Sparta have announced a 2023 US tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of their debut album, Wiretap Scars . The outing will feature support from ’68, Thursday singer Geoff Rickly , and zeta.

It’s technically the belated 20th anniversary of Wiretap Scars , which was released in August 2002. The album features the single “Cut Your Ribbon” and the epic fan favorite “Air.”

After initially announcing the first leg which runs from May 4th in Mesa, Arizona, through a May 19th show in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Sparta unveiled two more legs, including a June run and a July/August jaunt. All told, the tour now spans 40 dates, concluding August 12th in Dallas.

Tickets for the first leg are already available, while the second two legs go on sale this Friday (April 14th) at 10 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster . Fans can also look for deals or purchase tickets to sold-out shows via StubHub , where orders are 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s FanProtect program.

Sparta was formed in 2001 by members of At the Drive-In after the latter band’s initial breakup. After a couple of hiatuses and multiple personnel changes, frontman Jim Ward and bassist Matt Miller remain Sparta’s only permanent members, as they play shows with a touring drummer. The post-hardcore act’s most recent album is a 2022 self-titled effort .

It’s a tough gig being the sensible ones in a band fronted by complete mentalists. Jim Ward, Tony Hajjar and Paul Hinojos probably had it tougher than anyone else as the rhythm guitarist, drummer and bassist (respectively) in one of the most influential punk bands of the last twenty years, At The Drive-In. It says a lot about the sheer amount of chaos that they created that the only reason why their new band Sparta could ever be considered sedate is in comparison to them. On their own merits, Sparta are a seething, pummelling post-hardcore band whose sound, equally accessible and serrated, lends itself perfectly to the live arena, with Jim Wards given far more room to show off what an expressive and commanding voice he has than he ever did in his old band. The bands live performance is also far more focused than the band that they made their name in, which means that every performance they put in is passionate, intense and deeply exciting. Not to mention how this band remains very much a cult concern, so every show they put on is a chance to see some of the true pioneers of underground rock do what they do best mere metres away from your very eyes. The band are currently busy making their fourth album but once they return they’ll be better than ever and a truly unmissable sight for any fan of emotional, intelligent rock and roll.

It was great to see Sparta after so long. They started off not appearing to take themselves very seriously (which I don’t like), but before long I could tell the music got to them. They have so many great songs! The crowd was really into the show and the sold-out venue added to the environment. I hope they come back!

Sparta have announced more US tour dates to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Wiretap Scars . These dates join their previously announced US dates in May with ’68 and Geoff Rickly playing support. SPARTA Announce 2022 North American Fall Tour with The Get Up Kids

Tickets are on-sale this Thursday at 12PM ET / 9AM PT.

Sparta, the El Paso band featuring Jim Ward , has today announced they will head off on tour with The Get Up Kids on their 25th Anniversary Four Minute Mile tour. Sparta are the direct support and the dates kick off in Dallas on August 22 with stops in LA, SF, NYC, Boston, Seattle & more. A full rundown can be found below.

In 2020, Sparta released Trust The River on Dine Alone Records which was their first full length studio album since 2006's Threes. Ward has since released his first solo album Daggers, also on Dine Alone Records.

When it comes to his long and fruitful career in music, Jim Ward is not guided by vanity or money or some grand narrative in which he's the central player. It's all about the song, the melody, the lyric. So in late-2017, when he began making heavier, more riff-laden music, he rang his Sparta bandmate of more than 20 years, bassist Matt Miller , and began work on Trust The River.

Beyond Sparta, Ward has performed in various bands and under several monikers over his long and winding career- from the iconic post-hardcore band At The Drive-In, his alt-country project Sleepercar, to a slew of solo albums.

What to Expect

The first stop is at Corinth Canal. The Canal cuts through the narrow Isthmus of Corinth and separates the Peloponnese from the Greek mainland. Nowadays it has little economic importance and is mainly a tourist attraction. Free Entrance. 

Continue your trip and arrive at the modern city Sparta , built in the exact spot where ancient Sparta was.

Pay tribute to the Tomb of Leonidas , or Leonidion, a 5th century BC monument, where according to tradition the remains of Leonidas have been buried.

Walk at the Archaeological Site with the Spartan Acropolis where you will admire the Late Roman Wall surrounding the hill of the citadel, the Agora,  the temple of Athena, one of the largest Roman theatres, a 10th century A.D. Basilica and the dedicated museum.

