Day 2:  Tour the Alcazar

Start off your day with morning breakfast at the Farmhouse before your first day of site seeing.

Imagine what it must have been like to be King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella in the mid-1400s as they entered the majestic Alcazar (a UNESCO World Heritage Site).  The Sevillian palace was built on the site of a residential fortress.  It is the oldest, still in use, royal palace in Europe today.

You will tour the intricacies of the entire palace as well as the huge and inspiring gardens.  We will stop for lunch in the garden before continuing on with the tour.

Day 3:  Tile Painting and Seville’s Grand Cathedral

Have you ever wanted to know the origins of Spanish tile making or where the Flamenco got its beginning?  Well today we will explore the neighborhood of Triana, the birth place of both!

We invite you to tour a traditional Spanish tile making factory where you will paint your own personal tile to take home.

After lunch we will tour the magnificent Cathedral of Seville, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and see the wonderful architecture and original frescos by Murillo, the Spanish painter.  You will also see where Christopher Columbus is buried.

Use the late afternoon to people watch with a glass of wine or sangria at a local tapas bar or shop the trendy Calle Serpas.

Day 5: Cordoba – The Mosque, the Alcazar and the Medina Azahara

Come along with us to the enchanting city of Cordoba to bear witness to the spectacular Mosque and Alcazar, where Isabella and Ferdinand established one of the first permanent tribunals of the Spanish Inquisition.  Both UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

After lunch we will take a short drive to visit the Medina Azahara, another UNESCO World Heritage Site that was built from 936 to 940 as the de facto capital of Al-Andalus, or Muslim Spain

Santa Cruz - iStock-544803238.jpg

Day 6: Santa Cruz Neighborhood and Traditional Flamenco Dance

After a hearty breakfast at the Farmhouse we will then proceed to the heart of Seville, the neighborhood of Santa Cruz, to tour the myriad of narrow streets, small traditional shops and lots of eateries.

In the evening you will be treated to Seville’s finest and the oldest flam enco performance venue “Tablao Flamenco Los Gallos”.  Revel in the machine-gun rapid-fire foot stomps of the male flamenco dancers and the elegance of the female dancers with their beautiful dresses and the traditional gipsy chanting of the Flamenco songs along with their unique guitar playing.

Plaza Espana - iStock-583972036.jpg

Day 7:  Tower of Gold, Plaza de España and Traditional Lunch at Maria Luisa Park

We will integrate with the locals today as we make our way to the Torre de Oro (the Gold Tower) that controlled the entrance and departure to Spain’s inner regions.  From there we will make our way to the Plaza de España built for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929 and where you will find some of the best examples of tile work created in the Triana district for the exhibit.

We will then leave for a traditional lunch at one of the very typical restaurants near the Plaza de España.

BTN_SVL Seville.png

Day 8: Ronda

Today we will move our base of operations to the historic city of Ronda.

We talk a lot about walking in the footsteps of the locals, in this case, the locals are American artists like Ernest Hemingway and Orson Welles, who spent many summers here as part-time residents of Ronda’s old-town quarter called La Ciudad.

We invite you to tour this city with one of its local residence , who will take us through the back allies of the town and share its history.

After lunch we will tour the Jamon museum and watch how experts slice the Iberian ham.

I guarantee you will fall in love with the town of Ronda!

Estate in Ronda.jpg

Day 9:  Relax at the Estate or Tour Ronda

We invite you to relax at the Estate today, time to take a dip in the pool, sample tapas and collect your thoughts on what you have seen so far during this trip.  Work with our personal artist and writer for tips on how to capture your mind’s images on to paper or how to collect your thoughts around what you have seen so far.

Should you want to return to the town, for more site seeing or shopping, our driver will take you there.

Enjoy a traditional dinner prepared by our Chef at the Estate.

Alhambra - iStock-467906724.jpg

Day 10:  The Alhambra, Granada

As if one magnificent palace wasn’t enough for the Spanish Royals, join us on a tour of the Alhambra in Granada.  It is, without a doubt, the most renowned building of the Islamic Andalusian region and a UNISCO World Heritage Site.

