Sissu Valley- A tourist place in Himachal!

Sissu, also known as Khwaling, is located in Lahaul, Himachal Pradesh , on the Chandra River's right bank. Visitors may go to Sissu. Lofty peaks like the Gyephang Goh by leaving the North end of the Rohtang or Atal Tunnel surrounds this place. Due to the spectacular view of the waterfall, known locally as Palden Lhamo dhar, it attracts a lot of tourists.

The region is lovely and offers accommodations for visitors. The Hotel Triveni, Hotel Plm Dhara, a few Home Stays, and Goldrop Luxury Camps are Sissu's hotels. These establishments contribute to the area's cool summer vibe.

While the Hotel Triveni, Hotel Plm Dhara, and various homestays offer lodging, tea booths sell snacks. A helipad is also present. The place has a high school, a primary health centre, and a PWD Rest House. A few "chai shops" or tea stands exist.

A little village called Sissu, often referred to as Khwaling, is located in Himachal Pradesh's Lahaul valley. It is on the right bank of the Chandra River, around 40 kilometres from Manali . The coordinates are 32°29′0′′N 77°7′0′′E. 3,120 metres (10,235 feet) above sea level. Koksar has located 14 km (9 miles) to the southeast, while Gondhla has located 11 km (7 miles) to the west.

Things to do in Sissu Valley

Enjoy the waterfall.

It is especially breathtaking to see the waterfall, called locally as "Palden Lhamo dhar," across the Chandra River from the town. The well-known Lahaul deity known as Ghepan/Ghepang or Lord Gyephang resides in the neighbouring town of Shashin. Gyephang Goh is the name of the mountain to the east of the town, which rises to a height of 5,870 metres (19,258 feet). Moreover, Sissu boasts a Helipad and a nearby Lake, both of which are popular with tourists.

Explore Labrang Gompa Temple

Although Sissu serves as the centre of numerous nearby villages, including Labrang, the Labrang Gompa, a Buddhist temple, is accessible to outsiders. For the adjacent villages of Ropsang-Khangser-Gyungling, Gomathang, Yangling, Jagdang, Sarkhang, Shurthang, and Labrang, Sissu serves as the primary town centre. Moreover, the Labrang Gompa in Labrang Village is a Buddhist temple honouring Palden Lhamo. Sissu lies within a few kilometres from the Rohtang Tunnel's north entrance, therefore this area will remain linked all year. As a result, it will grow in popularity as a travel destination in the years to come.

Best time to visit

Between April and August, Sissu enjoys good spring and summer weather, when the fields of potatoes and cauliflower are in full bloom. Winters, which last from November to February, bring significant snowfall and peak temperatures that can drop below zero degrees Celsius. The ideal time to visit Sissu is in the fall, from August to September, when the golden poplar trees start to lose their leaves and the temperature is comfortable. (Around 25 degrees celsius).

Feel The Magic of Autumn in Sissu, Spiti's Best kept Secret

Photo of Divyangna (Nomadic_Missy)

"Autumn shows us how beautiful it is to let things go. Coz LIFE starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall."

I have never experienced Autumn season in full fledged mode while being in city for these years. This year thought to experience it in Spiti. With Atal Tunnel in Rohtang coming in, connectivity has increased many folds and it has become super easy to reach Lahaul And Spiti. If you start from Manali it takes around 30-40 minutes to cross tunnel and here you are in totally different geographical condition directly in Lahaul & Spiti.

October is when Spiti is beautifully covered with Autumn vibes. With Summer fading into Autumn, witnessed the beautiful colours that this season brings. Also, on a road trip you can truely get lost into the stunning views while driving in Lahaul & Spiti.

Drive to Sissu Village Via Atal Tunnel

Best way to explore this side is hire a rental car or bike. We took a cab and started from Manali. Its around 33km drive to reach the North End of the tunnel which lands you in Spiti Valley. The moment you come out of tunnel its a beautiful landscape and all together different geographical condition.

You can stop by road side and breathe in cool breeze. Amazing experience it is. Road is well maintained and perfect choice for a road trip. Sissu Village is around 6 km from Tunnel's North End and first village on that way.

