Ramayana Trails

Many generations have been fascinated by the story of Ramayana and as a result, there has been a significant impact on art and culture throughout India and Southeast Asia. This ancient poem is closely associated with Sri Lanka because several sites that prove a connection to the events in the story have been found in Sri Lanka. The Ramayana Tour in Sri Lanka is designed to explore only these particular sites and connections.

You will be greeted by a Kingfisher representative upon arrival at the Bandaranaike International Airport, who will also be your chauffeur cum guide for the rest of this Ramayana Tour in Sri Lanka. Srilanka Ramayana Yatra associates itself with Sundara kanda of Ramayana. After seeing Srilanka, many missing links of Ramayana can be known. The difficulties faced by Lord Hanuman while searching Mother Sita in Ravana’s Srilanka can be picturised only after completing this Yatra.

I applaud Tirtha Yatra for conducting this tour so well, taking us to beautiful places fully green, good roads, beautiful Asoka Vatika, especially Asoka vriksha with beautiful flowers grown only in this part of Srilanka.

All should undertake this Yatra to get over the hurdles in their lives as darshan of Sankat Mochan Hanuman located Mother Sita and unites Her with Lord Sri Ram.

We’re happy that no sooner Yatra was completed. Thanks to Tirtha Yatra team for making Sri Lanka Ramayana Yatra so memorable.

I was part of the recently concluded Sri Lanka Ramayana Yatra from 1 November to 8 November 2019. I place on record my sincere appreciation for Team Tirtha Yatra for their sincere efforts to make the trip comfortable to yathris, especially senior citizens. True to the caption of the tour, the one organised could cover many places related to Sundara Kanda and Yudha Kanta. Coverage of these places certainly enhanced our faith in the Epic. As a bonus, we could cover many other historical places relating to Bhudha, Shiva and Karthigeya too. The accommodations arranged were, as is usual with Tirtha Yatra, excellent. Best of Satvik food was generally provided in an alien land which is not Satvik in general. The consistent greenery outside did go to lower the stress and strain of long bus travels day after day. On the whole a satisfying tour. Thanks.

It’s a Yatra for all ages. We have read various books on the epic Ramayana but to co-relate what we have read with the events that have truly unfolded, we have to visit the places. Its truly an amazing experience and I can boldly tell others that the incidents explained in the books have really happened with due evidences. The sites and places visited are truly awesome and exhilarating too as they are situated in scenic beauty spots along the beautiful beaches, lush green forests, flowing rivers and meadows on the hills. Thank You Tirtha Yatra for providing an opportunity to explore such lovely places in Sri Lanka which not only enhanced my spiritual experience but also made me to offer my obeisance to mother nature/earth. A Yatra I yearn to undertake once again in the near future.

There is a pond called ‘Sita Tear Pond’ nearby, which is said to be formed from Seetha Devi’s tears. • Munneswaram Temple: Being one of the oldest Hindu temples in Sri Lanka, this temple has a deep connection with Lord Ram. According to a legend, this is the place where he prayed for God Shiva after defeating Raavan. Since Raavan was a Brahmin and killing a Brahmin (Brahmhatya) is considered a sin in Hinduism. Lord Shiva suggested to Lord Ram that the only remedy for this would be to install five lingams.

He lifted her from the flames unharmed and presented her to Lord Rama who explained this test was only necessary to prove the truth of her purity and innocence to everybody. • According to Ramayana, after meeting Seetha Devi Lord Hanuman decided to test the strength of the mighty King Ravana and his army of Rakshasas. In the event that unfolded Lord Hanuman’s tail was set on fire by the Rakshasas, who in turn went on to torch some parts of King Ravana’s empire. The reason Lakshmana crowned Vibeeshana, was Kelaniya because Rama had to return to India as he had to continue his self-exile of 14 years to honour the commitment to his father, King Dasarath of Ajodhya.
  • Vibeeshana is considered one of the four guardian deities of Sri Lanka, and temples for Vibeeshana are found throughout Sri Lanka. A painting of Kind Vibeeshana adorns the new Parliament of Sri Lanka. In fact, there are no temples dedicated to Ravana, but many exist for Vibeeshana; this goes to prove that his stand towards dharma & justice made people revere him as a god in Sri Lanka. RAMAYANA TRAIL – SRI LANKA

Ramayana trail - Sri Lanka

Read this Article   தமிழ்   or  हिन्दी

In the epic Ramayana, Sri Lanka recreates a vital role in shaping the novel. The place of King Ravana is defined as an island with residences and castles made of gold. Rama's troops constructed a bridge on the ocean to cross over. They ultimately defeated Ravana and carried Sita home. Visit Sri Lanka and Discover the Ramayana trail.

