5 stars - Our guide Indika Prasad was exceptional. - in tour organising, our safety, commentary, after hours support with restaurants and dining, taxi and transport. On the sudden cancellation of the tour Indi kept us fully informed and worked with every individual to ensure that they were safely at the airport with tickets. He also assisted others who were NOT on his tour late into the night and again at 3am to ensure transport to airport. No stars!! We were NOT kept informed by Tourradar or Intrepid of the tour cancelation or need to leave country about pending airport closures. Nor have I found any support in seeking an outcome for a refund for the component of the tour that was cancelled.

V was a GREAT tour leader. Always there with a smile on his face. Knew who everyone was straight away without any of us needing to say our names. The amount of Knowledge he had about everything was so so so impressive. He would go out of his way to make sure we experienced everything. Pottery places, palm readers, elephant santuary amongst other things were all things we spoke about as a group and V went and found them all. He really is a great tour leader and Tru are lucky to have him as part of their crew

Lifetime Experience In Sri Lanka Tour

Lifetime Experience In Sri Lanka

We enjoyed our trip, however we were on our own and not with a group, which allowed for a lot of flexibility with our driver. Some of the attractions were not of interest, so we had the opportunity to forego those attractions. The accommodation was very good with the expectation of our last two stops, one of which had to be changed as it was horrible. Our driver Cami was a lovely man, but sadly he struggled with comprehension and conversational skills. To his credit however, he looked after us in a very professional way and went above and beyond many times.

We organised our tour to Srilanka in June. We selected ASY Tours as our travel partner and they were an excellent team to travel with.  The ASY Tours had their all-inclusive system to make us feel safe and comfortable. Everything they've planned was exceeding our expectations.  When minor problems occurred, the way the team reacted made us realise how much they are dedicated to provide us a safe and secure journey. They were really amazing.

Sri Lanka stole our hearts, and a huge part of that magic was thanks to Beauty Lanka Travels and our incredible guide, Niran. This 8-day tour was perfectly curated, packing in adventure, relaxation, and cultural immersion. Words can't describe just what an unforgettable experience this was. Niran, the Heart of the Tour: Words truly can't describe how amazing Niran was. He wasn't just a guide, he was a gracious host who embodied Sri Lankan hospitality. His knowledge of the history, culture, and wildlife was exceptional, and he always went the extra mile to ensure we had an unforgettable experience. Colombo, Caves & Kandy - 8 days Tour

Colombo, Caves & Kandy - 8 days

We loved this tour. We felt like it gave a good mix of different things to see in Sri Lanka. Our tour guide Akhtar was amazing. He was incredibly knowledgeable and was constantly sharing his expertise and interesting facts with us. He was very helpful and nothing was too much trouble for him. The tour was very 'On the Go' (up early and lots to do) but this was what we wanted. It was a great week full of interesting activities and tourist sights. My personal highlights would be walking up Sigiriya, the train ride through the mountains and the safari to Udawalawe National Park. The hotels were all comfortable with the best being the Jetwing Lake in Dambulla. The pool there was amazing, I only wish we had more time there as it was so beautiful and we arrived in the dark and left early morning so didn't get to fully enjoy the scenery. I would recommend this tour to others who wanted to experience some highlights of Sri Lanka.

We had an amazing time. We managed to see so many things during our tour and many thanks to the amazing tour guide. Coming back to Sri Lanka soon.

Love Sri Lanka. IntroTravel let me experience this beautiful country with amazing group and the tour guide.
The tour was perfect for my needs. Day in Kandy a bit of a muddle and wash out. Hotel to far out of town and no choice for food but the hotel and whilst ok not great. Prefer to Sri Lankan food. Amba estate amazing. Hotel J in Negombo and Unawatuna little more than a hostel Didn’t like at all. Same group as Jetwing and they are nice hotels. Guide very knowledgable and friendly. Not great value for money would have been better without using hotel j

Sri Lanka in 2023 – A Complete Travel Guide

by Blue Lanka Tours | Mar 3, 2023

sri lanka tour 2023

Tags such as “Paradise Island” and “Pearl of the Indian Ocean” associate with a country for a good reason! But yes, you will need to visit Sri Lanka yourself to know why the island nation is given attractive nicknames such as these.  Read this travel guide for some inspiration and some getting to know one of the most gorgeous countries in the world!

Formerly known as ‘Ceylon’, whether you have 1, 2 or 3 weeks to tour Sri Lanka, there are a wide range of activities and attractions that you can cover. Blue Lanka Tours presents you with an all-new travel guide for basic information about travelling to Sri Lanka, some of the must-visit destinations and what to expect during you Sri Lanka tour.

  • General Information
  • How to Get to Sri Lanka?
  • Visa Requirements
  • Why go to Sri Lanka?
  • What to Expect in Sri Lanka?

Where to start in Sri Lanka?

Transport in sri lanka, top places to visit in sri lanka, accommodation in sri lanka, general information – sri lanka.

The Capital city of Sri Lanka is Colombo, and other main cities include Kandy, Galle, Trincomalee and Jaffna. The Sri Lankan Rupee is the currency you will be using and the national languages are Sinhalese and Tamil, though you can get around easily by conversing in English. The country has a population of 22 million, and an area of 65’610 square kilometers. The common electricity voltage used across the country is 230 Voltz at 50Hz. If your appliances are 110 Volt, be sure to use a voltage adaptor in order to avoid burning out the cables. The electricity sockets are usually type D (three round pins) or type G (three rectangular pins). A travel adaptor will fit the purpose of different sockets being used for your devices.

How to get to Sri Lanka

By air is the only way to get to Sri Lanka. Direct flights are available from several popular destinations such as London, Paris, Frankfurt, Dubai, Doha, Kuwait, Oman, Dammam, Jakarta, Karachi, Lahore, Melbourne, Sydney, Tokyo, Guanghzou, Seoul, Shanghai, Male, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, New Delhi, Dhaka, Kaula Lumpur and more.

The main airport that offers most of the flight connections is Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake. Colombo, Jaffna, Hambantota and Batticaloa are destinations where international airports are present but offer very restricted flight options and poor road connections.

Visa Requirements for Sri Lanka

To enter Sri Lanka, visas can be obtained in advance via the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system by going through the following link: https://eta.gov.lk/slvisa/

The ETA is initially valid for 30 days but can be extended for up to 6 months. A 2-day transit visa is given free for all applicants. Apart from that, the visa fees vary from $20-$55 depending on the purpose of your visit, duration of visa and number of entries required. If you are unable to obtain the ETA in advance, visa on arrival is possible at the airport. At present, citizens of Singapore, Maldives and Seychelles are exempted from obtaining an ETA/visa to visit Sri Lanka.

Why visit Sri Lanka?