A spectacular site that you will be hard pressed to ever forget, it integrates the Islamic along with the Renaissance styles into one harmonious, elegant and impressive palace.

We will also step into the downtown area and enjoy lunch and some shopping at some of their local artisan shops.

antequeradolmens.jpg

Day 11:  Dolmens of Antiquera

Do you ever wonder why the ancient people created Stonehenge in England and why there, of all places?

Well, it turns out that Stonehenge is not unique!  Spain has something equivalent and it is called the Dolmens.  Located in the nearby town of Antiquera we find three unique sites that rival Stonehenge.  Recently declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, we invite you to step into these three megalithic monuments.

We will cap off the day with a tapas dinner at the Estate.

Sandeman Cellars - iStock-467101890 (1).

Day 12:  Jerez de la Frontera

Join us for a short trip to Jerez de la Frontera where you will attend a beautiful Andalusian riding horse show and exhibition.  We will then make our way over to one of the finest Sherry cellars Sandeman.  You will learn the history of how Sherry is made and sample their wines along with some tapas.

We will then travel back to the Estate so that you can prepare for your return home the next day.

Day 13:  Buen Viaje!

We will depart Ronda at 7:30 AM for the drive back to Seville, either the airport or the train station, for your departures home.

As we say here in Spain, “Buen Viaje”, or Good Travels to all our new friends!

Countries Visited

Places visited, suggested duration.

Spain's World Heritage Sites are more than just historical markers. They're alive with tradition and resplendent beauty, 44 of them unveiling a country of evocative history and mesmerizing culture. This handcrafted tour visits 18 of them, sublimely connecting a kaleidoscope array of masterpieces. Roman, Renaissance, Gothic, aristocratic opulence, medieval fairytale towns; every day provides an innovative paradigm of Western history and Spanish enticement.

Customizable Itinerary

Barcelona - modernist art nouveau in the heart of barcelona.

Salty Mediterranean air mixes with laughter from al fresco terraces. Narrow streets ascend past boutique designer stores and early 20th century theaters, every building different yet part of a harmonious jigsaw. The world knows Barcelona as Gaudi's city, but he wasn't the only art nouveau pioneer. After a short airport transfer you're welcomed to Spain with a lunch on La Rambla, a street that's alive with artists and performers. You spend the afternoon exploring the works of Lluis Domenech i Montaner, an architectural pioneer who blended functionality with outrageous decorative exuberance. Start at Casa Lleo I Morera; the elaborate facade is sandwiched between terraced houses and is an introduction to Montaner's style. Then stand bewitched at Hospital de Sant Pau. Only decommissioned in 2009, there is lots of evidence of the building's functionality; yet everything is sprinkled with the master's touch: window frames, corridors, drainpipes, ceilings, always something unusual and majestic to juxtapose.

Sant Pau represents the dedication to the Catalan modernist art nouveau. It wasn't architecture for the rich. This is a hospital. It's the first World Heritage Site on your itinerary. Along nearby streets you go for an early dinner of pintxos , a northern version of tapas enjoyed in atmospheric bars of pastel shades. Then orchestral symphonies welcome you to Palau de la Musica Catalana, a gloriously mystical space littered with statues and artwork. Sit down as the conductor raises his hands. This iconic Montaner music hall is all the more impressive when the music starts to play. After the live performance you're transferred to your hotel.

What's Included:

Barcelona - The Catalonian Treasures of Tarragona and Vimbodi

The walls of Tarragona stand picture perfect, two rows of Roman stone alcoves running straight and true through the heart of a modern city. While Tarragona is irrevocably 21st century, the remains of Roman beauty are not lost. Gaze at the amphitheater and take care as you descend the giant steps. Admire an ensemble of Roman relics, many of them hidden away but carefully preserved, like the untouched Roman walls inside the Museu Nacional Arqueologic de Tarragona. Rather than put relics in a museum, Tarragona built a museum around them.

