops and cafes. Also in Klein Windhoek is the 12ha National Botanical Garden, where you can see an excellent selection of the country's endemic flora.
Galleries and museums worth trying to incorporate a visit to include Alte Feste and State Museum, where you can gain an insight into Namibia's history. Look out for the display on rock art and beadwork. The National Art Gallery may be worth a stop for its exhibition of Namibian art.

Safari Gear
When packing for your African Safari you will be tempted to bring a lot of safari gear with. Please remember that you will be doing a lot of packing and unpacking when moving from one camp to another so try and bring as little luggage as possible.
Also try and use a lightweight suitcase or soft bag.
If you are staying in the expensive private lodges there will be a porter to carry your bags but if you are doing a self-drive safari you will be carrying your own bags.
At some of the Kgalagadi Wilderness camps and the Kruger bush lodges like Boulders, the tourism assistant / camp manager does help carry your luggage, but this is not the norm!
These are the key items of safari clothing that we pack…
• Safari Footwear • Safari Hats • Safari Jackets • Safari Pants • Safari Shirts • Safari Vest / Photo vest
• Socks – we wear hiking socks with our boots
• Swimming costume - if you want to swim in the pools
• Tracksuit – for evenings or for sleeping in
• Underwear
Our main tip here is that you should pack light! You can always wash a few clothes along the way.
Where can you purchase your safari gear?
In South Africa there are a few stores that stock comfortable cotton shirts, shorts, pants, jackets and hats such as Cape Union Mart , Outdoor Warehouse and the Kruger shops in the larger camps like Skukuza, Lower Sabie, Satara, Berg en Dal and Mopani.
The Powder Keg in Florida North, Johannesburg, carries a wide range of Courteney boots, jackets, T-shirts, hiking socks, shorts and photo vests.
In Namibia you can try Safariland Holtz in Windhoek as the Etosha shops keep minimal stock of safari clothing.
If you want to buy your safari clothing before arriving in Southern Africa then you should try Orvis or Cabela's .
These companies sell the items as 'hunting clothing' so don't be offended when visiting them. We are against trophy hunting but these products are among the best for safari conditions.

Your wild Namibia safari awaits
Namibia is one of the most unique and lesser known safari destinations of Africa. Whilst the Namib desert and famous sand dunes are frequently visited by travellers from across the globe, there are a multitude of incredible experiences in Namibia that provide ample reason to plan a trip solely to this destination, or combine it with your visit to other destinations in Southern Africa.
Namibia is also famous for self drive safaris due to the good road system and relatively small size of the country, self drive and 4x4 enthusiasts have a deep affinity for the sceninc dunes and drives that Namibia offers to those that grace their shores. Short stay fly in safaris are also an option for those that are simply looking for a taste of the destination or are limited on time.
Highlights:
- Hot air ballooning over the Namib desert
- Sossusvlei sand dune exploration
- Quad biking in the namib desert
- Whales, seals and dolphins off the coast
Namibia is a great year-round destination, but the best game viewing, especially in the Etosha National Park, is from May to October whenthe weather is clear and dry and wildlife flock to watering holes. From November to April, some days will be humid and rain may follow, often in afternoon thunderstorms. It can be trickier to see animals as they tend to scatter then and not congregate around watering holes.
Traveller tip: Make sure you have adequate sun protection, even in the winter months. So pack a hat and lots of sunblock!
A Modern City with a Rich Heritage
With its location right next to the international airport, Windhoek is a friendly, safe and clean capital city to set up base. Windhoek has a range of high-end hotels, boutique hotels, and small lodges to check-in to before starting out on a Namibia adventure.
Must see: The National Museum of Namibia and St. Mary’s Catholic Church which is still active

Botswana Experience
Anja, our agent, was very kind and helpful all the time to organize the perfect trip. She did it quickly and efficiently. The amount of days we spent in every place was perfect to really enjoy the hotels and the different activities they proposed (in general the hotels are very nice but we don’t have the time to really experience the place but here we did). Also the selections of hotels was very very nice. Nice infrastructure, excellent service (very professional) and outstanding places to visit (all the parks were great). We had a wonderful experience with the company in Botswana.

Keith was extremely helpful during the booking process. He is the only reason I continued the booking process with your firm. There were issues with your website among other things that had me feeling uncomfortable. Keith has great energy which eased my concerns. I feel the package Keith put together is great and I expect to have a wonderful trip.