From a very rough past, Sri Lanka has rapidly developed over the last decade, giving the country a fresh start and making it easily accessible to tourists from across the world. From perfect surf breaks to pristine beaches aligned with coconut palms, scenic hill country, wide variety of wildlife, and its rich historical culture, the fame is for good reason indeed! Not to forget the warm smiles and delicious food! The people of Sri Lanka have been classified by tourists as the friendliest you will come across in most of your travels.

What to expect in Sri Lanka?

If you are travelling to Sri Lanka for the first time, you probably may not know what to expect. There are several things that are different to a standard situation in your home county. However, to put it simply, there are two main things you need to know about in Sri Lanka.

The weather – being a tropical country located on the lines of the equator, high levels of humidity, frequent monsoon rains, and thunderstorms are common in all random parts of Sri Lanka. If you are particular about which coast you’d like to spend most time on, study the monsoons and pick the right time to go to Sri Lanka. From December to April is the peak season for the south and west coast while May to October is peak season on the east coast. Off-season rain should also be expected on random days, but be aware that these won’t last for more than a few hours and are always a welcome cooling solution for hot and humid days.

The roads – compared to other similar Asian countries, Sri Lanka has a good road network and the standards of the roads are especially good – more so on certain routes such as Negombo, Anuradhapura, Trincomalee, Jaffna. And the scenic views of the hills are of course unmatchable!

The bright lights in the capital city of Colombo is a good place to start. Its waves of fragrant spices clashing against the hot waves of the Indian Ocean make it an ideal place to begin exploring the country that was previously known as ‘Ceylon’. Colombo is currently the trading capital and the most developed part of Sri Lanka – with malls, restaurants, cinemas, markets and much more! Visit the heart of the country and truly understand what Sri Lanka is about.

There is a certain charm about Colombo with its mix of old and new architecture, pushing to the edge of the Indian Ocean. Once you’ve crossed the shore, notice trains full of commuters going up and down the coastline while the waves crash below the rail tracks. Grab a trishaw to the Fort area where colonial infrastructure is prominent – and a popular attraction. Pettah is Colombo’s “bazaar” – a market that is bustling throughout the day and into the late night – where literally everything can be bought, sold or repaired.

Cinnamon Gardens is a more stylish and sophisticated area as compared to Pettah. As the name suggests, it was once an orchard of cinnamon, but today, it is more buildings than cinnamon plants. The National Museum is a must visit for an insight into the country’s history and to understand what Sri Lanka is all about. Galle Face Green is a long, beautiful stretch of green grass parallel to the ocean shore. Every evening it gets crowded with locals looking to catch some fresh air and spend some leisure time with their kids. You will see games of cricket, kites being flown, and children playing catch, as the sun sets low into the Indian Ocean. Stalls of Sri Lankan Street food are lined up along the shore to give locals and foreigners an authentic experience of Sri Lankan food.

The road network in Sri Lanka is quite easy, and although compared to India and Nepal they are relatively quiet, the road rules can get hectic to guests travelling from well developed countries.

Trains are a good way of getting around to popular cities like Colombo, Kandy and Galle – but do expect trains to be crowded up to the doors!

Tuk tuks are available at every nook and corner but be sure to pre determine the price or make sure the meters are working fine before you get into one!

Discovering Rich Heritage

With multiple cities being appointed as the capital of Sri Lanka, a strong history has been developed, and many well-preserved ruins are World Heritage Sites.

  • Dambulla: while being the epicenter to temples such as the Dambulla Cave Temples (incredible structures dating back to the first century BC), it is also one of the busiest trade centers for fruits and vegetables – crucial to the local economy.
  • Habarana is a small town, yet a good place to base yourself if you are planning on exploring Sigiriya Lion’s Rock (a fortress built on the top of a rock, with two giant lion’s feet at its base), Dambulla Cave Temples, as well as National Parks in Kaudulla and Minneriya.
  • Between Kurunegala and Anuradhapura is the beautiful granite structure that was once known as the Yapahuwa Rock Fortress in the 13 th
  • The ancient towns of Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura are marked as UNESCO World Heritage Sites as they display several well-preserved ancient ruins scattered in parts of the towns. The Quadrangles, Abhayagiri Dagoba, Stupas, Sri Maha Bodhi and Buddha Statues are some of the highlights that should not be missed.

Exploring Exotic Beaches

  • If you are considering the south coast, the beaches of Bentota, Hikkaduwa, Galle, Unawatuna, Weligama, Mirissa, Hiriketiya and Tangalle are amongst the best.
  • Along the west coast, the best that Sri Lanka has got is Kalpitiya (known for kitesurfing and dolphin watching), and the golden sands of Negombo.
  • The East coasts boasts some of the best beaches in Asia – swim safe clear waters of Trincomalee and Passikuda, as well as the surfer’s paradise of Arugam Bay are a must visit!
  • The North coast of Jaffna, Mannar Island and Delft Island have also got postcard perfect beaches and are the best coast to visit if you want an off-the-beaten path experience.

Indulge in Scenic Views of the Hills

Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Kandy, Hatton, Badulla, Haputale, Bandarawela, and Koslanda are some of the most scenic hill country destinations – offering panoramic views of lush tea plantations, cascading waterfalls, mountains, valleys, and much more! While Kandy and Hatton are closer to Colombo and are a good option if you have got restricted time in your hands, Nuwara Eliya, Ella and Haputale offer more pleasant weather conditions as well as unending views that take your breath away! In these parts of the country, one can engage in activities such as trekking, mountain climbing, nature trails, white water rafting, scenic train rides and more.

Wildlife Encounters in Sri Lanka

From over 26 National Parks in Sri Lanka, popular ones such as Yala, Wilpattu, Minneriya and Udawalawe offer camping experiences for guests to get a real feel of what it is like to be in the wild. In addition to that, each of these parks offer jeep safari services that take you into the jungles in search of animals such as elephants, water buffalo, spotted dear, sloth bear, jackals, crocodiles, and much more! These safari’s last for about 3 hours and are best done during the early morning hours or late afternoon / early evening hours. Don’t forget to carry some water, binoculars and of course, a camera.

With tourism being one of the most significant and continuously booming industries in Sri Lanka for several decades, accommodation options are plenty. Budgeted hotels and guesthouses, and 4 and 5 star hotels are available in all corners of the country. For those looking for additional luxury, boutique hotels are a preferred option. If you are touring the country with a group of 10-15 family and friends, private boutique bungalows are also available in popular tourist destinations. Then there are also exclusive properties such as Anantara Tangalle, Wild Coast Tented Loge in Yala, and Ceylon Tea Trails that offer unmatchable, all-inclusive holiday experiences. A lot of wellness resorts that focus on sustainable living, environmentally friendly surroundings and encouraging guests to blend with nature are also up and coming in several parts of Sri Lanka. These resorts also offer Yoga sessions as well as Ayurvedic therapy to relax and rejuvenate mind, body and soul.

