Port Denarau Marina is a cruise port in Fiji, located on the privately-owned Denarau Island. The island is west of Viti Levu Island (Fiji's largest) and sized 3 km2 (1 mi2). Denarau Island is connected to Viti Levu (mainland Fiji) via a short causeway. The port is only 5 km (3 mi) northwest of Nadi and 10 km (6 mi) west of Nadi Airport.

Denarau Island is well known for its luxury hotels and resorts, and also with Denarau Golf Course (18-hole). This resort island has several premium hotels, including Hilton, Radisson, Sheraton, Sofitel, Worldmark, Westin. There is a large shopping district with restaurants, supermarket, bakery, beauty salons, cruise and tour operators.

Nadi (on Viti Levu's western coast) has an international airport and premium shopping areas. Cruise ships to Viti Levu Island dock at Port Denarau Marina (Denarau island). Nadi is nearly 200 km (125 mi) from Suva (Fiji's capital), but just 27 km (17 mi) south of Lautoka . Nadi is Fiji's 3rd-largest town, with population over 42,000.

The area surrounding Nadi City has mostly sugar cane fields, and the country's highest concentration of luxury resorts and hotels. Nadi is also popular with Wailioaloa Beach (0,5-mi long brown beach) and Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple (Southern Hemisphere's largest Hindu shrine).

Near Nadi are located Viseisei Village and Waqadra Botanical Gardens (privately owned). From Nadi, cruise ship tourists can also visit Momi Bay Battery Historic Park (guns and bunkers installed during ww2 against an eventual Japanese invasion). Another popular shore excursion destination is Mt Victoria (Fiji's highest peak with height 1324 m / 4344 ft) and its 3 native reserves.

Regularly scheduled ferries from Denarau connect with the island groups Yasawa and Mamanuca, including to premium resorts on the islands Kuata, Wayalailai, Waya, Nanuya Balavu, Drawaqa , Naukacuvu, Yasawa , Naviti , Matacawalevu , Yaqeta , Nacula, Nanuya Lailai, as well as to the island resorts on Tavewa, Malolo, Beachcomber, Mana, Tadrai, Castaway, Tropica, Wadigi, Tokoriki, Matamanoa. Ferry services with departures from Denarau are offered by the companies Awesome Adventures Fiji and South Sea Cruises.

Sightseeing:

If you are a little adventurous I suggest you make the effort to get away from the resorts and visit the villages in the countryside. Be warned 'Fiji time' is no myth, it is very much alive and well, when a Fijian informs you it is a short walk or will take no time at all, it pays to ask a little more information about the distance and what is no time to them.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Port Denarau is the jumping off point for the off-shore island resorts, so lots of day cruises to the island are on offer.

There is also the Bula bus which run between the resorts on Denarau Island, this will take you on a scenic trip around the Island. Fare is about 9 FJD for an all day pass.

A taxi into Nadi will cost about $10. Not really an attractive town but an interesting one.

It pays to compare your cruise line tours here .

Nearby Places:

The Denarau Golf & Racquet Club opened on the 9th June, 1993 with a par 72, 6538-metre resort golf course.

Shopping and Food

Near the port you will find various restaurants, Hard Rock Cafe, a supermarket, bakery, hairdresser's and tour operators.

Communication:

English is an official language and is the language of instruction in education, and is spoken by most in Nadi, Suva and any other major tourist area. On a few of the less touristy islands, English may be spoken with some difficulty. Fijian or Hindustani (Hindi/Urdu) is spoken by most adults and children, and learning even a few key phrases will help you gain the respect of the locals.

Opening Hours and Holidays:

The shops are opened early some from 6.00am and others from 8.00am till 6.00pm to 7.00pm during the week and Saturday from 7.00am to 1.00pm. On Sundays and Public Holidays shops are generally closed but the restaurants, milk bars and other essential shops remain open.

Cruises from/to Port Denarau, Fiji

Port denarau, fiji cruise port.

