MACHU PICCHU, A PLACE FOR GREAT EXPERIENCES.

  • Recently, a couple chose Machu Picchu as their honeymoon destination and the CuscoPeru.com team was responsible for making everything perfect. At first, our passengers had many doubts, since it was the first time, they had visited this marvelous citadel; Incertitude such as the entrance ticket to Machu Picchu, the Ollantaytambo train schedule and many other details that, like every traveler at some point in their journey, they need to know. Doubts were resolved quickly and the trip was a dream for them.
  • A beautiful family, made up of dad, mom and 03 kids of 10 -13 -15 years came to know Machu Picchu a family dream, which we knew to complement in previous days with other activities such as horseback riding in Cusco, a bicycle trip through Ausangate and Rainbow Mountain in addition to other activities that made all family members completely happy.
  • We received recently a very famous speaker who arrived on the first flight to Cusco and had to return on the last flight. The experience was fantastic for Him and for us an important challenge. We had to accommodate the schedules in the safest way so that it arrives on time on their return flight.

EVERYTHING YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE TRAVELING TO MACHU PICCHU

We know you have many questions, traveling to Machu Picchu is easy, but you should consider certain important points to make your experience in Machu Picchu the best.

What is the difference between the 4 circuits of Machu Picchu?

Machu Picchu has 4 New Circuits designed to enhance your experience without overcrowding certain areas of the archaeological site. We invite you to watch the following video where we explain more about these circuits.

Circuit 1 allows you to observe the Guardian's House, near the spot where you can take the classic photo of Machu Picchu. From here, you can also see other points of the citadel, including the Temple of the Sun viewpoint, the Granitic Chaos, and the Pisonay Square.

Circuit 2 is the most comprehensive and recommended, as it covers Circuit 1 and allows you to take the iconic photo that will immortalize your trip. Additionally, you get to enjoy many more archaeological sites such as the Temple Square, Intiwatana, and the Sacred Rock.

Circuit 3 goes through the lower part of Machu Picchu, offering a different view of the Inca citadel. It also allows you to observe archaeological areas such as the qolqas, the agricultural zone, and the Inca House complex.

Circuit 4 is more comprehensive than Circuit 3, as it covers Circuit 3 and gives you the opportunity to observe symbolic places such as the ceremonial fountains, the set of water mirrors, and the Temple of the Condor.

We invite you to watch the following video where we explain more about these circuits:

Is it better to enter Machu Picchu in the afternoon or in the morning?

There are 9 entry times to Machu Picchu, which you can choose depending on the time you arrive in Aguas Calientes. Below are the details of the schedules:

Entry times at 6, 7, 8, and 9 in the morning to Machu Picchu For these schedules, it's necessary to depart very early from the city of Cusco, considering that the vehicle journey takes 1 hour and 30 minutes to the train station in Ollantaytambo. From there, we will take the train that will take us to the town of Aguas Calientes in a 1 hour and 50 minutes train ride. If you don't like waking up very early, you can travel a day before and stay in Aguas Calientes to avoid getting up too early.

During these times, there are not many people, and the visit is calm and pleasant, offering a different perspective compared to other schedules. You will also be able to appreciate the Intiwatana at this time.

The schedules at 10, 11, 12, and 1: It is likely that the influx of people will be more abundant. If you were planning to take the classic photo without people around, it might be a bit more challenging. The sun will be at its highest point, shining directly on the sanctuary with great intensity. However, it also has its charm, as the sky will be clear, and you will have a better view of Machu Picchu.

In the afternoon, at 1 and 2 in the afternoon: Some consider this the best time to visit Machu Picchu due to the sunset between the mountains, covering the citadel of Machu Picchu with its last rays. It's a perfect panorama for photography, and the weather is cooler. You can travel on the same day; there's no need to be in Aguas Calientes the day before, but keep in mind that you will also arrive in Cusco a bit late, around 10 to 11 at night.

Can I bring luggage into Machu Picchu?

You are not allowed to carry luggage; you can only enter with a small backpack measuring 40x35x20 cm (16x14x8 inches) to carry small personal items.

What can I take to Machu Picchu?

  • Identification document used to register for entry to Machu Picchu.
  • Windbreaker jacket.
  • Rain poncho (according to the season).
  • Trekking shoes.
  • Insect repellent.
  • Lightweight clothing.
  • Sunglasses.

What can´t I take to Machu Picchu and what are the prohibitions?

  • Carrying backpacks, bags, or purses larger than 40x35x20 cm (16x14x8 inches).
  • Entering with food.
  • Entering with any type of alcoholic beverage or while intoxicated.
  • Carrying walking sticks, umbrellas, parasols, portable seats, tripods, camera or cellphone stabilizers, or any other extension or stabilization element for filming and/or photography.
  • Drones are prohibited in Machu Picchu.
  • Entering with animals, except for guide dogs.
  • Feeding domestic or wild animals.
  • Entering with any type of aerosols.
  • Engaging in any type of graffiti.

Learn more at www.machupicchu.gob.pe about the restrictions when visiting Machu Picchu.

What is the best season to visit Machu Picchu?

The visit to Machu Picchu is available all year round, but many consider the months of May, June, July, August, September, and October as the perfect season to travel to Machu Picchu. During these months, the sun shines brightly in the mornings and evenings, with a refreshing breeze.

In November and December , the rainy season begins again, and the landscapes gradually turn lush green while the evenings become colder. Although some days may surprise you with rain, the tours continue as usual. Machu Picchu takes on a different appearance, with mist covering the sanctuary, adding a touch of mystery as it dissipates in the air. While exploring Machu Picchu, it might get very cloudy or even rain at some point, but you can still enjoy your tour with a poncho or waterproof jacket. Many visitors actually enjoy visiting Machu Picchu in the rain more than on a sunny day because it offers a unique perspective of this wonder of the modern world. If you are not a fan of rain, it is more likely to clear up after 11 am, increasing your chances of finding Machu Picchu with clearer skies.

In January, February, and March, the rains are more frequent. During this period, it is considered the low tourist season, which has a significant advantage if you plan to travel during these months, as there will be fewer crowds. On the other hand, the advantage is that the landscapes are lush and the weather is cooler compared to other seasons. If you have already decided to travel during this season, we advise you to buy your tickets to Machu Picchu for the time slots starting from 11 am, as this increases the probability of finding Machu Picchu with clearer skies. The average number of rainy days per week varies from 3 to 4 days, and some days the rain may be light but last the entire day, while other days it might only rain for a few hours but with greater intensity. In the early morning hours, Machu Picchu is usually cloudy during these months.

Keep in mind that we are in the Andes, and the weather here is very unpredictable. Nevertheless, the information provided aims to give you a close approximation of the climate during each season. We look forward to your visit, CuscoPeru.com will have everything organized for you, and we have many satisfied passengers who have enjoyed the experiences and services we provide all year round.

How far in advance should I book my ticket to Machu Picchu?

Although it is possible to reserve your ticket to Machu Picchu one day before your visit, the most recommended approach is to make your reservation at least one or two months in advance . The number of entries is limited, and it is advisable to book in advance. If you plan to visit Huayna Picchu ( WAYNAPICCHU ), consider reserving it three months before your visit.

These recommendations are essential to ensure that your experience at Machu Picchu is the best, especially considering that popular tickets, such as the Machu Picchu circuit 1-2 and Huayna Picchu, sell out very quickly.

In case you couldn't book in advance, the solution for travelers is to purchase tickets with alternative circuits, such as circuit 4 or 3 . With these options, you will still get to know Machu Picchu, but you won't be able to take the classic photo or visit some specific spots. You will have the chance to explore the temples and see Machu Picchu from the lower areas.

During certain times of the year, it might be challenging to secure last-minute tickets due to high demand. It can be uncomfortable to try and reserve your entry, so our recommendation is to plan well in advance and get in touch with our agency to ensure your visit to Machu Picchu. Contact CuscoPeru.com, and we will be delighted to assist you.

What recommendations should I take to prevent altitude sickness?

The most recommended way to prevent altitude sickness is gradual acclimatization, which means ascending moderately to adapt to the decreasing oxygen levels as you gain altitude. We advise spending at least one day in Cusco without engaging in extreme physical exertion to acclimate to the high altitude.

Taking care of your diet is also important. Eating light, easily digestible foods will aid in the acclimatization process.

Staying hydrated is crucial; make sure to drink at least 2 to 3 liters of water while you're in Cusco. Get a minimum of 8 hours of sleep daily before your tours to keep your body rested and avoid excessive physical exertion. As a natural remedy, you can drink mate or herbal infusions that aid digestion during your stay.

My highlight was the Inca trail. Exhilarating, energy sapping but awesome. The guides on the trail were simply the best. Without their guidance, motivation and expert knowledge I don't think I would have made it. I don't think G-Adventures can be beaten.

This tour operator is top class! Although I booked a 5-day tour in Cusco and Machu Picchu only like a month before my trip, they worked quickly and efficiently and achieved to organise everything as described. Hotels, transfers and guides are all first class and I felt completely safe as a solo traveller. Although I did not speak Spanish, I never left out since all our tour guides spoke also English. Waldir, the mastermind of the whole organisation, contacted me daily and was ready to help if needed and give useful tips and advice regarding the itinerary. The communication was perfect. The itinerary was absolutely balanced and exciting! As Waldir told me on the way back to the airport, it is not customary in the traditional language to say goodbye, only "until we meet again". Thank you Waldir and the whole team of Kantu Perù Tours for the incredible moments and the once-in-a-lifetime experience, and until next time!!!

Premium Peru Tour

Premium Peru

Loved Peru. I found the people take great pride in their cities, culture and history and it shows in how clean the streets are, how great the food is and how wonderful the guides are. Loved the wildlife, the scenery and archeological sites too. My only downside was the airport.. Delayed flights and when trying to return home, no signage to show the directions from domestic (Cusco to Lima) to international section of airport. When I asked for help, I was told to go out the door, come back in the door next to it, only to find out that I needed to go outside, go to section adjacent and then go upstairs to departures which also had no sign there for "international departures". The LATAM staff gave me the run around on my luggage. One person said it would go automatically to Newark another said pick up your luggage in Lima and transfer to United. My luggage never arrived in Lima nor in Newark. When I arrived in Newark the United people said that LATAM was lying as it is never sent on directly and had to be collected and transferred by hand in Lima. I had to file a lost baggage claim upon final arrival in Canada . Still waiting for news.