Things to keep in mind

  • While the people of Sri Lanka are very warm, welcoming and friendly and may offer to accommodate you in their homes, if you do encounter any trouble, do get in touch with relevant consulates and embassies located in Colombo.
  • Do not trust anyone with your belongings such as your passport, camera gear and money.
  • Be sure to pack breathable shirts, shorts/skirts that cover the knees, swim wear, hat, hiking shoes, flip flops, sunscreen, necessary toiletries, and a mosquito repellent.
  • When entering a temple, you will be asked to remove your shoes and hat, cover your shoulders and knees.
  • Make sure you have travel insurance before you leave your home country and you are aware of how to contact your insurance service provider in case of an emergency.

Every place we visited has different memories, all of them good. Too many to mention. I used Look Lanka Tours for a trip to Sri Lanka. I found the company very easy to deal with and it took the strain off planning the holiday as it was all done for us, hotels, flight transfer, driver the lot. The driver Jayaweera was an excellent tour guide, he was knowledgeable, prompt, excellent driver and adapted the tour to our needs. Every day the car was cleaned and he greeted us with a huge smile. He felt like part of the family. He was helpful with haggling too. I cannot thank him enough. The only thing I would say is the gems factory in Kandy is very expensive and the masks in the wood shop we were taken to were actually cheaper in the airport. I would like to thank you for an amazing holiday and for arranging it all. I will be using your services again.

A wonderful trip around Sri Lanka with the loveliest driver, Tiron. The tour we booked was 'Leisure in Paradise' - a two week 'Tour' of Sri Lanka. Tiron drove my husband and I around and was very friendly, patient, a safe driver, and we are happy to now call him our friend at the end of the trip. He learned what it was we enjoyed and wanted to do, and helped us make changes to the itinerary along the way so that we got the most enjoyment from our trip.

Bring along a camera with a long lens. You are going to see a lot of birds and up really close. From monitor lizard to a Kingfisher, you will see them all on this fantastic river safari that lasts about an hour. We took the boat from a place that's about 20 minutes from the Taj hotel in Bentota. Lovely experience.

Sri Lanka Travel Guide 2023

When to go, how to get around & how much to budget.

Exploring Sri Lanka is a thrilling and fascinating adventure, filled with excitement, fun, and enjoyment – but the process of planning a trip there can be quite the opposite! So I’m here to make your life a little bit easier with my Sri Lanka Travel Guide. Here’s the only travel guide you’ll need to plan your trip to Sri Lanka!

When I was organising our trip to Sri Lanka, it struck me how hard it was to find out all the information I needed. Bus and train timetables were impossible to track down, and I couldn’t find reliable accommodation recommendations or figure out what I needed to budget. Immediately after we left the country, I vowed to write a travel guide for Sri Lanka containing everything I learned while planning the trip and making our way around the country.

So here it is – the ultimate travel guide to Sri Lanka! Everything you need to know when planning your trip around Sri Lanka. Travel, eat and drink with the locals, and completely immerse yourself in Sri Lankan culture.

While you’re here, don’t forget to read my 10-day itinerary and budget.

Planning Your Itinerary

Preparing for your trip,  the best time to visit sri lanka.

Sri Lanka Travel Guide

The top of Ella Rock

There are two monsoon seasons in Sri Lanka that affect different parts of the country. On the southwest coast, the monsoon season runs from May to September . On the east coast and north, it runs between October and February .

For the rest of the year, the weather is dry and sunny throughout the country, with temperatures reaching up to 30 degrees in coastal regions and 18 in the highlands.

We visited in September when the popular beach areas in the south and southwest were still being hit with monsoons. We stuck mainly to the highland areas where the weather was better and had sunshine for the whole trip. If you are a budget traveller, hitting places during off-peak or shoulder seasons is a fantastic way to reduce costs. Especially in Sri Lanka, you can find discounts on accommodation and Western restaurants for up to 50% off their regular price.

Packing For Your Trip

Check out my backpacker’s packing guide to see my favourite things to carry with me. I recommend packing cubes, a waterproof phone case, the bite pen, a travel towel and a sleeping bag liner from this list. Along with camera equipment, as there are great photo-taking opportunities here.  Along with these, you should also pack the following on your trip to Sri Lanka:

  • Modest Clothing: You’ll need to dress more conservatively in Sri Lanka than other backpacker destinations in SEA. Bring clothes that cover your shoulders and knees for days when you are sightseeing or travelling from place to place.  My go-to outfit when we were travelling here was a light dress past my knees with a light shirt on top. It’s likely to be quite humid, so breathable fabrics are best.
  • Sturdy Shoes: Sri Lanka has great hikes and climbs, so bring trainers. Any regular workout trainers will be fine – but they will get covered in dust or mud. So opt for dark colours.
  • Bug Spray & SPF: It gets hot and sticky in Sri Lanka, and there can be quite a few mosquitos. Bring some high-strength DEET with you if you are prone to getting bit.

Organising Your Visa

Sri Lanka offers visitors from most countries a Visa On Arrival (VOA), giving you 30 days in the country. If you want to stay longer, you must extend your visa in Colombo.

How to apply : You can either wait until you enter the country to get a VOA or else  apply online  and skip the queues.

Fees : 50 USD if you apply online at the above link, or 60 USD if you get your VOA at the airport or port.

Limitations : You need to provide proof of onward travel to enter Sri Lanka – you will be asked to provide this at check-in or when boarding your flight.

Read my guide to Visa requirements across all South East Asian Countries.

Managing your money.

The Sri Lankan currency is the Rupee (LKR), but you can pay for some things in USD, like entry fees to attractions. You can find money changers in Colombo and popular tourist areas. Like anywhere else in SE Asia, the usual scams can be found here, so be very careful when changing money.

ATMs are pretty accessible, although they won’t be everywhere, so it’s always good to have enough cash with you. We mainly carried Rupee and had around $100 each in cash for entry fees.

We’ve encountered so many scams on our travels that we never use money changers. Instead, use our Transferwise  cards, which give us great rates worldwide.

Tip: Always look for the MRP (maximum retail price) when shopping . There will be a small black bar code somewhere on the item you want, and it will give you the maximum price of the item. You will be charged more for everything if you don’t know the price!

Responsible Travel in Sri Lanka

There are a few things to be careful of when travelling in Sri Lanka; the exploitation of children, animals, and wealthy tourists is rife there. As with many other countries in Asia, there are many animal parks and elephant parks that bill themselves as orphanages and are ethical when they are not. Pinnewala is the primary example of this, and I would avoid this park at all costs.

Minneriya National Park is not as bad as Pinnewala. Still, the number of people here often outnumbers the animals, and drivers tend to beep their horns and drive at the animals to get them closer to tourists. There have been many complaints from people who have been to this park, who were shaken and upset by how the animals were treated. Yala National Park seems to be ok if you would like to go to an animal park. Here is a guide to travelling responsibly in Sri Lanka

Getting Around in Sri Lanka

Arriving at colombo airport.