Cruising through the South Pacific Ocean to the small, private Denarau Island is an adventure in itself, and the cruise port of Port Denarau, Fiji is the first stop on the way to paradise. A resort area famous for upscale hotels and the immaculate Denarau Golf & Racquet Club, it used to be a mangrove swamp before its transformation. Port Denarau was created in 2007 to take care of embarking or disembarking ship passengers. It’s a great place for supplies if touring other islands around Fiji's west coast, as well as a place to hang out other than the swank resorts (although those are only a ten-minute walk from port). While having a bite in the sunshine, you can enjoy live entertainment in the main square or gaze at the luxurious private yachts in the marina. Here are some of our favorite experiences when cruising to Port Denarau, Fiji:

  • A major draw is the lovely Port Denarau Retail Centre. Although not an authentic Fijian “experience,” it caters to tourists looking for clothing shops, as well as grocery items, a pharmacy, souvenir shops, and a post office. You’ll find a duty free shop here as well.
  • While the shopping may be more “mainstream”, finding Fijian cuisine is a little bit easier. Of course, the emphasis is on seafood dishes (cooked with local produce and herbs) available at restaurants within the center. Try the raw tuna or snapper Fijian kokoda, whimsically served in a coconut shell.
  • Although many of the resorts offer a beach experience, it may be hard to find a public beach. If you buy a day pass on the Bula Bus, you can visit all of the resorts and ask for passage to their beach. For a more surefire way to get some sun and sand, catch a charter to the Mamanuca Islands, offshore from Port Denarau.
  • If you want to see something different, visit the Hindu Sri Siva Subramaniya temple. Fewer than seven miles from Port Denarau, the largest temple in the southern hemisphere in nearby Nadi is sure to create a little inner peace.

Port Denarau Fiji

In light of the global COVID pandemic, yachts are limited by where they can travel, how and when. Restrictions and regulations in the industry seem to change by the week.

Fortunately, Fiji took initiative and opened up their “Blue Lane”, which allows yachts and pleasure cruisers to enter the country through Port Denarau.

By following their guidelines, yachties can enter the country after their 14-day quarantine is completed (travel days included!) Fiji is an incredible place to be right now because it is COVID free and working hard to stay that way. Should your vessel decide to travel to Port Denarau, here is what you need to know before you arrive.

Table of Contents

Port Denarau Fiji

Where to provision from Port Denarau

Because Fiji cannot reap the benefits of tourist season, times are trying for this little island. Consider the impact you could have on local businesses when deciding where to provision. The first places listed are locally owned and operated and will cater to your every need to the best of their ability. Fijians want your business and are therefore happy to make you happy.

Provisioners

Pacific provisions.

These guys are new on the scene, but it’s a great company to have on the go for guest provisions. They will provision to Fiji, and also most of the rest of the Pacific. Pacific Provisions are run by ex yachties, so you know you are in capable hands.

They can help with produce, meats and seafoods, dry goods- even guest toiletries!

Check their website out and contact them directly for more information.

There are a few fresh produce provisioners around the port, but a crowd favourite is Farmboy. Many of the produce provisioners import their products and therefore buy massive quantities. Often they push those products even though the quality is subpar. Farmboy sources almost 85% of its produce locally. They even grow much of it on their own family farm! The quality is great and they are willing to give you Fijian produce to play with and recipes to go along should you be interested.

Nadi and Namaka Markets

There are two fresh food markets near Port Denarau, Nadi and Namaka. The Nadi market is located at the heart of the town behind the main street. The Namaka market is located in between the airport and the port. Both offer fresh vegetables, fruit, fish, spices, and kava. The earlier you go the better, especially on Saturdays.

Get there as close to 7 AM as you can for an eye-opening shopping trip. This is a great way to discover native Fijian produce. Don’t hesitate to ask the locals how to cook certain things. They love giving out their family recipes. Make sure you take plenty of cash as most vendors do not accept cards.

Hours: Every day 7 AM-6 PM

South Pacific Butchers

Located a short drive away from Port Denarau, right before the city of Nadi, South Pacific Butchers is an excellent purveyor of fresh, high-quality meats. They have an excellent selection of beef, chicken, and pork. They can also assist in procuring higher quality meats for charters and boss trips as long as they are given advance notice of about two weeks.

