Latest Review – Derren Brown: Showman [The Lowry] [UK Tour]

derren brown previous tours

DERREN BROWN: SHOWMAN

The Lowry, Salford Quays

Until Saturday 16th July 2022

Whenever Derren Brown announces a new live theatre show there is a real sense of anticipation for what thrills and illusions audiences might experience, however that anticipation is usually tinged with nervousness, apprehension… and possibly dread!

Showman is no different, and sees the multi award-winning master of mind control returning to the stage with his first brand new theatre show in six years, and his most personal show to date.

The task of reviewing Derren Brown’s live shows is always a difficult one as the entire audience are sworn to secrecy to protect the closely-guarded content and secrets of the show, but here goes!

Entering the theatre ahead of last night’s press night at The Lowry that aforementioned sense of anticipation was clear to see (and feel). The atmosphere was tense and a nervous energy simmered about the auditorium as audience members dutifully took to their seats, downing a stiff libation or two for some added Dutch courage.

Following a thrilling introductory segment, Brown takes to the stage and instantly grips with his magnetic presence, captivating his crowd for two and half hours with what proves his most personal and intimate show to date, and one that puts the audience member firmly at the centre of the piece.

As with all his shows audience participation is a key component – and Showman has a lot of it – but fear not, you will never be forced to get up on stage if you do not wish to, and if there are moments of full audience participation that you feel uncomfortable with, simply sit down and enjoy watching everybody else!

Showman may not have the overall scale and scope of previous shows, but it’s a different style of show, with a cleverly constructed narrative that adds real emotional depth to the piece.

Once again working with the expert team of Andy Nyman and Andrew O’Connor (co-writers and co-directors), Brown’s new show is filled with moments of mind-blowing illusion and magic – often inspired by the vintage mentalist tricks and illusions that have proven key components of all his live shows – but with a poignant and moving twist. Showman is a thoughtful, reflective piece that often asks the audience to question their own individual thoughts and feelings, and the master showman delivers it all with his signature blend of humour, wit and razor sharp intelligence.

You have to go to Derren’s shows with a willingness to believe in the unbelievable and open your mind to things you are certain cannot be real, and there are aspects of Showman  that will have you leaving the theatre in genuine awe and disbelief. There will certainly be a fair few sceptics in the crowd, but even if you don’t believe or remain an ardent sceptic once the curtain falls, you surely can’t help but impressed by the flair and showmanship of what proves an exceptional and brilliantly crafted performance.

Go, immerse yourself and be utterly amazed. You won’t be disappointed!

Please Note: The show includes the use of Theatrical Haze and some Strobe lighting effects.

Running Time: First Act: 68 minutes, Interval: 20 minutes, Second Act: 63 minutes

Final Performance at The Lowry, Salford Quays:  Saturday 16th July 2022.

Derren Brown: Showman review – a performance that will blow your mind

Apollo theatre, London The veteran illusionist outdoes himself with an evening of bewildering trickery that holds a mirror to our deepest feelings

H aving followed his stage work for years, I find it hard to take a word Derren Brown says seriously. That’s not a criticism: if his lips are moving, I assume there’s devious misdirection afoot, or some hokum designed to dramatise the next feat of jaw-dropping magic and mesmerism. But my scepticism makes things tricky when Brown moves into the territory of real feeling: love, loss, bereavement. Does he belong there? I felt a little uncertain as he conjured with the most delicate feelings of one or two audience members – and indeed with his own.

Sworn as we are to secrecy at the end, I shouldn’t elaborate – save to say that Brown negotiates adroitly the unease generated when trickery and tender hearts come together. And he does so in the service of another fantastic show, his first in the UK for five years. Is it more amazing than those he has delivered before ? There’s a coup in the closing moments so mindblowing, so laser-guided, to undermine the hold-out scepticism of an unbeliever like me, that I ended up feeling he had surpassed even himself. With Brown and his co-creators Andy Nyman and Andrew O’Connor, we really are in the presence of masters.

