Calling all Selenators! This is not a drill: Selena Gomez just seemingly dropped a major hint at an upcoming tour through a fan interaction online. This tour would mark her first since her Revival tour in 2016, which she  cut short .

After confirming that she was working on new music, Gomez apparently surprised her fans, who had anticipated her return to the music stage. One fan page published  an Instagram post  with Selena’s past tour looks with the caption: “Selena Gomez on tour (part 1).” To their surprise, the “Come & Get It” singer replied: “Can’t wait for tour 😍.” Afterward, she left another comment: “Should I go this year or next? Feel like I should wait.”

A Twitter user  wrote : “The new Selena Gomez comments about going on Tour it’s what keeps me alive.” Another Twitter user  wrote : “Wey, if Selena Gómez does a tour and comes to Mexico, I’ll sell my life to the highest bidder… “pero de que voy a verla la voy a ir a ver (but if I’m going to see her, I’m going to see her).”

As far as music goes, her latest music release was “My Mind & Me,”  alongside her intimate documentary.  She also released “Calm Down,” a collaboration with Rema in 2022. Her last EP release was the Spanish-language  Revelación  in 2021, and her last album was  Rare  in 2020.

In an  interview  last year, she said: “I’m open to a tour, one thousand percent, but I obviously have obligations and things I wanna do, so when the time’s right. It’s not [at] the top of my priority list.”

Is the actress and singer finally ready to give it a go? Whether or not she’s going on tour this year, we’re excited to listen to any new music she has planned. We’ll keep an eye out for further details.

How Selena Gomez embraced her Mexican heritage as ‘a source of healing’

Selena Gomez is not particularly famous for starting fights — but she’s happy to finish them.

Flanked by cameras and assistants sporting plastic face shields, Gomez has spent the past few weeks walking the streets of Manhattan in a shaggy, rust-colored coat, filming scenes for the Hulu original series “Only Murders in the Building,” a show inspired by true crime podcasts and helmed by comedy greats Steve Martin and Martin Short.

The guys make rather distracting costars for Gomez — “I can barely get through a tape because they’re making me laugh the entire time,” she says — but more distracting are the paparazzi, who, after having a slow year during the COVID-19 pandemic, now trail the 28-year-old superstar doggedly across the city. It was finally on one afternoon in late February when Gomez broke character to throw a middle finger at a cheeky paparazzo on the street. “Somebody was being disrespectful,” she tells The Times. “And I don’t do well with that.”

Seated by the window of her New York apartment, Gomez appears via video call in a red flannel button-up shirt and gold hoops, which sharpen the edges of her soft, seraphic profile. “Look, I am a very modest person, until you disrespect people,” she says. “Maybe [it wasn’t] my best moment, but a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do. And I felt very OK with being like …. ‘Don’t talk to people that way!’”

Gomez has spent the better part of her life taking command over her voice, whether on screen, in song or in her personal life.

The 28-year-old first made her name as a child star of beloved shows like “Barney & Friends” and the Disney Channel series “Wizards of Waverly Place” — then set her kiddie credentials aflame by appearing in Harmony Korine’s 2012 arthouse romp, “Spring Breakers,” cueing her pivot to more PG-13 roles as well as executive producer credits on hot-button shows like “ 13 Reasons Why .”

Selena Gomez & the Scene

Her music career followed the same trajectory in 2012, when she left behind her bubblegum rock band the Scene to cut it as a one-woman act, turning over maximalist dance-floor cuts in 2013’s “Stars Dance” and 2015’s “Revival.” Parting ways with off-and-on flame Justin Bieber, plus a self-imposed mental health sabbatical, helped shape 2020’s “Rare,” her first album in five years and her third consecutive album to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

Gomez had just begun to celebrate this milestone when, not two months after her album release, the pandemic drove the whole world indoors for the majority of 2020. Quarantine was a familiar experience for Gomez, who spent years in and out of treatment centers for anxiety and depression; in 2015 she was diagnosed with lupus, a long-term autoimmune disease, that forced her to both undergo chemotherapy and obtain a kidney transplant in 2017. Though now in remission, Gomez duly took refuge in her Los Angeles home, where she hunkered down with her grandparents and best friends for months. As the pandemic wound on, Gomez turned her house into a makeshift office space for her cosmetics line, Rare Beauty; a television set for her HBO Max cooking show, “ Selena + Chef ,” and a recording studio for her first-ever Spanish-language EP, “Revelación,” or “Revelation,” due out March 12.

“The Spanish record wouldn’t have happened had I just kept going with the pace of my life and all my other commitments,” she explains. “A few years ago I would have never had taken these opportunities because of my insecurities or things that I was dealing with mentally. It helped me change my outlook — being able to say ‘If it doesn’t happen right now, that’s OK. That just means it’ll be later or whenever.’”

“It’s nice to be in a place where I feel lucky and grounded and really happy to just be working,” she says.

On “Rare,” Gomez delivered soul-baring pop confessionals like “ Lose You to Love Me ,” singing self-possessed verses with the reverent lilt of a choirgirl. But on “Revelación,” Gomez evolves into a sensuous tropical siren, swaying both her body and voice to match the rhythm of the ocean tides. Wearing a sumptuous floral gown, and a sacred heart radiating from her chest, Gomez debuted her video for the reggaeton-flavored guitar ballad, “De Una Vez,” in February — building on the same intimate triumphs of “Rare” but for a Spanish-speaking audience.

“Sé que el tiempo a tu lado cortó mis alas / Pero ahora este pecho es antibalas,” she sings, walking her buoyant melody along with the unhurried rhythm of dembow. “I know the time by your side cut my wings / But now this chest is bulletproof.”

It’s an intriguing career pivot for Gomez, who was born and raised in a town called Grand Prairie, on the outskirts of Dallas. Her father, Ricardo Joel Gomez, and her mother, Mandy Teefey, were teenage lovers who went their separate ways when she was 5. Gomez stayed with her mom, an Anglo-American of Italian descent, yet Gomez retained a connection to her Mexican heritage by sharing weekends, holidays and quinceañeras with her father, whose parents first migrated to Texas from Monterrey, Mexico, during the 1970s. “It took 17 years for my grandparents to get citizenship,” says Gomez.

Despite picking up Spanish from her Mexican side of the family, Gomez rarely recorded original songs in the language. Whether featuring on DJ Snake’s 2018 club smash with Ozuna and Cardi B, “ Taki Taki ,” or opposite J Balvin in 2019 on Tainy and Benny Blanco’s “ I Can’t Get Enough ,” Gomez deferred most of the Spanish-language lyrics to her Latinx costars.

Selena Gomez performs.

“I didn’t think I was ready to make a record in Spanish,” she professes. “I was fluent in Spanish until I started working at 7. Then my job just kinda took over my life.”

It was when producing “ Living Undocumented ,” a 2019 Netflix docuseries that shadows eight immigrant families living in the United States — not to mention hearing the harmful, anti-immigrant rhetoric that circulated during the 2020 presidential election — that Gomez started to see her waning Spanish fluency not as a barrier but as an opportunity for connection. “Maybe embracing that part of me can be a source of healing for somebody else,” she says.

A textured blend of American R&B, electro-pop and reggaeton, “Revelación” features her second collaboration with DJ Snake as well as duets with up-and-coming Puerto Rican MCs Myke Towers and Rauw Alejandro . The six-song EP was overseen by Tainy, the Grammy-nominated producer behind hits by Bad Bunny, J Balvin and most recently Dua Lipa. A native of Puerto Rico and lifelong scholar of reggaeton, Tainy has fashioned his own eclectic take on the island’s homegrown sound — which has not only been absorbed by Latin pop at large but has flourished on the U.S. Billboard charts, extending its shelf life well past the mania surrounding Daddy Yankee and Luis Fonsi’s 2017 crossover success, “ Despacito .”

“The Latin community is so versatile,” says Tainy, who collaborated with Gomez over a series of video calls from his studio in Miami. “We’re all from different places, but we inspire each other. Selena can be very humble, but she knows the culture, she knows the sound and she has the range.”

Wary of being the Chicana interloper in a predominantly Caribbean genre, Gomez wanted to connect with her Hispanic fans through the music they love but remain sensitive to the cultural distinctions between Latinos. Prior to recording “Revelación,” she hired Spanish-language coach Leyla Hoyle-Guerrero — who also counts Demi Lovato and Gwen Stefani as clientele — to help freshen her Spanish vocabulary and loosen her accent to better roll with the music.

“There’s a lot of slang that I needed to learn,” says Gomez of the coaching sessions, which became a crash course on unlearning the formal, dated Spanish of her elders. “Spanish changes generationally as well as [geographically]. Sometimes I was like, ‘Wait! Hang on! I need to understand!’