06 Days Cusco Machu Picchu - Humantay Lake And Rainbow Mountain

A really well organised tour and a lovely hotel in Cusco. 3 consecutive days of really early starts (0400 pick up) after late finish can be quite taxing. Destinations are sensational. Would recommend spreading the tours over more days or having overnight stays closer to the destination rather than always returning Cusco. Also advise arriving early in Cusco to acclimatise as the altitude can be a problem.

Ultimate Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu - 5 Days

I recently got back from this vacation, and all things considered, it very well may have been the nicest trip I've ever been on. The landscape is out of this world, the people who work here are kind and helpful, and TreXperience has been of assistance as well. However, Monica, our tour guide, was the one who really made a difference. If you had the choice, I think you should take her. The journey is not going to be easy, but it is not going to be impossible either. However, once you reach to Machu Picchu, you won't remember any of the hardships along the way. Unseen, I am confident in recommending it.

Amazing trip, I can guarantee you’ll have a great time on the five day trip! Manuel was a fantastic guide, always taking care of us and showing us the best of the Inca trail and always making it fun and interesting! We had varying levels of fitness in our group and he guided us with patience and good humour. His in-depth knowledge of the history, geography and local environment was amazing. I loved Machu Picchu, also some of my favorite experiences from the trip were Warmiwañuska or the views from Phuyapatamarca that we experienced as a smaller group. If you are wondering which company to book your Trek with, please, look no further, You just found it. Thank you so much Inkayni Team!! <3

Hiking The Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu & Sacred Valley Tour

Hiking The Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu & Sacred Valley

Inkayni Peru Tours provided a fantastic experience for us on our trip to Peru. Upon arriving to Cusco, Inkayni staff picked us up from airport and that day in the afternoon we got a briefing with our fantastic guide Jose, he explained all about each day of our itinerary, the next day we did the visit to the Sacred Valley, in Chinchero we learned about the andean textiles. It was an amazing experience! Jose was amicable and super helpful, to a degree I would never expect anywhere. We (family of 4) first did some small tours with our guide, visiting Incan remains around the city. After that, we did the 4 day Inca trail hike to Machu Pichu which was absolutely wonderful. We saw a variety of other tour groups during the route of different tour operators that had workers older, I was so happy we lucked out and booked our trip with them because the porters were not too older. Inkayni team exceeded my expectations from the beginning and I would definitely recommend them.

Inca Trail Express Tour

Inca Trail Express

The meals were amazing, the porters worked really hard to make our journey seamless. The guide was ok, but should have been 2 and not 1 as the slow people in the group held up the rest of us. The itinerary provided by intrepid prior to the journey was not accurate, especially when it cane to the tipping amounts. The itinerary advised a tipping amount of 120-180 with a certain distribution for our porters and chefs, yet our guide advised a much higher amount with a completely different distribution.

How to Get from Cusco to Machu Picchu

Published by sarah vaughan on july 31, 2022 july 31, 2022.

There are a few different ways to get from Cusco to Machu Picchu in Peru. Having planned our own trip to the mysterious mountain fortress, we know that sifting through all the information online and figuring out which option is best can be incredibly confusing. In this article, we’ll break down several different ways to get from Cusco to Machu Picchu, complete with all the prices and details you need to know before booking your trip.

How to get from Cusco to Machu Picchu

So you’re planning a trip to the iconic Machu Picchu, a magical fortress resting precariously among the clouds. But the first step is figuring out how to get from Cusco to Machu Picchu, and honestly, it’s a bit confusing!

There are several different ways to get from Cusco to Machu Picchu, each involving multiple modes of travel and stops along the way. Luckily, we’re here to make the route from Cusco to Machu Picchu less mysterious than the origins of Machu Picchu itself!

First thing first, it’s important to know that there are no public roads to Machu Picchu . The nearby town of Aguas Calientes provides the only access to Machu Picchu. Unless you’re taking a multi-day trek, you’ll first have to make your way to Aguas Calientes, before taking either a short bus ride or steep hike up to Machu Picchu.

In addition, the only way to get to Aguas Calientes (again, besides trekking), is via train from the town of Ollantaytambo, which sits in the heart of the Sacred Valley between Cusco and Machu Picchu.

Visiting Machu Picchu from Cusco is a bucket list experience

Cusco to Machu Picchu Independently

To get to Machu Picchu independently, you will first need to get to Aquas Calientes. In the sections below, we’ll break down your options for traveling independently from Cusco to Aguas Calientes and Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu.

  • Option 1: Direct train from Cusco to Aguas Calientes
  • Option 2: Bimodal service
  • Option 3: Taxi to Ollantaytambo, train to Aguas Calientes
  • Option 1: By bus
  • Option 2: By foot

Cusco to Machu Picchu Map

The map below displays each of the key locations involved in the journey from Cusco to Machu Picchu, as well as the different train stations and bus stops that we’ll mention throughout the article.

  • To view more details about each location, click on the marker on the map.
  • To save this map for future use, click the star next to the title. From your phone, open the Google Maps app and click the “saved” tab, followed by the “Maps” icon. From your Gmail account, navigate to Maps –> “Saved” –> “My Maps” –> “Maps” tab.
  • To email this map to yourself, click the three dots in the upper right corner.

Step 1 | Cusco to Aquas Calientes

Option 1 | direct train from cusco to aguas calientes.

  • Ticket cost | $125 to $1,000 USD round trip per person
  • Total time | about 4 hours
  • Book your tickets | PeruRail or IncaRail

The easiest and most popular way to get from Cusco to Machu Picchu is by taking a train directly from Cusco to Aguas Calientes (which stops in Ollantaytambo along the way). This direct train route is offered by both PeruRail and IncaRail and takes about 4 hours one way.

Both companies offer several different levels of service from basic economy to luxurious private cabins with meals and live music, meaning round-trip tickets can vary in price from about $125 USD per person to over $1,000 USD per person!

Reserve your tickets | We’d highly recommend purchasing tickets online well in advance of your trip. The Inca Rail and Peru Rail websites can be confusing to navigate, so you may find it easier to book through 12go.

Aguas Calientes, the last town on the journey from Cusco to Machu Picchu

Option 2 | Bimodal service (private bus to Ollantaytambo and train to Aguas Calientes)

  • Ticket cost | $110 to $350 round trip per person
  • Total time | 6 – 8 hours (depends on the time between your bus arrival and train departure)

The next option to get to Machu Picchu from Cusco is the bimodal service, offered by both PeruRail and IncaRain. The bimodal service combines a private bus transfer from Cusco to Ollantaytambo with a train ticket from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes.

There are two main advantages of the bimodal service over the direct train route. First, it offers the chance to spend a couple hours exploring Ollantaytambo , depending on the length of your layover. And second, tickets are generally slightly cheaper.

However, most layovers don’t allow a ton of time, and buses can often be delayed. You’d be better off going with option 3 if you really want to explore Ollantaytambo.

Our take | In our experience, the direct train (option 1) tends to sell out first, so the bimodal service seems like a backup plan. We’d recommend trying to get the direct train or traveling to Ollantaytambo on your own (see option 3).

Ancient ruins in Ollantaytambo, one stop on the route from Cusco to Machu Picchu

Option 3 | Taxi or public bus to Ollantaytambo, train to Aguas Calientes

  • Ticket cost | $30 – $50 USD per taxi and $110 – $350 USD per train ticket
  • Total time | 4 – 8 hours (depending on the length of stops)

The third option for getting from Cusco to Aquas Calientes is to find your own means of transportation via taxi or public bus from Cusco to Ollantaytambo , and then take the train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes.

There are two main advantages of this option. First, you can spend as much time as you want exploring Ollantaytambo , a cute town with a picturesque square and beautiful Incan ruins.

Second, if you take a private taxi from Cusco to Ollantaytambo, you can stop by the ancient ruins at Moray and the Incan salt mines at Maras along the way. This is what we did, and we’d highly recommend it! We paid 200 soles for the entire trip and had no trouble finding a taxi willing to take us.

Unfortunately, the train ticket from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes is not much less expensive than the direct ticket from Cusco to Aguas Calientes, so this option will likely end up costing a bit more.

Maras & Moray: Incredible Incan Ruins & Salt Mines in Peru

Maras & Moray: Incredible Incan Ruins & Salt Mines in Peru

Nestled in the hills of the Sacred Valley, the ruins and salt mines of Maras and Moray make for an incredible day trip from Cusco, Peru.

Step 2 | Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu

Once you arrive in Aguas Calientes, your journey is not quite over! To get from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu, you can either take a bus or hike about 2 miles up to the mystery city in the clouds.

Option 1 | Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu by bus

  • Ticket cost | $12 one way $24 round-trip
  • Total time | 30 minutes

The most common way to get from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu is to take a short bus ride offered only by the bus company, Consettur.

Here are a few important things to know about the bus from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu:

  • The first bus departs at 5:30am and buses leave every 5 to 10 minutes.
  • The bus ride takes about 30 minutes one way.
  • The bus departs from Avenida Hermanos Ayar across from the train station. You’ll see buses (and people) start to line up along the street well before 5:30 AM, so it’s hard to miss!
  • There is no limit on bus tickets so you don’t have to worry about them selling out.
  • It’s possible to purchase tickets in person in Aguas Calientes (cash only), but we’d recommend purchasing online in advance.
  • If you do purchase tickets online, make sure to print them out before you leave. The bus conductor will scan your ticket, and we had trouble with the tickets on our mobile phones not scanning correctly.

Reserve your tickets | You can purchase Aquas Calientes to Machu Picchu bus tickets online here.

Option 2 | Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu by foot

  • Ticket cost | free
  • Total time | 2 hours (one way)

If you prefer not to take the bus, you can also hike to Machu Picchu from Aquas Calientes. However, it’s a very steep 2-mile hike (one-way) with about 1,700 feet of elevation gain!

Expect the hike to take about 2 hours. It’s possible to hike one way and take the bus either up or down.

Hiking in Machu Picchu

How to get tickets for Machu Picchu

  • Cost | 152 soles (approximately $40 USD)
  • Purchase tickets online here

With all the logistics to simply get to Machu Picchu, don’t forget that you also need to purchase tickets to enter Machu Picchu .

When purchasing tickets, you will need to select a “circuit” through Machu Picchu and whether you want to hike up Huayna Picchu , the tall mountain behind the ruins.

The upper circuit offers the classic view you envision when you think of Machu Picchu, while the lower circuit takes a more direct route to the Huayna Picchu trailhead. In addition to choosing a circuit, you’ll also need to select an entrance time.

Pro Tip | During the peak season, tickets for the best entrance times sell out. Make sure to book your tickets well in advance.