Yeastie Boys

Yewy! The Yeastie Boys are hands down the best bakers in the area. They bake out of the ovens from Mama’s Pizza Kitchen right in Port Denarau. From sourdough to low GI to pretzel to bagel, their selection is great for such a small crew. They take orders through text and Instagram direct message & they’re happy to bake certain specialty items for all your provisioning needs.

Wine, Chocolate, and Coffee

Indulge cafe.

Wine, chocolate, and coffee…what more could you want? While there is a liquor store at the Port, this spot is special because the wines are handpicked by the talented sommelier, Alex Weiss. The coffee is brewed locally and can be altered to meet your specific preferences.

They have also recently partnered with Vanua chocolate, a local chocolatier who makes bars with 100% Fijian cocoa beans. They’re also just begun selling Fiji made vodka and gin (and they swear they’re so pure you won’t get a hangover!) This is your one-stop-shop for all things indulgent.

Supermarkets

Located in Port Denarau, the XpressMart is a quick shop for bare essentials. You’ll find pasta, milk, chips, and canned goods here but their variety is limited. This is a great spot for grabbing an extra litre of milk when you run out and don’t have time to do a big store run. It gets the job done but it wouldn’t be the best place to rely on in terms of provisioning for more than a day or two.

Address: Unit S22 Port Denarau, Denarau Island, Fiji

Fresh Choice

Fresh Choice is a great little supermarket located on Denarau Island. It is small compared to the supermarket’s chefs might be used to in larger countries, but hey, it’s Fiji.

Because it is located on the island, you’ll find many New Zealand and Australian products with a few Fijian products sprinkled in. Of all of the supermarkets in Nadi, this one has the most diverse selection in terms of food from different cultures. You won’t find niche items, but you can snag some katsu curry or tamales.

Address: Denarau Industrial Center, Denarau Island, Fiji

Phone: (679)675-0294

Hours: Every day 7 AM-8 PM

New World is one of the best supermarkets nearby. If you go into the city of Nadi, chances are you will be disappointed by the selections in the stores like MaxValue. New World is about a 15-minute drive from the Port and has almost everything you need. Bread, produce, dairy products, cleaning products, you name it. If you want to limit your shopping to one store, this one will leave you satisfied.

Address: Newworld IGA Votualevu Road, Namaka, Fiji

Phone: (679)672-3553

Hours: Every day 8 AM-6 PM

Specialty Markets

If you’re looking for Italian, you’re looking for Flavio. An Italian-turned-Fijian, Flavio owns a small shop that can also be used as a private restaurant. He sells pasta, cheeses, select meats, homemade gelato, olive oils, and more. He also dabbles in his own cheesemaking. Flavio is a great contact for those who love authentic Italian cuisine.

Local Bars & Restaurants

It’s highly unlikely that anyone can visit Port Denarau and not go to Cardo’s. Owned by the beloved Cardo himself, this is a great place to grab a drink after work and maybe even a decent meal. Their fare is typical bar food with a few Fijian dishes thrown in for good measure. They offer karaoke on Thursdays, sports viewings, and live bands every weekend. They even offer breakfast! That best part? You’ll never leave the place without a smile.

Address: Port Denarau, Denarau Island, Fiji

For those looking for a bit more sophisticated, playful cuisine, head on over to Kanu. Owned by chef Lance Seeto, Kanu boasts modern Asian-Fijian fusion. They’re plant-based and vegan inspired, but they do offer meat as an addition on most dishes. They play with native Fijian vegetables and spices in ways that push the envelope and challenge the way most think of Fijian cuisine. Their drinks are more like health juices with a splash of alcohol mixed in. Between the Kama Sutra 69 and the Awake & Numb, the drink will leave you feeling a little healthier, sexier, and tipsier. Follow them on Instagram for happy hour and weekend specials.

Address: 333 Queens Road, Nadi, Fiji

This restaurant is a newer addition to the food scene nearby. Located on Wailoaloa beach, Eat Greek rests at the top of the Ramada. Get there right before sunset for a beautiful view of BAY and delicious Greek cuisine. Enjoy spanakopita, dolmades, gyros, and baklava as well as red & white wines that you can’t find anywhere else. They’ve partnered with Indulge and pride themselves on their unique wine selection. Head there on Friday or Sunday for an extra treat- live music!