“There would be moments where I would end the [recording] session because I would get so frustrated,” Gomez admits. “Not just trying to create an album from my basement ... but making it sound authentic. That’s something that requires meticulous care. But now, I think I actually sound better in Spanish than I do in English.”

Selena Gomez.

Gomez’s namesake, the late Tejana pop queen Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, suffered a similar identity crisis for years before her untimely death at 23. Though long derided by both Anglos and Mexicans south of the border, Quintanilla-Pérez, who spoke with a Texan twang and notoriously fumbled through her own interviews in Spanish, worked to legitimize the hybrid sound of Tejano music, as both a Latin and North American folk tradition. Gomez has always felt the magnitude of the elder Selena’s legacy, especially as a relative newcomer in the Latin pop space. “It’s an honor to carry her name,” says Gomez.

Selena died when Gomez was two, but, she explains, “her spirit never left my family.” Gomez recalls multiple trips to the Selena memorial in Corpus Christi and met the Quintanilla family before singing “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” live at the Houston Rodeo in 2010. But her fondest Selena memory by far was when she and her grandmother made a kid-friendly replica of the star’s famous bedazzled bustier. “I used to have this bathing suit,” says Gomez. “My grandmother helped me dye it black and we glued a ton of sequins to the top. I wore it with my jeans, then we found a hat and earrings to dress it up. That’s just what little girls in Texas do.”

As soon as it’s safe again, Gomez has set her sights on South America for her first post-pandemic tour. It’s a bucket list item for the star, who previously canceled the Latin American leg of her “Revival” tour in 2016, citing depression and exhaustion caused by lupus. “South America’s where I would start, because we missed it last time, and because that’s where my heart is,” she says.

 Selena Gomez and Aaron Dominguez

Gomez has long grown bored by the ceaseless gossip surrounding her every celebrity interaction and as a result, leaves all social media for her team to manage these days. But after a quiet year, dating rumors were sparked online once again when Gomez was photographed arm in arm with her “Murders” costar Aaron Dominguez. They were filming a scene, she says; but the photos, however innocuous, stirred members of her ride-or-die fanbase dubbed the Selenators. The fans barraged Dominguez’s Instagram account with hostile posts, some of which he highlighted for laughs on his page. “Boy stay the f— away from Selena!” read one message.

“We had just started working together,” she says of Dominguez, shaking her head. “I honestly thought, ‘No wonder guys don’t want to date me!’ I think people only care because I’m young, and the older I get the less they’ll care. For now it’s a part of the job that I don’t really like. I’m actually grateful that I’m not involved with anyone right now.”

One can’t help but think of Britney Spears, whose lifetime of overexposure, not to mention her ongoing legal battle for autonomy, recently came up for review in the documentary, “ Framing Britney Spears .” Spears was the first artist Gomez saw live in concert; Gomez’s rhythmic vocal flourishes can be traced back to Spears, who in turn, enjoys dancing to Gomez’s songs on Instagram. Out of solidarity for Spears, Gomez declined to watch the documentary.

“I’ve seen so much, and it feels violating for me to watch something like that,” says Gomez. “I couldn’t even imagine. I have nothing but sympathy for her, and I’m happy as long as she is healthy and happy.”

If there is anything to be decoded from Gomez’s “Revelación,” beyond the lyrics themselves, it’s that defining the contours of her identity — apart from a job title, a relationship or a birthplace — will be a lifelong journey and only for her to steer. Once the scene is wrapped, the sun goes down and the relentless pinging of her phone subsides, Gomez can exhale and take comfort in knowing at least she’s the one behind the wheel.

“I don’t have all the answers. There’s no moment when I’m like, ‘OK, guys, I’m healed from everything!’” she says. “It’ll always be a roller coaster. I’m just figuring out what track I want to be on.”

Selena Gomez Talks Embracing Her Mexican Heritage on ‘Revelación,’ Greatest Hits & Using Her Social Media Platform for Good

"I am thankful I waited though because it would have been a completely different project 10 years ago," Gomez told GRAMMY.com about her Spanish EP ‘Revelación.' The album is a "Thank you" to her Latinx fans, the singer added.

After successfully transitioning from Disney Channel star to chart-topping pop singer for over a decade now, Selena Gomez has set her eyes on new ground to break in her career: the Latin music scene. The singer, who is half Mexican-American, has flirted with Spanish-language songs in the past and has included Spanish-language versions of songs on albums with The Scene, but now has fully committed with her first Latin EP,  Revelación , released on March 12. On her first Spanish-language album, which features a striking cover shot by Mexican-Colombian photographer Camila Falquez, Gomez tackles reggaeton—a genre she’s experimented with on the 2018 hit “Taki Taki” alongside DJ Snake , Cardi B and Ozuna.

<style>.embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; }</style><div class='embed-container'><iframe src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/h5WN3pkxPF0' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen></iframe></div>

To take on Latin music’s hottest genre of the moment on her own, Gomez called on one of its biggest producers, Puerto Rican GRAMMY-nominated hit-maker Marco "Tainy" Másis , to produce all but one of the 7-tracks on the EP. Gomez also enlisted some of the genre’s most promising names, Puerto Rican artists Rauw Alejandro and Myke Towers, as featured acts on “Baila Conmigo” and “Dámelo To',” respectively.

The album has already been met with huge success — Revelación debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top Latin Albums Chart, making it the first album by a woman to land at the top since 2017.

Gomez references singing on " Taki Taki " as a catalyst for Revelación and said releasing the album this year felt right. "I have been talking about doing an all-Spanish project for the last 10 years and for one reason or another, it didn't come together," she told GRAMMY.com. "I am thankful I waited though because it would have been a completely different project 10 years ago. Some of the music I worked on the last couple of years kind of naturally led to the timing feeling right."

In an interview over email, Gomez talked with GRAMMY.com about making Revelación during the pandemic, embracing her Latinx heritage on the project and continuing to use her platform to inspire change, including during last year’s Black Lives Matter protests.

What was the experience like to work with Tainy on Revelación ?

Tainy is a genius and has this subtle, stealth approach to producing, which suits me. I met him a couple of years ago when we worked together on "I Can't Get Enough," so we had history together and I felt comfortable exploring this side of me with him. We started recording the EP right before COVID shut down everything. It wasn't easy for me to adjust to recording sessions over Zoom. To say I hated it is an understatement. There were times I would just cancel and leave a session because I was so uninspired. Tainy was amazing and very patient as I worked through my frustrations. Late last summer, I finally turned a corner and that is when the music truly started coming together.

You've sang in Spanish before, but this your first time taking on reggaeton music influences in your own music. Did you listen to reggaeton growing up?

Yes, I am a huge reggaeton fan and I was so happy to be able to have the influences on this EP. Some of my favorites are, of course, Nicky Jam, Daddy Yankee , J Balvin , Ozuna, Bad Bunny , and on and on. I felt honored to have Tainy produce Revelación for me. He's immensely respected and it meant a lot to me to have him by my side for this.

Both "Baila Conmigo" and " De Una Vez " are top 5 hits on Billboard's Latin chart. How do you feel to see your music connecting with the Latinx crowd?

I can't even express to you how much it meant to me. A big portion of my audience are Latinx, and I wanted to do this for them as a thank you. I was very nervous before "De Una Vez" was released. My heritage means so much to me and I wanted it to be perfect. I worked closely with my Spanish teacher because I wanted every pronunciation, every word to be perfect. When I saw the reactions, it really made me happy.

<style>.embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; }</style><div class='embed-container'><iframe src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/gQG_2O9Bu6c' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen></iframe></div>

Your namesake Selena Quintanilla had to learn Spanish through her songs. Was that a similar experience for you over the years?

No, my experience was different. When I was growing up, my father's side of the family spoke Spanish and I was fluent until like about 7 or 8 [years old.] I started working around that time and over the years, I began to lose my grasp of the language. I could understand Spanish when I heard it but I couldn't necessarily speak it anymore. It felt remarkable to be immersed in the Spanish language for an extended period of time again. I want to keep on going!

With Revelación , how did you feel to be expressing and writing about your experiences in Spanish?

I find it incredibly powerful. The most important thing for me going into creating the EP was I wanted you to feel something whether you understand Spanish or not. I hope everyone listens with an open heart and mind. I also think it's amazing when anyone who doesn't speak Spanish seeks out the translations and realizes they were drawn to a certain song, and after learning what the words meant, they still have the same feeling.

What was the experience like to work with DJ Snake again for "Selfish Love"?

We had talked about working together for years and we finally did with "Taki Taki." He's a producer who has such a deep knowledge and love of all genres of music. It makes him well-rounded and willing to veer off the road in the greatest way. I had the best time performing with him at Coachella and I can't wait to get onstage with him again.

You're a part of a wave of US-born Latinx artists like Becky G , Kali Uchis , and Omar Apollo , who are making music in Spanish and not just in English. Why do you think more artists are embracing their roots in their music?