For many, visiting Machu Picchu, the hidden fortress shrouded in mystery, is a bucket list experience. But if you’re planning on visiting Machu Picchu, you need to add on…

Can I visit Machu Picchu from Cusco in one day?

Technically, yes, but we would not recommend it.

To take a day trip to Machu Picchu would involve 8 hours of total travel time . Although exploring Machu Picchu itself only takes a few hours, the fastest possible transportation time from Cusco to Machu Picchu is about 4 hours by direct train (to Aguas Calientes).

As such, we’d recommend splitting the trip up over two days, staying one night in either Ollantaytambo or Aguas Calientes.

Other ways to get from Cusco to Machu Picchu

Besides navigating the logistics yourself, there are a few other ways to get from Cusco to Machu Picchu. You can visit as part of a guided day trip or you can embark on a multi-day guided trek through the mountainside to Machu Picchu.

1. Cusco to Machu Picchu with a guided tour

  • Ticket cost | $310 per person
  • Total time | full day
  • Book your tickets here!

If reading about all the logistics needed to get from Cusco to Machu Picchu has you feeling overwhelmed, don’t fret! It’s also possible to book a tour that will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco and get you to Machu Picchu completely hassle-free.

In addition to the logistical ease and convenience that a tour group provides, the package also typically includes a guided tour of the Machu Picchu ruins, providing interesting context to the wonders you’ll see wandering through the lost city.

However, the convenience will come at a higher cost, and squeezing the entire trip into one day may feel a bit rushed.

2. Multi-day trek to Machu Picchu

If you’re looking for the ultimate Machu Picchu experience, you can visit Machu Picchu via one of several multi-day treks through the stunning mountains around the Incan ruins. The famous Inca Trail is the most popular route and can only be trekked with a guide.

There are several different multi-day treks that culminate at Machu Picchu, including:

  • Inca Trail | The most popular route which departs from Ollantaytambo and traverses 38km to Machu Picchu, typically done over 4 or 5 days.
  • Salkantay Trek | The most popular alternative to the Inca Trail, this route features stunning alpine scenery from alpine lakes like Laguna Humantay to snowy peaks, typically done over 5 days
  • Choquequirao Trek | The longest and most challenging route to Machu Picchu, typically done over 7 to 9 days.
  • Lares Trek | A less strenuous route that passes through several small villages and is typically completed in 3 days.

When is the best time to travel to Machu Picchu ?

The best time to go to Machu Picchu depends basically on two factors such as weather and crowds:

So, the best time to visit Machu Picchu is the shoulder months, April, May, September, October, and November. The chances of rain are few during these months, and the temperature is pleasant as it is away from the cold winter nights of the peak season. During these months, there will be fewer crowds too.

The rainy season in Cusco and Machu Picchu is from November to March. While the crowds are smaller during this time, making it a more peaceful and enjoyable experience. The weather can be unpredictable, and there is a higher chance of rain and cloudy skies. However, the rainy season can also offer beautiful views of the misty mountains and lush vegetation.

The peak tourist season in Machu Picchu is from mid-June to Mid-Septemer, which coincides with the summer break in the northern hemisphere. During this time, the weather is generally clear and dry, making it a popular time to visit. However, the crowds can be quite large, and it can be difficult to get tickets and accommodations so we recommend booking way in advance for these months.

So what to expect on a regular day at Machu Picchu? – Breathtaking views, mild to hot temperatures although kind of windy at some places in the afternoons; mostly sunny days during the months of May, June, July, and August, although some mornings would be a little foggy (some days very foggy especially in the rainy season)

Are there bathrooms at Machu Picchu ?

Yes! There are restrooms located outside the entrance to Machu Picchu and the entry costs 2 soles (toilet paper included). There are no restroom facilities inside the archaeological site. Make sure you use the bathroom before you enter the site. It is right in front of the entrance.

What is NOT allowed at Machupicchu ?

  • Food is not allowed (The ticket says that eating inside the site is not allowed, but you can bring a small snack with you, only try not to eat too openly, and it comes without saying that you should not litter) There is a restaurant at the gate of Machu Picchu and many more down in Aguas Calientes town
  • Fly drones over Machupicchu or any other Inka ruins
  • Walking Sticks unless the visitor really needs them (Then, sticker should have rubber tips)
  • Climb the Inka walls and/or structures.
  • Enter with professional tripods, selfie sticks, or other professional photography/film stabilization accessories. (This restriction is for Machupicchu Only, do not apply to other sites)

How much luggage should I take on the trains ?

The train company allows any luggage not exceeding 5 kg / 11 lb or a small carry-on. Big baggage can block the exits so it is recommended to leave at your Cusco hotel o sacred Valley Hotel and pick them up after Machu Picchu.

  • Please note that for the Inca Trail, permits are not-changeable, not-transferable, and not-refundable. Dates can never be changed by government policy.

With the exception of the Inca Trail treks, we are generally able to change a trek date.

  • To change the date of your non-Inca Trail trek, there is a fee of US $75 per person if the change occurs more than 30 days prior to trek departure.
  • If the change occurs 21 to 30 days prior to trek departure, the fee is US $100 per person.
  • If the change occurs 10 to 20 days before trek departure, the fee is US $150 per person.
  • Changes less than 10 days prior to trek departure will have varying fees, which can be discussed at the time the change is being made.
  • Changes made must be to another group trek for a minimum of 2 individuals. If a single traveler needs to change dates, and there is not an existing option for that date, the change will not be possible.

TRAVEL INSURANCE

  • We highly recommend travel insurance for all of our customers.
  • Coverage should include baggage loss, accident, emergency air rescue and trip cancellation. Trip cancellation insurance should reimburse you for non-recoverable air or land expenses should you cancel your trip due to personal or family illness, as well as covering any medical or emergency evacuation expenses if you become ill during your trip.
  • In the case of illness or injury on one of our treks or tours, we are trained to provide emergency first aid and arrange transportation to a proper medical facility. However, we are not responsible for the cost of those transportation services or the cost of medical care.

ABOUT YOUR PASSPORT IN MACHU PICCHU, HUAYNA PICCHU AND ON THE INCA TRAIL:

  • Once you book your tour, we send your information immediately to “Machu Picchu Park” in order for permits to be issued as soon as possible.
  • You will need to bring your actual passport for all services. A photocopy will not be accepted.
  • If your passport number changes between reserving your spot and the start of your trek, you will need to bring your old as well as your new passport to the start of the Trek.
  • If any of the information on your passport does not match the information we were previously provided, you won’t be able to start the trek.
  • If you arrive in Cusco and did not advise us that you have a new passport number, and that your information has changed, Peru Spirit Adventure will not be held responsible. In this situation it will be the responsibility of the customer to pay the extra expense of returning to Cusco or Machu Picchu (transportation, food and other expenses).

TRAVEL IN PERU:   Peru Spirit Adventure  operates in regions, where standards of accommodation can vary. Transportation and other services might not be like those you would normally have back home. However, we strive with all due care and skill, to provide the best service for our clients. Traveling in Peru requires flexibility, patience, broad-mindedness, good humor and an understanding that changes may be made without notice due to circumstances or occurrences beyond our control. For example: a strike, protest, landslide, bad weather, etc. ( Force Majeure ). By booking any of our tours & treks, you agree to allow  Peru Spirit Adventure  to make necessary changes without liability.

FORCE MAJEURE

Force Majeure is any event that PERU SPIRIT ADVENTURE cannot with all due care foresee, control or avoid. This covers events such as war or threat of war, riot, civil strike, terrorist activity, industrial dispute, disease, natural disasters, adverse weather conditions, fire or all similar events beyond our control. In this case, PERU SPIRIT ADVENTURE will not accept liability and reserves the right to change, postpone or even cancel trips. (This is a last option, of course!)

By booking any of our adventure trips (Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, Lares, Salkantay, Ausangate, Choquequirao, Rainbow Mountain trek and more) you assume the risks associated with personal accidents, medical emergencies, air travel problems etc. For these treks, PERU SPIRIT ADVENTURE Agency accepts no responsibility.

FULL TERMS & CONDITIONS FOR ADVENTURE TOURS & TREKS

  • You must advise Peru Spirit Adventure of any medical problems or allergies you may have. You need to be in good physical health, and if your health is questionable, then you should consult a doctor. If you are over the age of 70 years old, then you will need to present us with a current good health medical certificate.
  • You must advise your guide if you wish to leave the group or the camping area for independent walks or sightseeing. If you are experiencing any problems with the services of the guide or tour, please advise the guide in that moment, so that he can resolve any problems.
  • All balances need to be paid in either cash or PayPal (see “ FINAL PAYMENTS ” section above).
  • In order to receive a student discount, you must send your valid University ID to Peru Spirit Adventure at the time of booking. ID must have your name, photo and valid expiration date. Any card without an expiration date will not be accepted. You will then be required to bring your student card with you on the trek – they will not allow you to pass through the checkpoint without this original card.
  • You will be required to show the original passport (not a copy) that you booked with, at the checkpoint to enter the Inca Trail. If you originally booked with an old passport and then renewed your passport, you must also bring your expired passport along with your new, valid passport to permit entry or they will refuse your entrance to the trail.
  • Cancellations: Your deposit is 100% non-refundable. If you need to cancel for any reason, as you approach your tour start date, there may be additional cost due. There are absolutely no exceptions (we do not accept medical notes of any kind) as our out of pocket expenses are non-refundable to us (see  “CANCELLATION FEES”  section above).
  • PERMITS: Permits for the Inca Trail are in your name and can not be transferred to anyone else under any circumstances. Change of dates is also not possible once a permit has been purchased. Permits are non-refundable and non-transferable. The deposit will be forfeited. Please note that this is a regulation of the Peruvian government and not PERU SPIRIT ADVENTURE (or any agency).
  • All Adventure Treks include transportation to Cusco. The return train route depends on train availability.
  • If you become ill or injured on the trail and are unable to continue, a porter will be provided to accompany you back to an area with emergency assistance capabilities. Helicopter airlifts and medical assistance are at the expense of the trekker. If you are unable to complete the tour due to illness, we will assist you in meeting your group at Machu Picchu to recommence your tour at that point. There will be no refund of the original payment.
  • PERU SPIRIT ADVENTURE will take all reasonable care in providing to our clients avoidance of accident, illness, and loss of personal property, and will only employ suitably qualified staff. We accept responsibility for the actions of our own employees. Peru Spirit Adventure cannot, however, be responsible for any action of third parties. You are totally responsible for your own personal property and rented equipment.
  • PERU SPIRIT ADVENTURE does not take responsibility for unfavorable weather conditions, natural catastrophe, strikes, accidents, illness, injury, loss of personal ítems, etc. It is the client’s responsibility to carry insurance to cover these types of events. We reserve the right to modify or cancel the program due to any of the unforeseen conditions listed above.