Sri Lanka Travel Guide

Waiting for the train in Sri Lanka

To get from the Airport to your guesthouse, use the app Pick Me, Sri Lanka’s version of Uber. There will be taxis and buses available outside of arrivals, but these will cost quite a bit more, and you also have the stress of having to haggle for your fare. Download Pick Me before your flight, and you can get a fairly-priced taxi once you land. I like to use the ATM when I arrive and get my SIM card sorted ASAP!

We flew into Colombo Bandaranayake International Airport on the west coast of Sri Lanka. This is the most popular entry point for tourists as it’s easy to get to the beaches and the highlands from here.

There is storage at Colombo airport where you can leave your bag for 6-8 USD per day. You can store them at the ‘Left Luggage Counter’ on the departure outer porch. It’s open 24 hours. We do this a lot if we’re in a country for less than two weeks – it’s cheap and makes travelling around much easier. If you’re travelling by local bus and train, you’ll want to have as little stuff as possible, so I definitely recommend leaving things here if you can.

Getting Around

There are many ways to travel around Sri Lanka, depending on how much time and money you have.

Many travellers we met hired a driver for their whole stay. This is the most expensive option, but it allows you to travel at your leisure. While it is undoubtedly more comfortable and convenient, public transport journeys were some of our trip’s best and most memorable parts.  I would have hated to miss them! Your driver can also double as a travel guide while in Sri Lanka, as some companies offer this service. You can hire a driver through a tour company online or through your accommodation once you arrive in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka Travel Guide

The train ride back to Colombo

Travelling by train around Sri Lanka was the highlight of our trip. Although it takes longer than hiring a driver, I still would choose to take the train. Our favourite train ride was the famous journey between Kandy and Ella, which you can read about here.

There are three classes of train travel, and we mostly opted for third-class seats as they were the cheapest fare. One thing to be aware of is that there are two types of third-class tickets – unreserved and reserved. Unreserved 3rd class tickets can be bought at a train station on the day and are usually the last tickets available. These do not guarantee you a seat, and the carriages are generally packed full of people – there was even a band on the train we were on. Third-class reserved tickets guarantee an assigned seat in a carriage where no one can stand. When you’re on a train for 6 + hours, this will make a big difference!

I would highly recommend you book your tickets before you go so you don’t end up with third-class unreserved seats. We booked ours through 12Go.Asia .

To learn more about timetables, prices, and how to book trains in Sri Lanka, visit ‘ The Man In Seat 61 ‘—the best site for information about train travel. Mark Smith, who started the website as a hobby, writes incredibly detailed and informative reviews of train journeys worldwide. We use it whenever we need to travel by train, a nd it was really helpful for our trips to Sri Lanka (and great for India, too!).

Hop on a local bus.

sri lanka tour 2023

Catching a bus in Sri Lanka is a very interesting experience! Bus stops are often not marked with a sign so you have to ask around to find out where to stand. Many buses will pass you before the right one eventually comes along. If you ask when the next bus is due, you often get met with a blank stare and told to wait, and it will turn up. The experience is a lot of fun, though, and it will save you so much money. Tip:  The buses don’t always come to a complete halt, so it’s best to be ready near the door when you’re about to get off!

For shorter journeys, take a taxi.

The Pick Me app is the Sri Lankan version of Uber and is excellent for getting around cities and towns cheaply. This app takes away the hassle of haggling with cab drivers. It gives you a set price for each fare, which you can pay by card in the app, or cash at the end of your trip.

Rent your own TukTuk

sri lanka tour 2023

Driving in Sri Lanka can be tricky, and you will need a local permit to drive here. Renting from TukTuk Rental is the best and easiest way to do this, as they will sort all your permits required for Sri Lanka. You can hire from Colombo, or you can get your Tuk Tuk delivered to you for an added fee. Use my code ‘STEPHMYLIFETRAVEL’ for a discount on your rental!

You will also need insurance .  As always, never travel to any country without insurance . You never know when you may need it, and it is my non-negotiable when travelling.

Budgeting For Your Trip

Sri Lanka can be an incredibly cheap country to travel around. Lunch can be found for a dollar, a double room for under $10, while a local bus is only $0.50. However, some entry fees can kill your budget, costing up to $30 per person. For this reason, I wouldn’t just visit anything for the sake of it.

Click here to read about where we went and what we spent during our 10 days in Sri Lanka.

Daily budget for sri lanka  ($usd).

Accommodation : $10-15 per night for a basic double room en suite with breakfast. $40 for a nice hotel, $60+ for luxury.

Food : $10 per day per person for lunch, dinner and water. You can eat for $5-7 in cheaper areas for local food. You will pay approx  $20 per person per day if you eat Western food.

Alcohol: A bottle of Lion beer costs $2, and wine or cocktails will set you back $4/5 per glass. Prices vary, but the way to find the cheapest alcohol is to drink where the locals drink or buy drinks from an off licence.

Transport : Travel by local bus or train for less than a dollar. We averaged around $4 per day for transport. To hire a driver for the day will set you back around $45 per day. Local tuk-tuks are around 50c to $1 per short trip.

Entry fees : You will find a complete list of entry fees to the different attractions  here . Pick and choose whichever you can fit into your budget.

I hope you’ve enjoyed reading my ultimate travel guide to Sri Lanka! If you have any questions, let me know in the comments below. Don’t forget to check out my 10-day itinerary for Sri Lanka  for more information on destinations and things to do!

Now that my Sri Lanka Travel Guide has prepared you for your trip, it’s time to plan your itinerary. Your route through Sri Lanka will be based on the weather, the type of activities you enjoy, and your budget.  Head to my Sri Lanka Itinerary post to plan your perfect trip!

Travel Better, Cheaper, Longer

The Ultimate Guide to Sri Lanka: Costs, Itineraries, and Favorites

train station in sri lanka on a dark and moody day

My visit to Sri Lanka — a jewel–shaped country in the Indian Ocean — was an unexpected surprise. I didn’t have a lot of expectations for the trip. But it turned out to be an amazing experience. I loved every bit of Sri Lanka: the verdant landscape, the delicious food; the crumbling, overgrown ruins; the abundant wildlife; and (especially) the welcoming locals who took hospitality to the next level .

Traveling Sri Lanka is a relatively easy thing to do. It can be a little chaotic, with overcrowded buses moving along clogged roads where lanes are mere suggestions, and trains packed to the gills with people hanging off the edges (which actually is kind of fun). But English is widely spoken so once you get used to the chaos, it isn’t too difficult to get around.

But there are a few things you should know before you visit Sri Lanka to avoid getting scammed, overspending, and, like me, missing some of the scenic trains!

Here’s my guide to visiting Sri Lanka:

Table of Contents

Sri Lanka Travel Guide: 14 Things to Know for Your Visit

Visiting sri lanka: how much does it cost, what to see and do in sri lanka: itineraries by region, where to stay in sri lanka.