Adam's bridge Mannar

The Ramayana trail begins in the north region of Sri Lanka, where the Ram Sethu joins Sri Lanka with India. The remote island of Mannar, accessible from the Sri Lankan mainland by a causeway, examines like a city at the planet's border. Deserted in most parts with a lighthouse dominating the unobstructed, oxidised pier, you can consider the remains of the bridge in the shape of shallows expanding into the Indian Ocean, connecting it to Rameshwaram and Dhansukodi in India from atop the Dutch fort. The Ram Sethu was discovered artificial and paved the way for the Vanarsena to pass over onto Lanka. Koneswaram Temple is above the ridges at Trincomalee, a famous tourist city on the coast of eastern Sri Lanka. The untouched panoramic splendours of Trincomalee make it one of the most attractive locations in Sri Lanka.

sri lanka ramayana tour places

The journey then moves to the Eastern part. Set in the low mountains just outside Kandalama in Dambulla, the ruins of Sigiriya are considered to be Ravana's palace and can be accessed by a flight of stairs numbering more than a thousand.

Ramayana talks of Ravana's mighty aircraft, The Pushpak Vimana. It is expressed that Ravana had six airfields with many other mythological flying aeroplanes and chariots that he succeeded from Gods and other kings in the combats. Thotupola Kanda is one of the six airfields. After Ravana kidnapped Goddess Sita, he disembarked here. Thotupola Kanda is the third-highest mountain peak in Sri Lanka and is a famous trekking location. Hiking to Thotupola Kanda is one of the many adventurous items in Sri Lanka.

Although just a few remnants of a colossal rock citadel exist from the 5th century, this 'lion paw’-shaped fort has also been considered to be built by King Kasyapa. While the walls feature quite a few paintings akin to the Gupta-style images at the Ajanta caves, the museum near the bottom of the staircase showcases the beauty of royal architecture and an ingenious hydraulic system that ferried water from the nearby ponds to the top of the mountain.

To get rid of this dosha, Rama stops here, prays to Shiva and establishes Shiv Lingas, which have been recently completed into typical Dravidian style temples replete with a plethora of colours and statues within them. The British settlers may have loved the incredible mountains of Nuwara Eliya a bit down south in the 18th century as they grew the world-famous Ceylon tea and made enormous profits. Still, the hills are rumoured to be part of the beautiful Ashoka Vatika, where Ravana had kept Sita captive. Although the marvellous gardens have turned into thick forests, the Hakgala Botanical Gardens offer the beauty of the Vatika in all its glory. A trip to Nuwara Eliya cannot be complete without a visit to one of the famous Sri Baktha Hanuman Temple in Ramboda. On these cliffs of Ramboda, where Hanuman was exploring for Sitadevi, the Chinmaya task of Sri Lanka constructed a temple with Hanuman as the presiding divinity. On full moon day each month, certain poojas are functioned and witnessed by thousands of believers.

The Seetha Amman Kovil temple retains quite an importance in the novel as it is considered to stand where Hanuman encountered Sita for the only time in AshokaVatika while reassuring her of his struggles to liberate him. The temple, accomplished across two levels over the river, is sheltered with golden-coloured sculptures of symbols from the epic. On looking down from the lower level, you will be competent to see the demarcated footsteps of Lord Hanuman. The location furthermore earns significance because there is a summit peak in the shape of Hanuman.

Ravana waterfalls in Ella believed that Sita bathed in a waterhole that got the water falling from this waterfall. You can also visit Ravana caves that are around Ravana falls. The Ravana cave consists of a part of the tunnel connected to the Ravana Falls in Ella. Tales say King Rama of India had a beautiful wife, Queen Sita. So he kidnapped Queen Sita, brought her to Sri Lanka and hid her in the Ravana caves. The tunnels functioned as a quick conveyance through the cliffs and a hidden route. And believe tunnels connect all the important cities in Sri Lanka. A more intimate gaze at these underpasses reveals that they are artificial and not just natural appearances. The architectural elements of these tunnels demonstrate the intelligent way of construction by King Ravana.

Rumassala rock is one of the five Sri Lankan sites from parts of Mount Dronagiri. They fell when Hanuman carried the Dronagiri on his flight back to Lanka to use its Sanjiwani herb to rescue Lakshmana and Rama. They needed this medical plant to be reanimated after suffering painful wounds. Rumassala is also said to be a place of Sita during her visit to Lanka. Another critical place called Seenigama Devalaya was the landing place from where Sugriva, King of the Varanas and their monkey army, undertook his attack on Ravana's affliction troops.

One of the paces found just on the outskirts of Colombo , and the Vibhishana Palace is considered to have been granted to Ravana's brother after the defeat of Lanka by Ram. Although it now stands as a Buddhist temple called Kelani Viharaya with numerous sculptures and artworks of Lord Buddha embellishing the walls, it remains one of the main attractions where thousands of tourists throng every year.