VERY IMPORTANT:

  • We strongly suggest spending time at high altitude (above 3000 meters / 9842 feet)- in Cusco or another high altitude area for a minimum of 2- 4 days before undertaking your trip. This is in order to minimize the possible effects of altitude sickness. By drinking plenty of fluids, adding sugar to your drinks, eating food high in carbohydrates, avoiding cigarettes, alcohol, and drinking coca tea (ancient traditional leaf) will help your body acclimatize.
  • We recommend you arrive in Cusco 48 hours or more before trek departure because occasionally we need to leave earlier than scheduled in case of strikes or other events out of our control (see ‘Force Majeure’ section below)

Machu Picchu Day Trip from Cusco Details

Machu Picchu Tours One Day is one of our exclusive tours. We have designed the Machu Picchu tours one-day program for travelers wanting to visit Machu Picchu in a short time.

With no sacrifice in quality or time, you will be given an immersive tour of the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu by our English-speaking local tour guide.

This full-day trip to Machu Picchu begins with an early morning transfer from your hotel in Cusco to the Ollantaytambo train station. This will be followed by a two hours train ride to Aguas Calientes Pueblo.

We will then transfer you to the Machu Picchu citadel where our local expert will be giving you a two hours detailed tour of the citadel.

If you intend to hike Huayna Picchu Mountain or Machu Picchu mountain, then it is highly recommended that you let us know at the time of booking the tour to Machu Picchu. You will need permits to hike to any of these peaks. Permits are often sold months in advance.

Machu Picchu Day Trip from Cusco is one of our signature tours. We aim to offer you the best and the most of the trip. We operate the tour both as a private tour and as a small group tour.

The price includes train tickets in an Expedition or Voyager class tourist train. If you desire to upgrade to the Vistadome train to get a panoramic view, do let us know while booking the tour.

Best time to visit Machu Picchu:

The best time to visit Machu Picchu on a full-day tour is during the dry season, between May and November. During the rainy season, it often gets cloudy which makes the visibility quite low.

Also check our detailed guide about the weather in Cusco , which is a vital factor to be considered before taking any tour in the region.

Consider spending 2-3 days in Cusco before your Machu Picchu Tours One Day to avoid altitude sickness.

Do take a moment to check our reviews on Tripadvisor .

Thank you Marko Andinauta for taking us on this amazing journey to Machu Picchu and for sharing your expert knowledge and passion about Inca/Peruvian history and culture.

The journey from Cusco to Machu Picchu was fascinating. We passed through remote villages by bus then took an enchanting train ride through the mountainous of “Valle Sagrado” to Aguas Calientes. In Aguas Calientes we visited a nice restaurant overlooking the Vilcanota River to enjoy some Pisco sour’s – Peru’s national drink. Finally, we boarded a large van on the way to our final destination.

Once in Machu Picchu the experience really starts to hit you. WOW. This place is an archeological marvel and one of the 7 wonders of the world. As we toured the site, we took lots of great pics and our tour guide stopped along the route to share information and perspective on key details.

Marko is a multilingual tour guide who speaks Quechua, Spanish, English and some Italian. We had both English and Spanish speakers on the tour and Marko switched between languages without missing a beat.

I highly recommend Marko Andinauta and Happy Gringo Tours!

The Machu Picchu tour was wonderful, everything was very good organised!

The pick up was on time, nice train journey Ollantaytambu to Machu Picchu town, the guide was waiting us to take us to Machu Picchu, the walking tour in Machu Picchu very very interesting. Thanks Marco!

I will send all my lazy friends…‼

We traveled in February 2020, and took the Machu Picchu single day tour with Marco and Happy Gringo Tours. The entire experience was excellent, and very well managed. We had was excellent communication in the lead up (including a message at 3:50am to let us know they were close to picking us up). The first part of the tour was with Peru Rail, which was very well organised. We meet Marko at the Aguas Calientes station, and he took us up to the Machu Picchu. Marko was an excellent guide, and provided so much information and detail about the history of the site. We probably could have organised the logistics of getting to and from ourselves, but the immense value added with having Marko explain the important details made the experience unforgettable. We also ended up being the only two people on the tour, which made it more special. This tour is excellent, and I can’t recommend it more highly

My mom (62 years old) and I booked this trip to see Machu Picchu and were not let down! We were a bit concerned about all the different methods and modes of transport but Gringo Tours did an excellent job coordinating the tour and making sure everyone knew where they were going. Our own private guide at Machu Picchu awaited us there and gave fantastic tidbits and information about the ruins and the surrounding areas. Could not recommend this company more!

The 6 ways to get to Machu Picchu from Cusco – 2020-21 update

how to get to machu picchu peru aguas calientes hidroelectrica inca trail salkantay

Sometimes, I use affiliate/sponsored links with my recommendations, which if bought through might earn me a few pennies at absolutely no extra cost to you . This helps with the cost of keeping this site alive so I can continue to guide you on your travels. Please remember that I would never ever ever recommend anything I don’t or wouldn’t use myself. Big thanks to each and every one of you who have trusted my recommendations so far! Lozzy x

Planning how to get to Machu Picchu from Cusco was one of the most confusing things we’ve had to do in our whole trip. There are so many conflicting sources and routes that no one talks about. We’re therefore going to try and break down the 6 different ways to get to Machu Picchu from Cusco that we learnt of in our research (and also from Lima to Machu Picchu for a bonus point!). There have been some recent changes made during 2019 resulting in new 2021 Machu Picchu entry regulations, which we will also outline for you.

There are no simple buses or car routes to Machu Picchu, and in most instances you have to go via to Aguas Calientes (the town at the base of the Machu Picchu mountain where all the civilisation is), so you have to think a bit harder about how to get there. Unless you get the train to Aguas Calientes and back to Cusco in one day (which would mean your entry to the park is fairly late and you’ll be in peak crowds until after 3pm) you will need at the very least 1 night in the town of Aguas Calientes.

Note that you will need to bring a form of official identification in order to enter the Machu Picchu site. Definitely opt for a passport over drivers license or ID card, as when you leave the ruins you can get an optional passport stamp!

Want to skip to something in particular?

What are the new Machu Picchu regulations in 2021?

Well, in order to curb footfall and damage to this world heritage site, Peru has (rightfully!) enforced some new restrictions on Machu Picchu for 2020 and beyond. We’ll outline the new rules here:

Machu Picchu entry shifts

Instead of being able to turn up whenever (read: everyone turn up at 6am to push their way into the site as soon as the gates open), you now have to sign up for a shift to enter Machu Picchu in 2021. This is actually great as it means that the crowd level is the same throughout the day, whether you woke up to hike to Machu Picchu from Aguas Calientes at dawn or not.

There are 3 Machu Picchu entry shifts: the first shift is at 6am-9am, second shift is at 9am-12pm and then the third is at 12pm-3pm. However, to alleviate the crowds even more, within these shifts are different entry times on the hour, which will be specified on your ticket.

2021 Machu Picchu ticket prices

This does of course mean purchasing Machu Picchu entry tickets in advance, but most of the tour options we’ve mentioned below will include this in their packages – always check before reserving your spot!! The earlier shift time has always been the most popular, and so this price is the most expensive for a 2021 Machu Picchu entry ticket, at 197 soles ($60 USD), and 131 soles ($40 USD) in the afternoon.

hidroelectrica to aguas calientes machu picchu trek trail hike walk along rail train tracks in peru cheapest way to get to machu picchu fog mist Machu Picchu from Cusco

4 hour time limits

Though they’re probably not going to hunt you down and chase you out of the park, there is now a 4-hour time limit at Machu Picchu. This is related to the hour you entered, not the hour that your shift group started, so don’t worry about being short-changed on time.

Tour guides are mandatory

And we think this is great! Not only does it help put money back into the local community as many of the guides are natives, but getting a tour guide to take you around also solidifies this as a breath-taking experience, as without someone to tell you the significance of what you’re seeing it could easily look like an unimpressive set of stone walls. Most organised transport options will include a guided tour at the top, but if you bought train tickets independently, for example, you will need to organise a guide separately . Machu Picchu tours are officially limited to a maximum of 16 people, but if you want a private experience with a Peruvian guide we recommend checking out who you can match with for personalised tours on ViaHero in Peru .

How to get to Machu Picchu from Cusco: 6 ways

Below are the options for getting to the most famous place in Peru; with the exception of the classic Inca trail and trains we generally found that booking in person from little tour operators based in Cusco is a lot cheaper than reserving places online, but we’ve included some links for where to book online just in case you enjoy travelling to a place safe in the knowledge that your place on a tour is secured.

If you’re going to opt for one of the hikes to Machu Picchu from Cusco, but are unsure of what to bring with you, check out this helpful Machu Picchu packing guide .

1. The ‘Classic’ Inca Trail

‘The real deal’. The most famous Inca trail closes for the whole month of February because of the danger posed by rainy season, so even if we did want to take this option (we most definitely didn’t), we couldn’t have. The classic Inca trail only has limited passes (500 per day as of 2019) so you need to book this one pretty far in advance – some say as far as 6 months if you’re travelling during high season, which is from May to September.

This is typically a 4 or 5 day hike through the old Inca passes that ends with reaching Machu Picchu at sunrise, before the crowds get there.

Although the trail is hard and the tour is costly (starting from around $550, but this can escalate pretty drastically if you book online from a tour company instead of booking with an operator in Peru – though saying that, G Adventures offer a fantastic 7-day Peru trip that includes the Inca Trail for a really great price ), this is no doubt the best way to experience the world wonder and its surrounding beauty.

We’ve never met anyone who didn’t absolutely love the experience – perhaps because no one in their right mind would ever embark on this trail if they didn’t already have an appreciation for hiking 😉

2. The Lares Trek

This is a trail that takes 3 or 4 days when including a visit to Machu Picchu, though some people make it into a 2 or 3 day hiking route without popping in for a gander at the world heritage site. You don’t need a permit for this one like you do for the classic Inca trail, so no need to reserve a space too far in advance.

The Lares Trek to Machu Picchu is seen as the more cultured experience, as it takes you through more traditional villages where you’ll have the chance to see how the local people have lived for hundreds of years. There are usually fewer people taking the Lares Trek than the other trails on offer, so it’s a great option to get some headspace before facing the crowds of Aguas Calientes and Machu Picchu itself.