What Brown wishes to demonstrate tonight, as he riffs on fathers, filial love and interpersonal relationships, is how connected we all are, even when we feel isolated. One could question how well his routines enact that conceit while still marvelling at those volunteers hexed into forgetting their own names, or at the punter performing complex tricks under hypnosis that he incredulously denies when woken up. Elsewhere, Brown outsources the telepathy to another audience stooge, apparently fast-tracked to black belt-level mentalism by some mysterious process backstage.

Improbable? I’d say. Inexplicable. Usually, yes, give or take one or two familiar stunts at which I might hazard – but only hazard – a guess. You end up, as ever, completely confounded by Brown’s combination of seamless stage magic and eerie ability to read and manipulate human beings – with a touching emotional pay-off, too.

At the Apollo theatre, London , until 18 March

The multi-award winning master of mind control and illusion, best known for his UK television career which began in 2000 with Mind Control, will be returning to the Bristol at the end of May. Derren Brown, is bringing his Showman tour to Bristol Hippodrome as part of an eight-month UK tour - his biggest in 20 years.

Derren lived in Bristol for many years and said "it's like coming home" every time he returns to the city. "It's probably my favourite place to come when I'm touring," said Derren.

The content of Showman remains a closely-guarded secret but Derren has revealed: “The heart of the show is about remembering what’s important. Like how the very things that we find most isolating in life - our fears and difficulties - actually connect us.

“Framed with what I think will be some extraordinary demonstrations of my voodoo”. The audience members for each show are invited to bring a small object of sentimental value to them, but how these personal objects will be used remains a mystery.

Like Derren Brown’s previous shows, the audience will be expected to participate. He will choose audience members by throwing a frisbee, that they can pass on to someone else if they do not wish to be on stage.

Derren said in a promotional video that as the brand new show tours, it is “constantly evolving” with each performance being different. The tour was delayed due to the lockdown but the themes explored have become more relevant as a result of the global pandemic.

derren brown previous tours

Derren said: “The show was due to go on the road the day the first lockdown happened. But the show was about- and still is about- in its heart, how the things that are difficult or feel isolating in life, actually join us together.

“Although it’s not a show about the pandemic at all, it meant that we could go back and lean into the topics that were already there.” He told Bristol Live "it is a very personal show, it has a different feel from the others.

"I'm 51 now, I think it has a more grown up, more mature feel to it too. I always let the things I do grow up with me and try to make them about whatever is important to me at the time.

"It's had the best reviews of anything I've ever done, which is really nice, especially when it's something that means a lot to you, personally as well."

Derren Brown began performing while a student at Bristol University. After attending a hypnotic show held in the Avon Gorge Room of the Students’ Union he decided he would learn hypnosis.

He studied the subject extensively and went on to learn magic and started performing on students before getting bookings at small venues, with his first ever theatre show at the Tobacco Factory.

Derren said: "I used to live up in Clifton Village and used to do magic around the tables in a restaurant called Byzantine in Mary Redcliffe and The Glass Boat on the Welsh Back and the Blue Goose. That's where it all got going.

"The last time I was [at the Hippodrome] I got left a note from Dara O'Brian who'd been there the week before, saying, 'Dear Derren, enjoy the best audience in the country.' So it's not just me either, it's a pretty special thing coming to Bristol.

"I still miss it, I've thought occasionally of moving back but it's always slightly odd when you move back to somewhere, it's almost as if the time in between never happened. Whenever I do come back to Bristol, I walk around expecting to bump into people that I knew and weirdly imagine them the same age as they were.

"I used to hang around a lot at the Boston Tea Party on Park Street, I sort of lived in there. I used to go for walks in Ashton Court and dream up tricks that I would then go out and do, at restaurants and people's parties in the evenings."

Derren’s live shows have won him two prestigious Olivier Awards – for Something Wicked This Way Comes (2006) and Svengali (2012) and he has received more Olivier nominations and wins than any other one-man show in theatre history.