Address: Ramada Rooftop Wailoaloa

If you’re looking for good, honest, delicious Fijian food, this is your place. You’ll get traditional soups, curries, rollups, and desserts. It’s a humble establishment located on Queens Road between Denarau and Namaka. It is a staple of the community and almost everyone you meet will tell you that Tu’s is the place you want to go for the real FIjian experience.

Address: Queens Road, Martintar Challenge Plaza, Nadi, Viti Levu Fiji

Getting around Nadi & beyond

Port Denarau is a 15 minute drive from the city of Nadi, the town of Latoka, and the airport. Feel free to walk around Denarau Island and to these destinations, but don’t doubt that a taxi driver will offer to pick you up frequently on your way.

You’ll get to know that taxi drivers by name the longer you spend at the Port. They will all give you their personal phone numbers and some might even invite you home for dinner.

Besides getting around by foot or by taxi, rental cars in Fiji are a great deal. There is a Budget rental center at the Port and at the time of writing, renting a small car for a day is about 60 bula, or 25 euro.

There is a final and very cheap option of catching the bus from the Port into the town of Nadi. It’s not super reliable because Fiji time means no rushing or scheduling. But it is cheap and it’s a good way to meet locals.

Crew Days Off in Fiji

There is so much to do in Fiji if you’re lucky enough to have some time off. Don’t be afraid to ask locals for their advice. They love to see people interested in taking advantage of all their island has to offer. If you’ve got weekends off, try:

  • Diving trips, courses and certifications through Deep Blue Fiji.
  • Drive down to Sigatoka and visit the waterfalls & sand dunes
  • Drive to Suva and explore Fiji’s capital city
  • Spend the weekend at Musket Cove enjoying the beachfront bungalows and Sand Bar
  • Rent a small boat and explore the islands. Don’t forget to take kava to the villages you visit as a sign of respect

For those who might not have as much time, never fear. There’s plenty to do in a day or less.

  • Visit the Garden of the Sleeping Giant and go soak in the natural mud baths and sulfur springs nearby
  • Relax at the Island Day Spa and spend the day getting pampered
  • Hike the Sleeping Giant Mountain
  • Go into Nadi town and see a Fijian rugby game
  • For the daredevil, see Fiji from above and go skydiving

port denarau cruise terminal

Port Denarau itself

Port Denarau is slowly but surely coming back to life as more boats enter Fiji. Although it is a bit quiet these days, you’ll still be able to do some shopping, eating, drinking, and dancing. Stores in Denarau include Ripcurl, Jack’s, Harrison’s, and Cloudbreak. You can find Indian, Italian, Thai, Japanese, and of course, Fijian food. You can stock up on basic shopping items between XpressMart and the new Farmboy shop. And the night scene will always be waiting for you at Cardo’s.

Typical Cruise Ship Terminal

The Port Denarau Marina is your typical cruise ship terminal, with enough shopping and eating options to entertain you for a few hours before or after your cruise departure/return. While not overly extensive, there are some nice (albeit touristy) shopping options. I would have liked to see a few more restaurants/cafes/bars, because they few eating options were not overly enticing. The entire area is spacious, well maintained and very clean. As well, there are plenty of places to just sit in the sun (or shade), enjoy the day and people-watch (if you are into that kind of thing).

We ate at the same place (an Italian restaurant) several times on our stay. The food was delicious, the children were well catered for and it was a lovely atmosphere. A bonus was the evening entertainment of fire-dancers one night!

catch the resort bus only a few dollars so no drink driving. Choice of a few food places, nice choices and easy to get to and a change of scenery away from hotel

Great choice of restaurants, Most are good to very good. Not Expensive. Good atmosphere. and if You use the Bulla Bus, very convenient

nothing much here at all - stay in your resort! Not worth the taxi fare to get there. Hot, dirty and nothing to do early morning at all. Thankfully we found a Pharmacy that sold what we needed, it's only saving grace.