First of all, I love all those artists and I'm a big fan of their music. There is this amazing sense of pride that artists are having for their heritage. Maybe we are just paying more attention to it? I think it's always been there. I'm not sure if it's all of the access to music through streaming and the internet that we're exposed to different genres, cultures, and artists that would never get played on the radio, so maybe that has something to do with it. No matter what might be the reasons behind it, I am all for it. I think it helps unite people and expands their minds and experiences.

I love your song "Naturally." Which of your early hits do you like?

I started my career so young, so it's not always easy to look back. I wasn't really aware of what it truly meant to be an artist at the beginning. I thought it was more fun than anything. As I got older, I just cared more. I started writing music and developed an appreciation of the whole process of making music. I know I've grown as an artist and with that comes more confidence of what I bring to the table. That being said, I do have a soft spot for " Who Says ," which I recorded when I was maybe 16. The message of loving yourself and not allowing someone to tear you down still resonates with me today. I will always perform that song.

<style>.embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; }</style><div class='embed-container'><iframe src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/ia1iuXbEaYQ' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen></iframe></div>

Last year was a time of reflection in quarantine. How did you pass the time?

I cannot believe it's been a year since everything shut down. At the beginning, I am not going to lie, I was very lost and it was depressing. I tried to find distractions to stay clear-headed. Whether it was bingeing a new show or painting with watercolors. I just wanted anything to keep my mind off of what was happening. The killing of George Floyd changed everything for me. It was no longer about trying to find mundane things to make time pass. I was saddened. I was enraged and felt motivated. After that, other than keeping everyone safe from COVID, nothing else really mattered.

You have a big social media following and you've used Instagram to highlight mental health awareness and movements like #BlackLivesMatter. How important is it for you to use your platform for issues like these?

Don't get me wrong, I understand the importance of social media to stay connected with my fans and promote my projects. It upsets me greatly though the misinformation and lies that get spread on all social media platforms. In a way, it's a tool that divided us rather than connected us. I am very vocal about my issues with social media and will continue to be until the tech companies take responsibility and make changes. What I can focus on though is how I choose to personally use it and the messages I am putting out in the world.

You've used your platform to support the LGBTQ+ community as well. Do you have a message for your LGBTQ+ fans?

Earlier you mentioned my song " Naturally " and I remember when it was released, it truly started getting played in gay bars before anywhere else. I would hear from older friends that they heard it when they went out. I was so jealous that I was too young to be out and dancing to it with everyone. I hope they hear in my music the importance of self-love and the strength that comes through vulnerability. The LGBTQ+ community has been there for me and I don't take them for granted. Growing up in Texas, I remember when I was a kid, my mother had a group of gay friends and I loved being around them. There was no talk about anyone being "different." It was all pure and genuine love for one another and I'll never forget that. We've come a long way in the last 10 years, but we have so much further to go. The Senate must pass the Equality Act . It's absurd that this is even being debated in 2021.

You've been in the music industry for over a decade now. What have you learned about yourself in that time?

Where do I begin? Sometimes I feel much older with all of the things I've been through in my life. I'd say I've learned to be resilient and not give up, even when the world can feel incredibly dark. In regards to being an artist, I've gained the confidence to be in total control. With my last two albums, it felt empowering to have my vision executed and much more so with the last one, Rare. I didn't want a lot of outside noise. I wanted to be insulated in the studio with my co-writers and producers and make my best music. I think we achieved that and I know I have even more in me to push myself further.

Disney's Golden Age Of Pop: Revisit 2000s Jams From Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez & More

As Disney Music Group celebrates its defining era of superstars and franchises, relive the magic of the 2000s with a playlist of hits from Hilary Duff, Jesse McCartney and more.

"...and you're watching Disney Channel!" For anyone who grew up in the 2000s, those five words likely trigger some pretty vivid imagery: a glowing neon wand, an outline of Mickey Mouse's ears, and every Disney star from Hilary Duff to the Jonas Brothers .

Nearly 20 years later, many of those child stars remain instantly recognizable — and often mononymous — to the millions of fans who grew up with them: Miley Cyrus , Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato . Nick , Kevin and Joe .

Each of those names has equally memorable music attached to it — tunes that often wrap any given millennial in a blanket of nostalgia for a time that was, for better or for worse, "So Yesterday." And all of those hits, and the careers that go with them, have the same starting point in Hollywood Records, Disney Music Group's pop-oriented record label.

This time in Disney's history — the core of which can be traced from roughly 2003 to 2010 — was impactful on multiple fronts. With its music-oriented programming and multi-platform marketing strategies, the network launched a procession of teen idols whose music would come to define the soundtrack to millennials' lives, simultaneously breaking records with its Disney Channel Original Movies, TV shows and soundtracks.

Now, two decades later, Disney Music Group launched the Disney 2000s campaign, honoring the pivotal, star-making era that gave fans a generation of unforgettable pop music. The campaign will last through August and lead directly into D23 2024: The Ultimate Fan Event with special vinyl releases of landmark LPs and nostalgic social media activations occurring all summer long. April's campaign activation was Disney 2000s Weekend at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, which featured special screenings of 2008's Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert and 2009's Hannah Montana: The Movie and Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience .

But before Miley and the JoBros, Hollywood Records' formula for creating relatable (and bankable) teen pop stars began with just one name: Hilary Duff. At the time, the bubbly blonde girl next door was essentially the face of the network thanks to her starring role in "Lizzie McGuire," and she'd just made the leap to the big screen in the summer of 2003 with The Lizzie McGuire Movie . In her years with Disney, Duff had dabbled in recording songs for Radio Disney, and even released a Christmas album under Buena Vista Records. However, her first album with Hollywood Records had the potential to catapult her from charming tween ingénue to bonafide teen pop star — and that's exactly what it did.

Released on August 26, 2003, Duff's Metamorphosis sold more than 200,000 copies in its first week and debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. The following week, the bubblegum studio set performed the rare feat of rising from No. 2 to No. 1, making the then-16-year-old Duff the first solo artist under 18 to earn a No. 1 album since Britney Spears .

The album's immediate success was no fluke: Within a matter of months, Metamorphosis had sold 2.6 million copies. Music videos for its radio-friendly singles "So Yesterday" and "Come Clean" received constant airplay between programming on the Disney Channel. (The latter was eventually licensed as the theme song for MTV's pioneering teen reality series "Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County," giving it an additional boost as a cultural touchstone of the early '00s.) A 33-date North American tour soon followed, and Hollywood Records officially had a sensation on their hands.

Naturally, the label went to work replicating Duff's recipe for success, and even looked outside the pool of Disney Channel stars to develop new talent. Another early signee was Jesse McCartney. With a soulful croon and blonde mop, the former Dream Street member notched the label another big win with his 2004 breakout hit "Beautiful Soul."

" When 'Beautiful Soul' became the label's first No. 1 hit at radio, I think that's when they really knew they had something," McCartney tells GRAMMY.com. "Miley [Cyrus] and the Jonas Brothers were signed shortly after that success and the rest is history.

"The thing that Disney really excelled at was using the synergy of the channel with promoting songs at pop," he continues. "I did appearances on 'Hannah Montana' and 'The Suite Life of Zack & Cody' and my music videos were pushed to Disney Channel. The marketing was incredibly brilliant and I don't think there has been anything as connected with an entire generation like that since then."

By 2006, Disney had nearly perfected its synergistic formula, continually launching wildly popular tentpole franchises like High School Musical and The Cheetah Girls , and then giving stars like Vanessa Hudgens and Corbin Bleu recording contracts of their own. (Curiously, the pair's HSM co-star Ashley Tisdale was never signed to Hollywood Records, instead releasing her first two solo albums with Warner.)

Aly Michalka showed off her vocal chops as sunny girl next door Keely Teslow on "Phil of the Future," and fans could find her off-screen as one half of sibling duo Aly & AJ. In between their 2005 debut album Into the Rush and its electro-pop-charged follow-up, 2007's Insomniatic , Aly and her equally talented younger sister, AJ, also headlined their own Disney Channel Original Movie, Cow Belles . (Duff also helped trailblaze this strategy with her own early DCOM, the ever-charming Cadet Kelly , in 2002, while she was simultaneously starring in "Lizzie McGuire.")

Even after years of proven success, the next class of stars became Disney's biggest and brightest, with Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato and the Jonas Brothers all joining the network — and record label — around the same time. "Hannah Montana" found Cyrus playing a spunky middle schooler by day and world-famous pop star by night, and the network leveraged the sitcom's conceit to give the Tennessee native (and daughter of '90s country heartthrob Billy Ray Cyrus ) the best of both worlds.

After establishing Hannah as a persona, the series' sophomore soundtrack introduced Miley as a pop star in her own right thanks to a clever double album that was one-half Hannah's music and one-half Miley's. It's literally there in the title: Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus .

From there, Cyrus' stardom took off like a rocket as she scored back-to-back No.1 albums and a parade of Top 10 hits like "See You Again," "7 Things," "The Climb," "Can't Be Tamed," and the ever-so-timeless anthem "Party in the U.S.A."

At the same time, Gomez had top billing on her own Disney Channel series, the magical (but less musical) "Wizards of Waverly Place." That hardly stopped her from launching her own music career, though, first by fronting Selena Gomez & the Scene from 2008 to 2012, then eventually going solo with the release of 2013's Stars Dance after the "Wizards" finale aired.

For her part, Lovato — Gomez's childhood bestie and "Barney & Friends" costar — got her big break playing Mitchie Torres in Camp Rock alongside the Jonas Brothers as fictional boy band Connect 3, led by Joe Jonas as the swaggering and floppy-haired Shane Gray. Much like Duff had five years prior in the wake of The Lizzie McGuire Movie , Lovato released her debut solo album, 2008's Don't Forget, just three months after her DCOM broke records for the Disney Channel.

Building off their chemistry from the movie musical, nearly the entirety of Don't Forget was co-written with the Jonas Brothers, who released two of their own albums on Hollywood Records — 2007's Jonas Brothers and 2008's A Little Bit Longer — before getting their own short-lived, goofily meta Disney series, "Jonas," which wrapped weeks after the inevitable Camp Rock sequel arrived in September 2010.

As the 2000s gave way to the 2010s, the Disney machine began slowing down as its cavalcade of stars graduated to more grown-up acting roles, music and careers. But from Duff's Metamorphosis through Lovato's 2017 LP, Tell Me You Love Me , Hollywood Records caught lightning in a bottle again and again and again, giving millennials an entire generation of talent that has carried them through adulthood and into the 2020s.

To commemorate the Disney 2000s campaign, GRAMMY.com crafted a playlist to look back on Disney's golden age of pop with favorite tracks from Hilary Duff, Vanessa Hudgens, the Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus and more. Listen and reminisce below.

GRAMMY Rewind: Kendrick Lamar Honors Hip-Hop's Greats While Accepting Best Rap Album GRAMMY For 'To Pimp a Butterfly' In 2016

Upon winning the GRAMMY for Best Rap Album for 'To Pimp a Butterfly,' Kendrick Lamar thanked those that helped him get to the stage, and the artists that blazed the trail for him.

Updated Friday Oct. 13, 2023 to include info about Kendrick Lamar's most recent GRAMMY wins, as of the 2023 GRAMMYs.

A GRAMMY veteran these days, Kendrick Lamar has won 17 GRAMMYs and has received 47 GRAMMY nominations overall. A sizable chunk of his trophies came from the 58th annual GRAMMY Awards in 2016, when he walked away with five — including his first-ever win in the Best Rap Album category.

This installment of GRAMMY Rewind turns back the clock to 2016, revisiting Lamar's acceptance speech upon winning Best Rap Album for To Pimp A Butterfly . Though Lamar was alone on stage, he made it clear that he wouldn't be at the top of his game without the help of a broad support system.

"First off, all glory to God, that's for sure," he said, kicking off a speech that went on to thank his parents, who he described as his "those who gave me the responsibility of knowing, of accepting the good with the bad."

Looking for more GRAMMYs news? The 2024 GRAMMY nominations are here!

He also extended his love and gratitude to his fiancée, Whitney Alford, and shouted out his Top Dawg Entertainment labelmates. Lamar specifically praised Top Dawg's CEO, Anthony Tiffith, for finding and developing raw talent that might not otherwise get the chance to pursue their musical dreams.

"We'd never forget that: Taking these kids out of the projects, out of Compton, and putting them right here on this stage, to be the best that they can be," Lamar — a Compton native himself — continued, leading into an impassioned conclusion spotlighting some of the cornerstone rap albums that came before To Pimp a Butterfly .

"Hip-hop. Ice Cube . This is for hip-hop," he said. "This is for Snoop Dogg , Doggystyle . This is for Illmatic , this is for Nas . We will live forever. Believe that."

To Pimp a Butterfly singles "Alright" and "These Walls" earned Lamar three more GRAMMYs that night, the former winning Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song and the latter taking Best Rap/Sung Collaboration (the song features Bilal , Anna Wise and Thundercat ). He also won Best Music Video for the remix of Taylor Swift 's "Bad Blood."

Lamar has since won Best Rap Album two more times, taking home the golden gramophone in 2018 for his blockbuster LP DAMN ., and in 2023 for his bold fifth album, Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers .

New Music Friday: Listen To New Releases From Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, Blackpink & More

The summer of 2023 may be winding down, but its musical offerings remain white-hot. Check out some new songs and albums that arrived on Aug. 25, from Maluma to Burna Boy.

The faintest hint of fall is in the air, but the summer of 2023's musical deluge continues unabated. Across genres, scenes and styles, the landscape continues to flourish.

We have Miley Cyrus 's first song since Endless Summer Vacation — a vulnerable, proudly " unfinished " offering. On the opposite end of the vibe spectrum, Selena Gomez has thrown caution to the wind with the carefree "Single Soon."

And that's just the beginning — beloved acts from Burna Boy to BLACKPINK are back with fresh material. Before you dive into the weekend, add these songs to your playlist.

Miley Cyrus — "Used To Be Young"

On her first song since Endless Summer Vacation arrived in March, two-time GRAMMY nominee Cyrus avoids tidiness, and pursues honest reflection.

"The time has arrived to release a song that I could perfect forever. Although my work is done, this song will continue to write itself everyday," she said in a statement. "The fact it remains unfinished is a part of its beauty. That is my life at this moment ….. unfinished yet complete."

"Used to Be Young" belongs to the pantheon of "turning 30" jams; therein, Cyrus looks back on her misspent youth, and the attendant heat of the spotlight. "You say I used to be wild/ I say I used to be young," she sings.

In the stark video, she gazes unflinchingly into the lens, without varnish or artifice.

Selena Gomez — "Single Soon"

Where Cyrus' new song bittersweetly gazes backward, Gomez's carbonated new jam "Single Soon" is focused on the promised reverie of tomorrow — sans boyfriend.

"Should I do it on the phone?/ Should I leave a little note/ In the pocket of his coat?" the two-time GRAMMY nominee wonders, sounding positively giddy about her unshackling from Mr. Wrong.

As the song unspools, Gomez gets ready for a wild night out; the song ends with the portentous question, "Well, who's next?" If you're ready to slough off your summer fling, "Single Soon" is for you.

Ariana Grande — Yours Truly: Tenth Anniversary

The two-time GRAMMY winner and 15-time nominee's acclaimed debut album, Yours Truly , arrived on Aug. 30, 2013; thus, it's time to ring in its tin anniversary.

Granted, these aren't "new songs," per se: rather, i n a weeklong celebration , Grande is reintroducing audiences to Yours Truly .

Dive in, and you'll find "Live From London" versions of multiple songs. Plus — perhaps most enticingly — the sprawling re-release contains two new versions of "The Way," her hit collaboration with late ex Mac Miller.

Maluma — Don Juan

Papi Juancho is dead; long live Don Juan. "Fue un placer," Maluma wrote on Instagram last New Year's Eve. (It translates to "It was a pleasure.")

And with that, the Colombian rap-singing heavyweight ushered in a new character. He's now Don Juan — in a reference both to the fictional libertine and his birth name of Juan Luis Londoño Arias.

Now, Don Juan's out with his titular album — which he dubs a "mature" blending of the musics that got him going, like reggaeton, house, salsa, and hip-hop.

Burna Boy & Dave — "Cheat On Me"

Just over a year after his latest album, Love, Damini , Burna Boy is back with I Told Them… The Nigerian star offers another forward-thinking missive with his seventh album.

Featuring the likes of 21 Savage , J. Cole , and Wu-Tang Clan 's GZA and RZA , I Told Them… is one highlight after the next — and "Cheat On Me" is one of them. For the advance single, the GRAMMY-winning Afro-fusion dynamo teamed up with London rapper Dave.

Therein, the pair expound on getting out of their own way. The chorus, powered by a sample from British-Ghanian singer/songwriter Kwabs, sums it all up: "I couldn't see/ I was cheating on, cheating on me."

Blackpink — "The Girls"

BLACKPINK are a bona fide cross-cultural sensation , but they won't stop at the music: they're a game now.

A little over a year after their second studio album, Born Pink , the acclaimed South Korean girl group has released a mobile app, succinctly called "The Game." Therein — and above — players can watch the video for "The Girls," their first post- Born Pink jam.

Don't say Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa didn't warn you: "Stop sign, we're burning it down/ Better watch out, we coming in loud/ Bang, bang, just playing around/ Don't mess with the girls, with the girls, with the girls."