In the afternoon you drive to Vimbodi, stopping for a traditional Catalan lunch en route. Today's second World Heritage Site is the Poblet Monastery, an aristocratic burial place and one of Europe's largest religious buildings. Lion sculptures lie at the feet of rested kings while carved dogs guard the Queens' tombs. Now head upstairs, where views onto the Prades Mountains compliment the journey into royal excess and monasterial asceticism. Return to Barcelona in the late afternoon and the rest of the day is at your leisure.

Barcelona to Madrid: Exploring the World of Antoni Gaudi

Park Guell is resplendent in morning light, a dozen potential stops available for your breakfast picnic. Columns swirl and walkways curve, taking you through Gaudi's living masterpiece. Like Montaner, Gaudi elegantly blended functionality with dazzling design and ingenuity. And like Montaner, his work is not merely to be admired and photographed. This is a park for people, a place to enjoy breakfast with serene views over the city. The early start always ensures you can explore before the rush of midday tour groups.

Today is dedicated to Gaudi: his eternal dream is next on your Spain tour. Stand before the Sagrada Familia, still in construction after 130 years yet already on the UNESCO list. While the odd crane may spoil the photos, they serve as a reminder of the project's ambition. Step inside as gothic mystery leaves blurs and whirls everywhere. Everything seems to move, somehow blending into itself. Every wall, every side, every inch is unique, yet somehow symmetrical in this cathedral of wonder. After lunch on a seaside terrace, spend the afternoon discovering Gaudi's less famous works, the residential houses commissioned by Barcelona's elite. Casa Mila, Casa Vicens, Casa Batllo; each is Gaudi at his most experimental and opulent.

In the late afternoon you're transferred to the train station for a first class rail journey to Madrid. This is one of the world's fastest train journeys and it takes less than three hours to cover the 630 kilometers. Complimentary drinks and snacks are served as rural Spain rushes past. A new guide greets you in Madrid and transfers you to your hotel.

Madrid – Royal Palaces and the Alluring 15th Century Alcala de Henares

Madrid's streets dance with authenticity, everything alluring Spanish in the capital. A social ambiance abounds; innumerable squares are filled with chatter and promises of tranquil days. Bookshop cafes and independent stores line the streets, every corner bringing another ode to anti-commercialism. Soak up Madrid's atmosphere in the morning, before your tour of the city's regal masterpieces. There are two UNESCO Sites to discover today, starting with the 15th century precinct of Alcala de Henares, the world's first planned university city and the blueprint for many famous American colleges. The original buildings line pathways of fountains and nattering students, each square block of buildings remarkably consistent in their displays of grandeur. A cute cafe within the complex makes for an ideal lunch stop and chance to settle into the history.

San Lorenzo de El Escorial is equally radiant, a dome and two towers guiding you into the royal palace. Mixing fervent Christianity with regal opulence, El Escorial can take hours to really explore. Some rooms are odes to God, bursting with biblical paintings and Catholic history. Others are odes to indulgence, gold leaf and silver etchings shining without inhibition. Like every day's tour, you're transferred in a luxury Mercedes with a driver guide. The pace is relaxed and the itinerary can be altered at any time. For example, your guide will have many ideas if you wish to dine near the palace rather than near your hotel in Central Madrid.

Madrid to Toledo to Madrid – A Day of Roman History and Fascinating Chronicles

It’s a royal start on today's visit to two World Heritage Sites. The Palace of Aranjeuz is Spain's version of England's Buckingham, an ostentatious display of wealth and indulgent tastes surrounded by vast lawns and gardens. Head inside to rooms of jewels and painted ceilings, then spend an hour in the tranquil gardens, a flask of coffee a perfect compliment to sculpted hedges and blossoming flowers. Now to Toledo, its Roman foundations now filled with churches, mosques, and synagogues. Few cities have even been so peacefully diverse, three religions developing side by side for over 1000 years. There are two ways to enjoy Toledo; either tour the iconic monuments and memoirs to history with your guide, or slowly explore the streets and absorb the centuries of relics. This is a great place to enjoy an early dinner before returning to Madrid. Both Toledo and the Palace of Aranjeuz are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Segovia to Avila - Immense Walled Cities in Ancient Spain

Say goodbye to the capital and you weave into rural Spain. For the next four days you journey across the country's historic walled towns, each with its roots in a different century and architectural style. First you will head north, where the Roman aqueduct of Segovia stretches far across the town. It's one of the largest complete Roman buildings in the world. Now, on to Avila, where thick fortress walls and tiny turrets guard the tiny old town. Go through the gate and it's all quiet, rows of pedestrianized streets left unspoiled since the 11th century. Dozens of churches are crammed into the Town of Stones and Saints, their bells ringing as you relax on the Plaza Mayor. Your hotel is indelibly placed within the fortress. Take your time and explore at leisure.