Thatched boathouse surrounded by palm trees in Sri Lanka

Travel Tip #1: Get your visa ahead of time – You’ll need to get a visa for entry into the country. You can do this either online starting three days before you arrive, or upon arrival. It’s slightly cheaper if you do it ahead of time, plus you’ll skip the lines at the border!

Travel Tip #2: Don’t drink the water – You shouldn’t really drink the water in Sri Lanka, but as it’s really hot, you’ll want to keep hydrated. Bringing a reusable water bottle with a purifier will help you save money and avoid single use plastic in the process. ( My preferred brand is Lifestraw ).

Travel Tip #3: Eat the local food – Outside of the major cities of Colombo and Kandy, you won’t find many non-Sri Lankan or non-Indian food options. What you do find is a poor excuse for Western food that is overpriced and often a chain. Stick to the local food! It’s super delicious anyway.

Food, besides being crazy good, is also really cheap in Sri Lanka! Local food costs about 320-950 LKR for a meal of simple dishes like dosas (a kind of pancake), kottu (a dish made of roti (flatbread), vegetables, egg and/or meat, and spices), rice, chicken, and everything in between. At restaurants with table service, you’ll pay closer to 1,500-2,000 LKR.

Travel Tip #4: Don’t expect a party – There aren’t too many chances to drink alcohol in Sri Lanka. Outside the coastal tourist towns and the capital of Colombo, there isn’t much nightlife or opportunities to drink. While you can always crack a beer at your guesthouse, Sri Lanka isn’t home to a big drinking/nightlife culture. Expect your nights to be tame.

Travel Tip #5: Hire the Tuk-tuks – You can hire drivers cheaply. Any tuk-tuk driver will let you hire them for the day. Expect to pay around 10,000 LKR for the day. Moreover, tuk-tuk drivers are pretty honest, except in Colombo, where they will try to scam and overcharge you. Elsewhere in the country, you’ll get a fair deal. There’s no need to try to bargain hard.

Travel Tip #6: Take the airport bus – You’ll most likely be flying in and/or out of Colombo. The blue Colombo Express Bus is the cheapest and easiest way to get from the airport to the city center. It’s just 110 LKR (the same price as the regular bus), leaves every 30 minutes (5:30am-8:30pm), and takes about an hour. In the city, buses stop at (and leave from) Central Bus Stand, Pettah Fort, and Colombo Fort Station. Alternatively, a taxi is about 2,700 rupees.

Travel Tip #7: Travel by train – Train travel, while often slower, is the cheapest (and best) way to get around. The landscapes are beautiful, and there’s something relaxing about sitting at the window watching the country pass you by. Traveling by train lets you connect with local culture in a way that flying between destinations just won’t do (plus, Sri Lanka is so small that taking an expensive short flight doesn’t make sense). Just adjust your expectations on timeliness and speed. Don’t be in a hurry when riding the rails in Sri Lanka!

Some typical train routes and their approximate prices include:

  • Colombo to Jaffna (7-8 hours): 2,250 LKR
  • Jaffna to Anuradhapura (2.5-3.5 hours): 1,600 LKR
  • Kandy to Nuwara Eliya (3.5-4 hours): 2,500 LKR
  • Colombo to Galle (2 hours): 1,600 LKR

Travel Tip #8: Book your train in advance – If you are taking the scenic train from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya or Ella (or vice versa) and want a seat, book it in advance online. These tickets regularly sell out, especially in the high season. You can book starting 30 days in advance through the Sri Lankan railway’s website . Just remember to collect your physical tickets from the ticket office before departure.

Alternatively, you can always get a cramped unreserved second- or third-class ticket (where you’ll learn the new meaning of a tight squeeze) on the day of departure. The concept of “sold out” doesn’t apply to “cattle class.”

For more details on train travel in Sri Lanka, I recommend The Man in Seat 61’s guide .

Travel Tip #9: Show up early at Sigiriya – If you are visiting Sigiriya (an ancient rock fortress and UNESCO World Heritage Site that’s probably the most famous landmark in the country), get there when it opens at 6:30am to avoid huge lines and crowds at the site. If you are there after 10am, the crowds are so overwhelming it’s not worth visiting. It takes an hour to walk up as it’s single-file all the way!

Travel Tip #10: Plan around the monsoons – Sri Lanka is affected by two different monsoons, so if you want the best weather during your trip, you’ll want to keep monsoon season in mind. If you want to visit the beaches in the south and west, go in December-March, while April-September is best for visiting the north and east.

Travel Tip #11: Bring temple-appropriate clothing – Dress respectfully when visiting Sri Lanka’s sacred sites. That means wearing clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. You’ll also have to take your socks and shoes off before visiting temples (even if they are outdoors), so bring flip-flops to keep your socks clean!

Travel Tip #12: Day trip to Galle – Galle is only worth a day trip. Don’t stay over in the town. There is not much to do there at all. There was so little to do there I just went back to Colombo instead of staying the night. The same goes for many other towns, especially gateway towns to the national parks (more on that below).

Travel Tip #13: Don’t rush your trip – Looking at the map of Sri Lanka, you might say, “Oh, it’s not that big. I bet I can cover a lot of ground in a short period of time.” You could, but you won’t “see” much. It will be too much of a blur. There is a lot to see and do in Sri Lanka and it takes a while to travel around. (For more on suggested itineraries, see below!)

Travel Tip #14: Learn a bit of history beforehand – I admittedly didn’t know much about Sri Lanka before visiting . But as I’ve said in the past, you can’t know a place if you don’t know its history. I bought a guidebook and a few books about Sri Lanka’s history, and I’m really glad I did as it deepened my understanding of the country before I even arrived.

Sunrise over an expansive lush landscape with Sigiriya rock, a large rock formation, rising above the trees in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a cheap country to visit. Even when you splurge, it’s not that expensive. Overall, I would say you wouldn’t need more than a budget of 10,000-13,000 LKR per day. The country is very cheap, especially if you stick to delicious local or Indian cuisine (the food is so cheap there’s no reason to grocery shop and cook your own meals), avoid the overpriced Western style restaurants (local food tastes much better anyways), travel second- or third-class on trains and on buses, and don’t go crazy with the accommodation.

Even though I was on a budget, I didn’t go as low as I could have (such as staying in dorms every night, eating only Sri Lankan food, doing minimal activities, etc.) and still found it was hard to break the bank. The expensive days in which I took a tour or decided to try some fancy restaurant were balanced out on the other days I didn’t.