The Killers — "Your Side of Town"

The Killers ' beloved debut album, Hot Fuss , turns 20 next year; as a ramp-up, here's "Your Side of Town," a new slice of electro-pop from the Vegas crew.

The sleek, aerodynamic, Auto-Tuned "Your Side of Town" is their first single since their acclaimed pair of albums, 2020's Imploding the Mirage and 2021's Pressure Machine .

Here, the five-time GRAMMY nominees take a Pet Shop Boys -like tack with the music; lyrically, they're still putting the "heart" in heartland rock.

"I'm hanging on your side of town/ I notice when you're not around," frontman Brandon Flowers sings on the chorus. "Can't keep my cool, I'm burning inside/ A broken heartbeat, barely alive."

But the Killers — like everyone on this list — remain very alive.

9 Songs You Didn't Know Jon Bellion Wrote & Produced: Hits By Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez & More

Pop superproducer Jon Bellion is the man behind Tori Kelly's new ep, 'tori,' but he's also been involved with countless hits for more than a decade. Check out nine of Bellion's biggest songs, from Eminem to Jonas Brothers.

If the name Jon Bellion sounds familiar, it's probably because of his 2016 single "All Time Low." With its relentless "low-low-low-low-low" chorus, the electronic-fused pop confection scored Bellion his first major hit — as a solo artist, that is.

Prior to Bellion's breakthrough with his debut solo single, he'd already made a name for himself behind the scenes by writing and producing songs for the likes of Eminem , Jason Derulo, Zedd and CeeLo Green . And in the seven years since "All Time Low" became a top 20 hit, he's celebrated plenty of other smashes with some of pop's A-listers from Christina Aguilera to Justin Bieber .

This year alone, he worked with the Jonas Brothers to executive produce their statement-making record The Album , helped shape Maroon 5 's "Middle Ground" — which is expected to be the lead single off the veteran pop-rockers' forthcoming eighth studio album — and teamed up with Switchfoot for an orchestral 2023 update of the band's 2003 breakout single " Meant to Live ."

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Beautiful Mind (@jonbellion)

Bellion's most recent work can be heard on Tori Kelly 's new self-titled EP tori , which dropped July 28. Along with producing the project, Bellion joined Kelly for a magnetic, electro-tinged track titled "young gun." Upon the EP's release, Kelly herself noted Bellion's impact , calling their collaboration "the start of something really special."

In honor of Bellion's latest project, take a look at nine songs you may not have known contained Bellion's signature touch — a roadmap to his becoming one of the most in-demand producers of the moment.

Eminem feat. Rihanna — "The Monster"

One of Bellion's earliest smashes came courtesy of Eminem — well, and Bebe Rexha . The pop singer penned the track's dark hook while working on her debut album, but it later made its way to Eminem and eventually shapeshifted into his fourth collaboration with Rihanna . The song became the duo's second No. 1 collaboration following 2010's "Love The Way You Lie" and remains one of most monstrous hits in Bellion's career.

Jason Derulo — "Trumpets"

Jason Derulo worked solely with Bellion on this top 20 hit from his 2013 Tattoos , which was later re-packaged as 2014's Talk Dirty . Built around an irresistible horn line of, yes, literal trumpets, Bellion and Derulo concocted a bouncy, flirtatious symphony to smoothly objectify the R&B singer's lady love, and manages to name drop Coldplay , Katy Perry and Kanye West over the course of just three minutes and thirty-seven seconds.

Christina Aguilera feat. Demi Lovato — "Fall in Line"

Bellion handled production on Christina Aguilera's fierce 2018 team-up with Demi Lovato , "Fall in Line," off the former's 2018 LP Liberation . Behind the boards, Bellion effectively captured all of the feminist rage and empowerment that the two vocal powerhouses lit into their lyrics, pairing their sneering vocals with a vamping strings section, rattling chains and a robotic male overlord futilely demanding, "March, two, three, right, two, three/ Shut your mouth, stick your ass out for me."

"Fall in Line" scored a nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 2019 GRAMMYs, marking Aguilera's twentieth career nod and Lovato's second.

Maroon 5 — "Memories"

To kick off their seventh album, JORDI , Maroon 5 enlisted Bellion to co-write lead single "Memories." The gentle ballad found frontman Adam Levine mourning the loss of a friend, pouring one out over a lilting reggae-pop line that cleverly samples Johann Pachelbel's "Canon in D Major." While the heartfelt song is dedicated to the band's longtime manager (and namesake of the LP) Jordan Feldstein, who tragically passed away in 2017 due to a blood clot, the relatable sentiment of "Memories" helped it peak at No. 2 on the Hot 100.

In addition to "Memories," Bellion also worked with the band on two other songs from JORDI , co-writing fourth single "Lost" as well as Anuel AA and Tainy collab "Button." Three years later, he would reunite with the band to co-write and co-produce their latest, equally delicate single "Middle Ground" alongside the likes of Andrew Watt and Rodney Jerkins .

Miley Cyrus — "Midnight Sky"

Miley Cyrus came raring into her glam rock-inspired album Plastic Hearts on the back of "Midnight Sky," an unapologetic statement of independence following her split from longtime love Liam Hemsworth. Dripping in sultry synths, the power ballad took a page from '80s rock icons like Joan Jett , Debbie Harry and Stevie Nicks .

The sound was an entirely new one for Cyrus — which is one of Bellion's tools when working with a new superstar for the first time. In a 2023 Billboard interview , he likened his approach to inventing a new kind of ride for the given A-lister. "They have already built an amazing theme park: millions of people go to it and experience their roller coasters," he said. "They put me in charge of revamping or creating a new section of the theme park, and they let me be the foreman of it all." The new style worked in Cyrus' favor, and earned Bellion yet another top 20 hit on the Hot 100.

Justin Bieber — "Holy"

Bellion's fingerprints are all over Justin Bieber's 2021 album Justice , starting notably with its Chance the Rapper -assisted lead single "Holy," which he both co-wrote and co-produced. The superproducer contributed to six other songs on the pop-driven LP — including the pop radio No. 1 "Ghost," which was inspired by Bellion's late grandmother — as well as three deluxe tracks. And though Bellion didn't have any credited features, his voice can still be heard: he offered background vocals on seven of the songs.

Justice earned Bellion his very first GRAMMY nomination, as the project was nominated for Album Of The Year at the 2022 GRAMMYs (Bieber also received seven other nods).

Selena Gomez — "My Mind & Me"

Bellion first collaborated with Selena Gomez on Rare album cut "Vulnerable" alongside Amy Allen , Michael Pollack and The Monsters & Strangerz . Two years later, the entire team reunited for the title track to the pop singer's Apple TV+ documentary My Mind & Me .

Bellion and co. helped Gomez tap even further into the most vulnerable side of her psyche to date. "Vulnerable" saw Gomez letting her guard down with a new flame, but "My Mind & Me" allowed her to completely lay bare her mental health journey. "Sometimes I feel like an accident, people look when they're passin' it/ Never check on the passenger, they just want the free show," she sings. "Yeah, I'm constantly tryna fight somethin' that my eyes can't see," over spare guitar and piano.

Jonas Brothers — "Waffle House"

After the success of their 2019 comeback album Happiness Begins with producer Ryan Tedder , the Jonas Brothers recruited Bellion to helm the boards on their 2023 follow-up The Album . The producer helped the hitmaking siblings tap into a new facet of their pop-rock sound, finding inspiration in the '70s music their dad raised them on. (As Joe Jonas told GRAMMY.com upon the album's release, Bellion "was saying exactly what we were hoping for" when they first met to mull over ideas.)

While Bellion had a hand in every song on The Album , second single "Waffle House" is the latest to earn both him and Jonas Brothers a top 15 hit on pop radio. Bellion also serves as the one and only featured artist on The Album , coming out from behind the boards and into the vocal booth for bombastic closer "Walls."

Tori Kelly — "missin u"

Tori Kelly first linked up with Bellion thanks to Justin Bieber, as the pair worked together with the Biebs on tender bonus cut "Name" from the Justice sessions. So, when it came time to launch a new era with her self-titled EP tori, the songstress turned to Bellion to help bring her vision to life.

On lead single "missin u," the two-time GRAMMY winner throws the guitar-driven singer/songwriter vibes of her past work out the window in favor of a sleek R&B sound reminiscent of the early 2000s. The sonic gear shift is a natural fit for her lithe voice as she replays a romance that "was rainin' purple skies in my room." Somehow, Kelly even manages to outdo the vocal acrobatics of "missin u" with a deliriously brilliant "R&B edit" that adds even more layers, soul and vocal flourishes to the single.