Salamanca – Renaissance Beauty in the World's Oldest University Town

What was once a Gothic spire, and a Renaissance palace, is now a restored mosque in original Moorish style. Next you are introduced to the modern side to Salamanca; the rows of Baroque houses weave through the central streets. Each corner brings another century. Inside a cafe hangs a 17th century portrait. Down a cobbled alley there's the site of a Roman well. Like all the towns you explore over the next few days, Salamanca is not merely a UNESCO Site to be captured. It's an indelible memoir to Western history, one that's best savored at your own pace. After the drive from Avila, spend the day within the Old Town, barely anything new to break the heritage spell.

Caceres – Unique Gothic and Islamic Architecture

One day the buildings of Caceres will surely fall, millennia of history tumbling down into the valley below. But right now they look like a postcard, their white facades gleaming beneath the sun. Head through the city walls and the streets take you on a journey of mystery, each alcove and window representing the innovation of the past. Caceres makes for an enchanting afternoon and evening lost in time. Dozens of Islamic minarets dominate the skyline, but enter the city and you find streets of Italian Renaissance. Occasionally a Gothic church appears from nowhere, or an exotic slice of the East jumps out. Like always, your hotel is idyllically perched amongst the beauty of a World Heritage site.

Merida to Guadelupe – The World Heritage Sites of Extremadura

Merida appears like a travel dream, pillars and sculpted sphinxes starting the journey through Roman reverie. It's all here: a semicircular amphitheater with steep steps, a forum of engravings and carved busts, a bridge of 2000 year old stone, a dazzling row of columns rising two stories high. Merida is Spain's most complete Roman city, a vast ensemble of archaeological relics and a place where most people take thousands of photos. Spend the whole morning here, including a lunchtime terrace with a panorama onto ancient Rome. In the afternoon you travel to Guadalupe, site of one of the world's most influential monasteries. It's a vast site famous for the Guadalupe Virgin, the symbol used by Spanish explorers in the evangelization of the Americas. A specialist guide provides the narratives of this royal monastery before you spend the night at a hotel with glorious views over 13th century walls.

Day  10 - 11

Seville – Relaxing in the Passionate City of Seville

Seville's streets are passionate and full of color, a multitude of reds spreading around every corner. Waiters deliver coffee with flourishes of flair, women's dresses ripple with vivacity, and the city immediately pulls you into its ambiance of enthusiasm. After moving from old town to old town, you spend the next two days relaxing in Seville, exploring at leisure and taking advantage of the Andalusian flavors. Three UNESCO Sites are dotted around the city; the Cathedral and its crypt holding Christopher Columbus, the 13th century Alcazar, and documents of America’s colonization found in the archive. A three hour tour of these sites is included and can be enjoyed at any time over these two days.

Cordoba – Exotic Glimpses of the East in 7th Century Cordoba

The journeys are short now that you're in Andalusia, the selection of World Heritage Sites all within an hour or so of each other. But their proximity hides their diversity. Cordoba takes you to the East, its mosques and Moorish streets a glimpse of exoticism rarely seen this far west. Arabic calligraphy fills elaborate walls, the infinitesimal engravings roaming around door frames with messages to Allah. Narrow houses rise high, leaning into each other with patterns of grace. Even the smells are foreign: masala chai, saffron, markets that reminisce of the city's history. After a guided tour of the Great Mosque of Cordoba, spend the day exploring at leisure.