3. The Salkantay Trek

This is a cheaper, 4 day hike (5 if you include the day you get to Machu Picchu) that, depending on your negotiation skills, can cost as little as $240 if you book in-person in Cusco, but you’ll only get a price like this if they’re feeling desperate about how many spaces they still have to fill before the trek starts. The Salkantay Trek is still an option during rainy season when the classic Inca Trail is closed, and you don’t have to book more than a few days in advance during low season.

Day 2 of the Salkantay Trek has unanimously been voted by our fellow travellers as the hardest of all, perhaps due to the fact that the altitude peaks at 4500m on this day. The other days are apparently quite pleasant. Halfway through the 4 th day, you will join the trail that cheapskates use from the Hidroelectrica for the rest of the way (more on this below).

machu picchu hike aguas calientes hidroelectrica hydroelectirc plant walk trek trail how to get to machu picchu peru cheapest quickest way

4. The Adventure Tour to Machu Picchu from Cusco

There are both 4 day and 5 day options for this way of getting to Machu Picchu. The last 2 days of this trip will be identical to the below cheapskate route, but before that you’ll do a bit of trekking in between activities such as white water rafting, mountain biking and zip-lining. Less gruelling than the Salkantay Trek whilst still feeling like you’ve made the effort to get out of urbanised areas. Prices if booked in person during low season are usually in the region of $250.

5. The Train to Machu Picchu from Cusco

We originally thought getting the 4-hour train directly from Cusco to Aguas Calientes would solve all our lives’ problems. And then we saw the price. Though there are several different options, one of the best is the Inca Rail First Class experience , serving gourmet food amidst live performances.

Expect an Orient Express-style luxury journey for the affluent traveller who wants to see the world without breaking a sweat (I mean really, isn’t that what we all want in life?!). This particular tour includes all transfers within Cusco and Aguas Calientes, as well as entry and a guide for the Machu Picchu site once you arrive.

If that’s out of your budget, there’s always the less lavish but still excellent Vistadome train , which has glass all the way around to maximise your views as you travel in from Cusco. Andy’s dad took this option in 2019 and absolutely loved the experience.

For us plebs who are just looking for the least expensive, easiest way to get to Machu Picchu, the very cheapest return ticket on a budget PeruRail train will cost you $120 if you book far enough in advance to nab the cheap seats. Prices go up to $475 per person EACH WAY. Get savin’.

6. The Cheapskate Route: Bus to Hidroelectrica, walk to Aguas Calientes, hike to Machu Picchu

Our chosen option! It cost us $95 USD per person (though we would expect this price to rise with the 2021 Machu Picchu ticket price increase) which included the bus to and from Hidroelectrica, a dinner in a restaurant, a packed lunch, a private hostel room, entrance to Machu Picchu and a 2 hour guided tour. We booked this the night before we left Cusco.

Note : you should not be doing this route with any more than a light day bag, and definitely nothing with wheels! Most hostels will allow you to leave your big backpacks in their storage space whilst visiting Machu Picchu from Cusco.

machu picchu hike aguas calientes hidroelectrica hydroelectirc plant walk trek trail how to get to machu picchu peru cheapest quickest way

A minibus picked us up at around 5am and drove us 8 hours through the Sacred Valley (with a brief stop in Ollantaytambo to stretch our legs), dropping us off at the Hidroelectrica plant – a well-trodden transport hub in the middle of nowhere. There is a decent restaurant here if you want to stop for lunch, but if you go 5 minutes up the road towards the train station (turn left after the bridge and head past the tourism hut), there are plenty of restaurants to choose around there, too.

From here, you have two options. You can either get the $31 (each way) train into Aguas Calientes – which unfortunately has really sporadic departure times, or you can walk along the train track for free.

Being tight-arses, we obviously opted for the free option, and set off down the tracks.

hidroelectrica to aguas calientes machu picchu trek trail hike walk along rail train tracks in peru cheapest way to get to machu picchu from cusco

Our bus driver had told us not to stray from the tracks at all, but this was actually terrible advice, because after the first 200m of track, there is a sign pointing up the hill towards the jungle that says ‘Aguas Calientes/Machu Picchu this way’, and then another at the top of that. Make sure you follow these two signs, even if at times you feel like you’re going through someone’s house and at others like you might be getting lost in the jungle.

When you emerge from the jungle onto a new set of tracks, you need to turn left. The river should remain on your left until you get to the rusty old bridge. And from now, keep your pace and enjoy the beautiful views around you.

tours to machu picchu from cusco

While almost entirely flat, this trek is still pretty exhausting, mainly because you have to watch every footstep due to the ground being covered in big, uneven rocks. It’s easiest to walk directly along the train tracks, but be careful of trains (they’re extremely slow-moving but the worry is that you may not hear them coming over the rush of the river).

There are several little places to buy snacks and drinks along the way, but they will charge you a premium for their monopoly out in the wilderness. It took us around 2 hours 45 minutes to walk from Hidroelectrica to Aguas Calientes, and boy were we glad to see the end of that walk! We recommend taking lots of water and portable speakers to keep spirits high if you’re the non-hiking type.

hidroelectrica to aguas calientes machu picchu trek trail hike walk along rail train tracks in peru cheapest way to get to machu picchu

After visiting Machu Picchu the next day, you will need to walk back down this track to pick up the minibus back to Cusco at 2pm. Make sure you know exactly which company’s bus you’re supposed to be getting in, as this may be different to the company you arrived with. Most will give you a paper wristband to make things easier.

What’s Aguas Calientes like?

Everyone sees the town of Aguas Calientes at some point, whatever route you took to get from Machu Picchu from Cusco. We expected the town to be a tiny, shoddy collection of shite hostels, but in reality the tourist dollar has allowed them to build a shiny Disney-town. It’s clean, buzzing and feels safe but is a bit on the expensive side. If you arrive early enough, you can visit the hot springs (the town’s namesake) nearby to relax your muscles after your walk.

Unless you take the train or hike the classic Inca trail, you will need to spend the night at Aguas Calientes before going up Machu Picchu. Most cheapskate, Lares Trek and Salkantay Trek tour operators will include this (but always check what’s included!).

They will usually also provide a restaurant dinner so you can meet the other people who are taking your tour the next day, as well as being a chance for your tour guide to tell you where to meet him at the top of Machu Picchu mountain in the morning.

The people on the cheapskate tour are normally entirely different to the people in your cheapskate minibus, as the tours are often run by cooperatives and middlemen who sell your custom on. For this reason, reading reviews of tours before booking the cheapskate option is sort of pointless.

The hostel we were given was lovely, and the packed lunch of a banana, juice, sandwiches and a cereal bar was perfect fuel for getting ourselves up Machu Picchu mountain in the morning (there’s not much in terms of food options once you leave Aguas Calientes).

Bonus tip: How to get from Lima to Machu Picchu

Unfortunately, unless you take a multi-day coach tour, there’s no special way to get from Lima to Machu Picchu. As you might expect, you’ll need to travel from Lima to Machu Picchu via Cusco, and then follow one of the 6 ways to get to Machu Picchu above. There are regular night buses from Lima to Cusco. Cruz del Sur or Civa are some of the comfiest bus companies that offer this route – comfort is important for this 21 hour journey! Check out BusBud to book your tickets.

You may also want to consider Peru Hop, which is a fantastic way to get the flexibility of an independent trip whilst letting the tour company sort out all the details for you. That’ll let you stop off at other interesting places such as the Nazca lines and Huacachina on your way from Lima to Machu Picchu!

How to get to Machu Picchu from Aguas Calientes

(applies to all except the classic Inca Trail)

Most ways to get to Machu Picchu will involve heading to the top of the mountain to where the world heritage site sits, but the classic Inca trail takes a different route to get there earlier than those in Aguas Calientes can. Here, you have two options, each with their pros and cons. To give you an idea of timings, we’ve included how to get there for the earliest Machu Picchu entry time at 6am, though make sure you’ve checked your shift times on the ticket.

It must be said that the walk up the mountain to Machu Picchu is really tough, and if you’re not fit you will need a lot of breaks. It’s also mostly in the pitch black, so having a source of light will really help you get up those endless uneven, muddy stairs built into the jungle. However, the views are breath-taking as you edge closer to the top and the sun begins to paint the misty mountains blue. Bus-takers don’t get that 😉

Machu Picchu from Cusco hidroelectrica to aguas calientes machu picchu trek trail hike walk along rail train tracks in peru cheapest way to get to machu picchu

So you made it up to Machu Picchu! Now what?

The site of Machu Picchu is sooooo much bigger than you expect. It stretches all around the mountain, not just in the patch that the classic shots show you.

It’s normal for the site to be covered in early morning mist, so don’t panic if you can’t see anything when you first get up there; just focus on the foreground as the guide takes you round the more intricate details. As long as it’s not a rainy day, the mist should clear by the time you make your way to the Sun Temple, which is one of the higher points from which to get your classic Machu Picchu pictures.

hidroelectrica to aguas calientes machu picchu trek trail hike walk along rail train tracks in peru cheapest way to get to machu picchu

Other hikes around Machu Picchu

Once on-site, you can also opt to climb the other mountain (Huayna Picchu) in order to get a less conventional view of Machu Picchu.

However, this has to be booked at least a week before (get your entrance tickets to both Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu in one here !) as there are only 400 passes for Huayna Picchu per day across 2 time slots. It does involve an extra hour and a half to 2 hour hike that should only be undertaken if you are fit and healthy. You’ll need a specific Huayna Picchu guide for this hike!

There is another optional hike up Machu Picchu mountain (yep, it goes even further up!) that is seen to be a challenging but rewarding one. After a 90 minute ascent, you’ll have breath-taking views of the whole Machu Picchu site. Though the path is well-sign-posted from the site entrance, you’ll still need an official guide for this hike. You can purchase entrance tickets to Machu Picchu ruins and mountain together here .

Overall, despite all the hassle, sweat, tears and soles it took to get there, Machu Picchu has been one of the most awe-inspiring places we’ve been to, and it is absolutely not to be missed.

We hope this travel guide helps you plan how to get to Machu Picchu from Cusco in a way that suits your budget and travel style!

If you loved walking amongst the epic landscapes around Machu Picchu, make sure you arrange yourself a trip to Rainbow Mountain when you get back to Cusco. Views for days!

From Cusco to Machu Picchu: Everything You Need to Know

Machu Picchu is the most iconic tourist attraction to be found anywhere in Peru, and perhaps anywhere in South America. This world-famous Inca ruin is found high in the mountains, and its history is as mystical as the very clouds that swirl around the towering, snow-capped peaks.