Here is a list of prices to help you get an idea of costs in Sri Lanka:

Typical Museum and Attraction Costs:

  • National Museum in Colombo – 1,500 LKR
  • Half-day tour at Yala National Park – 14,500 LKR
  • Temple of the Tooth in Kandy – 2,500 LKR
  • Sigiriya Rock – 9,700 LKR

Typical Food Costs:

  • Bottle of water – 100 LKR
  • Typical curry dish – 420-550 LKR
  • Western dinner – 1,500-2,500+ LKR
  • Domestic beer – 500 LKR

Typical Transportation Costs:

  • Airport taxi – 2,700 LKR
  • Train from Jaffna to Anuradhapura – 1,600 LKR
  • Short tuk-tuk ride – 100 LKR

Where should you go in Sri Lanka? Everywhere – if you have the time! Most travelers focus on the southern half of the country, with its hiking and beach towns. After decades of war, the north has a legacy of destruction that has yet to go away.

Sri Lanka may look like a small island, there is a lot to see and do there! More than I imagined. Anuradhapura and Sigiriya both have amazing ancient ruins. Kandy is filled with hiking treks, a big Buddhist temple, and a butterfly garden. Nuwara Eliya is known for its hiking, Tissa is the gateway to Yala National Park (which has elephants and leopards), and Galle is a beautiful old Dutch fort town.

Though I originally had planned to explore only the south due to my limited time there, I was offered the opportunity to talk to a member of Parliament in Jaffna up north and learn about the Tamil war, so I rearranged my route to spend more time in the north.

I was glad I did. Seeing the north gave me an added perspective on a portion of the country without hordes of other tourists. In fact, in my time up north, I saw only four Westerners.

So…where should YOU go with so many places to explore?

The waterfront in Galle, Sri Lanka, with its lighthouse and white colonial buildings

I would break your Sri Lanka travels into two parts — the north/center and the south — and focus on one of those regions. There’s simply too much to do in the country and travel (buses and trains) around the country is too slow to try to cover so much ground in a limited time.

Unless you have more time, then the world is your oyster!

Southern Route (two weeks) : Colombo – Hikkaduwa – Galle – Mirissa – Tangalle – Tissa – Ella – Nuwara Eliya – Kandy – Colombo

Northern Route (two weeks) : Colombo – Nuwara Eliya – Ella – Kandy – Sigiriya – Anuradhapura – Trincomalee – Jaffna – Colombo

North and South (four weeks) : Colombo – Jaffna – Trincomalee – Anuradhapura – Sigiriya – Kandy – Nuwara Eliya – Ella – Tissa – Tangalle – Mirissa – Galle – Hikkaduwa – Colombo

If you have a month, you could do this entire route plus add in the coastal towns of Arugam Bay and Negombo. With two weeks, focus on either the southern coast or the central/northern areas.

One thing to know is that once you’ve done the major things in a city, there’s very little reason to stay. For example, Tissa is the gateway to Yala National Park. Tour operators run most tours in the early morning (a higher chance of seeing animals) so if you took one of those tours ( like this one offered by local tour operator Shehan Safari ), you could be on a bus moving on to your next destination by lunchtime. There’s really not much else in the town.

The same could be said with Jaffna. Tick a few boxes and then move on. Galle is more a day trip from a nearby beach town than a place to spend a few days. Sigiriya and Dambulla can be done in two nights (though I added an extra night because I liked the family I was staying with).

I’d recommend spending more time in Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Kandy, Arugam Bay, Trincomalee, as those places have more activities and are worth staying longer in.

Like everything else, accommodation in Sri Lanka is super affordable. There are a lot of cheap accommodation options throughout the country. Hostels are really basic (fan, mosquito net, electric shower) but at 2,250-3,200 LKR per dorm bed, you can’t go wrong.

Guesthouses are more plentiful and affordable, with private rooms that have an en-suite bathroom starting at 7,000 LKR USD per night. You’ll usually get breakfast with your room too.

Here are some recommendations for places to stay around the country:

  • C 1 Colombo Fort (Colombo)
  • Palitha Home Stay (Sigiriya)
  • Jaye’s Home Stay (Kandy)
  • Backpacker Galle Hostel (Galle)

Sri Lanka is an easy country to visit, and with a few tips, you can travel there with ease. This is a very budget-friendly country, even if you go nuts on the attractions and tours. I didn’t spend a lot of money, averaging just 11,500 LKR per day. (Any expensive days will be balanced out with the cheap days where you just walk around, hike, or sit on the beach!)

Sri Lanka may be small but it packs a powerful punch. Take your time to see this land of jungles, waterfalls, monkeys, delicious food, and lovely people!

Book Your Trip to Sri Lanka: Logistical Tips and Tricks

Book Your Flight Use Skyscanner to find a cheap flight. It’s my favorite search engine as it searches websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is left unturned.

Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld as they have the biggest inventory and best deals. If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com as they consistently return the cheapest rates for guesthouses and cheap hotels.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:

  • Safety Wing (best for everyone)
  • Insure My Trip (for those over 70)
  • Medjet (for additional evacuation coverage)

Pack travel documents and any medication you take. We suggest packing comfortable outfits that are ideal for walking around and sightseeing.  You will also want to bring one or two nicer outfits for dinners out or at the hotel.  Pack comfortable walking shoes and a swimming suit.  For the beautiful beaches, remember to bring plenty of sunscreen and a pair of sunglasses.  For the mountains, a light jacket will be nice.

Quick Checklist For Women:

  • Loose tunics are common here and very comfortable
  • Cardigan or light jacket if heading to the higher country
  • Jeans (or any pants you are comfortable in longer than knee-length)
  • A long skirt that you can dress up for dinners or wear to be cool
  • Comfortable shoes
  • Swimming Suit
  • A light scarf (for sun protection)

Quick Checklist For Men:

  • Long pants or shorts, depending on weather
  • Polos or button ups for dressier occasions

The easiest way to get the local currency is to bring a bank card and withdraw cash as needed. You will be able to find Banks and ATMs in every major Sri Lankan city. Sri Lanka is mainly a cash society. Hotels, larger restaurants, and some more touristy businesses in main tourist cities will accept major credit cards, but most smaller stores do not. We recommend that you keep a ready supply of cash, including small change for taxi fare and miscellaneous tipping on hand during your stay in Sri Lanka. If you do pay by credit card, we recommend that you double check the receipt before signing, as working in an unfamiliar currency can allow you to be charged more than you expected, either intentionally or inadvertently.  A currency conversion app on your phone would be a helpful tool.

Please let us know if you have any allergies or dietary restrictions! We will do our best to serve you and will certainly communicate this to your driver and hotels. However, we also want you to be aware of a few things. We have no control over “traces” of nuts or any other allergens in containers, or bags, or kitchens. Sri Lanka does not have the same food standards as the United States and other countries. If you have a member of your tour who has a serious condition, you may want to bring food with you based on the seriousness of the allergies. We also have no control over what insects you may come into contact with. If you are in any questionable circumstances, you will want to be extra careful.