Granada – Moorish and Renaissance Remains in Andalusia

Your final day epitomizes the experience of World Heritage Sites in Spain. All three are very different, evoking an iconic period of history and exuding the atmosphere of a forgotten time. Ubeda and Baeza are this morning's destinations, each spilling shimmering Renaissance architecture onto streets of fascination. Visit one building, or two, or three, each laced with a pioneering style that was destined to sweep across the country and Western Europe. Next you head to Granada, a site of exotic fortresses and Moorish influence, one that twinkles with ingenuity and promises nothing mundane. This is your final evening so a farewell dinner is included. Gaze across at the Generalife Palace as a banquet of Andalusian tapas is served, 18 different dishes representing the 18 UNESCO World Heritage Sites you've visited in Spain.

Granada – Departure

A final trip by luxury Mercedes takes you a few miles across the city to Granada Airport for a domestic flight to Barcelona. Wave farewell to your guide and Spain; you are already planning a return to check off the other 26 UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Detailed Description

Forty-four UNESCO World Heritage Sites are dotted across Spain, each absolutely unique in their evocation of world history. Only two countries have more. And neither India nor Italy can rival Spain's breathtaking diversity. Inspiring architecture, Roman towns, Moorish history, Gothic cathedrals, art nouveau hospitals, and Renaissance palaces: there's no single paradigm as you explore Spain's beautiful odes to civilization. These are not merely historic landmarks and eye-catching attractions, or places to be admired from a photographer's distance. They're alive. Walled cities dance with intrigue as you wander along cobbled stone. Renaissance artwork consumes aristocratic halls, and an atmosphere of charm follows your journey across Spain. Historic buildings have been converted to hotels and there's never a moment when the spell is broken.

Over these two weeks you visit 18 different World Heritage Sites and half a dozen World Heritage Cities. Travel from Gaudi's Barcelona to regal Madrid, before weaving a trail through the walled towns of Castile and Andalusia. There's no filler. Each day features one or two UNESCO recognized exemplars of Spain's splendor. Every night is spent in the heart of history, whether that's the pedestrianized streets of a quaint hamlet or an al fresco terrace gazing at elaborate palaces. Spanning 2000 years, these sites form the foundations of Western art, architecture, and culture. They aren't imitations. They're the original blueprints from which the world took its inspiration.

During three days in Barcelona you explore cutting-edge architecture, discovering the Gaudi and Montaner's modernist art nouveau movement. A day trip to Tarragona and Vimbodi reveals Roman remains and the monasterial burial place of countless monarchs. A high speed train takes you to Madrid in first class comfort, where aristocratic palaces and historic university towns are just a sampling of the highlights. Despite the succession of sights, there's enough tranquility and leisure time to keep the pace relaxed. These 18 sites have been chosen as they're easily connected and represent the rich diversity of the country. A driver guide in a luxury Mercedes conducts each day's tours, minimizing the travel time and enabling you to dictate the pace.

From day six onwards you meander through rural Spain, getting a taste of the country's historic walled towns and mysterious cities. Flair and panache dominate streets of tradition as you travel from the 8th to 13th and then to the 19th century. Immerse yourself in the wonders of Salamanca and Cacares, then cross alluring valleys to Extremadura and Andalusia. Expert guides provide fascinating chronicles on Moorish castles and royal monasteries, the sites continuing to move through the eras. Your final three overnight stops are Sevilla, Cordoba, and Grenada. Each reflects the passionate history of Spain, yet knows how to lie on the evenings of charm.

Day 1: Málaga to Granada: Embracing the Villages of Southern Spain & the Alpujarra Mountains

Pampaneira Village, Alpujarra, Spain

Your tour commences with your arrival at the bustling Málaga International Airport. Here, a warm welcome awaits from your dedicated driver as you step through customs. From the airport, we’ll venture towards the captivating Alpujarra mountains that immediately transport you to a different world steeped in rich history and natural beauty.

Our first stop is Lanjarón, renowned for its mineral-rich mountain springs and rejuvenating spa. Immerse yourself in this tranquil town and indulge in the healing waters, a staple of the local culture and a balm for the weary traveler.