He has played to sold-out houses across the country every year since 2003 to over 1.6M people. Previous shows, Infamous , (2013, 2014), Miracle (2015, 2016) and Underground (2017, 2018) have also enjoyed critically acclaimed seasons in London’s West End.

He has also written several best-selling books. Most recently The Book of Secrets, where he explores the relationship between adversity and personal growth.

Derren Brown will be performing Showman at the Bristol Hippodrome from May 24-28, there may still be some tickets left if you grab them soon. You can find tickets here.

Tour so far

The last two weeks have been a delightful hiatus in Birmingham, a city I really like. It was re-vamped a while back with such pride, and the area around Brindley Place in particular boasts enough great restaurants to keep a foodie like me very happy for a fortnight. Bank Restaurant is top of the list, being where I spent pretty much every afternoon, and Loves nearby was a really excellent new find.

It’s also a great city for the tour, as the staff of the New Alexandra theatre are beyond compare. We are lucky enough to have met some really excellent, super-friendly crews during our tours: the Alex bunch are a particular huge joy. Kim, the general manager, had made me an astonishing photo print as a welcome gift, along with some excellent whisky. More of that please. Thank you everyone there, it’s always such a treat.

The famous Brum friendliness was evident at stage door: numbers are so large outside now that it’s always a bit of a rush, but everyone was super-lovely and didn’t seem to mind. We added a tiny new bit to the show that seems to be working well, on top of the improvements we made back in Oxford. The process of continually trying to improve and tweak is one of the real joys of touring, and of course helps keep the show feeling fresh for me.

I donned the classic hat and shades celebrity disguise for a day-off trip to Alton Towers one afternoon with the gang, and we soared and dipped and vomited on Nemesis and Oblivion and Air and all the rest of them. I rather like 13, for what it’s worth. I like a bit of old-fashioned big dipperiness. A bit of plummeting punctuation to my rides. Nowadays it’s all on the one note, all the same velocity and turny-twisty.

Last year I remember riding everything, including the hilarious and terrifying Oblivion, as many times as I could, like a six-year old high on Fanta, and found later that I had strained my throat with all the tension and nearly lost my voice. So this time I was more careful. (Also, I remember, last year we had Jennie with us, who added stage blood to our faces and blackened up our teeth with make-up so we could look horribly damaged in those mid-ride photographs they sell at the exits. I recommend this game unreservedly.)

The past weeks also brought a night where a chap fainted twice on stage (during, for those in the know, THAT bit). Twice! I’m sure it all looked like part of the show, but it provided the sort of extra excitement that I live for.

Tonight is our first of three nights in Northampton. I believe it’s also home to a Torchwood convention this weekend. I wonder what sort of cross-over demographic will emerge. I’ll watch out for John Barrowman costumes or sudden bursts of ‘I Am What I Am’ in the stalls. (Do I have that right? I honestly don’t have a TV so I don’t really know what I’m talking about).

Righty-ho, carry on about your business. Pleased that the Rapture hasn’t affected show attendance, though I did find myself wondering at a couple of second-half empty seats in the front stalls last night.

The picture shows the rubbish collected from just ONE QUARTER of the stalls the other night. We’re such a filthy bunch.

I do love reading your blog posts Derren, they always make me smile. I have seen Svengali twice and could happily watch it over and over again! The effort that goes into the preparation does not go un-noticed and the energy and enthusiasm you bring to each performance makes it completely addictive. The patience and manners both yourself and your crew show at stage doors night after night is incredible and is not taken for granted. I feel honoured to have met you and the lovely Coops; who stayed for a chat despite being busy. I hope you continue having fun on tour and that the voice holds up so you can really go and ‘knock them dead’ in the West End. Thank you for making the world that bit more exciting and lovely, you are such a babe 🙂 xxx

Oh, oh! I want to know what THAT bit is! Can’t wait for the 20th at Shaftsbury! 😀

ROFLing at the Alton Towers game! Would love to see the faces of people seeing those pictures up on the screens!!!