"When I first started working with Jon Bellion, we were just beginning to scratch the surface on a new sound that truly felt like my own," Kelly explains in a video celebrating the release of her self-titled EP tori . "I know that I'm gonna look back on this collaboration as the start of something really special." As for Bellion's thoughts on his latest project? "Tori Kelly's the greatest vocalist of all time!"

Live reviews

I went to see Selena Gomez on the night of July 23, 2016. I got tickets of festival A, which was the most front section. Before the show started, I waited outside of the venue, lining up for around 5 hours, and when they let us in, we had to wait for another 2 hours until Selena appears on stage. I was really happy to know that I was VERY close to Selena, and I couldn't believe that she was standing RIGHT THERE in front of me.

The crowd was intense. When the show had really started, my section just went crazy like waves in the ocean. We all went pushing each other from left to right, right to left, front to back, and back to front. It was difficult for me to find for air. But as soon as Selena was done singing Revival, which was her opening song, the crowd sort of calmed down a bit and I was able to catch my breath. And I was also able to see Selena standing right in front me, clearly.

Selena has a way of performing that could engage her audience to sing and dance along with her. I can tell that the audience had a very strong connection with her while she was performing. The stage set was beautiful. Selena's live voice was beautiful. I really enjoyed what she did for us, together with her band, back-up singers, and especially, her dancers.

My most favourite performances that night was Kill Em With Kindness, Love You Like A Love Song, and Nobody. Honestly, those songs were performed better live than the studio versions, especially LYLALS.

I was really grateful to be able to see her perform live, after more than 6 years of waiting. It was definitely worth the wait.

Selena Gomez is a new artist for me but once I got the chance to go to one of her shows she quickly became one of my favorite singers.

Now I see why so many people scream Selena and follow her around to see her shows. She is such a cute girl and I'm so happy for her and the fame she has come into. She has so many fans who genuinely love her and the music that she sings.

My children now love her as well. When she is coming to town they must go and see her. I think she has a positive message and stands for something good. Her music is catchy and upbeat. I catch myself dancing around at the concert too even though my kids fully enjoy it. They laugh seeing their old mom have fun too. I will continue to take them to see Selena because I think her music is good.

The performance is a plus in my book. I appreciate them for the show they put on too. She's young and full of energy and she makes me feel young again. I just loved the whole night and will go again. Thanks Selena for a great night.

July 9th 2016 Revival Tour Aneheim, California

Concert was absolutely amazing. I went to the stadium at 05:00am and waited thirteen hours to get into the stadium (my friends and I had GA which was right next to the stage). The wait was so worth it, we got first row, and just seeing her so close was everything. She is such an amazing performer and she sang a song that was not on her setlist with Charlie Puth (We Don't Talk Anymore). Her dancers are probably the best dancers I have ever seen. The stage setup was simple, but exquisite. She is such a beautiful person to watch perform. The only thing I wish she would have done, is sang some of her OLDER songs. She sang some from her past albums, but those were all singles. I would have loved it if she sang some songs from her first album (Kiss and Tell). But that is a personal preference. Her overall performance was so spectacular, and she delivered 472910%.

It was lit. That word is so overused but it's the first word that comes to mind when I describe my concert experience. Seeing her in concert was life-changing. I danced all night, sang my heart out, at the end of the night I was sore but it was worth it. Definitely one of the best performers out there.

It was amazing I cried when I saw her. I waned to go to her concert for years. I was 5 when I first started listing to her. I am 13 now. It was cool how she took someones phone in the audience because they were on Skype. So she said Hi to the person. Someday I will meet her face to face.

How Selena Gomez embraced her Mexican heritage as 'a source of healing'

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Selena Gomez is not particularly famous for starting fights — but she's happy to finish them.

Flanked by cameras and assistants sporting plastic face shields, Gomez has spent the past few weeks walking the streets of Manhattan in a shaggy, rust-colored coat, filming scenes for the Hulu original series “Only Murders in the Building," a show inspired by true crime podcasts and helmed by comedy greats Steve Martin and Martin Short.

The guys make rather distracting costars for Gomez — “I can barely get through a tape because they're making me laugh the entire time,” she says — but more distracting are the paparazzi, who, after having a slow year during the COVID-19 pandemic, now trail the 28-year-old superstar doggedly across the city. It was finally on one afternoon in late February when Gomez broke character to throw a middle finger at a cheeky paparazzo on the street. "Somebody was being disrespectful," she tells The Times. "And I don't do well with that."

Seated by the window of her New York apartment, Gomez appears via video call in a red flannel button-up shirt and gold hoops, which sharpen the edges of her soft, seraphic profile. “Look, I am a very modest person, until you disrespect people,” she says. “Maybe [it wasn’t] my best moment, but a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do. And I felt very OK with being like …. ‘Don’t talk to people that way!’”

Gomez has spent the better part of her life taking command over her voice, whether on screen, in song or in her personal life.

The 28-year-old first made her name as a child star of beloved shows like “Barney & Friends” and the Disney Channel series “Wizards of Waverly Place” — then set her kiddie credentials aflame by appearing in Harmony Korine’s 2012 arthouse romp, “Spring Breakers,” cueing her pivot to more PG-13 roles as well as executive producer credits on hot-button shows like " 13 Reasons Why ."

Her music career followed the same trajectory in 2012, when she left behind her bubblegum rock band the Scene to cut it as a one-woman act, turning over maximalist dance-floor cuts in 2013's "Stars Dance" and 2015's "Revival." Parting ways with off-and-on flame Justin Bieber, plus a self-imposed mental health sabbatical, helped shape 2020's "Rare," her first album in five years and her third consecutive album to debut at No.

As the pandemic wound on, Gomez turned her house into a makeshift office space for her cosmetics line, Rare Beauty; a television set for her HBO Max cooking show, “ Selena + Chef ," and a recording studio for her first-ever Spanish-language EP, “Revelación,” or "Revelation," due out March 12.

“The Spanish record wouldn’t have happened had I just kept going with the pace of my life and all my other commitments,” she explains. “A few years ago I would have never had taken these opportunities because of my insecurities or things that I was dealing with mentally. It helped me change my outlook — being able to say ‘If it doesn't happen right now, that's OK. That just means it'll be later or whenever.’"

"It's nice to be in a place where I feel lucky and grounded and really happy to just be working," she says.

On "Rare," Gomez delivered soul-baring pop confessionals like “ Lose You to Love Me ," singing self-possessed verses with the reverent lilt of a choirgirl. But on "Revelación," Gomez evolves into a sensuous tropical siren, swaying both her body and voice to match the rhythm of the ocean tides. Wearing a sumptuous floral gown, and a sacred heart radiating from her chest, Gomez debuted her video for the reggaeton-flavored guitar ballad, “De Una Vez," in February — building on the same intimate triumphs of "Rare" but for a Spanish-speaking audience.

"Sé que el tiempo a tu lado cortó mis alas / Pero ahora este pecho es antibalas," she sings, walking her buoyant melody along with the unhurried rhythm of dembow. "I know the time by your side cut my wings / But now this chest is bulletproof."

Whether featuring on DJ Snake’s 2018 club smash with Ozuna and Cardi B, “ Taki Taki ," or opposite J Balvin in 2019 on Tainy and Benny Blanco's " I Can't Get Enough ," Gomez deferred most of the Spanish-language lyrics to her Latinx costars.

“I didn't think I was ready to make a record in Spanish,” she professes. "I was fluent in Spanish until I started working at 7. Then my job just kinda took over my life."

It was when producing " Living Undocumented ," a 2019 Netflix docuseries that shadows eight immigrant families living in the United States — not to mention hearing the harmful, anti-immigrant rhetoric that circulated during the 2020 presidential election — that Gomez started to see her waning Spanish fluency not as a barrier but as an opportunity for connection. "Maybe embracing that part of me can be a source of healing for somebody else,” she says.

Billboard charts, extending its shelf life well past the mania surrounding Daddy Yankee and Luis Fonsi's 2017 crossover success, “ Despacito .”

"The Latin community is so versatile," says Tainy, who collaborated with Gomez over a series of video calls from his studio in Miami. “We're all from different places, but we inspire each other. Selena can be very humble, but she knows the culture, she knows the sound and she has the range."

Wary of being the Chicana interloper in a predominantly Caribbean genre, Gomez wanted to connect with her Hispanic fans through the music they love but remain sensitive to the cultural distinctions between Latinos. Prior to recording “Revelación," she hired Spanish-language coach Leyla Hoyle-Guerrero — who also counts Demi Lovato and Gwen Stefani as clientele — to help freshen her Spanish vocabulary and loosen her accent to better roll with the music.

That's something that requires meticulous care. But now, I think I actually sound better in Spanish than I do in English."

Gomez's namesake, the late Tejana pop queen Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, suffered a similar identity crisis for years before her untimely death at 23.