From Lanjarón, we’ll continue our ascent, with the journey taking us through a series of enchanting villages – Pampaneira, Bubión, Capileira, and finally Trevélez. Standing proudly as the highest village in Spain, Trevélez bears the unique distinction of its history and Iberian ham. These villages stand as a testament to the Moorish culture, which thrived here until their expulsion in the mid-1500s.

In Trevélez, we’ll stop by a local ham shop, where you’ll have the opportunity to taste the region’s renowned Iberian ham, renowned for its exquisite flavor nurtured by the cold, dry climate. Enjoy the unique flavor profile of this celebrated Spanish delicacy, a must-try experience for any food lover.

The Alpujarra Mountains are a paradise for nature lovers, with stunning walking trails that invite exploration. We’ll allocate some free time for you to soak in the mountain air and discover the natural wonders at your own pace.

As the day draws to a close, we’ll proceed to your hotel in Granada, arriving in time for an early dinner. This marks the end of the first day of your Spanish journey, giving you a tantalizing taste of the extraordinary experiences that lie ahead.

Day 2: Mystical Granada & the Enchanting Alhambra

guided tour group at courtyard in Alhambra palace.

On your second day, prepare to step back in time as we delve into the heart of Granada and explore the renowned Alhambra. Your dedicated guide will greet you at the entrance, and your journey to the 11th wonder of the world commences, a voyage that takes us back an astonishing 900 years.

Your exploration of the Alhambra Forbidden City starts with the illustrious Gardens of Paradise, where you will witness an array of botanical wonders within beautifully manicured landscapes. As you amble along, you’ll move towards the formidable Alcazar Fortress – an imposing monument steeped in history. As a vital part of the Alhambra, it has stood as a silent witness to countless narratives over the centuries.

From there, the journey leads you to the globally-acclaimed Nasrid Palaces, an architectural marvel that stands as a testament to the grandeur of yesteryears. Each room and courtyard of these palaces carries its distinctive character and story.

As the tour of the palaces concludes, indulge in a delightful medieval Nasrid lunch at the distinguished Parador San Francisco restaurant located within the Alhambra’s walls. Savor authentic dishes that represent the rich culinary heritage of the region.

Later in the day, your driver will rendezvous with you near your hotel for the next leg of your tour. We’ll head towards the Gypsy caves in Sacromonte, just on the outskirts of Granada city. Here, experience an enchanting evening with a performance of authentic Flamenco guitar and dancing, a vibrant display that embodies the spirit and passion of the region.

To end your day on a high note, partake in a tranquil moonlit walk through the cobblestone paths of Albaicín. This walk will lead you to some of the most stunning views of the Alhambra, further enhanced by the soft glow of the moonlight. This magical day ends here, as the Alhambra’s silhouette fades into the night, etching itself into your memories.

Day 3: Renaissance Gems: Úbeda & Baeza

Baeza cathedral in Spain

Today we set out from Granada to uncover two of Andalucía’s most treasured Renaissance jewels: the captivating towns of Úbeda and Baeza. This day trip will offer you an enchanting experience, weaving through the tapestry of Spanish history and architecture.

Our day begins at Úbeda, a charming town elegantly perched on a hill overlooking the sweeping valley of the High Guadalquivir River. This town is renowned for its historical importance and stunning architectural wonders. As we stroll through the old town, we’ll pass a myriad of aristocratic houses, grandiose palaces, and exquisite churches, each with its own tale. A notable stop will be the El Salvador Chapel, a prominent example of Spanish Renaissance architecture and a testament to the city’s rich cultural past.

Our exploration continues towards Baeza, the capital of Olive Tree cultivation. Baeza captures the essence of the region with its vibrant streets, where intricately carved stones create a striking contrast against the backdrop of whitewashed houses. Our journey through Baeza leads us to the majestic Cathedral, a beautifully preserved piece of history that leaves a lasting impression with its monumental architecture.

After the tour of the Cathedral, take some leisure time to immerse yourself in the local culture. Treat your taste buds to the local cuisine, where the flavors of traditional dishes will offer you a deeper understanding of this region’s gastronomic heritage. After a day filled with new experiences and discoveries, we return to Granada, carrying the memorable impressions of Úbeda and Baeza with us.