Our drivers are licensed to give tours of Sri Lanka. Your driver will guide you throughout Sri Lanka assisting in any way needed as he makes sure you enjoy the journey and arrive safely at your destination.  Your driver will be your “eyes” into the culture of Sri Lanka as he is very knowledgeable about the sights and history of Sri Lanka.  All of the drivers that we work with are fluent in English, so that they are able to communicate well with you. Drivers typically stay in lodging near your hotel and are available when needed.

Sri Lankan electrical sockets/outlets have all been standardized to the type G plug.  If your appliance’s plug doesn’t match the shape of these sockets, you will need a travel plug adapter in order to plug in.  Most hotels will have adapters, but we advise travelers to bring their international travel adapter.

Electrical sockets/outlets in Sri Lanka supply electricity at between 220 and 240 volts AC. If you’re plugging in an appliance that was built for 220-240 volt electrical input, or an appliance that is compatible with multiple voltages, then an adapter is all you need.

IMPORTANT : Travel plug adapters do not change the voltage, so the electricity coming through the adapter will still be the same 220-240 volts the socket is supplying. North American sockets supply electricity at between 110 and 120 volts, far lower than in most of the rest of the world. This being the case, North American appliances are generally built for 110-120 volts. That doesn’t mean that your specific appliance isn’t already compatible with the higher voltage or that you won’t be able to use your appliance in Sri Lanka…you will just need to make sure that your appliance will be able to facilitate 220-240 volts and that you have the appropriate adapter plug.

Sri Lanka Insurance records Rs. 10.6bn PBT in 2023

10 April 2024 12:15 am - 0     - {{hitsCtrl.values.hits}}

sri lanka tour 2023

This year, the company was able to increase its asset base to Rs. 313.3 billion and the Life fund to Rs. 180.8 billion. These achievements have come amidst numerous changes that took place within the organization and during challenging economic and social conditions that prevailed in the country, Sri Lanka Insurance said in a statement.  Securing its number one position for the 5th consecutive year, at the end of 2023 Sri Lanka Insurance Motor Plus remains the market leader recording a claim payout of 10 billion and a total volume of Rs. 13.5 billion premium value strengthening its market position with a market share of 21 percent. Sri Lanka Insurance Motor Plus achieved a growth of 6 percent, which is over 10 times faster than the industry growth average of 0.5 percent for the motor segment.

Affirming the prudent investment management strategies of the company and further emphasis on SLIC’s commitment towards its policyholders and their well-being, it outshined its own record to declare the largest Life Insurance bonus in the industry amounting to 10.4 billion for the year 2022 for its policyholders. In the last two decades SLIC has declared the highest Life Insurance bonuses year on year in the industry cumulating to a massive Rs. 92.8 billion making the SLIC bonus declaration unmatchable.

Commenting on the performance, Sri Lanka Insurance Group Chief Executive Officer Chandana L. Aluthgama noted that despite internal changes and the economic and social impact felt by the company, the strategic focus and steadfast commitment has positioned the position as one of the most profitable entities.  “The hard work and determination of our people have been instrumental in navigating these challenges, and with a reinforced foundation and a clear vision for the future, we are now prepared to embark on a new journey as Sri Lanka Insurance Life and Sri Lanka Insurance General,” he said.

Sri Lanka Insurance Chairman Ronald C. Perera noted that in the midst of ongoing divestiture talks, it’s vital to emphasise that Sri Lanka Insurance, comprising both Life and General businesses, holds immense value for potential investors.  “The outstanding performance of both entities positions them as pivotal players in the market, offering significant benefits to interested parties. Acquiring such a robust asset would not only bolster the buyer’s organization but also enhance its portfolio, fostering mutual growth and long-term prosperity,” said Perera.

Best time to visit sri lanka.

Sri Lanka is blessed with a tropical climate, with temperatures remaining in the high 20s throughout most of the year. To soak up some sunshine, be sure to come during the dry seasons (June - August and December – March). The rest of the time it's the monsoon season, so expect rain during this time.

Culture and customs

As an important stop on ancient trade routes, there’s a great mix of cultural influences present in modern-day Sri Lanka. The majority of Sri Lankans are Sinhalese Buddhists, followed by Tamils (who are mostly Hindu) and a small amount of Christians and Muslims. Various religious festivals and holy times are celebrated regularly in Sri Lanka, from large nationwide holidays to local village celebrations. As a fairly conservative nation, most locals dress modestly and displays of affection are not considered appropriate in public.

The British influence is still evident in Sri Lanka’s culture, cuisine and buildings. Drinking tea and playing cricket are the most obvious remnants of British colonial rule, although you’ll also find country cottages dotted throughout some rural regions with some serving traditional English fare like roast chicken and beef. Travellers will find that most Sri Lankans, despite having little, are quick to share their food and friendship. Known for being hospitable, generous and kind, when being offered tea or food in someone’s home, it is considered impolite to decline.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savouring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Things to try in Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan curries are among the hottest in the world, but don’t let that put you off. Fragrant, coconut-based curries packed with chilli, garlic, turmeric and coriander will give your tastebuds a treat.

Being an island, Sri Lanka has access to an amazing array of seafood. Feast on fresh crab, swordfish, lobster and squid - or choose a fiery seafood-based curry.

These egg-filled crepe-like wonders can usually be found at breakfast buffets. Usually made from rice flour and coconut milk batter, they are a Sri Lankan twist on the traditional pancake.

With miles of tea plantations, Sri Lankans have grown accustomed to drinking their popular home-grown cash crop. Tea is served with milk and sugar almost everywhere in Sri Lanka, mainly at breakfast and during the day.

Geography and environment

Situated in the Indian Ocean, the island of Sri Lanka lies just under the Indian subcontinent, to the southwest of the Bay of Bengal. Much of Sri Lanka receives a high level of rainfall during the monsoon season, with the dry northern areas being the exception. Due to the high level of rainfall, tropical evergreen forest proliferates around the country. Despite extensive land clearing for agriculture, there are still pockets of national parks and biosphere reserves around the country that hold much flora and fauna, including herds of wild elephants, deer and a wide range of birds. Sri Lanka’s remaining forests and protected areas are rich in biological diversity and remain popular with tourists looking for wildlife and adventure.

Sri Lanka’s main cities are typically built up, busy and increasingly becoming more multicultural and cosmopolitan. In comparison to Sri Lanka’s fast-paced, city-dwelling residents, many Sri Lankans still live in villages with simple housing and work predominantly in the agriculture and fishing industries.

History and government

Early history.

Sri Lanka was occupied by hunter-gatherers for thousands of years before the arrival of Sinhalese tribal groups in the 6th century BC. Buddhism arrived on the island sometime during the 3rd century BC and as a result, the city of Anuradhapura became the capital and centre of Buddhism. This Buddhist Kingdom endured years of Tamil raids until Anuradhapura was abandoned in favour of Polonnaruwa in the south. By the 12th century, Tamil rulers had a permanent presence in the north, where Hinduism still flourishes today.