Lord Ram won his war with Ravana; he established a Shiva Lingam at Manavari and sought Lord Shiva's blessings. It is known as Ramalingam Manavari Temple and is located in Chilaw, a town of great mythical significance and is one of the premium sites for The Ramayana trail. Known for its fantastic food and ambience, Millions of Hindu tourists visit Chilaw every year. Munneshwaram Temple is furthermore a destination of importance to Hindu pilgrims. Lord Shiva advised Rama to build lingams for him to find penance from the curse of killing a Brahmin.

Munnesswaran Temple

Sri Lanka Ramayana Tour

This temple situated in Chilaw is one of the oldest Hindu temples in Sri Lanka and one of must see Ramayana places in Sri Lanka that claims to have connections with the heritage of Ramayana. The Legend says that this was the place where Lord Rama prayed for God Shiva after he has defeated King Ravana who was a Brahmin. Killing a Brahmin or Brahmicide was considered as the greatest crime according to the Hindus, and when Lord Rama prayed for a remedy after killing Kingb Ravana he has preached that the only remedy would be to install five lingams (a symbol of divine generative energy as a symbol of Shiva).

Manavari Sivan Kovil

This Kovil or the Hindu temple is situated about 10 kilometers above Chilaw, in the Puttlam District North Western Province of Ceylon.

When Lord Rama killed the King Ravanam, God Shiva advised him to erect five lingams in Sri Lanka, so as to rectify the Brahmicide he committed by virtue of killing Ravana. This Manavari kovil holds the first Lingam installed by Lord Rama (Ramalingam). So this is one of most important Ramayana related places in Sri lanka.

During the battle King Ravana and his brother were both critically injured and, Hanuman was sent to the Himalaya in India to bring a lifesaving herb. Given the fact that hanuman has forgotten the name of the herb by the time he went to Himalaya, he has uprooted a part of the forest and bought it to Lanka.

Rumassala is considered as one of the five places where Hanuman has dropped fragments of this mountain as it slipped from his hands while bringing it to Ravana. The other places are; Dolu kanda in Kurunegala, Ritigala in Anuradhapura Road, Thalladi in Mannar and Kachchativu in the North.

This is also known as the Adam’s Bridge, which is situated at Thalaimannar the top most point of Sri Lanka which is also the closest point to India. The history tells that when Lord Rama got to know Princess Seetha was kept in captive in Ceylon, he with the help of hanuman and his army built this bridge using stones (corals) with his name on it and these corals can be seen if you visit the Panchamukhi Hanuman temple in Rameshwaram.

Ravana Cave and Temple

sri lanka ramayana tour places

This is situated about 2 kilometers from Ella. If you observe the rocks and the caves patiently you will see that these are not natural caves but man made ones, thus showing the architectural intelligence of King Ravana. The cave has openings to several larger caves which ends after about 10 feet to the inside and one smaller cave which seems to have no end at all and it said to believe that this cave leads to various parts of the country. The reason behind making the caves would have been to travel within the country without drawing much attention.

Amongst the aforesaid Ramayana sites in Sri Lanka here is a list of other sites of Sri Lankan Ramayana trail that you could visit while on your vacation.

1. Thiruketheeswaram temple – Mannar 2. Koneswaram Kovil – Trincomalee 3. Sigiriya – Dambulla 4. Bhakta Hanuman Temple – Ramboda (on the route to Nuwaraeliya) 5. Ashoka Vatika – Nuwaraeliya 6. Venture on a Ramayana Trail to behold the sacred sites and stories from the epic you grew up listening to

Sigiriya, Sri Lanka

This is the story of love, devotion and the triumph of good over evil. Ramayana , the popular ancient Indian epic, does not just narrate the timeless tale of Lord Rama, the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu and his consort Devi Sita, but illustrates the importance of overcoming one’s ego and desires in the pursuit of dharma. Mainly spread across India, Nepal and Sri Lanka, this tale holds immense importance for devotees and pilgrims seeking to connect with the spiritual and cultural heritage of these countries. The Ramayana Trail is a pilgrimage route that traces the footsteps of Lord Rama, Devi Sita and their loyal companions, leaving behind sacred sites and stories that will be told for ages to come.

Janakpur, Madhesh, Nepal

Panchvati, Maharashtra

sri lanka ramayana tour places

The circuit then takes yatris to Panchvati, located in the Dandakaranya Forest. It was here that Sage Agastya directed the divine trio to stay during their exile. Panchvati is a part of the Dandakaranya Forest. The trio in exile moved deep into the forest, visited the hermitage of Atri, and sought his blessings. His wife, Anusuiya, gave jewellery to Sita as a gift that she dropped in Kishkindha while being abducted to Sri Lanka. It was in Panchvati, where Suparnakha’s nose (Ravana’s sister) was disfigured by Laxman. Her brothers Khar and Dushan were killed by Rama and Laxman when they came to avenge their sister. Thus, Ravana hatched the plan to abduct Sita and executed it in disguise as a rishi. Stay at: The Vern At BLVD, Trambakeshwar Road.