I sense that the prices of the drinks, chips, popcorn, choclat etc are up to the same level as elsewhere in theatres … You see … I’m psychic .. and however I wished it to be different .. I also sense the brits to lack, indeed, just as much as elsewhere .. especially when they’re not at home …

Stage blood … aah … Can you hook me up with Jennie please .. .. I sense something crazy in her … in me ..

Keep up the good work .. needless to say .. so many people enjoy it ..

Thanks awfully for an exceptionally entertaining evening on the 21st Derren. I was left perplexed and aghast as per usual. Bravo.

Methinks an entry from yourself for DMD2 would be fantastic. You have a penchant for portraits after all. Toodlepip.

Had a fantastic night at the show last night…have waited 7 months to see it and was not disappointed. My husband is a huge fan (he was the one in the tux outside afterwards!) and is very grateful for the signed book and photos! Glad to see your eye was better. Good luck with the rest of the tour xx

Checking that you’ve seen the Charles Rennie M house in Northampton, worth a peek.

You lucky people in England! I´m here in Germany and have to work 🙁 I realy wish to visit the show of Derren Brown he is just great !

Amazing show last night Derren, all 11 of us loved it. Some first-timers in my group and they were blown away as I knew they would be. We all came to belatedly celebrate my 30th birthday and it absolutely made it one to remember having caught a frisbee and found myself on stage taking part. I wish I had had the nerve to volunteer for the first bit but then I got a chance to take part later anyway (fate perhaps? althought I don’t believe in it…) Then you kindly signed things, wrote messages and posed for pics. You are just fabulous and so patient and kind to all your fans who were waiting to see you. I wish you all the best with the rest of the tour xx

Had an amazing night on the 19th, can’t believe me of all people went on stage and was involved in the finale! That night will stay with me for a very long time, it was an amazing show and I felt honoured to be a part of it. Thanks for a night I’ll never forget Derren, and I wish you the very best for the rest of the tour! xxxx

Hi derren any chance of some dates in Kent? Would love to discuss sesonry accuraty and how one can learn to read signs so quickly. No time to calibrate beyond hello. Amazing skills. Great show last night. One last question when you paint is it a time for peace or pondering ideas.

You HAVE to come to Ireland (atleast Northern Ireland!) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Was a brilliant show enjoyed it thoroughly, was in hospital and complained i was gonna miss the show so after lots of whining and a male nurse who loves you overhearing, i got ward leave on strict instruction to come back after the show :). So glad I went, if they didnt let me i probably would have sneaked out anyways 😛

You are a truly charming gentleman Derren! I couldn’t stop myself loving you if i tried. You blow my mind with how hard you work and the amount of thought you give to your fans, you really are incredible. I’m coming to see you in Milton Keynes next year, and i don’t think there’s words to explain how excited i am!! I’m really hoping to get the chance to meet you after the show, it would make my year… no, i think it might just make my life! He he! Sounds like Alton Towers was great, i’m a huge theme park fanatic, roller coaster junkie, adrenaline addict etc, and i live for extra excitement too! I’ve been there too many times to count, but i can’t imagine how fun it would be to go there with you – your gang are unbelievably lucky! Good luck with the rest of the tour. Love Leanne xx

Argh no way! I went to Alton towers that day too(monday 16th may I remember) and saw yourself but I convinced myself that it was a really (really) good look a like so I wasn’t sure whether I should say hello. now I feel like an idiot knowing it was definitely you! maybe next time? ha.

Hi Derren. I saw your show at the Derngate on Tuesday, and I loved it completely. It was my first time seeing you live and I can’t wait until your next tour. I always find that in long shows, my attention starts to wonder after a while but with you, I was totally focused for the entire show, trying to figure out what was coming next. I was startled to find myself locked in the main feature (I hope that’s cryptic enough for anyone who hasn’t seen the show but makes sense to those that have!) it’s a very odd feeling and I can’t get over it. You terrify and fascinate me at the same time and you’d be a very interesting man to share a pint with. Please never stop and come back to Northampton! Kind regards and adoration Luke 🙂