Selena died when Gomez was two, but, she explains, "her spirit never left my family." Gomez recalls multiple trips to the Selena memorial in Corpus Christi and met the Quintanilla family before singing “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” live at the Houston Rodeo in 2010.

It's a bucket list item for the star, who previously canceled the Latin American leg of her "Revival" tour in 2016, citing depression and exhaustion caused by lupus. “South America's where I would start, because we missed it last time, and because that's where my heart is,” she says.

“We had just started working together," she says of Dominguez, shaking her head. “I honestly thought, ‘No wonder guys don't want to date me!' I think people only care because I'm young, and the older I get the less they'll care. For now it’s a part of the job that I don't really like. I'm actually grateful that I'm not involved with anyone right now.”

One can't help but think of Britney Spears, whose lifetime of overexposure, not to mention her ongoing legal battle for autonomy, recently came up for review in the documentary, " Framing Britney Spears ." Spears was the first artist Gomez saw live in concert; Gomez's rhythmic vocal flourishes can be traced back to Spears, who in turn, enjoys dancing to Gomez's songs on Instagram. Out of solidarity for Spears, Gomez declined to watch the documentary.

"I've seen so much, and it feels violating for me to watch something like that," says Gomez. "I couldn't even imagine. I have nothing but sympathy for her, and I'm happy as long as she is healthy and happy."

If there is anything to be decoded from Gomez's "Revelación," beyond the lyrics themselves, it's that defining the contours of her identity — apart from a job title, a relationship or a birthplace — will be a lifelong journey and only for her to steer. Once the scene is wrapped, the sun goes down and the relentless pinging of her phone subsides, Gomez can exhale and take comfort in knowing at least she's the one behind the wheel.

“I don't have all the answers. There's no moment when I'm like, ‘OK, guys, I'm healed from everything!'" she says. "It’ll always be a roller coaster. I'm just figuring out what track I want to be on.”

How Selena Gomez Embraces Her Mexican Heritage

selena gomez mexico tour

Selena Gomez recently turned 31. The singer, actress, and producer has been a force in the entertainment industry for over two decades, and she has always been proud of her Mexican heritage.

Selena was born in Grand Prairie, Texas. Her father, Ricardo Joel Gomez, and her mother, Mandy Teefey, were teenage lovers who went their separate ways when she was 5. Although Gomez lived with her mom, who is of Italian descent , Gomez retained a connection to her Mexican heritage by sharing weekends, holidays, and quinceañeras with her father, whose parents first migrated to Texas from Monterrey, Mexico, during the 1970s.

She has stated that she was fluent in Spanish until she was around 6 or 7, but then lost her proficiency. As Gomez’s career took off, she continued to embrace her Mexican heritage. In 2011, she released Spanish-language versions of her hit songs “A Year Without Rain” and “Who Said.”

While she was featured on DJ Snake’s 2018 club smash with Ozuna and Cardi B, “Taki Taki,” and opposite J Balvin in 2019 on Tainy and Benny Blanco’s “I Can’t Get Enough,” she left most of the Spanish-language lyrics to her Latinx co-stars as she felt that she wasn’t ready to sing in Spanish.

During the creation of “Living Undocumented,” a docuseries released on Netflix in 2019, which follows the lives of eight immigrant families residing in the United States, and in light of the detrimental, anti-immigrant discourse that pervaded the 2020 presidential election, Gomez experienced a shift in perspective regarding her diminishing proficiency in Spanish. Instead of perceiving it as a barrier, she began recognizing it as a chance to foster connections and forge meaningful relationships.

She said in a new interview with Dazed: “I’m always very vocal about my background, as far as me talking about immigration and my grandparents having to come across the border illegally. I wouldn’t have been born [otherwise]. I can’t even imagine what these kids being separated from their families are going through. It’s something that is going to traumatize them for the rest of their lives. And it just seems animalistic.”

In an op-ed published by Time Magazine in 2019, the singer recounts how her aunt crossed the border from Mexico to the United States in the back of a truck in the 1970s, before other family members followed later: “Over the past four decades, members of my family have worked hard to gain United States citizenship. Undocumented immigration is an issue I think about every day, and I never forget how blessed I am to have been born in this country thanks to my family and the grace of circumstance.”

In 2021, Selena released her first full-length Spanish-language EP , “Revelación.” The EP was a critical and commercial success, and it earned Gomez a Grammy nomination for Best Latin Pop Album. Before recording the album, she hired a Spanish-language coach to help freshen her Spanish vocabulary and loosen her accent to better roll with the music.

An intricate fusion of American R&B, electro-pop, and reggaeton, “Revelación” showcases a diverse array of musical styles. In addition to her second collaboration with DJ Snake, the EP also includes captivating duets with emerging Puerto Rican MCs Myke Towers and Rauw Alejandro. Guided by Tainy, the acclaimed producer who has earned Grammy nominations for his work with artists like Bad Bunny, J Balvin, and, most recently, Dua Lipa, the six-song EP promises to deliver a unique and memorable musical experience.

Sabrina Carpenter made her Eras Tour debut Thursday night (Aug. 24) in Mexico City, an opening performance for Taylor Swift she christened with a cover of one of the most famous Mexican-American artists of all time: Selena Quintanilla.

Performing in front of thousands of fans at Foro Sol, the first of four stops Swift has planned for the venue, Carpenter looked sparklingly confident running through her setlist of Emails I Can’t Send tracks, including Billboard Hot 100 hit “Nonsense,” “Read your Mind” and deluxe track “Feather.” Known for improvising a new “Nonsense” outro at her concerts, the 24-year-old rising pop star quipped, “If you are a Swiftie you’re mi gente . Let me hear make some noise DF.”

Before Swift came out for her three-hour performance, Carpenter also squeezed in a cover of “Dreaming of You,” Selena’s 1995 hit. “There’s nowhere in the world I’d rather be/ Than here in my room dreaming about you and me,” the former Disney star sang as her audience cheered her on.

Thursday night’s show kicks off more than a year of international dates Swift has planned for her blockbuster Eras Tour run, with Carpenter slated to open for all of the upcoming shows in Latin America, Australia and Singapore. Paramore will then take over as the support act for the “Anti-Hero” singer’s dates in Europe, after which seasoned Eras Tour veteran Gracie Abrams will return for a second U.S. run.

Carpenter’s kickoff show follows her global Emails I Can’t Send Tour, which began in September 2022, a few months after the release of the musician’s top 40 album of the same name. It also comes on the heels of her newest release, a remix of Fifty Fifty’s “Cupid,” which arrived last week .

New music from Selena Gomez may soon be on its way. Speaking with Deadline for the outlet’s Crew Call podcast published on Tuesday (May 24), the “Lose You to Love Me” singer confirmed that she is currently in Los Angeles and working on an LP.

“I am in L.A. working on my album now,” the 29-year-old revealed when asked what’s on the horizon for her following season two of her hit Hulu series, Only Murders in the Building , on which she plays Mabel Mora . Gomez did not share any additional details on the future album’s release, which will serve as the follow-up to her 2020 album Rare , and her 2021 Spanish language EP, Revelación ; the albums peaked in the No. 1 and No. 22 spots on the Billboard 200 chart, respectively.

As for touring plans, Gomez is unsure of if she’ll be heading on the road to support the forthcoming album due to her busy schedule, though she is “open” to the possibility of a tour happening. “I’m open to a tour, one thousand percent, but I obviously have obligations and things I wanna do, so when the time’s right,” she explained on the podcast. “It’s not the top of my priority list.”

Gomez also teased that there’s the possibility of a musical number in Only Murders in the Building , in which she stars in alongside Steve Martin and Martin Short. When the interviewer suggested a cabaret musical number for the show, the actress said, “Steve and I are hesitant because I wanna be careful. I love Mabel, and I love that she is an extension of me, so sometimes my worry is that it might turn into a pop -star thing, and that’s clearly not Mabel,” she said. “I’m not opposed.”

Season two of Only Murders in the Building is set to premiere on Hulu June 28. Listen to Gomez talk about her album, touring and the show below.

Selena Gomez showed her luxurious business style in a nearly $23,000 outfit at the Time100 Summit

  • Selena Gomez wore an outfit worth nearly $23,000 at the Time100 Summit in New York on Wednesday.
  • Her look included a $1,017 leather coat and an $11,500 diamond tennis necklace.
  • She attended the event to talk about her makeup brand, Rare Beauty, which is valued at $2 billion.

Insider Today

When Selena Gomez goes to work, she does so in style.

The "Only Murders in the Building" star visited New York City on Wednesday to attend the annual Time100 Summit. While there, she spoke onstage with senior Time editor Lucy Feldman about her makeup brand, Rare Beauty.

And all the while, she stunned in her luxurious, business-ready outfit — which retails for nearly $23,000.

