5-Day Devon & Cornwall Small Group from London

I had a great time on the tour. Our driver Francis really added to the experience with his very extensive knowledge of the places we visited. He was always on hand to assist whichever one of us required a little bit of help to climb the various hills and tors. It was amazing to reach the summit and experience such majestic views.

What a wonderful experience we have had on our “Cotswolds, Castles & Cottages” Tour. Our visit to Sudeley Castle was delightful, Hailes Abbey and it’s historical story was made most interesting by having the portable audio commentary provided by English Heritage, and Chedworth Roman Villa is fascinating to visit. To be in the English Cotswolds countryside is an opportunity which we have been so lucky to have had. It was a delight to walk amongst all these ancient thatched cottages. As our Tour Leader had already told us, the Cotswold Cottages are beautifully preserved and it has been awesome to be able to enjoy being amongst them with their magnificent English gardens full of the perfume of their beautiful Roses and their unbelievable colours, and together with all the awesome varieties of English flowers in these gardens, was admired by us all our cameras have recorded amazing memories.

A delightful trip through the southern Lake District. There were some hiccups in transportation scheduling and communication between the tour operators, so beware of that on self-guided tours. But the accommodations were nice and the rest of trip was fantastic.

‘Tour of a Lifetime’ There are not enough superlatives to describe how superb our tour was with Kevin via Go Tours. I can declaratively say it was the very best trip of my life. I highly recommend this company without hesitation. Tracy, Cornwall Tour

‘Blooms, Brew and Brilliant Glenn’ Calling all flower lovers, tea lovers, history lovers & anyone who wants a day of beauty away from the bustle of London. United kingdom.

Regal. Charming. Scenic.

Comprised of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, the United Kingdom definitely has dozens of reasons worth leaving home for. Mountains, valleys, hills and dales, forests and gardens, oh and no less than 25 UNESCO World Heritage sites scattered throughout, are but a few. You will find a slew of cathedrals, castles, palaces and country houses spanning history. Centuries of inspiring the world, influencing the arts, and forming natural beauty have developed this land into one great nation.

Destination Must-See's

UK ms1

A world in a city is a common way to describe the metropolis of London, the capital of England. A cultural melting pot of over 230 nationalities, London is the financial, political and cultural capital of the UK. It is booming with activity and bursting with sightseeing treasures. You’ll find historic highlights from the haunting Tower of London to the ornate Buckingham Palace and more modern attractions such as the world-famous Harrods department store and the towering London Eye.

UK ms2

The capital city and second most populous in Scotland, Edinburgh has been recognized for its historic and cultural attractions. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the UK after London. Great shopping, historic architecture and great Scottish whisky are just part of its allure. Its greatest draw is Edinburgh Castle. This sprawling medieval castle and fortress sits atop Castle Rock in the city center, dominating Edinburgh’s skyline.

UK ms3

Giant’s Causeway:

At the foot of the basalt cliffs on the coast of Northern Ireland’s County of Antrim lies the stunning Giant’s Causeway. Travelers flock to this UNESCO World Heritage site to experience the 40,000 massive dark columns rising from the sea. The natural phenomena has sparked legends of giants and magic, but its unique geology points to volcanic activity from over 50 million years ago. The Giant’s Causeway is a beautiful sight and the experience of a lifetime.

UK ms4

Cornwall, a region located on a peninsula in southwest England, is comprised of many different towns and villages that feature beautiful beaches and picturesque coastlines. Bordered by the Celtic Sea and the English Channel, one of its most popular towns is St. Ives. This seaside port town just north of Penzance on the coast of the Celtic Sea is known as the art center of West Cornwall and has a sub-tropical feel and beautiful beaches.

Destination Must-Do's

UK md3

England’s Lake District:

Lose yourself in the natural beauty of this mountainous region in northwest England dotted with tranquil lakes. One of the picturesque villages in the region is Grasmere, once home of and inspiration to the romantic poet William Wordsworth. Perhaps you will take a sail on one of the lakes and take in the peaceful backdrop of lush green mountains, serene shorelines and pristine calm waters dotted with tiny islands.