The harbours of the south soon became important trading centres for Arab traders but by the 16th century a new wave of foreign influence began with the arrival of the Portuguese, then the Dutch. Sri Lanka’s wealth of cinnamon and geographic trading advantage appealed to the Portuguese, who slowly took over the island until the Dutch drove them out in the early 17th century. Remnants of this time can still be found in modern-day Sri Lanka, with colonial forts, cannons and other ruins dotted throughout the country, especially along the coast. By 1795, the British arrived and captured the island from the Dutch. Sugar, coffee, tea and rubber plantations were soon established by the British, along with Western schools, churches and colleges.

Recent history

Sri Lanka (Ceylon) was officially granted its independence in 1948 but continued to maintain relatively good relations with the British. By 1960, Ceylon had the world’s first female prime minister and in 1972, the name Ceylon was replaced with Sri Lanka, which had just become a republic (but remained a member of the Commonwealth). These changes in government and moves towards independence were largely Sinhalese-centric, which created some tension with parts of the Tamil population.

From 1983 to 2009 Sri Lanka endured an intermittent civil war, which resulted in some displacement of people and human rights violations. More recently, parts of Sri Lanka were devastated by the 2004 tsunami, yet Sri Lanka has rebounded with an increasingly stable economy based on agriculture, tourism and telecommunications. With one of the best-performing stock exchanges in the world, Sri Lanka has emerged from conflict, natural disasters and colonisation to become a rising tourist and economic hotspot.

Top 10 spiritual spots in Sri Lanka

1. bodhi tree.

Located at the ancient site of Anuradhapura, this sacred fig tree is said to have grown from a sapling of the Bodhi Tree that Buddha was sitting under when he became enlightened. This holy spot has long been a pilgrimage site for Sri Lankans and is now becoming a place of spiritual interest for visitors too.

2. Dewatagaha Mosque

One of the oldest mosques in Sri Lanka, this prayer place for worshippers of Islam has stood in Colombo for hundreds of years. The striking domes and minarets stand out in the Colombo skyline and provide a spiritual epicentre for Sri Lanka’s Muslims.

3. Temple of the Tooth

This Buddhist temple, located in Kandy, is named for the holy relic (said to be Buddha’s tooth) that is housed inside. It's a World Heritage site that has survived bombings and the ravages of time - visit here to see worshippers deep in prayer under the elaborate golden roof.

4. Dambulla Cave Temple

This well-preserved series of cave temples is brimming with paintings and statues that date all the way back to the 1st century. With colourful depictions of Buddha, Sri Lankan kings and various Hindu gods and goddesses, this is one of the most elaborate cave complexes in Asia.

5. Adam’s Peak

Sacred to Buddhists, Hindus, Christians and Muslims, Adam’s Peak is arguably Sri Lanka’s most popular pilgrimage spot. Surrounded by wildlife reserves, the walking trail leading to the mountain is a stunning walk regardless of religious persuasion. Watching a stirring sunrise from the holy summit is nothing short of magnificent.

6. Polonnaruwa Ruins

These impressive ruins of an ancient kingdom are home to massive palaces, huge statues, imposing temples and an artificial lake. Although historically and culturally important, witnessing orange-robed monks praying at Gal Vihara (a Buddhist rock temple) is a spiritual moment you won’t soon forget.

7. Sigiriya (Lion’s Rock)

This magnificent UNESCO World Heritage site was once a mountain monastery many centuries ago. The rock inscriptions, paintings and ancient ‘graffiti’ show insight into the lives of the monks who lived within the caves and grottoes before King Kasyapa took to the throne and established a capital there.

8. Anuradhapura

The ancient ruins of Anuradhapura are a significant holy place for Sri Lanka Buddhists. As one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, there are many monasteries surrounding this area of supreme veneration.

9. Munneswaram Temple

This elaborate Hindu temple complex is known for its vibrant festivals in celebration of Navaratri and Sivaratri. During this time, the complex is filled with the buzz of devotees who come to attend daily pujas and bathe in the nearby holy river.

10. Mihintale

If you choose to climb the thousand or so steps to the top of Mihintale’s hill, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views and a deeper understanding of Buddhism, as this is the site where Buddhism is said to have originated in Sri Lanka.

Known for its fragrant spices, vibrant fabrics, stunning silver jewellery and one-of-a-kind antiques, it’s difficult to leave Sri Lanka without a backpack full of mementos. From far-flung rural marketplaces to the boutiques and galleries of Galle and Colombo, shopping in Sri Lanka has something for everyone at a relatively low cost.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Sri Lanka

1. Handicrafts

Although available all over the country, Kandy is one of the best places to buy locally-made handicrafts. Choose from handmade brass and silver jewellery, vibrant fabric bags and scarves, and batik wall hangings.

Home to a multitude of plantations and spice gardens, it’s no wonder some of the world’s best spices come from Sri Lanka. Perhaps buy some saffron, cloves, cinnamon, turmeric and cardamom to take home a taste of Sri Lanka with you.

3. Gem stones

If you’re after a low-cost gemstone, Sri Lanka is a top place to pick up a stone at a great price. Birthstones are popular, as are girls' best friends – diamonds! As always, buy from a licensed gem store to guarantee authenticity.

Festivals and events

Vesak festival.

People all over Sri Lanka commemorate Buddha’s birthday by visiting temples, giving alms and singing devotional songs. Simple, luminous paper lanterns are hung outside homes and food is freely distributed to the public via roadside stalls.

Is Sri Lanka accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Travellers with disabilities will likely find it difficult to travel around Sri Lanka. Public transport has not been adapted for those with mobility, visual or auditory limitations, and pavements and roads are often in poor condition. Accommodation, too, is unlikely to be accessible for those in wheelchairs, except perhaps in top-end hotels.

If you do live with a visual, hearing or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What kind of transport will I use in Sri Lanka?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.

Hire a bike and pedal around ancient cities full of fascinating ruins for a fun and interactive way to learn about Sri Lanka’s deep history.

Experience some of the world's most beautiful train journeys in the hill country of Sri Lanka.

Tuk Tuks are the best and cheapest way to make your way around Sri Lanka's towns and cities.

Jump in a jeep for a wildlife safari in Sri Lanka's national parks.

What to wear in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is warm. Sri Lanka is very warm. Sri Lanka will have you sweating unless you’re up visiting the tea plantations in the hills, so light, breathable clothing is essential. Whatever you do, don’t wear any clothing depicting the Buddha – this can get you arrested, as can having a Buddha tattoo.

Does my trip to Sri Lanka support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveller. Trips to Sri Lanka directly support our foundation partner, Zero Plastic.

Zero Plastic aims to reduce plastic waste in Sri Lankan communities through education and volunteer programs. Donations from our trips help them raise awareness for the impact of plastic on the environment and local wildlife and reduce plastic pollution at the UNESCO-listed Sigiriya (and surrounding communities).

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?

Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.