Day 4: Córdoba - Unraveling the Threads of History

Cordoba, Spain

Venture westwards from Granada to the city of Córdoba, a destination steeped in history, culture, and exceptional architectural splendor. Once recognized as the most culturally advanced city in Europe, today, Córdoba serves as a living monument to its captivating past.

Your day commences with a pleasant meet-up with your guide in the hotel lobby, followed by a smooth drive to Córdoba. The guide will lead you on a fascinating tour, offering a vivid narration of the city’s intriguing historical tapestry.

The cornerstone of our tour is a visit to the magnificent mosque, which, following the Reconquest in 1236, was transformed into a cathedral. As you step inside this awe-inspiring architectural marvel, you’ll be entranced by stories of sultans and commoners who joined hands to build this symbol of their shared heritage.

The tour proceeds to the Jewish Quarters, a district distinguished by its tight-knit neighborhoods, whitewashed houses, and vibrant red gardenias. These quarters have a historical significance as the home of jewelers, adding to the city’s diverse cultural fabric. Your guide will explain the reasoning behind the Jews’ compact living conditions and elaborate on their unique customs.

To conclude our insightful tour of Córdoba, we’ll step inside one of the few surviving synagogues in Spain, offering you a glimpse into the country’s Jewish heritage. Following the tour, take some time to explore Córdoba at your own pace, uncovering its hidden gems and charming streets.

As the day descends into the evening, prepare yourself for a mesmerizing experience at the Alcazar Gardens. Nestled on the shores of the Guadalquivir River, the gardens come alive with an enchanting spectacle of lights and water, providing a grand finale to an unforgettable day in Córdoba.

The village’s fascinating history, combined with panoramic views of the Guadalete River below, makes for a captivating first stop.

Our adventure continues to Grazalema, a charming village in a natural park. Surrounded by pristine landscapes and abundant wildlife, Grazalema is the perfect place for a gentle hike along a tranquil stream. Following your exploration, take some time to unwind and enjoy a hearty lunch in this quaint setting.

Post-lunch, our journey carries us to Ronda, the birthplace of modern bullfighting. Here, you will step inside the hallowed grounds of the bullring, immersing yourself in the drama and tradition that embodies this deeply-rooted Spanish custom. Ronda is also famous for its iconic Puente Nuevo (New Bridge), a stunning architectural marvel that spans a deep gorge, providing a dramatic link between the city’s old and new quarters.

Once across the bridge, we continue our exploration of Ronda, venturing down cobblestone streets and into the impressive Collegiate Church and Don Bosco’s Medieval Palace. As the sun begins to set, you will return to Sevilla, carrying with you a wealth of memories from a day spent discovering the authentic soul of Andalusia.

ANDALUSIA: ART, LANDSCAPE AND PEOPLE

Many are the peoples, religions and cultures that since prehistoric times have arrived from the Mediterranean to the south of Spain.

Important reminders of the Carthaginians, the Romans, and the Hebrews still remain, but what will most draw our attention are the remnants of the Arab civilization, its great capitals, magnificent monuments and the respect they enjoyed during more than five centuries, as well as the influence they bore on the Christian culture.

Only in this way can we explain the villages, the art, the society and the landscape of modern day Andalusia.

UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITES IN CENTRAL SPAIN

When Alfonso VI conquered Toledo in 1085, the Christians were able to begin to organize what would be at the end of the Middle Ages the heart of a vast empire.

The entire area between the Duero and Tajo Rivers would be filled with cities inhabited by proud nobles, an authoritative church and bellicose kings ever more powerful. We will see their origins, their splendor and their projection towards America.

These and their excellent state of preservation allow us to find five historical districts along this route that have earned the designation of World Heritage sites: Toledo, Cáceres, Salamanca, Ávila and Segovia.

WINE AND GASTRONOMY IN SPAIN AND PORTUGAL

“Basques stew, Castilians bake and Andalusians fry”… but they all partake of wine, cheese and sausages. You will have the chance to visit different wine areas in Spain and Portugal.