UK md2

Stonehenge:

Walk in the footsteps of so many before you when visiting prehistoric Stonehenge. This mysterious rock formation dates back to the Stone Age and remains one of the world’s most famous sites. Standing in the middle of the most dense complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England, Stonehenge is perhaps the most important prehistoric monument in England. The experience of seeing this timeless monument is not to be missed – it will surely be a highlight of your visit.

UK md1

This large, deep freshwater loch in the Scottish Highlands extends approximately 23 miles southwest of the city of Inverness. Loch Ness is best known for the alleged sightings of the Loch Ness monster. While Loch Ness is not the largest Scottish loch by surface area, it is the largest by volume, with its deepest point at 755 feet. Along the shore, you will find the ruins of Urquhart Castle. This once mighty site rests on the headwaters of Loch Ness and dates back as far as the 13th century.

UK md4

Prepare to step back in time in the English countryside. The Cotswolds are roughly 25 miles across and 90 miles long, stretching from Stratford-upon-Avon to Bath. The region is known for its small towns and villages with homes made from golden colored Cotswold stone and grass roofs that sit among lush greenery and rolling hills. Stratford-upon-Avon is perhaps its most famous town. Lying along the River Avon, it’s famed for being the birthplace of William Shakespeare, one of the world’s great playwrights. Be sure to make a trip to see the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.

Expert Advice

diana

Think “go to the right.” It is their natural flow of traffic even when it comes to walking. It is important to not only look both ways when crossing the street, but also when on an escalator, stand to the right. When walking down the street, stay alert and follow the flow – to the right.

UK e2

Expect to be offered tea, a lot. The British love their tea and not only during afternoon tea, any time for any reason. But you should know there is a “proper” way to drink it. The rules are – sit up straight, do not blow on it, take small sips with your pinky down, and put the cup on the saucer between sips. Now you are prepared to sip away.

UK e3

Bring a raincoat and umbrella, as it rains one out of three days in the UK. It does vary from region to region, but generally speaking, they are important items to have on hand at all times.

I really appreciate having an itinerary that's set for the trip. I've had trips in the past where we didn't plan ahead and it became stressful trying to come up with activities to do. I never feel that way when I travel with Nordic Visitor. Great spots to visit and great company. It was a wonderful trip.

Nordic Visitor provided a Scottish adventure with a good variety of stops at historical and culturally significant locations. I enjoyed the scenery as we went along roads that the larger tour buses could not go. They also accurately worked in the timing to miss the large tours at the sites. I had several of the best meals that were included in the package. Save your time and effort and hire Nordic Visitor to plan your tour.

7. What sort of rooms will I be staying in?

Throughout your small group tour, you’ll stay in places that our travel experts have handpicked for their character, comfort and cleanliness. You’ll also find that we’ve selected each accommodation for its handy location, often within easy walking distance of top attractions.

As you’ll be staying in a mix of historic and contemporary properties, the style and size of your room will vary from place to place. You can choose between single and double rooms for your trip.

It’s worth bearing in mind that, like many places in Europe, room sizes in the UK tend to be smaller than in North America. And as some of these properties don’t have lifts, you might need to use stairs to get to your room.

8. What luggage can I take on a small group tour?

You can bring one suitcase or large bag per person for your overnight items. As this will be stored in the back of the minibus, we also recommend having a small rucksack or day bag. This way you can keep items like your wallet, camera and spare layers close to hand.

Please bear in mind that an aeroplane carry-on or cabin bag will be too large to fit in the minibus’ overhead racks above your seat.

When travelling between overnight stops, your luggage will come with you in the minibus. So we ask that you bring your suitcase from your room to the bus when it’s time for the next stage of your journey.