After the fall of the Inca Empire to the Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century, Machu Picchu was lost to records and to time.

It stood abandoned, hidden away in the mountains for centuries until it was again rediscovered in the early 20th century. From that moment of rediscovery, this ‘Lost City of the Incas’ has become an epic tourist attraction in the heart of the Peruvian mountains.

It’s a sight to marvel at, a sight like no other, where the ruins of this Inca city are perched on dramatic cliffs, in overwhelmingly beautiful surroundings.

The gateway to Machu Picchu is the old Inca capital of Cusco, and from here you can hike through the mountains or take the scenic train as close to the base of Machu Picchu as possible.

Either way, figuring out the best route can be difficult, especially as many of the multi-day treks have limited places available. It’s best to plan your trip to Machu Picchu well in advance, as it is a once in a lifetime experience, but an experience that is incredibly popular amongst travelers.

To help you out, here’s our guide to traveling from Cusco to Machu Picchu.

A Brief History of Machu Picchu

Table of Contents

Machu Picchu is an ever-enduring legacy of the Inca Empire that fell to the Spanish invaders in the 16th century. This once powerful and advanced civilization was wiped out by the European conquerors in an incredibly short space of time, and much of the history, culture, and traditions of these people were lost.

It’s thought that Machu Picchu served as a summer retreat for the Inca rulers, who had their capital nearby at Cusco, and that few people actually lived here all year round.

It was a guarded, secretive place built for the elite, and so when the empire fell, it’s no surprise that details of its location were lost too. This, however, is all speculation, as no one is quite sure what the site’s purpose was.

Since its rediscovery at the turn of the 20th century by explorers hoping to find gold and riches and the lost vestiges of an empire, Machu Picchu’s legend has only grown and grown. Now it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an important Inca relic that’s much loved by locals and tourists alike.

From Cusco to Machu Picchu - Everything You Need to Know

Where is Machu Picchu?

Machu Picchu is found in the Southern Sierra mountain range, in the far south of Peru. The closest city to the ruins is Cusco, the ancient Inca capital. This is the starting point for all travelers visiting Machu Picchu, no matter the method you choose to take, as Cusco is well connected to the rest of the country.

There are regular, daily flights to the Peruvian capital Lima, and from Lima’s international airport, there are frequent worldwide connections to North America and even as far afield as Europe.

Flight time from Lima to Cusco is an hour and a half, which is much preferred over the 24-hour bus ride, but be sure to book in advance, particularly in peak season.

The Best Time to visit Machu Picchu

This high altitude region of Peru is a very weather dependent destination. The area sees very distinct wet and dry seasons, with very extreme temperature differences too.

Summer is brutally hot and experiences massive rainfall, while winter is incredibly dry with cold nights. The wet season generally runs from November to April and the dry from May to October, and this coincides with the low and peak season for tourism.

Traveling to Machu Picchu in the wet season is not recommended, as the rainfall can block roads and cause dangerous landslides. Permits may not be issued for multi-day hikes either during the rainy months, and February will see the trails closed entirely for maintenance.

The most popular months are the dry days between June and August. If you want to travel then, be sure to book far in advance, as spots on the hikes and even plane tickets can be sold out months ahead of time.

From Cusco to Machu Picchu - Everything You Need to Know

Altitude Acclimatization

Cusco is found at an altitude of 3400 meters (11,154 feet), while Machu Picchu itself lies at an altitude of 2400 meters (7,874 feet). If you are flying straight into Cusco, and you are more used to life at sea level, then the altitude may cause unprecedented problems before you even begin your trip to Machu Picchu.

Many travelers will choose to stay in Cusco for a few days to get used to the high altitude, before attempting any hikes. Machu Picchu is at a lower altitude than Cusco, so if you have everything planned and arranged in advance, then you can travel straight onto the lower altitude.

You can spend a few days acclimatizing in the surrounding area, at lower levels, before attempting any strenuous hikes, to ensure you get the most out of your trip. In reality, you will find that it’s Cusco that causes the trouble, not Machu Picchu, but traveling to Cusco is unavoidable.

From Cusco to Machu Picchu - Everything You Need to Know

Travel From Cusco to Machu Picchu

There are several different routes and methods available when it comes to traveling from Cusco to Machu Picchu. For those who have the time and the relevant fitness, the most popular method is to undertake a multi-day hike, allowing you to really immerse yourself in the incredible mountain scenery.

Those who are pressed for time or who would prefer not to hike, are best taking the train.

From Cusco to Machu Picchu - Everything You Need to Know

The Train From Cusco To Machu Picchu

Aguas Calientes can be reached by a combination of road and train. There are no direct trains from Cusco, instead, you need to make your way to the town of Poroy, about twenty minutes away.

From here, there are two companies running direct trains to Aguas Calientes. These companies are Peru Rail and Inca Rail. This journey takes about two hours and 45 minutes each way.

The second option is to travel to the town of Ollantaytambo, which is a ninety-minute bus ride from Cusco. From here are there more trains to Aguas Calientes, a journey time of around one hour and fifty minutes.

This can be a cheaper option or a good way to break up the journey by staying overnight in Ollantaytambo and exploring the other nearby Inca sites in the Sacred Valley.

Luxury travelers may want to consider the Hiram Bingham Train, run by Peru Rail and named after the explorer who rediscovered Machu Picchu. It’s an opulent journey, complete with gourmet dining and cultural displays, but there’s a price tag to match and limited reservations.

Our top recommended tours including Hiram Bingham Train:

  • Machu Picchu Full Day Tour by Train
  • Hiram Bingham Luxury Train to Machu Picchu
  • Belmond Hiram Bingham Train to Machu Picchu

Hiking The Inca Trail

The most popular long-distance walking route from Cusco to Machu Picchu is the Inca Trail. This is the classic hiking trail, and there are two or four-day options. It can be tough, as you endure drastic changes in altitude, so it’s best to acclimatize before and be physically fit.

The classic four-day hike begins at kilometer 82 of the railway line to Aguas Calientes, while the two-day hike begins further along and is a good option if you are pressed for time.

There are only a limited number of permits available for the Inca Trail so it’s necessary to book in advance. You can reserve your spot with tour companies before permits are even released each year to give you a higher chance of securing one, particularly in peak season, although even this isn’t guaranteed.

We recommend booking the Inca Trail with G Adventures , which operates an award-winning and sustainable Inca Trail experience. They are the best in the business and are frequently recognized for their program that operates out of Cusco.

Both of these trails lead through the iconic Sun Gate, for the best but busiest views of Machu Picchu.

From Cusco to Machu Picchu - Everything You Need to Know

The Salkantay Trail

The Salkantay Trail is a new addition to the Cusco to Machu Picchu multi-day hikes. Known as the Llama Trail, it’s essentially a back road into the ruins.

It’s an excellent option for those who either can’t get the Inca Trail permits or who prefer a quieter hike. It’s much more arduous, however, as it crosses the Salkantay Pass which at its peak height rises to 4600 meters (15,091 feet), so acclimatization is a must.

The trail takes five days to complete. The trek is best experienced with an experienced agency and we highly recommend booking the Salkantay Hike with G Adventures . They are an award-winning small group tour company that offers incredible trips.

From Cusco to Machu Picchu - Everything You Need to Know

Inka Jungle Trek

The Inka Jungle Trek is another popular alternative to the Inca Trail hike, and as the name suggests, this takes walkers through the jungle from Cusco to Machu Picchu.

It’s not just a hike, but more of an adrenaline-fueled journey to Machu Picchu. The trip involves off-road mountain biking, zip-lining between trees and trekking along rivers and through the mountains. It’s an epic trip that takes around three days to complete.

Our top recommended tours of Inka Jungle Trek:

  • Inka Jungle Trek to Machu Picchu
  • Inka Jungle Trek 4 days

Where to Stay – Aguas Calientes

The closest town to Machu Picchu is Aguas Calientes – also known these days as Machu Picchu Pueblo. This is a ragged, tourist hub that has expanded quickly, as it’s literally in the shadow of the ruins.

A road leads to Machu Picchu from the town and it’s an uphill walk of one and a half hours each way, or you can take the tourist bus to speed things up exponentially.

There is one expensive hotel in the town and many budget rooms to choose from, but technically you could make the trip to Aguas Calientes, then to Machu Picchu in a day from Cusco.

How to Travel to Machu Picchu

Don’t get lost when you visit the Lost City of the Incas.

tours to machu picchu from cusco

Chris Marinaccio/Travel + Leisure

Every year, millions of people visit the imposing and mysterious Incan citadel of Machu Picchu in Peru. But getting to the massive agricultural terraces, intricate stone constructions, and epic hilltop views of this UNESCO World Heritage site isn't cheap, and it involves some trickier-than-usual logistics. Here's how to expertly navigate your way to Peru's most famous destination, plus our top tips for enjoying your visits to the nearby cities of Cusco and Aguas Calientes on your way.

Reasons to Visit

Machu Picchu is one of the world's most dreamed-about destinations . Mystery is at the center of Machu Picchu's appeal, as the city holds many secrets about the ancient Incan Empire. Knowledge-seekers will find plenty of interesting tidbits to mull over about the city's archaeological significance and the various scientific and religious practices of the Incans who built the magnificent site.

Alongside this adventure through time, a trip to Machu Picchu offers an opportunity to experience Peruvian culture and gastronomy . If you stay a while, you can even make trips to many of the country's other historical wonders, like the perplexing and enormous images etched into the hills of the Nazca Valley , the origins of which are not entirely understood. Throw in a few dishes of tangy ceviche, a rainbow-striped mountain , a desert oasis that looks more like a painting than a real place, and many pisco sours to wash it all down, and you've got a fantastic trip in one of the world's most naturally beautiful countries .

Best Time to Visit

Machu Picchu is open year-round. October through April is the official rainy season, but it can rain at any time. And while peak season is July and August, you should always expect crowds. Sundays can be the most crowded, because that's when people who live in the Cusco province are allowed into the site for free, in addition to the daily visitor limit.

Morning? Afternoon? There is no perfect time to visit Machu Picchu. These days, the site is crowded at all hours and the weather is unpredictable. However, during the rainy season, the mornings are most likely to be foggy. Depending on your disposition, fog ruins the view or adds a patina of mystery to it. Afternoons can be slightly less crowded as day-trippers return to the train station for their trip back to Cusco.