It was during their march to the south through La Rioja that the Christians first integrated Mediterranean agriculture: the olive grove, the vineyard and the irrigation system. For centuries this junction would be both a disputed territory between the people of Castile and Navarre, and the centre of cultural creation; for here is where the language of Spain was born, where the Route of Santiago de Compostela was consolidated, and where superior wines were nurtured.

Due to its particular geographic location and climate, the region of Castile and León is renowned for its Iberian ham and sausages, while the Duero River serves as the source of such notable appellations or origin as Ribera del Duero, Cigales, Rueda and Toro, extending into Portuguese territory where Port Wine and Vinho Verde are produced.

Sephardic Jewish Heritage

Searching for the Jewish roots of Al Andalus. The Jewish Sephardic Heritage to be found in the roots and archives of the history of Andalucia is undeniable. There is a recent resurgence in interest and investigation into the Jewish past of this fascinating period of history.

We have developed this tour carefully and sensitively as we have been piecing the puzzle together ourselves. This itinerary is based on our findings and readings. As we take in many of the highlights of this stunning region, we will be basing our tours and cultural visits on Andalucia’s intrinsic Sephardic Heritage and how Al Andalus was a meeting place and melting pot of three great cultures and religions; Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

Until their expulsion in the Edict of 1492, Sephardic Jews had been an integrated and valued part of the culture of the Three Religions. The Catholic Monarchs gave them two choices; leave or convert. Jews, rich and poor were made equal and forced to either adopt Catholic tradition or find a new home. Most left with the Muslims and travelled over the Straits to North Africa; others travelled to Constantinople, Portugal or Greece. They left behind their possessions and property, their beloved towns, cities and villages.

In this tour, we travel through the memory of the Sephardic past and uncover the riches of that time in history. Only in investigating, accepting, understanding and processing the past, do we make way for the future. Solo travellers are always more than welcome to join our tours, we guarantee you will be made to feel welcome and included.

When is Eid al-Fitr 2024 and how is it celebrated?

The three-day festival celebrates the completion of the fasting month of Ramadan by Muslims across the world.

Interactive_Eid_2024_outside image

As a new moon was not sighted on Monday evening after Maghrib prayers, Muslims in Saudi Arabia and neighbouring countries will fast one more day, completing 30 days of Ramadan. The first day of Eid will then be celebrated on Wednesday, April 10.

The first day of Eid al-Fitr is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon marking the start of the month of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar.

Lunar months last between 29 and 30 days so Muslims usually have to wait until the night before Eid to verify its date.

Other countries follow independent sightings.

When the sighting has been verified, Eid is declared on television, radio stations and at mosques.

How do Muslims celebrate Eid?

Traditionally, Eid is celebrated for three days as an official holiday in Muslim-majority countries. However, the number of holiday days varies by country.

Muslims begin Eid day celebrations by partaking in a prayer service that takes place shortly after dawn, followed by a short sermon.

On their way to the prayer, which is traditionally held in an open area, Muslims recite takbeerat, praising God by saying “Allahu Akbar”, meaning “God is great”.

It is customary to eat something sweet before the prayer, such as date -filled biscuits known as maamoul in the Middle East. This particular festival is known as the “sweet” Eid – and the distribution of sweets is common across the Muslim world.

Muslims usually spend the day visiting relatives and neighbours and accepting sweets as they move around from house to house.

Each country has traditional desserts and sweets that are prepared before Eid or on the morning of the first day.

Girls and women in many countries decorate their hands with henna. The celebration for Eid begins the night before as women gather in neighbourhoods and large family gatherings for the application of henna.

In some countries, families visit graveyards to offer their respects to departed family members right after the morning prayers.

It is common for Muslim-majority countries to decorate their cities with lights and hold festivities to commemorate the end of the fasting month.

Eid amid the onslaught in Gaza

For some 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza this Eid, this will be the first Muslim religious holiday after more than 33,000 people have been killed in Israeli attacks. With little food aid, and very limited water, Gaza’s Eid al-Fitr will be mired in destruction amid the continuing attacks.

What are common Eid greetings?

The most popular greeting is “Eid Mubarak” (Blessed Eid) or “Eid sa’id” (Happy Eid). Eid greetings also vary depending on the country and language.