9. How much legroom will I have on the bus?

On your guided tour, you’ll travel between stops on a minibus we’ve chosen for its level of comfort. And although the vehicles can seat more people, we allow up to just 15 guests to ensure there’s plenty of space.

Most of our minibuses are designed to accommodate the standing height and seating room of someone who’s around 6-feet (1.83-metres) tall. Your guide will also make sure that there are plenty of breaks along the way. So you’ll be able to stretch your legs between the main sightseeing stops.

10. Do you tip your tour guide in the UK?

Tipping your guide isn’t expected in the UK. But if you’d like to show your gratitude for great service by tipping, then we’re sure your guide will appreciate it.

11. Is a small group trip the best way to tour the UK?

When it comes to experiencing the UK with Nordic Visitor, you have options. Picking the travel style that’s best for you depends on the type of trip you’re looking for.

Choose a small group tour and you’ll benefit from your guide’s local knowledge along the way. Plus, with your dedicated driver at the wheel, you’re free to sit back and take in the view. By taking care of any on-trip logistics, your guide also ensures that your Scotland, Wales and England vacation is completely hassle-free.

Uncover even more reasons to go on a European group tour . For instance, joining a group of like-minded travellers can be a great way to explore if you’re visiting the UK on a solo getaway.

Or, if you prefer going at your own pace, why not take the wheel on a UK self-drive trip ? On Nordic Visitor’s Scotland, Wales and England tours, you can embrace the freedom to stop whenever you like while following an itinerary curated by a UK-based expert. Plus, your accommodation, rental car and a hand-marked route map are included in the tour package.

12. Can I extend my tour by a day or two?

Absolutely! If you’d like more time to sightsee, we recommend extending your stay in the UK. You can do this by adding extra nights before or after the guided part of your tour.

At the beginning of your trip, more time in Oxford will let you explore the city’s prestigious university and beyond.

Home to historic libraries such as the Radcliffe Camera and Bodleian, it’s a must if you love literature. You might even recognise some of these magnificent buildings from the Harry Potter films. And don’t miss the opportunity to take part in the local tradition of punting on the River Cherwell.

Meanwhile, you’ll get even more out of your visit to London by rounding off your trip with at least one extra night. Whatever your interests, you’ll find there’s plenty to see and do here. Think browsing museums and galleries, and checking out royal palaces and iconic landmarks.

Once you’ve had your fill of sightseeing, you could relax in lush parks, stroll around cosmopolitan neighbourhoods, or shop for souvenirs. And if you’re a fan of the arts, you could take in a performance at one of London’s world-famous theatres.

13. Can I choose the arrival date?

Of course, you can pick your preferred start date for these Britain tours from a range of scheduled departures between August and September. You could also explore on one of these Scotland small group trips with dates from April to October.

When you’re booking online, you can see each tour’s availability calendar to find out which departures have spaces left.

14. When should I organise my flights?

We recommend checking to see what flights are available before booking your trip. But it’s best to wait until your travel consultant has confirmed your tour by email before purchasing your flights.

It’s also good to know that your tour package includes an airport transfer from London’s Heathrow Airport to your accommodation in Oxford.

We can also arrange a transfer from London city centre to Heathrow Airport for your return journey. You can add this to your package as an optional extra when you book online. Or get in touch with your dedicated travel consultant to find out more.

15. What should I pack for my trip?

You may already know that the weather in the UK is changeable. This means that when you’re packing for your trip, you’ll want to be ready for rain and shine.

Even if you choose to visit the UK in the height of summer, it’s worth bearing in mind that the weather can vary from day to day. Read this guide to when to visit the UK for an idea of what to expect depending on the season.

You could also experience a variety of temperatures based on where you are in the UK. For instance, visit London in August and you could get temperatures of over 30°C (86°F). Meanwhile, at the same time of year in the Scottish Highlands, the average temperature is around 15-17°C (59-63°F).