Bhadrachalam, Telangana

sri lanka ramayana tour places

Proceeding southward, one can arrive in Bhadrachalam, often referred to as the Ayodhya of the South. This sacred town is believed to have been visited by Lord Rama, Sita and Lakshmana during their exile. Kollam, Kerala

sri lanka ramayana tour places

Transferring to the neighbouring state, one arrives in Kollam, where the Jatayu Earth Centre stands as a tribute to the legendary vulture that valiantly fought to save Sita from Ravana’s clutches. Stay at: Leela Ashtamudi, Mathilil.

Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu

sri lanka ramayana tour places

The final stop in India is Rameshwaram, a sacred site where Lord Rama is said to have built a bridge across the sea to reach Sri Lanka. Travellers visit the Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple, where Lord Rama is believed to have worshipped Lord Shiva before laying the stepping stone, quite literally. Dhanushkodi is the alleged spot where Lord Rama marked a spot with his bow (dhanush) to build a bridge (Ramsetu) connecting Rameshwaram (Tamil Nadu) and Mannar Island (Sri Lanka) to rescue his dear wife held in captivity. Stay at: The Residency Towers, Aathi Kaadu.

Munneswaram Temple, Chilaw, Sri Lanka

sri lanka ramayana tour places

Crossing the waters to Sri Lanka, travellers first make a quick pit stop at Munneswaram Temple, where Lord Rama prayed to Lord Shiva after committing the worst crime named brahmahasti (the sin of killing a brahmin). Legend has it that Lord Shiva blessed Lord Rama and advised him to install and pray to a few lingams at several places to get rid of dosham. Stay at: Coco Village Hotel, Kumarakattuwa.

Sigiriya Rock, Sigiriya, Sri Lanka

sri lanka ramayana tour places

An ancient rock fortress crowning the northern Matale district was a former fort that King Kashyapa (AD 477–495) transformed into his new capital by building a palace on the plateau top with a lion-shaped gateway. Besides, this UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site is also believed to have been where Lankapati’s majestic palace — made of solid gold and crafted by Kubera, his half-brother — stood. Stay at: Hotel Sigiriya, Hotel Road.

Manavari Temple, Bangadeniya, Sri Lanka

sri lanka ramayana tour places

This part of the circuit also includes Manavari Temple, the first place where Lord Rama installed and prayed to the Siva Lingam. At present this lingam is named Ramalingam as this lingam was erected by Ram himself. Stay at: Anantaya Resort and Spa Chilaw, Karukupane.

Thirukoneswaram Kovil, Trincomalee , Sri Lanka

sri lanka ramayana tour places

Trincomalee, believed to be built by Sage Agastya, makes another important stop on our trail. This temple is deeply intertwined with the epic narrative of the Ramayana as it marks the second lingam built by Lord Rama here to get rid of the brahmahasti dosham. Stay at: Trinco Blu by Cinnamon, Sarvodaya Road.

Sri Bhakta Hanuman Temple, Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka

sri lanka ramayana tour places

Our journey also takes us to the Sri Bhakta Hanuman Temple, a point from where Hanuman secretly looks for Sita. This temple is a testament to Hanuman’s unwavering devotion to find the devi before he lit Lanka ablaze. Stay at: Jetwing St Andrew’s, St Andrew’s Road.

The Hakgala Botanical Gardens, Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka

sri lanka ramayana tour places

Believed to be the modern-day site of Ashok Vatika. This garden also houses the revered Sita Amman Temple. It was here that Hanuman, the devoted disciple of Lord Rama, met Sita and later set the entire Lanka ablaze. Today, this place is known as Seeta Eliya. Nearby, the site of Divurumpola Buddhist Temple marks where goddess Sita performed the fire test to prove her chastity. Stay at: The Heritage Grand, Grand Hotel Road.

Ritigala, Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka

sri lanka ramayana tour places

Our pilgrimage moves on to Ritigala, the highest mountain peak in Sri Lanka. This mystical location is believed to be filled with magical herbs and plants of medicinal importance. This is said to be the same hill (Dronagiri) Hanuman brings from the Himalayas in order to help heal Laxman. Stay at: Gabaa Resort & Spa, Kashyapagama.

Dunuvila, Kandy, Sri Lanka

sri lanka ramayana tour places

The Ramayana trail comes to a close at Dunuvila, the place where Lord Rama fired the brahmastram at King Ravana, which eventually killed him. Dunu means arrow and vila means lake. This place got its name because Lord Rama fired his arrow from this lake. Stay at: Fox Kandy, Richmond Hill.