How to Get Acclimated to the Altitude

The last thing you need on your day in Machu Picchu is a case of altitude sickness . Wherever you're coming from is probably much, much lower than Cusco (over 11,000 feet) or Machu Picchu (just shy of 8,000 feet). Give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination, so you can adjust gradually and avoid common symptoms like nausea, headaches, dizziness, fatigue, and shortness of breath.

Unless you've booked a trip to Machu Picchu that requires an overnight stay in Cusco, we recommend immediately taking the train from Cusco to Aguas Calientes (officially called Machu Picchu Pueblo), the town nearest Machu Picchu. Spend a night or two getting used to the relatively low elevation of Aguas Calientes, at about 6,700 feet, then explore Machu Picchu before returning to Cusco. You can also spend time elsewhere in the Sacred Valley, which, by nature, is lower in elevation than the surrounding mountains. Avoid alcohol and physical exertion while acclimatizing and drink as much water or coca tea as you can stand to help your body slowly adjust to the thinner air.

How to Get There

If Machu Picchu is your goal, you will have to fly into the capital of Lima and then catch a connecting flight to Cusco. From there, the easiest way to get from Cusco to Machu Picchu is to take the train to Aguas Calientes, a scenic 3.5-hour trip each way along tracks that run right along the Urubamba River in the Sacred Valley, with dramatic canyon walls on either side. However, note that the so-called Cusco train station is actually in the nearby town of Poroy. It's a cheap taxi ride, but give yourself at least an hour to get from central Cusco to the train station. Traffic in Cusco can be brutal and seemingly never-ending road work makes things even more congested.

Taking the Train

Rory Fuller/Travel + Leisure

There are three train companies to choose from: Inca Rail , Peru Rail , and the Belmond Hiram Bingham train . The Hiram Bingham service is on a gorgeous train gleaming with brass and polished wood and includes a white tablecloth meal with wine during your journey. It's also much more expensive than Inca Rail or Peru Rail, both of which offer comfortable passage on different types of trains — including ones designed with panoramic windows for an additional fee. Whichever train you choose, book as far in advance as possible. Tickets sell out weeks ahead in some months.

If train tickets from Cusco are sold out, all is not lost. Try to buy another train ticket to Aguas Calientes that departs from the town of Ollantaytambo in the Sacred Valley, or vice versa. Taxis and minivans between Ollantaytambo and Cusco (just over an hour each way) are plentiful. If you have the time, plan an overnight in Ollantaytambo to check out the town, which still features many Incan-built streets and buildings, as well as the archaeological site of the same name. Arrive as early as possible at the site to enjoy the sunrise light and beat the tour buses.

You can also stay overnight in Urubamba, a 20-minute drive from Ollantaytambo, which has a bevy of luxury and boutique hotels such as Tambo del Inka, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa ; Sol y Luna, Relais & Châteaux ; and Aranwa Sacred Valley Hotel & Wellness .

How to Get Tickets

Even when you buy your ticket in advance, guides are required at Machu Picchu, whether you're on an organized tour or traveling independently. Hire one outside the gates, or make a booking in Aguas Calientes.

To control overtourism at Machu Picchu, the Peruvian government has set up a ticketing system , split up into five different circuits. Tickets must be purchased in advance and cost approximately $42 for adults and $20 for students and minors. When you book online, you will be able to see exactly how many tickets are available for that day. On the day of your visit, you will choose between one of the five circuits. The stricter controls help to protect the site from the effects of too many visitors. Before you book, carefully look at the circuits and see which landmarks they include.

You'll need a separate ticket to climb Huayna Picchu (Circuit 4 + Wayna Picchu Mountain). The view looking down on the Incan ruins is a highlight for many but be aware that some sections of this strenuous trail are very narrow and steep. You'll have the choice of starting your climb between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. Go at 10 a.m.; there's a better chance any clouds will have lifted by then.

You can also climb to the peak of Machu Picchu, but this too requires a separate ticket (Macchupicchu Mountain + Circuit 3) and good knees. The trail is almost entirely stairs. You'll have the choice of starting your climb between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. Although it was open in the past, you will also need a separate ticket to make the short walk to the Inca Bridge (Circuit 1 or 2 + Inka Bridge). It's less than an hour round trip along a mostly flat trail to check out a precarious trail, now closed, which the Incas built along a rock face. The newest route, as of 2021, to Huchyu Picchu (Circuit 4 + Huchuypicchu Mountain) is also available with a separate ticket. It's shorter and easier than the other mountain hikes and you'll get a unique perspective of the ancient city.

The Inca Trail and Other Treks

Chris Marinaccio/Travel + Leisure

The other way to get from Cusco to Machu Picchu is to walk as part of an organized multiday Machu Picchu trek along the Inca Trail, a section of one of the hundreds of Incan roads built as the empire expanded. It might sound intimidating, but thousands of people make this trek every year. Dozens of tour operators offer Inca Trail hikes to Machu Picchu, with varying durations and levels of comfort (though all require camping). Note that the Inca Trail leading to Machu Picchu is closed for the entire month of February every year for maintenance.

For a different kind of Peru experience, some tour operators combine a visit to the iconic site with other activities or less-trodden routes to equally impressive sights in the Peruvian highlands. For example, the Inca Jungle Tour combines hiking, biking, rafting, and zip-lining on your way to Machu Picchu, and luxury tour operator andBeyond offers several Machu Picchu itineraries.

You can also drive (most of the way) to Machu Picchu from Cusco to the town of Hydroelectrica (there's a hydroelectric plant there). From there it's a three-hour hike up to Aguas Calientes and then on to Machu Picchu. Many tour companies in Cusco offer this route as a one- or two-day trip using private vans. Some of the most popular alternative routes include Salkantay Mountain, the second city of Choquequirao, and the Lares region.

Salkantay Mountain

For those who prefer a less crowded experience or want to see and experience other aspects of Peru on their way to Machu Picchu, there are many hiking alternatives: the second most popular way to hike to Machu Picchu is around massive Salkantay Mountain, one of the most imposing peaks in the Peruvian Andes at 20,569 feet. Many tour companies offer Salkantay Treks, but Apus Peru, an established and well-regarded Cusco tour company with a focus on sustainable and responsible tourism, offers an express trek , which shaves a day off the normal itinerary for those who want to push their physical limits on their way to Machu Picchu.

Choquequirao

Travelers interested in archaeology should consider the Choquequirao trek with a Machu Picchu extension. This itinerary includes spectacular (but very tough) hiking in the steep Apurimac Canyon and exploration of the Choquequirao archaeological site before arriving in Aguas Calientes and then exploring Machu Picchu.

The Lares Adventure from Mountain Lodges of Peru offers a great combination of Andean hiking and cultural encounters within Quechua communities before arriving in Aguas Calientes to explore the citadel. Other tour companies offer treks through the Lares region, but only this itinerary includes luxury accommodations in their own lodges and full service along the way.

Best Hotels and Resorts

Unfortunately, there are no ancient Incan hotels you can stay in when you arrive at Machu Picchu, and even those who arrive by the Inca Trail usually do so with camping tents. The closest you can get is the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge , which gives you easy access to the site, but you'll be far away from the dining and shopping of Aguas Calientes — either a strenuous 90-minute climb down the mountain or a harrowing 30-minute drive.

Where to Stay in Aguas Calientes

For a luxury stay in Aguas Calientes, you have two main options: the elegant Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo , located near the train station, and design-forward Sumaq Machu Picchu Hotel , a boutique property near the foot of Machu Picchu Mountain. But there are dozens of mid-range options, too, plus super-affordable hostels for backpackers like Nativus Hostel , which also has private rooms.

Where to Stay in Cusco

Cusco has more than its share of large, full-service hotels including Inkaterra La Casona , an 11-suite hotel in a 16th-century mansion; Belmond Hotel Monasterio in a former Jesuit seminary; the museum-like JW Marriott El Convento Cusco ; and the stately Palacio del Inka, A Luxury Collection Hotel . If a contemporary boutique is more your style, try El Mercado or Atiq Boutique Hotel .

Best Restaurants

When you're in Machu Picchu, there's a casual cafe and bar with a lovely deck just outside the entrance gates, but the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge's buffet lunch is your only sit-down-restaurant option. It's very good, if pricey. You can always pack your own lunch to eat when you get to Machu Picchu, though, and look forward to a celebratory meal when you make it back to Aguas Calientes or Cusco.

Where to Eat and Drink in Aguas Calientes

As a whole, Aguas Calientes isn't exactly on the cutting edge of Peruvian cuisine. But walk down Av. Pachacutec and you'll find low-key eateries and bars, some serving a selection of Peru's growing crop of craft beers. There are also high-end restaurants inside the two luxury hotels, Inkaterra and Sumaq, which are open to non-guests. More low-key traveler favorites include Restaurante Indio Feliz , serving up French-Peruvian dishes, and Mapacho Craft Beer Restaurant , where you can pair local specialties with craft beer from all over the country.

Where to Eat and Drink in Cusco

Significantly larger than Aguas Calientes, Cusco is one place where you should have no problem finding great restaurants. Cicciolina is a classic tapas bar that feels like a local hangout, serving international and Andean dishes out of an open kitchen. Kion, from the growing Cusco Restaurants group , is a stylish place to enjoy Cantonese cuisine. The decor is Chinese vintage, the flavors are subtle, and the atmosphere is festive.

Chicha is the first restaurant in Cusco from Peruvian superstar chef Gaston Acurio of Astrid & Gastón fame. Located on the second floor of a Colonial building, the restaurant offers haute Andean cuisine (alpaca carpaccio, quinoa with duck) in an airy and well-lit space. After dinner, you can head to Cholos pub near the main plaza, which keeps around a dozen different Peruvian craft beers on tap. Peruvian owner Rodrigo Cardenas is passionate and knowledgeable about all of them.

Best Things to Do in Machu Picchu

When you arrive at the citadel, you'll have to follow the route outlined on your ticket so you may want to study up on some of the city's most exciting sites before you decide. Among the most important are the Sacred Stone, an astronomical clock that corresponds with the spring and autumnal equinoxes, and the Temple of the Sun, which is a great example of the Incans' impressive masonry skills.

During your visit, make sure you have some spare cash (small bills and coins) in your pocket because you will need them to access the only bathroom at the site entrance. You will also need your passport to get into Machu Picchu, which means that to use the bathroom or grab food you should have your passport ready. Hang onto your ticket because you'll need it to get back in. It may seem like a hassle, but you'll be glad you have it on you because just outside the entrance gates, there's a barely marked station where you can get the novelty Machu Picchu stamp in your passport.