For exploring the UK’s towns, cities and countryside, we recommend bringing:

  • Comfortable hiking shoes or boots
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Warm, insulated jacket
  • Fleece or woollen jumper
  • Cosy hat, scarf and gloves
  • Light base layers
  • Lightweight trousers or shorts
  • Sunglasses, sun hat and sun cream
  • Smart outfits for dining out
  • Reusable water bottle
  • UK plug adapter

Seemingly tucked away in the corner of the world, the British Isles nonetheless exert a world-wide influence that belies their small size. English literature buffs familiar with Shakespeare, Jane Austen, or the Romantic Poets will relish Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, the Lake District , and Bath, while amateur historians will enjoy visits to medieval castles, the Tower of London and St Paul’s Cathedral. In Scotland, experience the local culture – ‘neeps and tatties’, the Edinburgh military tattoo, and local whiskey ; while in Wales , enjoy our walking tour of its unjustly neglected coastline.

Across the St George’s Channel (Irish sea), our visits to Dublin take in Ireland’s tangible historical remnants – the Book of Kells, O’Connell Street, and St Patrick’s Cathedral – in order to understand its turbulent history. We also offer a trip off the beaten path to see Northern Ireland, including the Giant’s Causeway. And wherever we are, our itinerary always takes time to journey into the British Isles spectacular scenery: England’s Cotswold and quaint villages; Snowdonia National Park in Wales ; the Scottish highlands and Loch Lomond; and Ireland’s Cliffs of Moher and Killarney National Park (on the Ring of Kerry). For those mature and senior travellers seeking a small group tour of the British isles and small group tours of Ireland and Scotland 2020 – 2021 we offer over 100 departures from our small group tour of the British isles collection each year.

Odyssey’s tours to Scotland, Ireland, England and Wales are all an escorted tour with a tour manager often accompanied by a knowledgeable local tour guide. Whether your are on a Ireland tour for the first time or a Scotland tour heading for the Scottish highlands, our tour director will have the itinerary for your sightseeing tour planned out. If you are on walking tours of England Scotland and Ireland, then on this walking holiday your tour manager will have the coach ready for ready for the hike into the countryside, over rolling hills, pausing in quaint villages for lunch. We enjoy preparing for each tour to ensure whatever small group tour or walking holiday you choose that we have prepared for your trip.

When is the best time to go on your UK trip?

The best time to visit the United Kingdom is in spring (late March to early June) and autumn (September to November), when it’s usually warm and dry. You’ll see beautiful spring flowers or the leaves changing hue in autumn, and avoid the much busier summer period.

Why choose a small group tour?

Odyssey specialises in educational small group tours , for seniors , typically groups between 6 to 12 people, and no more than 18 travellers. Odyssey has been offering this style of adventure and educational programs, since 1983.

We offer a wide range of educational, cultural and heritage journeys that expand horizons and broaden the mind. Our tours are designed for active, inquisitive travellers in a small group environment.

What's the accommodation like on a group tour?

In major cities, Odyssey stays in centrally located 3-4 star hotels, with easy access to public transport. In smaller towns or rural areas, we usually stay in family-run hotels or guesthouses. On our long stay tours, during which you spend the length of the tour in a single location, we use serviced apartments.

What ages are the group holidays suitable for?

Whether travelling solo, in a couple, or with friends, Odyssey Traveller caters primarily for travellers over 50, over 60, over 70 or 80 years of age. Therefore, your travelling companions are sure to share your interests. They will want similar experiences in an environment of mutual understanding. We design all programs with the mature traveller in mind. Travelling solo does not mean travelling alone, so when there’s free time to explore you’re sure to have another solo traveler or couple ready to join you if you wish. Single travelers make about a third of our groups and many a repeat travelers!

How big are the group sizes on your tours?

Odyssey specialises in educational small group tours , for seniors , typically groups between 6 to 12 people, and averages at 12 participants per tour, a mix of singles and couples.