I like the marina for its location and buzziness. Good restaurants and shopping. The staff in the various establishments are bubbly and helpful

Essential Guide to the Puerto Plata Cruise Terminal

I ’ve been on over 20 cruises, and over that time, I’ve visited numerous Caribbean, Bahamian, American, and Canadian ports. But up until recently, I’d never had a cruise stop in the Dominican Republic. So, when I booked my most recent Virgin Voyages cruise, I was excited to stop at the Puerto Plata cruise terminal on our Dominican Daze itinerary. Our cruise shopped at the new port in the area – the Taino Bay Port.

While I was only there for a day, I found Puerto Plata to be absolutely beautiful with delicious food and great people. I definitely want to return to spend more time in the areas I quickly saw.

Disclosure: I paid for my own trip and excursion in Puerto Plata. This post contains affiliate links and a purchase/click through one of these links may result in a commission paid to us at no additional cost to you. All opinions are my own.

Location of Puerto Plata

Puerto Plata is located on the northern Atlantic Coast of the Dominican Republic on the island of Hispaniola (which is shared with Haiti). It’s west of Puerto Rico and south of Turks and Caicos.

The third largest city in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Plata is located about 5 hours from the country’s capital Santo Domingo, and is on the north coast.

Unlike Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic is not a US territory. Therefore, passports are required if you are flying in. You’ll need to check directly with your cruise line to see what form of ID they require. I always cruise with my passport just in case I have a medical emergency and need to be evacuated.

The Dominican Republic is in the Caribbean hurricane belt. If you are cruising during hurricane season, you’ll want to keep an eye on the forecast. There’s always a risk your cruise will be re-routed due to a storm.

If booking Puerto Plata excursions during your cruise, it’s a good idea to book them through the cruise line. That way, if they are canceled, you’ll be reimbursed.

Taino Bay Puerto Plata

Taino Bay Cruise Port is the newest cruise port I’ve ever visited – opening in December 2021 . It was originally the Puerto Plata cargo port and is located right in the center of the action. Many, but not all, of the cruise ships visiting Puerto Plata dock at the Taino Bay cruise port.

If you don’t want to book an excursion or leave the cruise port area, there’s still plenty to do right there. In fact, I’d recommend booking a later or early-ending cruise excursion so you have some time to explore the cruise port before sailing away.

Amenities and Activities at Taino Bay

Here’s some of what you’ll find right in the cruise port. Cruise travelers can spend the day in the Puerto Plata cruise port if you’d prefer not to leave.

A huge pool/lazy river: This is free for guests and a great option to cool off if you want to leave the ship but don’t plan to do a shore excursion in Puerto Plata. Some of the cruise staff on our ship were raving about the lazy river, but we didn’t have a chance to try it.

Shops: Want to do some souvenir shopping in Puerto Plata? The Puerto Plata cruise port offers several specialty shops including jewelry stores (where you’ll find Larimar, exclusive to the Dominican Republic), duty-free shops, souvenir shops, and clothing shops. These are all relatively small, but there’s a good selection of them.

Experiences: There are six aviaries scattered throughout the port. Exotic birds, including Macaw Parrots and the native Amazona Ventralis, can be found in these aviaries.

There’s also Monkey Island , located right in the port. In this hands-on experience, you can interact with and feed adorable squirrel monkeys. This is something you are typically able to just walk up to – you won’t need to book an excursion because you won’t be leaving the port.

Restaurants: If you’d like to get food and drinks off the ship, you won’t have to walk very far. There are several restaurants and bars in the Taino Bay cruise port, including a mojito bar, a rum bar, a coffee shop, and a Mexican restaurant.

WiFi, restrooms, and a last-minute excursion desk are also available at the Puerto Plata cruise port.

Things to See in Puerto Plata

Want to explore beyond the cruise port? There are lots of great things to see and do in Puerto Plata. Highlights include:

The Umbrella Street: An adorable, Instagram-friendly street with colorful umbrellas hanging above. In addition to being a great photo opportunity, there are shops and restaurants along the street.

Paseo Dona Blanca (Pink Street): Within walking distance of the umbrella street is the Paseo Dona Blanca (also known as the pink street). This is also an Instagram-friendly street that is entirely bright pink, with different installations that are great photo backdrops. Both Umbrella Street and the Pink Street are an easy walk from Central Park (Independence Square).