On your way to Machu Picchu, you'll also find several interesting attractions in Aguas Calientes and Cusco.

Things to Do in Aguas Calientes

The town takes its name from the thermal springs, which are open to the public for a small fee. You'll also find plenty of souvenir shops at the major market near the train station. While Machu Picchu is the main attraction, of course, you can also visit the Mariposario de Machupicchu butterfly sanctuary .

Things to Do in Cusco

Cusco's pre-Columbian buildings have given this city UNESCO World Heritage status , and its cobblestoned streets, great hotels, museums, nearby archaeological sites, and relaxed atmosphere make it worth spending at least a couple of days here.

Cusco is filled with historic sites both from the Incan and colonial times: don't miss the impressive Coricancha (also spelled Koricancha or Qorikancha), an Incan temple-turned-Spanish church; the Sacsayhuaman Incan ruins; and the Cusco Cathedral. Wander through the streets of the hip San Blas neighborhood, people-watch on the Plazas de Armas, and shop at the San Pedro Market.

Accessibility

Travelers in wheelchairs can access the Peruvian world wonder with the help of tour companies like Wheel the World , which designed the first-ever wheelchair-accessible tour of Machu Picchu. You can contact the company to learn more about their services and their custom wheelchairs that are specially made to travel over the many steps and uneven terrain of the ancient city.

Packing Tips

Whether you're planning a multiday trek or a quick in-and-out day trip, you should be prepared to dress for mountain conditions . Bring water and a rain jacket, even if it looks like a beautiful sunny day. Speaking of the sun, remember that the ozone layer over Peru is compromised, and that, combined with the elevation, makes the sun extremely strong here, so wear a hat and use plenty of high SPF sunscreen. Keep insect repellant handy as well.

Don't bring drones, umbrellas, walking sticks, or trekking poles since they're all prohibited at Machu Picchu. Travelers who require sticks or poles for mobility can bring them in but only with protective rubber tips over the ends.

The proposed Machu Picchu plan for October 2024

Pre-Booking bus ticket to entrance

Circuit 2 including Inca bridge - booking time slot 08:00 to 09:00

Train depart Aguas Calientes 13:37 and arriving at Ollantaytambo at 15:04

Questions are.....

Is the arrival time in Aguas Calientes OK to ensure we make the bus, considering the potential bus queues , to the entrance within the ticket entrance window time?

Roughly how many hours would we need to do circuit 2 and bus descent as I'm looking to prebook train back to Ollantaytambo, then will be heading to Cusco , same day?

Thanks in advance of any good tips or advice

All a bit tight I think.

Most recommendations are to arrive 2 -2.5 hours before the start of your entry slot.

Most people seems to spend 3-3.5 hrs doing circuit 2 and the Inca Bridge and getting back down to town .Some more some less.

You will save a bit of time prebooking the bus tickets but there will still be queues.

I would get and earlier train and get to the site at the beginning of your citadel entry time.

If you have the time I would do that

You also need to be at the stations 30 minutes before your train departures

@Cedezlepassage

Many thanks for this info, most helpful

My ticket for May (bought from the old site in February) has one time top left for entrance to the citadel 12:00 and next to it a time to entry to the Inca Bridge of 13:00 - 14:00

Things may have changed with the new site?

Does this look pretty reasonable or should I book a later slot for entry?

Thanks again

Journey to Machu Picchu

A guest arrives at the world-famous ruins of Machu Picchu's ancient Inca citadel

Travel in style from Cusco to Machu Picchu and walk in the steps of explorer Hiram Bingham, to encounter the origins of the Inca civilisation.

When the American explorer Hiram Bingham first visited Peru in 1908, he wrote of its snow-capped mountains: “They tempted me to go and see what lay beyond. In the ever-famous words of Rudyard Kipling there was ‘Something hidden! Something lost behind the ranges. Lost and waiting for you. Go!’”

When he returned in 1911, Bingham famously re-discovered the legendary Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. It is precisely the explorer’s sense of curiosity and adventure that draws people from all over the world to Peru. The country’s most iconic site, Machu Picchu, now receives close to a million visitors each year. They each long to witness with their own eyes something that can only be seen to be believed.

It makes sense that the high altitude of the region requires travellers to take some time to acclimatize before visiting the ancient ruins. Getting a sense of Cusco and the surrounding areas gives you a rich insight into the local culture. It also prepares you for the awesome magnitude of Machu Picchu.

Angled low-light shot of crowds outside Iglesia de la Compañia de Jesús in Cusco's Plaza Mayor, seen through arcade arches.

Cusco itself is an oasis of a city. Its elegant, centuries-old Spanish colonial buildings are beautiful against a backdrop of wild mountains. It was built on Inca foundations.A sense of dual history is woven through the local culture and architecture. Stay at its heart and soak up the history at Monasterio, A Belmond Hotel or Palacio Nazarenas, A Belmond Hotel . From here, fall in love with the cobbled artists’ quarter, San Blas. It’s home to many galleries and friendly coffee houses. Take in the splendor of the city’s beautiful baroque Cathedral, or soak up the sounds and sights of bustling San Pedro market.

To take the luxurious Hiram Bingham, A Belmond Train to Machu Picchu, you’ll go to Poroy, just northwest of Cusco. The story goes that its name comes from the early Spanish who, en route to Cusco, would stop over, saying “For today (por hoy in Spanish), we rest here.”

For many visitors, their experience of Machu Picchu is a profound one. Staying a night or more at Sanctuary Lodge, A Belmond Train is a blissful way to remain in the region and absorb its magical atmosphere. A walk around the orchid gardens is a particular pleasure. This uniquely located hotel offers unrivalled access to Machu Picchu. Those compelled by Hiram Bingham’s sense of urgency and excitement can enter the citadel privately at 6am. Just like in Rudyard Kipling’s poem, you’ll find Machu Picchu waiting for you, in the swirling mists.

Planning a Trip to Peru? Skip Machu Picchu.

B efore you start trolling me, hear me out. Yes, Machu Picchu is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Yes, it is a breathtaking feat of ancient engineering, a foundational part of Inca history, and incredibly scenic and beautiful. I’m not denying any of that.

But…the mountaintop ruins of Machu Picchu are claustrophobically crowded, seeing 1.2 million annual visitors in a relatively small area. They’re also expensive to visit compared to nearby options and, for anyone who likes novelty, severely scripted. Guides take you on a prescribed loop, recite the same talking points and place a huge emphasis on helping you get the perfect Instagram shot. That’s all fine and well, just not my cup of tea. Perhaps it’s not yours, either.

Alternatively, you could skip Machu Picchu for something off the beaten path. This may sound blasphemous, but, trust me, it’s not.

Tourism is Peru’s third biggest industry and there are plenty of small towns and villages that rely on this income to stay afloat — with the pandemic and recent political unrest , many of them are struggling. To help you visit one of these local hidden gems, here are three different travel ideas near Cusco:

Start By Finding a Knowledgeable Guide

When I was young, cheap and traveled internationally with just a backpack, I never hired a guide. In some ways this is just as appealing today, using the internet as a resource for food, accommodations, and experiences. Yet, over the years I’ve learned that nothing beats local knowledge; even the top travel websites and agencies know far less than those who live, work, and play in these places daily. The value of a guide easily offsets the cost — the experience is much more immersive..

Here’s an Authentic Peruvian Ceviche Recipe You Can Whip Up Stateside

Ceviche, Peru's national dish, is celebrated in the country every summer

A good guide will allow you to enter homes, sit down for meals and eat traditional food, and be part of rituals that have been around for centuries. This is the core reason I travel these days, to search out moments of human connection that bring us closer together. Plus, selfishly, hiring a guide allows me to relax more, without having to worry about juggling logistics, schedules, or bartering in a foreign language.

If you’re heading to Cusco, reach out to Jose Condor and his guiding company, Peru by Locals , which specializes in treks and tours, Incan traditions, medicine, and history, and exploring places that few others know about. Jose grew up in a mountain village near the Sacred Valley and is fluent in Quechua, Spanish, and English. He studied tourism at University and has been guiding for nearly two decades. Below are our top three boutique trip suggestions, for all types of adventures.

Hidden Gems to Explore in Peru

Llama trekking around Rainbow Mountain. For those interested in a multi-day hiking adventure — and a good replacement for the Inca Trail trek to Machu Picchu — a visit to the Cordillera Vilcanota is worth your time. After a three-hour drive from Cusco you’ll arrive at a popular destination called Rainbow Mountain, which opened in 2015. This is what most people come to see, but just the tip of the iceberg for you.

Instead of fighting the crowds on a day hike at Rainbow, the richer way to see this area is trekking with llamas on a two- or three-night adventure. This region is inhabited by small llama and alpaca herding communities who trade with farmers at lower elevations. Jose builds personalized itineraries through the maze of local trails and will bring a small support crew to cook traditional meals, set up and break down camp each day, and facilitate a safe and fun trip. Llama trekking truly is an experience like no other.

Food and culture in the Sacred Valley. For those looking for a slower pace and deeper culinary experience, we recommend an homestay in the Sacred Valley, a region in the Andean highlands. Just an hour north of Cusco, this fertile valley played a crucial role for the Inca, growing most of the maize for the empire. The valley is littered with lesser known archaeological sites to visit, too.

Close to his childhood home and deeply tied in with the local communities, Jose organizes immersive food experiences with local farmers, offering guests a first-hand look at traditional agriculture and, of course, a chance to try delicious Peruvian dishes like Lomo Saltado, Rocoto Relleno and Cuy.

Mountain bike tours near Cusco: For adrenaline seekers, a great way to explore the singletrack trails on the hills surrounding Cusco is by bike. Many of these routes were once Incan footpaths, giving you a chance to ride through ancient history and learn about Incan architecture with Jose as your guide. As an avid mountain biker, Jose guides small groups on custom day tours, accommodating your skill level, schedule, and fitness level. Cusco is based at 11,000, so biking can be challenging!

Final Verdict: Go Off the Beaten Path

While it may sound like heresy to skip Machu Picchu on any trip to Peru, a deeper dive proves otherwise. There are a wide variety of lesser-visited options that give you a more authentic and immersive experience. Whether you’re looking to learn about the history of the Incan Empire, eat traditional food, or experience Peruvian culture, the better decision is to go off the beaten path.

Hiring a guide like Jose Condor unlocks an entirely new suite of options, from llama trekking in the Vilcanota, to spending a day with traditional farmers in the Sacred Valley, or mountain biking ancient footpaths around the Incan capital of Cusco. All you need to decide is which one fits you best.