Sissu to Keylong

After spending time in Sissu, head to Keylong which is 30 km ahead to enjoy amazing road trip and Autumn Vibes if you are here in October.

You can visit near by Monastries or drive till Deepak Taal ahead of Keylong.

Sissu- Keylong Road

Photo of Keylong, Himachal Pradesh, India by Divyangna (Nomadic_Missy)

If you wanna enjoy the place fully, would suggest to do 1 night stay at Sissu. There are many guest house and homestays/hotels at affordable price to stay here. Most of them have scenic balcony view as well. Village have population fo around 300-400, so pretty small village but amazing place to stay.

We found beautiful stay with great balcony view for around 1200 Rs at Hotel Aliyas .

Places to Visit in Sissu

You can plan to visit Sissu Lake near Helipad. Also, you can go for Sissu Waterfall trek . Keylong is just 30km ahead, road trip to Keylong is again very beautiful. Feel Autumn vibes all along the way.

Interesting fact about having helipad here, In winters when Sissu and nearby Villages are covered in Snow and life comes to Halt, villagers move to Bhuntar and near by places via Helicopter services provided by Government. Usually these people spend 8 months here and 4 months of extreme winters in Bhuntar side.

Photo of Feel The Magic of Autumn in Sissu, Spiti's Best kept Secret by Divyangna (Nomadic_Missy)

Was lucky enough to find full on Autumn while i was road tripping there in October last week.

Earlier the routine path was Rohtang -> Jispa via Keylong so Sissu was not very much on the way and famous among travellers. But with Atal Tunnel, got way to explore this unexplored Village.

Life Starts over again when it gets Crisp in Fall. Happy Autumn!

Network Connectivity

BSNL works here and JIO is most reliable. I was able to get 20-25 Mbps internet speed with JIO. Airtel didn't work.

Hope i could express fully and did justice to true beauty of Lahaul & Spiti. For much such stories, connect here: nomadic_missy

Explore the stunning Sissu, the hidden paradise of Himachal Pradesh

 alt=

The north Indian state of Himachal Pradesh is a treasure trove of natural wonders that can put travellers from the flatland under a spell.

The snow-capped mountain ranges of Himachal attract tourists in droves from far and wide throughout the year. But sadly most of the travellers only include popular destinations in Himachal such as Shimla, Kullu, Manali and the Spiti valley on their itinerary and leave out certain hidden gems of this beckoning state.

One such not-so-popular but breathtaking spot is the hamlet of Sissu in Himachal Pradesh.

Off beat: Winter falls on a Himalayan village

The Sissu village is one the destinations where tourism activities have picked up significantly with the opening of the Atal Tunnel, which connects Manali to Lahaul - Spiti valley.

The fact that this fascinating hamlet is just less than 40km away from Manali is a real shot in the arm for the tourism sector in Sissu. A 90-minute comfortable drive from Manlai would take you to Sissu. As the picturesque village can be presently accessed with ease, many tourists have started to pencil in the village, which is situated in the Lahaul valley, on their itinerary.

Sissu is on the banks of the Chandra River and close to 10,235ft above sea level. The majority of residents of the Sissu village follow the holy path paved by Buddhism. It is better to stay in Sissu instead of taking a room on rent in Manali as the mesmerizing small town is dotted with exemplary lodging facilities. Scores of travellers are also heading to Sissu, where tourism is looking up, as hotel rooms and home-stay facilities are cheaper compared to accommodation spaces in Manali.

The eye-catching man-made Sissu Lake is on the banks of the Chandra River. The placid lake oozing with the ethereal beauty of nature looks like a huge polished mirror reflecting the blue skies. The snow-capped mountains and the blue sky can have a telling effect on all visitors. You can travel by car or on foot from Sissu hamlet to the awesome water body.

The stunning waterfall, which is near the Leh-Manali Highway, in Sissu, shouldn’t be missed at any cost. The majority of riders travelling through the highway make it a point to halt for a while and enjoy the beauty of the captivating waterfalls. The Sissu waterfall has an eternal charm that attracts travellers in great numbers.