First solo trip with Odyssey?

Odyssey offers a collection of genuine small group tour(s) Odyssey tours are priced to reflect that these are small group tours. Typically this means you are part of a small group of 6 to 12 people, not part of a group of 18 or more. Small group means you and fellow traveller enjoying an evening meal around one dinner table. So, we do not achieve the economies of scale of 18 plus on a coach that a larger tour operator would offer, because this is not the type of trip or touring experience our clients seek from us.

Odyssey tours are genuinely based around;

  • A Small group tour of less than 18 people for the mature traveller as holidays for a couple and holidays for solo travellers over 50.
  • Knowledgeable local expert guides and a great tour leader who has an interest in the theme of the tour.
  • Inclusive pricing, including all entrances, tipping and the majority of meals included. That means, no hidden extras with respect to cost. Transparent pricing of the single supplement for the single traveller.
  • A learning based escorted tour with a like minded fellow traveller.
  • Accommodation in 3 & 4 star hotels and self catering apartments.
  • A blend of group learning, touring activities and free time to explore a place further, whether on a discovery or walking holiday program.
  • No name badges or flags to follow when out and about.
  • Travel to places that extend your learning and curiosity, often where others will not follow.
  • Spending typically between 60 to 85% of the operating cost of the tour in the country visited, benefiting the local communities directly.

Do you have any other holidays that aren't with a group?

Odyssey welcome enquiries for private groups, at a minimum of 6 participants.

What is a small group tour?

Tours typically span between two to three weeks in duration. An Odyssey small group tour seeks to stay typically 2 to 3 nights in each location in good 3 or 4 star hotels. These are an escorted tour that have evolved to be a good blend of touring and seeing. As well as opportunities to spend time in key places to take a half or full day break from the group enabling you should you with to be a solo traveller for a few hours or explore with a travelling companion a particular place or take time out for a break, before we travel on to our next destination. For the solo traveller , Odyssey has a expansive range of holidays for solo travellers over 50 to choose from, though we do not offer a regular river cruise or a dedicated solos holiday or solo travel tours.

For the solo traveller there is a single supplement charged on all of Odyssey Travellers small group tour programs. The single supplement reflects the cost of single occupancy of a hotel room with a double bed in your own room (generally, no single bedded rooms are offered across Europe) or a single cabin on a cruise . There are no additional charges made any client booking holidays for solo travellers over 50 years of age, just the single supplement , we like to keep a level of transparency in the prices charged.

Which countries do small group tours go to?

Odyssey Traveller offers tours all over the world. We have a range of tours across Europe , The British Isles , Asia , Africa , The Middle East , and The Americas . We can take you to see the Northern Lights in the outermost regions of Norway. You can travel with us to the jungles of Madagascar to experience its magnificent landscape and wildlife or see the ruins of Machu Picchu in South America . Or take a journey through history with a tour with the theme of Britain’s canals and railways . If you enjoy a spot of cruising, join our Journey through Mongolia and Russia which includes a 10 night river cruise between Moscow and St. Petersburg, or our Egypt tour with an amazing Nile river cruise . If you prefer to stay closer to home, we have a great selection of tours in Australia to Western Australia, South Australia, Northern territory, Kata tjuta Outback Queensland, but not the great barrier reef or Ayers rock, Kangaroo Island but Tasmania as well as New Zealand , visiting both North island and the South Island including the east coast, Rotorua, Milford Sound, and Queenstown.

The people of England

The English character is reserved, quiet, and bit obsessed with the weather. You find characters with a creative imagination and an intelligent sense of humour. And you’ll get on well if you always say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’.

The food (it's better than you thought)

There were jokes about English food. The neighbours laughed at the lack of spices and culinary nuances. But these comments aren’t relevant now. You can now gorge on delicious seafood, indulge in Michelin star restaurants, and eat sumptuous traditional pies.