Macorix House of Rum: If you love rum, you’ll want to do the tour and tasting at the Macorix House of Rum. It includes a movie about rum making, a walk through the barrels, and a tasting of a bunch of different rum flavors. There’s also a gift shop where you can purchase your favorites at a great price.

Fortaleza San Felipe : As you sail into the Taino Bay cruise port, you’ll see the Fortaleza San Felipe, a historic Spanish fortress.

Ocean World Adventure Park: An ocean park offering animal encounters, a beach, a restaurant, and more, Ocean World Adventure Park is a popular destination for cruise ship passengers.

Puerto Plata Cable Car: If you want to see beautiful views of Puerto Plata from above, visit the Puerto Plata Cable Car. The ride will take you up to Mount Isabel de Torres, a National Park.

Playa Dorada : Want to visit the beach during your day in Puerto Plata? Playa Dorada (the golden beach), is a great option. This is the area where many of the Puerto Plata resorts are located.

Damajagua Waterfalls : This park, which is best via by cruise ship passengers via an excursion, offers 27 waterfalls (although excursions typically include visits to 12). You’ll be able to swim, jump, and more. Here’s one excursion that is well-rated .

Dominican Amber Museum : Puerto Plata is well-known for its beautiful amber. If you want to see it up close, you can visit the Puerto Plata Amber Museum .

Puerto Plata Shore Excursions

You’ll have lots of options for excursions in Puerto Plata if you decide to leave your cruise ship. Excursions will vary by availability and cruise line, but here are some options listed below.

Keep in mind that if you book an independent excursion not through the cruise line, it’s your responsibility to make sure you get back to the ship on time. If you book the excursion through your cruise line, they will be responsible for making sure you get back.

Food Tour: During my most recent Virgin Voyages cruise, we did a Puerto Plata tasting tour that I would highly recommend. We started at the Macorix House of Rum, where we were able to taste multiple varieties of rum.

We then headed to three popular restaurants – La Skina Restaurant, Mares Restaurant, and Casita Azul, to try some location cuisine. Before going back to the port, we stopped at the Pink Street and the Umbrella Street. It was led by a local guide and was an official cruise ship excursion.

Ziplining : Looking for a little more adventure? Some excursions go to the Wild Play Adventure Park where you’ll be able to zipline over the ocean and enjoy some time at the beach.

Beach Day : Want to visit the beach? One excursion on our sailing was to Coconut Cove Beach where sailors had the opportunity to enjoy drinks, lunch, and time at the beach. There was also a separate excursion to Fricolandia Beach Club.

Damajagua Waterfalls : There were a number of different excursions to Damajagua Waterfalls. One includes ziplining, swimming, sliding, and a ride in a buggy. There’s also one that includes off-roading.

You’ll probably find a number of other excursions during your visit to Puerto Plata. Think about the type of experience you’d want to have and find a well-reviewed excursion that fits. If you aren’t sure, a guided city tour of Puerto Plata is always a good idea so you can get an overview of the area.

Amber Cove Puerto Plata Port

I mentioned above that many cruise ships dock at the new-ish Taino Bay cruise port. However, there are more than one cruise ship terminals – some ships dock at the Amber Cove cruise port. Opened in 2015, the Amber Cove cruise center was developed privately by Carnival Cruise Line.

Amber Cove is sort of a combination between a port and a private destination. There’s lots to do within the port , including a water park area, shopping, watersports, and more. Excursions are also an option, if you’d like to explore beyond the Amber Cove cruise port immediate area.

Frequently Asked Questions

During our food tour, we had the opportunity to try bandera dominicana (translated to Dominican Flag), a dish that includes fried plantains, rice and beans, chicken, and some fruit. We also had a delicious soup with rice.

Popular drinks include the local mamajuana – a drink made with rum, honey, and wine, as well as local rum.

The Dominican Republic uses the Dominican Peso. US dollars are typically accepted, which makes it easy for a quick cruise port stop. Credit cards are accepted in some locations.