The view from the top of the Acropolis with the city of Sparta on the left and the imposing Mt Taygetos on the right is astounding. Entrance to the Site is free, the Entrance to Sparta Museum is 2 euro per person.

Right after, get amazed by Mystras , a UNESCO listed site, an astonishingly well-preserved medieval town, built in 1209 AC.

Mystras is perched on the slope of Taygetos,  5 km from the city of Sparta.

Your tour in Mystras will start right on top of the Geoffrey of Villehardouin Castle with a stunning view. The entrance to Mystras is 12 euro per person.

The next stop is the Museum of the Olive and Greek Olive Oil where you will see rare fossil olive leaves, 50,000-60,000 years old, and get inspired by the culture, history and technology of the Greek olive oil and soap production through the centuries. The entrance fee is 4 euro per person and on Tuesdays, the museum is closed.

Corinth Canal or Isthmos

A bit more than an hour later we arrive at Corinth Canal, drilled between 1880 to 1893, separating the mainland from the Peloponnese but also connecting the Ionian sea to the Aegean sea.

The idea of a canal first occurred In 600 BC by Periander, who built a ship railway, where small boats could be carried on wheeled cradles running in grooves. Today, the Canal has steep limestone walls about 300 feet from the water level to the top of the Canal but is only 70 feet wide at sea level.

Classic stadium tour.

Regular tour of the epet ARENA with an official club guide. You'll have the opportunity to visit the press centre, journalist's platform, Sparta's locker room and the team bench. At the end of the tour, a surprise awaits you in our fan shop.

Another great way to get to know the Letná Stadium is a unique tour accompanied by a former Sparta player. Together, you will visit places you can't get to as a regular spectator. You will open the areas where press conferences are held, see the stadium through the eyes of TV commentators, visit the VIP lounge or the players' facilities. You'll have the opportunity to walk through the tunnel onto the pitch and take photos of the field of play directly from the dugouts. All this accompanied by a former player who will share with you behind-the-scenes stories and experiences he had not only in Sparta, but also throughout his career.

This tour was spectacular and Yorgos ( George) did such a great job in terms of getting us around and coordinating the hotels, but his claim to fame was the meals gosh each was unique, delicious, and either a speciality of the restaurant or region. Yorgos goes the extra mile ,for example, helping folks that needed a prescription, or getting some earrings for one of the folks that forgot them. The inside joke is that Yorgos knows everyone whether a restaurateur, shop owner or some random person who sees him and catches up. The tour Guide he organized, Vivi, was also great, she is knowledgeable and not adverse to telling two sides of a controversy, her passion and understanding of Greek history is impressive, also sharing Greek culture.

This is Sparta...!

I had a relaxing time on the: This is Sparta, tour of the 2 south (middle and eastern) peninsulas of Pelopennese Island. Visiting ancient National Monuments, old world villages and hidden beach coves everyday for swimming sometimes twice. The old route on the east side peninsula followed as close to the ocean as possible where big buses can't go, was just like a personal road trip by myself. Having lunch everyday at scenic outdoor cafes by the beach was also nice. I really enjoyed this trip of the remote back roads of Pelopennense Island and will always be in my memories.

Highlights of Ancient Greece

This was a wonderful tour! It covers a great variety of sites, across Greek history. We also enjoyed beach time! Our guide, Eva, did a fantastic job and handled unexpected things with ease. There was a strike one day at she learned about it in advance and shuffled the schedule, so we still got to see everything, but it didn’t feel overly rushed, nor did the strike day feel empty or wasted. Our driver, Alex, was equally great and maneuvered our bus through tight spaces and winding roads with ease. The hotels were surprisingly nice, more than I expected from group tour 3* hotels, all with A/C. All of my rooms, but one, had a balcony and most had a fantastic view! All of the beds, but one, were very comfortable and the breakfast was good at the vast majority of hotels.

What a terrific tour! We explored Athens and its antiquities and many towns and sites off the beaten path on the Peloponnese peninsula. Some highlights included the Acropolis museum, wine tasting, spending a night in a medieval castle, the Diros caves, great food and hotels, and so much more. What made the tour so special was the tour guide, Athina, who was a walking encyclopedia of Greek history, culture and mythology., which enriched all of our experiences. George, the tour owner, was our driver and he added charm and color to the trip. Loved the group and highly recommend this tour.

The attractions were fantastic. Paul, our tour director was knowledgeable of the places that we visited. He's organized and on-time. He's funny which makes our tour more enjoyable. The accomodations were great!