Related stories

Gomez arrived at the event wearing a $1,017 black-leather duster coat from Ducie , $595 cat-eye-shaped sunglasses from Linda Farrow , and a $790 Completedworks purse made from resin and recycled leather.

The three pieces accessorized her corseted Brandon Maxwell gown, which was made from leather and retails for $3,295.

Erin Walsh , who styled Gomez for the event, completed the look with $298 Black Suede Studio heels. They've since sold out.

But the most expensive part of Gomez's outfit was her diamond jewelry from Stephanie Gottlieb, which cost $16,985.

She wore a double-domed ring made from diamonds and gold that sells for $1,990 , matching earrings that cost $3,495 , and a diamond tennis choker that retails for $11,500 .

The expensive outfit was fitting for Gomez, as she noted during the event that she has no plans to sell Rare Beauty — despite the brand being valued at $2 billion.

"I don't think I'm going anywhere. I am enjoying this a little too much," she told Time. "I just want to continue building what we're doing."

Review: Coldplay brings empathy — and Selena Gomez — to the band’s 2023 North American tour finale

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — In 2023, a Coldplay concert opens like a triumphant finale — LED wristbands flashing, confetti canons on overdrive, a singalong of 68,000 voices repeating “You’ve got a higher power,” to match frontman Chris Martin’s energy.

Flags representing attendees from Argentina, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Colombia, Venezuela, South Korea and Brazil were raised; children and the elderly sang along to familiar radio hits. Live music isn’t church, but for two hours on Sunday night, the British band got close.

A short film on the conservation efforts of Coldplay’s global stadium tour for their 2021 album “Music of the Spheres” previewed the band’s North American tour closer at the Rose Bowl, just outside of Los Angeles. Then: an explosion of rainbow lighting effects, tie-dye orbs, and wholesome bits — for “Paradise,” Martin asked the audience to engage in the “quietest singalong ever,” chanting the title in a whisper.

In one moment, he participated in a gender reveal — a couple handed him an envelope, which he opened for the cameras — blue for boy. In another, he read some of the signs held high above heads in the crowd before inviting two girls from Mexico on stage to sing “Let Somebody Go.” When he was handed a small stool, he joked, “We’re the most popular soft rock band in the world and we can’t afford a stool?”

“This song you’ve chosen, we used to play it a bit, but we, when we recorded it, we recorded it with Selena Gomez,” Martin told the two girls. They sang together, before Gomez herself emerged from the stage below for her verse. Then, opener H.E.R. joined and played guitar — an unexpected surprise for a glorious final night.

Elsewhere, the virtuosity of the band was apparent. Drummer Will Champion sang while leading the percussion; guitarist Jonny Buckland and bassist Guy Berryman took turns playing keys and synths. For a band that formed 26 years ago, there was a sense that this was a full-circle moment — that they still remember those early days of cigarettes and writing together in small practice spaces, and that allows them the ability to see their future.

The overarching sentiment for the night, of course, was empathy. Martin ran around with a trans-inclusive rainbow pride flag and routinely reminded the audience that “everyone is an alien somewhere,” as his graphic t-shirt read. Routinely, he spoke in Spanish and asked the audience to sing in Korean for the BTS collaboration, “My Universe.”

At the end of the show: a killer series of singles, including “A Sky Full of Stars,” “Fix You” and an acoustic encore of “Magic.” Then, fireworks. There is a reason the band is beloved around the world — after the encore, Coldplay played the audience out with “Believe in Love,” a welcome reminder.

Benny Blanco says he was the ‘last to know’ he was ‘in love’ with Selena Gomez

By Emily Tannenbaum

Four months after Selena Gomez revealed her relationship with Benny Blanco, the 36-year-old cookbook author and record producer is opening up about their love story—at least, his side of it.

In his new Wall Street Journal cover story, Blanco revealed that he fell for Gomez after reuniting with the 31-year-old pop star in the recording studio. While the pair collaborated on his 2019 music video for “ I Can't Get Enough ,” they didn't work together again until “Single Soon,” which was released in August 2023.

“I was the last one to know,” Blanco said of his feelings for Gomez. “It’s crazy how your partner could just be sitting there the whole time, right in front of your eyes, and you don’t even notice, and then you have that Clueless moment where you’re like, Wait, I’m in love.”

…while courtside with boyfriend Benny Blanco, no less.

Of course, he wasn't really the last to know. Gomez and Blanco had been secretly dating for six months before going public with their relationship in December 2023. At the time, the 31-year-old pop star confirmed the rumours on Instagram, telling fans that her fellow musical foodie was “the best thing that's ever happened to me.”

Despite (or, perhaps, because of) their rampant PDA and public date nights since the announcement, many of Gomez's fans still haven't warmed up to the idea of the Rare Beauty mogul dating the chef with a penchant for going toes out at basketball games.

It appears that some fans are not over some unfavorable remarks he made back in 2020 while praising his “Lonely” collaborator Justin Bieber on The Zach Sang Show . “Justin is not one of those, like, cookie-cutter pop artists,” he said at the time. “You know they’re, like, ‘This is my new single and here’s my makeup line.’”

When one fan reminded Gomez that Blanco had been “shading you years ago,” she replied, “Yeah and he's still better than anyone I've ever been with. Facts.”

selena gomez mexico tour

During his interview with WSJ , Benny Blanco said he doesn't read the comments about him on social media. Instead, he seems to be focusing all his energy on his upcoming book tour for Open Wide: A Cookbook for Friends . He told writer Lane Florsheim that he's excited to introduce Gomez to a spot in New York called The Grill because she “loves a good martini.”

The pair cook together a lot, Blanco also revealed, telling the WSJ that they once served her corn casserole alongside his corn bread with honey butter recipe while hosting a steakhouse dinner for their families. “I just love entertaining and pleasing people,” he said. “Doesn’t everyone want to be cared for, whether it’s your friend or a lover or your family? Doesn’t it feel good when someone makes you something?”

The answer, of course, is yes. Do you get it now?

“It‘s hard to keep doing music when people don’t necessarily take you seriously,” she told Vogue, “I’ve had moments where I’ve been like, ‘What’s the point? Why do I keep doing this?’”

However it seems Selena is thrilled to be making music, following the success of her latest EP ‘Revelación’ recorded in Spanish, which was a follow up to her 2020 record Rare, peaking at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart.

After four seasons of Selena + Chef , which entails Gomez inviting chefs over (often virtually) to help her with new recipes and cooking techniques, it's not surprising she's joining the Food Network cohort with this revamped concept. And she plans to take her culinary adventures to the next level.

Viewers will watch Gomez visit six different restaurants and attempt to create a dish delicious enough to have it added to the official menu. Experienced chefs from each spot will guide her in learning the restaurant’s menu (and some new cooking tricks) before she has the opportunity to have one of her own recipes featured.

“After cooking mostly virtually from my kitchen with some of the best chefs for the last four years, I was thrilled to step into their world,” Gomez said in a Food Network announcement. “You’ll have to see if being in person helped my skills at all.”

Joined by friend Raquelle Stevens, Gomez will first visit Chef Wolfgang Puck in the debut episode, where she'll master one of his classic dishes before making her take on a spicy seafood dish . Then she heads to Los Angeles to make dumplings at restaurant Ms Chi.

Each episode stars a different restaurant and chef as Gomez hones her culinary skills: Excursions include Hollywood hotspot Lemon Grove with Chef Marcel Vigneron; Texas BBQ at Moo’s Craft Barbecue with Andrew and Michelle Munoz; a visit with Chef Stephanie Izard at her restaurant Girl & the Goat, and a stop at California soul food restaurant, Alta, with Chef Keith Corbin.

“Selena’s culinary journey has riveted viewers from day one as she has elevated her kitchen skills on her Emmy-nominated series, Selena + Chef ,” said Betsy Ayala, head of content and food at Warner Bros. Discovery, in a statement. “Now, out of the comfort of her home kitchen, but with her best friend for support, Selena’s graduation to the big leagues offers a natural progression of her culinary education as this superstar shows what she can do in a restaurant environment.”

The series premieres on May 2, featuring back-to-back episodes airing at 7:00/6:00 p.m. CT. You can also stream it on Max. For more information about the show and to get some sneak peeks of the episodes, follow Food Network on social media and join the hashtag #SelenaAndRestaurant.

Benny Blanco Says He Was the ‘Last to Know’ He Was ‘in Love’ With Selena Gomez

Benny Blanco Says He Was the ‘Last to Know He Was ‘in Love With Selena Gomez

Of course, he wasn't really the last to know. Gomez and Blanco had been secretly dating for six months before going public with their relationship in December 2023. At the time, the 31-year-old pop star confirmed the rumors on Instagram, telling fans that her fellow musical foodie was “the best thing that's ever happened to me.”

We all have questions!

Selena Gomez, Benny Blanco

Facts.”

We bet Gomez loves her boyfriend’s new nail art.
